Expecting a new baby? Learn why you may want to consider travel insurance that may cover pregnancy complications

  • World Nomads offers plans that may cover losses resulting from complications of pregnancy
  • If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a pregnancy complication, you may be reimbursed for pre-paid, non-refundable, unused, forfeited travel arrangements that you made in advance such as hotel accommodations, flights and tours. Terms and conditions apply to all mentioned above

Why should you consider travel insurance that may cover losses resulting from pregnancy complications?

Did you book your dream vacation and then find out that you’re pregnant a week later? Or do you just need a little babymoon to have some relaxing time before your little one arrives? Either way, many women travel with confidence while pregnant, and you can too. We recommend you consult your doctor first just to make sure it’s safe for you to travel and then start thinking about the ‘what ifs’. As unexpected medical events can disrupt travel plans anytime, you may want to consider getting a quote for travel protection which includes insurance benefits and non-insurance services that may cover pregnancy complications.

How are Pregnancy Complications defined in my travel protection plan?

So what is a pregnancy complication? It’s important to know how World Nomads Travel Insurance plans define it. The following wording is directly from the plan document:

Complications of Pregnancy means conditions (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy. These conditions include hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclampsia, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, acute nephritis, nephrosis, cardiac decompensation, and missed abortion. Complications of pregnancy also include non-elective cesarean section, ectopic pregnancy which is terminated and spontaneous termination of pregnancy, which occurs during a period of gestation in which a viable birth is not possible.

Complications of pregnancy do not include Physician-prescribed rest during the period of pregnancy (except due to conditions noted above), false labor, occasional spotting, morning sickness, elective abortion, and similar conditions associated with the management of a difficult pregnancy, not constituting a categorically distinct complication of pregnancy.

What May Be Covered for Pregnancy Complications

Important to Know

  • Normal labor and childbirth, and routine check-ups are notcovered
  • False labor or morning sickness are not covered. Only reasons listed in your plan documents may be covered
  • In order to be eligible for coverage, you must be able to travel when you purchased the plan, and we recommend not travelling against your doctor’s orders
  • Optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ travel insurance coverage may be beneficial for pregnancy

Take your medical records with you when you’re traveling while pregnant

Another non-insurance service included when you purchase a World Nomads plan is access to our portable records service partner. They have a secure solution that allows you immediate access to your medical records anywhere in the world. If you’re traveling and end up in the hospital because of unexpected complications related to pregnancy, you’ll want your medical team to know about your prescriptions, allergies, medical conditions, immunization and more. It’s included, but you’ll need to register once you purchase a plan that includes coverage for pregnancy complications. Taking the time to set this up could be lifesaving for you and your baby if you unexpectedly have a medical emergency while you’re pregnant and traveling.

Tips we recommend for traveling while pregnant

  • Always check with your doctor before traveling. If your doctor says you shouldn’t be traveling, and you do anyway, you may not be covered by your travel insurance coverage for pregnancy complications.
  • Check with your travel providers to see if they have any restrictions for traveling while pregnant. For example, some airlines and cruises may not allow you to board when you’ve passed a certain point in your pregnancy.
  • Before you leave, see if you need a note from your doctor. Some airlines may ask for a doctor’s note that states how far along you are in your pregnancy and confirms that you aren’t high risk.
  • Book an aisle seat. It makes it easier to get up and down to go to the restroom.
  • To help with circulation, wear compression socks when flying or taking long rides in a car or on a train. According to the National Institutes of Health, women are up to five times more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT) when they are pregnant. The potential for these blood clots may increase when you’re traveling and not moving for long periods of time.
  • Drink plenty of water. The American Heart Association says that dehydration can cause Braxton-Hicks contractions.
  • Pack all of your medications in your carry-on bag. If you have World Nomad Travel Insurance that may include coverage for pregnancy complications, it can also include coverage for lost and delayed bags, but you won’t want to be without any necessary medications.
  • Avoid strenuous excursions. Even though World Nomads covers over 250 sports, activities and experiences, you may want to save some adventures like bungee jumping until after the baby arrives. Exclusion applies to Adventure or Extreme Activities.
20251212-5058490. TThis is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your plan document for a full list of maximums, terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your state specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. Exclusion applies to Adventure or Extreme Activities.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for pregnancy. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Can I fly while I’m pregnant?
That’s up to you to discuss with your doctor. Your airline might ask for a letter from your doctor confirming your expected due date and whether you’re at risk of any complications. It is important to check your airline’s policy regarding pregnancy. If you get to the airport and your airline won’t let you fly, you may not be able to make a claim.
  • What complications of pregnancy may be covered?

