Travel Insurance for Stolen or Damaged Baggage

If your gear has been stolen or damaged, here's how we can help.

Protect your belongings with World Nomads Travel Insurance

With multiple bags, valuables, and essential documents in tow, the last thing you want is to deal with lost, stolen, or damaged luggage. In fact, nearly half of all travel insurance claims involve mishaps with baggage and personal effects.

Whether you’re carrying expensive sports gear, a designer outfit for a destination wedding, or just your everyday essentials, World Nomads travel insurance offers coverage for theft, loss, or damage of your luggage and personal effects.

How can travel insurance help if my belongings are stolen or damaged?

Your Policy Document will have very specific limits, both on the total value of the luggage covered, and on individual items. If there're some items you're bringing that exceed those limits, specify them when you get a travel insurance quote.

We offer cover for the following:

  • Stolen or accidentally damaged belongings.
  • If your belongings are stolen, lost of accidentally damaged by a common carrier (a commercial airline for example).
  • Taken from you during an assault.
  • Stolen from your private, locked accommodation and where there's visible evidence of damage and forced entry.

There are of course terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions on how cover applies. For example, we won't cover your electronics or jewellery if you check them into an airline. Read the Policy Document so there are no surprises.

How to report your lost or missing bags and valuables in 4 easy steps

1. Report it

Your first move should be to report it, ASAP. Who you report it to depends on your circumstances. Here are some of the most common situations:

If your luggage has been lost or stolen on public transport:

  • Report the incident to the tur operator or public transport provider and request written evidence, like a Property Irregularity Report (PIR).
  • Gather any relevant tickets, luggage checks, and other documents.
  • Confirm how the transport company will compensate you—get it in writing.

If your luggage has been lost or stolen from your airline or accommodation provider

  • Report it immediately to the carrier or accommodation provider and request written confirmation of the incident from the carrier or the accommodation provider, along with details of any compensation.

If your luggage has been lost or stolen on a tour or at a public venue (e.g. airport, museum, sports stadium)

  • Let your tour operator, venue management, or security know right away. Ask for written confirmation of the loss or theft and details of any compensation offered.

If your situation is not listed get in contact and we can help.

2. Notify the police

File a police report—this step is non-negotiable because your potential insurance claim hinges on it. Head to the nearest police station and make sure you get a copy of the report or at least a reference number.

3. Track and block your phone, tablet and credit cards

Contact your provider to block the service and get written confirmation. And don’t forget to call your bank to block any stolen cards ASAP.

If you have an iPhone, try using the Find My iPhone feature. If you have a Samsung, use the Find My Mobile feature to pinpoint your device’s location on a map.

4. Keep all receipts and paperwork

Hold onto every bit of paperwork—receipts for emergency buys, itineraries, booking and cancellation confirmations for any affected travel arrangements. If you don’t do this, we may reduce or reject your claim.

What’s not covered by travel insurance

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common claims we see where there's no cover include:

  • Anything you leave behind, walk away from or simply misplace or forget.
  • If your credit cards are skimmed.
  • Leaving your gear in an unlocked car overnight.
  • Leaving your valuables unsecured in a shared hostel room.

Travel safety tips before you leave New Zealand

  • Add a distinctive, trackable security tag with your contact info (minus your home address) to make your luggage easier to spot and recover if it goes missing.
  • Be proactive and install tracking apps on your devices before travelling abroad.
  • Scan copies of all your documents and store them in your phone before you leave New Zealand.

Dodgy Taxi Driver.

After arriving in Jordan I was approached by a man claiming to be a taxi driver. He showed me where an ATM was to get out some Jordanian dollars and then took me to his car. After a white knuckle drive to my hostel I hopped out and he grabbed my baggage and chucked it at me and left straight away. When I got into my hostel I realised my camera bag was missing with my camera, storage drive and Jordanian dollars. I filed a report with the police but they have been unable locate the camera and the taxi companies seem to think this man was in fact an opportunist as the have no record of him.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for baggage. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • If the airlines loses my gear, what do I need?
You’ll need a Property Irregularity Report (‘PIR’) from the carrier confirming the delay and any compensation they provided to you or offered to you, your receipts and a copy of your itinerary.
  • Do my items get depreciated?
Yes they do. However, some policies let you pay an additional premium per item so insure them for the value you bought them (if it's under the limits).

