Consider how travel insurance for New Zealand could help protect your Kiwi adventure.

Aotearoa—the Māori name for New Zealand meaning "land of the long white cloud"—is a land of world-class adventure experiences, stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, and unforgettable cultural encounters. But before you hit the slopes in Queenstown, tramp the Milford Track, or take in the geothermal wonders of Rotorua, consider how travel insurance for New Zealand could help protect your Kiwi adventure.
New Zealand is a playground, but there are plenty of reasons why a New Zealand holiday insurance policy should be part of your plan.
Depending on the plan you choose and your Country of Residence, our trip insurance for a trip to New Zealand may cover you (up to benefit limits) for:
We offer two travel insurance plans: Standard and Explorer. Each policy offers different levels of coverage and benefits. Consider your travel insurance needs and select the right plan for you.
If you need to make a claim, extend your policy, or get a quote (waiting periods apply), we’re here to help.
Travel insurance doesn't cover everything. Common exclusions include:
Be sure to read the Policy Wording and General Exclusions for other scenarios and expenses we don't cover so there'll be no surprises if you need to make a claim.
We offer travel insurance for adventure activities in New Zealand, with 150+ activities, sports, and experiences covered. Summer (December to February) is perfect for kayaking Abel Tasman's turquoise waters, tramping the Milford Track, or diving the Poor Knights Islands. Winter is for skiing in Queenstown, relaxing in the hot pools of Taupo, and exploring Franz Josef Glacier.
Heading to Coronet Peak or The Remarkables? You might want to consider travel insurance for skiing before you go.
With winding alpine routes and coastal highways, New Zealand is perfect for road trips. Our Explorer plan offers rental vehicle excess cover if your rental car is damaged or stolen during your trip. Cover is also available for the cost of replacing rental car keys if lost, stolen or damaged during the rental period. You must have a valid licence in your country of residence for the class of vehicle you’re driving overseas, regardless of local laws. You must also comply with local laws of the country in which you’re driving. Please note: travel insurance doesn’t replace the need to have a signed rental vehicle agreement or damage waiver in place.
Cell reception can be patchy outside cities, and the weather in mountainous regions and remote locations like Fiordland National Park can turn in a blink.
New Zealand has a reputation for being one of the biggest adventure sport hubs in the world. This means two things: adventure is guaranteed and accidents can happen. Follow correct protocol and consider whether you need travel insurance for adventure sports in New Zealand.
Never leave valuables unattended in your vehicle or camper, especially in remote areas or trailheads, even if your car is locked. These areas are hotspots for thieves.

Whether you’re chasing a Euro summer, heading to Japan for the snow season, or planning a quick beach escape to Bali, thinking about how to get the most of your travel insurance before you go can help you in many ways.
Before you take off, here are some tips to help you understand why you should consider travel insurance, and what to look out for.
One of the biggest questions travellers ask is: “What does travel insurance cover if I get sick or injured overseas?”.
Travel insurance policies can differ, but travel insurance may help with overseas medical emergencies, hospital stays, medical evacuation and repatriation back to Australia when medically required. This may be especially important to consider in countries with high medical costs. Be sure to check whether existing medical conditions are covered.
From snowboarding in Canada to scooter rides in Thailand, adventure is often a big part of travelling. World Nomads covers more than 220 adventure sports, activities and experiences.
But not all activities are covered automatically. Based on your intended activities, consider adding specific coverage for activities such as snow sports, water sports and high-altitude hiking.
Check that your planned activities appear in your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and whether any safety requirements or experience levels apply.

For some activities and other benefits, you might need to have a valid license. Under World Nomad’s policies:
You can compare the Standard and Explorer plans and prixes through getting an instant quote.

Phones, cameras, drones, laptops, headphones - they add up. Our travel insurance baggage cover may help if your gear is stolen, damaged, or delayed, up to policy limits, depending on the plan you choose.
It’s a good idea to keep receipts and take photos of your items before you leave. This could help support any future claim for valuables.
World Nomads covers more than 130 countries. But we exclude some places because they are too dangerous, or sanctions affect our ability to offer travel insurance over.
Before you start booking flights and accommodation, check smartraveller.gov.au for your destinations. If there's a 'do not travel' advisory, we can't insure you to go there. These warnings change regularly and might affect your cover, so keep up to date with our travel alerts.

