Travel Insurance when visiting Thailand

Turquoise waters, vibrant culture, lush jungles and Tuk Tuks

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Thailand, with its white sand beaches, beautiful temples, and island hideaways is a top destination for Aussies looking to unwind. Although Thailand is a friendly country that welcomes many visitors each year, the unexpected can happen on a trip here, which is why you should consider buying travel insurance.

With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in and you're ready to go, or while you're on the road travelling around Thailand.

What’s Covered

World Nomads has two plans which cover an array of activities ranging from mountain biking to snorkelling, hiking, kayaking, surfing, scuba diving and more.  We can offer cover for other key events such as:

  • Medical evacuation and repatriation back to Australia
  • Cancellation/trip interruption
  • Emergency overseas medical
  • Delays or missed flights
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage
  • Travel delay/curtailment.

Why should I consider insurance coverage for Thailand?

World Nomads has two travel insurance plans to choose from, Standard and Explorer. Both plans can help if you end up in hospital with a bad case of food poisoning, or if you’ve had bags or valuables stolen. A worst-case scenario is if you are badly injured and need to be repatriated back to Australia, as this can be very costly.

Traveller tip 1: to travel to Thailand, you’ll need to seek permission to enter the country using the Royal Thai Government’s online platform – Thailand Pass. Requirements for a Thailand Pass include a vaccination certificate, a negative COVID test taken three days before departure and travel insurance with a minimum coverage of AUD$70,000.

What to look out for when travelling around Thailand

Beware of theft and pickpockets

While Thailand is a relatively safe place to travel, there is always the chance that you could be the victim of a theft. Make sure you keep a copy of your receipts, as you’ll need proof of ownership to make a claim should your items get stolen. All World Nomads travel insurance plans will have some baggage coverage if your bags and valuables are stolen or damaged. However, with any insurance plan, benefit limits, conditions and exclusions may apply.

Keep an eye on your gear 24/7

It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. You can find out more about our travel cover for tech gear and other high value items hereMake copies of all key documents such as passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets, and keep them separate from the originals so you’ll have proof of purchase if the originals go missing. Exercise caution in crowded areas and on public transport. Padlocking your bags to the luggage rack if you’re on an overnight train or bus is always a good idea.

Traveller tip 2: if you’re a victim of theft, get a Property Irregularity Report or other incident report from the carrier so you can submit it with your claim, as well as a police report.

Surviving traveller's diarrhea

You're going to find a variety of delicious food while travelling in Thailand, but food preparation standards can vary. Gastro and its unpleasant side effects are one of the more common medical complaints our travellers have experienced in Thailand.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help you find a doctor, particularly useful in Thailand’s remote area, where access to medical care is harder to come by. If your illness is serious, the team can arrange for an emergency evacuation. Hospitals in Thailand (especially around Bangkok or Phuket) are well-equipped to treat you even if they may seem less modern than facilities you’d find at home.

Here are some simple actions that can help save you in case of gastro:

  • Always wash your hands before and after eating or use a hand sanitizer.
  • Never eat anything that's been sitting around, even for a short while.
  • Don't drink tap water in Thailand – stick to bottled, boiled, filtered, or treated water.
  • If you lose more fluids than you can keep down, seek help and use rehydration sachets.

Riding Motorbikes and Scooters

With so many novice riders on the road, it's not surprising that we see everything from exhaust pipe burns to extreme injuries caused by crashes, which can sometimes be fatal.

If you choose to ride, be sure to select a travel insurance plan that covers motorbike and scooter use.

World Nomads coverage for travellers hurt in motorcycle accidents may include:

  • Emergency medical expenses for treatment at the hospital or by a doctor at the local medical centre.
  • Evacuation to more suitable medical facility if it’s urgent, medically necessary and if you’re fit to travel.
  • Repatriation if you’re seriously ill or injured and unable to continue your trip.

For your coverage to take effect, certain conditions apply:

  • You must have a valid driver’s license from home and as required in the relevant country where you're travelling.
  • You need to comply with local laws and safety practices (wear a helmet, obey speed limits, and don’t drive drunk).

What do I do if I’m sick or injured and need assistance?

