My grandmother suffered an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage after having a fall and was subsequently placed in palliative care in November. I received a phone call to return home as my grandmother only had a few days to live according to the doctors. I returned home, and she passed away. I then recommenced my travels after her passing and funeral.

Bali is renowned for its surf scene, spiritual vibe, and mouth-watering food, so it’s easy to see why Australians flock to Bali every year. Whether it's covering medical emergencies, lost luggage, or unexpected cancellations, travel insurance may help protect you when embarking on your Bali escape.

If you or anyone in your party gets sick or injured and you need to cancel your holiday plans, we may cover the non-refundable travel expenses. Please note that the traveller must have already been issued a traveller’s Certificate of Insurance from World Nomads to have cancelation coverage available to them.
We cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences including trekking, rafting or surfing, which are just some of the activities tourists seek out in Bali. But we don’t cover everything. Many activities also have specific terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions you should read up on. An upgrade for certain sports may be required. Check your policy for details.
If your luggage gets damaged or stolen en route to Bali or during your travels, you may be able to claim the unexpected costs incurred as a result. And if your luggage is delayed for more than 24 hours, you may be entitled to replacement costs for your essential clothing and toiletries. It’s important to read your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully.
If your island time is thrown into chaos by a volcanic eruption, or you’re involved in a scooter accident, you can make a claim. If a volcano wreaks havoc with flight schedules, we understand that you may want to cancel your trip rather than vacation in an ash-affected area. If you're already in Bali, we may cover your exit. The use of scooters/mopeds comes with a caveat – you must have the appropriate licenses and add it as an activity when you buy your policy. Terms and conditions apply.
If you come down with Bali Belly after drinking contaminated food or water or are unfortunate enough to injure yourself in the surf, your policy may cover you for medical expenses. If required, you can get transported to a medical facility suited for your care, subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. Limits apply.

