A true claim story

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

    U.S. resident in Spain
  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely
    A.Brennan,
    Australian in Thailand
  • Just wanted to say thank you to this wonderful insurance company. When my husband notified the company that I had suffered a life threatening pulmonary embolism, World Nomads took care of everything. They contacted the hospital immediately and checked on my situation, A wonderful nurse called me everyday, speaking to doctors and making sure I understood what had happened and the course of my treatment. I would recommend World Nomads to every traveler. We are still travelling and until we return home will continue to insure with them.
    K.McMahon,
    Australian in Thailand
  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can my kids travel on my Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy?
Absolutely! And the best part? When you purchase a World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, any of your children aged under 18 that are named on the policy will be covered at no extra cost. And what’s more, your kids are also covered even if they go on holiday with another adult – a friend or relative for example. Please note exclusions will apply for pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Can I cancel my Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance?

Of course. World Nomads customers have up to 21 calendar days from when we issue your Certificate of Insurance and policy wording to cancel your Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy. This is referred to as your cooling-off period. If you do choose to cancel your policy within the cooling-off period, we will refund your premium, provided that:

    • you haven’t travelled under your policy; and
    • you are not making a claim; and
    • you are not exercising any other right under the policy.
If you cancel outside of the 21-day cooling-off period, no premium will be refunded. However, discretion may be exercised in exceptional circumstances to provide a refund for unused cover; those exceptional circumstances being bereavement or an unexpected change to your policy resulting in us being unable to continue to cover you. The unused premium will be calculated on a sliding scale basis

  • Is AMT cheaper than a single-trip policy?
An Annual Multi-Trip policy is not cheaper than a Single-Trip policy as a single item purchase. However, it can be far more cost-effective if you plan on taking two or more trips in a year. You’re free to roam without having to purchase an individual policy every time the wanderlust takes hold with Annual Multi-Trip. Just remember to purchase a policy that will cover you for the areas you intend to travel to.
  • Does AMT cover domestic travel?
Our Annual Multi-Trip policy offers cover if your country of residence is Ireland for both international and domestic travel.
  • Will my Annual Multi-Trip policy renew annually?
World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip policies are not currently set-up to auto-renew. We will contact you four weeks in advance of your policy ending to let you know that it is set to expire and give you ample time to purchase your next policy, to avoid any unintended break in your period of cover. Upon your policy’s expiration you will no longer be covered.
  • Is there a limit on the duration of each trip with AMT?
While there is no limit on the number of trips you can take each year with an Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, there is a cap on the total number of days you can be away throughout the year. Trips are limited to 31 days under our Standard plan and 45 days under our Explorer plan. If your planned trip is longer than an Annual Multi-Trip permits you might want to consider taking out a single trip policy instead.

Travel Insurance for Cycling

Protect yourself on two wheels with bundled travel insurance for cycling trips.

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

Traveling through a city or region on two wheels can be an eye-opening experience. You see far more than you would in a car. Cycling has other great benefits too – it gets you in shape, it’s environmentally friendly, and you get to make as many stops as you like. Now with e-biking, cycling has opened up for travelers of all abilities.

But with all the positives of cycling, there’s the chance that you could suffer an accident and end up with a sprained ankle, a broken arm, or even worse, end up in the hospital. That’s why it pays to consider travel insurance*.

What’s covered with travel insurance for cycling?

Are you hoping to enjoy solo time with some independent touring on your bike? Or are you wanting to make new friends and join an organized cycling tour? Either way, travel insurance could help with several aspects of your trip. For US residents, World Nomads may offer coverage for:

  • Baggage Protection: All plans include the non-insurance service Blue Ribbon Baggage, which will track and expedite the return of your airline baggage if it is lost or delayed (this includes bicycles that have been checked in as luggage). If someone swipes your backpack out from under you once you arrive, you could get reimbursed for its current value (which factors in depreciation) or the cost of a replacement, up to a per item and total maximum limit. (Please note we do not offer coverage for your bicycle, unless it is checked in with a common carrier).
  • Emergency Medical Coverage: Cycling through the Alps and taking in the fresh air can be great for the body and mind, but not if it ends up in a bad injury. Emergency medical expense coverage may help reimburse you for things like an ambulance transfer, medication, or a hospital stay. If you get hurt, your health insurance may not always cover you when you are traveling to destinations outside of your network or plan.
  • Evacuation: Your cycling route may be far away from medical facilities. If you take the road less traveled and get hurt, the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team may help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance: If something unexpected happens like an illness or injury, or you’re delayed or interrupted due to adverse weather conditions, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses through our trip cancellation,  trip interruption and trip delay benefits.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

Cycling may be the main reason for your trip but think about all of the other fun things that you might be doing as well. Are you planning to take part in even more sports and adventures during your travels?

