Skiing and Snowboarding Travel Insurance Coverage

Canadian Residents Can Protect Against Skiing Injuries, Damaged Gear & More

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

  • Coverage for the slopes: World Nomads offers travel insurance for skiing and snowboarding to help cover medical emergencies, stolen gear and trip cancellations.
  • Emergency medical evacuation: Our plans include emergency medical evacuation coverage if you get injured while skiing or snowboarding in remote areas.
  • Gear protection on and off the mountain: We provide gear protection if your ski equipment is stolen or accidentally damaged by your common carrier during your trip.
  • Coverage if an injury cuts your trip short: If your trip is disrupted by illness or injuries (amongst other covered reasons), adventure travel insurance for skiing may help cover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.

Are you dreaming of skiing down slopes in Italy, Austria, Switzerland or France? How about within Canada? No matter where you’re headed for wintry fun, it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected when skiing and snowboarding. Ski travel insurance for Europethe US and within Canada all include a range of benefits that could help with everything from stolen ski gear to unexpected medical emergency expenses

Why should I consider travel insurance for my international ski trip?

Unexpected issues can mess up even the most carefully planned ski trips. For example, those seeking fresh powder flock to Japan each winter to hit the slopes, but what happens if an injury puts a halt to your fun? Ski insurance for Japan may help you bounce back quickly with support for medical and travel emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently when you’re skiing outside of your home province.

Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Insurance Plan may not meet your travel insurance coverage needs once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels as long as you are traveling outside of your home province.

Ski and Snowboard travel insurance: What may be covered?

Whether you’re in fresh powder or on the bunny hill, navigating steep (and even not so steep) terrain can be tricky. It only takes one bad fall or collision to end up with a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder or a wrist fracture. If you’re heading south to the United States to hit the slopes in Breckenridge, Vail or Palisades, you may want to consider getting a quote for travel insurance for skiing in the US.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
For injuries when skiing that require emergency medical treatment

  2. 24/7 Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation, on or off the slopes

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
    Damaged or stolen ski gear

  4. Trip Cancellations, Trip Interruptions and Delays
Travel protection for your unused, pre-paid, nonrefundable trip costs and unexpected expenses if your trip is interrupted.

Even if your main goal is to go skiing, you’ll probably also be doing other things like snowmobiling or snow biking. That’s totally fine, because there are over 250+ sports, activities and experiences that could be covered when you purchase adventure travel insurance. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list skiing, snowboarding and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. Costs may vary depending on the activities you list. Most forms of Skiing are a Level 3 activity and require an additional premium to cover, so be sure to buy the proper coverage for your ski trip.

If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

Nomads tip: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

Special conditions and exclusions may apply to certain activities, check the Travel Insurance Policy for full details.

What may not be covered when on a ski trip?

Save the cocktails for apres-ski. If you start taking shots off of the shot ski, and then get hurt, you may not be covered. Travel insurance for skiing won’t cover you if you are injured when you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some other things that aren’t covered include:

  • Unattended baggage, ski gear or personal items
  • Damage to ski equipment while you’re using it
  • Not following government ‘Do Not Travel’ advisories issued by the Canadian government
  • Travelling or skiing in your home province
  • Search and rescue missions
  • Not following the International Ski Federation code or the ski resort’s regulations
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy
  • Competitions, racing or national squad training, acrobatics, tricks, stunting, freestyle, aerials or jumps.
  • Ignoring your doctor if they have explicitly advised you not to go skiing or snowboarding

Top safety tips we recommend for skiing

From our own time on the slopes, we’ve discovered that you never know what might happen next. We’ve learned that it helps tremendously to be prepared in those situations – whether you’re skiing in Europe, Japan, the US, or even here in Canada. Here are a few of our personal tips that you may find helpful when planning your next ski vacation.

