Broken bones in Mykonos, mystery illness in Madrid and bus accidents in Thailand, we’ve seen it all and know overseas medical travel insurance can literally be a lifesaver.

In order to help our travellers get back on their feet, our policy has been designed to help out when some unexpected illness or injury strikes, to get back on the road again.

What’s covered by overseas medical travel insurance?

World Nomads travel insurance covers accidents and emergencies when you’re travelling abroad.

If you’re accidentally injured or suddenly become ill while traveling, our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team is on hand to help you. Cover may include:

  • Assistance locating and paying for medical care abroad.
  • Hospitalisation.
  • Out-patient care and day surgery.
  • Ambulances and medical transport, including by helicopter if medically necessary and available.
  • Transport back to your country of residence if we deem it medically necessary.

Am I covered for COVID-19 while overseas?

Depending on your country of residence, our plans include emergency medical cover for travellers who get sick with Coronavirus while abroad (excluding pre-existing medical conditions, as outlined in the policy wording). If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while abroad your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Medical Assistance Team, who can help you access local medical care;
  • Medical costs including hospitalisation;
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

You can check out our What’s covered for Coronavirus article which has all of the details, including benefit limits and exclusions.

Reciprocal health agreements and medical cover

World Nomads policies cover accidents and emergencies only, and it is not a private health insurance/private medical insurance policy. Cover may apply only if there is a sudden and unexpected accident or illness and for expenses for which there is no available reciprocal health agreement in the country in which you are travelling.

If you are travelling to a country where there is a reciprocal healthcare agreement in place with your country of residence, such as Australia, you will need to apply for reciprocal health cover before you leave home, including obtaining a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

Though our policy may cover accidents and emergencies, it’s not a catch-all for every scrape you might find yourself in. Medical conditions or circumstances we don’t cover include:

  • If you were doing anything illegal. (You didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • Injuries or illness from drugs or alcohol abuse.
  • If you’ve been acting recklessly.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in the policy wording.
  • Ongoing medical treatment at home.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you get home.
  • Cosmetic treatments.
  • If there is a reciprocal health agreement between your country of residence and the country in which you are travelling.
  • If you booked a one-way ticket to your destination, we will not pay for your return ticket home.

How to get medical assistance

It’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as you are aware that you will be admitted as an inpatient for at least one night so that the team can support you from the time you fall sick or get injured until the time you're well again.

So that they can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

Dengue.

I woke with a bad fever and headache. I tried to self-medicate however the fever did not subside. I went to the hospital to get checked out. It was confirmed that I tested positive for Dengue Fever and was later admitted for a period due to extremely low counts in my blood.

In today's interconnected world, more and more people are embracing the freedom of living and working abroad as expats or digital nomads. Whether you're setting up a home base in a new country or embarking on a nomadic journey, consider travel insurance when packing for your overseas adventures.

With World Nomads travel insurance you can be covered for benefits from medical emergencies to damaged, lost or stolen tech, cancellations and trip interruptions and more than 150 activities and sports, so you can focus on exploring new horizons.

Why expats and digital nomads should consider travel insurance:

World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.

Here are a few reasons why expatriates and digital nomads keep coming back to World Nomads for their travel insurance:

Flexible policies

We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so we have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long, or as little, as you need. You can choose the policy and options that suit your needs and manage your policy in our online portal.

Accessible coverage even after you’ve left home

Our travel insurance is available to most nationalities living or traveling outside of their country of residence. You can purchase our policies online and you don’t have to be in your country of residence to purchase it; however there are some exceptions to this, so please check the policy before purchasing.

Cover for multiple destinations

If you're a digital nomad travelling to multiple countries, World Nomads travel insurance offers cover for with multiple destinations to ensure you're protected wherever your journey takes you.

Cover for unexpected cancellations

Unforeseen events such as family emergencies or job changes may force you to cancel or cut short your trip. World Nomads travel insurance may reimburse you for non-refundable expenses depending on what has happened and your specific circumstances.

Cover to suit your needs and budget

To help meet the needs of expats we offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer - each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits so you can choose the plan that suits you.

Planning on some adventures?

