What you should consider when buying travel insurance for a trip to Croatia.
As featured in:
Always exciting and beautiful, Croatia has enjoyed a surge in tourism in the last decade, especially in the summer. Croatia has incredible national parks, such as those in Krka and Northern Velebit, a vibrant capital, Zagreb, and picturesque beaches on the Adriatic coast.
While you dream of exploring the popular TV show locations in Dubrovnik, take in the bustling restaurants and bars of Split, or delve into the history and museums located in Zadar, you may want to consider some travel insurance for any unexpected events that may occur.
It can throw a spanner in the works to arrive in Zagreb and find yourself alone at the baggage carousel, watching it go around waiting for your bags to appear. If you're bags get lost in transit, or are stolen or damaged along the way, baggage insurance may be able to help.
Note: all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.
World Nomads may offer cover (up to the policy limits) for loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items depending on your specific situation, see below:
You may also need to take depreciation into account and some policies, depending on your country of residence and the plan you purchase, may also have an excess applicable to any claim made. Details on how depreciation works can be found in your policy.
When traveling to Croatia, travel insurance may help if you become unwell or have an accident, especially in these uncertain times of traveling and dealing with Coronavirus (COVID-19). You don’t want to be left out of pocket if you have to visit a local doctor, go to hospital, need an urgent trip to the dentist, or even worse, have to be repatriated back to your country of residence.
With Coronavirus causing travel disruptions globally, it’s also important that you follow any government guidelines while in Croatia. It’s always a good idea to wear a face mask when visiting any of Croatia’s popular hotspots.
The level of cover you’ll have for any Coronavirus-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. Check out our Travel Insurance cover for Coronavirus article which goes into more detail on all the benefits, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.
Dealing with a medical emergency can be frightening and confusing, but you don’t have to go through this experience on your own. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can direct you to nearby appropriate care, talk to doctors, need help with a foreign language, help out with admin and arrange for payment of expenses if necessary. If your situation is life-threatening, seek medical help immediately and let us know when you can so we can help with medical assistance and keeping your friends and family informed.
If you’re looking to get your adrenaline levels up and you go hiking, backpacking, or rock climbing in one of Croatia’s eight incredible National parks, World Nomads offers travel insurance cover for 150+ activities and sports. Please check your Policy Wording when choosing any activities or sports as you may need to upgrade the policy and sporting level to ensure you’re covered for everything you plan to do.
Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, anytime, from anywhere.
If you’re travelling to any EU countries, you need to be aware of a new system being rolled out. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is coming to 29 European countries from October 12, 2025.
The EES is a new automated border control system designed to modernize and enhance how travellers enter and leave the Schengen Area.
Countries that are taking part in the EES are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) travel authorisation system has been postponed to late 2026.
Non-EU citizens planning a holiday to Europe will need to check if they need a ETIAS travel permit before they go.
The ETIAS will apply to travellers from 59 visa-exempt countries and territories, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

About World Nomads
World Nomads polices are designed by travelers for travelers to provide simple and flexible travel insurance. Featuring coverage for more than 150 activities, you can get a quote, claim, or extend your policy online at www.worldnomads.com. All the information we provide about travel insurance is a brief summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the travel insurance plans described. Coverage may not be available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage.
Travel insurance tip 1: never leave your bags and valuables out of your sight and reach. Try and carry your portable electronic devices (tablets, laptops, photographic and video equipment, mobile phones and other hand-held devices), jewelry, specified high- value items, travel documents, cash and credit cards with you at all times. If you can’t, then leave them in a secure place such as a locked safe. Remember that if you buy anything, before or during your trip, to keep all receipts.
Traveler Tip 2: undetonated landmines from the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s are littered throughout some mountains and woodland areas, so it’s best to stick to the commonly used hiking trails.