When it comes to any activity or sport, safety should always come first. Responsible behavior is vital for your health and safety. If you need emergency medical treatment or evacuation, you, or someone with you, should contact our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible. They will contact a suitable assistance or ambulance company and arrange medical care.

If you have a specific question about World Nomads insurance, please visit our online Help Center or contact us.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

What to do if I need to travel to a country with COVID-19 cases?

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

While there may be many valid reasons why you need to travel during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, when it comes to knowing what you are or are not covered for can be tricky.

That's why we've put together this guide to help you navigate travel during Coronavirus, with tips on trip planning, selecting travel insurance and more.

Before your trip

1. Are your intended destinations open for travel?

While we would like to sell travel insurance to every country or region, in some instances this will not be the case. Please be aware that some of our policy coverage depends on government travel advisories and your coverage could be invalidated if you travel against government advice.

For example, if a government issues warnings against travel to a specific region or country due to COVID-19 cases, your policy may be invalidated depending on your Country of Residence. This travel warning does not apply to US residents.

Many travel bubbles can change at a moment’s notice when COVID-19 cases go up or down and may cause a big headache if you’ve booked tours, have connecting flights, and need to cancel or rearrange your flight and accommodation dates.

If you’ve purchased a World Nomads policy and a government travel warning is given after you bought your policy and before you left home, and you have no option but to cancel your trip, you may be covered for the costs incurred of cancellation.

Coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

Don’t forget to read the policy wording when you hit the quote button as all plans are different – don’t just assume you’re covered in every situation, as conditions or exclusions may apply.

2. Be aware of the risks of traveling during COVID-19

Regardless of where you may be traveling to, when it comes to COVID-19, you will need to abide by any country or regions’ rules. If you don’t do your research and prepare in advance, you’ll be in for a few stress-related headaches.

Be aware that we won’t cover you if you decide to travel abroad and you buy or extend a policy when you are aware of circumstances that may impact your travel plans, or if you knowingly put yourself in a risky situation, such as:

  • You know you will be unable to avoid close contact with a case of Coronavirus during your trip.
  • You are medically unfit to travel.
  • You travel against medical advice when you know you will have to consult a medical practitioner during your trip.

3. Check your insurance for all the details around cover for Coronavirus-related events

As the world continues to be affected by various COVID-19 strains, it is trickier than ever to plan a trip overseas without potentially getting denied entry because of a positive COVID-19 test or having to go into mandatory quarantine due to a confirmed case of Coronavirus.

Some of our plans have always had coverage for sudden sicknesses such as COVID-19, but more recently, we've added insurance coverage for some Coronavirus-related events to the plans that don't have them. To find out more about coverage, terms, conditions and benefits check out our Coronavirus cover article.

Our Coronavirus-related coverage will vary depending on your Country of Residence and which plan you have selected.

4. Check you have all paperwork

Before you head off on your trip, you'll need to gather evidence of your planned travel and accommodation costs, medical documents that show proof of vaccination or negative COVID tests and which confirm you’ve got a clean bill of health. If you need to make a claim after you’ve returned home, you may need to provide proof of:

  • COVID-19 vaccinations and PCR tests.
  • Any special tourist visas.
  • Mandatory travel or health insurance
  • Ownership of belongings with receipts.
  • Any supporting police or carrier reports when theft occurs.
  • Any evidence of accommodation, airline and tour operator related charges.
  • Any medical evidence especially if you or your loved ones had an accident, fell ill, or had to quarantine and had to use a credit card for extra costs and wish to be reimbursed.

5. Check travel advisories

If you’re planning on traveling abroad or transiting through or near a country or region with a high number of COVID-19 cases, please check any travel and health advice issued by your Country of Residence and monitor the situation through local and international media as it may affect your travel insurance policy.

6. If you get a positive test at the airport

If you or someone in your traveling party tests positive for COVID-19, you should isolate immediately and contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as well as a local medical practitioner for advice on what to do.

You should also contact your airline or travel provider to reschedule your travel plans and seek advice on whether you can continue travelling. You may need to go into mandatory quarantine depending on the country that you’re in.

