Travel insurance when rock climbing

Check out World Nomads travel insurance plans when rock climbing. Be adequately covered if injuries or extreme weather issues strike.

  • Trusted by:

Ready to conquer new heights? Literally? Aussie explorers have been attracted to rock climbing for centuries, and it’s easy to see why – rocky climbing ticks all the boxes; physical strength, mental focus, (nearly) untouched landscapes, and breathtaking views. Embarking on a rock climbing adventure can be an exhilarating experience, however, amidst the adrenaline rush and excitement, it's important not to forget to research travel insurance…just in case.

What’s covered when rock climbing?

World Nomads offers coverage across two insurance policies (Standard and Explorer) for four different rock climbing activities:

  • Rock climbing (indoor)
  • Rock climbing (outdoor)
  • Rock climbing (bouldering/no ropes/no equipment)
  • Rock climbing (sport climbing/bolted)

Note: some of these activities require package upgrades or specific qualifications. For this reason, we recommend you refer to your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) or contact us before purchasing a travel insurance policy. Please note: soloing/free soloing rock climbing is not covered.

Cover for lost, stolen or delayed baggage

If you’re looking for a location to climb between November and April, check out Krabi province in Thailand – the limestone cliffs have many routes for all skill levels. Keep in mind though, Thailand has some of the busiest airports in the world, and with that comes the possibility of lost baggage. Or even worse your rock climbing gear could go missing in transit or be snatched right under your eyes. If this happens our travel insurance may be able to help.

If you arrive at the airport and your baggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for the cost of essential items (think jocks, socks, and a toothbrush). And if the unthinkable has happened and your baggage or climbing gear is lost or stolen, we may cover the original purchase price to replace the items.

Please note: sporting equipment that is checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight.

Why should I consider travel insurance when rock climbing

It’s no secret that Aussies love a thrill-seeking adventure, and while Australia offers some of the best rock-climbing locations, there’s always an allure to travel abroad and discover new and challenging rock formations to scale. However, travelling overseas and hanging off cliff faces also presents risk. World Nomads could be your ticket to having fun, the safe way.

Here are some of the ways travel insurance could come in handy on your next overseas trip:

Cover for over 150 sports & adventure activities: Yosemite National Park is renowned as a world-class destination for rock climbing. And hiking. And kayaking. And cycling. World Nomads provides travel insurance for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences. While this list might seem exhaustive, it doesn’t cover everything. That’s why you shouldn’t take for granted that your preferred activities will be covered. You can’t upgrade your level of cover mid-way through your holiday, so do consider this wisely.

Cover for stolen gear: Travel insurance can help you continue to ‘rock on’ if someone decides they like your gear more than you do and steals it. Both the Standard and Explorer policies offer coverage for the cost of stolen belongings (up to policy limits).

What’s not covered

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything so understanding what’s not covered is important. There are several situations we can cover you for, but there are also some we just won’t cover.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • World Nomads does not offer coverage for free soloing – so make sure you keep those ropes firmly attached!
  • World Nomads won’t cover you if you overestimate your vertical limit skills and put yourself in dangerous situations – this includes breaking local laws and warnings.
  • Competing at an international event as a national representative.
  • Any remote search or rescue operations to remove you from a life-threatening situation (unless covered by natural catastrophe).
  • Follow the local laws and regulations – whether it’s respecting the local customs or respecting the fragile ecosystems of the beautiful places you’re lucky enough to discover, it’s always important to remember travel insurance doesn’t cover breaking the law.

