What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Mexico? Sun-kissed beaches, delicious tacos, and a welcoming, friendly culture all come to mind for us. Travelers also come for the all-inclusive resorts, river kayaking, hiking to ancient Mayan ruins or simply as a stop on a cruise. Whatever your dream vacation looks like, Mexico is a place of endless adventure and rich culture.
With this much diversity, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians in Mexico. You’ve escaped the cold; make sure you’re prepared for the sun!
Your medical insurance back home may not work in Mexico and will not provide cover for such things as trip cancellation or trip interruption. World Nomads travel insurance plans provide protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. While travel insurance isn’t required to enter Mexico, you’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against those unforeseen events like accidents, theft, bad weather and more.
Our travel insurance plans also include important travel, medical and security assistance services designed to provide you with assistance and guidance before and during your trip. Keep in mind that certain parts of Mexico are more dangerous than others. Before booking a ticket, make sure you are comfortable with the government-issued safety warnings. Drug-related crime can occur even in tourist destinations. As with all places, watch your surroundings and take extra precautions for your personal safety
With a country as big as Mexico, the healthcare system can be different city-to-city, region-to-region and may not be what you are familiar with back home. In small clinics, you may have to give your provider cash or credit card payment before being seen by a medical professional. Large hospitals may also have policies and procedures in place that require upfront payment or payment guarantees. The 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help you navigate the process.
The best thing you can do to protect yourself against emergency medical expenses, is to have travel insurance for your trip to Mexico.
In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team could help you find a reputable medical centre and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call us as soon possible.
A common ailment affecting travelers to Mexico are gastrointestinal disorders. In Mexico, travelers should not drink water straight from the tap without double checking that it’s been filtered. The same goes for ice in drinks. The water system is not the same as back home in Canada, and it could make you sick.
And, while many travelers recommend trying street food in Mexico, make sure you pick a cart that looks clean and doesn’t have food sitting out in the sun for too long. Simple common sense can save you a bad stomachache later on!
Get a quote, read your policy and give us a call if you have any questions.
If the airline damages or loses your checked bags, the first step is to try and remedy the situation with them. If that fails, your travel insurance for Mexico may provide reimbursement. Make sure you obtain a report and a letter of coverage or denial from the transportation carrier as you will need these when you submit your claim to us. You will also need to submit receipts or sales slips for all items claimed under your baggage and personal effects coverage. You could be reimbursed for a change of clothes and basic toiletries until you are reunited with your stuff. If you have a snorkeling trip planned the next day (and you have a receipt to prove it), a new swimsuit could even be reimbursed.
If someone stole your bags in Mexico, the first step is to file a police report. Then, give the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team a call. You could be reimbursed for your stolen bags and personal belongings, minus depreciation and up to your policy limits. Certain qualifying factors would have to have occurred, as well. For instance, you couldn’t have left your belongings alone by the pool or have been intoxicated when the theft took place. It’s always best to read your policy details to understand what you will and won’t be covered for.
Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. Maybe a hurricane destroys your resort or a loved one back in Canada gets sick. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits that may provide reimbursement for your prepaid, non-refundable expense if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip. There are a variety of reasons why you might need to cancel or interrupt your trip to Mexico. Travel insurance does not cover everything. Your travel insurance for Mexico may help protect your travel expenses if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.
Hurricane season starts in June and ends in October, but the most likely months for a big storm are in August and September. The Yucatan Peninsula is especially at risk, but hurricanes have hit Baja California on the Pacific side. Storms are hard to predict, so the best thing you can do is protect yourself with travel insurance in case an unexpected hurricane threatens your trip. If you bought your travel insurance policy prior to the storm developing into a major event (when the storm system first becomes classified as a hurricane), your travel insurance for Mexico may provide cancellation protection if you are unable to occupy your destination residence because of a natural disaster. If you find yourself in the bullseye of the storm, you should contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team and the team can provide emergency travel assistance. You may also be eligible for trip interruption benefits.
Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can also help protect you in case of emergencies back home in Canada. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your prepaid non-refundable (up to the policy limits) hotel expenses or airfare that you can no longer use. This benefit could especially come in handy for snowbirds or other long term stays in Mexico. Get a quote to see the price of your long- or short-term stay.
Mexico is a beautiful place to visit year-around. However, there are certain cities and areas that you may want to reconsider visiting. Travelers worldwide are often targeted by criminals looking to take advantage of tourists who look out of place or are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. When in Mexico, be aware of your surroundings and stay away from areas known to have high crime.
We’ve written pretty extensively about various scams and common crimes in Mexico in our Destination Guide. It all comes down to avoiding bad areas, protecting your stuff and staying vigilant.
