Unfortunately we can’t help with that punctured tyre but if you’ve seriously hurt yourself World Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer plans can offer coverage for unforeseen medical costs on your next mountain biking adventure overseas. Both our plans offer optional upgrades so if you plan on taking lifts for some gripping descents, you must upgrade to the activity level that suits your needs at the time you purchase your policy.
We understand that unexpected accidents and illnesses may strike at any moment, that’s why the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team is here to help you navigate any issues you may have if you end up in hospital. If you’re admitted to hospital, you (or someone else) must notify our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team as soon as reasonably possible. Your medical expenses can be paid directly to the hospital, where possible, once cover is confirmed. For more information on what to do if you need emergency assistance while overseas check out our Overseas Medical Treatment and Hospitalisation Help Centre article.
Travel insurance tip: Irish travellers, if you require any medical treatment during your trip while outside of Ireland (and as soon as your medically able to do so) you’ll need to contact your private medical insurance (PMI) provider (if applicable) and follow their emergency medical procedures and claims procedures. Where your PMI provider cannot provide assistance, get in touch with our 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible before incurring medical costs, and also please provide us with details of your PMI provider to help us coordinate your care. For more information on what to do please refer to Section 8 Medical Sections of Cover, Important Information, in your Policy Wording.
You can also claim for your non-refundable costs of cancelling your trip if you or your travel buddy suddenly gets sick or hurt before you go on your trip. We also offer cover if you’re left empty-handed when the airline loses your baggage; or if a storm affects your connecting flight and puts the brakes on your travel plans (Explorer Plan only).
Having travel insurance can help take some of the stress out if you end up in hospital with unexpected medical costs from a broken leg to some bangs and scrapes. Importantly travel insurance offers coverage for those ‘worst possible case’ scenarios when you need to be repatriated to Ireland to recover.
An upgrade for certain activities and sports may be required and terms and conditions apply for each activity. Check out our activities article for details or contact us if you have questions.

Embrace the thrill of the trails! Whether you're a weekend warrior, or a downhill daredevil, having travel insurance can keep you focused on the fun, not the what-ifs. From the rugged peaks of Scotland to the challenging trails of the Alps…there’s so many mountains waiting to be climbed on two wheels! But before you hit the paths less pedalled, check out our tips to ensure you're fully geared up with the right cover.
Accidents and Injuries: the rugged nature of mountain biking increases the risk of falls and injuries. Whether it's a minor scrape or a more serious injury requiring hospitalisation, travel insurance can cover medical expenses and emergency treatments.
Remote Locations: many of the best trails are off the beaten path. If you get injured in a remote area, emergency evacuation can be costly. Travel insurance can cover the expense of medically necessary evacuations, ensuring you receive the best possible care swiftly.
Damage or Loss of Gear: mountain biking gear is an investment. If your essential equipment is damaged or stolen during your trip, travel insurance can help cover these costs, allowing you to replace or repair your gear without significant financial burden. World Nomads provides baggage protection for lost, stolen, or damaged items of up to £3,000 with the Explorer Plan and £1,500 with the Standard Plan. For high-value gear, you may want to consider adding them as high value items. You can increase the level of cover of item up to £750 on the Explorer plan and £400 on the Standard. The maximum limit for all high value items is £2,250 on the Explorer and £1,200 on the Standard. An additional premium is required when adding high value items.
As long as you’re not doing anything silly, like riding without a helmet or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, World Nomads offers cover for mountain biking (on and off road, cross country, or downhill). We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific mountain biking plans. Here are some of the things our plans over:
It’s not nice to think about, but if you suffer an injury or accident on your ride, our emergency medical assistance coverage may protect you for emergencies that require:
If you need medical treatment, it’s essential that you get in touch with our Emergency Medical Assistance team as soon as possible so they can support you.
You might be riding in a remote area, far from medical assistance, so our policies include coverage if you need to be evacuated to a medical facility.
Having a medical emergency in a foreign country can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy means you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team. Our Medical Emergency Assistance team can help with a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re travelling 365 days a year.
If your ride is cancelled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your unused/additional travel expenses. With the Explorer plan this can include if your destination is affected by a natural catastrophe.
Note: There are specific terms and conditions, limits and exclusions that apply to mountain biking, so be sure to check the exclusions section of this article, and also check your policy wording carefully. If you’re not sure whether something is covered, contact us.
While we can offer coverage for mountain biking, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:
Check out our handy guides and insider travel tips on the best places to go mountain biking:
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

US Residents can protect their working vacations with travel insurance

Because of flexible work and school schedules, more travelers are opting to take flexcations – extended stays away from home that are a mixture of leisure and work travel. Digital nomads have the flexibility to travel to some of the world’s most intriguing places, but no matter where you’re headed, it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected when traveling. For example, if you’re planning to spend your weekdays working in Rome and your weekends tasting your way through Tuscany, a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage for Italy can help protect your trip. Your plan may help with everything from stolen bags to unexpected medical expenses.
The 9-5 grind of work isn’t so bad if you have your toes in the sand and a fruity drink by your side. These days, you can work from just about anywhere in the world with a strong Wi-Fi connection – including some of the most scenic tropical landscapes like the Caribbean and Costa Rica. But what happens if you get hurt while scuba diving or snorkeling on your lunch break? A travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a way to travel confidently while you’re on a flexcation.
The purpose of a flexcation is to be able to fully enjoy the destination where you’re traveling, and you’ll hopefully be experiencing new cultures and activities while you’re there. But when you’re working and studying remotely and away from home, unexpected situations can happen – and that’s why we’ve designed our travel protection plans to include travel insurance coverage for flexcations. We also offer coverage for losses related to more than 250 sports, activities and experiences.

