Why should I consider travel insurance?
Going off-grid can be the ultimate form of social distancing if you’re seeking solitude, avoiding large crowds, and wanting to unplug from digital devices. Both our Standard and Explorer plans may offer coverage (up to the benefit limits) if:
- You get injured and need medical transport or evacuation back to your home country.
- You need coverage for your bags and valuables in case they’ve been lost, stolen or damaged. Keep the paperwork and receipts for your gear.
- You’ve already left home and forgot to buy travel insurance.
- You need coverage for emergency medical expenses and hospitalization costs for sudden injury or illness.
- You’re looking for coverage for a range of adventure sports, activities, and experiences.
Don’t forget to read the policy wording as all plans are different and coverage will depend on your Country of Residence. Rental coverage when your road trip comes to a halt
Some World Nomads plans offer damage collision waiver coverage depending on your Country of Residence and your choice of insurance plan, a Standard or an Explorer. Make sure you read your policy and check the amount of coverage your plan provides.
Remember, if you leave your gear in your rental vehicle unattended or unsecured, and it gets stolen, our plans are unlikely to cover it.
If you get into a car accident, rental car travel insurance may help by covering damage to your vehicle and the cost of repairs, as well as charges imposed by the rental company, depending on your circumstances.
Make sure you report the damage to the local authorities and the rental car company as soon as possible. Also, it almost goes without saying, damage due to irresponsible behaviour will not be covered.
Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you purchase there may be coverage for vehicle rentals. However, coverage may not be available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.
Coverage for adventure seekers and sports lovers
Off-grid getaways are a great way to engage in some high-energy activities.
Maybe abseiling or a thrilling zip line is your thing? Before you pull the rip cord on that adventure, check that your insurance covers your activity. Depending on your Country of Residence, you may need to include an insurance upgrade when you buy to have coverage for some activities. If you don’t have the right level of coverage, you won’t be able to claim if something goes wrong.
Many policies cover white water rafting and kayaking, for example, but Class 6, Extreme and Exploratory Rapids aren’t covered. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. Your policy may have conditions and exclusions.
Coverage for unexpected medical emergencies
Our plans cover emergency medical expenses when you're sick or injured. If your injuries are more serious than minor bumps and scratches, you may need to get to a hospital. Our plans include emergency evacuation coverage for ambulances or transfers to an appropriate medical facility. Be sure to check the maximum benefit amount and terms of coverage in your policy.
Go REALLY off the grid, but check your destinations
OK, so there’s off-grid and then there’s really off the grid. Just be aware that the more remote your destination, the more chance there is that these may not be covered. Make sure to check if your off-the-grid destination(s) are covered by our policies.
Some destinations may not be covered due to violence, terrorism or possibly due to being designated a COVID hotspot. Additionally, there will also be certain activities, including volunteering activities, that we cannot cover as they are too dangerous.
Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.
What does my travel insurance cover?
Travel insurance tip 4: Depending on your Country of Residence, if you decide to travel to a country where there’s already been a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning or its equivalent put in place by your government, then your policy will be cancelled. Governments can issue or change travel warnings without notice, so always check with World Nomads before you pay anything towards your trip.

Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for level 1 sport and adventure activities that include camping and hiking up to 2,000 metres, and activities such as surfing, kayaking and bungy jumping.
For Kiwis looking for more adventurous pursuits you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re planning on camping or hiking up to 6,000 metres or if you’re abseiling or mountain biking. Specify all the activities you are planning on your trip when you get your quote as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your PDS for details or contact us.

Camping holidays can serve up some serious surprises. If that hike to catch the sunrise turns into a nasty misstep and you need a doctor urgently, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. They can help direct you to the nearest medical centre or arrange emergency transport to the most appropriate facility.
Traveller Tip: check you have any relevant paperwork as you’ll probably be asked for proof for several things such as entry permits for countries you’ll be visiting, special tourist visas, digital COVID certificates, proof of vaccinations and a negative PCR test, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.
For self-drive camping trips, the Explorer Plan has cover for the rental insurance excess if you’re involved in a car accident. If you’re taking your own sports equipment such as a kayak, the Explorer Plan also offers cover to hire replacement equipment if:
- It is accidentally damaged by a carrier; or
- It is delayed or lost by a carrier for more than 12 hours (the waiting period).
Please note sporting equipment that is checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight.

- Any pre-existing medical conditions which are not listed as an automatically covered pre-existing medical condition as per your PDS. Check your policy wording carefully.
- If you do not use a professional qualified and licensed guide and operator for activities where required.
- If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
- Unattended baggage or personal items.
- The policy excess per person per insured event where applicable (check the Summary of Benefits in your PDS).

