Does Travel Insurance Cover Dental?

Learn how travel insurance may cover emergency dental treatment abroad.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

Having insurance to cover some dental incidents can mean the difference between a taste adventure or a disaster. That’s why we offer travellers some cover for dental treatment just in case you happen to indulge in some tasty food but which may leave a bad taste in your mouth if you chip a tooth or you get an infection.

Whether you’re sampling the ktefa in Morocco or taking the durian challenge in Thailand, sudden and serious pain in your teeth can stop you in your tracks.

What’s covered?

All of our plans can cover emergency dental treatment abroad if you urgently need to see a dentist for the immediate relief of sudden and acute pain while travelling such as if:

  • You get an unexpected infection
  • You've broken your tooth

If you’re experiencing tooth pain, contact our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team who will help you locate a qualified dentist nearby.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common dental claims we see where there's no cover include:

  • Dental work other than that related to emergency dental pain relief
  • Cosmetic dentistry or whitening
  • Pre-existing dental problems as explained in your policy wording
  • Major dental work, such as crowns, dentures, bridges and implants
  • Any dental treatment after your return to your country of residence

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

How to get dental assistance

If you're in a serious accident, it’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance teams as soon as possible so that our teams can support you.

So that our Emergency Assistance teams can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

If you've already visited a dentist and received emergency treatment, you can submit your claim online.

Tooth Erosion.

I had a sudden tooth ache and sensitivity in my tooth and suspected I had a cavity. I went to a dentist who did a visual examination and decided there was erosion on the tooth which caused the pain and sensitivity. He did a filling for the area that fixed the problem.

Travel Insurance for Stolen or Lost Credit Cards

When your cards get stolen or lost and you need a replacement.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Your money is your lifeline when you’re traveling.  So when your credit card is stolen it’s not just inconvenient… it’s seriously upsetting and potentially devastating to your travel plans.

Getting a replacement card back fast is super important.  That’s why as long as you were looking after your credit cards and didn’t just forget them at the restaurant, World Nomads will do all we can to help you get your replacement cards fast.

How does travel insurance cover stolen credit cards?

Credit Card Travel insurance can help with the costs of replacing your credit card.  This may include:

  • The cost of replacing your credit card
  • Necessary transportation charges to get to and from any authorities to report the stolen card or collect a replacement card
  • Any applicable fees

What’s not covered by travel insurance for credit cards?

We won’t cover any fraudulent purchases made on your credit card.  We recommend you always keep the contact numbers of your financial institution handy so you can call them to cancel the card and prevent any fraudulent activity on it should your cards be stolen.  We also won’t cover:

  • If your card gets skimmed
  • If your card gets stolen without you having noticed it while occurring
  • Costs related to the time involved in replacing your credit card
  • Credit cards if left unsupervised such as if you left it behind somewhere, mislaid it or if you don’t take reasonable care to protect it

This is not a full list of what's not covered. Make sure you read your policy wording so that you know what exclusions apply.

What do I do if my credit card is stolen?

If you’re unsure of what to do when your credit card is stolen it’s a good idea to start with reporting it to your financial institution, the local authorities such as the police and if it was stolen when you were traveling on transport, then you should also report it to the relevant carrier.

You will need to make sure get a written report from the police authorities and if applicable, the common carrier, before you make a claim with us. Please, note that excess applicable and cover may vary according to the plan you have purchased.

Gang theft.

On October 8, 2013, I was trying to go back home by taxi. But I had to change taxi and walk for 30meter to get next taxi. It was little dark 7pm. At the time, I was sorrounded by 3 or 4 men. A man choked me and another guy tore off my small bag, and they ran away. There were a camera, passport, watch, wallet with 300 rand and credit card, cellphone, USB Internet modem and so on. I explained to taxi driver and he helped me to bring home without pay. And my house owner helped me to go to police station and explained everything.

Travel Insurance for Trip Cancellation

Learn what's covered if you have booked and paid for your trip and unexpectedly need to cancel.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 14 July 2021 12:00am UTC, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 14 July 2021 please see below.

You haven’t even had a chance to pack your bags or get your passport and you get ill – so ill in fact that as much as you want to go on that planned overseas getaway you’ve been looking forward to, you aren’t well enough to do so.

That’s where our travel insurance for pre-trip cancellation kicks in. Sure, it can’t fix the disappointment you feel at not being able to travel or make you well, but it can help you recover the costs of cancelling your trip.

How does travel insurance cover pre-trip cancellation?

If you’re injured or medically unfit to travel, our policies offer cover for your non-refundable, pre-paid:

  • Travel costs, such as flights, rail and bus tickets you’ve already paid for
  • Accommodation expenses
  • Any tuition or course fees you’ve had to pay upfront
  • Tours

You’ll need to provide us evidence that your trip costs aren’t refundable, and if the airline or hotel says they’ll give you your money back, then you won't be getting a reimbursement from us.

