Travel insurance when off the grid

Ready to unplug and cleanse mind, body, and spirit? We have coverage for unexpected setbacks while you’re getting away from it all.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Whether off-grid for you means a remote mountain escape in Jasper National Park, a solo road trip in New Zealand, or experiencing rural village life by volunteering, it can be a great way to escape the stresses of daily life.

While you’re planning your off-grid getaway, don’t forget to consider travel insurance which could save you a few headaches and avoid some nasty hospital and medical bills.

Why should I consider travel insurance?

Going off-grid can be the ultimate form of social distancing if you’re seeking solitude, avoiding large crowds, and wanting to unplug from digital devices. Both our Standard and Explorer plans may offer coverage (up to the benefit limits) if:

  • You get injured and need medical transport or evacuation back to your home country.
  • You need coverage for your bags and valuables in case they’ve been lost, stolen or damaged. Keep the paperwork and receipts for your gear.
  • You’ve already left home and forgot to buy travel insurance.
  • You need coverage for emergency medical expenses and hospitalization costs for sudden injury or illness.
  • You’re looking for coverage for a range of adventure sports, activities, and experiences.

Don’t forget to read the policy wording as all plans are different and coverage will depend on your Country of Residence. Never assume you’ll be covered in every situation, as benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions may apply. If you are still unsure about what you are covered for then contact us.

Want to know more about what is and isn’t covered by travel insurance? Read your policy and contact us if you have any questions.

Rental coverage when your road trip comes to a halt

Some World Nomads plans offer damage collision waiver coverage depending on your Country of Residence and your choice of insurance plan, a Standard or an Explorer. Make sure you read your policy and check the amount of coverage your plan provides.

Remember, if you leave your gear in your rental vehicle unattended or unsecured, and it gets stolen, our plans are unlikely to cover it.

If you get into a car accident, rental car travel insurance may help by covering damage to your vehicle and the cost of repairs, as well as charges imposed by the rental company, depending on your circumstances.

Make sure you report the damage to the local authorities and the rental car company as soon as possible. Also, it almost goes without saying, damage due to irresponsible behaviour will not be covered.

Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you purchase there may be coverage for vehicle rentals. However, coverage may not be available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Travel insurance tip 1: before you rent that 1960s Jaguar E-type you’ve always dreamed of, check the policy. Many classic or luxury cars are not covered.

Coverage for adventure seekers and sports lovers

Off-grid getaways are a great way to engage in some high-energy activities.

Maybe abseiling or a thrilling zip line is your thing? Before you pull the rip cord on that adventure, check that your insurance covers your activityDepending on your Country of Residence, you may need to include an insurance upgrade when you buy to have coverage for some activities. If you don’t have the right level of coverage, you won’t be able to claim if something goes wrong.

Many policies cover white water rafting and kayaking, for example, but Class 6, Extreme and Exploratory Rapids aren’t covered. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. Your policy may have conditions and exclusions.

Top travel insurance tip 2: when it comes to any sport, safety should always come first. Responsible behavior is vital for your health and safety. If you need emergency medical treatment or evacuation, you, or someone with you, should contact our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible. They will contact a suitable assistance or ambulance company and arrange medical care.

Coverage for unexpected medical emergencies

Our plans cover emergency medical expenses when you're sick or injured. If your injuries are more serious than minor bumps and scratches, you may need to get to a hospital. Our plans include emergency evacuation coverage for ambulances or transfers to an appropriate medical facility. Be sure to check the maximum benefit amount and terms of coverage in your policy.

Travel insurance tip 3: if your medical emergency means you need to return to your Country of Residence, then your coverage may include medical repatriation.

Go REALLY off the grid, but check your destinations

OK, so there’s off-grid and then there’s really off the grid. Just be aware that the more remote your destination, the more chance there is that these may not be covered. Make sure to check if your off-the-grid destination(s) are covered by our policies.

Some destinations may not be covered due to violence, terrorism or possibly due to being designated a COVID hotspot. Additionally, there will also be certain activities, including volunteering activities, that we cannot cover as they are too dangerous.

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

What does my travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance tip 4: Depending on your Country of Residence, if you decide to travel to a country where there’s already been a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning or its equivalent put in place by your government, then your policy will be cancelled. Governments can issue or change travel warnings without notice, so always check with World Nomads before you pay anything towards your trip.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

Travel insurance while camping

Simple and flexible travel insurance to take you camping around the world. Buy at home or while travelling, and claim online from anywhere in the world.

Get ready to discover the globe while camping

Camping is the start of many adventures for New Zealanders chasing wilderness and open skies. Plant yourself among the forests of Slovenia or beneath a star-studded desert sky to experience more of everything on a camping break.

What’s covered for camping?

