Costa Rica is an intriguing destination, but like any country there are risks involved. That is why it is a requirement that travelers show proof of travel insurance to gain entry.
With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance with two levels of cover – Standard and Explorer – as soon as your trip is locked in and you're ready to go, or while you're on the road traveling around Costa Rica. Please be aware that each plan has different benefits, limits, and sub-limits.
Note: All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what you are claiming for, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.
Our plans include cover for:
- Emergency medical coverage and evacuation: if you fall ill or are injured during your travels, we may offer cover for surgery and hospital costs, prescribed medicines, and emergency medical transport. If you are in the jungle, get bitten by something and the nearest treatment centre is two hours away, medical evacuation will come in handy. You must call the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team, before incurring any medical costs.
- Trip delays or cancellation: flying to Costa Rica may require a stopover. If you miss a connecting flight or face unexpected delays and cancellations, we may cover you for transportation, lodging or personal care items. Benefit limits apply and delays must be more than six hours.
- Activities: World Nomads has cover for more than 150 activities. For a high-risk activity, such as ziplining, you’ll need to be with a professional, qualified and licensed guide, instructor or operator.
- Baggage and personal belongings: if your baggage or belongings are stolen, damaged or destroyed you may be able to claim costs. Baggage delays may also be covered, so long as delays are more than 24 hours.

How to get the most out of your insurance if you’re planning a visit to Costa Rica?
Depending on where you’re traveling from, flying to Costa Rica may require a stopover which can lend itself to tight turn arounds of connecting flights, lost luggage, and bad weather causing unexpected flight cancellations.
And that’s not all you need to consider, although beautiful, this tropical haven is in an active earthquake, hurricane, and volcano zone, and the mountainous landscape is prone to landslides. World Nomads offers cover for natural disasters, but cover will depend on your Country of Residence and varies between plans. We can assist with all these situations and the right policy can go a long way to reducing the stress involved in international travel.
What to look for out when traveling to Costa Rica?
In Costa Rica, road conditions are often poor, with potholes and inadequate signage, and crime does occur.
When it comes to beach safety, currents can be dangerous and many beaches are unsupervised by lifeguards and lack signage advising of unsafe conditions. If you are a digital nomad, be mindful of your tech security.
If you’re hiring a car, our Explorer Plan includes rental car excess. Cover is also available for the cost of replacing rental car keys if they get lost, stolen or damaged during the rental period. You must have a valid licence from your country of residence for the class of vehicle you’re driving overseas, regardless of local laws. You must also comply with local laws of the country you’re driving in.
Note: travel insurance doesn’t replace the need to have a signed rental vehicle agreement or damage waiver in place.
If you find yourself in a crisis, the World Nomads 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team is available for roadside assistance referrals or locations of nearby hospitals, medical providers or pharmacies. The team can also help if you’re having trouble getting by in a language you don’t know.
Traveler tip: Costa Rica grants visas to digital nomads. The visa allows foreign nationals and their families to live and work there for at least 12 months, with the possibility of a further year-long renewal. The visa allows exemption from income tax, and a local bank account; this is a significant increase on the 90-day limit on tourist stays.
What's not covered
Some things we won’t not cover include:
- Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
- Any expenses which World Nomads or the Emergency Assistance Team determine are not medically necessary.
- Change of mind, disinclination, or reluctance to travel.
- Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a government Do Not Travel or Avoid Non-essential Travel warning issued by the US Department of State.
- Illness associated with a failure to comply with preventative measures for the region, as outlined by the World Health Organization, including obtaining relevant vaccinations. Refer to int for further information.

Do I need travel insurance for Mexico?
Your medical insurance back home may not work in Mexico and will not provide cover for such things as trip cancellation or trip interruption. While travel insurance isn’t required to enter Mexico, you’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against those unforeseen events like accidents, theft, bad weather and more.

Keep in mind that certain parts of Mexico are more dangerous than others. Before booking a ticket, make sure you are comfortable with the government-issued safety warnings. Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Mexico
With a country as big as Mexico, the healthcare system can be different city-to-city, region-to-region and may not be what you are familiar with back home. In small clinics, you may have to give your provider cash or credit card payment before being seen by a medical professional. Large hospitals may also have policies and procedures in place that require upfront payment or payment guarantees. The 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help you navigate the process.
The best thing you can do to protect yourself against emergency medical expenses, is to have travel insurance for your trip to Mexico.
In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team could help you find a reputable medical centre and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call us as soon possible.
A common ailment affecting travelers to Mexico are gastrointestinal disorders. In Mexico, travelers should not drink water straight from the tap without double checking that it’s been filtered. The same goes for ice in drinks. The water system is not the same as back home in Canada, and it could make you sick.
And, while many travelers recommend trying street food in Mexico, make sure you pick a cart that looks clean and doesn’t have food sitting out in the sun for too long. Simple common sense can save you a bad stomachache later on!