Does Travel Insurance Cover Dental?

Learn how travel insurance may cover emergency dental treatment abroad.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 18 May 2022, please check the Policy Document provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased on or from 18 May 2022 please see below.

No one likes going to the dentist, and even less when it's not your regular dentist. But teeth can crack and infections can strike, regardless of where you are in the world. A pitted olive that wasn't; a very, very sticky caramel... it's the worst sort of surprise. World Nomads can help you out with emergency dental cover.

What does travel insurance cover for overseas dental?

If something happens, we only offer cover for the immediate relief of sudden and acute onset of pain on healthy teeth and teeth with fillings. We may cover those teeth if you suddenly have:

  • A cracked or chipped tooth.
  • A dental infection.
  • Dental surgery resulting from an accident.

Cover is limited, and we may need to talk to your dentist back home to see what your teeth were like before you left. Just remember, the policy comes with a NZD$100 excess which will be deducted from your claim.

What's not covered

In short, pretty much anything that's not on the list above. Specifically, there are a few straight-up things we don't provide cover for:

  • Anything routine, or that can wait until you're home.
  • Major dental work such as but not limited to crowns, bridges, dental prostheses.
  • Dental expenses incurred while you’re in New Zealand. This policy doesn't replace private medical insurance or New Zealand's healthcare system.
  • Getting your teeth straightened.
  • Cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening, implants, braces.
  • Dental problems you knew about before you bought the policy.

A lot of the time, our cover will be limited to patching the problem, such as a temporary filling, a pain-relieving injection, that sort of thing. The big stuff will have to wait until you get home.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

How to get dental assistance

So that our 24/7 Emergency Assistance teams can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

White water rafting accident.

While on a white water rafting tour I broke my two front teeth. This happened when I lost balance while going over a rapid, resulting in the back of my paddle hitting my mouth and breaking the lower half of my right front tooth and leaving a smaller fracture in the left front tooth. Immediately following the tour the guide assisted me in finding a local dentistry where I could get the emergency treatment for the pain and to repair the teeth. Because of the damage to the right front tooth it required a full crown, while the crack in the left tooth could be repaired with a veneer. This was a temporary repair and long term it was also recommended that I may also need a root canal.

Travel insurance when participating in snow sports

Simple and flexible travel insurance for skiers and snowboarders. Buy at home or while traveling, and claim online from anywhere in the world.

  • As featured in:

What's covered for skiing and snowboarding?

World Nomads loves the snow and so do the British. When it comes to skiing and snowboarding, Brits are always on the search for the best slopes with the finest powder … but with snow comes the chance of an icy wipeout, unforeseen accidents and damaged gear.  If the slopes get the better of you, World Nomads  travel insurance for snow sports will have your back.

We’ve designed our plans to cover the style of snow sports our Nomads have told us they love the most:

  • Skiing and boarding in ski resorts
  • Cross-country skiing on marked trails
  • Skiing in terrain parks
  • Heli-skiing & heli-boarding
  • Ice skating, snow rafting, and more

Cover between plans varies, special conditions and exclusions apply to certain winter sport activities, so be aware of this and select your sport carefully.

Traveller Insurance Tip: to stay safe, you must follow the International Ski Federation (FIS) Rules of Conduct or the resort regulations. Don’t venture into back country areas without taking local advice and appropriate rescue equipment.

Snow sports cover to protect you and your ski and snowboard gear

To find out more about specific conditions around ski and snowboard coverage for British travellers, please check out our Help Centre article that goes into more detail on how our travel insurance works.

And also, because we know that ski and snowboard equipment costs, such as skis and snowboards, ski boots, and other snow gear, can quickly add up, we offer cover for high-value items if you need to insure your snow equipment.

In the case your baggage and ski gear are delayed, lost and/or damaged by a common carrier, you must report the incident as soon as possible to a responsible officer for the carrier. Get a Property Irregularity Report, or a similar official report, in writing and make a claim directly with the carrier in the first instance and request a refund of the costs you’ve incurred before making a claim on your policy.