Complications of Pregnancy are conditions (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy.

If you have questions, contact us and ask.

  • How do I make a claim?

You can make a claim online, but you’ll need to provide required documents that may include:

    • Copies of receipts and invoices showing the unused, forfeited, prepaid,

non-refundable travel expenses that you paid for in advance and weren’t able to use because of your pregnancy complications

    • Copies of receipts and invoices for medical expenses
    • Documentation from your medical team showing that they advised you not to travel

You must notify us within 20 days of any losses and submit your documentation within 90 days or as soon as reasonably possible.

Travel Insurance for Dental Emergencies

Learn how travel insurance for US Residents may cover emergency dental treatment expenses abroad.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

Broken or chipped teeth can happen at any time. It could be seeded bread in Berlin, olives in Athens, or chestnuts in Istanbul. Or perhaps you’re surfing in Sayulita and get hit in the face by your surfboard, which breaks your tooth.

If pain or injury suddenly strikes while you’re traveling out of the country and you find yourself dealing with a dental emergency, World Nomads Travel Insurance may help cover the overseas emergency dental treatment you need to get relief.

What does travel insurance cover for overseas emergency dental treatment?

Our plans may cover overseas dental expenses if you need to see a dentist while traveling for unexpected emergencies. For example, World Nomads dental coverage can help you if you need to seek immediate relief of sudden pain to healthy, natural teeth for things like:

  • An unexpected infection
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Injuries to your mouth or jaw due to an accident

You may have coverage under the emergency medical section of your plan for things like:

  • The services of a physician or dentist
  • X-rays, treatments and lab tests
  • Hospital fees

Limits, terms, and conditions of overseas dental coverage vary depending on the plan you buy and your past dental history. The pain or injury must have occurred while you were on your trip. When you get a quote for travel insurance* coverage, you can compare the plans side-by-side to determine which one might be right for you. Pay attention to the medical coverage, as this applies to emergency dental treatments too.

To streamline your experience seeking dental treatment abroad, we recommend signing up for our Portable Health Records service before your trip. This non-insurance service allows documents, prescriptions, test results, and emergency contacts to be accessible in one place, anywhere in the world. Whether you need to refill a prescription or to deal with a more serious injury, this service can expedite the process.

Travel insurance tip:To be reimbursed for costs incurred during overseas dental emergencies, your dental illness or injury must be confirmed in writing by your treating medical practitioner. You must get copies of all medical and dental records, reports and clinical notes before you leave the hospital or medical facility as well as original receipts to document your expenses so we may verify your claim. Coverage is limited to the amount shown in your plan wording.

What isn’t covered by travel insurance dental coverage?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Our dental plans cover dental emergencies but not routine dental work. Here are things we don’t cover:

  • General check-ups and routine maintenance
  • Getting your teeth straightened
  • New teeth or fillings following pain relieving treatment
  • Major dental work such as crowns, dentures, bridges, and implants
  • Buying a plan after the pain has set in
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period and were healthy enough to travel when you made the purchase
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home. Remember: the coverage isn’t health insurance; it's for travel emergencies.
  • Treatment needed due to participation in activities outside of your plan’s limits
  • Dental expenses once you return home from your trip

What to do if you are experiencing a dental emergency abroad?