  • Always wear a helmet that fits you properly.
  • Dress in multiple layers and look for insulated clothing made of moisture-wicking material. You’ll also want to make sure your outerwear is waterproof.
  • Take a lesson from a reputable instructor.
  • Ski within your skill level. (If you’ve just taken your first lesson, you should probably avoid the black diamonds for a while.)
  • Control your speed and stay in control.
  • Stay on marked trails.
  • Check with the Public Health Agency of Canada to see if they have issued any travel health notices for the destination where you’ll be skiing.
  • Register with Canadians Abroad to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Save a copy of your travel insurance for skiing documents in your phone. Have the phone number for the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team easily accessible as well.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for skiing and snowboarding. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Are skiing and snowboarding covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, skiing and snowboarding may be covered under all four plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance, but you’ll still need to list these activities when you purchase your travel insurance for skiing policy. Most skiing activities are considered Level 3; if you aren’t sure if something is covered, we suggest you contact us to ask.

  • What types of incidents are covered while on a ski trip?

If your trip is cancelleddelayed, or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your unused, non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses (up to the policy limits), and this could include unused, prepaid, non-refundable tours that you paid for in advance. If you get hurt while skiing and require medical assistance, emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You could also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags or if the Canadian government issues a travel advisory telling travellers not to go to a destination on your itinerary.

  • Do I get my money back if I cancel a trip?

Trip cancellation coverage is included in all four travel insurance plans offered by World Nomads. With this type of coverage, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your pre-paid, unused, non-refundable trip costs such as flights, tours and accommodations if your trip is cancelled due to one of the covered trip cancellation risks under the policy. World Nomads also offers a Cancel for Any Reason (“CFAR”) optional upgrade. This optional upgrade can only be purchased with our Explorer Plan and Epic Plan (up to 50% CFAR benefit. Maximum benefit limits apply).

Pregnancy Travel Insurance

Expecting a new bundle of joy? Learn why Canadians may want to consider travel insurance for pregnancy

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance

  • World Nomads offers single trip and annual multi-trip plans for Canadian residents who are pregnant
  • Plans include travel insurance benefits for certain pregnancy-related medical emergencies during the first 26 weeks
  • If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a pregnancy complication, you may be reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable, unused, forfeited travel arrangements that you made in advance such as hotel accommodation, flights and tours

Why should you consider travel insurance that covers pregnancy?

Did you book your dream vacation and then find out that you’re pregnant a week later? Or do you just need a little babymoon to have some relaxing time before your little one arrives? Either way, many women travel while pregnant, and you can too. According to a survey by the Journal of Travel Medicine, over half of their respondents travelled abroad while pregnant. You’ll want to consult with your doctor first to make sure your pregnancy isn’t considered high risk, but even if it’s not, unexpected situations can always happen.

Unanticipated pregnancy complications can disrupt travel plans, but World Nomads offers travel insurance plans that cover pregnancy-related medical emergencies within the first 26 weeks of pregnancy. Pregnancy travel insurance also covers trip cancellation and interruption, and you may be reimbursed for the non-refundable, unused, forfeited, prepaid trip costs you’ve spent for things like tours, transportation and hotel accommodation if your plans change because of a covered reason (up to maximum limits listed in your policy ).

Tips for travelling while pregnant

  • Always check with your doctor before travelling. If your doctor says you shouldn’t be travelling, and you do anyway, you may not be covered by your pregnancy travel insurance benefits.
  • Book an aisle seat. It makes it easier to get up and down to go to the restroom.
  • Check with your travel providers to see if they have any restrictions for travelling while pregnant. For example, some airlines and cruises may not allow you to board when you’ve passed a certain point in your pregnancy.
  • Before you leave, see if you need a note from your doctor. Some airlines may ask for a doctor’s note that states how far along you are in your pregnancy and confirms that you aren’t high risk.
  • To help with circulation, wear compression socks when flying or taking long rides in a car or on a train. Women are more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT) when they are pregnant. The potential for these blood clots is higher when you’re travelling and not moving for long periods of time, but compression socks can help.
  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can cause Braxton Hicks contractions.
  • Pack all of your medications in your carry-on bag. If you have pregnancy travel insurance, it may also include coverage for lost and delayed bags, but you won’t want to be without any necessary medications.
  • Avoid strenuous excursions. Even though World Nomads covers over 250 sports, activities and experiences, you may want to save some adventures like bungee jumping until after the baby arrives.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for pregnancy. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Is it ok to travel while pregnant?