From high elevation trekking in the Himalayas to wildlife safaris in Chitwan, learn how travel insurance for Nepal could help American travelers.
As featured in:
At a glance:
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Nepal? Snow-capped mountains, Buddhist temples, and a welcoming, friendly culture all come to mind for us. Travelers also come to search for tigers and rhinos on safari in one of Nepal’s national parks, join a meditation retreat, relax in Pokhara, stay with a local family in farming villages, experience a religious ceremony or cultural festival, and sample Nepalese dishes like momos and dal bhat. Whatever your dream vacation looks like, Nepal is a place of endless adventure and rich culture.
With this much diversity, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Americans in Nepal. We’ve had the best time in Nepal, but international travel can sometimes involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote for travel insurance* for Nepal before you set forth on your journey.
World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like scams or bad weather.
Travel insurance for Nepal can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as an injury sustained while hiking on the multi-day Manaslu Circuit or one of Nepal’s other great treks.
We have four plans to choose from for different types of travelers and adventures. You might notice that our travel insurance plans for Nepal ring in at a higher cost than our insurance plans for other destinations. This is due to the inherent risk of high altitude climbing, which is one of the main reasons our nomads head to Nepal.
Whether you’re planning to hike to Everest Base Camp or go white water rafting on Trishuli River, World Nomads travel insurance covers Americans for over 250 activities in Nepal. Day hikes and multi-day treks in the Himalayas, safari excursions in Chitwan, and paragliding in Pokhara are all covered under travel insurance for Nepal too.
It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. Once you have your vacation in place, read up on different plans to find the one best suited for the activities and adventures you have planned on your trip to Nepal. Not all activities will be covered by your plan. For example, if you’re eager to explore the Himalayas, hiking up to 19,685 feet, which even covers Everest Base Camp at about 17,600 feet-- is covered under all plans.
However, if you’re feeling daring and want to try spelunking, consider upgrading to the Explorer or Epic Plan for increased coverage.
In Nepal, the healthcare system may not be what you are familiar with back home. It can be particularly difficult to access reliable health care in rural areas, especially remote regions of the Himalayas. You can protect yourself from emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for Nepal.
In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.
Travel insurance for Nepal also may cover medical evacuation and repatriation insurance, if it’s required for your medical treatment. In the event that you need an evacuation flight from the mountains due to altitude sickness, you must receive approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Teams first. Without prior approval, you will not be reimbursed for the cost of the flight. The emergency assistance team can also help you determine whether your injury or illness qualifies for a trip down the mountain. Some local companies might scam you into believing your injury is worse than it is to drive up costs.
Nepal is a stunning destination for adventure and cultural experiences, but there are some things to be aware of when visiting. Travelers sometimes can encounter scams that can derail your plans and impact your trip.
One common scam travelers to Nepal have encountered is an evacuation and helicopter scam. Trekking companies may offer a cheap trekking excursion but manipulate you into signing a form agreeing to helicopter evacuation. It’s helpful to do some advance research on potential trekking companies and read reviews to ensure the company you’re trekking with is trustworthy and legitimate. Some evacuation companies unrelated to a trekking company may also try to scam you with unsafe rides down the mountain. It is for this reason that we require you (or your travel buddy) call the 24/7 emergency assistance team if you need to be evacuated.
Another potential scam is with taxis. If you grab a taxi off the street, either insist they use the meter or agree on a price beforehand, to prevent them from driving long routes or pretending that the meter is broken to drive up the costs. You also might encounter people on the street offering to show you around and then demanding money for their tour guides services. Nepal is generally a safe and welcoming country and using common sense can go a long way to help you avoid scams.
Whether the airline lost your luggage, or your purse was stolen, lost bags can happen during travel. Did you land in Kathmandu but your bag—packed with your hiking boots and trekking gear—didn’t?
If your bag doesn’t show up at baggage claim at the same time you do, contact the airline first. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact the Delayed or Lost Baggage Tracking and Delivery service, which is our non-insurance service partners. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call so you can file a lost luggage claim.
Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable expenses up to plan limits.
We never anticipate natural disasters interrupting our trip to Nepal, but they can happen. Earthquakes are a potential risk, which can also trigger avalanches in the mountains. Monsoon season typically hits from July through September in Nepal, and heavy rains have been known to cause extreme floods and landslides. Storms and natural disasters are impossible to predict so the best thing you can do is protect yourself with travel insurance for Nepal.
If you bought your travel insurance plan prior to a natural disaster developing into a major event, your travel insurance for Nepal may provide cancellation protection if you are unable to occupy your destination residence because of a natural disaster.
Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can also help protect you in case of emergencies back home in America. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused (subject to plan limits) hotel expenses or airfare that you can no longer use.
As much as you may have planned each detail of your Nepalese adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the American government’s safety warnings for Nepal before you leave. Up-to-date warnings-- including weather advisories and political situations-- will be listed on the website.
It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens. Learning a few Nepalese phrases will go a long way too.
Finally, we recommend checking out our travel tips for Nepal, to help prepare you with some basic etiquette to respect local culture. You may also want to read up on some extraordinary experiences for some inspiration and read our packing list tips, to make sure you’re prepared for your trek.

As featured in:
From Dubrovnik’s medieval walls to the islands of Hvar and Korčula and the waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia packs coastline, culture and natural beauty into one fun trip. Dubrovnik’s Old Town, better known to many as King’s Landing from Game of Thrones, is a must-see for its dramatic setting and sea views. Along the Adriatic, historic towns meet clear blue water, while inland, national parks and quieter regions invite travelers to slow down. With short distances and easy ferry connections, hopping between cities, islands and nature is easy. Purchasing a travel protection plan can help set you off for Croatia with confidence, knowing you’re prepared for the unexpected.
Choosing the right travel protection coverage depends on your trip type and planned activities. Each of our four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – offers different coverages and benefit maximums.