World Nomads offers adventure travel insurance that covers more than 250 activities for US residents, including mountain biking, deep sea fishing and pickleball.

We offer four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans, which offer coverage up to 180 days per trip. And if you plan to take numerous trips during the year, the Annual Travel Insurance Plan could be best for you. It has a maximum trip length of 45 days.

Terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions apply. Read the insurance plan documents carefully to choose the right plan for your cycling trip. If you have any questions, just ask us

What's not covered with travel insurance?

Travel insurance can assist with a lot, but there are some things it doesn’t cover.

  • Bicycles or e-bikes (unless they are considered checked luggage by a common carrier).
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Cycling at a professional level or taking part in a competition.
  • Injuries that happen if you are cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Cycling within 100 miles of your home.

Tips for preparing for your cycling trip

As cyclists ourselves, we have learned that it helps to be prepared. Before you hit the road with your bike, helmet and gear, check out a few of our personal tips for having the best cycling trip ever.

  • Check you have all your paperwork. Make sure you have all your appropriate documents before you leave. This can include things like proof of any required vaccinations, visitor permits if you plan to visit any national parks, and special tourist visas for the countries you’ll be visiting.
  • Be responsible when choosing a cycling destination or activity. Does the cycling tour suit your experience level? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination?
  • Wear a helmet and visible clothing. This should be a no-brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning because in many countries around the world, the locals don’t wear helmets when cycling. Another no-brainer is if you’re planning to ride at night, you should use lights and wear high visibility clothing to make sure other riders and vehicles see you.
  • Make sure your bike is set up correctly before you ride. Check the saddle, pedals, handlebars and tire pressure before you set forth on your journey.
  • Save your receipts. Hopefully you will have a perfect trip and won’t need to make a claim. But if you do have a mishap, make sure to save all supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases.
  • Get bike fit: Be sure you are physically capable of the cycling routes you are planning. Have you got a ‘fit for travel’ thumbs up from your doctor to take on the mountains and specific altitudes? Consider using our non-insurance service partner Runway Health for pre-trip medical support to get travel medicines, like altitude sickness pills, delivered to your door before you leave on your trip.
*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described.  Please carefully read your state specific plan documents for a full description of coverage. Travel insurance is included as part of your travel protection plan which contains both insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services. Material included on this page does not represent, nor is it specific to, United States Fire Insurance Company or travel insurance benefits provided on United States Fire Insurance Company’s travel protection plans.

Travel Insurance for Cycling and E-Biking

Take life by the handlebars and check out World Nomads travel insurance plans when cycling on your next adventure.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For lovers of cycling, travelling through a city or a whole region on two wheels can be an eye-opening experience. It can help you get in shape, it’s environmentally friendly, and you get to make as many pit stops to rest and explore as you want. E-biking has added an extra level of awesomeness to the cycling scene, opening it up to travellers of all abilities.

But with all the positives of cycling, there’s also the chance that you could suffer an accident and end up with a sprained ankle, a broken arm, or even worse, end up in the hospital due to a major accident. That’s why you should consider travel insurance if you need to cover your tracks.

Travel insurance for cycling and e-biking

If you are not using your bike as your main mode of transportation during your trip but are just riding for pleasure as you take in the beauty of new surroundings, World Nomads travel insurance plans could cover you for cycling up to 6,000 meters in elevation.

Are you hoping to enjoy some “me time” and do some independent touring on your bike? Or are you wanting to make new friends and join an organized cycling tour? World Nomads travel insurance could cover either situation.

There are two different levels of cycling coverage for Canadian residents – cycling up to 3,000 meters in elevation and cycling up to 6,000 meters in elevation.

  • Cycling up to 3,000 meters in elevation is considered a Level 1 activity.
  • Cycling up to 6,000 meters in elevation is considered a Level 3 activity.

Depending on what new heights you’ll be reaching during your trip, you may need to pay an additional premium when you purchase your policy. Level 1 activities are automatically covered, but you will still need to list this when you purchase your policy. If you are participating in level 2 and 3 activities, you will need to pay an extra premium. Put some thought into what you plan to do or may decide to do on your trip so that you can pick the best travel insurance for your needs.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

Will your travels include even more sports and adventures? World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents and has two different plans – Standard and Explorer. The Explorer plan has higher benefit limits and/or sub-limits than the Standard. When you get a quote, you can compare the coverage of both plans side by side.

