Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team
The terms ‘hiking’ and ‘trekking’ are usually interchangeable when it comes to travel insurance benefits. Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so travel insurance plans like those from World Nomads offer varying levels of coverage depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.
Hiking and trekking adventures vary in intensity—and elevation. That’s why World Nomads offers two different plans, each with the opportunity to add additional activity coverage for higher risk activities. With elevation-based options, you can choose a plan that fits your route, your style, and your ambition.
Many travellers choose to buy travel insurance soon after booking to access pre-trip benefits like Trip Cancellation coverage, which may reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason (like unexpected sickness or injury). Planning ahead means more protection. However, if you’re already on your trip, you can still purchase travel insurance (certain waiting periods may apply).
Yes, hiking gear and equipment may be covered under the baggage and personal effects benefit of our plans if it's lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged during your trip. Maximum benefit amounts and conditions vary by plan, so be sure to review your chosen plan documents —especially if you're carrying high-value items like trekking poles, boots, or GPS devices. Note: coverage does not include wear and tear or gear damaged during use. Additional terms and conditions apply.
To be eligible for coverage under this policy you must:
To be eligible for trip cancellation coverage you must:
To be eligible for all other coverage under this policy, you must be covered under Your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, your aggregate limit for all emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the full duration of your trip.
Yes, our travel insurance coverage includes emergency medical evacuation if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefit may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Medical evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.

Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

That’s why we’ve designed our travel insurance based on what our travelers said they wanted… flexible online travel insurance that covers you for what you need, when you need it.

World Nomads Travel Insurance for U.S. residents takes effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan. When you get a quote for scuba diving travel insurance and non-insurance services, you’ll need to input where you’ll be traveling.
If you’re hurt while scuba diving, contact local authorities as soon as you’re able to do so for immediate attention. World Nomads Travel Insurance may help reimburse the cost of medical treatment, hospital stays, or even emergency medical evacuation if needed (subject to approval.) Access to a 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance Team is also included for support anytime, anywhere.
Yes, when you purchase scuba diving travel insurance and non-insurance services, you may be covered for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences. So you’re taking the kids this time? World Nomads loves nothing more than seeing our future Nomads exposed to the wonders of the world at an early age, which is why we can cover your kids as dependents on your family plan. We’ll cover up to seven of your kids if you’re brave enough to take them all!
Besides bickering about who gets the window seat or get the last scoop of ice cream, you may run into a bump or two when traveling with your family. No matter the ages of your crew, travel insurance* to cover the whole family may be a good idea.
Even under adult supervision, children can experience mishaps that can throw a wrench into your plans or require medical attention.
It’s also a good idea to have a contingency plan in case an emergency happens to the caregiver, leaving a child unattended. World Nomads plans may cover transport of your minor children back home, accompanied by an attendant if necessary, if an adult is hospitalized for at least seven days or passes away during the trip.
World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance, designed for travelers by travelers, to help you travel confidently on your next family vacation. Our four plans each offer differing levels of coverage, so it’s important you read plan documents and pick the best one for your trip. Subject to terms and conditions, all our plans offer coverage for:
You can also access safety information and travel guides and videos to help you plan your trip.
Parents plus their dependent children, as long as at least one of the traveling adults is a legal guardian of the dependent kids, and you all reside in the same US state.
When you get a quote, be sure to list all dependents who will be traveling with you on the plan to ensure coverage for your whole family.
For travel insurance purposes, dependent children are:
A person under the age of 25 and primarily dependent on You for support and maintenance. The age limit does not apply to a child who is incapable of self-sustaining employment by reason of mental or physical incapacity.
Unmarried.
Traveling with you on the same itinerary.
Reside in the same state as you.
If your kids don’t meet any of the above requirements, you can purchase single plans for each traveler who resides in a different state.
Yep! Your kids are covered up to the same limits even though they are traveling as dependents. The benefit limits shown on the family plan are the maximum amount payable per person.
Read your plan carefully as there are some exclusions including:
All you need to do is enter a few details about yourself and your trip as well as the ages of all your family members and we will automatically generate a quote for a family travel insurance plan.
Once you’ve selected the right level of coverage for you and paid for your plan, you will get instant confirmation of your family travel insurance to your selected email.

