Travel insurance when off the grid

Ready to unplug and cleanse mind, body, and spirit? We have coverage for unexpected setbacks while you’re getting away from it all.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Whether off-grid for you means a remote mountain escape in Jasper National Park, a solo road trip in New Zealand, or experiencing rural village life by volunteering, it can be a great way to escape the stresses of daily life.

While you’re planning your off-grid getaway, don’t forget to consider travel insurance which could save you a few headaches and avoid some nasty hospital and medical bills.

Why should I consider travel insurance?

Going off-grid can be the ultimate form of social distancing if you’re seeking solitude, avoiding large crowds, and wanting to unplug from digital devices. Both our Standard and Explorer plans may offer coverage (up to the benefit limits) if:

  • You get injured and need medical transport or evacuation back to your home country.
  • You need coverage for your bags and valuables in case they’ve been lost, stolen or damaged. Keep the paperwork and receipts for your gear.
  • You’ve already left home and forgot to buy travel insurance.
  • You need coverage for emergency medical expenses and hospitalization costs for sudden injury or illness.
  • You’re looking for coverage for a range of adventure sports, activities, and experiences.

Don’t forget to read the policy wording as all plans are different and coverage will depend on your Country of Residence. Never assume you’ll be covered in every situation, as benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions may apply. If you are still unsure about what you are covered for then contact us.

Want to know more about what is and isn’t covered by travel insurance? Read your policy and contact us if you have any questions.

Rental coverage when your road trip comes to a halt

Some World Nomads plans offer damage collision waiver coverage depending on your Country of Residence and your choice of insurance plan, a Standard or an Explorer. Make sure you read your policy and check the amount of coverage your plan provides.

Remember, if you leave your gear in your rental vehicle unattended or unsecured, and it gets stolen, our plans are unlikely to cover it.

If you get into a car accident, rental car travel insurance may help by covering damage to your vehicle and the cost of repairs, as well as charges imposed by the rental company, depending on your circumstances.

Make sure you report the damage to the local authorities and the rental car company as soon as possible. Also, it almost goes without saying, damage due to irresponsible behaviour will not be covered.

Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you purchase there may be coverage for vehicle rentals. However, coverage may not be available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Travel insurance tip 1: before you rent that 1960s Jaguar E-type you’ve always dreamed of, check the policy. Many classic or luxury cars are not covered.

Coverage for adventure seekers and sports lovers

Off-grid getaways are a great way to engage in some high-energy activities.

Maybe abseiling or a thrilling zip line is your thing? Before you pull the rip cord on that adventure, check that your insurance covers your activityDepending on your Country of Residence, you may need to include an insurance upgrade when you buy to have coverage for some activities. If you don’t have the right level of coverage, you won’t be able to claim if something goes wrong.

Many policies cover white water rafting and kayaking, for example, but Class 6, Extreme and Exploratory Rapids aren’t covered. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. Your policy may have conditions and exclusions.

Top travel insurance tip 2: when it comes to any sport, safety should always come first. Responsible behavior is vital for your health and safety. If you need emergency medical treatment or evacuation, you, or someone with you, should contact our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible. They will contact a suitable assistance or ambulance company and arrange medical care.

Coverage for unexpected medical emergencies

Our plans cover emergency medical expenses when you're sick or injured. If your injuries are more serious than minor bumps and scratches, you may need to get to a hospital. Our plans include emergency evacuation coverage for ambulances or transfers to an appropriate medical facility. Be sure to check the maximum benefit amount and terms of coverage in your policy.

Travel insurance tip 3: if your medical emergency means you need to return to your Country of Residence, then your coverage may include medical repatriation.

Go REALLY off the grid, but check your destinations

OK, so there’s off-grid and then there’s really off the grid. Just be aware that the more remote your destination, the more chance there is that these may not be covered. Make sure to check if your off-the-grid destination(s) are covered by our policies.

Some destinations may not be covered due to violence, terrorism or possibly due to being designated a COVID hotspot. Additionally, there will also be certain activities, including volunteering activities, that we cannot cover as they are too dangerous.

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

What does my travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance tip 4: Depending on your Country of Residence, if you decide to travel to a country where there’s already been a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning or its equivalent put in place by your government, then your policy will be cancelled. Governments can issue or change travel warnings without notice, so always check with World Nomads before you pay anything towards your trip.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

Seek solace, adventure, and the great outdoors while camping

Ditch the tech and relax to the rhythm of a wilderness camping trip. From stargazing in Canada’s Jasper National Park to sleeping under the stars on Australia’s Whitsunday Islands, you’ll experience more of everything on a camping break.

What's covered for camping?

If you are injured or become ill travel insurance can help you find medical treatment in a foreign country and take the sting out of unexpected medical costs. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected, World Nomads may offer coverage (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Overseas emergency medical: emergency medical expenses at a hospital or medical centre if you suffer an unexpected injury or illness while hiking. You can submit a claim to recover unexpected medical expenses while camping abroad.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation: approved overseas emergency medical evacuation to the most appropriate medical facility for treatment or repatriation back to your country of residence. Emergency transport is subject to approval from the 24-hour Emergency Assistance team.
  • Trip cancellation: has severe weather or a sick travel companion put a stop to your camping break, and you have no choice but to cancel your trip? Your plan may be able to recover the unused, non-refundable expenses of cancelling your trip.
  • Gear protection: had your camera stolen while camping? Our gear coverage can help with replacing belongings swiped from under your nose. You’ll need a police report to submit with your claim as well as copies of the original receipts and supporting documentation.
  • Delayed baggage cover: has your checked-in baggage been delayed for more than 24 hours? Your plan may cover essential items you purchase while you’re waiting for your baggage.
  • Natural catastrophe: both our plans may cover you if a natural catastrophe occurs and you need to move to a safe place or cannot use your booked accommodation.
  • Coronavirus coverage: we offer coverage for some Coronavirus-related events. Check out our Coronavirus cover article which goes into more detail on all the benefits, including benefit limits and exclusions.