Key tips for your rock climbing trip

  • Ensure you have a clean bill of health before you go: climbing isn't just a bit of a walk in the park -- you need to be in top-notch form to scale those crags. Don't forget to have a quick check-in with your doc and sort out any necessary vaccinations or medicines, depending on where you're headed. Speaking of general health; make sure you refer to your PDS before leaving, as we often don’t offer coverage for existing medical conditions.
  • Rock climbing can be dangerous – take the time to plan your adventure in detail. It’s important to assess the route difficulty, comparing it to your experience level – because while it’s good to challenge yourself, the outcome won’t be much fun if you realise you’ve bitten off more than you can climb, halfway up!
  • Do you know what likes crags? Rock climbers…and…ticks. Do you know what likes rock climbers? Ticks. Because: yum. Tick bites can cause Rocky Mountain Fever and Lyme Disease, which can result in a hospital trip. It’s always best to do a thorough check of your body and gear after every climb.
  • Check your gear! Safety is paramount when rock climbing, and safety starts with a thorough inspection of all your climbing gear – before, and after every single climb.
  • Rock climbing requires physical strength and ability – we recommend you speak to your doctor before embarking on your journey just to be sure that you’re medically fit for the challenge.
  • Inform a local assistance company and your family of your rock-climbing location and trekking route and policy details.
  • Make sure to use a qualified tour guide if you're rock climbing as part of a group.
  • Check which countries your rock-climbing trip passes through to ensure your policy covers you for that region.
  • For the intrepid rock climber, be aware a higher policy excess applies if you need to be medically evacuated within Nepal.
  • Make sure that you've selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. Get a quote online anytime, anywhere.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Traveller tip: no one plans for a natural disaster, but unfortunately, they happen. If your whole trip or your rock climbing session is interrupted by a natural disaster and you’re forced to extend your stay, our travel insurance may cover the reasonable and necessary costs (up to policy limits).

Traveller tip: rock climbing can get gnarly, which is why doing your research into travel insurance could be a wise decision. Make sure you take the time to understand what you're signing up for, including what happens if you need to be plucked off a mountain or need a bit of patching up. Do your research, back the ropes, and conquer the world – one rock face at a time!

Traveller tip: if your climbing gear is stolen, it’s imperative you get on the front foot by reporting it to the authorities and obtaining a police report. After that, we ask that you contact us to submit a claim. Always keep copies or originals of any receipts in case you need to make a claim for stolen gear and valuables.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

What to do if you can’t go?

What to do if someone at home is sick or injured

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Unfortunately, sometimes things happen; loved ones fall ill, and best-laid plans don’t go to plan. If you find yourself unable to travel because someone at home is sick or injured, our Cancellation Travel Insurance cover helps Kiwis cover the non-refundable portion of their travel expenses. This includes transport, accommodation, tours/experiences, travel agency cancellation fees and frequent flyer points.

Here are the steps you need to take if you find yourself needing to make an online claim:

1. Rearrange or cancel your bookings

If you find yourself cancelling or postponing your holiday due to the illness or injury of a loved one, it’s essential you take immediate action by rearranging/cancelling all pre-paid and pre-booked travel expenses (think accommodation, tours, transportation etc.).

Traveller tip 1: Take time to research all offers, compensation options, and cancellation alternatives available when rearranging/cancelling with your service providers. Some providers can be quite accommodating – especially in unavoidable situations such as illness and injury. Not only is it in your best interest to avoid or minimise your expenses, it’s important to keep in mind that World Nomads will only cover costs within policy limits, and where you’ve taken reasonable and necessary steps to minimise costs as much as possible.

2. Get it in writing

It’s important you collect all the required reports outlining the medical situation affecting your close relative, and therefore your ability to continue with your travel plans. Some reports required include:

  • Doctor or other medical practitioner’s report, confirming the illness or injury
  • Hospital admission report
  • Ambulance report (if applicable)
  • Police report (applicable)
  • Any other applicable documentation

Without supporting documentation we may be forced to deny your travel insurance claim. For full details of required documentation, and policy inclusions and exclusions, please refer to your Policy Document.

3. Keep your itineraries and receipts

If the unforeseen does happen, and you’re forced to stay in New Zealand instead of travelling abroad, make sure you keep all your paperwork. (Think receipts, itineraries, booking confirmations, cancellation confirmations, e-tickets, and vouchers).

Also, make sure to keep all documentation outlining any cancellation/postponement offers you’ve secured and refunds paid to yourself, as we’ll need to see those in order to keep your trip cancellation claim hassle-free.

