World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage.
When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list scuba diving, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. The main purpose of your trip may be diving, but you may also be doing other fun things like kayaking or sailing. There’s over 250 other sports, activities and experiences that may be covered. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.
Recreational scuba diving and shark cage diving up to 30 metres are considered Level 1 activities and are automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list them when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like scuba diving or cavern diving up to 40 metres, and working as a scuba diving instructor or guide. If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

You may also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags.

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for hiking. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team
The terms ‘hiking’ and ‘trekking’ are usually interchangeable when it comes to travel insurance benefits. Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so travel insurance plans like those from World Nomads offer varying levels of coverage depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.
Hiking and trekking adventures vary in intensity—and elevation. That’s why World Nomads offers two different plans, each with the opportunity to add additional activity coverage for higher risk activities. With elevation-based options, you can choose a plan that fits your route, your style, and your ambition.
Many travellers choose to buy travel insurance soon after booking to access pre-trip benefits like Trip Cancellation coverage, which may reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason (like unexpected sickness or injury). Planning ahead means more protection. However, if you’re already on your trip, you can still purchase travel insurance (certain waiting periods may apply).
Yes, hiking gear and equipment may be covered under the baggage and personal effects benefit of our plans if it's lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged during your trip. Maximum benefit amounts and conditions vary by plan, so be sure to review your chosen plan documents —especially if you're carrying high-value items like trekking poles, boots, or GPS devices. Note: coverage does not include wear and tear or gear damaged during use. Additional terms and conditions apply.
To be eligible for coverage under this policy you must:
To be eligible for trip cancellation coverage you must:
To be eligible for all other coverage under this policy, you must be covered under Your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, your aggregate limit for all emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the full duration of your trip.
Yes, our travel insurance coverage includes emergency medical evacuation if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefit may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Medical evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.

So you’re taking the kids this time? World Nomads loves nothing more than seeing our future Nomads exposed to the wonders of the world at an early age, which is why we can cover your kids as dependents on your family plan. We’ll cover up to seven of your kids if you’re brave enough to take them all!
Besides bickering about who gets the window seat or get the last scoop of ice cream, you may run into a bump or two when traveling with your family. No matter the ages of your crew, travel insurance* to cover the whole family may be a good idea.
Even under adult supervision, children can experience mishaps that can throw a wrench into your plans or require medical attention.
It’s also a good idea to have a contingency plan in case an emergency happens to the caregiver, leaving a child unattended. World Nomads plans may cover transport of your minor children back home, accompanied by an attendant if necessary, if an adult is hospitalized for at least seven days or passes away during the trip.
World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance, designed for travelers by travelers, to help you travel confidently on your next family vacation. Our four plans each offer differing levels of coverage, so it’s important you read plan documents and pick the best one for your trip. Subject to terms and conditions, all our plans offer coverage for:
You can also access safety information and travel guides and videos to help you plan your trip.
Parents plus their dependent children, as long as at least one of the traveling adults is a legal guardian of the dependent kids, and you all reside in the same US state.
When you get a quote, be sure to list all dependents who will be traveling with you on the plan to ensure coverage for your whole family.
For travel insurance purposes, dependent children are:
A person under the age of 25 and primarily dependent on You for support and maintenance. The age limit does not apply to a child who is incapable of self-sustaining employment by reason of mental or physical incapacity.
Unmarried.
Traveling with you on the same itinerary.
Reside in the same state as you.
If your kids don’t meet any of the above requirements, you can purchase single plans for each traveler who resides in a different state.
Yep! Your kids are covered up to the same limits even though they are traveling as dependents. The benefit limits shown on the family plan are the maximum amount payable per person.
Read your plan carefully as there are some exclusions including:
All you need to do is enter a few details about yourself and your trip as well as the ages of all your family members and we will automatically generate a quote for a family travel insurance plan.
Once you’ve selected the right level of coverage for you and paid for your plan, you will get instant confirmation of your family travel insurance to your selected email.

With flexible travel insurance that covers more than 250 activities, it’s no wonder expats keep turning to World Nomads for travel insurance for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.
If you’ve left home without travel insurance or your plan has run out while you’re still on the road, don’t panic. World Nomads has got you covered with simple and flexible travel insurance* plans that you can buy online, anytime, from anywhere in the world.
World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.
There are three main reasons expats keep coming back to World Nomads for their travel insurance:
We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long (up to 180 days for a single trip plan or 45 days for an Annual Plan), or as little, as you need. Note that you do need to come back to your home in the US in order to close out your trip; you cannot keep buying travel insurance plans without returning to the US after the maximum length is up.
All you need is a good internet connection to purchase a plan, no matter if you are home or on the road, to get a travel insurance quote. Answer a few simple questions about your trip and follow the prompts that will outline the coverage and benefits we offer. We offer two types of plans – Single Trip or Annual Travel Insurance. Within our single trip plans, we also have three levels of coverage– you can compare them when you get a quote and select the one that best suits your needs. Then read and accept the terms and conditions, pay for your insurance, and you’re done.
We designed our travel insurance plans around what our travelers most often claim for and tell us they want.
Some of our higher tier plans (Explorer and Epic) also offer coverage for:
You can also add “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage to the Explorer and Epic plans, although an additional cost will be incurred. You must add this benefit to your plan during the time-sensitive period of 7 days after you make your first payment or deposit towards your trip. You may want to consider this if you are planning a big trip and have invested a lot of money, or if you are worried something could come up in the future that could cause you to miss it.