Your coverage will vary according to whether you choose a Standard or an Explorer plan. Read your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits and exclusion and conditions of your coverage.

What's not covered for skiing and snowboarding?

We understand that accidents on the slopes happen, such as hitting rocks and trees or getting hit by another skier or snowboarder, especially if you’re only a beginner.  However, sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless. Some things we may not cover include:

  • If you ski or snowboard while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (Not a good idea!)
  • Competition skiing and snowboarding
  • Search and rescue costs
  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team advise you to do
  • Any expenses that relate to a pre-existing medical condition, as explained in the policy wording
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source
  • The policy excess, deductible or co-pay amount as shown in the policy wording

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

Travel Insurance for Scuba Diving

Simple and flexible travel insurance to keep you safe on your next dive trip. Buy at home or while traveling, and claim online from anywhere in the world.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Why You May Need Scuba Diving Travel Insurance for Your Next Dive

Temporarily escaping the UK in search of the world’s most stunning underwater landscapes? Whether you’re exploring the vibrant coral reefs of the Maldives or descending into the depths of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, you’re bound to have a blast!

Before you take the plunge (pun intended), you may want to do a little preparation…just in case. Travel insurance for scuba diving not only covers the unexpected – like medical emergencies or equipment loss – but also ensures you’re protected for activities down in the blue depths.

What am I covered for when scuba diving?

Scuba diving is a mind-blowing experience that takes you into a whole new realm. Whether you're exploring the vibrant coral reefs of Hawaii, diving deep in the Red Sea's Sharm El Sheikh, or discovering the awe-inspiring Yongala wreck on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, we want you to enjoy every moment worry-free.

Our travel insurance plans offer cover for various scuba diving experiences, including:

  • Recreational Scuba Diving: Go up to 30 meters deep and discover the hidden treasures beneath the waves.
  • Learn-to-Dive Courses and Discover Scuba Dives: Take the plunge with qualified instructors who will guide you through your first underwater adventures.
  • Shark Cage Diving: Get up close and personal with these incredible creatures, feeling the adrenaline rush as you witness them in their natural habitat.
  • Snorkelling, Island Escapes, and Live-Aboard Trips: Dive into the crystal-clear waters, explore stunning coral reefs, and embark on unforgettable underwater journeys.
  • Cancellation protection: trip cancellations happen from time to time and travel insurance can help when the unexpected forces you to cancel your trip. Depending on what’s happened, we may pay for the value of your unused, non-refundable expenses.
  • Overseas emergency medical assistance: exploring the world through a scuba diving lens can be a great experience, but not if it ends in illness (ever experienced decompression sickness?) or an injury. Your policy may cover you for your overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us. You can submit a claim to recover unexpected medical expenses while abroad.
  • Air Doctor: have a medical issue that doesn’t require a hospital but does require a doctor (preferably one that speaks your language?). With World Nomads, you can access our worldwide online registry of doctors from the comfort of your hotel room abroad, without having to step foot in an E.R.
  • SmartDelay: Our SmartDelay service hooks you up with free lounge access if your flight's delayed by 90 minutes or more.
  • Family cover: Cover for your family and emergency medical expenses incurred overseas including emergency dental, on both Standard and Explorer plans.
  • Delayed baggage: It can be a pain, however, if it’s been 24 hours and there’s no sign of your bags yet, insurance may cover you for the cost of some basic replacements such as pyjamas, toothbrush, and shampoo.
  • And much more…

Planning to participate in some other thrilling pursuits while abroad? World Nomads covers Brits for more than 150 sports and activities while traveling. Just make sure you pre-plan and select any and all activities you’ll be participating in, when you get your quote.

Buying the right level of cover

World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans, the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. These plans both offer cover for expenses in connection with hospitalisation, lost luggage, repatriation, and more. However, the Explorer Plan provides a more comprehensive policy offering higher limits.

