Family travel insurance for Canadians

Toddlers or teens in tow? World Nomads covers up to 7 dependents

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

So you’re travelling with tots and teens in tow? World Nomads loves nothing more than seeing our future Nomads exposed to the wonders of the world at an early age  which is why we can cover your entire brood as additions to your family plan. Be sure to list them as dependents when you buy your travel insurance.

What does your coverage offer?

Under the Standard and Explorer Plans, World Nomads offers coverage that’s suitable for families:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Trip cancellation, Trip interruption and Trip delay
  • Baggage loss/theft and Baggage delay
  •  A wide variety of adventure activities (Additional premiums may apply, depending on your activity choices.)

As a Canadian Nomad, your plan also gives you (and your family) access to:

What counts as a dependent?

Dependent children are unmarried and rely on you for support, and are at the time the insurance is purchased:

  • Under 21 years of age; or
  • Full-time students under 25 years of age; or
  • Mentally or physically incapable of self-support, at any age.
  • Foster children must be under your legal guardianship and reside at your address.
  • Dependents must also be travelling on the same itinerary as you to be on the same policy.

Are dependents covered at the same limits as adults?

Yep – no need to worry! Travel insurance isn’t like going to restaurant and ordering kid-sized meals with smaller portions. Your children are covered up to the same limits even though they are travelling under your wing.

Got another question? Just ask World Nomads or contact our customer service team.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy.  It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions.  If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us

How do I buy a family travel insurance policy?

All you need to do is enter a few details about yourself and your holiday as well as the ages of all your family members and we will automatically generate a quote for a family travel insurance policy with both Standard and Explorer options.

Once you’ve selected the right level of coverage and paid the premium, you will get an instant confirmation of coverage and policy wording sent directly to your email.  You must read the policy to ensure you understand the coverage.

Monkey Bite

While visiting the Monkey Forest in Bali, I was bitten by a monkey. After returning to the hotel, I visited a local doctor. I received the first rabies vaccination and then went to the International SOS office in Bali for an examination. There, I received a second rabies shot followed by immunoglobin shots.

Travel insurance when going scuba diving or snorkelling.

Scuba diving tips for your underwater adventure.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Looking to escape the cold of Canada? How does exploring the underwater wonders of the Caribbean's colourful reefs sound? Or, perhaps, diving into the crystal-clear waters of Southeast Asia? Maybe even diving into the wrecks of the Mediterranean? Whatever the destination, there’s no doubt scuba diving offers an unforgettable experience.

Before you dive into the deep end (literally), it’s important to be prepared. From understanding the local dive conditions to purchasing the appropriate scuba diving travel insurance, being ready for your international diving escapade can make all the difference.

What types of dives are covered?

As passionate divers ourselves, we’ve designed our scuba diving travel insurance plans to cover dives from the Great Blue Hole to The Yongala, and we can offer coverage for:

  • Recreational scuba diving, including cavern diving, up to 30 metres.
  • Recreational scuba diving, including cavern diving, up to 40 metres, with payment of an additional premium.
  • Discover or “learn to dive” scuba dives with a qualified instructor.
  • Scuba diving as a paid or volunteer instructor or guide, with the payment of an additional premium.
  • Shark cage diving (non-qualified at surface or qualified to scuba dive to 30 metres).

Special conditions and exclusions may apply. Divers must hold a valid SCUBA diving certification (PADI, SSI or BSAC or equivalent) and follow the relevant association rules and guidelines at all times. Learners must only dive under the constant supervision of a properly licensed diving school and follow their rules and instructions at all times.

If you’re not sure whether something is covered, contact us.

What does scuba diving travel insurance cover?

At World Nomads we offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage for scuba diving, snorkelling, and 250 other activities. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side by side and decide which has the right level of coverage to meet your needs.

When you buy your travel insurance policy, you’ll need to list the activities you plan to participate in while travelling. Level 1 activities – such as scuba diving up to 30 metres – are automatically covered. Level 2 and Level 3 activities – like diving up to 40 metres – require an additional premium. World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Emergency medical: your health and safety are a priority when you’re exploring the ocean, which is why our plans cover emergency medical expenses should you become sick with decompression sickness, get into an accident or otherwise get hurt while diving or snorkelling. This can include use of a hyperbaric chamber, if deemed medically necessary
  • Ambulance transportation and emergency evacuation: Dives that go wrong on reefs are not only unfortunate, they’re also costly –  our scuba diving insurance includes coverage for ambulance transportation to the nearest qualified medica service provider and emergency medical evacuation (subject to approval from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team) to a hospital in your home province when your attending physician and our medical department recommend you return home for medical treatment.
  • Baggage protection: Scuba diving gear isn’t cheap – World Nomads offers baggage protection with up to $3,000 coverage under the Explorer Plan and $1,000 with the Standard Plan for lost, stolen, or delayed items.
  • Trip cancellation: if your dive trip is cancelled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event like a hurricane that results in Canadian Government travel advisory against travel to your dive destination, you may be able to recover your unused/additional travel expenses. This includes if your destination is deemed unsafe by a natural disaster.

