What to know when planning your British getaway.
As featured in:
Savouring a quiet ale in a centuries-old British pub is a time-honoured tradition for Aussies jetting off to the UK. From the drama of West End theatre to the dragon-like mists of the Welsh countryside, this island nation packs a punch that keeps Aussies coming back.
If you head south for the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival in Cornwall, which celebrates all things nautical, it could be worth considering travel insurance to help with those unexpected costs if you are struck down with food poisoning or suffer an injury that lands you in hospital.
World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:
A Scottish summer is full of surprises, sea kayaking the sheltered sea lochs of the Western Highlands or even snorkelling the Outer Hebrides Island chain (yes - you’ll need a thick wetsuit!). But if your gear is delayed, damaged or stolen on public transport before you even arrive, our baggage cover can help.
No one likes being left out of pocket from unexpected medical costs while travelling. If your hike along the beautiful Seven Sisters coastal walk leaves you hobbling in pain and you need to find a doctor or a hospital, our plans have got your back to recover medically necessary expenses such as hospital stays, prescriptions, outpatient treatment and emergency dental treatment.
Our travel insurance plans include emergency medical and repatriation cover if you get sick with Coronavirus while travelling, but terms and conditions as well as benefit limits apply and vary between plans. It’s always a good idea to wear a face mask when visiting any of the UK’s popular hotspots but if you do get sick, contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team so they can help direct you to local medical facilities if needed and help you understand your options. For all the details including benefit limits and exclusions under our Coronavirus cover, check out our Coronavirus cover article.
It’s good to know with World Nomads travel insurance, you can call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team if you suddenly find yourself in a crisis overseas. The EA 24/7 team can help get you to the nearest medical facility, provide help navigating language barriers, or assist with evacuation for medical reasons.
For injuries where treatment costs are not expected to exceed AUD$2,000, you can submit your receipts for reimbursement. If you are hospitalised or if your treatment expenses as an outpatient are likely to go above AUD$2,000, you must call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team who will work with us to confirm cover and they will liaise with the hospital on your behalf to arrange payments.
Traveller tip 1: don’t forget when travelling overseas, your Australian passport must have at least six months before its expiry date.
Whether it’s caving in the limestone dales of Yorkshire or a canoe trip down the Thames, the UK is a haven for adventure lovers. Whatever the activity, both our Standard and Explorer plans off cover for level 1 sport and adventure activities that include hiking up to 2,000 metres, and activities such as kayaking, horse riding and cycling.
For more adventurous pursuits you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re hiking up to 6,000 metres, for example if you’re going mountain biking or skiing in Scotland. Simply specify all the activities you have planned for your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your PDS for details or contact us.
If you manage to get some sweet sunshine, the Pembroke coast in Wales has some of the UK’s best beaches as well as being much quieter than the English coast. If you hire a car for a self-drive holiday, the Explorer Plan has cover for the rental insurance excess if you’re involved in an accident. Check out the article on how our road trip insurance can help you.
Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything. Some things we don’t cover include:
Traveller tip 2: the number 9 bus in London will take you past the best sights the city has to offer for just a few pounds.
This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There may be specific terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that apply depending on what you'll be doing. Please read your PDS carefully. If you’re not sure if something is covered or how to claim, contact us and we’ll let you know.

Nothing beats heading down a mountain or practicing cross country with your lunch in your backpack and your feet pedaling you toward new landscapes. Our nomads, especially those residing in Brazil, love mountain biking, which is why this activity is on our list of covered adventure activities. Before you head off into the great outdoors, read our tips to make the most of your travel insurance.
As long as you're not doing anything reckless, like riding without a helmet or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, World Nomads provides coverage for mountain biking, including on and off road, cross country, downhill and even snow biking.
We offer three plans – Standard, Explorer, and Explorer Plus – each offering different coverage limits and sub-limits, and including different activities. In addition to mountain biking, our plans cover more than 180 adventure activities for our Brazilian nomads.
It's up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific plans. When you get a quote, you can compare our Standard, Explorer and Explorer Plus plans side by side and choose the one that best suits your needs. You can’t upgrade your policy after the purchase, so choose carefully.
Check out your policy wording and contact customer service if you have any questions.
We cover only the occasional practice of mountain biking on your holidays: when you plan to ride a bike or mountain bike for a few days and are not using a bicycle as your main mode of transportation during your travels.
It’s not nice to think about it, but if you suffer an injury or accident on your ride, our emergency medical coverage may cover you for emergencies that require:
If you need medical treatment, it's essential that you get in touch with our Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible so we can assist you.
You might be riding in a remote area, far from medical assistance, so our policies include coverage if your condition requires you to be evacuated to a medical facility or repatriated back home. Just remember you’ll need to get approval from our Emergency Assistance team before an evacuation can take place.
Having an emergency in a foreign country can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy means you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Our Emergency Assistance team can help with a range of services in whatever part of the world you're traveling, can speak multiple languages, and they're available 365 days a year.
If your ride is canceled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event like an illness or injury, you may be able to recover your nonrefundable, prepaid, unused travel expenses.
If there's a delay of more than 12 hours in the arrival of your luggage, we can reimburse expenses for personal items such as clothing and toiletries. If you checked your bike in with your airline, and it's permanently lost or damaged by the airline, you may be entitled to a reimbursement to replace it, subject to depreciation and the limits listed in your policy.
While we can offer coverage for mountain biking, there are some things we don’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

It was my final day in Riga, Latvia. In my small bag I keep all my valuables, because hostels can't always be reliable with safekeeping. It contained my new GoPro, Iphone, digital camera, laptop and hard drive, plus my emergency money (200 euros). I planned on using my cameras and computer for editing later that afternoon. The coast was amazing and, as it got late, I decided to take the train back to Riga city. As I was getting off the train, down the vertical steep steps, I had my bag snatched off my shoulder. In seconds, the doors closed and the train pulled off. Telling authorities on the platforms immediately, they could not assist and referred me straight to the police. Feeling helpless, I went to the police where I was kept for hours, because of English barriers and translations of documents. I walked out just after midnight with my report. A day trip I won't forget soon.