When selecting your scuba diving travel insurance, it's important to consider the activities you'll be doing during your trip. Here's what you need to know:

  • If you plan to go scuba diving at least once, consider the type of diving you'll be doing, including the maximum depth and whether you need to be certified. These factors can impact your coverage.
  • Our policy covers conventional scuba diving only. To scuba dive without an instructor, you must hold a current certification from recognised organisations like Professional Association of Diving Instructors (P.A.D.I.), British Sub Aqua Club (S.A.C.), Sub Aqua Association (SAA), Confederation Mondiale Des Activites Subaquatiques (M.A.S.), or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification.
  • Remember, scuba diving requires training and precautions to ensure your safety. If you don't have a recognised qualification, dive only under the constant supervision of a certified instructor and always follow their rules and instructions.

Note: Read your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions and terms and conditions of your coverage.

Scuba Diving Abroad: Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Insurance?

World Nomads offers you the flexibility to choose between two plan options: Annual Multi-Trip and a Single Trip policy.

  • Single Trip: Are you heading out just once this year? Perhaps a Single Trip policy will be your best bet.
  • Annual Multi Trip: Are you a travelling adrenaline junky with a diving itch that requires a frequent scratch? Maybe consider saving yourself some time (and possibly money) by purchasing an Annual Multi-Trip Insurance policy. Did someone say scuba diving in Croatia in the summer, and Maldives in the winter?

Protecting your scuba diving gear

We know that scuba diving equipment doesn't come cheap. That's why we offer cover for high-value items such as scuba tanks, fins, BCDs, regulators, and underwater film and photography equipment. Though we don’t cover sports equipment while it’s in use, it can still be exposed to damage or loss.

In case of delay, loss, or damage to your baggage and scuba diving equipment by a common carrier, follow these steps:

  1. Report the incident to a responsible officer of the carrier as soon as possible.
  2. Obtain a Property Irregularity Report or a similar official report in writing.
  3. Make a claim directly with the carrier before filing a claim with us.

Please refer to your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions, and conditions related to your coverage.

What's not covered

While we've got your back during your scuba diving adventures, there are a few things we won't cover. Make sure you avoid the following:

  • Scuba diving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (safety first guys – the open oceans are no place to be cavalier)
  • Competitive scuba diving or search and rescue costs
  • Scuba diving / cage diving: deeper than 30 metres
  • Refusal of repatriation or evacuation
  • Engaging in reckless behaviour
  • Ignoring your doctor's instructions or advice from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team
  • Expenses related to pre-existing medical conditions, as explained in the policy wording
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source
  • Exceeding the benefit limits and sub limits set out in the policy wording
  • Sporting equipment while in use

Please note that this is just a summary of cover, and it's essential to read your policy wording in full to understand the complete terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions. If you're unsure about your travel insurance cover, our customer service team is here to assist you.

Key tips when going scuba diving:

  • Only dive if you are fit to do so. You may need to consult your medical practitioner before going scuba diving and get a ‘fit to travel’ approval.
  • Check all your gear to ensure everything is in good working order and then do a buddy check of your fellow divers.
  • Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment. Make sure you check your instructor's credentials.
  • Don't fly for at least 24 hours after scuba diving. The aircraft's pressurised environment can trigger decompression sickness if you still have excess nitrogen in your system.
  • Make sure you have the right level of scuba diving travel insurance and that the kind of diving you plan to do is fully covered.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency! Should you require hospitalization and/or medical evacuation the insurer will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They work very hard to ensure you do not have to pay out-of-pocket. However, should you require to visit an urgent care facility they will not accept any insurance, so you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and, upon your claim being approved, be reimbursed for your expenses.

If your heart's set on trekking beyond the UK, whether you're chasing the sun on Spain’s Camino de Santiago or exploring the ancient Inca Trail in Peru, a bit of preparation goes a long way.

You’ve got your gear sorted, your route planned, but have you considered travel insurance? Just like a good pair of boots, hiking travel insurance is designed to support you when the unexpected happens, ensuring your adventure continues smoothly even when the trail doesn’t.

What’s covered for hiking and trekking?