Travel insurance can help with unexpected costs if a sudden illness or injury lands you in hospital, if you’re left empty handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your camping gear in it!), or if severe weather puts a dent in your travel plans.

World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Overseas emergency medical: the great outdoors can be good for the soul but not if it ends in sickness or injury. Your policy may cover you for your overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us. You can submit a claim to recover unexpected medical expenses while camping abroad.
  • Medical evacuation:if your secluded camping spot is far away from medical facilities, our cover may help get you transported to the medical facility best for your care. Subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Baggage protection: had your stuff swiped while camping? Our gear cover may help with replacing belongings that were stolen. Remember to keep copies of your receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • Cancellation protection: if severe weather or a sick or injured travel buddy affects your trip before it’s even begun, and you have no choice but to cancel your trip, there is cover to help with those non-refundable expenses of cancelling your camping trip.
  • Family plans: cover includes two adults and up to eight dependents on the one policy. Plus, plans can be extended while still travelling for up to 12 months from your departure date (terms and conditions apply).

Cover for adventure or sport activities while camping

Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for level 1 sport and adventure activities that include camping and hiking up to 2,000 metres, and activities such as surfing, kayaking and bungy jumping.

For Kiwis looking for more adventurous pursuits you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re planning on camping or hiking up to 6,000 metres or if you’re abseiling or mountain biking. Specify all the activities you are planning on your trip when you get your quote as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your PDS for details or contact us.

Why consider travel insurance for camping?

Camping holidays can serve up some serious surprises. If that hike to catch the sunrise turns into a nasty misstep and you need a doctor urgently, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. They can help direct you to the nearest medical centre or arrange emergency transport to the most appropriate facility.

Traveller Tip: check you have any relevant paperwork as you’ll probably be asked for proof for several things such as entry permits for countries you’ll be visiting, special tourist visas, digital COVID certificates, proof of vaccinations and a negative PCR test, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.

For self-drive camping trips, the Explorer Plan has cover for the rental insurance excess if you’re involved in a car accident. If you’re taking your own sports equipment such as a kayak, the Explorer Plan also offers cover to hire replacement equipment if:

  • It is accidentally damaged by a carrier; or
  • It is delayed or lost by a carrier for more than 12 hours (the waiting period).

Please note sporting equipment that is checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight.

Camping destinations

Awaken your sense of adventure camping in:

  • Old-growth forests on the coast of the Baltic Sea in northern Sweden.
  • Shiretoko National Park, Japan for hot springs and waterfalls.

What’s not covered?

Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (such as camping in an area that is against local authority warnings). Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Any pre-existing medical conditions which are not listed as an automatically covered pre-existing medical condition as per your PDS. Check your policy wording carefully.
  • If you do not use a professional qualified and licensed guide and operator for activities where required.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
  • Unattended baggage or personal items.
  • The policy excess per person per insured event where applicable (check the Summary of Benefits in your PDS).

Travel Insurance Tip: before you head off into the wilderness, be sure to follow the camping regulations that apply to that region or country. If you unknowingly cross into another country that is not on your certificate of insurance, it could affect your cover.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Travel insurance for a trip to Tanzania

Tanzania is home to epic, unspoiled wildernesses where the Big Five roam free-range. Our travel insurance tips will help you enjoy it full throttle.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Lions, leopards, and rhinos... they’re only the beginning of the jaw-dropping sights you may encounter on an adventurous trip to Tanzania. The country has 21 national parks, including Gombe Stream National Park (where Dr. Jane Goodall founded a chimpanzee research centre in 1965) and Serengeti National Park, the safari mecca where 4,000 lions and 550 cheetahs roam among the grassy plains.

Like much-needed mosquito netting, World Nomads is here to help protect you and can help take the edge off your worries so you can maximize the sheer beauty of it all instead.

With World Nomads plans, you can trust that you can be supported with benefits for:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Baggage and personal belongings
  • Trip interruption and delay
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
  • Adventure activities

Pickpocketing and other crimes

Crime can be a problem in Tanzania. Tourists can be the victims of theft, carjacking and mugging, especially in crowded cities. When you have a World Nomads policy, you may be covered for the loss of your belongings, up to their depreciated value, and to the per-article and total maximum benefit amount.

Always file a police report and hold on to a copy for World Nomads. Carrying colorful Tanzanian shillings? Depending on your Country of Residence, there’s limited or no coverage for cash, so leave what you won’t need for a day out in the safe at your hotel, if possible.

Traveler's tip: snatch and grabs occur in busy places including markets and even in traffic. If you feel like someone is getting a bit too close, duck into a building or shop to get some breathing space. When in a car, keep windows closed and belongings stowed out of view.

Natural disasters

Rain, rain, go away... during Tanzania’s waterlogged monsoon months (March through May and November thru December), flooded roads may be impassable, or you could be stuck in a cyclone. Translation? Ruined plans and you missing out on things you already paid for.