However, crime can happen at any time. If this happens to you, and you’re injured in the assault or become a victim of theft, seek assistance from the local authorities. If you need to seek medical attention, contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team for help. You’ll need to get a police report from the police immediately or as soon as reasonably possible, and a written confirmation of the loss from the hotel manager, tour guide, or transportation authorities, where relevant. Need help deciding what to do? Call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team and our team will help you with emergency medical or travel assistance..
Once you’ve done sampling those street vendor tacos, we’ve got you covered for more than 250 activities in Mexico, like snorkeling, kayaking and hiking. You’ll need to list out your planned activities when you are purchasing your policy for travel insurance for Mexico. Some activities will require an extra level of coverage, depending on the risk involved.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

With such diverse geography and cultures, Spain has plenty to offer travelers from all over the globe. As well as unique art and music, there are countless outdoor adventure activities, and a thriving nightlife.
While your trip will usually go off without a hitch, travel insurance is a backup, and even a life saver, if you or your loved ones run into trouble or are sick or injured. It can also save you a lot of money and headaches.
For example, if you’ve arrived in beautiful Barcelona but your checked-in bags have gone missing and are delayed by the carrier for more than 24 hours after your arrival, we’ll reimburse you (up to the benefit limits) to replace your essential clothing and toiletries while you wait for your baggage to be returned. Check out our Help center article on what to do if the airline carrier loses your bags.
With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or while you're traveling (waiting periods apply); it’s entirely up to you.
World Nomads has two plans – Standard and Explorer - which cover an array of activities including mountain biking, skiing, hiking, kayaking, surfing, and scuba diving. We also offer cover for other key events including:
Travel insurance tip: always make sure you’ve done your research on the countries your visiting as there may be US Department of State and local government imposed travel bans or restrictions in place. If you decide to travel to a country on a ‘Do Not Travel’ list your World Nomads policy will not provide cover for the reasons outlined in the warning. The US Department of State (DOS) currently advises against all but essential travel to many countries and territories due to coronavirus (COVID-19) risks. You can look up DOS foreign travel advice here.
While wandering around the beautiful streets of Barcelona, Madrid, Grenada, and Seville can be a dream come true you also need to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight. Pickpockets often work in teams of two or more and tend to target money and passports. Remember to keep a photocopy or scanned copy of your passport and other important documents separate somewhere safe. Check out our baggage and valuables travel insurance cover designed for international travellers.
While it has almost become a rite of passage for many travelers to visit Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia to enjoy the nightlife and festivities, you should always make sure you are in control and don’t go overboard with alcohol and other substances. We want you to have fun but also to be alert to your surroundings. Buy your own drinks and always keep sight of them. Stick with your travel companions, especially at big festivals.
While many visit Spain for the tapas markets, bars, cafes and museums in Spain, there are also adventures to be had off the beaten track. Spain offers any number of outdoor activities and sports. Some great examples include:
Note: always check your Policy Wording carefully to make sure all your chosen activities are covered. You may need to upgrade your level of cover for a specific activity.
The level of coverage you’ll have for any Coronavirus (COVID-19)-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while traveling around Spain, your benefits may include:
Some of our Explorer plans also offer coverage for some additional COVID-19-related events to assist our travelers, such as cancellation following your diagnosis. Additionally all of our travelers have access to our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team, who can help you with access to local medical care.
To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.
Check with a medical practitioner regarding the vaccinations you may need – especially if you’re traveling to other countries in addition to Spain – preferably at least eight weeks before you travel. Evidence of vaccination (in the form of a certificate) could be a requirement for entry to some countries. Take some time to learn about any specific health risks in the country(ies) you are visiting.
Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

As an Irish resident you are entitled to public healthcare in countries in the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland if you become ill or injured while on holiday or on a temporary stay of less than 3 months. Ensure that you get or renew your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you go, and remember, you need one for every person travelling in your group.
Please note that the EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It doesn’t cover medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or treatment of a non-urgent nature. Also, some private hospitals may not accept the EHIC, so you should check with the hospital administrator beforehand and consider a travel insurance policy to fill any coverage gaps.

If you are a UK citizen travelling to Spain, you do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen Area if you’re staying for fewer than 90 days. But starting from 2025, you’ll need to apply for ETIAS visa authorisation to visit Spain and other EU states, which will allow you to visit the Schengen Area without a visa, even though the UK has left the EU. The exact date for when the ETIAS will be mandatory has not yet been announced.