  1. Contact the Emergency Assistance team first: The Emergency Assistance team can help take the stress out of already stressful situations and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  2. Explain what is going on: The 24/7 emergency assistance teams have connections and relationships with dental providers all over the world and can refer you to the most suitable one for your particular emergency.
  3. Refer to your plan documents to make sure what you are dealing with falls within the perimeters of your particular plan: The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions in the plan wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.
  4. Ask yourself: is it a true emergency or is this care that can wait until you get home to the US? Remember, World Nomads Travel Insurance covers dental emergencies only, not routine care. If you are unsure if what are you dealing with is a true emergency, give us a call.
  5. Save all receipts and documentation from the dental provider: Documentation is needed to be reimbursed for qualifying expenses. You’ll likely need to pay in advance. You can submit a claim online either right then or you can wait up to 20 days afterwards to do so.

*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described. Please carefully read your state specific plan documents for a full description of coverage. Travel insurance is included as part of your travel protection plan which contains both insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services. Why should you consider travel insurance coverage for your next hiking and trekking adventure?

Hiking and trekking can take you off the beaten path—and far from help if things go sideways. From twisted ankles on remote trails to gear stolen from your rental car, unexpected issues can derail even the most carefully planned journey. Travel insurance designed for hikers and trekkers may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your route and altitude level, it’s a smart way to explore confidently—whether you're heading to Patagonia or embarking on the Tour du Mont Blanc.

What travel insurance benefits could cover you and your hiking trip?

World Nomads offers coverage (up to the plan maximum benefit amount) for:

  • Medical expenses: if you get hurt while hiking on your trip and need medical attention, our accident and sickness medical expense insurance benefit may provide reimbursement for the treatment you need.
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation: If your hiking injuries are severe, acute, or life-threatening our plans may cover evacuation and transportation to a medical facility best suited for your care, subject to approval from the treating medical physician and the non-insurance 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Baggage and personal effects protection: Our gear coverage may help with reimbursement of the cost to repair or replace damaged, lost or stolen items, including airline checked bags.
  • Trip cancellation: if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason such as an unexpected illness, we may be able to reimburse your pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations.
  • Natural disaster evacuation assistance: if unforeseen severe weather or natural disaster event puts a stop to your trekking adventure, your plan may cover costs to get you out of there and to the nearest place of safety. Certain conditions and limitations apply.

All plans also include several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your hike. These include pre-trip medical consultations and storing your medical records digitally.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be prepared: we recommend that you check the weather, check your equipment, and if you’re going guided, confirm that you’re using an accredited tour operator.
  • Stay healthy: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. It’s best to be sure you are physically capable of it. Consider using our pre-departure telehealth service to obtain prescription medications for the most common travel needs, like altitude sickness pills, delivered to your door before you leave on your trip.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases and a loss or theft report. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you need to make a claim.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • What is the difference between hiking, trekking and mountaineering for travel insurance purposes?

The terms ‘hiking’ and ‘trekking’ are usually interchangeable when it comes to travel insurance benefits for covered activities. Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so travel protection plans like those from World Nomads offer varying levels of coverage depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.

  • Would hiking gear and equipment be covered?

Yes, hiking gear and equipment may be covered under the baggage and personal effects benefit of our plans if it's lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged during your trip. Maximum benefit amounts and conditions vary by plan, so be sure to review your chosen plan documents —especially if you're carrying high-value items like trekking poles, boots, or GPS devices. Note: coverage does not include wear and tear or gear damaged during use. Additional terms and conditions apply.

  • Does my plan include emergency evacuation coverage?

Yes, our travel insurance coverage includes emergency evacuation if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefit may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.

  • Do I need insurance coverage for multi-day hiking trips?

Yes, multi-day hiking and trekking adventures may require more robust travel insurance coverage due to the added risks of being in remote areas for extended periods. World Nomads offers a range of plans that may cover emergency medical care, evacuation, trip cancellation, gear protection, and more. Our plans also include different elevation limits, so whether you're doing a relaxed overnight hike or a challenging high-altitude trek, you can choose a plan that fits the level of adventure you're planning.

    • Elevation coverage maximum by plan:
      • Standard Plan – up to 19,685 feet / 6,000 meters
      • Annual Plan – up to 19,685 feet / 6,000 meters
      • Explorer Plan – up to 21,325 feet / 6,500 meters
      • Epic Plan – up to 26,247 feet / 8,000 meters

Travel Insurance for Death Overseas

Learn how travel insurance could help your family if you die overseas.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

You may not worry about what happens to you after you die, but your family will, particularly if it happens oversesas - so it’s important you get yourself covered just in case. Unexpected accidents or serious illnesses can be fatal, and our teams are here to help your family and friends if you die overseas.

