Hiking Travel Insurance Coverage

Trekking & High-Altitude Insurance Coverage for Canadians

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance:

  • World Nomads offers hiking and trekking travel insurance to help cover medical emergencies, gear loss, and trip cancellations.
  • You can choose a plan and corresponding activity level based on your trek’s maximum elevation, with coverage available up to 6,000 metres.
  • Our plans include emergency medical evacuation coverage if you get injured or sick while hiking in remote areas.
  • We provide hiking gear protection if your equipment is stolen or accidentally damaged during your trip.
  • If your trek is disrupted by illness or injuries (amongst other covered reasons), travel insurance may help cover your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.

Whether you’re trekking to Base Camp or hiking a Canadian mountain range you may want to protect your adventure with World Nomads Travel Insurance. Our travel insurance plans include a range of benefits that could help with everything from stolen bags to unexpected medical expenses.

Why should you consider travel insurance coverage for your next hiking and trekking adventure?

Hiking and trekking can take you off the beaten path—and far from help if things go sideways. From twisted ankles on remote trails to gear stolen from your rental car, unexpected issues can derail even the most carefully planned journey. Travel insurance designed for hikers and trekkers may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your route and altitude level, it’s a smart way to explore confidently—whether you're heading to Patagonia, peaks in Asia, or your local national park.

Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Plan is limited once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels outside of your home province, too.

  • Emergency medical expenses:if you fall and get hurt while hiking, you may need medical help. Our emergency medical coverage for illness or injury may provide reimbursement for the treatment you need.
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation: If your injuries are severe, acute, or life-threatening our plans may cover emergency medical evacuation and transportation to a medical facility best suited for your care, subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Baggage and personal effects protection: Our gear coverage may help with reimbursement of the cost to repair or replace damaged, lost or stolen items, including airline checked bags.
  • Trip cancellation: if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason such as an unexpected illness, we may be able to reimburse your pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations.

What may not be covered?

  • Any alcohol related sickness, death or injury or the abuse of medication, drugs, alcohol or any other toxic substance.
  • Travel within your home province
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • Wear and tear from everyday use of sporting equipment. Gear that is in use is not covered.
  • Hiking or trekking over 6,000 metres.

Nomads tip: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be prepared: we recommend that you check the weather, check your equipment, and if you’re going guided, confirm that you’re using an accredited tour operator.
  • Stay healthy: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. It’s best to be sure you are physically capable of it. Consider asking a doctor before you leave about altitude medication or other helpful prescriptions you can take with you.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases and a loss or theft report. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you need to make a claim.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • What is the difference between hiking, trekking and mountaineering for travel insurance purposes?

The terms ‘hiking’ and ‘trekking’ are usually interchangeable when it comes to travel insurance benefits. Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so travel insurance plans like those from World Nomads offer varying levels of coverage depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.

  • Why should I consider travel insurance coverage for hiking and trekking?

Hiking and trekking adventures vary in intensity—and elevation. That’s why World Nomads offers two different plans, each with the opportunity to add additional activity coverage for higher risk activities. With elevation-based options, you can choose a plan that fits your route, your style, and your ambition.

    • Elevation coverage by plan:
      • Standard Plan – up to 3,000 metres
      • Explorer Plan – up to 3,000 metres
      • Additional activity level coverage – bumps up the coverage to 6,000 metres (additional cost involved)
  • When should I purchase travel insurance if I’m planning an adventure?

Many travellers choose to buy travel insurance soon after booking to access pre-trip benefits like Trip Cancellation coverage, which may reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason (like unexpected sickness or injury). Planning ahead means more protection. However, if you’re already on your trip, you can still purchase travel insurance (certain waiting periods may apply).

  • Would hiking gear and equipment be covered?

Yes, hiking gear and equipment may be covered under the baggage and personal effects benefit of our plans if it's lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged during your trip. Maximum benefit amounts and conditions vary by plan, so be sure to review your chosen plan documents —especially if you're carrying high-value items like trekking poles, boots, or GPS devices. Note: coverage does not include wear and tear or gear damaged during use. Additional terms and conditions apply.