Many women travel with confidence while pregnant and have no problems at all. However, that’s something you should discuss with your doctors. They can take a look at your overall health and risk factors and determine if it’s ok for you to travel while pregnant. Just read your travel insurance policy and make sure you understand what it does and doesn’t cover. Pregnancy complications after the 26th week of pregnancy or any time after the expected delivery date aren’t covered. It also won’t cover the costs of childbirth if the baby comes while you’re travelling.

  • Can I fly while I’m pregnant?
That’s up to you to discuss with your doctors but it may affect your travel insurance. You may not be covered if they say you shouldn’t be travelling. Your airline might also ask for a letter from your doctor confirming your expected due date and whether you’re at risk of any complications. It is important to check your airline’s policy regarding pregnancy. If you get to the airport and your airline won’t let you fly, you may not be able to make a claim.
  • What happens if I have pregnancy complications while travelling?

You may be covered for emergency medical expenses if you experience complications of pregnancy during your trip. However, you must be covered by your Government Health Insurance Plan (”GHIP”) for the full duration of your trip. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, your emergency medical coverage will be limited to $40,000 CAD.. Pre-existing medical conditions that are excluded in the policy may not be covered, though.

It’s also important to note that pregnancy complications after the 26th week of pregnancy or any time after the expected delivery date aren’t covered. Travel insurance also won’t cover the costs of childbirth if the baby comes while you’re travelling.

  • What type of pregnancy complications may be covered?

Pregnancy complications that happen within the first 26 weeks of pregnancy may be covered by your World Nomads travel insurance benefits. Complications related to pregnancy are conditions whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy. These may include, but are not limited to:

    • Hyperemesis gravidarum
    • Preeclampsia
    • Eclampsia
    • Gestational diabetes
    • Gestational hypertension
    • Acute nephritis
    • Nephrosis
    • Cardiac decompensation
    • Spontaneous miscarriage

Pregnancy complications after the 26th week of pregnancy or any time after the expected delivery date aren’t covered. Travel insurance also won’t cover the costs of childbirth if the baby comes while you’re travelling.

  • Can I cancel my trip if I have pregnancy complications before travelling?

Yes, all of the World Nomads Travel Insurance plans for Canadian residents include trip cancellation insurance benefits. You may be reimbursed for unused, forfeited, prepaid, non-refundable expenses that you paid for in advance if you suffer an emergency medical condition such as unexpected complications related to your pregnancy before your trip that prevent you from travelling. You’ll need documentation from your physician regarding the diagnosis if you plan to make a claim, though.

How much does travel insurance cost?

Cover that goes beyond the basics is often more affordable than people expect – and you’ll be glad you got it if anything unexpected happens. At World Nomads, you can get a quote in minutes, with the cost depending on factors like your destination, trip length and the level of cover you choose. As a rough guide, many Canadians spend around 4–8% of their total trip cost on travel insurance, though this can vary depending on the type of trip and activities planned. If you add optional Cancel For Any Reason insurance, which allows you to cancel for any reason that’s not otherwise covered by your plan – even if you simply change your mind about travelling – you can expect to pay more.

Top tips to keep you and your valuables safe on your travels

  • Take sensible precautions to stay safe late at night – and avoid walking alone.
  • Use reputable transport options and avoid unlicensed taxis or unofficial transfers.
  • Split important cards and cash. Avoid keeping your bank/credit cards, cash and passport in the same bag.
  • Create digital backups of documents like your passport, visas, travel insurance details, and prescriptions.
  • Check for Canadian government safety and health advisories for the destinations you’re travelling to, and leave yourself plenty of time to get the recommended travel vaccinations – some require more than one jab.
  • Register with Canadians Abroad to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Be mindful of local customs and laws to avoid unintentional offences
  • Monitor weather conditions and local advisories, especially in regions prone to extreme weather or natural events
  • Share your itinerary with someone at home and check in regularly while travelling
  • Be cautious with food and water – stick to bottled or filtered water, avoid ice in uncertain settings, and choose freshly cooked food over anything that’s been sitting out

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about online travel insurance cover. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What if I’m travelling within Canada – do I still need travel insurance?