Whatever your plans are when jetting off to Germany, World Nomads travel insurance may be able to help keep your plans on track when you need it the most - you might be planning a family camping trip in East Bavaria, going solo on a summer trip to Rugen Island, or maybe mountain biking with your travel buddy at Bikepark Winterberg.
With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance when you book your trip from home or while you're already traveling around Germany.
World Nomads offers cover for many activities ranging from mountain biking to skiing, surfing, kayaking and scuba diving. All our plans offer cover for:
Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, even while traveling.
Note: all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.
World Nomads can support you on a variety of outdoor adventures, with coverage for more than 150 activities and sports. You may need to compare the Standard or Explorer plans to see which activity levels are covered on each plan. Depending on your country of residence, you may need to add activities to your policy for an additional fee.
Your plan may also have conditions of coverage. For example, you may be required to wear safety equipment, book a tour with a licensed tour operator, or stay within certain parameters of your sport: your treks may only be covered up to a certain elevation, or your scuba dives only to a certain depth.
Please check your policy for any exclusions, such as search and rescue missions and professional sports.
Germany is one of Europe’s most-visited adventure travel destinations and with that comes the possibility that you may be injured or worse. Your travel insurance can back you up if you’re injured or fall ill and need urgent medical assistance.
Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can get you help on the ground when you’re lost, injured or sick, whether you need an ambulance transfer, a prescription medication or a hospital that can treat your condition.
Get in touch with the team before undergoing any medical treatment; you may need pre-authorization before undergoing medical procedures or ordering an evacuation. It’s also important that you look at the exclusions section of your policy; our plans don’t cover pre-existing medical conditions or preventative care.
Road conditions can be tricky in Germany, especially if you’re planning a long road trip on the Autobahn. For example, Germany’s legendary Fairy Tale Route ("Märchenstraße") stretches for 600 kms from the town of Hanau in Central Germany all the way up to Bremen on the North Sea.
Some of our plans have damage collision waiver coverage for rental cars, depending on your country of residence, and whether you’ve chosen a Standard or Explorer plan. If you get into an accident, be sure to always get a report from the authorities, which you’ll need for your claim.
In a crisis, our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 for referrals or locations of nearby hospitals, medical providers or pharmacies. The team can also help during an emergency if you’re having trouble with a language you don’t know.
While Germany is considered a safe tourist destination, you should always be aware that petty thieves and pickpockets are attracted to big tourist hotpots. When in crowded areas in any German city always maintain a sense of awareness of your surroundings.
It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. If you're after travel insurance cover for tech gear or need extra cover just in case your bags are delayed or stolen then World Nomads has options for you to keep those prized possessions insured.
Before you pack your bags, read our articles on adventure in Germany, how to survive German Autobahn’s and bikes like a Pro, and our latest travel safety alerts for Germany.

It was my final day in Riga, Latvia. In my small bag I keep all my valuables, because hostels can't always be reliable with safekeeping. It contained my new GoPro, Iphone, digital camera, laptop and hard drive, plus my emergency money (200 euros). I planned on using my cameras and computer for editing later that afternoon. The coast was amazing and, as it got late, I decided to take the train back to Riga city. As I was getting off the train, down the vertical steep steps, I had my bag snatched off my shoulder. In seconds, the doors closed and the train pulled off. Telling authorities on the platforms immediately, they could not assist and referred me straight to the police. Feeling helpless, I went to the police where I was kept for hours, because of English barriers and translations of documents. I walked out just after midnight with my report. A day trip I won't forget soon.

Strapped into your harness, ready to ascend the craggy cliffs of El Capitan or perhaps the limestone routes in Thailand? UK climbers are no strangers to adventure, scaling heights that test every muscle and nerve. But while you're plotting your route up these epic rock faces, don't overlook the essentials for those less thrilling parts of your climbing journey – one of those items could just be travel insurance. Whether it's a twisted ankle or a weather-worn delay, World Nomads could turn out to be the safety rope you never anticipated needing!