When planning an overseas holiday, it’s not always easy to decide on the types of activities you’re going to do. This is why we’ve designed our travel insurance plans to offer cover for more than 220 adventure sports and activities from hiking, zip lining, dog sledding, scuba diving, snow skiing, white water rafting and more.
Your coverage will vary according to whether you choose a Standard or an Explorer plan, so its important to take the time to understand what activities you are likely to do, and the difference between our plans.
The following is a small sample of what World Nomads plans offer (up to the benefit limits):
Emergency medical and evacuation coverage: if at any time during your trip, you or any of your travelling companions becomes sick or injured, then you’ll need to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team right away. They can help to locate the nearest hospital or medical centre and will facilitate your repatriation back to New Zealand if your treating doctor believes this to be medically necessary.
Trip cancellation coverage: if you or anyone in your party gets sick or injured and you need to cancel your holiday plans, we may cover the non-refundable travel expenses. Please note, travellers must have already been issued with a Certificate of Insurance from World Nomads to have cancellation coverage available to them.
Coverage for extended stays: if you’re having an awesome time on your trip and choose to delay your return home to New Zealand, then you may be eligible to extend your travel insurance policy. You must not have had any change to your health, submitted a claim or intend to and are 69 years old or younger at the time to be eligible to extend. This must be done prior to 11:59pm on the return date that is listed on your policy. The policy may be extended for a total of 12 months from the start date that is indicated on your Certificate of Insurance.
Coverage for baggage and personal belongings: if your baggage or personal items are lost, damaged or stolen, then you’ll need to submit receipts, along with police reports or statements from your carrier (if the belongings were lost in transit).
The features and benefits described are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Policy Document.
Kiwis are well known around the world for their love of the outdoors, sports and trying new experiences. During your holiday, you may wish to try activities and sports that aren’t commonly done back home in New Zealand.
Before purchasing your travel insurance policy, check your Policy Document to make sure that all the sports and activities that you intend to do are covered. World Nomads provides travel insurance for 220+ activities, sports and experiences. While this list might seem immense, it doesn’t cover everything. That’s why you should never take for granted that your preferred activities will be covered.
The following are only some of the many sports and activities covered under our policies:
An upgrade for certain sports may be required and terms and conditions apply for each sport. Check your policy for details or contact us if you have questions.
When hunting around for a travel insurance policy, you might be tempted to take the most cost-effective cover without reading through the Policy Document first. There are different policies to cover different types of holidays, and although reading this document can be a tedious task, it’s best to familiarise yourself with all the benefits, policy limits and exclusions before you purchase your cover.
World Nomads offer two travel insurance plans, the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. Both plans may offer protection for many of the same types of risks and can cover the costs associated with hospitalisation, repatriation, replacing lost baggage, as well as other unplanned for expenses.
However, the Explorer Plan offers a wider level of cover, with a greater range of benefits, and higher policy limits. For instance, you might wish to include cover for hiking or diving on your trip. Therefore, when choosing between the two plans, you would need to know the exact altitudes of your hiking trips and the depths of your planned dives.
As with many of the other activities that we cover, there are different levels of cover for hiking. For example, thinking rips to an altitude of 2,000 metres is classed as Level 1. Hikes to an altitude of 6,000 metres are listed as Level 3. While there is no cover under our policies for hiking expeditions that exceed an altitude of 6,000 metres.
Before choosing the right type of cover for your holiday, you need to research the details of any activities, sports, and tours you will be participating in, to make sure you make you have an adequate level of cover.
When deciding which policy is best suited to your adventures you might want to consider:
Note: It’s important you choose your policy carefully as you can’t upgrade from a Standard Plan to an Explorer Plan mid-trip.
Here are just a few examples of what is not covered under our plans. Please refer to your policy for the complete list.
Here are some general tips for New Zealand travellers to keep in mind.
Be careful with valuables - wallets poking out of back pockets or unzipped handbags displaying the contents inside are irresistible attractions for pickpockets and muggers. Keep all valuable items safely concealed on your body, or securely locked away in your hotel room when you don’t require them.
Listen to local news updates - during your stay in any country, make sure you pay attention to local news broadcasts, including weather updates. If a violent storm is expected to blast the region in the coming days, then it’s probably wise to postpone any outdoor activities or adventures you had planned until a later date.
Only work with qualified and licensed instructors - if you are planning to participate in any activities that require an instructor, then you should investigate whether that instructor has received the right training. They must be qualified and licenced to lead hiking, diving, abseiling, or other types of tours and be registered with the governing association for their recreational activity.
There may be specific terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that apply depending on what you'll be doing. Of course, always read the full terms, conditions limitations and exclusions in the plan you choose so there’ll be no surprises if you need to use it. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