It’s not mandatory but is strongly recommended. World Nomads’ coverage starts when you leave your home province and provides essential protection against a wide range of mishaps that you could encounter on the road. A good travel insurance plan can help prevent unexpected events from turning into full-blown disasters. Keep in mind that your GHIP covers the basics out of province for emergency medical care, but not everything – which is why many travellers still take out travel insurance, even for trips within Canada

  • What is emergency evacuation and why might I need it?

If you’re seriously sick or injured in a remote location without adequate medical care, emergency evacuation can cover the cost of transporting you to the nearest suitable facility or even back home. It may also include additional support, such as bringing a family member to your bedside in certain situations.

  • What if I have to cut my trip short?

Trip interruption cover helps if your journey is cut short after it’s already begun. If you need to return home early or miss part of your itinerary due to a covered reason, it may reimburse unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel costs.

Travel Insurance for the Schengen Area

Canadian residents can protect their trips to the 29 countries in the Schengen area

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance

  • World Nomads offers travel insurance for single trip and annual multi-trip plans for Canadian residents who are travelling to countries in the Schengen area
  • Coverage for emergency medical expenses, trip delay, lost bags, natural disasters, and more may be included (up to the maximum limits shown in your policy documents)
  • Some plans may also include travel insurance benefits, such as rental car protection and roadside assistance
  • An optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ upgrade may be available for the Explorer and Epic plans offered by World Nomads

Why should you consider travel insurance for the Schengen area?

The Schengen Agreement makes it easier for travellers to visit multiple countries, and every day over 3.5 million people are crossing internal borders in these 29 countries. The treaty essentially means that when you cross the border into one of these countries, you have access to all of them (that is, you're free to travel between these countries with no border controls and no passport checks). Within the Schengen area there are so many adventures you can have. But what happens if you get hurt skiing in Switzerland and need to get emergency medical care, or if your bags get lost on the way to France? Travel insurance for Schengen countries may help with some of these unexpected situations.

Exclusions

  • Travel to countries that you don’t list when you purchase your plan
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home province
  • Activities not listed as covered in your policy documents
  • Pre-existing conditions, as outlined in your policy documents
  • Unattended baggage or personal items
  • Injuries that happen while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Situations outside of the limits, terms, and conditions of coverage stated in your policy documents

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for the Schengen area. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What is the Schengen Agreement?
The Schengen Agreement is a treaty that has been signed by 29 countries. Once you’ve crossed the border into one of them, you’re free to travel between the Schengen countries with no border controls and no passport checks. These 29 countries have agreed on a common visa application form for visitors from outside the area. So if your travels are taking you to Europe you might need to apply for this ‘Schengen visa'. We say 'might' because not everyone needs one...it all depends on where you're from and what countries you'll be visiting in Europe.
  • Do I need a Schengen visa?

If you are a Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport travelling to Schengen countries for business or tourism, you will not need a visa as long as your stay does not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period. If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than 90 days in any 180-day period, you must contact the high commission or embassy of the country or countries you plan to visit and obtain the appropriate visa before you travel.

Also, be aware that ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will start operations at the end of 2026. This will affect visa-exempt travellers (including those from Canada) that are going to enter 30 European countries. Travellers will be asked to apply via the official ETIAS website or mobile app. Each applicant will undergo a detailed security check to determine their status for entry into any of the Schengen Zone countries.

  • Does World Nomads Travel Insurance meet the Schengen visa requirements?
Yes…it does! If you are from one of the countries that requires a Schengen visa, you need to prove that you have adequate travel insurance that is valid for the entire period of your stay (or transit) in the Schengen area. World Nomads travel insurance policies do provide this cover (in fact, they cover much more than the required EUR €30,000) and therefore it should be accepted as part of your Schengen visa application.
  • When does ETIAS start?

ETIAS will start in the last quarter of 2026, but an exact date has not been set yet. This will affect the process for visa-exempt travellers (including those from Canada) that are going to enter 30 European countries. Once it starts, travellers will be asked to apply via the official ETIAS website or mobile app. Each applicant will undergo a detailed security check to determine their status for entry into any of the Schengen Zone countries.