The priority of your loved ones will be to bring you home; we’ll be there to help take away the added stress of navigating overseas laws, different languages and formalities.

What’s covered by travel insurance if you die overseas?

If you die overseas as the result of an accident or a sudden and unexpected illness, you can be covered for:

  • Return of your remains to your home country
  • Local cremation or burial overseas
  • Reasonable additional expenses if someone needs to travel to identify your body

In addition, we also have emergency assistance teams who can assist your family – keeping them informed, putting them in contact with consular officials, and helping them with the often difficult administration that surrounds overseas death.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

Unfortunately, travel insurance is not designed to cover everyting, including:

  • Suicide
  • Deaths as a result of drugs or alcohol
  • If a pre-existing condition causes your death (unless otherwise stated in the policy)
  • Any costs within your home country once your remains are returned to your next of kin

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. It is important that you read and understand your policy before you travel as your coverage may be subject to certain limitations or exclusions. This policy provides complete descriptions of the benefits, terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of your insurance coverage.

How your family or friend can get assistance if you die overseas.

It’s essential that your family or travel buddy get in contact with our Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible, so that our team can support them from the time you die until your remains have returned home.

To help our Emergency Assistance team assist them quickly, they'll need the following:

  • Your policy number
  • Your location
  • As many details as possible about the circumstances surrounding your death

So, leave a copy of your policy with your family or friend, just in case they need to use it.

How we help.

Overseas deaths are the most heartbreaking cases to help with. No one is ready to deal with the sudden death of a close relative overseas, let alone having to deal with the complex organisation and unexpected high costs. The World Nomads Emergency Assistance team can coordinate a local burial or bringing home loved ones with trusted partners on the ground, and ensure that families and friends are supported throughout such a difficult time.

If the event is unforeseen – which by their very nature terrorist attacks almost all are, you could be covered for:

  • Hospitalization
  • Emergency out-patient treatment
  • Medical transportation to bring you home

In addition, we also have emergency assistance teams who can assist you – keeping you informed, putting you in contact with consular officials, arranging medical care, and getting in touch with your family for you.

What’s not covered by travel insurance if there's a terror attack?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Our Emergency Assistance team often sees claims for terrorism that have to be declined because our plan excludes them. They include:

  • Cancellation or trip interruption expenses
  • Changing your mind about traveling
  • Buying a policy AFTER the event happens
  • Traveling to a country that the Canadian government has advised travelers not to visit (if the warning is issued before you begin your trip or buy your policy)

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

How to get help if you're hurt in a terror attack

It’s essential that you get in contact with our Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible so that our team can support you from the time you fall sick or get injured until the time you get home.

So that our Emergency Assistance team can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Travel Insurance for Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation

When home is the best place for healthcare and healing.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Whether you’re trekking to see Machu Picchu, surfing in Maui, scuba diving off the coast of Thailand, or skiing in Europe, accidents or sickness can happen at any time during your trip. If you’re far from appropriate medical facilities, emergency evacuation and repatriation insurance can help get you the care you need.

What are the benefits of emergency evacuation and repatriation insurance?

Unexpected medical emergencies can happen at any time, whether you’re near or far from home. Appendicitis, a broken leg, animal bites and even a bout of severe food poisoning have all sent travellers to the hospital. But what happens if the nearest hospital or appropriate medical facility is dozens or even hundreds of kilometres away?

Medical transport – particularly Medivac flights – can cost tens of thousands of dollars. What could be a lifesaver could also deplete your savings. Emergency evacuation and repatriation coverage may cover, up to the policy limits, the cost to get you to the closest appropriate medical facility or to your home province for further treatment.

What is the difference between emergency evacuation and repatriation?

An emergency evacuation involves transporting patients to a hospital or other medical facility in order to be treated.