  • Am I eligible to purchase travel insurance from World Nomads?

To be eligible for coverage under this policy you must:

    1. agree that Canada is your country of residence at the time tour policy is purchased and for the full duration of your trip;
    2. be less than 66 years of age at the time your policy purchase date; and
    3. be travelling for a maximum of 365 days.

To be eligible for trip cancellation coverage you must:

    1. purchase this policy prior to your start date; and
    2. have purchased your policy not more than 18 months prior to your start date.

To be eligible for all other coverage under this policy, you must be covered under Your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, your aggregate limit for all emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the full duration of your trip.

  • Does my plan include emergency evacuation coverage?

Yes, our travel insurance coverage includes emergency medical evacuation if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefit may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Medical evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.

Travel Insurance for extended trips

Discover how World Nomads can protect US residents on long-term adventures.

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

Often the best adventures have no end date … that’s why World Nomads has designed flexible travel insurance policies for all types of travelers. If you're looking to travel for more than a week or two, we have travel insurance* that can keep US residents covered for up to 180 days on a single trip. We also offer an Annual travel insurance plan which can cover multiple trips per year, with each trip being up to 45 days in length.

What can travel insurance cover during a long trip?

Our plans come with loads of benefits, depending on the plan you buy. Whether you’re going on a long trip or a short trip, all of our plans may provide cover for:

Our travel insurance plans are designed by travelers for travelers, and we cover more than 250 activities, sports, volunteer and work experiences, including skiing, hiking, scuba diving and more.

Who might want to buy travel insurance for a long trip?

Travelers of all ages might be interested in purchasing a long term travel insurance plan. Here are a few examples:

  • College students going on study abroad who want to travel in between quarters or semesters.
  • Digital nomads making the most of work and play.
  • New retirees heading out to explore the world with their newfound freedom.
  • Families traveling for the summer holidays.
  • Spontaneous travelers (the Annual travel insurance plan might be right for you!)

How long can I travel with long term travel insurance?

Our policies are designed to be flexible … we’re nomads after all! We offer long-duration policies and allow travelers to extend their cover or buy more cover while they’re on the road.

US travelers can buy a World Nomads travel insurance single-trip plan with a maximum duration of 180 days. If you purchase the Annual Plan, you can travel as much as you want with the maximum consecutive trip time of 45 days.

When you get a quote, you can compare our four single trip plans, and one annual travel insurance plan to see which will be best suited for your trip.

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning on exploring the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t fret. You have a couple of options to ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Purchase a new plan: If your plan has expired, you can purchase a new one while you’re still traveling. Just note your coverage takes effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan. Your plan wording will have full details to understand the cover, limits and exclusions.
  • Purchase and track your plans with your World Nomads membership: A free membership gives you access to all of our great content and safety advice. And if you buy insurance with us, your membership allows you to manage and view multiple policies in one place online, making it easy to buy more plans as needed, and access online claims forms. Make sure you log-in before purchasing each new plan.
  • Consider the optional “Cancel for Any Reason” benefit: It’s unfortunate, but it happens: You plan a big trip months in advance, only to have something come up that is now stopping you from going. The trip cancellation benefit may help recover some of the expenses, but a certain qualifying event would have to happen (sickness, natural disaster, etc.) But what if your dog is sick or you break up with your partner or you get a new job? Instead of losing all the money you put down, consider adding on the “cancel for any reason” benefit to your Explorer or Epic travel insurance plan during the time-sensitive period to protect those long trips (and big investments!).

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

All travel insurance plans have exclusions and limitations. Here are some of ours – we won’t provide cover for:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?) Be sure to respect the local laws those of your host countries.
  • If you've taken drugs or overindulged in alcohol.
  • Routine medical treatment (remember it's not regular health insurance; it's for medical emergencies).
  • Ongoing treatment at home.
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period and were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Cancelling your trip due to fear of travel or just changing your mind (unless you purchased the ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit).
*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described. Please carefully read your state specific plan documents for a full description of coverage. Travel insurance is included as part of your travel protection plan which contains both insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services. Material included on this page does not represent, nor is it specific to, United States Fire Insurance Company or travel insurance benefits provided on United States Fire Insurance Company’s travel protection plans.