7. If you unexpectedly need to quarantine while traveling

If you need to change your travel arrangements because you’ve contracted COVID-19 or been deemed a close contact and you need to go into mandatory quarantine, in the first instance contact your airline, cruise company or travel agent for assistance and to reschedule your flights. Refer to your policy wording for more details or contact us to discuss your plans before making any changes.

Also, if you are feeling unwell and need urgent medical assistance contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible.

Depending on your Country of Residence, and as part of our Coronavirus Travel Costs benefits (Explorer Plan only), if you need to go into mandatory quarantine we will pay for your reasonable additional travel, meals, and accommodation, including in-room entertainment.

You must provide satisfactory written evidence of the timing and circumstances of the quarantine event and the actual costs incurred. Where applicable, this includes written advice from the attending medical practitioner or local health authority confirming that your quarantine is necessary.

8. If you get COVID during your trip

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas and it’s not considered an ‘existing medical condition’ under our policy, and there is not a warning against travel in place for COVID-19 in the location you are currently visiting, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance Team, who can help you access local medical care.
  • Overseas medical costs including hospitalization.
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician, and up to the relevant benefit limit.

Depending on your Country of Residence you could have access to Coronavirus Travel Costs benefits (Explorer Plan only) for certain events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses, as well as additional benefits for healthcare workers, residential care workers and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave cancelled by their employer due to COVID.

You can check out our Coronavirus cover article which has more details, including benefit limits and exclusions.

After your trip

9. Claims tips – gather the right documents for your claim

If you make a claim, you must show the event was unexpected and occurred after you purchased the policy and after you booked or paid for any travel arrangements.

In the event of a claim covered by your policy, you must do everything reasonable you can to reduce the cost of the claim and provide all supporting documentation of the event and expenses incurred.

If you intend to submit a claim, please complete the claim form, and if you have questions about what's covered and not covered, just ask us.

Essential tips for first-time World Nomads travel insurance buyers

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

You may be weighing up the pros and cons of travel insurance for your next trip overseas, especially if you’ve never used it before. With Coronavirus adding an extra level of uncertainty, now could be the right time to consider travel insurance.

World Nomads offers insurance for travelers aged between 18 and 69. Our policies are available to travelers from more than 100 countries worldwide. You can get a quote online and be covered in no time.

If you’ve never had the need for travel insurance but you are thinking about buying it for your next trip, some of the scenarios where it may help include:

  • If you need to cancel or curtail your trip because you’re sick.
  • If you want your tech gear, valuables, and baggage covered.
  • If you need emergency treatment during your trip due to an unexpected illness or injury.
  • If you plan to do several activities and sports and need that extra level of cover.
  • If you end up stuck at the airport for an extended period due to a travel delay or trip interruption.

What to look out for when considering travel insurance

Get a doctor to approve your fit to travel: know your own medical needs, for example, whether you have pre-existing medical condition(s) that may invalidate your cover. You may need to have a doctor’s sign off that you’re fit to travel, for example, if you’re pregnant and having pregnancy-related complications or if you’re unsure about a specific medical condition.

Research all your travel destinations: always do your research on the countries or regions you plan to visit. Check government travel advisories as they can change rapidly. Check out our travel alerts, and health organizations advisories, such as the World Health Organization.

Take time out to read the fine print: check your policy’s benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions to ensure you are getting the right level of cover for your travel plans and destinations to cover any potential claims. You can always get in touch with the Customer Service team who can help answer any questions.

Ensure all activities and sports are covered: our plans include cover for more than 200 activities globally, from backpacking to kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping, but not all are covered under every plan – you can find out what is available for your Country of Residence here. You may need to pay an additional premium for higher-risk activities or choose a different plan. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip.

We’re here to help in case of emergency: make sure to know what to do in case of an emergency, which you can discuss with our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.

I have never bought World Nomads travel insurance. Why should I consider it?

For many first-time buyers, buying travel insurance can be daunting and confusing. At World Nomads, we have made choosing a travel insurance plan less time-consuming and stressful by offering two travel insurance plans with different levels of cover depending on your travel needs.