Most UK residents can no longer apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which ended in December 2020. Instead UK travellers must apply for the UK’s Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which offers cover for medical treatment in Schengen states. As the GHIC will not cover all treatment or mishaps, it is a good idea to get travel insurance that covers you for more extensive medical costs and lost luggage.

Ahh inspirational Italy – from the sparkling blue Mediterranean sea and the Amalfi coast, to the famous lakes of Maggiere and Garda, the stunning Dolomites, and thriving old-Italy with history and culture at every turn.
It’s no surprise Italy is a popular destination for many with so much to see and do, but it doesn’t come without the occasional unexpected twist and turn which can trip-up many a seasoned traveller.
No matter how well planned your trip, unexpected events can crop up. Having travel insurance can mean the difference between a costly, trip-ending disaster, or a blip on the radar that becomes part of a great travel anecdote told to friends and family when you return.
Depending on the type of Italian holiday you’re planning, World Nomads offers a choice between the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan, each offering different benefits and limits. All our plans for Irish residents offer cover for:
And for Explorer Plan travellers, the cover section 'Coronavirus Travel Costs' is also available.
Once your trip is booked and you know the types of activities you’ll be doing, your next Italian job will be to book travel insurance.
Theft is an everyday occurrence in Italy, and travellers are often targeted by thieves who’ve developed some clever tricks to catch even the most vigilant visitor. World Nomads travel insurance offers cover for lost, stolen or damaged luggage – and there are some common events our travellers in Italy experience.
Having insurance can help you carry on with your trip in the event of a theft - making sure thieves don't steal your whole holiday. If, while wandering through Monti’s art galleries and wine bars, your bags or personal items are stolen, there is cover available for the value of the items taken (and depreciation may apply if you didn't specify the item). Following a theft, you may also incur the additional cost of obtaining a replacement passport or visa, plus related expenses for accommodation, travel and fees that you would otherwise not have had to pay for if your passport or visa had not been stolen. You’ll need a report from local police and your carrier or other local authority to support your claim, and benefit limits apply.
For Explorer Plan travellers, there is cover available for stolen cash and benefit limits apply. There is no cover for stolen cash on the Standard Plan. You’ll need to support your claim with a police report of the theft, along with ATM receipts of the cash withdrawals and other details, so make sure you read your policy carefully to understand how this section of your cover works.
With the Explorer Plan, if you hire a car in Italy, and you have an accident which damages your hire car, or it’s stolen, there is cover available for the lesser of:
If you accidentally lose the car keys, or they’re stolen or damaged, their replacement (including the cost of repairs if a locksmith has to break into the car), may also be covered under the Rental car key replacement cover on the Explorer Plan.
There is no cover available if you’re behaving recklessly, if you violate the rental car agreement or you break the law. There is also no cover for anyone under the age of 21 (at the trip start date) operating the vehicle.
You should note the requirement to have a valid Irish drivers licence, as it may affect any claim you make under this section. Also, you need to purchase the rental vehicle insurance, damage waiver or the equivalent offered by the rental vehicle company or agency at the time of hire.
Unplanned medical emergencies can have a lasting impact long after the holiday memories fade. Our overseas emergency medical cover includes:
World Nomads also offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events. If you get sick with Coronavirus while travelling in Italy:
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything and it’s important to understand where your cover won’t apply so you aren’t caught short. For example, while an accident that requires emergency medical treatment generally could be covered, if it was caused because you were intoxicated with alcohol or drugs, then it may affect your claim.
Also, understand that pre-existing medical conditions that require medical care or which may cause you to cancel or curtail your trip won't generally won’t be covered either. Check the wording of your policy to be sure.
If you require any medical treatment during your trip to Italy, you will first need to contact your private medical insurance (PMI) provider, if you have one, and follow its processes. Where your PMI provider cannot help, please contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team before incurring medical costs.
Carrying our 24/7 emergency assistance details could save valuable time in an emergency.
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything, so make sure you’re careful with your planning and you read the Policy Wording to make sure you understand what’s included and what’s not, as well as the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions. If you have any questions get in touch.

South Africa has so many calling cards, not only is it home to the Big Five, but it also has a rich history, culture, impressive wine regions and stunning surfing beaches. You always leave richer (culturally) than when you arrived.
With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance before you land in O.R Tambo International Airport or Cape Town International Airport, or while you're already traveling around South Africa.
World Nomads offers cover for many activities ranging from mountain biking to skiing, surfing, kayaking and scuba diving. All our plans offer cover for:
We know how impactful Cape Town, Durban, and the 100-plus national parks here are. So it’s important to be have travel insurance in case something unexpected arises.
