Are dependents covered at the same limits as adults?

Yep – no need to worry! Travel insurance isn’t like going to restaurant and ordering kid-sized meals with smaller portions. Your children are covered up to the same limits even though they are travelling under your wing.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy.  It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions.  If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us

Scuba Diving Travel Insurance

Canadians can protect their scuba dives with travel insurance

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance:

  • World Nomads plans provide cover for recreational scuba diving and shark cage diving up to 30 metres, with the ability to pay an extra premium and be covered for scuba diving and cavern diving up to 40 metres, and working as a scuba diving instructor or guide
  • Coverage for injuries and medical transport if you're seriously hurt while scuba diving.
  • Plans cover lost, stolen, or damaged diving gear and luggage.
  • Access to emergency assistance anytime, anywhere.

You’ve gotten your PADI certification and now you’re ready to explore beneath the ocean’s surface. From coral reefs in the Caribbean to shipwrecks in Europe, there’s no shortage of divine dive sites around the world. And while calm waters, crystal clear visibility, and a bulletproof dive plan might make for the perfect underwater adventure, accidents can still happen. Our travel insurance plans include a range of benefits for scuba diving that may help with everything from stolen bags to unexpected medical expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my scuba diving trip?

A slip and fall on the dive boat, decompression sickness, jellyfish stings, and ear barotrauma are just some of the unexpected issues that could derail even the most carefully planned dive trip. Travel insurance coverage designed for scuba diving may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently – whether you're diving among the abundant marine life in the Florida Keys or alongside the Great Wall of China (yes, that’s possible!).

Scuba diving travel insurance: What may be covered?

As divers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover scuba diving while travelling. We also offer coverage for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
Decompression sickness and cuts from coral while diving

  2. 24/7 Emergency Assistance
Your first call in any emergency situation

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
Broken or damaged scuba diving gear (while transported via a common carrier, like a commercial airline)

  4. Trip Cancellation
Reimbursements if you’re too sick to go on your dive trip

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my scuba diving trip?

World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage.

  • The Standard plan includes travel insurance for recreational scuba diving and cavern diving up to 40 metres, as well as working as a scuba diving instructor or guide
  • The Explorer plan also covers those activities but has higher limits of coverage.

When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list scuba diving, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. The main purpose of your trip may be diving, but you may also be doing other fun things like kayaking or sailing. There’s over 250 other sports, activities and experiences that may be covered. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.

Recreational scuba diving and shark cage diving up to 30 metres are considered Level 1 activities and are automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list them when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like scuba diving or cavern diving up to 40 metres, and working as a scuba diving instructor or guide. If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

What may not be covered when scuba diving?

  • Scuba diving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Dives that are deeper (over 40 metres) than your adventure travel insurance coverage allows
  • Scuba diving without the proper certification (like PADI or NAUI), unless it is a discovery course with an instructor
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items
  • Travelling within your home province
  • Diving if your doctor has advised against it
  • Commercial scuba diving

Top safety tips we recommend for your scuba diving trip

  • Research your dive company: Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment.
  • Don’t dive without proper certifications: Make sure you’ve gone through the proper coursework through PADI or NAUI based upon the type of dive you’ll be doing. If you don’t have the proper certification for your dive, you won’t be covered by your travel insurance for scuba diving.
  • Check (and double check) your scuba gear before getting in the water: Make sure everything is working properly and if you’re unsure about anything, let your guide know.
  • Don’t dive alone or swim off on your own: Even if you see something cool underwater, don’t go check it out alone – you and your dive buddy need to stay together. Always know where your guide and buddy are at all times.
  • Keep an eye on your air gauge: Monitor this closely so you can plan your return to the surface accordingly. Always make sure you have enough air to complete your dive.
  • Ascend slowly and safely: Coming back to the surface too quickly can cause serious problems. Make sure to do safety stops at the appropriate depths.
  • Store a copy of your scuba diving travel insurance coverage in a dry bag: If an accident happens, you’ll want that handy – and dry. Make sure you have the phone number for the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team easily accessible, as well as your policy number. You may want to save that in your phone as well.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Is scuba diving covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, World Nomads offers travel insurance coverage for scuba diving, but make sure you list this as an activity you’ll be participating in when you purchase your policy. Recreational scuba diving and shark cage diving up to 30 metres are considered Level 1 activities and are automatically covered, but will still need to be listed when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like scuba diving or cavern diving up to 40 metres and working as a scuba diving instructor or guide. If you are doing something else on your trip and aren’t sure if it’s covered, you should contact us to make sure.