World Nomads offers coverage across two insurance policies (Standard and Explorer) for four different rock climbing activities:
If a climb does go wrong, here are some of the ways travel insurance could help:
Make sure that you've selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. Get a quote online anytime, anywhere.
Travellers tip: if your climbing gear is stolen, it’s imperative you get on the front foot by reporting it to the authorities and obtaining a police report. Always keep copies or originals of any receipts in case you need to make a claim for stolen gear and valuables.
We all know that British adrenaline-seekers are daring, but most know there are always risks. Rock climbers may be confronted with falling rocks, the weather may change suddenly, and gear failure can cause severe injury.
Having travel insurance can also help take some of the stress out if you end up in hospital with unexpected medical costs from a broken leg or bangs and scrapes. Importantly travel insurance offers coverage for those ‘worst possible case' scenarios when you need to be repatriated to the UK to recover.
Please be aware that if you need to make a claim at any point of your trip you must prove you acted responsibly, and used the recommended safety clothing and equipment. Special exclusions and conditions apply – see the Policy Wording for details.
Travel insurance tip: check what vaccinations you need to get before travelling to any foreign country. You can ask your doctor about this. You should also make sure you pack and use any necessary insect repellents, as many diseases can be contracted by mosquitoes, tsetse flies, lice, and other insect bites.
Gear up for your next rock-climbing adventure by paying close attention to both the thrill and the risks involved. Whether you're scaling indoor walls or venturing onto remote crags, here’s a few tips for a safe and successful climb:
Travellers tip: make sure you refer to your policy wording before leaving, as we don’t offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.
While there are several situations we can cover you for, there are also some we just won't cover. These include, but are not limited to:
Rock climbing comes with its fair share of gnarly moments, which is why it’s imperative you deep dive into your insurance inclusions (and exclusions) before hitting the rockface. Climbing the walls may be a popular global colloquialism, but for Irish travellers the phrase is often exactly as it sounds. Whether eyeing off a challenging indoor facility or preparing to descend Morocco's Todra Gorge, research is imperative. Make sure you get a handle on the conditions, pack a map and some courage. Oh, and don't forget insurance, as fun as climbing is, it can be risky.
Whether harnessing a new skill or climbing like a boss, World Nomads has cover (up to the policy limits) for the following:
We all know that Irish adrenaline seekers are daring, but most know there are always risks. Rock climbers may be confronted with falling rocks, the weather may change suddenly, and gear failure can cause severe injury.
Travel insurance can help take some of the stress out if you end up in hospital with unexpected medical costs from a broken leg or bangs and scrapes. Importantly travel insurance offers coverage for those ‘worst possible case’ scenarios when you need to be repatriated to Ireland to recover.
Please be aware that if you need to make a claim at any point of your trip you must prove you acted responsibly, used the recommended safety clothing and equipment, and were guided by a professional, qualified, and licensed guide, instructor or operator. Special exclusions and conditions apply - see the Policy Wording for details.
Preparation and planning are key when activities such as rock climbing are in the mix. Whether tackling an indoor course or if you prefer to belay down a rocky mountain in Canada, it's important that you’re up to the challenge and well versed on the conditions, have the level of fitness required, and that you don’t have any niggling injuries that may be aggravated while climbing.
You may want to consider what you'd do if your bag or climbing gear are stolen, your connection is delayed, and you miss a climb you’d already booked and paid for months ago. Even worse, you could injure yourself a week out from your trip and need to cancel. Travel insurance can lessen the blows, and depending on your circumstances, we've got cover to suit you.
The following tips can help you maximise your safety and validity of cover.
World Nomads offers two levels of cover, Standard and Explorer, and what is right for one person may not suit another. When it comes to rock climbing, a Level 2 activity(except rock climbing indoor, which is Level 1), consider our higher level of cover (Explorer) for an additional premium.