Part of living and working abroad is having adventures! Depending on your country of residence and the plan you have selected , our policies can offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences, including working and volunteering. Some of the activities we can cover include:

If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing is covered, please contact us.

Expat tip: be sure to have the appropriate visa to work under the local laws of the country you’re visiting.

Cover for accidents and injuries

Our policies can cover emergency overseas medical expenses, (up to the policy limits and when agreed by us, for up to 12 months from the date the illness first appears or injury happens) for events including:

The 24/7 emergency assistance team can arrange medical transport, locate the closest medical facility, and give support to you and your family.

Expat tip: travel insurance is not health insurance. Our policies will not cover you for ongoing care. Your employer or host should take care of your medical cover.

Cover for your tech

If you’re living and working abroad, your tech is your lifeline. Whether you’re plugging into your social network or surfing remotely from a shared workspace, we can help protect your laptop, smart phones, devices and other personal items and baggage, up to certain limits and depending on the plan you choose. For more information on how to cover your tech gear read our Help Center FAQ.

Expat tip: keep a copy of receipts for your electronics as you will need them in the event of a claim.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything so make sure you read the Policy Wording for what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Some of the main things that aren’t covered include:

  • Any pre-existing medical condition
  • Where care is available under any Reciprocal Health Care Agreement
  • Travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a government warning of ‘Do Not Travel’ issued by the U.S. Department of State.
  • Some types of work and duties such as working at heights, operating machinery, working offshore and underground, and working with dangerous animals.
  • Participation in any adventure sports, activities, work, study or volunteer experiences where you don’t select the appropriate upgrade or where it is specifically excluded
  • Anything else that’s listed in the General Exclusions and specific section exclusions in the Policy Wording.

FAQ's

  • How long can I be covered for?

The maximum duration available for any policy, including extensions, is 12 months from the start date. If you need cover beyond 12 months, you can buy a new policy.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

This isn't health insurance!

Expats must be aware this is travel insurance not health insurance.

This means it will not cover you for ongoing medical care. It also excludes many pre-existing conditions as well as any medical treatment that is not considered necessary by our medical specialists. If you’re not sure if you’ll be covered for something, contact us and we can help.

Mugged on the way home.

I was mugged whilst walking back to my hostel. I was alone at the time and was held up with a knife and forced to give the aggressor everything in my pocket which included my iPhone 3G and my 32GB Ipod as well as my money belt containing 200 USD and 400 Peruvian Soles. The aggressor then fled the scene. I reported it t the police station the same day and have the official police report.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Dental?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

Having insurance to cover some dental incidents can mean the difference between a taste adventure or a disaster. That’s why we offer travellers some cover for dental treatment just in case you happen to indulge in some tasty food but which may leave a bad taste in your mouth if you chip a tooth or you get an infection.

Whether you’re sampling the ktefa in Morocco or taking the durian challenge in Thailand, sudden and serious pain in your teeth can stop you in your tracks.

What’s covered?

All of our plans can cover emergency dental treatment abroad if you urgently need to see a dentist for the immediate relief of sudden and acute pain while travelling such as if:

  • You get an unexpected infection
  • You've broken your tooth

If you’re experiencing tooth pain, contact our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team who will help you locate a qualified dentist nearby.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common dental claims we see where there's no cover include:

  • Dental work other than that related to emergency dental pain relief
  • Cosmetic dentistry or whitening
  • Pre-existing dental problems as explained in your policy wording
  • Major dental work, such as crowns, dentures, bridges and implants
  • Any dental treatment after your return to your country of residence

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

How to get dental assistance

If you're in a serious accident, it’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance teams as soon as possible so that our teams can support you.

So that our Emergency Assistance teams can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

If you've already visited a dentist and received emergency treatment, you can submit your claim online.

Tooth Erosion.

I had a sudden tooth ache and sensitivity in my tooth and suspected I had a cavity. I went to a dentist who did a visual examination and decided there was erosion on the tooth which caused the pain and sensitivity. He did a filling for the area that fixed the problem.