  • What should I do if I get hurt while scuba diving?

If you have travel insurance coverage for scuba diving and unexpectedly get hurt, you must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team and they can help direct you to nearby medical facilities. They can also translate for you if you’re travelling outside of Canada and your medical team doesn’t speak French or English. Make sure you keep all documentation including doctor reports, invoices, etc. You’ll need those things if you plan to make a claim.

  • What happens if my bags are delayed?

When you purchase travel insurance for diving, baggage coverage is also included. If your checked-in bags are delayed more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, your plan may reimburse you for essential items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be prepared: we recommend that you check the weather, check your equipment, and if you’re going guided, confirm that you’re using an accredited tour operator.
  • Stay healthy: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. It’s best to be sure you are physically capable of it. Consider asking a doctor before you leave about altitude medication or other helpful prescriptions you can take with you.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases and a loss or theft report. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you need to make a claim.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • What is the difference between hiking, trekking and mountaineering for travel insurance purposes?

The terms ‘hiking’ and ‘trekking’ are usually interchangeable when it comes to travel insurance benefits. Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so travel insurance plans like those from World Nomads offer varying levels of coverage depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.

  • Why should I consider travel insurance coverage for hiking and trekking?

Hiking and trekking adventures vary in intensity—and elevation. That’s why World Nomads offers two different plans, each with the opportunity to add additional activity coverage for higher risk activities. With elevation-based options, you can choose a plan that fits your route, your style, and your ambition.

    • Elevation coverage by plan:
      • Standard Plan – up to 3,000 metres
      • Explorer Plan – up to 3,000 metres
      • Additional activity level coverage – bumps up the coverage to 6,000 metres (additional cost involved)
  • When should I purchase travel insurance if I’m planning an adventure?

Many travellers choose to buy travel insurance soon after booking to access pre-trip benefits like Trip Cancellation coverage, which may reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason (like unexpected sickness or injury). Planning ahead means more protection. However, if you’re already on your trip, you can still purchase travel insurance (certain waiting periods may apply).

  • Would hiking gear and equipment be covered?

Yes, hiking gear and equipment may be covered under the baggage and personal effects benefit of our plans if it's lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged during your trip. Maximum benefit amounts and conditions vary by plan, so be sure to review your chosen plan documents —especially if you're carrying high-value items like trekking poles, boots, or GPS devices. Note: coverage does not include wear and tear or gear damaged during use. Additional terms and conditions apply.

  • Am I eligible to purchase travel insurance from World Nomads?

To be eligible for coverage under this policy you must:

    1. agree that Canada is your country of residence at the time tour policy is purchased and for the full duration of your trip;
    2. be less than 66 years of age at the time your policy purchase date; and
    3. be travelling for a maximum of 365 days.

To be eligible for trip cancellation coverage you must:

    1. purchase this policy prior to your start date; and
    2. have purchased your policy not more than 18 months prior to your start date.

To be eligible for all other coverage under this policy, you must be covered under Your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, your aggregate limit for all emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the full duration of your trip.

  • Does my plan include emergency evacuation coverage?

Yes, our travel insurance coverage includes emergency medical evacuation if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefit may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Medical evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning on exploring the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t fret. You have a couple of options that may ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Purchase a new plan: If your plan has expired, you may be able to purchase a new one while you’re still traveling. Just note your coverage takes effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan and will not cover any events that happened prior to the new plan’s start date. Your plan document will have full details to understand what’s covered, limits and exclusions.
  • Consider the optional “Cancel for Any Reason” benefit: It’s unfortunate, but it happens: You plan a big trip months in advance, only to have something come up that is now stopping you from going. The trip cancellation benefit may help recover your travel expenses (up to the maximum benefit amount), and may include unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel arrangements you paid for in advance, but a certain qualifying event would have to happen (sickness, natural disaster, etc.) But what if your dog is sick or you break up with your partner or you get a new job? Instead of losing all the money you put down, consider adding on the “cancel for any reason” benefit to your Explorer or Epic travel protection plan during the time-sensitive period to protect those long trips (and big investments!). Not available in NY, additional cost and terms apply.
20251106-4950803. This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your plan document for a full list of maximums, terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your state specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. Exclusion applies to Adventure or Extreme Activities.