Note: To be eligible for maximum emergency medical benefits, you must be covered under your GHIP for the entire duration of your policy. Without GHIP coverage during your trip, emergency medical benefits will be capped at $40,000 CAD.

What’s not covered by scuba diving travel insurance?

While we can offer coverage for a lot of scuba diving events, there are some things we don’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any scuba dive, including cavern diving, that takes you deeper than your current qualification limits, or any dive deeper than 40 metres.
  • Any unaccompanied or solo dive, commercial scuba diving or cave diving.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government of Canada "Do Not Travel” warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to Canada.

Got a question? Reach out to us, we’re always here to help.

Scuba diving tips

Here’s some tips on how you can get the most out of your scuba diving trip, while also staying safe:

  • Make sure you’re physically ready for scuba diving. Consider a medical check-up and obtain a 'fit to travel' approval from your doctor before diving.
  • Before you plunge into the depths, give your gear a once-over to make sure everything’s in tip-top shape. Then, team up with your dive buddy for a thorough check – from tanks to regulators, ensure every piece is secure and dive-ready.
  • For a dive that’s as safe as it is thrilling, stick with top-notch operators – choose companies that’re known for operating licenced, well-maintained sea-vessels, who only hire qualified dive instructors.
  • Move slowly and calmly in with the underwater world – you’re more like to enjoy an up-close and personal experience with the marine residents when you blend in.

Ready to dive off the deep end?

Before you take the plunge, consider comparing our Standard and Explorer plans, or grabbing a quote. If you have any questions, contact us, our team is always here to help.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What if the airline damages my gear
If your diving gear is damaged by the airline, World Nomads may provide coverage for the cost to replace it. You’ll need to claim with your airline first, then provide the airline’s benefits report when you claim with us to make up the difference, up to the policy limits.
  • Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency. If you require hospitalization and/or medical evacuation our emergency assistance team will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They may be able to arrange direct payment with the medical provider. However, if the treatment you receive is from an urgent care facility or walk-in clinic, you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and claim for reimbursement.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be prepared: check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of any instructors and guides – if they aren’t certified then reconsider whether it’s a smart move to go.
  • Get hike fit: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. Be sure you are physically capable of it.
  • Be responsible: Before you start your trek, make sure your chosen trek suits everyone’s experience level and if you’re going guided, that you’re using an accredited tour operator. Wear appropriate safety gear.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you intend to make a claim with on your hiking travel insurance policy.

When you’re ready, head to our website to get a quote, compare our Standard and Explorer plans, and reach out if you have any questions. Happy trekking!

Studying abroad is a great opportunity to learn about the world – and yourself. Ideally your lessons will be of the academic kind, but World Nomads travel insurance* may be able to help if things go wrong.

Am I covered?

Your basic health and travel essentials will most likely be covered through your study-abroad organization. But World Nomads can cover you for a wide range of adventure activities or if you decide to extend your trip (we think you should definitely extend your trip!).

We offer four plans for US travelers to consider, including a potentially cost-effective Annual Plan. All of them offer differing levels of coverage for emergency medical expense coverage, evacuation, cancellation, and baggage, as well as over 250 adventure activities.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about overseas medical insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask our customer service team

  • Do students need travel insurance?
It’s a good idea for students to consider travel insurance for their trips or study abroad programs, as plans offer coverage for unexpected, emergency scenarios while overseas.
  • Can I buy a travel insurance plan if I'm already studying abroad?
Yes, you can be traveling anywhere in the world and still buy a plan. You can purchase it for any duration you choose (from 1 day up to 180 days for single-trip plans, or 45 days-per trip for an Annual Plan). Check the plan wording for details on when coverage begins and ends.
  • What if I get sick while traveling?
If you’re injured or get sick while you’re traveling, and you’ve bought the plan for the activities you’re doing, you may be covered for: hospitalization; out-patient treatment for medical emergencies; prescribed medicines, X-rays, and laboratory tests; and being brought home, if medically necessary. You’ll also have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.

A True Claims Story

I went to the hospital because I felt a fever and upon further testing they found it to be dengue fever. They also found a infection in my liver which made the process of getting better take longer than usual. I stayed in the hospital for 8 days before I was discharged.