Standard Plan: includes a range of benefits such as overseas medical, coverage for your belongings, pre-trip cancellation and certain adventure activities.

Explorer Plan: has all the benefits of a Standard Plan and a few more, but it is more expensive.

Check out our Standard vs Explorer article for information on coverage, benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions.

Can I buy or extend my travel insurance while overseas?

With a World Nomads policy, you can buy cover anytime, anywhere. Plus, if you decide to stay longer somewhere or want to change direction on a whim, we are happy to extend your policy as long as it’s done before the end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Traveler tip: if you buy a policy while traveling overseas, you must wait 72 hours before any cover is activated. The maximum duration available for any policy, including extensions, is 12 months from the start date.

Does World Nomads travel insurance include cover for Coronavirus-related events?

We offer cover for some Coronavirus-related events, however level of coverage under our Standard and Explorer Plans will depend on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected.

If you are diagnosed with Coronavirus while overseas, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance Team, who can help you access local medical care.
  • Medical costs including hospitalization.
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending medical practitioner.

Some of our Explorer plans offer cover for some additional Coronavirus-related insured events, such as cancellation following a COVID-19 diagnosis, to assist our travelers.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

Things to look out for when buying travel insurance:

  • Make sure you correctly choose the right trip dates, age limit, and level of cover.
  • Ensure all your destinations are covered.
  • Make sure you understand what a pre-existing medical condition is under our policy.
  • Some activities and sports may require extra level of cover or may not be covered.
  • Make sure you clearly understand the benefit limits and the excess as per the level of cover you’ve selected.
  • Understand that there will be General Exclusions in your cover for which you won’t be covered under any circumstances.
  • Make copies of travel documents and keep receipts in case you need to make a claim.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Did you know travel insurance covers...

You can also buy away from home or buy more cover if you extend your trip. Plus, you can claim online anytime, anywhere in the world.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

Travel Insurance when visiting the Caribbean

Essential travel insurance tips

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Your Caribbean adventure could be trekking through rainforests in Dominica or taking a splash in the waters of Aruba. With its countless island destinations, Irish travellers will have the time of their lives when they visit the Caribbean. You may like to consider purchasing travel insurance first just in case your island adventure takes a turn for the worst.

What’s Covered

World Nomads offer travel insurance for Irish travellers who can choose between the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan as they both offer different levels of cover.

The following is a brief list of what we cover. Each policy has different conditions and limits, please check your policy wording for a thorough list of what is and is not covered.

Overseas emergency medical: cover is offered for hospitalisation (both inpatient and outpatient), as well as treatment at medical centres in the place where you are staying. You must notify our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team in the first instance. They will confirm if the treatment is medically necessary and advise you on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities (particularly in remote areas where access to medical care can be tricky) and monitor your medical treatments if needed to make sure you are given proper care.

Overseas emergency dental: must relate to an injury that you sustain on your overseas trip. There is no cover for routine treatment such as regular dental cleans or check-ups.

Baggage cover: if your baggage or personal belongings are lost or damaged during your trip, then you may claim for these. However, claims without supporting documentation such as police reports and receipts may not be covered. Benefit limits, conditions and exclusions apply.

Extended stays: if you decide to lengthen your overseas holiday, you may extend your travel insurance up to a maximum of 12 months past the start date listed on your Certificate of Insurance.

Medical evacuation and repatriation: we offer emergency medical transport and repatriation back to Ireland if medically necessary and authorised by our emergency medical assistance team.

Cover for Coronavirus-related events: Irish travellers may be covered for their non-refundable travel expenses if they are forced to cancel their holiday plans due to a Coronavirus diagnosis. For more information, please read our Coronavirus cover article, which includes all the details, including benefit limits, conditions, and exclusions.

How to get the most out of your insurance when visiting the Caribbean

We recognise that you may have different activities and experiences in mind for your overseas adventures.

Our Standard Plan provides cover for all the main risks facing overseas travellers such as illness, injuries, and theft. While the Explorer Plan offers everything that the Standard Plan does, the benefit limits and/or sub-limits are higher, and a wider range of activities are included.