Terms, conditions, and limitations apply to all mentioned coverages.
All plans include travel insurance coverage for your flexcation trip, as well as several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your trip. These include delayed or lost baggage tracking and delivery, portable health records and pre-departure telehealth services.
World Nomads offers four plans for U.S. residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. A flexcation isn’t supposed to be all work and no play, and depending on where you’re headed, you may want to enjoy a variety of other activities such as hiking, snorkeling, or skiing. That’s totally fine, because you may be covered for 250+ sports, activities and experiences.
It’s important to note that the maximum trip length for a single trip plan (the Standard, Explorer or Epic) is 180 days. It’s 45 days per trip for an Annual Plan.
NOMADS TIP: For even more trip cancellation flexibility, check out the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ benefit. It can be added to Explorer and Epic plans. Available at an additional cost for U.S. residents, except in New York.

So what happens if your boss told you that you could work remotely and be a digital nomad, but then changes his mind as soon as you land in Europe? If you have to go home because your employer won’t let you work remotely anymore, your travel insurance coverage for your trip to Europe won’t reimburse you for the costs of your trip. While many things are covered by travel insurance and non-insurance services, there are some things that aren’t – including your boss changing his mind. (Although it’s totally not cool.)
Some other things that aren’t covered include:
From our own experiences of being digital nomads, we’ve worked in some really interesting destinations around the world. It's never been easier to unplug and take off now that you can work and study remotely. But travel glitches can arrive in all shapes and sizes, and it helps to prepare as much as you can. Here are a few tips that you may find helpful when planning your next flexcation.
Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for flexcations. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team
Our plans are designed to provide coverage for your baggage and personal effects, including electronic devices and personal computers. While our plans may provide coverage for your personal electronics that you own and take with you on your trip, we will not cover your professional electronics that is owned by someone other than yourself or used for professional purposes.
If your trip is canceled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your travel expenses (up to the maximum benefit amount), and this may include unused, pre-paid, non-refundable tours that you paid for in advance. If you get hurt when on a flexcation and require medical assistance, emergency medical coverage may come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You may also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags.
Yes. If your trip has already started, World Nomads can still offer you coverage. You can buy a plan that includes travel insurance coverage and non-insurance services for flexcations online anytime, from anywhere in the world. World Nomads Travel Insurance for U.S. residents take effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan. If you’re already traveling and want to get coverage, you’ll need to buy your insurance at least the day before you need coverage.
Yes, some of the best places to take a flexcation are outside of the US and World Nomads doesn’t want to limit your fun. For example, if you have a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage for your trip to France, you could have the opportunity to be a digital nomad in Paris. If you have travel insurance coverage for your trip to Japan, you could work remotely and spend your free time skiing in the Japanese Alps. When you get a quote for a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage for flexcation trips, you’ll need to input where you’ll be traveling.
World Nomads plans include medical expense coverage in the event you suffer a medical emergency while on your trip. Travel insurance won’t pay for everyday or preventative care, such as allergy medications or routine check-ups. If you have an unexpected medical emergency though, World Nomads Travel Insurance may help with things such as hospital stays, prescription medications, and x-rays (subject to approval.)
If you get hurt while you’re on a flexcation, contact local authorities as soon as you’re able to do so for immediate attention. World Nomads Travel Insurance may help cover the cost of medical treatment, hospital stays, or even emergency medical evacuation if needed (subject to approval.) Access to a 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance team is also included for support anytime, anywhere when you purchase a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage for flexcation trips.
Yes, when you purchase travel insurance and non-insurance services for flexcations, you could be covered for 250+ sports, activities and experiences. We know you’ll be doing more than working and studying, and that’s what makes it fun to be a digital nomad. Things like hiking and biking may be covered. You can review the list of activities, but if you’re participating in an activity and not sure if it’s covered, you can contact us and ask.
Trip cancellation coverage is offered by all plans offered by World Nomads, and you may be reimbursed for pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason. U.S. residents (except those that live in New York) also have the ability to add additional cancel for any reason coverage when certain World Nomads plans are purchased.
There are actually some pretty amazing places where you can work remotely here in the United States (and you can get a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage for the US as long as you’re traveling more than 100 miles away from your home.) We get it. You want to escape from the hustle and unwind under a blanket of stars. From lush forests to the endless horizons of Australia’s Outback, a camping trip offers every manner of revival. As exciting as planning your outdoor adventure is, travelling far from home and urban comforts also comes with risks.
World Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer plans have been designed to offer cover for sudden and unforeseen events on your next camping trip such as being left empty handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your hiking gear in it), if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or unwell or if severe weather washes away your travel plans.
Nothing soothes the soul like the crackle of a campfire. As passionate campers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover all types of camping adventures:

What’s a camping trip without some action?
Both our plans offer cover for activities such as bungee jumping, stand up paddle boarding/surfing and scuba diving up to 30 metres. While there are many activities available on the Standard plan, those feeling extra adventurous can upgrade to the Explorer Plan which offers higher benefits and a broader range of activities and sports pursuits. It costs more but it may better suit your needs as it offers upgrades for activities such as camping and hiking up to 6,000 metres, or mountaineering (with ropes, picks or specialist climbing equipment) up to 6,000 metres.
Travel insurance tip: Your cover will depend on the activity(ies) you chose at the time of policy purchase and terms and conditions apply for each activity. Level 1 sports and activities are automatically covered on the Standard and Explorer Plans. You can upgrade your cover for a range of other activities, experiences and manual work if you select the activities (listed as Level 2, 3 and 4) but you will need an upgrade to the Explorer Plan.
