Biking injury in the USA

How we helped when this nomad got their ribs fractured in the USA

I was out mountain biking in the elements… when a tree got in my way. On impact, the handle bars of my bike twisted, bluntly jutting into my ribs before I went flying. I was in a lot of pain but there was no external bruising. I figured that even if I had broken a rib, there was nothing much anyone could do, so I didn’t seek medical attention. Two weeks later, though, I was still in just as much pain as when the accident had happened — and my internal organs felt painful, too. When I started having muscle spasms near my ribs I started to worry that something might be wrong, so I went to a nearby hospital. After initial concern that I had damaged my spleen, I was told I had multiple fractures in my ribs.

Dengue Fever in Bolivia

How we helped when this nomad got dengue fever in Bolivia

I was in the middle of a trip to Bolivia when I got this massive headache and my body felt like it was freezing even though it was hot outside. I began to shiver uncontrollably, and my chattering teeth almost caused me to bite my tongue off. I went to the local hospital where they easily identified that I had Dengue Fever and a temperature of 40-41 Celsius.

A brain aneurysm in Switzerland

How we helped when this nomad was urgently hospitalised

I'm young and never imagined I'd end up in hospital with a life-threatening condition. With no warning, while travelling in Switzerland, I had a brain aneurysm, which is an abnormal ballooning of an artery and, when it bursts, it can result in stroke.

It was a terrifying experience.

I was in hospital with specialist care and surgery for ten days followed by weeks recovery in Zurich before I could come home. World Nomads really looked after me and flew my parents over to be with me while I recovered.

Travel Insurance for Trip Cancellation

Learn what's covered if you have booked and paid for your trip and unexpectedly need to cancel.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

If your swimsuit is packed for your sunny vacation to California but suddenly you can’t go, travel insurance could help. You may be able to claim for your non-refundable costs of cancelling your trip (a 72-hour waiting period applies before coverage begins).

For Brazilian residents, all of World Nomads travel insurance plans include cancellation cover if you have an accident or get sick before you leave.

In addition, you may be covered for cancelling your trip if a close relative (your father, mother, spouse or child) is hurt or seriously ill (policy conditions apply).

What's covered?

If you’ve bought your travel insurance policy with World Nomads, you may be able to make a claim for your non-refundable cancellation costs. These include (but are not limited to):

  • You experience an illness or personal accident that medical experts determine will prevent you from traveling.
  • You, or your traveling companion or a close relative (spouse, parent or child) is hospitalized or dies.
  • A judicial summons.
  • If you are fired unfairly from your current job.
  • If your house catches fire, explodes or suffers serious damage.

Note that if you transfer your trip to another person as a result of one of the covered events, the transfer expenses may be covered by this coverage, provided they do not exceed the cancellation expenses.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance cancelation cover doesn’t include everything. This means you may not be covered if you cancel your trip due to:

  • Changing your mind!
  • Vaccination expenses.
  • Accidents resulting from anything illegal or intentionally aggrivating your risk.
  • Events that the insured is already aware of before purchasing the travel insurance policy

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are item limits and conditions that apply, so for more information read your policy carefully before you buy.

Be prepared if you need to claim for cancellation.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history
  • Written documentation from the travel provider of reason for cancellation and any refunds

Wife's accident cancels Kilimanjaro

I have to cancel my trip to Tanzania because my wife had an accident and she is waiting for a scan of her back. I should fly to Berlin tomorrow, then Bergen and day after to Africa. It is impossible now because she is alone in the house and I have to take her tomorrow to hospital for another scan. I paid 900 pounds for a Kilimanjaro Climb which is not refundable as it is too close to departure. I paid a deposit for a 3 day safari and had to cancel flights and my volunteer job.

Travel insurance when skiing or participating in winter sports

Why consider travel insurance when skiing or snowboarding?

Big dumps, fresh tracks and bluebird days will make for an epic trip, yet accidents on and off the hill do happen, even to the most experienced sliders. If you’re just learning on your first trip or you’re a ski bum chasing seasons, World Nomads travel insurance for residents of Brazil may be able to help you and your family when the unexpected hits your next winter adventure.

Do I need ski insurance?

Thousands of sports enthusiasts tackle the slopes every season, usually without any major incident. But adventure sports can be risky, especially when frosty temperatures and spine-rattling runs are part of the picture.

If your next vacation includes time on the slopes, you could find yourself needing help for anything from emergency medical care to an emergency evacuation or repatriation back home.

Here are a few case scenarios where travel insurance for skiing and snowboarding could be a real asset. Just remember these are example scenarios only. All claims require documentation and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

You could get into an accident

Whether you’re on- or off-piste, navigating steep (and even not so steep terrain) can be tricky. It only takes one bad fall or collision to end up with a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder, or a wrist fracture. Emergency medical bills can be just as painful as a crash. This is where travel insurance can soften the blow.