Our Standard Plan includes a range of benefits including overseas medical, baggage cover, trip cancellation and certain adventure activities, while the Explorer Plan has all the benefits of the Standard Plan and a few extras, but it’s more expensive. Choose the right cover for you and do note that once cover is purchased for your activities it can’t be changed.
While there are several situations we can cover you for, there are also some we are unable to cover. These include, but are not limited to:

If you feel like you need a bigger adventure that delivers more thrills than lying on a beach sunbaking, then rock climbing could be just what you need on your next trip.
Whether you're eyeing off a top indoor facility in Europe or preparing to tackle Spain's Costa Blanca, it pays to check the weather and travel restrictions, pack a map along with some courage and consider travel insurance – as fun as climbing is, it requires a lot of planning as the risks are evident.
No matter your skill level – whether you're a pro determined to conquer your next peak or an amateur with the full gamut of climbing options in your sights – World Nomads may offer cover for the following (up to the policy limits):
Safety is key to conquering new heights, no matter the destination – Europe, Australia, the United States, and every rugged landscape in between.
As daring as climbers are, falling rocks, unexpected changes in weather conditions, and equipment malfunctions are just some of the challenges faced.
Our Standard and Explorer plans are designed to provide cover for sudden and unforeseen events on your next adventure, such as being left empty-handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your gear in it), if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or unwell or if severe weather interrupts your plans.
As a climber, there are different travel insurance requirements depending on the type of activity you are planning to undertake. While bouldering is automatically covered (special exclusions apply), when it comes to indoor and outdoor rock climbing and mountaineering increased cover is required, which means an additional premium. In some cases, there are height limits, and soloing is prohibited.
As a rock climber, you'll often find yourself in locations that will be only accessible by helicopter. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected, if you found yourself in an emergency and need to be evacuated or transported to the nearest medical facility or back to your Country of Residence, your helicopter rescue or air ambulance may be covered by travel insurance.
Please be aware of the following:
Travel insurance tip: your cover will depend on the activities you chose at the time of policy purchase and terms and conditions apply for each activity. Level 1 sports and activities are automatically covered on the Standard and Explorer plans. You can upgrade your cover for a range of other activities, experiences, and manual work if you select the activities (listed as Level 2, 3 and 4) but you'll need an upgrade to the Explorer Plan.
Preparation and planning are key when activities such as rock climbing are involved. Whichever peak or wall you have in your sights it pays to be versed on the conditions, have the level of fitness required, and ensure that you don't have any pre-existing medical condition that could be aggravated and cause further injury.
While we don't like to think about what can go wrong, these scenarios are often all too common:

The only thing better than exploring a new country? Exploring two, three, four, or even more, new countries. If you’re going to be traveling to multiple destinations, you may want to consider protecting yourself with travel insurance.
Sure, more countries mean more opportunities for fun. But they also mean more unfamiliar cultures to encounter, safety issues to research, and transit systems to navigate.
World Nomads offers cover for multiple destinations under one policy. Trips to many different countries are a fantastic way to explore multiple countries, regions and cities all in one trip. With World Nomads travel insurance, you can be covered for multiple destinations under one policy.
For example, if you are planning on traveling to Europe and plan to visit multiple European countries, but you’re unsure if every destination is covered, it’s worth giving our customer service agents a call. They’re happy to answer any questions, so you can go back to planning your itinerary.
Note: Depending on your country of residence and level of cover, there may be a limit on how long each individual trip you take can be. Please check your policy wording for full details and always check the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions in the policy wording, so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you're not sure if something is covered get in touch.
You spent months planning your globetrotting tour through South America, and then the worst happens. After you pre-paid for your flights, hotels, and tango dancing lessons, your trip gets canceled. It feels like all your advance planning – and advance paying – was for nothing.
Thankfully, you had the foresight to purchase travel insurance. When you’re visiting several destinations, your pre-paid expenses can add up. But, if you buy a policy with World Nomads, your trip cancellation coverage could reimburse you in the event of a globetrotter’s worst nightmare… such as an airline strike on your departure date, or you falling ill the day you were supposed to fly out. (Coverage depends on your Country of Residence and the plan you select, the Standard or the Explorer.)