A True Claims Story

Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

What is the best travel insurance?

We believe the best travel insurance* is the kind that allows you to travel overseas knowing you’re properly covered for your adventure… at the best price.

At World Nomads, we’re travelers too and we know that while some travelers buy insurance to cover them when things go wrong, they’d rather be enjoying a Bellini at Harry’s Bar in Venice or upgrading their room in Bangkok to include air conditioning.

That’s why we’ve designed our travel insurance based on what our travelers said they wanted… flexible online travel insurance that covers you for what you need, when you need it.

What's included in travel insurance?

World Nomads policies include coverage, up to the policy limits, for:

What travel insurance plan is best for you?

We know that no two travelers are alike. Our nomads range from gap year students and backpackers to long-term travelers, retirees, and families. We offer four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic or Annual – you can choose the level of coverage that is right for you. These plans cover different activities and offer different levels of coverage and limits, so review the plans carefully. You can also download and read the full plan wording before you buy. You’ve gotten your PADI certification and now you’re ready to explore beneath the ocean’s surface. From coral reefs in the Caribbean to shipwrecks in Australia, there’s no shortage of divine dive sites around the world. And while calm waters, crystal clear visibility, and a bulletproof dive plan might make for the perfect underwater adventure, accidents can still happen. Our travel protection plans include a range of adventure travel insurance benefits that may help with everything from stolen bags to unexpected medical expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my scuba diving trip?

A slip and fall on the dive boat, decompression sickness, jellyfish stings, and ear barotrauma are just some of the unexpected issues that could derail even the most carefully planned dive trip. Travel insurance and non-insurance services designed for scuba diving may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a way to travel confidently – whether you're diving among the abundant marine life in the Florida Keys or alongside the Great Wall of China (yes, that’s possible!).

Scuba diving travel insurance and non-insurance services for scuba diving: What may be covered?

As divers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover scuba diving while traveling. We also offer coverage for losses related to more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
For decompression sickness and cuts from coral when scuba diving

  2. 24/7 Non-insurance Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation, on or off the water

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
Damaged or stolen diving gear, or lost luggage on the way to you diving destination

  4. Trip Delays, Interruptions & Cancellations
A money-saver if inclement weather throws a wrench into your plans.

Terms, conditions, and limitations apply to all mentioned coverages. Get a quote and compare the plans to see which level of coverage is right for you.

All plans also include several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your trip. These include delayed or lost baggage tracking and delivery, portable health records, and pre-departure telehealth services.

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my scuba diving trip?

World Nomads offers four plans for U.S. residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. Even if your main goal is to go scuba diving, you’ll probably be doing other fun things like sailing or kayaking. That’s totally fine, because you could be covered for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences.

  • The Standard and Annual plans cover scuba diving up to 165 feet/50 meters.
  • The Explorer plan covers more activities, including shark cage diving, cave diving, and serving as a scuba diving instructor or guide up to 165 feet/50 meters. It also includes free diving up to 196 feet/60 meters and has higher limits of coverage.
  • The Epic plan covers everything the Explorer plan covers, plus even more activities – including cave diving up to 196 feet/60 meters and commercial scuba diving up to 165 feet/50 meters. It also has the highest benefit limits of coverage.

What may not be covered when scuba diving?