You might need to get to a hospital from far, far away

When you get hurt on a mountain, getting transportation to a hospital can be critical. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help plan your evacuation so that it’s timely and efficient. And thanks to travel insurance, it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

Your ski and snowboard equipment could get lost by your airline

If your skis or snowboard have been lost or damaged by your common carrier (your airline or other transportation provider), you could get reimbursed for the current value of your equipment (which factors in depreciation) or the cost of a replacement, up to a per item and total maximum limit. (Damage from the use of sports equipment is not covered.)

Bad weather can cause delays (and destruction)

Maybe an avalanche buried your lodge or a snowstorm delayed your connecting flight. Our plans cover inclement weather under certain circumstances. For example, if your flight is delayed en route to your destination for more than 12 hours, you could be reimbursed for food, taxis and accommodation you needed to purchase during the delay, up to the limits outlined in your plan.  Read your policy wording for full details.

You wouldn’t forget to pack your ski jacket and gloves – so why would you leave home without travel insurance?

What's covered for ski and snowboard travel insurance?

World Nomads travel insurance is designed to help you explore your boundaries. For residents of Brazil, we automatically provide coverage for more than 180 activities on and off the slopes.

As passionate ski bums, we’ve designed our plans to cover the style of riding our Brazilian Nomads love the most*:

  • Skiing and boarding within resorts
  • Cross country skiing on marked trails
  • Terrain parks
  • On-piste heli-skiing & heli-boarding )

Coverage is available for international trips or for domestic trips more than 50 kilometers from home.

*Standard, Explorer and Explorer Plus plans differ in their coverage of skiing or snowboarding activities. Conditions and exclusions apply. Read our Help Center article on adventure sports coverage to choose the right plan for your trip.

What's not covered for ski and snowboard travel insurance?

  • Stunt skiing, bobsledding and snowmobiling.
  • Off-piste heli-skiing and heli-boarding.
  • Sporting equipment damaged from use.
  • Participation in a race or competition as a professional athlete.
  • Delayed baggage on the way home from your trip.

This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. If you have any questions about what is and is not covered, please reach out – we’re happy to help.

Why should you consider travel insurance coverage for your next hiking and trekking adventure?

Hiking and trekking take you off the beaten path - and sometimes far from help if something goes wrong. Even on well-marked trails, things can go sideways quickly, from a sprained ankle to sudden illness or stolen baggage. Travel insurance designed for hiking may help protect your trip from unexpected medical emergencies, delays, and disruptions so you can explore confidently, knowing you have support if you need it.

Whether you’re traveling across the country or to a far-flung region of the world, your hiking adventure is an investment of time, money, and preparation. Insurance gives you the flexibility and backup you need if weather changes, connecting flights go off-schedule, or your bags fail to arrive at your destination. Having protection in place means you can focus on the trail ahead - not on what might go wrong.

Top tips for your trekking adventure

To make the most of your trek, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Be prepared

Check the weather before you go, inspect your gear, and make sure your footwear and equipment are suited to the terrain. If you’re joining a guided tour, confirm that your operator is accredited and experienced.

  1. Get hike-fit

Even moderate hikes require stamina, balance, and strength. If you’re tackling altitude, such as on the Inca Trail, make sure you’re prepared for the thinner air. Train appropriately in the weeks before your trip.

  1. Choose routes responsibly

Match the trek to everyone’s experience level. Wear appropriate clothing and safety gear, stay hydrated, and respect environmental guidelines.

  1. Keep your receipts and documentation

Any claim you submit will require proof, such as purchase receipts or reports of loss or theft. Keep digital or printed copies of your important documents throughout your trip.

When you’re ready to start planning, head to our website to get a quote and compare plans.

Other adventure activities covered

In addition to hiking and trekking, World Nomads covers more than 180 sports, activities, and experiences, from camping and rock climbing to many other outdoor pursuits. If your adventure goes beyond hiking, be sure to review our full list of covered activities to confirm what’s included in your plan.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • What is the difference between hiking, trekking, and mountaineering for travel insurance purposes?
For travel insurance coverage, “hiking” and “trekking” are often interchangeable and refer to walking routes of varying distances and difficulty. Mountaineering, however, typically involves technical climbing, specialized equipment, or high-altitude ascents. Because each activity carries different risks, our plans cover hiking and trekking under 3,000 meters but do not cover mountaineering or technical climbs requiring ropes or special gear.
  • Would hiking gear and equipment be covered?
Yes, many types of hiking gear may be covered if lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged by a carrier. Coverage limits vary by plan, and damage from normal use or wear and tear isn’t included. Review your plan documents carefully, especially if you’re carrying high-value items such as GPS devices or technical clothing.
  • Do I need insurance coverage for multi-day trekking trips?
Multi-day hikes often involve remote routes where help may be far away. Our plans may cover emergency medical treatment, evacuation, baggage protection, trip cancellation, and more, giving you flexibility and support throughout your adventure.

The treatment consisted of cleaning the wound, local anesthetic and ten stitches. A course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories/ pain-killers was prescribed. A follow of check 24 hours later (today) revealed no infection. I am able to provide photos of the injury and treatment.