Travel insurance for lost or stolen bags in Mexico
One of the common claims we get is for lost or stolen bags in Mexico. Whether the airline lost your luggage, or your purse was stolen on the beach, these things do happen. We’re not saying it’s any worse in Mexico than other places, but it is common.If the airline damages or loses your checked bags, the first step is to try and remedy the situation with them. If that fails, your travel insurance for Mexico may provide reimbursement. Make sure you obtain a report and a letter of coverage or denial from the transportation carrier as you will need these when you submit your claim to us. You will also need to submit receipts or sales slips for all items claimed under your baggage and personal effects coverage. You could be reimbursed for a change of clothes and basic toiletries until you are reunited with your stuff. If you have a snorkeling trip planned the next day (and you have a receipt to prove it), a new swimsuit could even be reimbursed.
If someone stole your bags in Mexico, the first step is to file a police report. Then, give the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team a call. You could be reimbursed for your stolen bags and personal belongings, minus depreciation and up to your policy limits. Certain qualifying factors would have to have occurred, as well. For instance, you couldn’t have left your belongings alone by the pool or have been intoxicated when the theft took place. It’s always best to read your policy details to understand what you will and won’t be covered for.
Travel insurance for cancelled or delayed trips to Mexico
Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. Maybe a hurricane destroys your resort or a loved one back in Canada gets sick. There are a variety of reasons why you might need to cancel or interrupt your trip to Mexico. Travel insurance does not cover everything. Hurricane season starts in June and ends in October, but the most likely months for a big storm are in August and September. The Yucatan Peninsula is especially at risk, but hurricanes have hit Baja California on the Pacific side. Storms are hard to predict, so the best thing you can do is protect yourself with travel insurance in case an unexpected hurricane threatens your trip. If you bought your travel insurance policy prior to the storm developing into a major event (when the storm system first becomes classified as a hurricane), your travel insurance for Mexico may provide cancellation protection if you are unable to occupy your destination residence because of a natural disaster. You may also be eligible for trip interruption benefits.
Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can also help protect you in case of emergencies back home in Canada. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your prepaid non-refundable (up to the policy limits) hotel expenses or airfare that you can no longer use. Travel insurance for crime in Mexico
Mexico is a beautiful place to visit year-around. However, there are certain cities and areas that you may want to reconsider visiting. Travelers worldwide are often targeted by criminals looking to take advantage of tourists who look out of place or are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. When in Mexico, be aware of your surroundings and stay away from areas known to have high crime.

However, crime can happen at any time. If this happens to you, and you’re injured in the assault or become a victim of theft, seek assistance from the local authorities. You’ll need to get a police report from the police immediately or as soon as reasonably possible, and a written confirmation of the loss from the hotel manager, tour guide, or transportation authorities, where relevant. What’s covered for camping?

- Emergency medical: camping and fresh air can be great for the body and soul but not if you get into an accident. To be eligible for the maximum benefit under your travel insurance policy, you must be covered under your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the full duration of your trip.
- Emergency ambulance transportation: your campground may be deep in the wilderness far from any type of hospital or medical help. Our coverage provides for the cost of local ground ambulance services (or local taxi fare if ambulances aren’t available.) Subject to pre-authorization from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team, our plans also cover the cost of an air ambulance to transport you to the nearest qualified medical service provider.
- Trip cancellation: an emergency can prevent you from going on your trip. With this benefit, you can get reimbursed for your non-refundable, pre-paid travel expenses such as your accommodations and flights if you cancel your trip for a covered reason.
- Adventure activities: if you’re planning on hitting the mountain biking trails or trekking to the top of craggy peaks, our plans can cover more than 150 adventure sports and activities, which you can read more about in our Help Center article. An additional premium may apply for certain adventure sports, activities, volunteer and work experiences.

While your trip will usually go off without a hitch, travel insurance is a backup, and even a life saver, if you or your loved ones run into trouble or are sick or injured. It can also save you a lot of money and headaches.
For example, if you’ve arrived in beautiful Barcelona but your checked-in bags have gone missing and are delayed by the carrier for more than 24 hours after your arrival, we’ll reimburse you (up to the benefit limits) to replace your essential clothing and toiletries while you wait for your baggage to be returned. Why should I consider travel insurance when travelling to Spain?
With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or while you're traveling (waiting periods apply); it’s entirely up to you.