Travel Insurance for extended trips

Discover how World Nomads can protect US residents on long-term adventures.

Often the best adventures have no end date … that’s why World Nomads has designed flexible travel insurance policies for all types of travelers. If you're looking to travel for more than a week or two, we have travel insurance* that can keep US residents covered for up to 180 days on a single trip. We also offer an Annual travel insurance plan which can cover multiple trips per year, with each trip being up to 45 days in length.

What can travel insurance cover during a long trip?

Our plans come with loads of benefits, depending on the plan you buy. Whether you’re going on a long trip or a short trip, all of our plans may provide cover for:

Our travel insurance plans are designed by travelers for travelers, and we cover more than 250 activities, sports, volunteer and work experiences, including skiing, hiking, scuba diving and more.

Who might want to buy travel insurance for a long trip?

Travelers of all ages might be interested in purchasing a long term travel insurance plan. Here are a few examples:

  • College students going on study abroad who want to travel in between quarters or semesters.
  • Digital nomads making the most of work and play.
  • New retirees heading out to explore the world with their newfound freedom.
  • Families traveling for the summer holidays.
  • Spontaneous travelers (the Annual travel insurance plan might be right for you!)

How long can I travel with long term travel insurance?

Our policies are designed to be flexible … we’re nomads after all! We offer long-duration policies and allow travelers to extend their cover or buy more cover while they’re on the road.

US travelers can buy a World Nomads travel insurance single-trip plan with a maximum duration of 180 days. If you purchase the Annual Plan, you can travel as much as you want with the maximum consecutive trip time of 45 days.

When you get a quote, you can compare our four single trip plans, and one annual travel insurance plan to see which will be best suited for your trip.

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning on exploring the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t fret. You have a couple of options to ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Purchase a new plan: If your plan has expired, you can purchase a new one while you’re still traveling. Just note your coverage takes effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan. Your plan wording will have full details to understand the cover, limits and exclusions.
  • Purchase and track your plans with your World Nomads membership: A free membership gives you access to all of our great content and safety advice. And if you buy insurance with us, your membership allows you to manage and view multiple policies in one place online, making it easy to buy more plans as needed, and access online claims forms. Make sure you log-in before purchasing each new plan.
  • Consider the optional “Cancel for Any Reason” benefit: It’s unfortunate, but it happens: You plan a big trip months in advance, only to have something come up that is now stopping you from going. The trip cancellation benefit may help recover some of the expenses, but a certain qualifying event would have to happen (sickness, natural disaster, etc.) But what if your dog is sick or you break up with your partner or you get a new job? Instead of losing all the money you put down, consider adding on the “cancel for any reason” benefit to your Explorer or Epic travel insurance plan during the time-sensitive period to protect those long trips (and big investments!).

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

All travel insurance plans have exclusions and limitations. Here are some of ours – we won’t provide cover for:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?) Be sure to respect the local laws those of your host countries.
  • If you've taken drugs or overindulged in alcohol.
  • Routine medical treatment (remember it's not regular health insurance; it's for medical emergencies).
  • Ongoing treatment at home.
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period and were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Cancelling your trip due to fear of travel or just changing your mind (unless you purchased the ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit).
*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described. Please carefully read your state specific plan documents for a full description of coverage. Travel insurance is included as part of your travel protection plan which contains both insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services. A True Claims Story

Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

What is the best travel insurance?

We believe the best travel insurance* is the kind that allows you to travel overseas knowing you’re properly covered for your adventure… at the best price.

At World Nomads, we’re travelers too and we know that while some travelers buy insurance to cover them when things go wrong, they’d rather be enjoying a Bellini at Harry’s Bar in Venice or upgrading their room in Bangkok to include air conditioning.

That’s why we’ve designed our travel insurance based on what our travelers said they wanted… flexible online travel insurance that covers you for what you need, when you need it.

What's included in travel insurance?

World Nomads policies include coverage, up to the policy limits, for:

What travel insurance plan is best for you?

We know that no two travelers are alike. Our nomads range from gap year students and backpackers to long-term travelers, retirees, and families. We offer four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic or Annual – you can choose the level of coverage that is right for you. These plans cover different activities and offer different levels of coverage and limits, so review the plans carefully. You can also download and read the full plan wording before you buy. You can’t upgrade your coverage after you purchase a plan, so it’s important to get this right on the first go.

World Nomads plans offer coverage for up to 180 days at a time with the Standard, Explorer, and Epic plans. And if you plan to take numerous trips during the year, then the Annual Plan could be best for you. It has a maximum trip length of 45 days.