  • How long can I stay in the Schengen countries without a visa?
As a Canadian citizen, you can visit Schengen area countries without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than 90 days in any 180-day period, you must contact the high commission or embassy of the country or countries you plan to visit and obtain the appropriate visa before you travel.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Long-Term Travel Insurance Plan for Extended Trips

Maybe you’re one of 7,500 Canadian students who travel abroad to study in the U.K., or perhaps you’ve just retired and want to travel the world. Depending on the reason for your long-term trip, there may be different things you want to consider.

World Nomads offers single trip and annual multi-trip plans for Canadian residents, and when you get a quote for travel insurance, you’ll see multiple options. It may be tempting to consider the cheapest coverage option without reading the plan wording.

However, you’ll want to pick the plan that has the best travel insurance coverage for long-term trips, and offers the level of coverage you’ll need for your particular trip.

When deciding which plan is best for your trip, you might want to ask yourself:

  • How long will I be gone on my trip?

If it is over 14 days, you may want to consider the Standard, Epic, or Explorer plan. Those plans may cover trips up to 365 days. Although the Annual Multi-Trip Plan covers all of your trips outside of your home province for up to 14 days, it is limited to trips that are 14 days or less.

  • How much did I spend on my trip?

Long-term trips are usually more expensive, so look at the total you’ve invested in your vacation and then compare that to the maximum limits in the plans. If you spent a lot of money on your trip, you may want to consider the plans that have the highest maximum limits of coverage – the Explorer and Epic plans.

  • What kind of activities will I be doing while I’m travelling?

Level 1 activities are covered automatically as long as you list them when buying, but if you’ll be participating in a Level 2 or Level 3 activity, you’ll need to upgrade your plan and pay the additional premium.

  • Do I think there’s a possibility that I may decide not to go on my trip?

Trip cancellation coverage only covers certain reasons for cancellation. If you think you may change your mind, you may want to consider adding on the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ coverage.

If you have any questions about what is covered, you can contact us and ask. Our team will be happy to assist.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for long term travel insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Do I still need to have a Government Health Insurance Plan?
Canadians may be covered for trips lasting up to 365 days under a single-trip plan, but you must be covered by your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the full duration of your trip. If you are travelling outside your home province for more than 183 days (212 for Ontario and Newfoundland residents), you must get written evidence of extension from your Government Health Insurance Plan. If you do not have GHIP for the full duration of your trip, your total limit for all emergency medical benefits will be $40,000.
  • Is long-term travel insurance the same as expat or international health insurance?
No. Long-term travel insurance is designed for travellers on extended trips who still consider another country their primary residence. Long-term travel insurance may cover unexpected events only, whereas expat or international health insurance may cover more routine health issues. Expat or international health insurance is for those relocating abroad permanently or for an extended period of residency. If you’re unsure which suits you, check your travel plans and duration before purchasing.
  • Can I buy long-term travel insurance after I’ve already left home?

Yes! With World Nomads, you may be able to buy a long-term travel insurance plan even after your trip has started. As long as you have an internet connection, you can get a quote and purchase coverage. If you buy a World Nomads plan while travelling, waiting periods and conditions may apply. There is a 48-hour waiting period before you have emergency medical coverage for injury or sickness. Also, after an event has occurred, like a natural disaster, you can’t be covered for that specific event. New events may still be covered, but if you’ve bought your policy after a storm is named we won’t be able to cover you for losses related to that storm.

  • Which travel insurance plan should I get if I’m going on a long trip?

All of the single trip plans offered by World Nomads may cover long-term trips that are up to 365 days in length. If you’re taking a trip that is more than two weeks long, you’ll want to consider the Standard, Explorer, or Epic plan. The annual multi-trip plan covers more trips (including all trips outside of your home province in a 365-day period), but it doesn’t cover trips that are over 14 days.

When you get a quote, you’ll be able to compare the coverage and maximum limits of each plan side by side. We encourage you to think about all of the activities you’ll be participating in, as well as how much you’ve spent on your trip. If you have any questions about anything, reach out to our team and they’ll be happy to assist.

Taking the kids along this time? We love seeing young travellers discover the world. Travelling with kids is full of adventure – and a few inevitable squabbles along the way. But when children are part of the journey, even minor travel disruptions can feel significant. Family travel insurance may help you manage those unexpected moments and keep your trip on track. Travel insurance for families may help cover medical emergenciestrip interruptions, or other unexpected events that can disrupt your journey.