Pickpocketing and other crimes
Crime can be a problem in Tanzania. Tourists can be the victims of theft, carjacking and mugging, especially in crowded cities. When you have a World Nomads policy, you may be covered for the loss of your belongings, up to their depreciated value, and to the per-article and total maximum benefit amount.
Always file a police report and hold on to a copy for World Nomads. Carrying colorful Tanzanian shillings? Depending on your Country of Residence, there’s limited or no coverage for cash, so leave what you won’t need for a day out in the safe at your hotel, if possible.
Natural disasters
Rain, rain, go away... during Tanzania’s waterlogged monsoon months (March through May and November thru December), flooded roads may be impassable, or you could be stuck in a cyclone. Translation? Ruined plans and you missing out on things you already paid for.
When surprises such as this happen, World Nomads can step in to support you: depending on your Country of Residence, your coverage could include anything from trip cancellation and trip interruption to an evacuation to a safe place. Your choice of a Standard or an Explorer Plan may also decide what benefits you get.
Just note that if a natural disaster has already been forecast or happened after you purchased your policy, it’s not reimbursable. (In other words, you can’t get an insurance policy for something you already know about)
Adventure activity coverage
If you’re planning a trip to Tanzania, you may want to consider a World Nomads plan. World Nomads covers more than 150 adventure sports and activities. Your World Nomads plan can come in handy if tracking elephants on a guided walking safari through the Selous Game Reserve or paddle boarding in a lagoon near Zanzibar After all, a twisted ankle or appendicitis can happen anywhere; and you may want emergency medical coverage for sudden accidents or sicknesses.

A flight delay
My flight was delayed due to mechanical issues, which caused me to miss my connecting flight to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. This delay meant that I missed the first night in my hotel and the pre-arranged transfer from the airport. I also needed to purchase a new transport from the airport to the Machame Gate at Kilimanjaro National Park.

- Explorer Plan – For those trips you’ll be talking about for years to come! Provides enhanced benefit limits, like up to $500 CAD for baggage delays.

What’s not covered by the travel insurance plan I buy for surfing internationally?
Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something careless or out of control (like tackle big-wave off-shore surfing when you’re only a beginner). For example, some things we may not cover include:
- Surfing under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Reckless behavior or failure to follow safety advice
- Search-and-rescue costs.
- Any damage related to the wear and tear of sports equipment.
- Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
- Travel within your home province.

What expats should keep in mind?
We've put together this expat tips checklist to help you plan before you set off on your next working holiday. Please note, benefit limits, terms and conditions apply depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected.
- Change is constant, embrace it. Despite detailed planning pre-departure, things can change. We know how important flexibility is when abroad, so you can buy a policy before you leave home or while traveling for as long, or as little, as you need. If you decide to stay longer in a place than you thought you would or decide to change direction on a whim, we are happy to extend your policy and help you choose the right level of cover for your needs.
- Vaccinations are not new. For years, there have been rules in place for travelers regarding immunizations against serious illnesses, and the COVID-19 pandemic is no different. When planning your expat experience, check with embassies, global health bodies (such as the World Health Organization, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, etc) and government authorities of the countries you're hoping to visit about their entry requirements. Some countries now require proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test result (usually taken 48-72 hours before arrival). Read our COVID-19 Travel Insurance article and keep your vaccine and test records with you – they’re as important as your passport these days.
- Not all country entry rules are the same. We know the rules for entry to our own country, but what is acceptable in one country might not be the case in another, so do your research pre-departure. Check the entry rules and regulations for the places you plan to visit. The last thing you want to do is arrive somewhere new to you, only to be turned around for not having the correct paperwork or because you decided to travel to a country that had a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning in place.
- It’s not too late to buy travel insurance once you’ve set off. If you’ve been so busy that insurance is an after-thought, it’s never too late. World Nomads offers insurance for travelers between 18 and 65 (up to 69 years for US residents). Our policies are available to most nationalities who are working or traveling outside of their Country of Residence. You can buy a policy online using a credit card, and this can be done even after you’ve left home, but there are some exceptions, so check your policy details before purchasing.
- If you plan on driving overseas, do your homework. Driving in another country can be a big deal and at times quite scary, especially when the road rules differ, so make sure you know the requirements. Check the licensing rules (you may need to apply for an international driving permit depending on which country you’re from). Our Explorer Plan policy may be able to help with rental car excess if you’re involved in an accident, but you need to be correctly licensed, adhere to local laws, and have taken out a rental policy with the car hire company.
- If you’re a digital nomad, ensure you’re travel ready. Most expat travelers today don’t leave home without their tech devices – we’re talking digital cameras, laptops, air pods, drones etc. Aside from helping to document your travels, they’re not cheap and should be properly protected. At World Nomads, our policies may cover a wide range of everyday gadgets, but how we do that and how much we insure them for depends on the plan you choose. Terms and conditions apply.
- Adventure travel is fun, but also risky. Expats are an adventurous bunch, so it’s not surprising that many exciting activities will rate high on the to-do list. Our plans include cover for more than 150 activities globally – everything from backpacking to kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping, but not all are covered under every plan, so read the full list here. You may need to pay an additional premium for higher-risk activities.
- Travel cover doesn’t replace international medical insurance. While we may offer cover for overseas emergency medical expenses, any treatment must be certified as medically necessary by an authorized medical practitioner or paramedic overseas and agreed by our Emergency Assistance Team. Your employer or host should take care of your medical cover. We also have some exclusions when it comes to pre-existing conditions. Our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 in case of emergencies.