So you’re taking the kids this time? World Nomads loves nothing more than seeing our future Nomads exposed to the wonders of the world at an early age, which is why we can cover your kids as dependents on your family plan. We’ll cover up to seven of your kids if you’re brave enough to take them all!

Why should I get family travel insurance?

Besides bickering about who gets the window seat or get the last scoop of ice cream, you may run into a bump or two when traveling with your family. No matter the ages of your crew, travel insurance* to cover the whole family may be a good idea.

Even under adult supervision, children can experience mishaps that can throw a wrench into your plans or require medical attention.

It’s also a good idea to have a contingency plan in case an emergency happens to the caregiver, leaving a child unattended. World Nomads plans may cover transport of your minor children back home, accompanied by an attendant if necessary, if an adult is hospitalized for at least seven days or passes away during the trip.

How can World Nomads Travel Insurance help me and my family?

World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance, designed for travelers by travelers, to help you travel confidently on your next family vacation. Our four plans each offer differing levels of coverage, so it’s important you read plan documents and pick the best one for your trip. Subject to terms and conditions, all our plans offer coverage for:

You can also access safety information and travel guides and videos to help you plan your trip.

Who is covered under a family travel insurance policy?

Parents plus their dependent children, as long as at least one of the traveling adults is a legal guardian of the dependent kids, and you all reside in the same US state.

When you get a quote, be sure to list all dependents who will be traveling with you on the plan to ensure coverage for your whole family.

What is a dependent?

For travel insurance purposes, dependent children are:

  • A person under the age of 25 and primarily dependent on You for support and maintenance. The age limit does not apply to a child who is incapable of self-sustaining employment by reason of mental or physical incapacity.

  • U.S. residents.

  • Unmarried.

  • Traveling with you on the same itinerary.

  • Reside in the same state as you.

If your kids don’t meet any of the above requirements, you can purchase single plans for each traveler who resides in a different state.

Are dependents covered up to the same policy limits?

Yep! Your kids are covered up to the same limits even though they are traveling as dependents. The benefit limits shown on the family plan are the maximum amount payable per person.

What’s not covered by family travel insurance?

Read your plan carefully as there are some exclusions including:

  • If you change your mind (or get in a fight with your loved ones!) you are not covered for cancellation or other expenses incurred. If you think this may be a possibility, you may want to consider purchasing the optional ‘cancel for any reason’ benefit, which can be added on to the Explorer or Epic plan within a time-sensitive period.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies).
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unattended.
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period and were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the covered activities list or agreed by World Nomads.
*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described. Please carefully read your state specific plan documents for a full description of coverage. Travel insurance is included as part of your travel protection plan which contains both insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services. Material included on this page does not represent, nor is it specific to, United States Fire Insurance Company or travel insurance benefits provided on United States Fire Insurance Company’s travel protection plans.

How do I buy a family travel insurance policy?

All you need to do is enter a few details about yourself and your trip as well as the ages of all your family members and we will automatically generate a quote for a family travel insurance plan.

Once you’ve selected the right level of coverage for you and paid for your plan, you will get instant confirmation of your family travel insurance to your selected email.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about family and travel insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask our customer service team

  • What if one of the family gets sick while traveling?
If you or a member of your family is injured or gets sick while you’re traveling, and you’ve bought the plan for the activities you’re doing, you may be covered for: hospitalization; out-patient treatment for medical emergencies; prescribed medicines, X-rays, and laboratory tests; and being brought home, if medically necessary.

Flexible Travel Insurance for Expats

Learn why expats choose World Nomads for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

With flexible travel insurance that covers more than 250 activities, it’s no wonder expats keep turning to World Nomads for travel insurance for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.

If you’ve left home without travel insurance or your plan has run out while you’re still on the road, don’t panic. World Nomads has got you covered with simple and flexible travel insurance* plans that you can buy online, anytime, from anywhere in the world.

Travel insurance for expats

World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.