How sick must I be to be covered for pre-trip cancellation?

This insurance is for when you’re seriously unwell and really can’t travel (for example, if you get appendicitis). If you’ve got a cold or mild attack of hay fever, we’re not going to be able to help you out.

In order to be covered, you must either be:

  • Declared medically unfit to travel; or
  • You, your fellow traveler or your close relative in your country of residence must be unexpectedly hospitalized or die as a result of a sudden serious illness or sudden serious injury.

The coverage is conditional on the death, sudden serious illness (including any symptoms) or injury  being unexpected and occurring after you booked and/or paid for the trip and after you purchased the insurance.

Am I covered for Cancellation due to Coronavirus?

As part of our efforts to assist our global nomads in the Coronavirus (COVID-19)-era, we are now offering cover for some Coronavirus-related events.

While epidemics and pandemics (World Health Organization declarations of a public health emergency of international concern) are excluded from the Cancellation & Interruption and Travel Disruption sections of our policy, there may be some benefits available to you if you purchased our Explorer Plan which includes a Coronavirus Travel Costs section, providing you cover for additional Coronavirus-related events.

If you have purchased the Explorer Plan, you may have some cover for trip cancellation events which are outside of your control and caused by:

  • You or a member of your traveling party being diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Your close relative back home being hospitalized or dying due to COVID-19.
  • You or a member of your traveling party who are permanently employed as a healthcare worker, residential care worker or law enforcement officer having pre-approved leave cancelled due to COVID-19.

You can check out our Coronavirus article which has more information, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

If you change your mind about your trip overseas or decide you might want to delay it then we won’t cover you for cancellation.

This coverage is for those situations where you are physically unable to hop on that plane, train or boat due to illness or injury. Other things we won’t cover include but are not limited to:

  • If you booked your travel insurance and/or trip after the symptoms of the injury or illness occurred.
  • You, your fellow traveler or your close relative had refused, not sought or given up medical treatment even though the illness had deteriorated or you should have known it needed medical treatment.
  • Expenses you have not taken reasonable and practical steps to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking agents, travel agents, any compensation scheme, or any other source.
  • You cancel only part of the insured trip.
  • If the cancellation is due to a change of mind, disinclination or reluctance to travel; changed weather conditions; acts of terrorism; acts of war (whether war is declared or not); nuclear disaster.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Be prepared if you need to claim for cancellation.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history
  • Written documentation from the travel provider of reason for cancellation and any refunds

Cancellation insurance is there for when life throws you a curve ball, making sure you’re not out of pocket if you’ve had to put your journey on hold.

From jury duty to an unexpected illness or redundancy, there are many reasons why you may have to stay put instead of taking a cooking class in Chiang Mai… even if that’s the last place you want to be.

What’s covered by Cancellation insurance?

As long as you haven’t left your home yet, we may cover you if you have to cancel your trip under certain circumstances like:

  • You oran immediate relative or a traveling companion is injured, gets a serious illness or dies.
  • You are unexpectedly called to do jury service or appear in court as a witness (but not as an expert witness).
  • You’re made redundant.
  • Your home is damaged and unsafe to leave (as confirmed by an emergency service) within 7 days of the start of your trip.
  • There’s been a theft of travel documents from your home within 7 days of your trip start date and you are unable to replace them before leaving.

In addition, travelers with the Explorer Plan may be covered if the Foreign Ministry of your Country of Residence advise agianst all or all but essential travel for your intended destination.

Am I covered for Cancellation due to Coronavirus?

While epidemics and pandemics are excluded from the Trip Disruption section of our policy, there is an exception around Covid-19.

You may have some cover for trip cancellation events which are outside of your control and caused by:

  • You are certified as too ill to travel due to COVID-19 by a medical practitioner.
  • An immediate relative in your country of residence being hospitalised or dying due to coronavirus.

Our article What’s covered for Coronavirus explains the benefits available if you get COVID-19 and need urgent assistance.

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

There are a number of things you’re not covered for if you cancel your trip. These include but are not limited to:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in the policy wording.
  • The policy excess.
  • Additional costs incurred as a result of not immediately telling the travel agent, tour operator or provider of transport or accommodation that you need to cancel the trip.
  • Costs recoverable from elsewhere.
  • Costs incurred by or on behalf of traveling party members who are not on the Certificate of Insurance.

Travel Insurance for Assault

Get the medical treatment you need in the unfortunate event you've been attacked.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Physical and sexual assault aren't something you want to think about for your trip, but the unfortunate truth is that these attacks happen way too often to travelers. While some destinations have higher incidents than others, no destination is immune.