You’ll need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip at the time that you purchase your policy. Cycling may be the main reason for your trip but think about all the other fun things that you might be doing so that you are covered for all your adventures.

You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you are participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, you will need to contact us to make sure you’re covered.

What is covered with travel insurance?

For Canadian residents, World Nomads may offer coverage for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If you checked your bike in with a common carrier, and it is delayed by more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, you may be eligible for reimbursement of a rental bike to continue your journey. If your bike is permanently lost or damaged by the airline or ground carrier, baggage and gear coverage could help you get reimbursement to replace it. Review your policy to get information on maximum limits and depreciation.
  • Emergency Medical Coverage: Cycling through the Alps and taking in the fresh air can be great for the body and the mind, but not if it ends up in a bad injury. Emergency medical coverage could help reimburse you for expenses like an ambulance transfer, medication, or a hospital stay. You will still need to have GHIP coverage in your home province while you are on your trip though. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is limited to CAD $40,000.
  • Evacuation: Your cycling route may be far away from medical facilities. If you take the road less travelled and get hurt, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance: If something unexpected happens like an illness or injury, and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.

What's not covered with travel insurance?

Travel insurance can assist with a lot, but there are some things it doesn’t cover. Cycling on Yungas Road in Bolivia is one of those things. It has earned the title of “Death Road” for a reason, so we don’t advise you to take on that adventure, and we won’t offer coverage if you do. Some other things that are not covered include:

  • Cycling over 6,000 meters in elevation
  • Bicycles or e-bikes damaged while in use
  • Any pre-existing medical condition(s) as explained in the policy wording
  • Cycling at a professional level
  • Injuries that happen if you are cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy
  • Cycling within your home province

  • Check you have all your paperwork. Make sure you have all of your appropriate documents before you leave for your trip.
Have you got a ‘fit for travel’ thumbs-up from your doctor to take on the mountains and specific altitudes?
  • Wear a helmet and visible clothing. This should be a no-brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning because in many countries around the world, the locals don’t wear helmets when cycling. Another no-brainer is if you’re planning to ride at night, you should wear high visibility clothing to make sure other riders and vehicles see you.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

Travel Insurance for Rock Climbing

Stay protected on your rock climbing trips with World Nomads.

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

Thrills, adventure and awesome natural landscapes... rock climbing delivers on all three. With so many top rock-climbing destinations globally such as the Dolomites in Italy, Kalymnos in Greece, and Yosemite National Park here in the US, adrenaline junkies don’t have to look far.

Rock climbing can also test your physical and mental abilities. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, you may want to consider travel insurance* for all your adventure activities. It may get you the help you need if you’re injured or if severe weather derails your trip.

What type of rock climbing is covered?

World Nomads offers four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. We cover several rock climbing activities... everything from an indoor rock-climbing day at your resort to a week away climbing the infamous rocks of Portugal.

  • Rock climbing and bouldering up to 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) is covered by all plans
  • Rock climbing, bouldering and soloing, including sport climbing, traditional climbing and via ferrata up to 6,500 meters (21,325 feet) is covered under our Explorer & Epic Plan.
  • Rock climbing, bouldering and soloing up to 8,000 metres (26,247 feet) is covered under our Epic Plan.
  • Deep water soloing is covered under our Epic Plan.
  • Scrambling up to 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) is covered under our Epic Plan.

When you get a quote, you can compare our plans and choose the one that best meets your specific rock climbing plans. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each plan includes.

What does travel insurance for rock climbing cover?

Travel insurance is designed to cover losses arising from sudden, unexpected, and unforeseeable circumstances. For US residents, World Nomads may offer coverage for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline loses or delays the bag holding your gear, our non-insurance service Blue Ribbon Bags will track and expedite its return. Simply report your lost airline bags and Blue Ribbon Bags will take it from there. If your baggage or personal items can’t be located, or they’ve been damaged or stolen, our gear coverage may help with reimbursement of the cost to repair or replace damaged, lost or stolen items. You’ll need to submit receipts, along with police reports or an incident report from your carrier (if your belongings were lost in transit).
  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Rock climbing and fresh air can be great for the body and soul but not if it ends up in a bad fall. Emergency medical expense coverage may help if you need urgent medical treatment for an injury.
  • Emergency Evacuation: Your next rock-climbing adventure may be far away from medical facilities. With medical evacuation coverage, the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team may help you get transported to a place that offers the level of care you need. If your injuries are worse than first thought and local facilities aren’t adequate, you could be repatriated back home. In a life-threatening emergency, call the local authorities first to receive immediate assistance, then contact the Emergency Assistance Team as soon as you are able.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Sometimes unexpected things happen – like a sick or injured traveling companion that puts a stop to your rock-climbing adventure. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.