The Coronavirus pandemic is the single biggest challenge travelers have faced in the last 50 years. While visa and travel rules frequently change, they rarely do so on the scale we’re seeing around the world.
Before you even think about packing your bags it’s more important than ever to start planning as you’ll need to add some extra check boxes to your normal To Do list before you go.

Why should I consider travel insurance?
Many countries now require travelers to have coronavirus-specific travel insurance. Whether you want to purchase travel insurance or not, the choice may be taken out of your hands if you want to travel to specific countries. Travel insurance requirements range from requiring basic medical cover for emergencies, to a full travel insurance policy that includes cover for specific Coronavirus-related events such as quarantine.
Do I need a vaccine passport or proof of vaccination?
Once you’re fully vaccinated (which may mean more than one dose depending on the vaccine and if you need a booster shot), and you’ve been given the all-clear from your medical practitioner to travel, you may need proof of vaccination with your airline, hotel, tour operator or at passport control. Research entry requirements for the countries you’re visiting as they may need a specific format of vaccine passport. Always travel with original or digital copies of your vaccination. You may also be asked to show evidence of being vaccinated by your airline, hotel, and when arriving at your intended destination.
How do travel restrictions work?
We’ve seen many countries open and then close their borders as Coronavirus cases fall and then increase. Once you’ve booked a trip, you’ll need to keep an eye on border restrictions and entry requirements at the country you’re traveling to, as well as for your own country of residence. Some governments are advising their citizens to not travel to certain countries. It may affect any claims you make under your travel insurance cover if you travel to a destination against your government’s advice.
Look out for any last-minute government travel updates, as well as notifications from airlines and other travel companies you’ve made bookings with.
What if there are last-minute changes to my booking due to Coronavirus?
Unless you’re staying with family or friends while traveling, you’ll be booking hotels, hostels, or campgrounds, as well as tours and activities in advance. Check with your accommodation provider and tour operator to find out if there are any last-minute cancellations or changes to Coronavirus requirements. Some hotels or hostels may require visitors to be vaccinated or to show a negative PCR test in some cases 48 or 72 hours before arrival.
Have I got the right vaccine?
It’s great that your vaccinated and have proof of it (like a vaccine passport) but you may still need a specific vaccine with some countries specifying which vaccines are eligible for entry, and yours may not be on the list. Check the entry requirements of any country you are planning to visit well ahead of your travel date to allow enough time to take any tests and confirm the vaccine you’ve taken is approved for entry. If it’s not on the list – it won’t matter if you've been vaccinated, you won’t be let in.
Am I covered if I need to pay for quarantine?
This really depends on your Country of Residence and the plan you purchase. Some of our policies offer cover for some Coronavirus-related events but these may vary between plans. While one policy might offer cover for the cost of your quarantine, another may not. Make sure you select your chosen plan carefully and that you know what you're covered for before making a purchase.

I love world Nomads. They have really comprehensive cover and good pricing. Last time we travelled we unfortunately had to claim when our 5 year olds temperature soared above 40C and she was briefly hospitalised. Claim was easy, professional and straightforward. Love this company and its coverage - Wish I could use it forever
While I have never had to make a claim with World Nomads, my husband and I have traveled to 5 continents and dozens of countries with the peace of mind that we were covered for any difficulties. Purchasing a policy is seamless and being able to extend a policy while we are traveling is so easy and helpful. All of our policies are listed in our online account, so we have easy access in case of making a claim or having to contact customer support. My only regret is that in a couple of years, we will no longer be eligible for coverage because of the age limit. But we’ve certainly enjoyed having access for nearly 20 years.