What to look out for when traveling to Spain
Crime in Spain
While wandering around the beautiful streets of Barcelona, Madrid, Grenada, and Seville can be a dream come true you also need to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight. Pickpockets often work in teams of two or more and tend to target money and passports. Remember to keep a photocopy or scanned copy of your passport and other important documents separate somewhere safe. Nightlife in Ibiza and festivals
While it has almost become a rite of passage for many travelers to visit Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia to enjoy the nightlife and festivities, you should always make sure you are in control and don’t go overboard with alcohol and other substances. We want you to have fun but also to be alert to your surroundings. Buy your own drinks and always keep sight of them. Stick with your travel companions, especially at big festivals.
Cover for adventure activities and sports while in Spain
While many visit Spain for the tapas markets, bars, cafes and museums in Spain, there are also adventures to be had off the beaten track. Spain offers any number of outdoor activities and sports. Some great examples include:

Cover for some Coronavirus-related events
The level of coverage you’ll have for any Coronavirus (COVID-19)-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while traveling around Spain, your benefits may include:
- Medical costs including hospitalization
- Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.
Some of our Explorer plans also offer coverage for some additional COVID-19-related events to assist our travelers, such as cancellation following your diagnosis. Additionally all of our travelers have access to our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team, who can help you with access to local medical care.

Vaccinations
Check with a medical practitioner regarding the vaccinations you may need – especially if you’re traveling to other countries in addition to Spain – preferably at least eight weeks before you travel. Evidence of vaccination (in the form of a certificate) could be a requirement for entry to some countries. Take some time to learn about any specific health risks in the country(ies) you are visiting.

Why do I need travel insurance to go to Spain?
In the current travel landscape it’s becoming increasingly a case of when rather than if you’ll need travel insurance. With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or while you're travelling (waiting periods apply), it’s entirely up to you.
For example, you could be planning to travel around Spain for a fortnight, but your trip is cut short on day four due to events out of your control such as - an unforeseen travel delay, a natural catastrophe or a missed flight connection - as long as you’ve purchased the Explorer Plan you may be covered for a number of insured events as part of our trip interruption cover. Always check your Policy Wording carefully so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

Left home without travel insurance?
Travel insurance tip: always make sure you’ve done your research on not just on Spain, but each of the countries you’re planning to visit as there may be Irish government-imposed travel restrictions in place. If you decide to travel to a country on a ‘Do Not Travel’ or "Avoid Non-essential Travel' list then your World Nomads policy will provide cover for the reasons outlined in the warning. The Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) currently advises to avoid non-essential travel to many countries and territories in Europe due to coronavirus (COVID-19) risks. What to look out for when travelling to Spain
Crime in Spain
While wandering around the beautiful streets of Barcelona, Madrid, Grenada, and Seville can be a dream come true you also need to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight. Thieves often work in teams of two or more and tend to target money and passports. Remember to keep a photocopy or scanned copy of your passport and other important documents somewhere safe. Nightlife in Ibiza and festivals
While it has almost become a rite of passage for many Irish to visit Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia to hit its party spots and festivals, make sure you are in control and don’t go overboard with alcohol and other substances. We want you to have fun but also to be alert to your surroundings. Buy your own drinks and keep sight of them at all times. Stick with your travel buddies, especially at big festivals.
Cover for adventure activities and sports while in Spain
While many visit Spain for its Tapas markets, bars, cafes and museums in Spain, there are also adventures to be had off the beaten track. Spain offers any number of outdoor activities and sports. Some great examples include:

- Whitewater rafting in the South Coast of Spain

Note: always check your Policy Wording carefully to make sure all your chosen activities are covered. You may need to upgrade your level of cover for a specific activity when you purchase.
Health changes and cover for some Coronavirus-related events
As an Irish resident you are entitled to public healthcare in countries in the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland if you become ill or injured while on holiday or on a temporary stay of less than 3 months. Ensure that you get or renew your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you go, and remember, you need one for every person travelling in your group.
Please note that the EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It doesn’t cover medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or treatment of a non-urgent nature. Also, some private hospitals may not accept the EHIC, so you should check with the hospital administrator beforehand and consider a travel insurance policy to fill any coverage gaps.

Vaccinations
Check with a medical practitioner regarding the vaccinations you may need – especially if you’re travelling to other countries in addition to Spain – and preferably at least eight weeks before you travel. Evidence of vaccination (in the form of a certificate) could be a requirement for entry to some countries. Take some time to learn about any specific health risks in the country(ies) you are visiting. Without the recommended vaccinations, your cover may not apply.

What to look out for when travelling to Spain

Will I need a Schengen Visa to go to Spain?
If you are a UK citizen travelling to Spain, you do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen Area if you’re staying for fewer than 90 days. But starting from 2025, you’ll need to apply for ETIAS visa authorisation to visit Spain and other EU states, which will allow you to visit the Schengen Area without a visa, even though the UK has left the EU. The exact date for when the ETIAS will be mandatory has not yet been announced.
Global Health Insurance Card
Most UK residents can no longer apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which ended in December 2020. Instead UK travellers must apply for the UK’s Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which offers cover for medical treatment in Schengen states. As the GHIC will not cover all treatment or mishaps, it is a good idea to get travel insurance that covers you for more extensive medical costs and lost luggage.
Vaccinations
Check with a medical practitioner regarding vaccinations you may need – especially if you’re travelling to other countries in addition to Spain - preferably at least eight weeks before you travel.