  • Scuba diving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items
  • Scuba diving or traveling within 100 miles of your home
  • Scuba diving without the proper certification (like PADI or NAUI), unless it is a discovery course with an instructor
  • Diving if your doctor has advised against it
  • Dives that are deeper than your adventure travel insurance coverage allow

Top safety tips we recommend for your scuba diving trip

  • Research your dive company: Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment.
  • Don’t dive without proper certifications: Make sure you’ve gone through the proper coursework through PADI or NAUI based upon the type of dive you’ll be doing. If you don’t have the proper certification for your dive, you may not be covered by your travel insurance plan.
  • Check (and double check) your scuba gear before getting in the water: Make sure everything is working properly and if you’re unsure about anything, let your guide know.
  • Don’t dive alone or swim off on your own: Even if you see something cool underwater, don’t go check it out alone – you and your dive buddy need to stay together. Always know where your guide and buddy are at all times.
  • Keep an eye on your air gauge: Monitor this closely so you can plan your return to the surface accordingly. Always make sure you have enough air to complete your dive.
  • Ascend slowly and safely: Coming back to the surface too quickly can cause serious problems. Make sure to do safety stops at the appropriate depths.
  • Get a good dry bag to hold a copy of the documents showing your scuba diving travel insurance and non-insurance services: If an accident happens, you’ll want that handy – and dry. Make sure you have the phone number for the 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance Team easily accessible, as well as your policy number. You may want to save that in your phone as well.

  • Can scuba diving be covered by World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, scuba diving may be covered under all four plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance. The Explorer plan covers more activities, including shark cage diving, cave diving, and serving as a scuba diving instructor or guide up to 165 feet/50 meters. It also includes free diving up to 60 meters and has higher limits of coverage. The Epic plan covers everything the Explorer plan covers, plus even more activities – including cave diving up to 196 feet/60 meters and commercial scuba diving up to 165 feet/50 meters. • Do I get my money back if I cancel my dive trip?

Trip cancellation coverage is offered by all plans offered by World Nomads, and you may be reimbursed for pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, diving tours, and accommodations if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason. U.S. residents (except those that live in New York) also have the ability to add optional cancel for any reason coverage when certain World Nomads plans are purchased.

  • What happens if my bags are delayed?

When you purchase adventure travel insurance coverage and non-insurance services, baggage coverage is also included. If your checked-in bags are delayed more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, your plan may reimburse you for essential, reasonable items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited. Your coverage also includes non-insurance services that can help track down your bag and get it delivered to you.

So you’re taking the kids this time? World Nomads loves nothing more than seeing our future Nomads exposed to the wonders of the world at an early age, which is why we can cover your kids as dependents on your family plan. We’ll cover up to seven of your kids if you’re brave enough to take them all!

Why should I get family travel insurance?

Besides bickering about who gets the window seat or get the last scoop of ice cream, you may run into a bump or two when traveling with your family. No matter the ages of your crew, travel insurance* to cover the whole family may be a good idea.

Even under adult supervision, children can experience mishaps that can throw a wrench into your plans or require medical attention.

It’s also a good idea to have a contingency plan in case an emergency happens to the caregiver, leaving a child unattended. World Nomads plans may cover transport of your minor children back home, accompanied by an attendant if necessary, if an adult is hospitalized for at least seven days or passes away during the trip.

How can World Nomads Travel Insurance help me and my family?

World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance, designed for travelers by travelers, to help you travel confidently on your next family vacation. Our four plans each offer differing levels of coverage, so it’s important you read plan documents and pick the best one for your trip. Subject to terms and conditions, all our plans offer coverage for:

You can also access safety information and travel guides and videos to help you plan your trip.

Who is covered under a family travel insurance policy?

Parents plus their dependent children, as long as at least one of the traveling adults is a legal guardian of the dependent kids, and you all reside in the same US state.

When you get a quote, be sure to list all dependents who will be traveling with you on the plan to ensure coverage for your whole family.

What is a dependent?

For travel insurance purposes, dependent children are:

  • A person under the age of 25 and primarily dependent on You for support and maintenance. The age limit does not apply to a child who is incapable of self-sustaining employment by reason of mental or physical incapacity.

  • U.S. residents.

  • Unmarried.

  • Traveling with you on the same itinerary.

  • Reside in the same state as you.

If your kids don’t meet any of the above requirements, you can purchase single plans for each traveler who resides in a different state.

Are dependents covered up to the same policy limits?

