What does long term travel insurance cover?

We know there’s nothing more exciting than heading overseas with a ticket in your back pocket. So we designed our policies to cover more than 150 activities and events including casual bar work, skiing, zorbing and much more.

Our policies come with loads of benefits depending on the policy that you buy, but all of them cover:

  • Overseas medical
  • Cancellation
  • Luggage/baggage cover
  • 24/7 worldwide assistance

How do I buy more travel insurance cover?

You can buy more cover, even if you’re already on the road. Generally cover lasts for up to one year, but if you want to extend your trip beyond one year, you just need to jump online to get a quote.

You can’t upgrade your policy type once you’ve departed and started your holiday, so you’ll have to buy a new policy if you need more coverage. That’s why it’s critical you select the right level of cover up front.

What’s not covered on long term travel insurance?

There’s a number of other exclusions so make sure you read your policy and know what you aren’t covered for. These include but aren't limited to:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • If you've taken drugs or alcohol
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Ongoing treatment in your home country

It’s important to remember that World Nomads offers travel insurance… not medical insurance. That means most of our policies won’t cover you for existing medical conditions or ongoing medical care (we'll patch you up and send you home).

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Severed Nerve

I was opening a bag of potatoes with a knife. The knife slipped and cut the 2nd (index) finger on my left hand. I attended the local emergency department in Aix-en-Provence at no charge, they referred me to Clinique Axium the following day. I underwent micro surgery to repair the ulnar nerve in my finger which I had partially severed (50%). Up until this time I was unaware that I had injured the nerve and definitely wasn't aware that I would require surgery. This operation was conducted under local anaesthetic.. I have had 2 follow up appointments at the Clinique the first of which was to issue a prescription to enable my dressings to be changed along with having a specialised splint made to keep my finger in a bent position to enable healing.

We've designed our travel insurance policies to cover more than 150 activities and events, including casual bar work, skiing, zorbing and more. If you're looking to travel long-term, we have travel insurance that can keep you covered for up to 12 months.

What can long-term travel insurance cover?

Whether you’re going on a long trip or a short trip, all of our travel insurance policies provide Australians cover for:

  • Trip cancellation: we may reimburse your prepaid non-refundable trip cost if something unexpected happens and you need to cancel your trip. Covered risks include an unforeseen medical condition or government travel advisory.
  • Trip interruption: coverage may provide reimbursement for your unused, prepaid non-refundable trip costs and for additional expenses you incur, such as airline change fees, if after you’ve started your trip, your trip is interrupted. If you get sick or injured and need to make a change to your travel plans or your trip is interrupted for another covered risk, such as a missed connection due to inclement weather or airline strike, you may need trip interruption insurance. Read your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to make sure your situation is covered before you make a claim. Contact us anytime if you need assistance rebooking your trip.
  • Emergency medical expenses: like an urgent visit to the doctor if you become sick or injured, prescription medicine to help you get well, ambulance transportation, x-rays, and hospital stays.
  • Emergency medical evacuation: if you get injured or really sick and the local doctor recommends that you return back to Australia.
  • Delayed, lost or stolen baggage.
  • 24//7 worldwide emergency assistance.

Our travel insurance policies are designed by travellers, for travellers. At World Nomads we love to explore our boundaries when we travel. We cover more than 150 activities, sports, volunteer and work experiences, including skiing, hiking, scuba diving and more.

Who might want to buy travel insurance for a long trip?

Travellers might be interested in purchasing a long stay travel insurance policy. This could include:

  • University students going to study abroad who want to travel in between quarters or semesters.
  • Backpackers and road-trippers on a long-term holiday.
  • Digital nomads making the most of work and play.
  • Lucky Aussies who have won the Powerball and are heading out to explore the world with their newfound freedom and bags of money.
  • Families travelling for the summer holidays.

How long can travel insurance cover me for?

Our policies are designed to be flexible. We offer short and long-term travel insurance policies, and allow travellers to extend their coverage (or buy a new plan) even while overseas. Aussie residents can buy a World Nomads travel insurance policy for a maximum duration, including all extensions, of 12 months from the departure date.

When you get a quote, you can compare our two plans, Standard and Explorer, and download the full PDS before you buy.