Repatriation is a type of evacuation that returns travellers back home, typically after their condition has stabilized and when your treating physician recommends you return to your home province because of your medical condition.

And in a worst-case scenario, if a traveller dies on vacation, World Nomads travel insurance also covers repatriation of remains. It’s not an easy thing to think about, but it does happen from time to time.

What does World Nomads insurance cover for emergency evacuation and repatriation?

Under your World Nomads plan, emergency evacuation is covered if it’s recommended by the attending physician and pre-approved by our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. This benefit could include transportation costs and any related medical services or supplies. If you’re going to be at the hospital for three days or more, it may also include the transportation of a family member or companion to your bedside or the return of a dependent child back to your home.

Emergency evacuation and repatriation typically takes place through a commercial flight. We may cover:

  • One-way economy airfare to return you to your home province in Canada.
  • Fares for additional seats should you need to accommodate a stretcher.
  • Flight upgrade to business class when a stretcher isnt necessary.
  • Where medically necessary, medical air evacuation to a hospital in your home province.
  • Round-trip airfare for a medical escort when a requirement by the airline or when medically necessary.

The key thing to remember is that you must contact us before seeking emergency medical treatment, emergency evacuation or repatriation.

Medical repatriation travel insurance is available for international travel or domestic trips outside your home province. You must be covered under your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the duration of your trip.

What's not covered by emergency evacuation insurance?

Our travel insurance plans do not cover everything. For example, our plans do not provide coverage for any of the following:

  • Any incidents related to drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Unnecessary upgrades or other non-cost-effective options.
  • Participation as an athlete in professional sports or participating in activities you have not listed when you purchased your plan.
  • Travelling for the purpose of securing medical treatment.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions, as outlined in your policy wording.
  • Continuing medical care back in Canada.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

Abdominal pain in Myanmar

On my second day in Burma, I woke up in the middle of the night with intense abdominal distress. I was rushed to the Asia Royal Hospital and immediately taken for evaluation and an ultrasound. I had a large mass in my abdomen and evacuated to Bangkok that evening to see a specialist. I was admitted to Bumrungrad International Hospital, where I stayed for eight days for a battery of tests, including several ultrasounds, a CT scan, and two aspirations of what turned out to be a renal cyst. After a conditional discharge, where I was restricted to rest, I was deemed stable enough to be evacuated. Two days later I was on a flight back to the U.S., where I am now continuing treatment.

Travel Insurance for Delayed Baggage

Learn how travel insurance could help if your luggage misses your flight.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

If you’ve ever been the last one standing at the baggage carousel at an airport, waiting in vain as the empty belt went round and round, you know the sinking feeling that comes with losing your luggage.

While this is one of the most common ways your baggage can become a dearly departed companion, other issues with your baggage can arise too, like baggage delay, damage, and theft.

Our travel insurance may help you when your plans for your bag go awry.

Why travel insurance is your best bet when your bags go AWOL

We know how much your bag means to you while you’re overseas. They often hold all your most precious items, like your journal, your favorite hiking boots and that new something you bought just for this trip. Sometimes all your worldly processions are in those bags! That’s why baggage coverage is your best bet in case your bags go AWOL.

Whether you choose our Standard or Explorer plan, here’s how World Nomads travel insurance may be able to help if your bags go missing or are delayed, lost, or stolen. We offer coverage in case of:

  • Baggage delays by the common carrier
  • Stolen baggage or items (including tech items like computers and camera)
  • Bags that have been lost in transit by the common carrier
  • Stolen passports
  • Damage caused by a carrier

It’s important to read over your policy wording to become familiar with what is and isn’t covered, so there are no surprises should you need to make a claim.

What is not covered?

While World Nomads travel insurance is designed to cover your baggage and personal effects that you take on your trip, the baggage, personal effects and sporting equipment coverage of your travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Travel insurance doesn’t cover certain situations and circumstances, including but not limited to:

  • Accidentally leaving your baggage or personal belongings behind.
  • Stolen bags that were left unattended or unwatched.
  • Electronics that were kept in checked-in baggage.
  • Bicycles and some sporting equipment, particularly while in use.
  • Baggage that has been left in an unlocked vehicle (or left overnight, even when the car is locked).
  • Business equipment.
  • Items that have not been reported to a local authority (police, airline, etc.).