At 12:00 in the afternoon after a yoga class, I took a large jar of coconut water from the fridge, and accidentally dropped it on the counter and slipped onto the broken glass shards. I slipped while holding a jar. I hit my left wrist on the broken glass shards and had cut wound as a result. I looked at it quickly, saw open flesh flapping, wrapped it in a clean towel and called a taxi to go to the hospital as soon as possible. I had pain and numbness in my right wrist. No neck injury, no head injury, no other injuries apparent.

Mountaineering, on the other hand, often includes technical climbing or high-altitude ascents that may require ropes or specialized gear. Each activity carries different risks, so travel protection plans like those from World Nomads offer varying levels of coverage depending on the elevation, difficulty, and whether technical skills or equipment are involved. Check out our (lengthy) list of covered adventure activities to help you determine the plan right for you.
Hiking and trekking adventures vary in intensity—and elevation. That’s why World Nomads offers three single-trip travel protection plans (Standard, Explorer, and Epic), plus an Annual Plan, each with different elevation coverage to match your goals. With elevation-based options, you can choose a plan that fits your route, your style, and your ambition.
Many travelers choose to buy travel insurance soon after booking to access pre-trip benefits like Trip Cancellation coverage, which may reimburse non-refundable costs if you cancel for a covered reason (like sickness or injury). If you’re considering purchasing the Explorer or Epic plans with optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage, it must be purchased within seven days of your first trip deposit (such as booking a flight or putting money down on a hotel). Purchasing early also gives you access to our non-insurance pre-trip telehealth service, which can help you get essential medications—like altitude sickness pills or antibiotics just in case last night’s campfire chili doesn’t agree with you. Planning ahead means more flexibility and fewer surprises on the trail.
Yes, our travel insurance coverage includes emergency evacuation if you’re seriously injured or become unexpectedly ill while hiking or trekking. If you're in a remote area and need transport to the nearest adequate medical facility, the Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefit may help cover the cost—which can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Evacuation must be deemed medically necessary by the attending physician and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Always check your plan’s elevation limits and covered activities to make sure you're protected for your specific adventure.
Yes, each plan has a different altitude maximum.
Yes, multi-day hiking and trekking adventures may require more robust travel insurance coverage due to the added risks of being in remote areas for extended periods. World Nomads offers a range of plans that may cover emergency medical care, evacuation, trip cancellation, gear protection, and more. Our plans also include different elevation limits, so whether you're doing a relaxed overnight hike or a challenging high-altitude trek, you can choose a plan that fits the level of adventure you're planning.

If you’ve booked and paid for your trip and need to unexpectedly cancel, the last thing you want is to be out of pocket for non-refundable trip costs. World Nomads travel insurance plans offer coverage for your non-refundable, pre-paid travel arrangements, such as transportation and accommodation expenses if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason. So, you’ll have one less thing to worry about and you can start saving for your next adventure instead.
If you must cancel your trip due to a covered reason, there's trip cancellation coverage in both our Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans. We cover your non-refundable prepaid trip costs (up to the maximum limit listed in the schedule of benefits) if you can't travel for a covered reason.
Medical emergencies are one of the most common reasons for trip cancellation. You may be covered if one or more of the following people develops a medical condition as certified by a physician that prohibits them from travelling, or dies:
We know more than illness can stop you from travelling, so we also provide trip cancellation coverage in cases like these:
It's important to note that trip cancellation coverage will not be available for an event or circumstance that is known before you purchase your travel insurance. Examples include, but are not limited to: an already-announced strike, an already-named hurricane and a pre-existing medical condition.
When you get a quote, be sure to read through the policy to understand the coverage and what the limits are, and any conditions and exclusions that apply. If you have questions regarding the coverage, please contact us.

I have to cancel my trip to Tanzania because my wife had an accident and she is waiting for a scan of her back. I should fly to Berlin tomorrow, then Bergen and day after to Africa. It is impossible now because she is alone in the house and I have to take her tomorrow to hospital for another scan. I paid 900 pounds for a Kilimanjaro Climb which is not refundable as it is too close to departure. I paid a deposit for a 3 day safari and had to cancel flights and my volunteer job.