Travel Insurance for Trip Cancellation

Learn what's covered if you have booked and paid for your trip and unexpectedly need to cancel.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 14 July 2021 12:00am UTC, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 14 July 2021 please see below.

You haven’t even had a chance to pack your bags or get your passport and you get ill – so ill in fact that as much as you want to go on that planned overseas getaway you’ve been looking forward to, you aren’t well enough to do so.

That’s where our travel insurance for pre-trip cancellation kicks in. Sure, it can’t fix the disappointment you feel at not being able to travel or make you well, but it can help you recover the costs of cancelling your trip.

How does travel insurance cover pre-trip cancellation?

If you’re injured or medically unfit to travel, our policies offer cover for your non-refundable, pre-paid:

  • Travel costs, such as flights, rail and bus tickets you’ve already paid for
  • Accommodation expenses
  • Any tuition or course fees you’ve had to pay upfront
  • Tours

You’ll need to provide us evidence that your trip costs aren’t refundable, and if the airline or hotel says they’ll give you your money back, then you won't be getting a reimbursement from us.

How sick must I be to be covered for pre-trip cancellation?

This insurance is for when you’re seriously unwell and really can’t travel (for example, if you get appendicitis). If you’ve got a cold or mild attack of hay fever, we’re not going to be able to help you out.

In order to be covered, you must either be:

  • Declared medically unfit to travel; or
  • You, your fellow traveler or your close relative in your country of residence must be unexpectedly hospitalized or die as a result of a sudden serious illness or sudden serious injury.

The coverage is conditional on the death, sudden serious illness (including any symptoms) or injury  being unexpected and occurring after you booked and/or paid for the trip and after you purchased the insurance.

Am I covered for Cancellation due to Coronavirus?

As part of our efforts to assist our global nomads in the Coronavirus (COVID-19)-era, we are now offering cover for some Coronavirus-related events.

While epidemics and pandemics (World Health Organization declarations of a public health emergency of international concern) are excluded from the Cancellation & Interruption and Travel Disruption sections of our policy, there may be some benefits available to you if you purchased our Explorer Plan which includes a Coronavirus Travel Costs section, providing you cover for additional Coronavirus-related events.

If you have purchased the Explorer Plan, you may have some cover for trip cancellation events which are outside of your control and caused by:

  • You or a member of your traveling party being diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Your close relative back home being hospitalized or dying due to COVID-19.
  • You or a member of your traveling party who are permanently employed as a healthcare worker, residential care worker or law enforcement officer having pre-approved leave cancelled due to COVID-19.

You can check out our Coronavirus article which has more information, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

If you change your mind about your trip overseas or decide you might want to delay it then we won’t cover you for cancellation.

This coverage is for those situations where you are physically unable to hop on that plane, train or boat due to illness or injury. Other things we won’t cover include but are not limited to:

  • If you booked your travel insurance and/or trip after the symptoms of the injury or illness occurred.
  • You, your fellow traveler or your close relative had refused, not sought or given up medical treatment even though the illness had deteriorated or you should have known it needed medical treatment.
  • Expenses you have not taken reasonable and practical steps to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking agents, travel agents, any compensation scheme, or any other source.
  • You cancel only part of the insured trip.
  • If the cancellation is due to a change of mind, disinclination or reluctance to travel; changed weather conditions; acts of terrorism; acts of war (whether war is declared or not); nuclear disaster.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Be prepared if you need to claim for cancellation.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history
  • Written documentation from the travel provider of reason for cancellation and any refunds

Wife's accident cancels Kili.

I have to cancel my trip to Tanzania because my wife had an accident and she is waiting for a scan of her back. I should fly to Berlin tomorrow, then Bergen and day after to Africa. It is impossible now because she is alone in the house and I have to take her tomorrow to hospital for another scan. Physical and sexual assault aren't something you want to think about for your trip, but the unfortunate truth is that these attacks happen way too often to travellers.  That's why we're here to help you. While some destinations have higher incidents of assault than others, no destination is immune.

To add complexity to already horrific circumstances, the laws and customs of some countries can see innocent victims imprisoned, so knowing what to do following an attack can be difficult.