For instance, if you wanted to go Scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, then you might want to check out all the different levels of coverage that we offer, and to find out what conditions or exclusions apply for this underwater activity.

Though both our Standard and Explorer plans include benefits for Scuba diving, each plan has a different level of coverage and may exclude certain types of diving or dives of a certain depth. Be sure to check your policy for exclusions, such as search-and-rescue missions.

Besides Scuba diving, World Nomads offers cover for 150+ adventure activities including:

  • Surfing.
  • Hiking.
  • Backpacking.
  • Kayaking.
  • Sandboarding.
  • Snorkelling.

If your favourite sport isn’t on the list get in touch with our Customer Assistance Team and they will let you know if we cover it. Be aware that an upgrade for certain activities and sports may be required.

What to look out for when travelling around the Caribbean

Like all holiday destinations, there are certain dangers that can present a challenge for anybody travelling through the Caribbean. Check your policy for all the conditions and exclusions associated with the following risks:

Extreme weather: this island region is sometimes struck by fierce storms that damage hotels and disrupt lines of transport.

Travel insurance tip: if your booked accommodation becomes uninhabitable due to extreme weather conditions, you may be eligible to claim for alternative accommodation and transport expenses up to the policy limit (Explorer Plan).

Crime: thieves are known to prey on unsuspecting tourists whose bags may be snatched from them in street mugging incidents or sneakily taken whilst their attention is diverted elsewhere.

Travel insurance tip: if you are the victim of a theft, you must obtain a written police report as soon as you can. Where possible, provide witness details along with any photographs, comply with all the conditions of any issuing body and provide receipts for all costs incurred, or we will not pay for any claim you make.

What’s not covered

Below is a brief list of what we do not cover. Please check your policy wording for a full list of benefit limits, exclusions, as well as the terms and conditions.

  • Pre-existing conditions as explained in your policy.
  • Treatment that you had been having in Ireland, before travelling to the Caribbean.
  • Unattended luggage and other personal items that are damaged, lost or stolen.
  • Expenses that other organisations such as hotels or transport companies are responsible for paying.
  • If you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Failing to comply with official organisations and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team to repatriate you back to Ireland.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Travel Insurance when visiting the Caribbean

Essential travel insurance tips

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Why spend your next holiday on the couch doing Sudoku puzzles, when you could be sipping cocktails watching the sun go down in Jamaica or Puerto Rico? With countless island destinations to choose from, you can explore the Caribbean’s verdant rainforests and white sand beaches.

Before you book your flight for this popular holiday destination, you might want to consider buying travel insurance first.

What’s covered?

For all the beauty in the Caribbean, there is also the possibility of running into unexpected trouble. The following are some examples of how travel insurance can help if the unexpected happens to you:

Overseas emergency medical: if you become sick or are injured then your travel insurance may cover your treatment, hospitalisation, and medication expenses. However, you must notify our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible. They will confirm if the treatment is medically necessary and advise you on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities (particularly in remote areas where access to medical care could be tricky) and monitor your medical treatments if needed to make sure you are given proper care.

Emergency medical evacuation: if you are injured and require emergency transport to the nearest hospital via ambulance or helicopter, then the transportation costs may be covered. You will need to check with our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team first.

Medical repatriation: we offer emergency medical repatriation back to the UK if medically necessary and authorised by our emergency medical assistance team.

Baggage cover: if your bags or other personal items are stolen, delayed, or go missing during your holiday, report the incident to the local police and get a Loss Report from them, as you’ll need to include this as supporting evidence, along with your receipts for these items, when submitting your claim. Benefit limits, conditions and exclusions apply.

Extended stays: you may extend your travel insurance policy past the expiration date if you’re planning to stay longer in the Caribbean. This will need to be done prior to the current expiration date of your policy and can be extended up to 12 months from the start date of your policy.

Rental car excess (Explorer Plan): if you have your rental car stolen or damaged, then you may be covered for the excess amount if you have purchased the Explorer Plan. Benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions apply.

Cover for Coronavirus-related events: British travellers may be covered for medically necessary expenses if they get Coronavirus in the Caribbean. To find out what cover applies to you, read our Coronavirus cover article, which has all the details, including benefit limits, conditions, and exclusions.