What to do if your bag gets lost or stolen while youre overseas

Had your bag stolen while on the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? Or perhaps it got lost in transit en route to Peru? Bags can lose their way for a variety of reasons. It helps to know how to pick yourself back up again if you find yourself without your stuff while on the road.

If your luggage has been stolen or is lost by your common carrier along the way, there are a few things you need to do to increase the likelihood of your travel insurance covering you. Take a look at this easy-to-follow guide for what to do if your luggage is stolen while travelling. And remember, the first rule of thumb is always to report it.

In addition, if your luggage is delayed more than 12 hours, you may be entitled to reimbursement of the costs for essential clothing and toiletries. Check your policy wording carefully as terms and conditions apply.

Keep your luggage safe

While stealthy snatches and misadventuring bags can happen, there are a few simple tips and tricks you can keep in mind while travelling (and even before you go) to help reduce the risk of losing your most valued processions.

From always packing and carrying your own bags and wearing the right gear, to safeguarding your bags with zip ties, follow these essential tips from travellers on how to keep your belongings safe while you travel.

Baggage Delay in a Delhi Winter.

I arrived in Delhi from Rome. Baggage claim help desk informed me that my bag had been delayed in transit. I was without my bag for almost a week before it was finally delivered to me. Travel Insurance for Trip Cancellation

Learn what's covered if you have booked and paid for your trip and unexpectedly need to cancel.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

If you’ve booked and paid for your trip and need to unexpectedly cancel, the last thing you want is to be out of pocket for non-refundable trip costs. World Nomads travel insurance plans offer coverage for your non-refundable, pre-paid travel arrangements, such as transportation and accommodation expenses if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. So, you’ll have one less thing to worry about and you can start saving for your next adventure instead.

What is travel insurance trip cancellation coverage?

If you must cancel your trip due to a covered reason, there's trip cancellation coverage in both our Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans. We cover your non-refundable prepaid trip costs (up to the maximum limit listed in the schedule of benefits) if you can't travel for a covered reason.

Medical emergencies are one of the most common reasons for trip cancellation. You may be covered if one or more of the following people develops a medical condition as certified by a physician that prohibits them from travelling, or dies:

  • You or your travel companion
  • Your or your travel companion’s immediate family member
  • Your or your travel companion’s business partner.

We know more than illness can stop you from travelling, so we also provide trip cancellation coverage in cases like these:

  • The Canadian government issues a formal advisory against travel to a destination, country or region listed on your itinerary. The advisory must be issued after both the date you paid for non-refundable prepaid travel arrangements and after your policy effective date. Note there is no coverage if an advisory is issued due to an epidemic or pandemic.
  • Your principal residence or destination residence is made uninhabitable by a natural disaster or unintentional act.
  • You or your travelling companion are a victim of a felonious assault within 10 days prior to your trip start date.
  • A strike stops all travel services at your departure point or destination.
  • Your travel supplier files for bankruptcy or completely ceases operations more than 14 days after your policy purchase date and the loss incurred is not recoverable from any other source.

It's important to note that trip cancellation coverage will not be available for an event or circumstance that is known before you purchase your travel insurance. Examples include, but are not limited to: an already-announced strike, an already-named hurricane and a pre-existing medical condition.

When you get a quote, be sure to read through the policy to understand the coverage and what the limits are, and any conditions and exclusions that apply. If you have questions regarding the coverage, please contact us.

What's not covered by travel insurance trip cancellation coverage?

Travel insurance isn't designed to cover everything. Here are some things that are not covered by your World Nomads plan:

Be prepared if you need to claim for trip cancellation

Depending on your trip cancellation claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history
  • Written documentation from the travel provider of reason for cancellation and any refunds

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

Wife's accident cancels Kilimanjaro.