Travel insurance tip: check your policy for the maximum benefit amount for trip cancellation. You may want the limit to cover 100% of your pre-paid trip costs. You should also scan your policy for the ‘covered reasons’ under trip cancellation. Only the events specified are reimbursable under your plan.
You’ll need your passport and ID to accomplish the multiple destination holiday you’ve been planning. Every time you cross a border, board a plane, or check into hotels – it’s a must.
If your passport is lost or stolen on your multiple destination journey, World Nomads is here to help. With a policy, you can reach out to our Emergency Assistance Team, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The team will always be there to assist you with contacting embassies in case of a lost passport or other emergencies.
Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you select (Standard or Explorer), you could be covered for the replacement of your passport and for the inconveniences of having your passport stolen such a trip delay. Check your individual policy for exact benefits.
Theft
Pickpocketing is a global scourge, especially in busy tourist areas such as train stations and airports. With a World Nomads policy, your baggage and personal effects are covered up to the maximum benefit amount… handy when you find yourself in need of more than just the clothes on your back.
Travel insurance tip: when you file a claim, you’ll need to show proof of ownership of your stolen belongings. It can help to take snapshots of the contents of your suitcase before your trip and gather any receipts for valuable items.
Delays
Because travelers visiting multiple destinations often find that they are hopping aboard more planes, trains, and automobiles than a single-destination traveler, their chances of experiencing a baggage delay may be higher. In those instances, having a World Nomads policy packed away means you may have coverage for any incidentals – a change of clothes, for example – depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you select.
Travel insurance tip: Depending on your Country of Residence the 24/7 EA team may help assist you with locating your belongings wherever they may be. If your suitcase doesn’t arrive on the carousel, give us a call and we can assist you in finding your bags.
24/7 Emergency Assistance Team
Accidents happen, no matter where you are on the globe. But, if you are heading to multiple countries, you could wind up needing to navigate hospitals and health care systems in different languages… some of which you may not speak.
Depending on your country of residence your World Nomads policy may help you rest a little easier, knowing that we have translation service professionals ready to assist with translations (and finding the nearest quality hospital).
If you’ve had a major accident and need emergency evacuation, you’ll be grateful to know that you can get support with your medical bills. But, in the event the worst happens, you will have enough to worry about. Why add how you’ll pay for emergency evacuation expenses to the mix?
When you have a World Nomads policy, you can, metaphorically, at least, pop a chill pill, and can relax until you’re on the mend. Wherever you are on your itinerary, you can rest assured that you’ll be in a quality hospital, whether that be across town or back in your home country.
Travel insurance tip: you’ll need permission from us for an evacuation, and reasonable exclusions apply (such as if you break your leg while bike packing while drunk… that’s on you).
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, customer service is here to help.
Cover for any specific country will vary depending on the amount of time you spend there, for example, you may only be transiting through a country and only spending time at the airport for your stopover before continuing your trip. When you buy a policy, you must select all the countries where you’ll spend at least 72 hours of your trip. Your chosen countries will be shown on your Certificate of Insurance. Please be aware that our cost to insure travelers is higher for some countries and regions than others, so the premium we charge takes this into consideration.
Yes, you can. Travel insurance for multiple countries may provide cover for yourself, a travel friend, or the whole family. Always check the policy wording to see if there are any age restrictions for you or anyone travelling with you, and what the specific criteria is for including multiple people on the one policy.
Cover will depend on your country of residence e and the type of policy you have purchased. You may be covered for a stopover if you are leaving the airport and staying in a specified destination for less than 72 hours. You can find out more by checking out our Help Centre article here.
Please note: some World Nomads services may not be available for all destinations. If you have any questions around what services are available for your destination(s) please get in touch.