How to get the most out of your insurance when visiting the Caribbean

The policy that you ultimately choose should depend on what type of Caribbean holiday you are planning to have. World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans, the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan.

Both plans offer travel insurance essentials such as trip cancellation cover, baggage cover and emergency medical evacuation cover. However, the Explorer Plan offers higher benefit limits and/or sub-limits than the Standard Plan, as well as cover for a wider range of activities.

For example, if you plan to go hiking in the mountains of St Lucia, then you might want to check out our different levels of cover for hiking in case you are injured. World Nomads offers different levels of cover for hiking depending on the altitude, these include:

  • 3,000 metres (Level 1).
  • 4,500 metres (Level 2).
  • 6,000 metres (Level 3).

Note: make sure you check your policy for specific exclusions, such as search-and-rescue missions.

Besides hiking, World Nomads offers cover for 150+ adventure activities including:

  • Surfing.
  • Backpacking.
  • Scuba diving.
  • Kayaking.
  • Sandboarding.
  • Snorkelling.

If your favourite sport isn’t on the list, get in touch with our Customer Assistance Team and they will let you know if we cover it. Be aware that an upgrade for certain activities and sports may be required.

What to look out for when travelling around the Caribbean

Here are some common problems that travellers can encounter when visiting the region:

Extreme weather: well known as a sun-drenched paradise with a year-round warm climate, the Caribbean Islands are occasionally lashed by powerful tropical storms that wreak widespread destruction.

Travel insurance tip: if a hurricane, flood, or another natural disaster damages the hotel or hostel that you are booked to stay at, then you may be covered for transport expenses to and accommodation with an alternative provider up to the policy limit. (Explorer Plan).

Crime: travellers to the Caribbean are sometimes the targets of bag snatchings and other types of crimes, both petty and more serious.

Travel insurance tip: if you are the victim of a theft, you must obtain a written police report as soon as you can. Where possible, provide witness details along with any photographs, comply with all conditions of any issuing body and provide receipts for all costs incurred, or we will not pay for any claim you make.

What’s not covered?

Below is a brief list of what we do not cover. Please check your policy wording for a full list of benefit limits, exclusions, as well as the terms and conditions.

  • Any pre-existing conditions, unless otherwise stated in your policy.
  • Travelling to or staying in a country that the British Government has issued a public directive instructing travellers to avoid travel.
  • Being under the influence of alcohol or any illegal substances.
  • If you are acting in an irresponsible manner or not complying with local laws.
  • Disobeying your treating doctor’s directions and/or those of our Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unguarded.

The Caribbean, with its many island destinations such as Jamaica, St Lucia, and the Dominican Republic, has always been a mecca for international travelers who dream of escaping chilly climates and their frantic way of life. If you’re planning a trip to this unique part of the globe, considering travel insurance can provide support if your Caribbean holiday suddenly goes awry.

What’s covered

World Nomads travel insurance provides cover for illness, injury, or damage to your personal belongings. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you have selected, you may be covered for:

Overseas emergency medical: if you’ve had an injury or need urgent medical attention and require a medical centre or hospital, you must contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team in the first instance. They will confirm if the treatment is medically necessary and advise you on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities (particularly in remote areas where access to medical care can be tricky) and monitor your medical treatments if needed to make sure you’re given proper care.

Medical evacuation and repatriation: we offer emergency medical transport and repatriation back to your Country of Residence if medically necessary and authorised by our emergency medical assistance team.

Baggage cover: if your baggage or other personal belongings are lost or damaged during your trip, then you may claim for these. However, claims without supporting documentation such as police reports and receipts may not be covered. Benefit limits, conditions and exclusions apply.

Extended stays:
if you are having way too much fun on your Caribbean holiday and choose to stay longer, you may also extend your travel insurance for a maximum of one year past the start date of your policy.

Coverage for some Coronavirus (COVID-19) related events: if you are forced to cancel your holiday plans due to being diagnosed as having Coronavirus by your treating doctor, then you may claim for any non-refundable travel expenses. To find out what cover applies to you, read our Coronavirus cover article, which has all the details, including benefit limits, conditions, and exclusions.