As careful as international travelers are, belongings do get stolen, flights get cancelled, and illness or injury can happen. If you forgot to buy travel insurance before you left home, then don’t stress, with World Nomads you can buy travel insurance before you get on the plane or while you're already traveling around beautiful South Africa, it’s up to you.
Depending on your country of residence and the level of cover you have chosen, our policies may cover you for:
The answer is Yes. Whether you’re on a game park safari, or you want to discover the beautiful coastal Garden Route, travel insurance can provide a safety net if your dream trip is derailed due to unexpected events especially when it comes to cover for stolen or damaged baggage.
If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that parts of South Africa can be dangerous with car–jackings, armed robberies, and petty theft. Johannesburg is a city where you need to use common-sense as there are several no-go zones for visitors. When on the road please drive with caution as farmers often don’t fence their livestock, so it’s not uncommon for there to be a stray animal on the road to navigate around. If you’re venturing through a game reserve, remember you’re in the ‘wild’, the elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and lions aren’t tame.
If you find yourself in a crisis, our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7. The team can also help during an emergency if you’re having trouble with a language you don’t know.
World Nomads recognizes that the level of cover each traveler needs depends on their individual circumstances. That’s precisely why we offer two levels of cover - Standard and Explorer.
Depending on your country of residence and the plan you have purchased you may be covered, for example, if you plan on renting a vehicle and driving between Johannesburg and Kruger National Park. If you’ve purchased the Explorer option your cover would include a rental car excess and may cover the cost of a replacement key should one be required. The Explorer Plan may also include benefits associated with hijacking, as well as higher baggage reimbursement limits, both of which are important given the rates of crime in the country.
South Africa offers countless possibilities when it comes to outdoor activities, for example, white water rafting, hiking, bungee jumping, and even shark cage diving.
For the active traveler, World Nomads covers all Level 1 adventure sports, activities and experiences such as hot-air ballooning and camping but if you intend to participate in higher risk activities you must upgrade your cover when you buy your policy by selecting all the activities and sports you’ll be undertaking and pay the additional premium for those activities we cover.
Depending on your country of residence and the level of cover you’ve chosen, you may need to add activities to your policy (check your policy wording carefully as terms and conditions apply).
Some things we don’t cover include:
We have compiled this general information if you’re looking for more South Africa travel inspiration. We also have information on the latest travel safety alerts for South Africa.

A silky-smooth Nordic lake at dawn or a white-knuckled ride down a river in Rocky Mountain National Park, action on the water is often the most memorable part of any holiday, especially for water-loving New Zealanders. If the unexpected happens while you’re soaking up the fun, World Nomads has travel insurance plans to help when your kayaking and rafting trip suddenly takes a nosedive.
Planning your kayaking and rafting activities before you leave home means you can arrange the right level of cover. Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer many of the same benefits including cover for level 1 sport and adventure activities such as kayaking (inland or coastal waters within 3 nautical miles), whitewater kayaking/rafting and river boarding on grades 1-5.
For more adventurous nomads you need to upgrade your cover if you’re planning on kayaking, windsurfing or sailing beyond 3 nautical miles from the coast. Simply specify all the activities you have planned for your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your Policy Document for details or contact us.
If you are planning on taking your own kayak or other gear with you, please note that there is no cover for watercraft of any type (except surfboards). For other sporting equipment, cover is available where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight. If you've purchased the Explorer Plan, we'll also pay to hire replacement equipment because your sporting equipment was:
Note: we won’t cover damage to any sporting equipment while in use, if your sporting equipment is over three years old, or damage or theft of any sporting equipment left unsupervised in a public place.
Paddling around the hidden coves of Sydney Harbour or rafting on the Ayung River in Bali sound idyllic but if you return to your locked car to find the window smashed and your gear stolen, our Standard and Explorer plans may cover those unforeseen events and injuries to help get your next kayaking/rafting trip back on track.
World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:
If things don’t go smoothly and you’re left bumped, bruised or even broken, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team is here to help you.
If you’ve seriously injured yourself and require medical treatment, call the Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible so it can direct you to the nearest medical center or hospital. Or in the worst case, contact Emergency Assistance so it can evacuate you to the most appropriate facility for your care, where possible. We may even bring you back home to New Zealand to recover if required.
World Nomads love hearing about those exotic tales from the world’s best kayaking/rafting spots:
Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something careless (like getting your gear stolen on the beach while you take a swim). Some things we don’t cover include:
Traveller’s Tip: Before you launch, remember to check the International River Grading of the river you’re on so you won’t invalidate your cover. The scale is used for various water sports and activities, such as black and white water rafting, river boarding, white-water canoeing, stand up paddle surfing, and whitewater kayaking.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please
