What am I covered for when visiting Costa Rica?
As featured in:
Costa Rica is teeming with incredible wildlife and beautiful landscapes, and like most visitors, the Irish are drawn to its misty volcanic peaks, rushing rapids, epic waves, and exotic rainforests. Many who seek out Costa Rica do so for the adventure and, of course, are in search of La Pura Vida.
To enter Costa Rica, you must fill in a Health Pass 72 hours prior to arrival and show proof of travel insurance. That’s where World Nomads comes in, as our policies provide cover, so you can focus on your holiday.
World Nomads has two levels of cover – Standard and Explorer – that offer different benefits, limits, and sub-limits, so it’s best to compare them. For Irish travellers with their sights set on Costa Rica, our policies include cover for:
Travel insurance tip 1: Irish residents will need to contact your private medical insurance (PMI) provider (if applicable) and follow its emergency medical procedures and claims procedures. Cover available under this travel insurance policy is in excess of any cover provided by your PMI. Also, provide us with details of your PMI provider to help us co-ordinate your care. Where your PMI provider does not cover you, contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team before incurring medical costs.
Irish travellers have long considered Costa Rica a great place to holiday. Most flights from Dublin require a stop on the way and transit time can take up to 16 hours. Those who are well travelled know that long haul doesn’t always mean smooth travelling, flights get delayed or cancelled, baggage goes missing, and documents/personal belongings are mislaid. Insurance can reduce this travel-related stress.
Apart from its spectacular natural beauty, road conditions in this part of Central America can be poor; crime does occur; it experiences hurricanes, and as the country is on the so-called Ring of Fire, it can be earthquake-prone.
When you’re at the beach, always follow lifeguard advice, and be aware of dangerous currents particularly at beaches that aren’t supervised by lifeguards.
If you’re a digital nomad, keep your tech devices secure as thieves are active everywhere.
If you’re hiring a car, our Explorer Plan covers rental car excess if you have an accident. Cover is also available for the cost of replacing rental car keys if they get lost, stolen or damaged during the rental period. You must have a valid licence from your country of residence for the class of vehicle you’re driving overseas, regardless of local laws. You must also comply with local laws of the country you’re driving in.
Please note: travel insurance doesn’t replace the need to have a signed rental vehicle agreement or damage waiver in place.
Explorer Plan policy holders can take advantage of provisions for hijacking and costs associated with natural disasters, so long as the event was unexpected and there wasn’t prior warning.
When it comes to the loss or theft of personal belongings, both plans offer travel insurance cover, but as always cover will depend on your country of residence and the circumstances.
Make sure you list all the activities you’re planning in the policy detail. Higher-risk activities may require an upgrade to the level of cover or an additional premium. Remember our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 and can assist with any language barriers you may face.
Travel insurance tip 2: Costa Rica grants visas to digital nomads. It allows foreign nationals and their families to live and work there for at least 12 months, with the possibility of a year-long renewal. The visa allows exemption from income tax, and a local bank account; this is a significant increase on the 90-day limit on tourist stays.

Costa Rica draws adventure travelers from all over the world. Whether you’ve got your heart set on ziplining through dense rainforest, tackling the epic waves of the Pacific Coast, or taking in the misty volcanic peaks on foot, this Central American destination ticks all the boxes.
Costa Rica is an intriguing destination, but like any country there are risks involved. That is why it is a requirement that travelers show proof of travel insurance to gain entry.
With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance with two levels of cover – Standard and Explorer – as soon as your trip is locked in and you're ready to go, or while you're on the road traveling around Costa Rica. Please be aware that each plan has different benefits, limits, and sub-limits.
Note: All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what you are claiming for, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.
Our plans include cover for:
Depending on where you’re traveling from, flying to Costa Rica may require a stopover which can lend itself to tight turn arounds of connecting flights, lost luggage, and bad weather causing unexpected flight cancellations.
And that’s not all you need to consider, although beautiful, this tropical haven is in an active earthquake, hurricane, and volcano zone, and the mountainous landscape is prone to landslides. World Nomads offers cover for natural disasters, but cover will depend on your Country of Residence and varies between plans. We can assist with all these situations and the right policy can go a long way to reducing the stress involved in international travel.
In Costa Rica, road conditions are often poor, with potholes and inadequate signage, and crime does occur.
When it comes to beach safety, currents can be dangerous and many beaches are unsupervised by lifeguards and lack signage advising of unsafe conditions. If you are a digital nomad, be mindful of your tech security.
If you’re hiring a car, our Explorer Plan includes rental car excess. Cover is also available for the cost of replacing rental car keys if they get lost, stolen or damaged during the rental period. Note: travel insurance doesn’t replace the need to have a signed rental vehicle agreement or damage waiver in place.
If you find yourself in a crisis, the World Nomads 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team is available for roadside assistance referrals or locations of nearby hospitals, medical providers or pharmacies. The team can also help if you’re having trouble getting by in a language you don’t know.