Traveller tip 2: paid for your travel expenses with frequent flyer or similar air travel points? All is not lost – if you can’t recover the lost points from any other source, World Nomads Travel Insurance may be able to reimburse you for the cost of any equivalent class ticket (up to policy limits). Refer to your Policy Document for full details.

4. What if someone gets COVID-19 and I can't travel?

If your travel plans are interrupted or cancelled because a close relative in New Zealand is hospitalised or dies due to Coronavirus, you may be covered for the reimbursement of your non-refundable travel expenses. We offer Coronavirus coverage for cancellation and trip interruption expenses under our Explorer Plan.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our Coronavirus cover article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

Traveller tip 3: wondering who we deem a ‘close relative’? Check out our article, Am I covered if I need to cancel my trip because a relative is sick/injured? for our definition of a close relative, and more information on what is (and isn’t covered) should you find yourself cancelling your trip because someone at home is sick or injured.

5. Need to know more?

This information may help if things go wrong, and you want to make a claim. All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what’s happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your Policy Document will always have the full details of what you’re covered for.

If you have any further questions about what’s covered and not covered, just ask us.

This is a summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of the plans described. Please carefully read your Policy Document for a full description of coverage. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

The information provided is of a general nature and is provided for information purposes only. It does not constitute financial advice in any form and should not be relied on as a substitute for obtaining professional advice that is specific to your circumstances. What to do if you can’t go?

What to do if you can’t travel because someone at home is sick or injured

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

So, you’ve booked tickets and planned the itinerary, you’re all set for the adventure of a lifetime…then the unexpected happens; someone at home becomes sick or injured and is hospitalised as result, meaning, you’re travel plans are now changing.

Unfortunately, we can’t magically make loved ones better (sorry), but if you’re insured with a World Nomads travel insurance policy, we may be able to take some of the financial sting out of cancelling or rearranging your holiday and remaining in Australia.

Here are the steps you need to take if you find yourself in this situation:

Traveller tip 1: Take time in the first instance to research all offers, compensation options, and cancellation alternatives available when rearranging/cancelling with your transport service providers. Some can be quite accommodating – especially in unavoidable situations such as illness and injury. Not only is it in your best interest to avoid or minimise your expenses, it’s important to keep in mind that World Nomads will only cover costs within policy limits, and where you’ve taken reasonable and necessary steps to minimise costs as much as possible.

2. Get it in writing

We know you’ll no doubt be overwhelmed dealing with the sudden medical situation facing your loved one, which is why we try and make claiming cancellation or trip interruption expenses as straightforward as possible. We may require key documents, including:

  • Doctor or other medical practitioner’s report, confirming the illness or injury
  • Hospital admission report
  • Ambulance report (if applicable)
  • Police report (applicable)
  • Any other applicable documentation

Once you have these reports, you’re ready to make your online claim, 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.

3. Keep your itineraries and receipts

It’s incredibly important that you hold onto all your source documents for your cancelled/postponed adventure – and we mean everything! Receipts, itineraries, booking confirmations, cancellation confirmations, e-tickets, vouchers…the whole shebang!

Also, make sure to keep all documentation outlining any cancellation/postponement offers you’ve secured, and refunds paid to yourself, as we’ll need to see those to keep your trip cancellation claim hassle-free.

Traveller tip 2: Paid for your travel expenses with frequent flyer or similar air travel points? All is not lost – if you can’t recover the lost points from any other source, World Nomads Travel Insurance may be able to reimburse you for the cost of any equivalent class ticket (up to the policy benefit limits).

Travel insurance for a visit to Ecuador

Check out our Travel Insurance plans which may help safeguard you on your trip to Ecuador.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

For such a relatively small country, Ecuador is packed with amazing experiences for the adventurous traveler. From hiking up volcanoes to biking down the Andes, from floating through the jungle to fishing for piranha, thrills are everywhere. And that’s to say nothing of the amazing wildlife waiting to be discovered in the Galapagos Islands!

But along with adventure comes risk, and what if a natural disaster strikes or you suffer an accident far away from the nearest town? When planning your dream vacation, a travel insurance policy may be a good idea to help get you back on course in case an unexpected event means things go awry.