What may be covered on a family trip

What may not be covered?

  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unattended.
  • Pre-existing conditions exclusions apply to medical conditions and/or symptoms that existed prior to your policy start date.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the covered activities list.

Important to know

World Nomads Travel Insurance can cover your family travels within Canada or abroad. Wherever you’re travelling to, you will still need to have Government Health Insurance Plan coverage in your home province while you are on your trip. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is CAD $40,000 per person.

What happens if you or your travel companion becomes ill or injured while on a trip with the kids?

World Nomads family travel insurance plans may cover the transport of your minor children back home, accompanied by an attendant if necessary. With travel insurance for kids and parents, you can focus on making memories, knowing your family may be protected if things don’t go as planned.

Who is covered under a family travel insurance policy?

When you buy a family travel insurance plan, coverage may extend to:

  • Parents or legal guardians travelling with their dependent children (under 21 years of age or up to 25 years of age if they are full-time students).
  • Families who live in the same province and are Canadian residents
  • Your dependent natural, adopted, step or foster children.
  • Trips where at least one adult is the legal guardian of the dependent children.
  • Up to seven dependent children included on a single-family travel insurance plan –for the same price

If your kids don’t meet the above requirements, you can purchase single plans for each one. When you get a quote, be sure to list all dependents who will be travelling with you on the plan to ensure coverage for your whole family.

How can World Nomads Travel Insurance cover me and my family?

World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance plans, designed for travellers by travellers, to help you travel confidently on your next family vacation. Our four plans offer differing levels of coverage, so it’s important you compare plans and pick the best one for your trip.

Are dependents covered up to the same policy limits?

Yes; as long as you’ve added them to your policy when purchasing, your kids are covered up to the same limits even though they are travelling as dependents. The benefit limits shown on the family plan are the maximum amount payable per person.

Top safety tips we recommend for your family trip

  • Have a ‘who to contact first’ plan. Write down your hotel number, your emergency contact back home, local emergency number, and your travel insurance emergency line and plan number.Keep it on paper and in your phone in case batteries run low.
  • Set a family meeting point. For each place you visit (such as an airport, museum, beach, etc.) choose a specific spot if someone becomes separated.Make it precise, like ‘under the main departures board', not ‘near security’.
  • Share live location: Use Find My iPhone, WhatsApp, Google Location Sharing, etc. to keep track of every family member in real time. Turn on battery-saver mode during long days out. If your child is too young for a mobile phone, consider putting an AirTag on their shoe or backpack.
  • Separate important cards and cash. Don’t keep all bank cards, cash and passports in the same bag. Each adult (or responsible teen) carries one payment card and a copy of their ID.
  • Create digital backups of documents like your passports, visas, travel insurance details and prescriptions. Save them in a password-protected cloud folder.
  • Check with the Public Health Agency of Canada to see if they have issued any travel health notices for your family trip destination.
  • Register with  Canadians Abroad to stay updated on emergency situations.

From coral reefs in the Caribbean to one of the dozens of World War 2 shipwrecks found off the coast of Malta, there’s no shortage of divine dive sites around the world. Why should I consider travel insurance for my scuba diving trip?

You can choose a travel insurance plan that best meets your needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently – whether you're diving among the abundant marine life in the Florida Keys or alongside the Great Wall of China (yes, that’s possible!).

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my scuba diving trip?

World Nomads offers four plans for Canadian residents – the Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual Multi-Trip – each with different levels of coverage. All plans cover scuba diving up to 30 metres. You also have the optional to upgrade your coverage and pay an additional premium if you intend to dive deeper than that.

When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list scuba diving, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. The main purpose of your trip may be diving, but you may also be doing other fun things like kayaking or sailing. There’s over 250 other sports, activities and experiences that may be covered. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.

Recreational scuba diving and shark cage diving up to 30 metres are considered Level 1 activities and are automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list them when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like scuba diving or cavern diving up to 40 metres, or working as a scuba diving instructor or guide. If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

What may not be covered when scuba diving?