To add complexity to already horrific circumstances, the laws and customs of some countries can see innocent victims imprisoned, so knowing what to do following an attack can be difficult.

Our Emergency assistance teams have extensive experience understanding and liasing with medical providers on the ground, so that you can get the care you need, when you need it.

Does travel insurance cover assault?

If you’ve been assaulted overseas, all of World Nomads travel insurance policies have the following benefits which can help patch you up and get you on the road to recovery:

  • Hospitalisation
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Ambulances
  • Extra expenses to get you home, if medically necessary

Assault while jogging.

During my holiday in Sydney , Australia, I was physically assaulted by a man while jogging. The attacker approached me and severely punched me in a face. I fell on a ground and almost lost consciousness with blood coming out of my right eye and nose. I was laying on cement pathway crying and screaming for help. Shortly after I was seen by group of teenagers walking nearby and they ran to help me. Those people called ambulance and police. I was taken to hospital and had x-rays and other medical treatments provided. My right eye orbit was broken and I was advised by doctors to have a risky and complicated surgery on low eye orbit to prevent possible vision loss and other complications.

Physical and sexual assault aren't something you want to think about for your trip, but the unfortunate truth is that these attacks happen way too often to travellers.  That's why we're here to help you. While some destinations have higher incidents of assault than others, no destination is immune.

To add complexity to already horrific circumstances, the laws and customs of some countries can see innocent victims imprisoned, so knowing what to do following an attack can be difficult.

If you're unsure what to do, call our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team and they'll be able to guide you. Our Emergency Assistance Team has extensive experience understanding and liasing with medical providers on the ground, so that you can get the care you need, when you need it.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed for when things unexpectedly happen to you. If you pick a fight and end up coming out worse for wear, we're going to take that into account and may decide you won't be covered because you've put yourself at risk.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

Bitten by a tick in Colombia

I was bitten by a tick in Sierra Nevada region on my trip in Colombia, and infected by borrelia. A doctor examined me and I have received treatment for borreliose with antibiotics and probiotics. However, as the brain fog and dizziness persisted even during continuing treatment, the emergency assistance team organised medical repatriation as it is not safe for me to travel with these symptoms.

Travel Insurance for Trip Cancellation

Learn what's covered if you have booked and paid for your trip and unexpectedly need to cancel.

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 18 May 2022, please check the Policy Document provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased on or from 18 May 2022 please see below.

Unlike all the other benefits, cancellation cover starts from the moment you buy your policy, not when your trip starts. So if you've got travel booked starting a month from now and you buy insurance now, if you suddenly need to cancel your trip, you may be covered.

What can World Nomads travel insurance cover if I need to cancel?

If you're a New Zealander, World Nomads can cover you for various reasons if you have no choice but to cancel your trip. Cover is provided for the value of your unused arrangements, less any refunds you receive and up to the benefit limit of your plan. Always ask for refunds from your transport or accommodation providers – you'll be surprised how often you can get something back! And most importantly, get supporting documents for the reason you had to cancel.

We won't list all covered reasons for cancellation here, but the main ones that travellers claim on are:

  • A medical practitioner certifies that you're medically unfit to continue with your original travel plans.
  • You, a travel buddy or a close relative is hospitalised or dies unexpectedly.
  • Your transport is cancelled or delayed because of severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, or strike.
  • You're made redundant or your employer cancels your pre-arranged leave (you need to be in full time permanent employment), the event must occur before your departure date.
  • You're called to jury service or called on as a witness (but not an expert witness).

If you want to see the other reasons for cancellation World Nomads can cover, read this article which will also give you further information on conditions.

Is cover for Coronavirus available?

World Nomads can offer benefits for medical issues related to Coronavirus (COVID-19). If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas and it’s not considered an ‘existing medical condition’ under our policy, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance team, who can help you access local medical care;
  • Medical costs including hospitalisation;
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

In addition, our Explorer Plan also has a Coronavirus Travel Costs benefit for certain events. You can check out our Coronavirus cover article which has all of the details, including benefit limits and exclusions.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance isn't designed to cover everything. Common claims we see where there's no cover for cancellation include:

  • A loss arising from a change of mind, disinclination or reluctance to travel.
  • A loss arising from travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a ‘Do not travel’ warning issued by the New Zealand Government (see www.safetravel.govt.nz/).
  • A loss arising from any act of war (whether war is declared or not).
  • Any existing medical conditions that aren't automatically covered or where all criteria for automatic cover are not met.
  • A loss arising from errors or mistakes in any booking arrangements, including, but not limited to, failure to book a portion of a trip or obtain appropriate travel documents or visas.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Be prepared if you need to claim for cancellation.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history
  • Written documentation from the travel provider of reason for cancellation and any refunds