Why travel insurance matters

A once in a lifetime trip to go snorkeling with the sharks, sea turtles and manta rays in the Galapagos means a lot of financial outlay. Travel insurance covering lost baggage and medical emergencies can help protect this investment if the unexpected happens.

A World Nomads travel insurance policy may provide cover for:

What should I look out for when traveling to Ecuador?

If it’s relaxed beaches or snow-capped mountains you’re after, Ecuador has everything to make a visit the best vacation ever! But things might not go according to plan and knowing that you may be able to resolve financial, medical or logistical problems through your travel insurance policy is a great comfort. Some of the unexpected events that we may be able to help you with include:

Delayed or lost baggage

Even though Brazil and Ecuador are close neighbors, airline companies can still manage to mislay or lose your baggageIf this happens, make sure that you follow all the correct reporting procedures at the airport and World Nomads may be able to provide you with reimbursement for a change of clothing and personal items until things get sorted.

Trip cancellation and trip interruption

With so much to do in Ecuador, you’ve probably spent a long time making travel arrangements. But if something unexpected, such as an illness or an accident, happens just prior to departure, or even during your trip, your travel insurance policy may be able to help recover some of your losses.

Stolen personal effects

The bigger cities such as Quito and Cuenca provide a fascinating mix of indigenous and Spanish history and culture, including one of Latin America’s largest outdoor markets. But if you’re pickpocketed while browsing the local handicrafts, our round-the-clock hotline may be able to point you to the local police station and help you obtain temporary documents. We can also assist in getting funds wired over from your family back in Brazil.

Overseas emergency medical insurance and cover for Coronavirus-related events

If you injure yourself on a hike to the famous crater lakes or on a whitewater rafting expedition from the mountains into the jungle, our 24/7 emergency assistance team can help you find the nearest medical center. If the injury is serious, World Nomads may also be able to help arrange for emergency evacuation and repatriation back to Brazil.

Unfortunately, the effects of the pandemic are still a part of our lives, so if you fall ill with a Coronavirus-related medical problem, your insurance may be able to help with hospital stays and medication.

Cover for over 150 activities and sports when in Ecuador

World Nomads has developed travel insurance for the adventurous traveler with cover for more than 150 exciting sports and activities. With amazing new experiences being developed in Ecuador, such as high altitude ziplining and swings flying out over canyons, it is important that you read through the different policies – Standard, Explorer and Explorer Plus – and decide which one is right for the kind of vacation you plan on taking.

What's not covered?

Of course, no insurance policy can cover absolutely everything, and there are a number of things that World Nomads will not provide assistance or reimbursement for. These may include:

  • Taking part in sports not covered by the policy. Always check what is and isn’t covered before taking out a policy and before signing up for a new radical sport.
  • If you haven’t taken proper care of yourself or your belongings. So if you’ve left your things unattended while enjoying Quito’s nightlife or following the iguanas down the beach in the Galapagos, we won’t be able to cover you.
  • Treatment for pre-existing medical conditions or if your trip has been planned specifically to receive specialist health care.

Of course, this is only a brief guide to insurance while traveling in Ecuador. So before heading off to the “center of the world,” please feel free to contact us for more detailed information on the different policies and cover available.

Esportes e Atividades de Aventura

Seguro Viagem criado sob medida para o brasileiro aventureiro.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

World Nomads covers more than 150 activities and sports, and if it’s not on the list you can contact us and we’ll let you know if we’ll cover it.

You can read more about coverage for some specific activities, or select your Country Of Residence and click here to see the activities covered by the plans available to you.

We offer cover for:

  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance
  • Overseas medical assistance
  • Cancellation

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

  • Surf terrestre
  • Stand-up paddle surf (SUP)
  • Windsurf
  • Sandboard
  • Kiteboarding
  • Wakeboarding

Travel insurance when visiting Chile and Argentina

Say hola to Chile and Argentina in style. Explore both countries knowing you are covered by World Nomads if things get too hot to handle.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Chile and Argentina are known for their natural beauty, warm and friendly people and passion for football and tango. When traveling around Argentina and Chile, you’ll find activities aplenty and natural attractions that need to be seen to be believed. Try trekking and camping in Patagonia, sip some vino at wineries in Salta and Mendoza, or go stargazing in the Atacama Desert (the driest place on Earth outside of the poles).