  • Scuba diving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Dives that are deeper (over 40 metres) than your adventure travel insurance coverage allows
  • Scuba diving without the proper certification (like PADI or NAUI), unless it is a discovery course with an instructor
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items
  • Travelling within your home province
  • Diving if your doctor has advised against it
  • Commercial scuba diving

Top safety tips we recommend for your scuba diving trip

  • Research your dive company: Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment.
  • Don’t dive without proper certifications:Make sure you’ve gone through the proper coursework through PADI or NAUI based upon the type of dive you’ll be doing. If you don’t have the proper certification for your dive, you won’t be covered by your travel insurance for scuba diving.
  • Check (and double check) your scuba gear before getting in the water: Make sure everything is working properly and if you’re unsure about anything, let your guide know.
  • Don’t dive alone or swim off on your own: Even if you see something cool underwater, don’t go check it out alone – you and your dive buddy need to stay together. Always know where your guide and buddy are at all times.
  • Keep an eye on your air gauge: Monitor this closely so you can plan your return to the surface accordingly. Always make sure you have enough air to complete your dive.
  • Ascend slowly and safely: Coming back to the surface too quickly can cause serious problems. Make sure to do safety stops at the appropriate depths.
  • Store a copy of your scuba diving travel insurance coverage in a dry bag: If an accident happens, you’ll want that handy – and dry. Make sure you have the phone number for the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team easily accessible, as well as your policy number. You may want to save that in your phone as well.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Is scuba diving covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, World Nomads offers travel insurance coverage for scuba diving, but make sure you list this as an activity you’ll be participating in when you purchase your policy. Recreational scuba diving and shark cage diving up to 30 metres are considered Level 1 activities and are automatically covered but will still need to be listed when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like scuba diving or cavern diving up to 40 metres or working as a scuba diving instructor or guide. If you are doing something else on your trip and aren’t sure if it’s covered, you should contact us to make sure.

  • Can I get coverage after my trip starts?

Yes. If your trip has already started, World Nomads can still offer you coverage. You can buy a plan online anytime, from almost anywhere in the world. If you buy a plan after departing from your home province, you won’t be covered for any loss or expense related to any injury or sickness that occurs in the 48-hour period after your departure date. Your departure date will be 12:01am local time on the date that you are originally scheduled to start your trip as shown on your policy certificate.

  • What should I do if I get hurt while scuba diving?

If you have travel insurance coverage for scuba diving and unexpectedly get hurt, you must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team and they can help direct you to nearby medical facilities. They can also translate for you if you’re travellinng outside of Canada and your medical team doesn’t speak French or English. Make sure you keep all documentation including doctor reports, invoices, etc. You’ll need those things if you plan to make a claim.

  • Does World Nomads Travel Insurance cover other activities during my trip?

Yes, with your adventure travel insurance benefits, you may be covered for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences. Things like hiking, biking, rocking climbing, and camping may all be covered. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you’re participating in an activity and not sure if it’s covered, you can contact us and ask.

  • What happens if my bags are delayed?

When you purchase travel insurance for diving, baggage coverage is also included. If your checked-in bags are delayed by your common carrier for 12 hours or more on the way to your destination, your plan may reimburse you for necessary personal effects such as essential items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited.

What benefits are covered with hiking and trekking travel insurance?

World Nomads offers coverage (up to the plan maximum benefit limit) for:

 What may not be covered?

  •  Any alcohol related sickness, death or injury or the abuse of medication, drugs, alcohol or any other toxic substance.
  •  Travel within your home province
  •  Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  •  Wear and tear from everyday use of sporting equipment. Gear that is in use is not covered.
  •  Hiking or trekking over 6,000 metres.

Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Plan provides little, if any emergency medical coverage once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels outside of your home province, too.

Top tips for your hiking or trekking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be prepared: we recommend that you check the weather, check your equipment, and if you’re going guided, confirm that you’re using an accredited tour operator.
  • Stay healthy: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. It’s best to be sure you are physically capable of it. Consider asking a doctor before you leave about altitude medication or other helpful prescriptions you can take with you.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases and a loss or theft report. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you need to make a claim.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What is the difference between hiking, trekking and mountaineering for travel insurance purposes?