Yep! Your kids are covered up to the same limits even though they are traveling as dependents. The benefit limits shown on the family plan are the maximum amount payable per person.

What’s not covered by family travel insurance?

Read your plan carefully as there are some exclusions including:

  • If you change your mind (or get in a fight with your loved ones!) you are not covered for cancellation or other expenses incurred. If you think this may be a possibility, you may want to consider purchasing the optional ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit, which can be added on to the Explorer or Epic plan within a time-sensitive period.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies).
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unattended.
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period and were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the covered activities list or agreed by World Nomads.
How do I buy a family travel insurance policy?

All you need to do is enter a few details about yourself and your trip as well as the ages of all your family members and we will automatically generate a quote for a family travel insurance plan.

Once you’ve selected the right level of coverage for you and paid for your plan, you will get instant confirmation of your family travel insurance to your selected email.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about family and travel insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask our customer service team

  • What if one of the family gets sick while traveling?
If you or a member of your family is injured or gets sick while you’re traveling, and you’ve bought the plan for the activities you’re doing, you may be covered for: hospitalization; out-patient treatment for medical emergencies; prescribed medicines, X-rays, and laboratory tests; and being brought home, if medically necessary.

Flexible Travel Insurance for Expats

Learn why expats choose World Nomads for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

With flexible travel insurance that covers more than 250 activities, it’s no wonder expats keep turning to World Nomads for travel insurance for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.

If you’ve left home without travel insurance or your plan has run out while you’re still on the road, don’t panic. World Nomads has got you covered with simple and flexible travel insurance* plans that you can buy online, anytime, from anywhere in the world.

Travel insurance for expats

World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.

There are three main reasons expats keep coming back to World Nomads for their travel insurance:

1. Flexible travel insurance

We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long (up to 180 days for a single trip plan or 45 days for an Annual Plan), or as little, as you need. Note that you do need to come back to your home in the US in order to close out your trip; you cannot keep buying travel insurance plans without returning to the US after the maximum length is up.

2. Accessible online travel insurance even after you’ve left home

All you need is a good internet connection to purchase a plan, no matter if you are home or on the road, to get a travel insurance quote. Answer a few simple questions about your trip and follow the prompts that will outline the coverage and benefits we offer. We offer two types of plans – Single Trip or Annual Travel Insurance. Within our single trip plans, we also have three levels of coverage– you can compare them when you get a quote and select the one that best suits your needs. Then read and accept the terms and conditions, pay for your insurance, and you’re done.

3. All the essentials you need covered, and more...

We designed our travel insurance plans around what our travelers most often claim for and tell us they want.

  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance in multiple languages for a range of services. If you need help (medical, lost bags, crimes, natural disasters, etc.), they should be your first call.
  • Emergency medical expense coverage that may include hospitalization, same day surgery and out-patient treatment, emergency dental coverage, and visits to registered medical practitioners.
  • Coverage for delayed, lost or stolen baggage, gear and sporting equipment.
  • Coverage for your non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses when you’ve had to unexpectedly cancel your trip for a covered reason
  • Mechanical breakdowns or transportation strikes that shut down travel on common carriers for 24 consecutive hours.
  • Coverage for more than 250 adventure activities, sports and experiences, including rock climbing, snowboarding, bungee jumping, hiking and snorkeling.
  • Coverage when your trip is delayed, interrupted or cancelled due to a covered reason.
  • Pre-trip medical support via our non-insurance service partners at Runway Health & FootprintID. If you need vaccines or medicines for your vacation destination, we’ve got your back.

Some of our higher tier plans (Explorer and Epic) also offer coverage for:

  • Rental Car Protection (applicable to state regulations; read your plan to make sure your state is covered).
  • Travel inconveniences, like a ski resort that shuts down due to lack of snow or your cruise misses a port of call due to inclement weather. Note that you must have purchased your plan during the time-sensitive period in order to qualify for this benefit.
  • Pet Kenneling for your furry friend if your travel delay causes them to stay at least six hours longer at their kennel than expected.
  • Trip Exchange if your travel supplier (like a tour company or cruise) changes the dates on you and you are forced to incur extra expenses, or even cancel, as a result.
  • Missed connection coverage for when you arrive too late to make your trip departure (like on a cruise or tour group) and you incur extra expenses to join at a different location (or port).