There are three main reasons expats keep coming back to World Nomads for their travel insurance:

1. Flexible travel insurance

We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long (up to 180 days for a single trip plan or 45 days for an Annual Plan), or as little, as you need. Note that you do need to come back to your home in the US in order to close out your trip; you cannot keep buying travel insurance plans without returning to the US after the maximum length is up.

2. Accessible online travel insurance even after you’ve left home

All you need is a good internet connection to purchase a plan, no matter if you are home or on the road, to get a travel insurance quote. Answer a few simple questions about your trip and follow the prompts that will outline the coverage and benefits we offer. We offer two types of plans – Single Trip or Annual Travel Insurance. Within our single trip plans, we also have three levels of coverage– you can compare them when you get a quote and select the one that best suits your needs. Then read and accept the terms and conditions, pay for your insurance, and you’re done.

3. All the essentials you need covered, and more...

We designed our travel insurance plans around what our travelers most often claim for and tell us they want.

  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance in multiple languages for a range of services. If you need help (medical, lost bags, crimes, natural disasters, etc.), they should be your first call.
  • Emergency medical expense coverage that may include hospitalization, same day surgery and out-patient treatment, emergency dental coverage, and visits to registered medical practitioners.
  • Coverage for delayed, lost or stolen baggage, gear and sporting equipment.
  • Coverage for your non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses when you’ve had to unexpectedly cancel your trip for a covered reason
  • Mechanical breakdowns or transportation strikes that shut down travel on common carriers for 24 consecutive hours.
  • Coverage for more than 250 adventure activities, sports and experiences, including rock climbing, snowboarding, bungee jumping, hiking and snorkeling.
  • Coverage when your trip is delayed, interrupted or cancelled due to a covered reason.
  • Pre-trip medical support via our non-insurance service partners at Runway Health & FootprintID. If you need vaccines or medicines for your vacation destination, we’ve got your back.

Some of our higher tier plans (Explorer and Epic) also offer coverage for:

  • Rental Car Protection (applicable to state regulations; read your plan to make sure your state is covered).
  • Travel inconveniences, like a ski resort that shuts down due to lack of snow or your cruise misses a port of call due to inclement weather. Note that you must have purchased your plan during the time-sensitive period in order to qualify for this benefit.
  • Pet Kenneling for your furry friend if your travel delay causes them to stay at least six hours longer at their kennel than expected.
  • Trip Exchange if your travel supplier (like a tour company or cruise) changes the dates on you and you are forced to incur extra expenses, or even cancel, as a result.
  • Missed connection coverage for when you arrive too late to make your trip departure (like on a cruise or tour group) and you incur extra expenses to join at a different location (or port).

You can also add “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage to the Explorer and Epic plans, although an additional cost will be incurred. You must add this benefit to your plan during the time-sensitive period of 7 days after you make your first payment or deposit towards your trip. You may want to consider this if you are planning a big trip and have invested a lot of money, or if you are worried something could come up in the future that could cause you to miss it.

Broken glass shards

At 12:00 in the afternoon after a yoga class, I took a large jar of coconut water from the fridge, and accidentally dropped it on the counter and slipped onto the broken glass shards. I slipped while holding a jar. I hit my left wrist on the broken glass shards and had cut wound as a result. I looked at it quickly, saw open flesh flapping, wrapped it in a clean towel and called a taxi to go to the hospital as soon as possible. I had pain and numbness in my right wrist. No neck injury, no head injury, no other injuries apparent.

Why should you consider travel insurance coverage for your next hiking and trekking adventure?

Hiking and trekking can take you off the beaten path—and far from help if things go sideways. From twisted ankles on remote trails to gear stolen from your rental car, unexpected issues can derail even the most carefully planned journey. Travel insurance designed for hikers and trekkers may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your route and altitude level, it’s a smart way to explore confidently—whether you're heading to Patagonia or embarking on the Tour du Mont Blanc.

What travel insurance benefits could cover you and your hiking trip?

World Nomads offers coverage (up to the plan maximum benefit amount) for:

  • Medical expenses: if you get hurt while hiking on your trip and need medical attention, our accident and sickness medical expense insurance benefit may provide reimbursement for the treatment you need.
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation: If your hiking injuries are severe, acute, or life-threatening our plans may cover evacuation and transportation to a medical facility best suited for your care, subject to approval from the treating medical physician and the non-insurance 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Baggage and personal effects protection: Our gear coverage may help with reimbursement of the cost to repair or replace damaged, lost or stolen items, including airline checked bags.
  • Trip cancellation: if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason such as an unexpected illness, we may be able to reimburse your pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations.
  • Natural disaster evacuation assistance: if unforeseen severe weather or natural disaster event puts a stop to your trekking adventure, your plan may cover costs to get you out of there and to the nearest place of safety. Certain conditions and limitations apply.