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning to explore the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t worry. You have a couple of options to ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Extend your policy: You can extend your policy online through your World Nomads Member Account. And you can extend from overseas while travelling, as long as you extend your policy before it expires. Terms and conditions, and limitations apply so check the PDS details before you purchase to make sure this will suit your needs.
  • Purchase a new policy: If your policy has expired, you can purchase a new one while you’re still travelling. If you buy travel insurance during your overseas holiday, you are still subject to a 72-hour waiting period from the date that you receive your Certificate of Insurance, before your cover comes into effect. This means that you may not be covered for certain events or losses that happen during this period. Your PDS will have full details to understand the cover, limits, and exclusions.
  • Purchase and track your policies with your World Nomads membership: If you buy travel insurance with us, log in to manage and view multiple policies in one place online, making it easy to buy more policies as needed, and access online claims forms. Make sure you log in before purchasing each new policy.

When you can’t buy more cover

You won’t be able to buy more cover or extend your policy if it’s already expired, if you’re 70 years old (or older) or if the policy/product you bought is no longer available.

What’s not covered by long-term travel insurance?

All travel insurance policies have exclusions and limitations. We won’t provide cover for:

  • If you've taken drugs or overindulged in alcohol.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (remember it's not regular health insurance; it's for out of country medical emergencies).
  • Ongoing treatment at home.
  • Some pre-existing conditions, especially those not stable and controlled.
  • Cancelling your trip due to fear of travel or just changing your mind.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Gastro in Bali

I arrived home around 7:30ish from dinner feeling unwell and attempted to go to sleep. About half an hour later i threw up and had diarrhea which continued on and off for few hours. Around 1:20 am my heart begun palpitation and I felt dizzy with blurry vision. I called my mother and father whom are currently in Bali also on holiday. They came to where i am staying and decided it was best to take me to the emergency room. I was taken to Kasih Ibu Hospital in Denpasar. Where doctors treated me and kept me in the ICU for 2 days for further observation and testing.

Bitten by a shark.

I was surfing and was bitten by a shark in Tortuga Bay, Galapagos Is. I was able to walk to the medical center in nearby Puerto Ayora, where I received emergency medical treatment from Dr. Idrovo. The treatment consisted of cleaning the wound, local anesthetic and ten stitches. A course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories/ pain-killers was prescribed. A follow of check 24 hours later (today) revealed no infection. I am able to provide photos of the injury and treatment.

Travel Insurance for Overseas Medical

A visit to the hospital shouldn't put your credit card into intensive care

Broken bones in Mykonos, mystery illness in Madrid and bus accidents in Thailand, we’ve seen it all and know overseas medical travel insurance can literally be a lifesaver.

That’s why our policy is designed to help British travellers when unexpected illness or injury strikes and to get you back on your feet and, ideally, back on the road.

Cover available under this travel insurance policy is in excess of any statutory health insurance, or any available reciprocal health agreements (including your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Where urgent medical assistance is required, contact our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team before incurring medical costs. You must let us know how you are going and keep in contact with our EA team until you no longer require treatment or assistance.

What’s covered by overseas medical travel insurance?

World Nomads travel insurance covers accidents and emergencies when you’re travelling overseas.

If you’re accidentally injured or suddenly become ill while travelling overseas, our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team is on hand to help you. Cover may include:

  • Assistance locating and paying for medical care including a doctor, dentist, chiropractor or medical facilities in your location or nearby.
  • Hospitalisation.
  • Out-patient care and day surgery.
  • Ambulances and medical transport, including by helicopter if medically necessary and available.
  • Prescribed medicines.
  • Transport home to the UK if we deem it medically necessary.

Am I covered for COVID-19 while overseas?

All our plans include emergency medical cover for travellers who get sick with Coronavirus while travelling overseas, where it is not considered a ‘pre-existing medical condition’ per the definition in the Policy Wording. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Medical Assistance team, who can help you access local medical care;
  • Medical costs including hospitalisation;
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

You can check out our What’s covered for Coronavirus article which has all of the details, including benefit limits and exclusions.