Are you a seasoned British hiker on the lookout for your next pinnacle or do you prefer the simplicity of a family weekend walk? No matter how adventurous your hiking plans, World Nomads plans may offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Emergency medical assistance: overseas emergency medical expenses at a hospital or medical centre if you suffer an unexpected injury or illness while hiking. Either you, or someone on your behalf, must contact our 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance team. Expenses must be medically necessary and agreed by the insurer in order to receive reimbursement of your covered expenses.
  • Evacuation: approved overseas emergency medical evacuation to the most appropriate medical facility for treatment or repatriation back to the UK. Emergency transport is subject to approval from the 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance team.
  • Trip cancellation: has a sick or injured travelling companion put a stop to your hiking break? Your plan may be able to recover the unused, non-refundable travel expenses.
  • Gear protection: had your camera stolen while hiking in Thailand? Our gear coverage can help with the cost of replacing belongings that were swiped from under your nose. You’ll need a police report to submit with your claim as well as copies of the original receipts and supporting documentation.
  • Lost or damaged baggage cover: have your bags or personal items gone missing? You must report all theft or loss to the police as well as to the common carrier, service provider or other local authority as soon as possible. You must also get a Property Irregularity Report or other incident report from the carrier so you can submit it with your claim, as well as a police report, copies of the original receipts and any luggage tickets.
  • Delayed baggage cover: has your checked-in baggage been delayed for more than 24 hours? Your plan may cover essential items you need to buy while you’re waiting for your baggage to arrive.
  • Coronavirus Cover: we offer cover for some Coronavirus related events. To find out more click here.

All World Nomads policies also carry the following services:

  • SmartDelay™: with World Nomads' SmartDelay, you’ll be covered if your flight’s delayed. Enjoy access to airport lounges and relax comfortably while you wait, ensuring your journey to the trailhead is as smooth as possible, even when things don’t go as planned.
  • World Nomads powered by Air Doctor: unexpected health issues can arise when hiking abroad; whether it’s a sprained ankle on the trail or a sudden illness, World Nomads' Air Doctor feature connects you with trusted local doctors worldwide, ensuring you receive the right medical care when you need it most.

Choose a plan that suits your needs

Both the Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for hiking / trekking / rambling / bushwalking / fell walking up to 3,000 metres on recognised routes. Got the urge to climb a little higher? There’s an option to upgrade your coverage levels (Level 2: 4,500m, Level 4: 6,000m). Make sure you select these upgrades when you purchase, as you can’t upgrade halfway up the mountain.

If you’re lucky enough to have some extra adventure or sport activities planned such as kayaking or mountaineering, check out our article on covered sports and activities, which will help you select the optional upgrades you’ll need to add to your plan when you buy your policy, you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, please read your Policy Wording carefully or contact us if you have any questions.

What’s not covered for hiking?

Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (such as tackling an extreme hiking trip into a remote area when you’re only a beginner). Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your Policy Wording.
  • Hiking / trekking / rambling / bushwalking / fell walking / fell running: where ropes, picks or other specialist climbing equipment is required.
  • Free mountaineering, climbing in remote or inaccessible regions, exploratory expeditions and new routes, high altitude climbing over 6,000 metres, mountaineering expeditions or expeditions to the Arctic or Antarctica, or of a dangerous nature.
  • Search and rescue operations to find or rescue you as per the Policy Wording.
  • Any adventure or sport activity graded above the level of activity cover you have selected.
  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team advise you to do.
  • If you do not follow the local safety advice and warnings.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from other sources e.g. transport carriers, accommodation providers, credit card issuers or other insurance policies.
  • Medical treatment that can wait until your return to the UK.
  • If you don't keep your gear safe and secure at all times.

How to get the most out of your hiking travel insurance

Before you head for the hills, the following tips can help you maximise your peace of mind, safety and validity of cover.

Pre-existing medical conditions

You are not eligible to buy a policy if you travel against medical advice, travel with the intention of receiving medical treatment, or have a terminal illness. World Nomads policies cannot cover claims due to Pre-Existing Medical Conditions (PEMC), regardless of whether the condition is serious or not. You can still purchase a World Nomads policy, but the PEMC exclusion cannot be removed, and you will be responsible for any related costs.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team

  • Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency! Should you require hospitalization and/or medical evacuation our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They work very hard to ensure you do not have to pay out-of-pocket. However, should you require to visit an urgent care facility they will not accept any insurance, so you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and, upon your claim being approved, be reimbursed for your expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance when going scuba diving?