When surprises such as this happen, World Nomads can step in to support you: depending on your Country of Residence, your coverage could include anything from trip cancellation and trip interruption to an evacuation to a safe place. Your choice of a Standard or an Explorer Plan may also decide what benefits you get.

Just note that if a natural disaster has already been forecast or happened after you purchased your policy, it’s not reimbursable. (In other words, you can’t get an insurance policy for something you already know about)

Adventure activity coverage

If you’re planning a trip to Tanzania, you may want to consider a World Nomads plan. World Nomads covers more than 150 adventure sports and activities. Read our Help Center article on adventure sports coverage to ensure your activities are included. Additional premiums may apply, and coverage may vary between the Standard and Explorer plans.

Your World Nomads plan can come in handy if tracking elephants on a guided walking safari through the Selous Game Reserve or paddle boarding in a lagoon near Zanzibar After all, a twisted ankle or appendicitis can happen anywhere; and you may want emergency medical coverage for sudden accidents or sicknesses.

Conditions may apply. For example, you may be covered for abseiling – also known as climbing a rock or rappelling – but only up to a certain elevation. Read your policy for more details or contact us with your coverage questions.

Traveler's tip: do your research when it comes to companies offering safaris, tours and other activities; this applies not just in Tanzania but across Africa. Don’t assume that every company has a good track record when it comes to safety such as using proper equipment or employing skilled staffers.

Medical emergencies

World Nomads policy holders have access to 24/7 Emergency Assistance... good news if you’re up a Tanzanian creek without a paddle. Experts on the line can connect you to the nearest qualified hospitals, assist with paperwork, and more. You may also need to touch base with them before undergoing any major medical procedures or evacuation services.

Traveler's tip: carry a travel first aid kit which contains the basics plus extras such as bandages, anti-malarial pills, etc. That way you can start treating any potential health issues before seeking medical assistance.

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything. All of the information we provide is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the plans described. Coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage.

A flight delay

My flight was delayed due to mechanical issues, which caused me to miss my connecting flight to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. This delay meant that I missed the first night in my hotel and the pre-arranged transfer from the airport. I also needed to purchase a new transport from the airport to the Machame Gate at Kilimanjaro National Park.

Travel Insurance for Surfing

Surf smart: Learn how travel insurance coverage for surfing can help when the unexpected hits, for Canadians

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance:

  • Travel insurance for surfers may help cover emergency medical expenses, trip cancellations, and damaged surfboards—whether you're surfing in Costa Rica, Europe, or beyond.
  • Coverage may include emergency medical treatment due to surf-related injuries, like reef cuts, board collisions, and jellyfish stings.
  • 24/7 non-insurance emergency assistance is available if you run into trouble in or out of the water.
  • Choose from two travel insurance plans: Standard or Explorer, and add optional higher activity level coverage to customize your plan based on your trip style and level of adventure.
  • World Nomads plans also cover 250+ other adventure activities, from scuba diving and snorkeling to zip-lining and jungle trekking.

Whether you're catching waves in Bali, tackling reef breaks in Fiji, or just learning to surf on vacation, accidents can happen. Wipeouts, board collisions, reef cuts, or even jellyfish stings can quickly turn your dream surf trip into one you’d rather forget. That’s where travel insurance can step in — helping with emergency medical costs and other unexpected events.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my surf trip?

Chasing waves is thrilling, but even the best-planned trip can run into trouble. Wipeouts, sudden illness, or flight delays can disrupt your itinerary, while gear damage or theft can leave you stranded without a board. Travel insurance plans for surfers can help with the costs of medical care if you’re hurt, reimburse you for cancelled plans if you're too unwell to travel, and assist with lost or damaged equipment.

Whether you're paddling out in Europe or heading to remote islands in search of world-class waves, World Nomads offers plans that support your sense of adventure—backed by 24/7 emergency assistance and coverage for more than 250 sports and activities.

What’s covered by World Nomads Travel Insurance for surfers?

At World Nomads, we know your surf trip is about more than just riding waves. That’s why our travel insurance coverage for surfers includes protection for over 250 other adventure sports and experiences – from jungle hikes and scuba dives to zip-lining and snorkeling. Whether you’re chasing swells or exploring off the beach, we offer two travel insurance plans with different levels of activity coverage to suit your trip style, budget, and adventure level. Check out our (lengthy) activity list and ensure you pick the plan and activity level that covers everything you plan to do.

*All coverage is subject to plan terms and conditions. Be sure you read and understand your plan documents. Any questions, just ask!

Nomads tip: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my surf trip?

  • Standard Plan – Best suited for backpackers, budget travelers and families. Includes up to $5,000,000 CAD in emergency medical expenses and $2500 for trip cancellation. This is our most basic plan, but it packs a punch.
  • Explorer Plan – For those trips you’ll be talking about for years to come! Provides enhanced benefit limits, like up to $500 CAD for baggage delays.