Every policy has travel insurance exclusions - activities, situations, or items that aren’t covered. Some involve unsafe behaviour, unapproved activities, or existing medical conditions not listed in your plan.
Reading the PDS before you purchase travel insurance helps you understand terms and conditions, limits, exclusions, and what you may need to make a claim.
Before you go, save digital and printed copies of your passport, receipts, travel itinerary, and travel insurance policy.
If something unexpected happens overseas, having quick access to your details, including emergency assistance numbers, can make the situation easier to manage.
Here are our most frequently asked questions. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.
Overseas travel can involve costs for medical treatment, cancellations, theft, or travel delays. Travel insurance may help with some of these costs, with different levels of cover depending on the plan you choose.
Australian residents can buy a World Nomads travel insurance policy for a maximum duration, including all extensions, of 12 months from the selected departure date. We offer short and long-term travel insurance policies, and we allow travellers to extend their coverage (or buy a new plan) even while overseas. When you get a quote, you can compare our two travel insurance plans, Standard and Explorer, and download the full PDS before you buy.
If your trip is interrupted, cut short, or portions of your trip are missed for a covered event, then you may be covered. Cover may include illness, cancellation, natural disasters, and more. Our travel insurance plans may reimburse any unused, prepaid expenses, and may be able to help cover additional costs for you to get home. Both Standard and Explorer Plans include trip interruption cover (with different limits).
With World Nomads, you can buy a policy online even if you’re already overseas. Just note that a 72-hour waiting period applies before full cover begins.
World Nomads offers plans for backpackers, gap-year travellers and digital nomads. Get a quote online, and you can even buy a policy after you’ve started travelling. Waiting periods apply.

Because of flexible work and school schedules, more travellers are opting to take flexcations – extended stays away from home that are a mixture of leisure and work. Digital nomads have the flexibility to travel to some of the world’s most intriguing places, but no matter where you’re headed, it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected when travelling. For example, if you’re planning to spend your weekdays working in Rome and your weekends tasting your way through Tuscany, travel insurance coverage for Italy may help protect your trip. Our travel insurance plans for digital nomads include a range of benefits that could help with everything from stolen bags to unexpected medical expenses.
The 9-5 grind of work isn’t so bad if you have your toes in the sand and a fruity drink by your side. These days, you can work from just about anywhere in the world with a strong Wi-Fi connection – including some of the most scenic tropical landscapes like the Bahamas and Jamaica. But what happens if you get hurt while scuba diving or snorkeling during your lunch break? Travel insurance for the Caribbean may help you with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently when you’re travelling outside of your home province.
Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Plan is limited once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels outside of your home province too.
The purpose of a flexcation is to be able to fully enjoy the destination where you’re travelling, and you’ll hopefully be experiencing new cultures and activities while you’re there. But when you’re working and studying remotely outside of your home province, unexpected situations can happen – and that’s why we’ve designed our plans to include travel insurance for flexcations. We also offer coverage for more than 250 sports, activities and experiences.
Emergency Medical Expenses
For injuries that require emergency medical treatment
24/7 Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation
Baggage & Gear Coverage
Baggage damaged by your common carrier or stolen luggage and personal gear

A flexcation isn’t supposed to be all work and no play. Depending on where you’re headed, you may want to enjoy a variety of other activities such as hiking, snorkeling, or skiing. That’s totally fine, because there are 250+ sports, activities and experiences that could be covered when you purchase travel insurance for flexcations. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip, including the type of work you will be doing. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. Costs may vary depending on the additional activities you list.
If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.
Nomads tip: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

So what happens if your boss told you that you could work remotely and be a digital nomad, but then changes his mind as soon as you land in Europe? If you have to go home because your employer won’t let you work remotely anymore, your travel insurance coverage for Europe won’t reimburse you for the costs of your trip. While many things are covered by travel insurance, there are some things that aren’t – including your boss changing his mind. (Although it’s totally not cool.) Other examples include:

From our own experiences of being digital nomads, we’ve worked in some really interesting destinations around the world. It's never been easier to unplug and take off now that you can work and study remotely. But travel glitches can arrive in all shapes and sizes, and it helps to prepare as much as you can. Here are a few of our personal tips that you may find helpful when planning your next flexcation.
Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for flexcations. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team
Yes, flexcations for certain types of work are covered under both plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip, including the type of work you will be doing. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, we suggest you contact us to ask.
Our plans are designed to provide coverage for your baggage and personal effects, including electronic devices and personal computers. Although our plans may provide cover for your personal electronics that you own and take with you on your trip, we will not cover your professional gear that is owned by someone other than yourself or used for professional purposes.
If your trip is cancelled, delayed, or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your unused, non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses (up to the policy limits), and this could include unused, prepaid, non-refundable tours that you paid for in advance. If you get hurt while on your flexcation and require medical assistance, emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You could also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags or Canadian government travel advisories advising travellers not to travel to a destination on your itinerary.
Yes. If your trip has already started, World Nomads can still offer you coverage. You can buy a plan online anytime, from anywhere in the world. If you buy a plan after departing from your home province, you won’t be covered for any loss or expense related to any injury or sickness that occurs in the 48-hour period after your departure date.
Yes, some of the best places to take a flexcation are outside of Canada and World Nomads doesn’t want to limit your fun. For example, if you have travel insurance for France, you could have the opportunity to be a digital nomad in Paris. If you have travel insurance for Japan, you could work remotely and spend your free time skiing in the Japanese Alps. When you get a quote for flexcation travel insurance, you’ll need to input where you’ll be travelling.
World Nomads plans include emergency medical insurance coverage in the event you suffer a medical emergency while on your trip. Travel insurance won’t pay for any routine or preventative medical or dental care, such as allergy medications or routine check-ups. If you have an unexpected medical emergency though, World Nomads Travel Insurance may help with things such as hospital stays, prescription medications, and x-rays. Travel insurance is designed to cover losses from unforeseen and emergency circumstances only, and you must be covered under your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for maximum emergency medical benefits. If you aren’t, emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the full duration of your trip.
You can contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team and they can help direct you to nearby medical facilities. They can also translate for you if you’re travelling outside Canada and your medical team doesn’t speak English or French. Make sure you keep all documentation including doctor reports, invoices, etc. You’ll need those things if you plan to make a claim.
Yes, you could be covered for more than 250 sports, activities and experiences. We know you’ll be doing more than working and studying, and that’s what makes it fun to be a digital nomad. Things like hiking, camping, and biking could all be covered. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you’re participating in an activity and not sure if it’s covered, you can contact us and ask.
Trip cancellation coverage is offered by both plans offered by World Nomads, and you could be reimbursed for pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason.
If your checked-in bags are delayed more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, your plan could reimburse you for the cost of (up to the policy limits) essential items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited.
There are actually some pretty awesome places where you can work remotely here in Canada (and you can get travel insurance for Canada as long as you’re traveling outside of your home province.) But there’s also an abundance of great places around the world where you can embrace your inner digital nomad, too. Make sure you keep all documentation including doctor reports, invoices, etc. You’ll need those things if you plan to make a claim.
Yes, you could be covered for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences. Things like hiking, biking, rock climbing, and camping could all be covered. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you’re participating in an activity and not sure if it’s covered, you can contact us and ask.
Trip cancellation coverage is offered by both plans offered by World Nomads, and you could be reimbursed for pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, horseback riding tours and accommodations if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason.
If your checked-in bags are delayed more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, your plan could reimburse you for the cost of (up to the policy limits) essential items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited.

Without a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement between Australia and Portugal, travel insurance for overseas medical emergencies should be considered.
Just keep in mind that travel insurance covers overseas medical emergencies, not routine or ongoing care. It may include cover for GP visits, hospitalisation, emergency evacuation, repatriation, and more, if you suffer a sudden illness or serious injury while on your trip.

Stay alert in crowded tourist hotspots like Lisbon's Tram 28 and Porto's bustling Ribeira waterfront. If you fall victim to a crime, report it immediately to authorities.
The ocean is a magical place, but it can also be a dangerous one. Portugal's Atlantic coast has powerful rip currents, especially around the Algarve and Nazaré. Always swim in patrolled areas and heed warnings.
Travel during Portugal's shoulder seasons of Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) and you'll be rewarded with cheaper accommodation and fewer crowds.

While Lisbon and Porto are essential stops, expand your itinerary to include quieter stops like Sintra, Óbidos, and Sagres where you’ll discover fairy-tale palaces, medieval charm, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Planning a trip to Europe soon? You will need to be aware of changes coming into effect this year and also in 2026. Read on to find out more and how World Nomads travel insurance can help.
From October 12, non-EU nationals including Aussies who enter a European zone of 29 countries, known as the Schengen Zone, will have to register as part of a new European Union digital border management system called Entry Exit System (EES).
Australian citizens can travel for short trips, without a visa, to the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You'll need a visa if you're staying for over 90 days.
The EES is a separate system from the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will be a separate travel authorization system introduced in late 2026. Learn more about the ETIAS by checking out our Travel Wiser article.
Australian travellers can stay informed with Smartraveller for travel updates, alerts, and general travel information.