Great medical support team
I have had amazing service so far, the only thing that took some time was that initial phone call to notify about my accident, getting through an agent using the international number given in the policy. That took about 1 hr and a half so don’t hang up, after that everything was pretty smooth and they called me and followed up by email as well, everyone that I spoke to was very kind, professional and understanding of my situation, I feel very well looked after even when I’m far from home at the moment. Reliable Travel Insurance!!!!
I have purchased over 30 policies from World Nomads since 2015. I have claimed on 3 of them and all three claims were settled in full. The claim process is very thorough but efficient and once all the documents are submitted the claims were settled. I booked a trip to Singapore and Malaysia in January for me and my wife for March 27-April 11, 2024. We were to visit our son and his family in Johor Bahru for a week, then travel to Sibu Island for the remainder of our trip. Unfortunately, my wife broke her foot in late February so we decided to cancel our trip. We didn't think snorkeling on Sibu Island would work well with a walking boot and crutches. We were able to get 100% refunds for all the pre-paid fees we had paid for housing and airfare. Once I submitted the required documentation you quickly processed a full refund for the travel insurance we are unable to use. Thanks for helping us out. We are very disappointed we will miss visiting with our kids and grandkids. I'm glad we were not disappointed in seeking a refund.

Easy process & good customer service
I recently bought another policy with World Nomads for my current 6 month trip because I had a great experience with them on my last one. I unfortunately had to visit the hospital and purchase antibiotics on my last trip. They were extremely responsive, filing my claim was quick and simple, and they checked in on me (and asked me how I am feeling) once or twice every day until I healed! Once I returned home, my payment was processed promptly. All in all, it was a good experience and I love that they cover so much more than many others.

Highly Recommend WN
We have used World Nomads for about 14 trips since March 2020. Getting quotes is very easy. We have had to turn in 2 claims and the claims were readily reimbursed as promised. The online claim forms are easily completed as long as you have the required documentation (doctor's notes, receipts). The e-checks for reimbursement were sent in a timely manner. Hassle-free claim process
I bought a policy for an 9 month trip to Malaysia and Vietnam. WN was a little bit more expensive, but provided a higher level of coverage. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away while I was on this trip and I put in a claim for trip interruption and WN was great. Despite the fact that my country of residence was the UK and my grandmother lived in the US, WN covered my travel to the US for her funeral and back to Vietnam. The claim process was easy and straight forward and I received the payment very quickly (less than a month). The customer service reps I spoke to were very helpful. I would highly recommend WN for hassle-free travel insurance.

Excellent service, wouldn't use anyone else!
For the first time in all our travels we unfortunately both became unwell in Thailand resulting in having to get a doctor to our hotel on 2 occasions and the loss of 2 pre-booked tours. World Nomads were absolutely brilliant when we submitted our 2 separate claims, it was very easy and they paid both of the total amounts (less the $100 excess) into our bank account in less than a week. Happy Ending!
I never thought I’d actually have to file a claim with World Nomads. My iPhone was stolen off of me in the Milan train station despite my vigilance with all the pickpocket warnings — they are true magicians :( I notified World Nomads right away and from the start they made the claims process very easy. I’m sure having a police report of the theft (all in Italian) and phone receipt helped move the process along. From start to finish, my refund check was issued in less than two months’ time, which was very satisfactory to me. Thank you World Nomads. World Nomads travel insurance is worth every penny
It really sucked to have to cancel our trip due to a sudden medical problem (a blown knee joint requiring knee replacement) but we were relieved we had taken out coverage through World Nomads. The online claims process worked well for us. We only had to contact a claims rep at the beginning to get answers to a couple of preliminary questions. The rep was professional & gave us accurate & complete information. World Nomads & Trip Mate resolved our claim in our favor in a reasonable amount of time, and covered about 90% of our losses. We found this result totally acceptable for our particular situation. We would recommend World Nomads to anyone and plan to use their travel insurance again -- once one of us recuperates from knee replacement surgery and is able to travel again!

International trip and Covid!
We purchased insurance for a trip to Italy (from the US) taken in 2022. At the end of our trip, one of us contracted Covid, and due to quarantine requirements as well as a negative test requirement for flying home, I lost my return flight cost and had some additional expenses. My travel mate flew home as scheduled, but I had to stay for another week. While it was a bit cumbersome, I was able to document my losses, and I was reimbursed by the insurance company within a few weeks for my new return ticket cost as well as an expensive ($210) taxi ride from Siena to the Florence airport. The new flight ticket cost was over $1500 one-way, so it was quite a relief to have it covered! The Italian government paid for the quarantine hotel and meals, so the insurance company lucked out on that. I’m really glad we had insurance for this trip. It was our first time ever needing it.