You can compare plans and coverage limits when you get a quote.

Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Plan is limited once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels, too.

What’s not covered by the travel insurance plan I buy for surfing internationally?

Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something careless or out of control (like tackle big-wave off-shore surfing when you’re only a beginner). For example, some things we may not cover include:

  • Surfing under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Reckless behavior or failure to follow safety advice
  • Search-and-rescue costs.
  • Any damage related to the wear and tear of sports equipment.
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • Travel within your home province.

Top safety tips for your surfing adventure

  • Always check local conditions and surf reports
  • Wear reef booties and rash guards for protection
  • Know your limits — and don’t surf alone
  • Use a leash and inspect your gear before hitting the waves
  • Respect local surf etiquette
  • Save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Line on your phone and print out a copy of your travel insurance documents. If you need help in a pinch, you don’t want to be searching for who to call.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork. Any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases and a loss or theft report. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you need to make a claim.

Travel insurance cover and tips for expats

Cover for expats worldwide for medical emergencies, sports and activities, trip cancellations, and more.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

The information and details found in this article is not suitable for residents of Australia who are expatriates.

World Nomads travel insurance is designed for adventure seekers who understand that living and working in other countries and among different cultures is a great privilege, and an education. Your decision to move abroad is a big one, considering the benefits of travel insurance may be beneficial for you and your loved ones.

What expats should keep in mind?

We've put together this expat tips checklist to help you plan before you set off on your next working holiday. Please note, benefit limits, terms and conditions apply depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected.

  1. Change is constant, embrace it. Despite detailed planning pre-departure, things can change. We know how important flexibility is when abroad, so you can buy a policy before you leave home or while traveling for as long, or as little, as you need. If you decide to stay longer in a place than you thought you would or decide to change direction on a whim, we are happy to extend your policy and help you choose the right level of cover for your needs.
  2. Vaccinations are not new. For years, there have been rules in place for travelers regarding immunizations against serious illnesses, and the COVID-19 pandemic is no different. When planning your expat experience, check with embassies, global health bodies (such as the World Health Organization, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, etc) and government authorities of the countries you're hoping to visit about their entry requirements. Some countries now require proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test result (usually taken 48-72 hours before arrival). Read our COVID-19 Travel Insurance article and keep your vaccine and test records with you – they’re as important as your passport these days.
  3. Not all country entry rules are the same. We know the rules for entry to our own country, but what is acceptable in one country might not be the case in another, so do your research pre-departure. Check the entry rules and regulations for the places you plan to visit. The last thing you want to do is arrive somewhere new to you, only to be turned around for not having the correct paperwork or because you decided to travel to a country that had a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning in place.
  4. It’s not too late to buy travel insurance once you’ve set off. If you’ve been so busy that insurance is an after-thought, it’s never too late. World Nomads offers insurance for travelers between 18 and 65 (up to 69 years for US residents). Our policies are available to most nationalities who are working or traveling outside of their Country of Residence. You can buy a policy online using a credit card, and this can be done even after you’ve left home, but there are some exceptions, so check your policy details before purchasing.
  5. If you plan on driving overseas, do your homework. Driving in another country can be a big deal and at times quite scary, especially when the road rules differ, so make sure you know the requirements. Check the licensing rules (you may need to apply for an international driving permit depending on which country you’re from). Our Explorer Plan policy may be able to help with rental car excess if you’re involved in an accident, but you need to be correctly licensed, adhere to local laws, and have taken out a rental policy with the car hire company.
  6. If you’re a digital nomad, ensure you’re travel ready. Most expat travelers today don’t leave home without their tech devices – we’re talking digital cameras, laptops, air pods, drones etc. Aside from helping to document your travels, they’re not cheap and should be properly protected. At World Nomads, our policies may cover a wide range of everyday gadgets, but how we do that and how much we insure them for depends on the plan you choose. Terms and conditions apply.
  7. Adventure travel is fun, but also risky. Expats are an adventurous bunch, so it’s not surprising that many exciting activities will rate high on the to-do list. Our plans include cover for more than 150 activities globally – everything from backpacking to kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping, but not all are covered under every plan, so read the full list here. You may need to pay an additional premium for higher-risk activities.
  8. Travel cover doesn’t replace international medical insurance. While we may offer cover for overseas emergency medical expenses, any treatment must be certified as medically necessary by an authorized medical practitioner or paramedic overseas and agreed by our Emergency Assistance Team. Your employer or host should take care of your medical cover. We also have some exclusions when it comes to pre-existing conditions. Our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 in case of emergencies.

This is not a full list of what's covered. There are benefit limits and terms and conditions that apply. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.