Ready for some outdoor excitement? Croatia is made for it. Scuba dive in the clear Adriatic waters to explore shipwrecks and underwater caves, or kayak past cliffs and coves around Dubrovnik and the islands. Along the coast, cliff jumping is a popular way for thrill seekers to cool off, and you can sail between Hvar and Korčula for breathtaking scenery, swimming and snorkeling. Hiking trails and waterfalls await at inland national parks like Plitvice and Krka, while river canyons near Omiš are where to go for rafting, kayaking and ziplining. For a change of pace, explore Croatia by bike or on horseback, and be sure to head into the mountains of Biokovo or Vidova Gora for spectacular views.
No one likes imagining the worst, but if you do get sick or have an accident that sends you to the hospital, you’ll be glad you purchased travel protection before you left home. Had a spill cliff jumping along the Adriatic coast? Had an accident on a winding road? Ate some dodgy seafood got a nasty bout of food poisoning? Emergency assistance is a phone call away. All World Nomads plans include non-insurance services like portable health records. This enables medical staff to access your records 24/7. Having that information available may be critical if you experience an unexpected medical emergency while travelling.
No matter how good of a time you’re having, things can happen that mean you have to finish your trip early or you’re unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. If you get injured or sick while you're traveling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip. World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage that may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if your plans change for a covered reason.
The best trips are often the ones you’ve planned months in advance, but you can’t predict the future and unexpected situations can sometimes happen before you even set off. Trip cancellation coverage is included in all single-trip and annual travel protection plans offered by World Nomads and gives you the opportunity to cancel your trip before you depart – but only for covered reasons. Optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to cancel for any reason that’s not otherwise covered by your plan. Split up with your partner? You can cancel your trip. Sick dog? You can stay home. Change your mind about traveling? There’s no judgment here. Just make sure you purchase the Cancel For Any Reason benefit within 7 days of making your first trip payment (like booking a hotel or flight) and remember to cancel no later than two days before your departure date. Additional cost, terms and conditions apply; not available to New York residents.
Nothing gets a trip off to a rocky start quite like arriving in Croatia without your bags. If your checked luggage is lost or delayed, travel insurance benefits may help reimburse you for lost items. Keep original receipts for any personal items you buy – like a toothbrush or a change of clothes. The first step is always to report missing luggage to your carrier and check what compensation they may provide. Travel insurance benefits for lost, damaged, destroyed, stolen or delayed bags are included in all World Nomads plans. Also, our non-insurance service included in every plan assists with tracking and delivering missing checked bags.
Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for Croatia. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.
Croatia is generally safe for travelers, with low levels of crime. Petty theft can occur in busy areas, so stay aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure. Follow US Department of State travel advisories*. You may want to consider travel insurance for those unexpected situations that arise.
Travel insurance isn’t mandatory, but it’s strongly recommended. Benefits for accidents, medical emergencies, cancellations, delays and lost luggage can help protect you against unexpected costs. Whether you’re in a major city or off adventuring in a more remote location, it’s reassuring to know you can get the help you need – especially when it comes to an accident or sudden illness. All World Nomads plans for US residents include insurance benefits and additional non-insurance services like access to pre-trip medical support. A telehealth consultation can help you with a customized medical plan based on your destination. This may help you prepare for health concerns before you go and the best ways to avoid travel-related illnesses.

What Canadians need to know before travelling to Europe
As featured in:
Europe brings together a wide range of cultures, landscapes and ways to explore in a relatively compact region – little wonder it’s such a popular destination for Canadians. From the iconic cities of Italy and France to the alpine scenery of Switzerland and Austria, and the coastlines of Spain, Portugal and Greece, each country offers an experience all its own. With well-connected transport and short distances between destinations, it’s easy to combine multiple countries in one trip. No one expects things to go wrong while they’re away – but if they do, it helps to know you’re covered.
Choosing the right travel insurance coverage depends on your trip type and planned activities. We offer four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different coverages or levels of coverage.

If you’re all about outdoor adventures, Europe has you covered. Ski the slopes of Austria’s Alps or snowshoe in Chamonix, France. Hike dramatic trails through Switzerland or take on long-distance routes like Spain’s Camino de Santiago. Along the coast, surf in Portugal, kayak along Croatia’s Adriatic shoreline or sail between the Greek islands. Prefer two wheels? Cycle through Tuscany’s rolling hills or tackle mountain routes in the French Alps and feel like you’re riding the Tour de France. However you like to stay active, Europe offers plenty of ways to get out there.
No one likes imagining the worst, but if you do get seriously sick or have an accident that sends you to hospital, you’ll be thankful you purchased travel insurance before you left home. Hit by a car crossing the street in Rome? Took a tumble on the ski slopes of Austria and ended up in hospital? Went out for tapas in Madrid and ended up with food poisoning? Emergency assistance is a phone call away.

Optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to cancel for any reason that’s not otherwise covered by your plan. Broke up with your partner? You can cancel your trip. Sick dog? You can stay home to care for your fur baby. Change your mind about travelling? There’s no judgment here. Just make sure you purchase Cancel For Any Reason insurance cover within 15 days of making your first trip payment (like booking a hotel or flight).
If you get seriously sick or injured but you’re far from appropriate medical facilities, emergency evacuation and repatriation insurance can help get you the care you need. It may cover, up to the policy limits, the cost to get you to the closest appropriate medical facility or to your home province for further treatment. Under your World Nomads plan, emergency evacuation may be covered if it’s recommended by the attending physician and pre-approved by our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. This benefit could include transportation costs and any related medical services or supplies. If you’re in hospital for three days or more, it may also include the transportation of a family member or companion to your bedside or the return of a dependent child back to your home.
No matter how good of a time you’re having in Europe, things can happen that mean you have to finish your trip early or you’re unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. If you get severely injured or sick while you're travelling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip. World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage that may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if your plans change for a covered reason.
Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for Europe. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.
Europe is generally safe, with well-developed infrastructure and healthcare. Petty theft can occur in busy cities and tourist areas, so stay aware of your surroundings and keep valuables secure. Check for any Canadian government advisories before you travel and consider travel insurance.
Travel insurance isn’t mandatory, but it’s strongly recommended. Cover for accidents, medical emergencies, cancellations, delays and lost luggage can help protect you against unexpected costs. Whether you’re in a major city or off adventuring in a more remote location, it’s reassuring to know you can get the help you need – especially when it comes to an accident or sudden illness.
You can make a claim online 24/7. Have your documents and receipts handy to upload, and get started. If you get stuck, you can call us collect on +1 416 646 3723 or send an email to worldnomads@travelguard.com and we will assist you with your claim.
No matter where you are in the world, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance partners at Travel Guard are ready to help – 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Whether it’s a medical emergency, stolen gear, missing bags, or a natural disaster, they’re the first call to make. Need a translator? They can help with that too.
When you call, you’ll be asked if you are experiencing a travel emergency. If you are having a medical emergency, you’ll be connected with Emergency Assistance right away. If your situation is not urgent and you are calling outside of normal business hours, you’ll be able to leave a message and be called back.

Travel advice for Canadians visiting Africa
As featured in:
From the wildlife-rich plains of Kenya and Tanzania to Morocco’s souks and desert landscapes, Canadians have a habit of falling under Africa’s spell. Set out on safari in the Serengeti or Maasai Mara, where wildlife encounters on early morning game drives will take your breath away, or track gorillas through the forests of Rwanda and Uganda for an equally awe-inspiring experience. In Namibia, vast desert scenery stretches to the horizon, while in Egypt, ancient history unfolds along the Nile. Getting around can take time, but that’s part of the experience. Flights, guided tours and overland trips connect regions you’re unlikely to be able to visit all in one trip – but we’re guessing you’ll be back. While you don’t expect things to go wrong, if they do, it helps to know you’re covered.
Choosing the right travel insurance coverage depends on your trip type and planned activities. We offer four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different coverages or levels of coverage.

Tracking wildlife on foot or horseback in South Africa or Zambia adds an exhilarating edge to a classic safari, while in Tanzania and Kenya, hot air balloon rides deliver sweeping views at sunrise. If you’re up for a challenge, summit Mount Kilimanjaro or trek into the forests of Rwanda and Uganda to encounter mountain gorillas in the wild. Namibia’s vast deserts are made for sandboarding and 4WD adventures across the dunes, and in Botswana, you can canoe the Okavango Delta. In and around the water, dive with sharks off South Africa’s coast, snorkel coral reefs in the Seychelles or raft sections of the Nile in Uganda.
No one likes imagining the worst, but if you do get seriously sick or have an accident that sends you to hospital, you’ll be glad you purchased travel insurance before you left home. Had a car accident in Johannesburg? Fell off a horse on safari and ended up in hospital? Ate dodgy biltong and got a bad bout of food poisoning? Emergency assistance is a phone call away.

The EES is a new automated border control system designed to modernize and enhance how travellers enter and leave the Schengen Area.
Countries that are taking part in the EES are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