Reciprocal health agreements and medical cover

World Nomads policies cover accidents and emergencies only and is not a health / private insurance policy.  Cover may apply only if there is a sudden and unexpected accident or illness and for expenses for which there is no reciprocal health agreement in the country in which you are travelling.

If you are travelling to a country where the NHS has a reciprocal healthcare agreement, such as Australia or New Zealand, you will need to apply for reciprocal health cover before you leave the UK.

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

Though our policy may cover accidents and emergencies, it’s not a catch-all for every incident. Medical conditions or circumstances we don’t cover include:

  • If you were doing anything illegal. (You didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • Injuries or illness from drugs or alcohol.
  • If you’ve been acting recklessly
  • Pre-existing medical conditions as defined in the Policy Wording.
  • Ongoing treatment at home.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you get home.
  • If there is a reciprocal health agreement in the country in which you are travelling.
  • If you booked a one-way ticket to your destination, we will not pay for your return ticket home.

If things do go wrong contact our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team. They can advise on your cover and get you in contact with medical help as quickly as possible.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

So that's the policy details - why not get a quote and see if it's right for you.

How to get medical assistance

It’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team as soon as possible, so that the team can support you from the time you fall sick or get injured until the time you're well again.

So that they can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Protect your loved ones on holiday

Travelling with your family is a whole different ball game. While you may have once pushed boundaries on your own, you now have loved ones in tow. That’s where World Nomads Travel Insurance comes in, we are here to support New Zealand families when unexpected events occur.

Dependents eligible for cover

With World Nomads travel insurance cover, a dependent is:

  • Child(ren) or grandchild(ren), or others for whom you are the legal guardian and,
  • Who are not in full time employment and,
  • Are 20 years old or younger at the Policy Issue Date and,
  • Are travelling with you on your trip and are listed as covered on your Certificate of Insurance.

Note: age limits for dependents as outlined above will vary depending on your country of residence. Always read the Policy Document so you know what you are and are not covered for.

When applying for a policy there must be at least one adult insured on the policy, and at least one of the insured adults on the policy must be the legal guardian of the dependent(s).

If a dependent is not travelling with their legal guardian they may need their own policy, depending on your country of residence. Read the Policy Document carefully to choose the right plan and level of cover for everyone who is travelling with you. Your policy may have terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

Did you know: You can add your children and grandchildren to our policies at no extra cost? Only adults are charged. It’s just one of the ways we look after families on their travels.

How could World Nomads family travel insurance help?

World Nomads is dedicated to assisting New Zealand families with:

  • 24/7 emergency assistance: Quickly locate local medical services and hospital care if needed.
  • Cover for 220+ adventure activities: Enjoy your holiday knowing that many common travel activity related injuries and related incidents are covered.
  • Overseas medical: Protection for overseas medical emergencies including access to hospitals and dental.
  •  Trip cancellations: If you need to cancel your trip we may help cover some costs.
  • Baggage and high-value items cover: if your baggage or items are stolen, lost or damaged you may be covered, including benefits if your bags are delayed and you need to purchase emergency clothes and toiletries.
  • Coverage for extended stays: if you’re having too much fun and want to extend your family holiday, your plan can be extended while still traveling for up to 12 months from your departure date (terms and conditions apply). You can extend your policy as long as it’s done before the end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Travel insurance tip: If you buy a policy while traveling overseas, you must wait 72 hours before any cover is activated (except for emergency medical as a result of a sudden accident which is witnessed and verified by an independent third party).

Get travel advice through our Travel Wiser content, FAQs, guides, safety information, and travel alerts.

To avoid any surprises when making a claim, it’s a smart idea to become familiar with the various limits, benefits, available upgrades, terms and conditions before you buy a policy.

What’s not covered by our plans

Be sure to review your policy carefully, as there are exclusions, such as:

  • Cancellation for change of mind: Expenses incurred if you simply change your mind are not covered.
  • Illegal activities: Any costs related to unlawful actions are excluded.
  • Non-emergency treatments: Routine treatments that can wait until your return are not covered (this is for travel emergencies only).
  • Certain existing medical conditions: Some conditions may not be covered as specified in your policy.