With flexible travel insurance that covers more than 250 activities, it’s no wonder expats keep turning to World Nomads for travel insurance for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.
If you’ve left home without travel insurance or your plan has run out while you’re still on the road, don’t panic. World Nomads has got you covered with simple and flexible travel insurance* plans that you can buy online, anytime, from anywhere in the world.
World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.
There are three main reasons expats keep coming back to World Nomads for their travel insurance:
We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long (up to 180 days for a single trip plan or 45 days for an Annual Plan), or as little, as you need. Note that you do need to come back to your home in the US in order to close out your trip; you cannot keep buying travel insurance plans without returning to the US after the maximum length is up.
All you need is a good internet connection to purchase a plan, no matter if you are home or on the road, to get a travel insurance quote. Answer a few simple questions about your trip and follow the prompts that will outline the coverage and benefits we offer. We offer two types of plans – Single Trip or Annual Travel Insurance. Within our single trip plans, we also have three levels of coverage– you can compare them when you get a quote and select the one that best suits your needs. Then read and accept the terms and conditions, pay for your insurance, and you’re done.
We designed our travel insurance plans around what our travelers most often claim for and tell us they want.
Some of our higher tier plans (Explorer and Epic) also offer coverage for:
You can also add “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage to the Explorer and Epic plans, although an additional cost will be incurred. You must add this benefit to your plan during the time-sensitive period of 7 days after you make your first payment or deposit towards your trip. You may want to consider this if you are planning a big trip and have invested a lot of money, or if you are worried something could come up in the future that could cause you to miss it.

I looked at it quickly, saw open flesh flapping, wrapped it in a clean towel and called a taxi to go to the hospital as soon as possible. I had pain and numbness in my right wrist. No neck injury, no head injury, no other injuries apparent.

Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t still see the world! If you’ve already booked travel, or if you want to take a babymoon to enjoy a vacation before your bundle of joy comes along, our travel insurance* plans may help look after you should something go wrong.
You may be wondering if you can still get travel insurance if you’re pregnant … and the answer is yes. While travel insurance doesn’t cover routine maternity care, it may cover ‘complications of pregnancy’, as defined in your plan documents. It is important to know and understand the definition of this term, so you know what is (and isn’t covered). The following is directly from World Nomads plans:
Complications of Pregnancy means conditions (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy. These conditions include hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclampsia, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, acute nephritis, nephrosis, cardiac decompensation, and missed abortion. Complications of pregnancy also include non-elective cesarean section, ectopic pregnancy which is terminated and spontaneous termination of pregnancy, which occurs during a period of gestation in which a viable birth is not possible.
Complications of pregnancy do not include Physician-prescribed rest during the period of pregnancy (except due to conditions noted above), false labor, occasional spotting, morning sickness, elective abortion, and similar conditions associated with the management of a difficult pregnancy, not constituting a categorically distinct complication of pregnancy.
If you develop complications of pregnancy, you may have coverage for:
If something does happen when you’re travelling, you can contact the Emergency Assistance team who can refer you to the nearest hospital and help you navigate local customs.
World Nomads plans offer coverage for many other unforeseen circumstances that can derail a trip, such as:
It’s important to be aware that any non-emergency expenses caused by or related to your pregnancy aren’t covered, such as routine prenatal care including ultrasounds and blood tests. Other pregnancy events that may not be covered include:
Our travel insurance plans don’t cover everything so make sure you read your plan document. If you decide not to travel due to your pregnancy and choose to cancel your trip, you would only be covered (up to plan limits) if you purchased the Explorer or Epic insurance plan as well as the optional cancel for any reason’ coverage, which is available at an additional cost during the time sensitive period, only. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side-by-side and determine which one might be right for you.
If you’re unsure about anything or have questions about how pregnancy might affect your travel insurance coverage, you can contact us.
That’s up to you to discuss with your doctor but it may affect your travel insurance and whether you’re covered. Your airline might ask for a letter from your doctor confirming your expected due date and whether you’re at risk of any complications.
It is important to check your airline’s policy regarding pregnancy. If you get to the airport and your airline won’t let you fly, you may not be able to claim on your plan benefits, because the airline denying your boarding due to a violation of their company policy is not a covered event under the plan.

I unexpectedly became pregnant towards the end of November. I was planning on still going on the trip until my doctor diagnosed me with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. They recommend not leaving the country due to these complications in the first trimester of pregnancy.