You can also add “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage to the Explorer and Epic plans, although an additional cost will be incurred. You must add this benefit to your plan during the time-sensitive period of 7 days after you make your first payment or deposit towards your trip. You may want to consider this if you are planning a big trip and have invested a lot of money, or if you are worried something could come up in the future that could cause you to miss it.

Broken glass shards

At 12:00 in the afternoon after a yoga class, I took a large jar of coconut water from the fridge, and accidentally dropped it on the counter and slipped onto the broken glass shards. I slipped while holding a jar. I hit my left wrist on the broken glass shards and had cut wound as a result. I looked at it quickly, saw open flesh flapping, wrapped it in a clean towel and called a taxi to go to the hospital as soon as possible. I had pain and numbness in my right wrist. No neck injury, no head injury, no other injuries apparent.

Travel Insurance for Pregnancy

Learn what is and isn't covered by travel insurance if you're pregnant.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t still see the world! If you’ve already booked travel, or if you want to take a babymoon to enjoy a vacation before your bundle of joy comes along, our travel insurance* plans may help look after you should something go wrong.

What does travel insurance cover for pregnant women?

You may be wondering if you can still get travel insurance if you’re pregnant … and the answer is yes. While travel insurance doesn’t cover routine maternity care, it may cover ‘complications of pregnancy’, as defined in your plan documents. It is important to know and understand the definition of this term, so you know what is (and isn’t covered). The following is directly from World Nomads plans:

Complications of Pregnancy means conditions (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy. These conditions include hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclampsia, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, acute nephritis, nephrosis, cardiac decompensation, and missed abortion. Complications of pregnancy also include non-elective cesarean section, ectopic pregnancy which is terminated and spontaneous termination of pregnancy, which occurs during a period of gestation in which a viable birth is not possible.

Complications of pregnancy do not include Physician-prescribed rest during the period of pregnancy (except due to conditions noted above), false labor, occasional spotting, morning sickness, elective abortion, and similar conditions associated with the management of a difficult pregnancy, not constituting a categorically distinct complication of pregnancy.

If you develop complications of pregnancy, you may have coverage for:

If something does happen when you’re travelling, you can contact the Emergency Assistance team who can refer you to the nearest hospital and help you navigate local customs.

World Nomads plans offer coverage for many other unforeseen circumstances that can derail a trip, such as:

What isn’t covered by travel insurance while pregnant?

It’s important to be aware that any non-emergency expenses caused by or related to your pregnancy aren’t covered, such as routine prenatal care including ultrasounds and blood tests. Other pregnancy events that may not be covered include:

  • Normal labor and childbirth, even if you give birth while traveling.
  • Treatment of other conditions associated with a difficult pregnancy.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions that may be exacerbated by your pregnancy.
  • If you are traveling against the advice of your doctor.
  • If you are medically unable to travel at the time you book your travel arrangements.

Our travel insurance plans don’t cover everything so make sure you read your plan document. If you decide not to travel due to your pregnancy and choose to cancel your trip, you would only be covered (up to plan limits) if you purchased the Explorer or Epic insurance plan as well as the optional cancel for any reason’ coverage, which is available at an additional cost during the time sensitive period, only. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side-by-side and determine which one might be right for you.

If you’re unsure about anything or have questions about how pregnancy might affect your travel insurance coverage, you can contact us.

Can I fly during pregnancy?

That’s up to you to discuss with your doctor but it may affect your travel insurance and whether you’re covered. Your airline might ask for a letter from your doctor confirming your expected due date and whether you’re at risk of any complications.

It is important to check your airline’s policy regarding pregnancy. If you get to the airport and your airline won’t let you fly, you may not be able to claim on your plan benefits, because the airline denying your boarding due to a violation of their company policy is not a covered event under the plan.

*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described.