What's not covered?

Travel insurance does not cover:

  • Participation in a professional rock climbing event.
  • Damage that happens to your climbing gear while you are using it.
  • Going against local authority warnings by entering closed or restricted areas.
  • Not following your doctor’s instructions or what the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advises you to do.
  • Mountain guiding.
  • Rock climbing higher than the altitude listed in your plan.
  • If travelling domestically, rock climbing within 100 miles of your home.
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.

Key travel insurance tips for your rock-climbing trip

  • Got your paperwork? You’ll need the right visas and permits wherever you go to climb – insurance doesn’t cover you for not doing your paperwork.
  • Know where to go… and where not to. Check to make sure you are allowed to camp, climb, or simply be wherever that ‘hot’ climbing spot is.
  • Proof of purchase. Any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases.
  • It pays to be prepared. Check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your climbing instructor (if it’s a group climb) – if any seem unreliable, then reconsider if it’s a smart move to go.
  • Don’t get in over your head. Be responsible when choosing a rock-climbing destination or activity. Does it suit your experience level? Are you using an accredited tour operator?
  • Keep an eye on your gear. Don’t leave your expensive rock-climbing gear or any other baggage unattended – unattended baggage does not qualify for coverage.
  • Be responsible. Choose a tour operator that promotes responsible tourism, works as part of the local community, and actively helps to conserve the environment.
  • Get climbing fit. Ensure you are physically capable of the climbing routes you plan.

Embrace outdoor activities in Alberta, multicultural cuisine in Quebec, and a welcoming atmosphere that promises unforgettable memories.

Wherever your visit to the land of the maple leaf takes you, our policies offer benefits for:

And if you’ve already left on your trip, don’t worry – with World Nomads you can buy travel insurance while on the road.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs on your Canadian adventure.

Cover for medical emergencies

Whether you’re planning on hiking in Banff National Park or seeing the Northern Lights in the Yukon, there’s so much to see and do in Canada that the last thing you want is to get sick or injured and worry about how you’re going to pay medical bills. Our overseas medical insurance offers cover for emergency medical treatment if you need:

Travel tip 1: know your own medical history and needs. For example, if you have existing medical condition(s) that may invalidate your cover. In some cases, you may need to have a doctor sign off that you’re fit to travel. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, contact us.

24/7 emergency assistance

The Emergency Assistance team is available 24/7 and can help you in a medical emergency. The EA team can also arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to medical facilities, and give support to you and your family.

Coverage for Coronavirus

Both our Standard and Explorer policies offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Covid-19 whilst traveling around Canada.

Our Explorer plan also offers cover for some Coronavirus related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses, and some quarantine costs, as well as additional benefits for healthcare workers, residential care workers, and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave canceled by their employer due to Coronavirus.

Check out our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, and contact us if you have any questions.

With World Nomads, you can get an instant quote anytime, anywhere, before you leave home or while you’re on the road.

Trip cancellation

If your travel plans change unexpectedly and some or all of your trip is canceled, our policies offer coverage (up to benefit limits) for some non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.

All of our policies can offer coverage for you if you can’t travel because:

  • A doctor certifies that you’re medically unfit to travel,
  • You, your traveling companion, or a close relative is hospitalized or dies
  • Your transport is canceled or delayed because of severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, or strike.

Delayed baggage

What do you do if you’re arrived in Vancouver, but your bags haven’t? If your luggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, our policies cover essential purchases so you can rest easy while you wait for your bags to turn up.

Our policies also offer coverage if your bags and personal effects are lost, damaged, or stolen.

Travel tip 2: make copies of your essential travel documents and carry essentials such as toiletries, medications, and irreplaceable items in your carry-on luggage.

Cover for adventure activities and sports

If you’re into the outdoors, Canada is the place to go! Our travel insurance policies offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports, and experiences from skiing in Whistler, to hiking in Jasper National Park, or mountain biking in Montreal. We can also cover some water-based activities, including kayaking and white-water rafting.

Keep in mind that some of these activities may require you to use specific safety gear or to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and other terms and conditions may apply. Be sure to read the exclusions section of your policy closely because some activities such as Mountaineering and professional sports are not covered.

If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing while on holiday is covered, please contact us before you organize your policy.

Travel tip 3: Canada experiences diverse climates. Pack layers, waterproof gear, and check weather forecasts before heading out for your adventures.