If you're unsure what to do, call our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team and they'll be able to guide you. Our Emergency Assistance Team has extensive experience understanding and liasing with medical providers on the ground, so that you can get the care you need, when you need it.

Does travel insurance cover assault?

If you’ve been assaulted overseas, all of World Nomads travel insurance policies have the following benefits which can help patch you up and get you on the road to recovery:

  • Hospitalization
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Ambulances
  • Extra expenses to get you home, if medically necessary
  • Counselling services abroad from a psychiatrist or registered counsellor

What's not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed for when things unexpectedly happen to you. If you pick a fight and end up coming out worse for wear, we're going to take that into account and may decide you won't be covered because you've put yourself at risk.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

What do I do if I’m assaulted overseas?

It’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as possible so that they can assess the situation according to location and local laws, and then triage accordingly

So that our Emergency Medical Assistance Team can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Assault while jogging.

During my holiday in Sydney , Australia, I was physically assaulted by a man while jogging. The attacker approached me and severely punched me in a face. I fell on a ground and almost lost consciousness with blood coming out of my right eye and nose. I was laying on cement pathway crying and screaming for help. Shortly after I was seen by group of teenagers walking nearby and they ran to help me. Those people called ambulance and police. I was taken to hospital and had x-rays and other medical treatments provided. My right eye orbit was broken and I was advised by doctors to have a risky and complicated surgery on low eye orbit to prevent possible vision loss and other complications.

Travel Insurance for Scuba Diving

Simple and flexible travel insurance to keep you safe on your next dive trip. Buy at home or while traveling, and claim online from anywhere in the world.

Why You May Need Scuba Diving Travel Insurance for Your Next Dive

Temporarily escaping the UK in search of the world’s most stunning underwater landscapes? Whether you’re exploring the vibrant coral reefs of the Maldives or descending into the depths of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, you’re bound to have a blast!

Before you take the plunge (pun intended), you may want to do a little preparation…just in case. Travel insurance for scuba diving not only covers the unexpected – like medical emergencies or equipment loss – but also ensures you’re protected for activities down in the blue depths.

What am I covered for when scuba diving?

Scuba diving is a mind-blowing experience that takes you into a whole new realm. Whether you're exploring the vibrant coral reefs of Hawaii, diving deep in the Red Sea's Sharm El Sheikh, or discovering the awe-inspiring Yongala wreck on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, we want you to enjoy every moment worry-free.

Our travel insurance plans offer cover for various scuba diving experiences, including:

  • Recreational Scuba Diving: Go up to 30 meters deep and discover the hidden treasures beneath the waves.
  • Learn-to-Dive Courses and Discover Scuba Dives: Take the plunge with qualified instructors who will guide you through your first underwater adventures.
  • Shark Cage Diving: Get up close and personal with these incredible creatures, feeling the adrenaline rush as you witness them in their natural habitat.
  • Snorkelling, Island Escapes, and Live-Aboard Trips: Dive into the crystal-clear waters, explore stunning coral reefs, and embark on unforgettable underwater journeys.
  • Cancellation protection: trip cancellations happen from time to time and travel insurance can help when the unexpected forces you to cancel your trip. Depending on what’s happened, we may pay for the value of your unused, non-refundable expenses.
  • Overseas emergency medical assistance: exploring the world through a scuba diving lens can be a great experience, but not if it ends in illness (ever experienced decompression sickness?) or an injury. Your policy may cover you for your overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us. You can submit a claim to recover unexpected medical expenses while abroad.
  • Air Doctor: have a medical issue that doesn’t require a hospital but does require a doctor (preferably one that speaks your language?). With World Nomads, you can access our worldwide online registry of doctors from the comfort of your hotel room abroad, without having to step foot in an E.R.
  • SmartDelay: Our SmartDelay service hooks you up with free lounge access if your flight's delayed by 90 minutes or more.
  • Family cover: Cover for your family and emergency medical expenses incurred overseas including emergency dental, on both Standard and Explorer plans.
  • Delayed baggage: It can be a pain, however, if it’s been 24 hours and there’s no sign of your bags yet, insurance may cover you for the cost of some basic replacements such as pyjamas, toothbrush, and shampoo.
  • And much more…

Planning to participate in some other thrilling pursuits while abroad? World Nomads covers Brits for more than 150 sports and activities while traveling. Just make sure you pre-plan and select any and all activities you’ll be participating in, when you get your quote.