I have to cancel my trip to Tanzania because my wife had an accident and she is waiting for a scan of her back. I should fly to Berlin tomorrow, then Bergen and day after to Africa. It is impossible now because she is alone in the house and I have to take her tomorrow to hospital for another scan. Travel Insurance for Lost, Stolen or Damaged Bags

Canadian residents can protect their baggage and gear with travel insurance

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

We’ve been the ones sitting at the baggage carousel waiting for the bag that never came. Sometimes it’s just delayed, but other times it’s gone forever. Either way, it’s no fun. We hope you never have to deal with that situation, but if you do, travel insurance could come in handy.

What baggage insurance covers

A travel insurance plan that includes baggage coverage could help you with a variety of situations other than just lost bags. Some other things covered by your travel insurance may include:

  • Baggage delays by your airline or other common carrier on the way to your destination
  • Stolen baggage or personal items
  • Stolen sporting equipment
  • Theft or damage to passports and IDs

How travel insurance could help if your bags go missing

If your bags are lost by a common carrier, travel insurance could reimburse you for the depreciated value to replace items such as clothing, cameras, computers, and more (maximum and per item limits apply.) Items that are lost are reimbursed at the depreciated value that is listed in your policy wording. Make sure you have a receipt that shows the price you paid for the item. In addition, it’s helpful to have a picture of what you are packing in your suitcase so you can prove you had that item with you.

How travel insurance can help if your bags are delayed

Sometimes your checked bags accidentally take a different route to get to your destination. Even though they may eventually get to you, you could find yourself waiting for hours to be reunited with them. If your checked bags are delayed for at least 12 hours by an airline or ground carrier, you could be reimbursed for things such as toiletries or a change of clothes (up to maximum limits.)

What to do if your bags get lost at the airport

You’ll need to report the issue to your airline if it was lost by them. For example, if your airline lost bags that you checked, you’ll need to get them to provide you with written evidence of the loss. Find out how they will compensate you and make sure you get it in writing. You’ll also need to keep any relevant tickets, luggage check information, receipts, and other documentation related to the issue. You’ll need these items if you plan to make a claim.

Since checked bags have a way of getting lost sometimes, it can be a good idea to keep your policy number handy, as well as the phone number for the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. We suggest putting the information in your phone or keeping a copy of the paperwork in your carry-on bag so that you have it easily accessible. You’ll need to contact us immediately to let us know if your bag gets lost. Our LiveTravel™ Emergency Assistance team can also start tracking down your bag immediately.

How much does travel insurance with baggage coverage cost?

World Nomads travel insurance offers two options for Canadian residents - the Standard and Explorer plans. The Explorer plan costs more but has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage. For example, the Standard plan offers coverage that includes up to $1,000 CAD for baggage and personal effects that become lost or damaged by the common carrier or stolen, while the Explorer plan offers up to $3,000 CAD for baggage and personal effects that become lost or damaged by the common carrier. The Explorer plan also offers higher maximum limits for things such as baggage delay and loss of sporting equipment by a common carrier.

When you get a quote for travel insurance, you’ll be able to see the costs and compare the coverage of each plan side by side. We encourage you to review both plans so that you can determine the best travel insurance plan for your needs. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

Does travel insurance cover pickpocketing?

Pickpocketing is common in some destinations and is especially prevalent in areas where there’s large crowds. While there’s things you can do to try to avoid being a victim of pickpocketing, it’s unfortunately happened to some of our nomads. If it happens to you, your travel insurance could cover the cost to replace your stolen items (subject to depreciation.) Just make sure you make a police report with the local police as soon as it happens. You will need this documentation if you plan to make a claim.

What should you do if your passport or other travel documents are damaged or stolen?

If your passport, driver’s license, birth certificate, or travel visa is stolen, or accidentally damaged while you’re travelling, your travel insurance could reimburse you for the cost of replacement (up to maximum limits as shown in your policy wording.)

If you’re travelling outside of Canada, you’re going to need your passport to get back home, so  you’ll want to reach out to the Government of Canada’s passport office as soon as possible. You can then start the process of getting an emergency passport. You’ll also need to contact the police and get a written police report about the theft of your passport or other travel documents. Make sure you also contact us to let us know about the loss theft.

What isn’t covered by baggage insurance?