A trip to Spain can offer excitement, adventure, or pure relaxation. You can do it all in Spain!
As featured in:
With such diverse geography and cultures, Spain has plenty to offer travelers from all over the globe. As well as unique art and music, there are countless outdoor adventure activities, and a thriving nightlife.
While your trip will usually go off without a hitch, travel insurance is a backup, and even a life saver, if you or your loved ones run into trouble or are sick or injured. It can also save you a lot of money and headaches.
For example, if you’ve arrived in beautiful Barcelona but your checked-in bags have gone missing and are delayed by the carrier for more than 24 hours after your arrival, we’ll reimburse you (up to the benefit limits) to replace your essential clothing and toiletries while you wait for your baggage to be returned. Check out our Help center article on what to do if the airline carrier loses your bags.
With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or while you're traveling (waiting periods apply); it’s entirely up to you.
World Nomads has two plans – Standard and Explorer - which cover an array of activities including mountain biking, skiing, hiking, kayaking, surfing, and scuba diving. We also offer cover for other key events including:
Travel insurance tip: always make sure you’ve done your research on the countries your visiting as there may be US Department of State and local government imposed travel bans or restrictions in place. If you decide to travel to a country on a ‘Do Not Travel’ list your World Nomads policy will not provide cover for the reasons outlined in the warning. The US Department of State (DOS) currently advises against all but essential travel to many countries and territories due to coronavirus (COVID-19) risks. You can look up DOS foreign travel advice here.
While wandering around the beautiful streets of Barcelona, Madrid, Grenada, and Seville can be a dream come true you also need to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight. Pickpockets often work in teams of two or more and tend to target money and passports. Remember to keep a photocopy or scanned copy of your passport and other important documents separate somewhere safe. Check out our baggage and valuables travel insurance cover designed for international travellers.
While it has almost become a rite of passage for many travelers to visit Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia to enjoy the nightlife and festivities, you should always make sure you are in control and don’t go overboard with alcohol and other substances. We want you to have fun but also to be alert to your surroundings. Buy your own drinks and always keep sight of them. Stick with your travel companions, especially at big festivals.
While many visit Spain for the tapas markets, bars, cafes and museums in Spain, there are also adventures to be had off the beaten track. Spain offers any number of outdoor activities and sports. Some great examples include:
Note: always check your Policy Wording carefully to make sure all your chosen activities are covered. You may need to upgrade your level of cover for a specific activity.
The level of coverage you’ll have for any Coronavirus (COVID-19)-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while traveling around Spain, your benefits may include:
Some of our Explorer plans also offer coverage for some additional COVID-19-related events to assist our travelers, such as cancellation following your diagnosis. Additionally all of our travelers have access to our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team, who can help you with access to local medical care.
To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.
Check with a medical practitioner regarding the vaccinations you may need – especially if you’re traveling to other countries in addition to Spain – preferably at least eight weeks before you travel. Evidence of vaccination (in the form of a certificate) could be a requirement for entry to some countries. Take some time to learn about any specific health risks in the country(ies) you are visiting.
Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

With incredible beaches and mountains, mesmerizing art and culture, and some of the best party hotspots in Europe, Spain has a little bit of everything to offer Irish globetrotters.
From medical evacuations and lost luggage and gear, to the always dreaded travel delays, and now Coronavirus, packing travel insurance can save you a lot of money should something go wrong while you’re in Spain.

As an Irish resident you are entitled to public healthcare in countries in the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland if you become ill or injured while on holiday or on a temporary stay of less than 3 months. Ensure that you get or renew your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you go, and remember, you need one for every person travelling in your group.
Please note that the EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It doesn’t cover medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or treatment of a non-urgent nature. Also, some private hospitals may not accept the EHIC, so you should check with the hospital administrator beforehand and consider a travel insurance policy to fill any coverage gaps.

If you are a UK citizen travelling to Spain, you do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen Area if you’re staying for fewer than 90 days. But starting from 2025, you’ll need to apply for ETIAS visa authorisation to visit Spain and other EU states, which will allow you to visit the Schengen Area without a visa, even though the UK has left the EU. The exact date for when the ETIAS will be mandatory has not yet been announced.
Most UK residents can no longer apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which ended in December 2020. Instead UK travellers must apply for the UK’s Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which offers cover for medical treatment in Schengen states. As the GHIC will not cover all treatment or mishaps, it is a good idea to get travel insurance that covers you for more extensive medical costs and lost luggage.