Hiking and trekking are often thought of as the same thing, however hiking is generally considered short, easier walks, whereas trekking involves longer, more challenging journeys. Under World Nomads travel insurance plans, hiking and trekking activities are offered under the same adventure activity level. Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so you may need to purchase an optional upgrade for travel insurance plans like those from World Nomads to have coverage for these activities, which may vary depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. World Nomads offers four travel insurance plans with different coverage limits. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.

  • Why should I consider travel insurance coverage for hiking and trekking?

If you suffer an injury during your trekking or hiking adventure, you may need emergency medical assistance. Hiking and trekking adventures vary in intensity—and elevation. That’s why World Nomads offers four different plans, each with the opportunity to add optional adventure activity coverage for higher risk activities. With elevation-based options, you can choose a plan that fits your route, your style, and your ambition.

Adventure Sports Coverage for World Nomads Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual Multi-Trip Plans:

    • Hiking or trekking up to 3,000 metres – Level 1
    • Hiking or trekking up to 6,000 metres – Level 3
    • Hiking or trekking over 6,000 metres – No coverage

Activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3 require an extra premium to be paid for coverage to apply.

  • When should I purchase travel insurance if I’m planning an adventure?

Many travellers choose to buy travel insurance soon after booking to protect their trip investment with a plan that includes pre-trip benefits like Trip Cancellation coverage. Trip Cancellation coverage may reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason (like unexpected sickness or injury). World Nomads also now offers a Cancel for Any Reason (“CFAR”) optional upgrade. This optional upgrade can only be purchased with our Explorer Plan and Epic Plan (up to 50% CFAR benefit. Maximum benefit limits apply). If you purchase your Explorer or Epic plan within 15 days of making your initial trip payment or trip deposit (like booking a nonrefundable hotel or buying a plane ticket), you also can add optional ‘cancel for any reason’ coverage. After 15 days, you will not be able to. Simply put, planning ahead means more protection. However, if you’re already on your trip, you can still purchase a World Nomads travel insurance plan (certain waiting periods may apply).

  • Would hiking gear and equipment be covered?

Yes, your hiking gear and equipment may be covered under the baggage and personal effects coverage included in our plans if it's lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged during your trip. Maximum benefit limits vary by plan, so be sure to review which plan is best for your needs —especially if you're carrying high-value items like trekking poles, boots, or GPS devices. Note: coverage does not include wear and tear or gear damaged during use. Additional terms and conditions apply.

  • Does my plan include emergency evacuation coverage?

Yes, World Nomads travel insurance plans include emergency medical evacuation coverage if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're injured in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains coverage may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Medical evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.

  • Is there a maximum altitude limit for hiking or trekking trips under World Nomads travel insurance plans?

Yes, there are two different altitude maximums.

Elevation coverage under our Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual Multi-Trip Plans:

    • Adventure activity coverage – Level 1 - hiking or trekking up to 3,000 metres
    • Adventure activity coverage – Level 3 - hiking or trekking up to 6,000 metres
    • There is no coverage for hiking or trekking over 6,000 metres

An additional adventure activity coverage upgrade is required for all level 2 and level 3 activities.

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning on exploring the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t fret. You have a couple of options that may ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Purchase a new plan: If your plan has expired, you may be able to purchase a new one while you’re still traveling. Just note your coverage takes effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan and will not cover any events that happened prior to the new plan’s start date. Your plan document will have full details to understand what’s covered, limits and exclusions.
  • Consider the optional “Cancel for Any Reason” benefit: It’s unfortunate, but it happens: You plan a big trip months in advance, only to have something come up that is now stopping you from going. The trip cancellation benefit may help recover your travel expenses (up to the maximum benefit amount), and may include unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel arrangements you paid for in advance, but a certain qualifying event would have to happen (sickness, natural disaster, etc.) But what if your dog is sick or you break up with your partner or you get a new job? Instead of losing all the money you put down, consider adding on the “cancel for any reason” benefit to your Explorer or Epic travel protection plan during the time-sensitive period to protect those long trips (and big investments!). Not available in NY, additional cost and terms apply.
20251106-4950803. This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your plan document for a full list of maximums, terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your state specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. Exclusion applies to Adventure or Extreme Activities.