It’s up to you to keep an eye on your bags and try to keep them safe. We know accidents happen, but if you intentionally leave your bags unsupervised, leave them in an unlocked car, or accidentally leave them behind, you wouldn’t be able to claim that on your travel insurance. A few other things that wouldn’t be covered include:

  • Baggage and sporting equipment delayed on your final return flight home
  • Stolen items not properly reported to the authorities
  • Damage or loss resulting from normal wear and tear
  • Items shipped under a freight contract
  • Animals
  • Perishable items
  • Artificial teeth or limbs
  • Eyeglasses
  • Items related to your occupation or profession
  • Antiques
  • Fragile items

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for baggage. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What should I do if the airline loses my bag?

Get written evidence of the loss from your airline, including documentation showing how they will compensate you. You’ll also need to contact us to let us know about the loss. Make sure you keep any relevant tickets, luggage check information, and other documentation related to the issue. You’ll need these items if you plan to make a claim.

  • Why do my items get depreciated?
Travel insurance is about replacing what was lost, not helping you update your cameras or wardrobe. Depreciation happens to match the claim to the item’s current price, not the original value.
  • Will travel insurance pay for my lost sporting equipment?
Yes, sporting equipment that is stolen or lost by a common carrier could be covered by your travel insurance (maximum limits and per item limits apply.) If your sporting equipment is delayed by your airline more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, you could also be reimbursed (up to the maximum limit) if you need to rent sporting equipment while on your trip

I arrived in Delhi from Rome. Baggage claim help desk informed me that my bag had been delayed in transit. I was without my bag for almost a week before it was finally delivered to me. It was cold in Delhi (being winter, December) and my warm jacket was in my bag, requiring that I purchase a jacket and other items of warm clothing that I had not taken in my carry-on.

Travel Insurance for Overseas Medical

Don't let your medical expenses bury you.

We’ve seen some pretty hairy accidents and illnesses, from aneurysms to scooter accidents, and at least one shark bite! When the unexpected happens, our 24/7 emergency medical assistance teams will support you and your family, so you can focus on getting better.

What Overseas Medical Expenses are covered by World Nomads travel insurance for Canadians?

If you’re injured in an accident or suddenly get sick while traveling, and you've bought a policy for the activities you're doing, you can be covered for emergency medical treatment including:

  • Hospitalization
  • Out-patient treatment for medical emergencies, prescribed medicines, X-rays, and laboratory tests
  • Being brought home if medically necessary

We also have 24 hour multi-lingual assistance teams who can guide you to the nearest hospital, set up direct payments to the medical facility where available, and help you navigate local customs. Coverage may depend on your past medical history, what's happened to you and any other conditions, limits or exclusions of cover as described in your policy.

You must contact us before seeking medical attention, emergency evacuation or repatriation. Failure to call may result in limits or denial of claims. If your medical condition prevents you from calling, you must call as soon as medically possible or have someone call on your behalf.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common claims for overseas medical expenses we see where there's no cover include:

  • If you've abused recreational drugs or alcohol
  • That rash you picked up on your last trip (as it's now considered a pre-existing condition)
  • Where you've been acting reckless
  • Non-essential medical treatment, such as routine physical exams (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Jumping on a motorbike without a helmet or license (even if the place you’re in does not require a helmet)
  • Care or treatment that is not payable under your GHIP or any other insurance plan
  • Injury or sickness within 48 hours of your departure date (if you bought your policy after you left home).

For more information check out our articles on overseas medical coverage and adventure sports coverage.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

Monkey Bite!

While visiting the Monkey Forest in Bali, I was bitten by a monkey and blood was drawn. After returning to our hotel we then visited a local doctor the same evening of the bite. I received the first Rabies vaccination and then went to the International SOS office in Bali for an examination. There I received a second rabies shot, and then immunoglobin shots.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about overseas medical insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • Does my insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency! Should you require hospitalization and/or medical evacuation the insurer will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They work very hard to ensure you do not have to pay out of pocket. However, should you require a visit to an urgent care facility, they will not accept any insurance so you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and, upon your claim being approved, be reimbursed for your expenses.