No matter your plans, consider travel insurance to protect yourself and your belongings against unforeseen circumstances.

What's covered

With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance when you book your trip from home or while you're already traveling around Chile and Argentina. Our plans offer coverage (up to the benefit limits) for:

Make sure you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. We offer two types of plans, Standard and Explorer, depending on the amount of coverage and range of activities you need.

Adventure and sports cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences

Chile and Argentina offer outdoor adventures for all types and ages of travelers. Some highlights include:

  • Trekking and hiking in Torres del Paine National Park.
  • Rafting and kayaking through the Chilean Lake District.
  • Whale watching and spotting the penguins and other wildlife in Puerto Madryn.
  • Taking in the views in Bariloche while horse riding with the Gauchos.
  • Escaping to Easter Island to take in the sights and historical significance of the Moai.

World Nomads offers travel insurance coverage for more than 150 adventure activities and sports. Your plan may have specific conditions, for example, height limits for trekking and depth limits for SCUBA. Check our activities list in this article and read your full policy wording. If you have any questions, please reach out.

Around the clock support for unexpected medical emergencies

Argentina and Chile are amongst the most-visited adventure travel destinations in the world. Despite your best efforts to stay safe and well, injuries and illnesses can happen. Travel insurance can help if you get injured or sick and need urgent medical assistance.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can get you help on the ground when you’re injured or sick, whether you need to visit a doctor or need an ambulance transfer to a hospital that can treat your condition.

Get in touch with the emergency assistance team before undergoing any medical treatment; you may need pre-authorization before undergoing medical procedures or where medical evacuation is required.

Crime and theft in Chile and Argentina

While Chile and Argentina are considered relatively safe tourist destinations, petty thieves and pickpockets frequent some of the most popular tourist hotpots like La Boca, and other parts of major cities like Buenos Aires and Santiago. When in crowded areas in any Chilean or Argentinian city, always maintain a sense of awareness of your surroundings.

The safety precautions you should take in Argentina and Chile are essentially the same as anywhere else: don’t take unlicensed taxis, don’t wander around alone at night, and avoid calling too much attention to yourself, including wearing flashy jewelry.

Motorcycle robberies - called ‘motochorro’ in Argentina – are common. This is where two people on a motorcycle grab your bag or whatever is in your hand as they pass you and take off.

In Chile, large-scale demonstrations sometimes occur in Santiago and other cities. Demonstrations can take place with little or no notice, and often result in disruptions to transportation, including service on public buses and the Santiago Metro.

It’s important to keep a close eye on your belongings at all times while you are traveling. A backpack stolen from an unlocked car or a phone left unattended then stolen from a public bathroom are not likely to be covered. If you have been the victim of theft, you’ll need to report it to the local police or relevant authority as soon as possible.

Traveler tip: make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with – passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets – and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.

What's not covered

Here are some of the things we don't provide cover for:

  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies).
  • Participating in any activity as a professional athlete.
  • Baggage loss without a loss or theft report, or theft from an unattended vehicle (even if it was locked).
  • Travel restrictions at your trip destination or warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State.
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents or other relevant source

American travelers often consider the biodiverse Galapagos Islands to be the trip of a lifetime.

Emergencies can affect even the best-planned trip: natural disasters, strikes, unexpected illness and theft are just a few things that can derail your travels. You should consider travel insurance in case you need to recover losses resulting from unforeseeable events.

What should I look out for when traveling to Ecuador?

A travel insurance plan that includes trip cancellation and interruption coverage can help protect your trip investment; baggage coverage can help you recoup some costs in case of bag delay or loss; and emergency medical can help if you get sick or injured while on the road.