How to get the most out of your insurance when visiting the Caribbean

The two travel insurance plans that we offer are the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. Both offer cover for injuries, illness, trip cancellation expenses and theft. However, the Explorer Plan offers higher benefit limits and/or sub-limits than the Standard Plan and cover for a wider selection of activities.

For example, if you plan to go Scuba diving in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, then you might want to consider our levels of coverage for Scuba diving in case you are involved in a Scuba diving accident.

Though both our Standard and Explorer plans include benefits for Scuba diving, each plan has a different level of coverage and may exclude certain types of diving or dives of a certain depth. Be sure to check your policy for exclusions, such as unguided dives or search-and-rescue missions.

Besides Scuba diving, World Nomads offers cover for 150+ adventure activities including:

  • Surfing.
  • Hiking.
  • Backpacking.
  • Kayaking.
  • Sandboarding.
  • Snorkelling.

If your favorite sport is not on the list get in touch with our Customer Assistance Team and they will let you know if we cover it. Be aware that an upgrade for certain activities and sports may be required.

What to look out for when traveling around the Caribbean

The Caribbean is a tropical playground where travelers from all over the world gravitate to enjoy the lush wilderness, white sand beaches and laid-back vibes. However, getting sick or injured could prove to be very costly, you may want to consider purchasing travel insurance before you go.

Here are some common problems that travelers can encounter when visiting the region:

Extreme weather: well known for being a sun-drenched paradise with year-round warm climates, the Caribbean Islands are occasionally lashed by powerful tropical storms that wreak widespread destruction.

Travel insurance tip: if your hotel is damaged by a natural catastrophe, you may be covered for transport expenses as well as accommodation in a different hotel up to the policy limit.

Theft: thieves are known to prey on unsuspecting tourists whose bags may be snatched from them in street mugging incidents or sneakily taken whilst their attention is diverted elsewhere.

Travel insurance tip: if any of your belongings are stolen, you must obtain a written police report as soon as you can. Where possible, provide witness details as well as photographs, comply with all conditions of any issuing body and provide receipts for all costs incurred, or we will not pay for any claim that you make.

What’s not covered?

Below is a brief list of what we do not cover. Please check your policy wording for a full list of benefit limits, exclusions as well as the terms and conditions.

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in the policy wording.
  • Any medical treatment, medication, or hospitalization for a non-urgent condition. Examples could include cosmetic surgery, general check-ups, or other elective surgeries.
  • Theft, damage, or loss of items that were unattended.
  • Expenses that other organisations, including hotels and airlines are liable for.
  • If you were breaking the law or acting in a careless manner.
  • Failing to comply with official organisations and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team to repatriate you back to your country of residence.
  • Traveling to or staying in a country that the government in your country of residence has declared an official travel ban on or warned against non-essential travel.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Travel Insurance for a trip to Portugal

Learn more about World Nomads travel insurance for your travel across the Old Continent.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Thousands of Americans plan bucket-list vacations to Portugal each year to enjoy the enticing Douro Valley wine region, impressive architecture in cities like Porto or Lisbon, sandy-white coastlines like Camilo Beach in the Algarve and exciting foodie experiences. As you’re making your travel plans for Portugal, it’s a good idea to purchase a travel insurance policy from World Nomads to protect your trip investment, your well-being and your baggage.

Your World Nomads policy may include coverage for:

When planning a vacation to Portugal, common setbacks American travelers can face are lost or delayed luggage and unforeseen medical issues, including COVID-19 illnesses.

What’s included in your World Nomads travel insurance policy for a trip to Portugal?

Lost, stolen or delayed baggage coverage

World Nomads may cover (up to the policy limits) the loss, theft or damage to your baggage or personal belongings depending on your specific situation. Here are more details:

Delayed baggage

Upon arriving to Lisbon to start your trip, if your luggage isn’t on the carousel at the airport, it can be very upsetting. But your World Nomads policy may provide coverage if your bags were lost in transit to Portugal for more than 12 hours. The first thing to do is file a report with your airline, and then keep your paperwork organized so you will have this documentation to file a claim. Your bag-delay benefits may provide reimbursement for a change of clothes and some personal care items until you are reunited with your luggage.