Whether you’re an experienced diver or its your first time heading into the deep blue when going diving you may need to have the right level of scuba diving activity under our travel insurance plans

All our plans are different and may require an upgrade to go scuba diving. Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. Terms and conditions and exclusions apply, check your policy for details or contact us.

What are the different levels of activity cover?

There are three different levels of activity and sport coverage under World Nomads policies, these are as follows:

  • Level 1 - Automatically covers Level 1 sports, activities & experiences in the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan
  • Level 2 - Upgrade required - Also includes Level 1 sports, activities & experiences
  • Level 3 - Upgrade required - Also includes Level 1 & 2 sports, activities & experiences.

Simply specify all the sports and activities you have planned for your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards.

What am I covered for when scuba diving?

Under our Standard and Explorer plans there are certain special conditions and exclusions depending on the type of scuba diving experience you’re planning. See our list below to know what you’ll be covered or not covered for:

  • Scuba diving (qualified to 30 metres)# (1#) - Covered
  • Scuba diving (qualified to 40 metres)# (2#) - Covered

  • Scuba diving - commercial – Not Covered
  • Scuba diving (over 40 metres) – Not Covered
  • Cave diving – Not Covered

(#) You must have the appropriate qualification, certification or license to participate in this sport, activity or experience

Note: sporting equipment that is checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight. Always carefully read your PDS so you are clear on what is and isn’t covered under each plan. If you are still unsure about coverage you can contact us.

What's covered?

The right travel insurance can be very helpful in keeping your trip on track. World Nomads offers two policies – Standard and Explorer – that provide coverage when backpacking overseas.

Our plans are designed to provide cover for sudden and unforeseen events on your next overseas adventure, such as being left empty-handed when the airline loses your luggage, if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or feeling unwell, if severe weather interrupts your plans, and for many other reasons.

World Nomads may offer cover for the following (up to the policy limits):

  • Cancellation protection: trip cancellations happen from time to time and travel insurance can help when the unexpected forces you to cancel your trip. Depending on what’s happened, we may pay for the value of your unused, non-refundable expenses
  • Overseas emergency medical: exploring the world  through a scuba diving lens can be a great experience, but not if it ends in sickness or an injury. Your policy may cover you for your overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us. You can submit a claim to recover unexpected medical expenses while abroad
  • Family cover: it includes overseas medical expenses for up to 12 months after sudden illness or injury. There’s also cover for dental treatment under both Standard and Explorer plans
  • Delayed baggage: It can be a pain, however, if it’s been 12 hours and there’s no sign of your bags yet, insurance will cover you for the cost of some basic replacements such as pyjamas, toothbrush, and shampoo
  • And much more…

Note: Read your PDS for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions and terms and conditions of your coverage.

Travel insurance tip: World Nomads provides travel insurance for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences. While this list might seem exhaustive, it doesn’t cover everything. That’s why you shouldn’t take for granted that your preferred activities will be covered. You can’t upgrade your level of cover mid-way through your holiday, so do consider this wisely.

What's not covered?

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything so understanding what’s not covered is important. There are several situations we can cover you for, but there are also some we just won’t cover.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Diving professionally
  • Reckless behaviour while diving or doing any activity or sports
  • Search and rescue expenses
  • Your scuba dive equipment while it is in use
  • Diving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • If you don’t keep your gear safe and secure at all times.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from other sources e.g., transport carriers, accommodation providers or other insurance policies

  • When scuba diving with a group, listen to your instructor or dive guide regarding the planned route and what to look out for.
  • Monitor your air gauge and make sure you have enough air left to get back to the boat.
  • Descend and ascend slowly during every dive.

You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Centre or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency! Should you require hospitalisation and/or medical evacuation the insurer will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They work very hard to ensure you don't have to pay out-of-pocket. However, should you require to visit an urgent care facility they will not accept any insurance, so you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and, upon your claim being approved, be reimbursed for your expenses.