Cover for adventure or sports activities while camping

Both our Standard Plan and Explorer Plan offer cover for level 1 sports and adventure activities such as camping, hiking and mountain biking up to 4,500 meters (14,763 feet), or river tubing, kayaking and bungee jumping.

For Kiwis looking for more adventurous pursuits, you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re planning on camping, hiking or mountain biking up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) or if you’re abseiling or rafting. Specify all the activities you’re planning on your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your Policy Wording for details or contact us.

Why consider travel insurance for camping?

If that dawn hike didn’t quite go to plan and you need a doctor urgently, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. They can help direct you to the nearest medical centre or arrange emergency transport to the most appropriate facility and coordinate payment directly with the hospital (provided cover has been confirmed by us). For general out-patient treatment that’s unlikely to exceed US$725, keep all your receipts so you can make a claim under your policy for reimbursement.

The Explorer Plan also has cover for the rental insurance excess if you’re involved in a motor accident or if your rental car is damaged or stolen, or if you lose the rental key.

Travel Insurance Tip 1: check you have any relevant paperwork as you’ll likely be asked to provide proof for several things such as entry permits for countries you’ll be visiting, special tourist visas, digital COVID-19 certificates, proof of vaccinations and a negative PCR test, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.

What's not covered?

Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (such as camping in an area that is against local authority warnings). Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your Policy Wording.
  • Any adventure or sport activity you did not specify on your policy.
  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated.
  • If you do not use a professional, qualified, and licensed guide and operator for activities where required.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do. If you are unable to contact us before arranging emergency transport or medical treatment, this may impact your cover.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from other sources e.g., service providers, credit card issuers or other insurance policies.
  • If you don't keep your gear safe and secure at all times.
  • Medical treatment that can wait until you return to your country of residence.
  • The policy excess per person per insured event where applicable (check your Summary of Cover).

Travel Insurance Tip 2: before you head off into the wilderness, follow the camping regulations that apply to that region or country. If you unknowingly cross into another country that is not on your certificate of insurance, it could affect your coverage.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Get ready to discover the globe while camping

Camping is the start of many adventures for New Zealanders chasing wilderness and open skies. Plant yourself among the forests of Slovenia or beneath a star-studded desert sky to experience more of everything on a camping break.

What’s covered for camping?

Travel insurance can help with unexpected costs if a sudden illness or injury lands you in hospital, if you’re left empty handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your camping gear in it!), or if severe weather puts a dent in your travel plans.

World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Overseas emergency medical: the great outdoors can be good for the soul but not if it ends in sickness or injury. Your policy may cover you for your overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us. You can submit a claim to recover unexpected medical expenses while camping abroad.
  • Medical evacuation:if your secluded camping spot is far away from medical facilities, our cover may help get you transported to the medical facility best for your care. Subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Baggage protection: had your stuff swiped while camping? Our gear cover may help with replacing belongings that were stolen. Remember to keep copies of your receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • Cancellation protection: if severe weather or a sick or injured travel buddy affects your trip before it’s even begun, and you have no choice but to cancel your trip, there is cover to help with those non-refundable expenses of cancelling your camping trip.
  • Family plans: cover includes two adults and up to eight dependents on the one policy. Plus, plans can be extended while still travelling for up to 12 months from your departure date (terms and conditions apply).

Cover for adventure or sport activities while camping

Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for level 1 sport and adventure activities that include camping and hiking up to 2,000 metres, and activities such as surfing, kayaking and bungy jumping.

For Kiwis looking for more adventurous pursuits you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re planning on camping or hiking up to 6,000 metres or if you’re abseiling or mountain biking. Why consider travel insurance for camping?

Camping holidays can serve up some serious surprises. If that hike to catch the sunrise turns into a nasty misstep and you need a doctor urgently, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. They can help direct you to the nearest medical centre or arrange emergency transport to the most appropriate facility.

Traveller Tip: check you have any relevant paperwork as you’ll probably be asked for proof for several things such as entry permits for countries you’ll be visiting, special tourist visas, digital COVID certificates, proof of vaccinations and a negative PCR test, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.

For self-drive camping trips, the Explorer Plan has cover for the rental insurance excess if you’re involved in a car accident. If you’re taking your own sports equipment such as a kayak, the Explorer Plan also offers cover to hire replacement equipment if:

  • It is accidentally damaged by a carrier; or
  • It is delayed or lost by a carrier for more than 12 hours (the waiting period).

Please note sporting equipment that is checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight.

Camping destinations

Awaken your sense of adventure camping in:

  • Old-growth forests on the coast of the Baltic Sea in northern Sweden.
  • Shiretoko National Park, Japan for hot springs and waterfalls.

What’s not covered?

Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (such as camping in an area that is against local authority warnings). Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Any pre-existing medical conditions which are not listed as an automatically covered pre-existing medical condition as per your PDS. Check your policy wording carefully.
  • If you do not use a professional qualified and licensed guide and operator for activities where required.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
  • Unattended baggage or personal items.
  • The policy excess per person per insured event where applicable (check the Summary of Benefits in your PDS).