Buying the right level of cover

World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans, the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. These plans both offer cover for expenses in connection with hospitalisation, lost luggage, repatriation, and more. However, the Explorer Plan provides a more comprehensive policy offering higher limits.

When selecting your scuba diving travel insurance, it's important to consider the activities you'll be doing during your trip. Here's what you need to know:

  • If you plan to go scuba diving at least once, consider the type of diving you'll be doing, including the maximum depth and whether you need to be certified. These factors can impact your coverage.
  • Our policy covers conventional scuba diving only. To scuba dive without an instructor, you must hold a current certification from recognised organisations like Professional Association of Diving Instructors (P.A.D.I.), British Sub Aqua Club (S.A.C.), Sub Aqua Association (SAA), Confederation Mondiale Des Activites Subaquatiques (M.A.S.), or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification.
  • Remember, scuba diving requires training and precautions to ensure your safety. If you don't have a recognised qualification, dive only under the constant supervision of a certified instructor and always follow their rules and instructions.

Note: Read your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions and terms and conditions of your coverage.

Scuba Diving Abroad: Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Insurance?

World Nomads offers you the flexibility to choose between two plan options: Annual Multi-Trip and a Single Trip policy.

  • Single Trip: Are you heading out just once this year? Perhaps a Single Trip policy will be your best bet.
  • Annual Multi Trip: Are you a travelling adrenaline junky with a diving itch that requires a frequent scratch? Maybe consider saving yourself some time (and possibly money) by purchasing an Annual Multi-Trip Insurance policy. Did someone say scuba diving in Croatia in the summer, and Maldives in the winter?

Protecting your scuba diving gear

We know that scuba diving equipment doesn't come cheap. That's why we offer cover for high-value items such as scuba tanks, fins, BCDs, regulators, and underwater film and photography equipment. Though we don’t cover sports equipment while it’s in use, it can still be exposed to damage or loss.

In case of delay, loss, or damage to your baggage and scuba diving equipment by a common carrier, follow these steps:

  1. Report the incident to a responsible officer of the carrier as soon as possible.
  2. Obtain a Property Irregularity Report or a similar official report in writing.
  3. Make a claim directly with the carrier before filing a claim with us.

Please refer to your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions, and conditions related to your coverage.

What's not covered

While we've got your back during your scuba diving adventures, there are a few things we won't cover. Make sure you avoid the following:

  • Scuba diving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (safety first guys – the open oceans are no place to be cavalier)
  • Competitive scuba diving or search and rescue costs
  • Scuba diving / cage diving: deeper than 30 metres
  • Refusal of repatriation or evacuation
  • Engaging in reckless behaviour
  • Ignoring your doctor's instructions or advice from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team
  • Expenses related to pre-existing medical conditions, as explained in the policy wording
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source
  • Exceeding the benefit limits and sub limits set out in the policy wording
  • Sporting equipment while in use

Please note that this is just a summary of cover, and it's essential to read your policy wording in full to understand the complete terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions. If you're unsure about your travel insurance cover, our customer service team is here to assist you.

Key tips when going scuba diving:

  • Only dive if you are fit to do so. You may need to consult your medical practitioner before going scuba diving and get a ‘fit to travel’ approval.
  • Check all your gear to ensure everything is in good working order and then do a buddy check of your fellow divers.
  • Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment. Make sure you check your instructor's credentials.
  • Don't fly for at least 24 hours after scuba diving. The aircraft's pressurised environment can trigger decompression sickness if you still have excess nitrogen in your system.
  • Make sure you have the right level of scuba diving travel insurance and that the kind of diving you plan to do is fully covered.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency! Should you require hospitalization and/or medical evacuation the insurer will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They work very hard to ensure you do not have to pay out-of-pocket. However, should you require to visit an urgent care facility they will not accept any insurance, so you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and, upon your claim being approved, be reimbursed for your expenses.
