Once you realise your luggage is delayed, report it to the carrier as soon as possible. For lengthy delays, you should ask them to compensate you to replace essential items you may need while you wait for your bags to be returned.
Get a written report of what’s happened from the carrier, for example a Property Irregularity Report, from the carrier confirming the delay was greater than 24 hours from your arrival and any compensation they offer to you.
Keep the receipts for any essential items you buy such as toothbrushes, prescription medication or a change of clothes. Your expenses must be supported by receipts dated prior to the delivery of your delayed baggage and after 24 hours from your arrival.
Before you go shopping for an entire new wardrobe to replace your designer jeans or a new ball-gown for that special event, because you believe everything you own is "essential", there will be limits on what your policy can and cannot cover, so check your policy wording carefully or contact us (Yes, we've seen claims like this!)
Original receipts may be necessary if you intend to make a claim and your policy covers these expenses.
This information could help you when things go wrong and you want to make a claim. All travel insurance plans are different and cover will vary, depending what's happened, your country of residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your policy wording will always have the full terms, conditions and exclusions that apply.
If you have questions about what's covered and not covered, just ask us.

Having your passport stolen really sucks. Thankfully World Nomads’ policies may help cover your extra costs while you arrange an emergency replacement passport. Here’s how...
Report the incident to the relevant authorities and get a report from them. This may include:
Travel Insurance tip: for certain countries, it is an offence not to report the loss or theft or your passport as soon as you learn of the loss. It may also affect your travel insurance cover if you don't report it as soon as reasonably possible.
Carefully check the process to apply for an emergency or replacement passport with the British embassy. You may need to attend an appointment at your nearest British embassy, High Commission or consulate after you’ve applied online on the FCDO website. You must provide us with copies of all documentation provided by the foreign government agency and the UK government. You will also need a written police report when your passport has been stolen.
If you need to travel to a different location to apply in person or collect your emergency passport, you should arrange to do this.
Travel Insurance tip: emergency passports do not permanently replace your passport. They can be issued quickly with limited validity so you can return back to the UK or continue with your trip.
Once you’ve confirmed that any travel arrangements are going to be affected, contact any accommodation, tour, transport and other providers to rearrange or cancel any arrangements you may have. Make sure you get confirmation from them in writing of the changes or cancellation, and details of any refunds or extra fees paid.
If you think you'll need to claim, make sure you keep the official reports you were given and all original receipts as evidence to support your claim including your itineraries, booking and cancellation confirmations for any affected transport, accommodation and additional expenses.
This information may help you when things go wrong and you want to make a claim. World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage.
When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list kayaking, rafting, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. There’s over 250 other sports, activities and experiences that may be covered. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.
Kayaking in inland/coastal waters (within three nautical miles of shore), snow rafting, and cave tubing are considered Level 1 activities. Whitewater and blackwater rafting, hydrospeeding, and river boarding for grades/classes 1-5 are too. All Level 1 activities are automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list them when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like sea kayaking and swimming outside of coastal waters. If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

Unfortunately we can’t help with that punctured tyre but if you’ve seriously hurt yourself World Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer plans can offer coverage for unforeseen medical costs on your next mountain biking adventure overseas. Both our plans offer optional upgrades so if you plan on taking lifts for some gripping descents, you must upgrade to the activity level that suits your needs at the time you purchase your policy.
We understand that unexpected accidents and illnesses may strike at any moment, that’s why the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team is here to help you navigate any issues you may have if you end up in hospital. If you’re admitted to hospital, you (or someone else) must notify our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team as soon as reasonably possible. Your medical expenses can be paid directly to the hospital, where possible, once cover is confirmed. For more information on what to do if you need emergency assistance while overseas check out our Overseas Medical Treatment and Hospitalisation Help Centre article.
Travel insurance tip: Irish travellers, if you require any medical treatment during your trip while outside of Ireland (and as soon as your medically able to do so) you’ll need to contact your private medical insurance (PMI) provider (if applicable) and follow their emergency medical procedures and claims procedures. Where your PMI provider cannot provide assistance, get in touch with our 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible before incurring medical costs, and also please provide us with details of your PMI provider to help us coordinate your care. For more information on what to do please refer to Section 8 Medical Sections of Cover, Important Information, in your Policy Wording.
You can also claim for your non-refundable costs of cancelling your trip if you or your travel buddy suddenly gets sick or hurt before you go on your trip. We also offer cover if you’re left empty-handed when the airline loses your baggage; or if a storm affects your connecting flight and puts the brakes on your travel plans (Explorer Plan only).
Having travel insurance can help take some of the stress out if you end up in hospital with unexpected medical costs from a broken leg to some bangs and scrapes. Importantly travel insurance offers coverage for those ‘worst possible case’ scenarios when you need to be repatriated to Ireland to recover.
An upgrade for certain activities and sports may be required and terms and conditions apply for each activity. Check out our activities article for details or contact us if you have questions.

It's never been easier to unplug and take off, now that you can work and study remotely – assuming there's good Wi-Fi.
But travel glitches can arrive in all shapes and sizes, even with the most meticulous planning. Although it's great to hope for the best, it may be wiser to plan your moves with travel insurance*.
Because of flexible work and school schedules, more travelers are opting to take 'flexcations', extended stays away from home that are mixture of leisure and work (digital nomads), or going to school remotely, either domestically or abroad.
If you’re planting yourself in a different place while working and playing, there are a few questions to ask yourself when you’re shopping around for a travel insurance plan. How long am I staying? What kind of medical coverage do I need? Am I taking along personal belongings that I can’t stand to lose? Is my entire family covered? How much am I spending on pre-paid deposits?
There's a lot to consider when buying travel insurance and specifically for the needs of flexcations. Here are a number of ways that travel insurance can help on a trip that combines business and pleasure.
Whether you're seeking a quiet haven or an outdoor adventure, World Nomads has ways to support you:
When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side-by-side and determine which one might be right for you.
Travel insurance isn't designed to cover everything. These are some things that don't fall under the scope of your plan:
Staying for an extended period of time or moving to a country as an expat? Consider whether you need a travel health insurance as opposed to a travel insurance plan. To read more about the differences, go to our page on travel health insurance.
To read more about ‘Digital Nomad’ travel insurance see our Travel for Digital Nomads article.