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover for snow sports?

Depending on the plan and options you choose, our policies can protect you up to policy limits for benefits including:

Choosing the right travel insurance policy for you

We offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits for your winter adventures. It is up to you to choose which plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and matches your specific snow sports plans.

With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, anytime, from anywhere.

What snow sports activities are covered?

As passionate ski bums, we’ve designed our plans to offer cover for the winter activities that our Nomads love the most. We can cover:

  • Skiing and boarding within resorts, including off-piste
  • Backcountry Skiing and boarding
  • Cross-country skiing on marked trails
  • Terrain parks, heli-skiing & heli-boarding (some plans only, check yours carefully)
  • Sledding and tobogganing
  • Snowmobiling, ice skating, snow rafting and more.

It’s important to note that all plans are different and may require an upgrade and/or you to have a relevant licence, qualification or use the services of a qualified guide for cover to apply. Read the Policy Document carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. If you’re not sure whether the snow sports you want to do are covered, contact us.

What’s not covered

While there are several things we can offer coverage for, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any competition, free-style skiing / free-style snowboarding, ski/ snowboard jumping, ski-flying, ski / snowboard acrobatics, ski / snowboard stunting, or ski racing or national squad training
  • Any of your ski or winter sports items lost, stolen or damaged that are unsupervised or unattended, that are over 3 years old or while in use
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure
  • Any adventure activities or sports that aren’t covered by our policies or where you don’t purchase the appropriate level upgrade
  • Any existing medical conditions
  • Any costs related to illegal activities or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Tips for your winter sports adventures

Whether you’re a pro skier or planning your first ever winter trip overseas, these tips may be helpful when planning your next winter getaway:

  • It pays to be prepared: check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your ski instructor – if any seem unreliable then reconsider if it’s a smart move to go.
  • Don’t get in over your head: be responsible when choosing a skiing or snowboarding destination or winter sports activity. Does it suit your experience level? Are you using an accredited tour operator?
  • Keep an eye on your ski gear: don’t leave your expensive ski and winter sports gear or any other baggage unattended - those 'I spaced out” moments might not qualify for coverage.
  • Proof of purchase: any claim you make will need supporting documents such as receipts of your purchases. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you intend to make a claim.
  • Be responsible: choose a ski tour operator that promotes responsible tourism, works as part of the local community, as well as actively helps to conserve the environment.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please contact us.

FAQ's

Here are our most frequently asked questions about skiing and snowboarding. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Does World Nomads travel insurance cover skiing and snowboarding accidents overseas?

Our policies can cover skiing and snowboarding accidents overseas. There’s cover for emergency medical expenses, evacuation if required and even repatriation back home.

It’s important that you select the snow sports activities you intend to do when purchasing your policy. If you don’t declare the snow sports activities you intend to do, you may not be covered if you suffer an accident on the slopes. Restrictions apply to certain winter sport activities, so be aware of this so you’re covered if something goes wrong.

  • Are winter sports equipment covered by World Nomads travel insurance?
We can cover your ski and snowboard equipment if it is damaged, lost, stolen or delayed. Our Explorer plan even covers you for hire of replacement equipment so your time on the slopes isn’t affected! Our travel insurance plans offer different limits of cover for baggage, so be sure to choose the plan that best meets your needs. Keep in mind that we can’t cover damage to sporting equipment while in use, loss, damage or theft of any sporting equipment left unattended or sporting equipment more than three years old. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Do you cover trip cancellations due to adverse weather conditions on the slopes?
If your snow trip is cancelled, delayed or restricted due to a severe weather event or natural disaster, our policies provide cover for the value of your unused travel arrangements, less any refunds you receive, up to the benefit limit of your plan. If your trip is affected by adverse weather conditions, be sure to get supporting documents for your claim.
  • Is snow sports cover just for medical expenses?
Snow sports cover provides cover for the unexpected, whether that’s a medical situation on the slopes, your gear is lost or delayed, or your trip is cancelled due to an avalanche. Our policies can help protect you against those unexpected situations.
