Thailand should be on every global travelers’ radar as it offers a mix of white sand beaches, ornate temples, and lush forests. With so much to explore, you may want to consider the benefits of travel insurance for you and your travel companions.
With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in and you're ready to go, or while you're on the road traveling around Thailand.
World Nomads has two plans which cover an array of activities ranging from mountain biking to snorkelling, hiking, kayaking, surfing, scuba diving and more. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you choose, World Nomads plans offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:
Traveler tip 1: if you’ve suffered a theft, get a Property Irregularity Report or other incident report from the carrier so you can submit it with your claim, as well as a police report. You should also have copies of the original receipts for your valuables and any luggage tickets.
World Nomads has two travel insurance plans to choose from, Standard vs Explorer. Both plans can help if you suddenly up in hospital with a bad case of food poisoning, or if you’ve had bags or valuables stolen. A worst-case scenario is if you are badly injured and need to be repatriated back to your Country of Residence as this can be very costly.
Traveler tip 2: To travel to Thailand, you’ll need to seek permission using the Royal Thai Government’s online platform – Thailand Pass and be approved before entering. Requirements for a Thailand Pass include a vaccination certificate, a negative COVID test from three days before departure and travel insurance with a minimum coverage of US$50,213 (AUD$70,000). For the latest Thailand travel alerts and restrictions click here.
While Thailand is amongst the safest places to travel, there is always the chance that you could be the victim of a theft. Make sure you keep a copy of your receipts as you’ll need proof of ownership for any claims should your items get stolen. All World Nomads travel insurance plans will have some baggage coverage if your bags and valuables are stolen or damaged. However, with any insurance plan, benefit limits, conditions and exclusions may apply.
It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. You can find out more about our travel cover for tech gear and other high value items here. Make copies of all key documents such as, passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets, and keep them separate from the originals so you’ll have proof of purchase if the originals go missing. Exercise caution in crowded areas and on public transport; padlocking your bags to the luggage rack if you’re on an overnight train or bus is always a good idea.
You're going to find a variety of delicious food while traveling in Thailand, but food preparation standards can vary. Gastro and its unpleasant side effects are one of the more common medical complaints our travelers have experienced while in Thailand.
Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team can help you find a doctor, particularly useful in Thailand’s remote areas, where access to medical care is harder to come by. If your illness is serious, the team can arrange for an emergency evacuation. Hospitals in Thailand (especially around Bangkok or Phuket) are well-equipped to treat you even if they may seem less modern than facilities you’d find at home.
Here are some simple actions that can help in case of gastro:
It’s easy to rent a motorcycle, so it’s not surprising that we see everything from exhaust pipe burns to extreme injuries caused by crashes, which can sometimes be fatal.
If you choose to ride, be sure to select a travel insurance plan that covers motorbike and scooter use.
Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected, we may offer coverage for global travelers hurt in motorcycle accidents for:
For your coverage to take effect, certain conditions apply:
Traveler tip 3: if you’re intending to rent a car or motorbike you must check the licensing and local laws for the country you’re going to. You must also be adequately insured elsewhere, as you are not covered under this insurance for third party liability in respect of any mechanical or motorized vehicle.
If you need medical treatment, evacuation, or repatriation, you or a travel companion MUST contact our 24-hour Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible. Limits and exclusions to coverage will apply so read your policy carefully for full details.

As featured in:
When looking for a mix of thrills, adventure and breath-taking natural landscapes, rock climbing delivers on all three. With so many top rock climbing destinations globally such as the Dolomites in Italy, Kalymnos in Greece, and Yosemite National Park in the USA, adrenaline junkies don’t have to look far.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber you may want to consider travel insurance as rock climbing can test your physical and mental abilities.
Insurance is essential if you are injured, severe weather derails your trip, or your equipment is lost or damaged.
World Nomads covers most rock climbing activities whether it is an indoor rock climbing day with friends or a week away at Yosemite National Park. However, we will not be able to cover you for rock climbing over 6,000 metres (19,685 feet) or if you plan on free soloing.
Depending on your Country of Residence and whether you’ve selected the Standard or Explorer plan, we may offer coverage for rock climbing for the following:
Residents of some countries may require an upgrade to include certain rock climbing activities and at certain altitudes.
While there are many activities available on the Standard Plan, those feeling adventurous can upgrade to the Explorer Plan, which offers higher benefits and cover for a broader range of activities and sports.
Travel insurance tip: to have cover for an adventure sport or activity, you may need to add it to your policy or select a plan with more benefits/coverage when you buy and pay the extra premium, depending on your Country of Residence. Remember, you can’t upgrade your coverage after you buy, so it’s important to get this right on the first go.
Travel insurance is designed for many reasons, for example if extreme weather derails your rock climbing trip, However, there are specific reasons why it’s important for a rock climbing trip. World Nomads offers coverage (up to the policy limits) for:

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations & exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

You may be weighing up the pros and cons of travel insurance for your next trip overseas, especially if you’ve never used it before. With Coronavirus adding an extra level of uncertainty, now could be the right time to consider travel insurance.
World Nomads offers insurance for travelers aged between 18 and 69. Our policies are available to travelers from more than 100 countries worldwide. You can get a quote online and be covered in no time.
If you’ve never had the need for travel insurance but you are thinking about buying it for your next trip, some of the scenarios where it may help include:
Get a doctor to approve your fit to travel: know your own medical needs, for example, whether you have pre-existing medical condition(s) that may invalidate your cover. You may need to have a doctor’s sign off that you’re fit to travel, for example, if you’re pregnant and having pregnancy-related complications or if you’re unsure about a specific medical condition.
Research all your travel destinations: always do your research on the countries or regions you plan to visit. Check government travel advisories as they can change rapidly. Check out our travel alerts, and health organizations advisories, such as the World Health Organization.
Take time out to read the fine print: check your policy’s benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions to ensure you are getting the right level of cover for your travel plans and destinations to cover any potential claims. You can always get in touch with the Customer Service team who can help answer any questions.
Ensure all activities and sports are covered: our plans include cover for more than 200 activities globally, from backpacking to kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping, but not all are covered under every plan – you can find out what is available for your Country of Residence here. You may need to pay an additional premium for higher-risk activities or choose a different plan. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip.
We’re here to help in case of emergency: make sure to know what to do in case of an emergency, which you can discuss with our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.
For many first-time buyers, buying travel insurance can be daunting and confusing. At World Nomads, we have made choosing a travel insurance plan less time-consuming and stressful by offering two travel insurance plans with different levels of cover depending on your travel needs.
Standard Plan: includes a range of benefits such as overseas medical, coverage for your belongings, pre-trip cancellation and certain adventure activities.
Explorer Plan: has all the benefits of a Standard Plan and a few more, but it is more expensive.
Check out our Standard vs Explorer article for information on coverage, benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions.
With a World Nomads policy, you can buy cover anytime, anywhere. Plus, if you decide to stay longer somewhere or want to change direction on a whim, we are happy to extend your policy as long as it’s done before the end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.
Traveler tip: if you buy a policy while traveling overseas, you must wait 72 hours before any cover is activated. The maximum duration available for any policy, including extensions, is 12 months from the start date.
We offer cover for some Coronavirus-related events, however level of coverage under our Standard and Explorer Plans will depend on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected.
If you are diagnosed with Coronavirus while overseas, your benefits may include:
Some of our Explorer plans offer cover for some additional Coronavirus-related insured events, such as cancellation following a COVID-19 diagnosis, to assist our travelers.
To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
You can also buy away from home or buy more cover if you extend your trip. Plus, you can claim online anytime, anywhere in the world.