Tips for New Zealand families planning a trip abroad

  • Prepare in advance: Research and purchase your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday to maximize coverage benefits. Give yourself plenty of time to get to airports, get through security and board transport. Keep your schedule loose and flexible.
  • Read the fine print: Ensure you fully understand the policy exclusions, especially concerning existing medical conditions and non-emergency treatments.
  • Prepare documentation: Keep copies of important documents, such as medical records, passports, birth certificates, and travel itineraries. Always check visa requirements of your intended destination(s) – some countries require you to have at least 6 months validity on your passport.
  • Emergency planning: Familiarize yourself with local emergency services at your destination and share your travel plans with a trusted contact back home. Take relevant medical information with you and keep it handy.
  • Budget for unexpected costs: Consider setting aside extra funds for emergencies, even if you’re covered by insurance.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for families. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What is considered a close relative?
A close relative is defined by us as your spouse/de facto partner, fiancé, fiancée, parent, parent-in-law, daughter, son, adopted or de facto daughter or son, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece, nephew, grandchild, grandparent, step-parent, step-son, step-daughter or guardian.
  • Am I covered if I need to cancel my trip because a relative is sick/injured?

If a close relative is suddenly hospitalised or dies from a sudden illness or serious injury, then your travel insurance policy can help if you have to cancel or re-arrange your trip.

If you have to cancel or rearrange your trip, there may be cover for:

    • The non-refundable portion of your travel expenses, including transport, accommodation, tours/experiences, tuition/course fees, travel agency cancellation fees and frequent flyer points.
    • Your reasonable and necessary additional transport and accommodation expenses to return home early to visit your family, including:
      • the costs incurred to change your flights to an earlier date; and
      • The costs of itemised phone calls and internet expenses incurred when contacting us or your travel provider to rearrange, resume, catch up to or end your original travel plans.
    • Costs incurred to re-arrange your travel plans so you can resume your trip after your visit home.

    How it works

Before you change your plans, you must contact your travel providers to try to minimise your expenses and request any refunds or rescheduling assistance. You may resume your trip under the same policy up until it’s end date (with pre-approval of trip resumption costs first).

You can make a claim online for your additional expenses. You’ll also need a written medical diagnosis from the attending physician and, if applicable, the death certificate to support your claim. Also be aware that any claim submitted will have the policy excess applied.

  • How do I buy travel insurance for the family?

Go online and enter a few details about yourself, your destinations, and the ages of all your family members. We will generate an instant quote with both Standard and Explorer plan options, and you can pick which one suits your specific needs. Once you’ve selected the right level of cover and paid, you will get instant confirmation of your family travel insurance to your selected email.

Travel Insurance for Stolen or Lost Credit Cards

When your cards get stolen or lost and you need a replacement.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Credit card theft is all too common when traveling overseas, with organised crime networks often targeting tourists.

While travel insurance isn't there to cover your card being skimmed (you've got to hit up your bank to recover those losses), some of our policies can help with the cost to replace your credit cards. And if you're  unsure what to do, all of our assistance teams can provide advice.

What's covered by travel insurance if my credit cards are stolen?

What's not covered by travel insurance?

  • Any financial loss if your cards are skimmed or used fraudulently
  • Cancelation or trip interruption expenses unless you're an Aussie or Kiwi
  • If you don't get a report from the police or relevant authority confirming what has happened

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are limits and conditions that apply, so for more information, read your policy carefully before you buy.

What to do if your credit card gets stolen.

It’s essential that you report the theft of your credit card to the police as soon as possible, and get it in writing for your claim.

If you need urgent help, get in contact with our emergency assistance team as soon as possible, so that our team can advise you of what you need to do to get a replacement credit card.

To help our Emergency Assistance teams assist them quickly, they'll need the following:

  • Your policy number
  • Your location
  • As many details as possible about the circumstances

Stolen Card in Venice Beach.

I had my passport and credit cards stolen from my bag while staying in Venice Beach, California. This is the beginning of my trip which I had prebooked and organised flights and tours from LA to other parts of America. I have missed my flight to Las Vegas from SanFrancisco and my flight from Las Vegas to Seattle. I also had to cancel accommodation in Las Vegas and San Francisco. This is due to the fact that the earliest time for me to get a replacement temporary passport and cards is too late.