World Nomads offers two plans to choose from: a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan. The Standard Plan includes a range of benefits such as overseas emergency medical, baggage delay, trip cancellation and coverage for more than 150 activities. Our Explorer plan includes everything in the Standard and offers some additional benefits along with higher benefit limits. Travel insurance does not cover everything so be sure to read your policy wording to make sure it meets your needs.

Trip cancellation and trip interruption

World Nomads Travel Insurance may cover trip cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances. If there’s a death in your immediate family, or if you or a close family member becomes sick or injured and a doctor says you can’t travel to Ecuador, travel insurance may reimburse any non-refundable, prepaid trip arrangements.

While you’re on the road, a World Nomads policy can provide important benefits. If you need to cut your trip short due to an emergency back home, your trip interruption benefits may reimburse the costs for your return trip home plus any forfeited prepaid, unused, non-refundable trip expenses up to the limits shown in your policy documents.

For example, if you paid in advance and hired a naturalist for a private tour in the Galapagos, and you have to depart for a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for this non-refundable and unused trip expense.

When filing a claim for either cancellation or interruption, you will need to submit documentation for all non-refundable, prepaid trip costs and associated expenses.

Overseas emergency medical coverage

Your American health insurance is unlikely to be accepted in Ecuador. If you become sick or suffer an accidental injury while traveling in Ecuador without overseas travel coverage, any emergency medical or dental costs (or even worse, emergency evacuation back to the U.S.) will be at your expense.

Accidents and illness can happen on vacation, from food poisoning to twisting your ankle on the cobblestones in Quito or getting in the way of an angry sea lion on San Cristobal. A travel insurance plan which offers cover for emergency overseas medical expenses may help in unexpected situations.

As an American policyholder, you may have coverage for some COVID-19-related events. For details on coverage available to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article.

Access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team when you need help

Having a medical emergency while traveling can be scary, but with a World Nomads travel insurance policy, you are not alone. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help you find appropriate medical care and offer translation services, liaise with doctors and even arrange upfront payment if required.

Some of the best sites in Ecuador are remote. This is where our Emergency Assistance Team can help arrange emergency evacuation to the closest medical facility or repatriation back to the U.S. when medically necessary.

Delayed, lost, or stolen baggage

If you’re checking a bag, there’s always a chance it could take a detour en route to Ecuador. For example, if your itinerary is Chicago to Miami to Quito, and your bag is lost or delayed, your baggage delay benefits may apply.

Reimbursement may be available for personal effects if your checked baggage is delayed or misdirected by an airline carrier for more than 12 hours. Refer to your policy for complete details.

Lost or stolen baggage and belongings may also be covered, for example, a phone swiped from your bag in a crowded Quito market, or a bag permanently lost by an airline (with travel insurance cover being secondary to airline reimbursement).

To keep your belongings safe, use a concealed money belt or cross-body bag to hold your travel documents, valuables and money. It’s also a good idea to be mindful of your surroundings, especially in busy tourist areas.

If your bags or belongings are damaged or stolen, file an incident report with local authorities or your airline immediately. Where theft has occurred, this must be reported to the police. You’ll need this documentation and any relevant receipts when you make a claim.

Coverage for 150+ activities and sports when in Ecuador

Ecuador boasts no shortage of opportunities to get active, from mountain biking the legendary Mama Rumi trail to rafting on the Quijos River. Surfing, snorkeling and hiking are just a few of the activities on offer in the Galapagos. World Nomads offers travel insurance coverage for more than 150 adventure activities and sports.  Read your policy documents carefully to ensure your chosen activities are covered.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything – so make sure you know what you’re covered for. Some things we don’t cover include but are not limited to:

  • Losses caused by negligent policyholder behavior, so no selfies in roped off areas or riding a scooter without a helmet.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
  • Not following orders of your treating physician or Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Participation in activities or sports not listed in the plan you have purchased.
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unattended.

This is a summary of coverage only. Travel insurance has terms, conditions, limits and exclusions. Read your chosen policy carefully, and please reach out if you have any questions about what’s covered and what’s not. We’re happy to help.