All plans also include several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your hike. These include pre-trip medical consultations and storing your medical records digitally.

What may not be covered?

  • Being under the influence of narcotics
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • Travel within 100 miles of your home.

Consider using our pre-departure telehealth service to obtain prescription medications for the most common travel needs, like altitude sickness pills, delivered to your door before you leave on your trip.

The terms ‘hiking’ and ‘trekking’ are usually interchangeable when it comes to travel insurance benefits for covered activities. Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so travel protection plans like those from World Nomads offer varying levels of coverage depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.

  • Does my plan include emergency evacuation coverage?

Yes, our travel insurance coverage includes emergency evacuation if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefit may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.

  • Do I need insurance coverage for multi-day hiking trips?

Yes, multi-day hiking and trekking adventures may require more robust travel insurance coverage due to the added risks of being in remote areas for extended periods. World Nomads offers a range of plans that may cover emergency medical care, evacuation, trip cancellation, gear protection, and more. Our plans also include different elevation limits, so whether you're doing a relaxed overnight hike or a challenging high-altitude trek, you can choose a plan that fits the level of adventure you're planning.

    • Elevation coverage maximum by plan:
      • Standard Plan – up to 19,685 feet / 6,000 meters
      • Annual Plan – up to 19,685 feet / 6,000 meters
      • Explorer Plan – up to 21,325 feet / 6,500 meters
      • Epic Plan – up to 26,247 feet / 8,000 meters

What is travel insurance trip cancellation coverage?

If you must cancel your trip due to a covered reason, there's trip cancellation coverage in both our Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans. We cover your non-refundable prepaid trip costs (up to the maximum limit listed in the schedule of benefits) if you can't travel for a covered reason.

Medical emergencies are one of the most common reasons for trip cancellation. You may be covered if one or more of the following people develops a medical condition as certified by a physician that prohibits them from travelling, or dies:

  • You or your travel companion
  • Your or your travel companion’s immediate family member
  • Your or your travel companion’s business partner.

We know more than illness can stop you from travelling, so we also provide trip cancellation coverage in cases like these:

  • The Canadian government issues a formal advisory against travel to a destination, country or region listed on your itinerary. The advisory must be issued after both the date you paid for non-refundable prepaid travel arrangements and after your policy effective date. Note there is no coverage if an advisory is issued due to an epidemic or pandemic.
  • Your principal residence or destination residence is made uninhabitable by a natural disaster or unintentional act.
  • You or your travelling companion are a victim of a felonious assault within 10 days prior to your trip start date.
  • A strike stops all travel services at your departure point or destination.
  • Your travel supplier files for bankruptcy or completely ceases operations more than 14 days after your policy purchase date and the loss incurred is not recoverable from any other source.

It's important to note that trip cancellation coverage will not be available for an event or circumstance that is known before you purchase your travel insurance. Examples include, but are not limited to: an already-announced strike, an already-named hurricane and a pre-existing medical condition.

When you get a quote, be sure to read through the policy to understand the coverage and what the limits are, and any conditions and exclusions that apply. If you have questions regarding the coverage, please contact us.

What's not covered by travel insurance trip cancellation coverage?

Travel insurance isn't designed to cover everything. Here are some things that are not covered by your World Nomads plan:

Be prepared if you need to claim for trip cancellation

Depending on your trip cancellation claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history
  • Written documentation from the travel provider of reason for cancellation and any refunds

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

Wife's accident cancels Kilimanjaro.

I have to cancel my trip to Tanzania because my wife had an accident and she is waiting for a scan of her back. I should fly to Berlin tomorrow, then Bergen and day after to Africa. It is impossible now because she is alone in the house and I have to take her tomorrow to hospital for another scan. I paid 900 pounds for a Kilimanjaro Climb which is not refundable as it is too close to departure. I paid a deposit for a 3 day safari and had to cancel flights and my volunteer job.
