Whether you're planning to sail the crystal waters of the Galapagos Islands or keep pace with bottlenose dolphins along the Fumba Peninsula in Zanzibar, you're guaranteed an ocean adventure. But whenever you're surrounded by water, you should be prepared for the unexpected.
Along with your boat shoes, boating license, and guide to nautical terminology, it's worth considering bringing travel insurance* along. Having it in your (waterproof) pocket could help if you were to fracture your finger hoisting a sail or lose your wallet to the churning white caps in a squall.
From pre-trip medical support and car rental protection to cancel for any reason coverage, and even pet kenneling benefits if your return trip is delayed, we’ve got your back. Our plans cover inclement weather under certain circumstances (say, a snowstorm cancels your flight or a hurricane wipes out your hotel), including trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay coverage due to a variety of reasons, including natural disasters.
Here’s what you need to know about travel insurance for sailing.
When you're sailing, you can navigate the storied inlets of the French Riviera or British Virgin Islands, using the wind as your guide. But even as a seasoned sailor, you don't want to be caught up the creek without a paddle (or, in this case, a mast and jib). Here are a few benefits covered in World Nomads plans for inland sailing and coastal waters, from Trinidad and Tobago to coastal Maine:
Besides sailing, World Nomads covers over 250 other sports, activities and experiences, including on island and coastal waters, such as: parasailing, hydro foiling, water skiing, kiteboarding, scuba diving, jet skiing and more.
The coverage and the maximum benefit limits of your specific activity depends on which plan you buy. The list of covered sports and activities should help you decide on whether to buy a Standard, Explorer, Epic or Annual plan, as they have different levels of coverage. You can't upgrade your coverage after you purchase a plan, so it's important to get this right on the first go.
Are you traveling long-term? Setting sail repeatedly throughout the year? You can buy always more travel insurance when abroad (waiting periods may apply) even if you don't have a return ticket. World Nomads plans offer coverage for up to 180 days at a time with the Standard, Explorer, and Epic plans. And if you plan to take numerous trips during the year, then the Annual Multi-Trip plan could be best for you, with a maximum trip length of 45 days.
Not every day is smooth sailing, but if you check the weather forecast, you can avoid some choppy waters. The same is true for travel insurance: if you know what's excluded beforehand, you'll be better equipped to navigate any unexpected losses. And sorry, we may not be able to cover you for:
With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance before you go or when you're already traveling, anytime, anywhere, 24-hours a day. Fill out a quick form and get an instant quote.

Ditch the tech and relax to the rhythm of a wilderness camping trip. From stargazing in Canada’s Jasper National Park to sleeping under the stars on Australia’s Whitsunday Islands, you’ll experience more of everything on a camping break.
If you are injured or become ill travel insurance can help you find medical treatment in a foreign country and take the sting out of unexpected medical costs. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected, World Nomads may offer coverage (up to the policy limits) for:
Both our Standard Plan and Explorer Plan offer cover for level 1 sports and adventure activities such as camping, hiking and mountain biking up to 4,500 meters (14,763 feet), or river tubing, kayaking and bungee jumping.
For Kiwis looking for more adventurous pursuits, you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re planning on camping, hiking or mountain biking up to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) or if you’re abseiling or rafting. Specify all the activities you’re planning on your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your Policy Wording for details or contact us.
If that dawn hike didn’t quite go to plan and you need a doctor urgently, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. They can help direct you to the nearest medical centre or arrange emergency transport to the most appropriate facility and coordinate payment directly with the hospital (provided cover has been confirmed by us). For general out-patient treatment that’s unlikely to exceed US$725, keep all your receipts so you can make a claim under your policy for reimbursement.
The Explorer Plan also has cover for the rental insurance excess if you’re involved in a motor accident or if your rental car is damaged or stolen, or if you lose the rental key.
Travel Insurance Tip 1: check you have any relevant paperwork as you’ll likely be asked to provide proof for several things such as entry permits for countries you’ll be visiting, special tourist visas, digital COVID-19 certificates, proof of vaccinations and a negative PCR test, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.
Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (such as camping in an area that is against local authority warnings). Some things we don’t cover include:
Travel Insurance Tip 2: before you head off into the wilderness, follow the camping regulations that apply to that region or country. If you unknowingly cross into another country that is not on your certificate of insurance, it could affect your coverage.
This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
You can also buy away from home or buy more cover if you extend your trip. Plus, you can claim online anytime, anywhere in the world.