Stolen personal effects

Your personal belongings may be covered if stolen while vacationing in Portugal. If you are the victim of a crime, file a report with local police, your tour manager or hotel staff. Be sure to read your policy documents so you understand reimbursement guidelines. For example, if you are on a walking tour in Lisbon, and your camera gets stolen from your backpack while you’re strolling in a city square, you may be reimbursed. Read over your travel insurance policy so you understand how depreciation and exclusions may impact your claims.

To be best protected, keep your personal belongings close to you at all times. Keep valuables like credit cards and travel documents in a money belt or cross-body bag, and don’t draw attention by wearing flashy jewelry. Also, risky behavior that causes loss of property likely won’t be covered by travel insurance. For example, if you’re drinking wine in excess in Porto and leave your cell phone unsupervised at a bar, this probably won’t be reimbursable.

Overseas emergency medical coverage and benefits for COVID-19 related events

When traveling in Portugal, having overseas emergency medical insurance is very important in case you get injured or become ill. Your US based health insurance plan may not be accepted outside the US, so if you need medical attention you will have to pay out of pocket. With your World Nomads travel insurance policy in hand, if you break your wrist from a fall while hiking the Fisherman’s Trail from Porto Covo to Odeceixe, you could potentially be reimbursed for any medical care, imaging, hospital stays and medicine.

Regarding COVID-19, World Nomads Travel Protection Plan purchased by U.S. residents may provide coverage if you test positive for COVID-19. Benefits may cover emergency medical, emergency medical evacuation, trip delay and trip interruption coverage if you contract COVID-19 while traveling in Portugal.

If you need to cancel your trip due to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, your policy may cover loss of pre-paid, nonrefundable expenses such as flights, hotel rooms and excursions if your doctor says you can’t travel on your scheduled departure day because you’re diagnosed with COVID-19. A positive COVID test must be accompanied by 3rd party verification for claims documentation purposes. Verifiable proof of positive COVID test includes physician consultation, PCR lab results (includes name of patient, date, result) or proctored COVID test witnessed by a physician or nurse.

Access to 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team

Your World Nomads travel insurance plan includes a team of professionals who can help with many issues. If you’re experiencing a medical emergency, for example, we can provide a helping hand to direct you to a medical center, talk to doctors, arrange pre-authorization for treatment and even offer translation services. We may also be able to contact your family or friends back home to keep them updated on your condition.

Coverage for sports and recreational activities in Portugal

If you’re headed Minho in North Portugal to hike or trek in the mountains, or plan to snorkel in The Azores, World Nomads offers travel insurance coverage for 150+ activities and sports. Be sure to read your plan documents to see if your intended pursuits are covered. We have two policy options: Standard and Explorer. Activity coverage differs by plan. Be sure to compare options and select the plan that best covers the activities you plan to do while in Portugal.

Why it pays to have travel insurance

The last thing you want to do is think about all the things that might go wrong before or during  your trip, but crazy and unexpected things can and do happen. We have been around since 2002, offering simple and flexible travel insurance products and helping independent travelers like you.

We strongly believe you should consider travel insurance when planning your next trip, but don't just take our word for it – here's just a few examples of what our customers have to say about us.

Amazing customer service!

I’ve used World Nomads for quite a few years now and always found them to be very helpful, especially during the dubious covid years. But now I’m extra impressed because this week they’ve gone above and beyond to help me and I’m really grateful to Kasey and team for helping sort out a logistical nightmare. They were fast to respond and actually helped me find the best and cheapest option for me and my family. Thank you for actually taking the time to think about the best solutions for your customer. Great customer service!

I love World Nomads! Having worked for an insurance company for over 30 years, I appreciate how tough it is to reach this level of customer service. But, they never disappoint. Malina was the best. They are great, and I will use them every time for my travel insurance!

Easy process & good customer service

I recently bought another policy with World Nomads for my current 6 month trip because I had a great experience with them on my last one. I unfortunately had to visit the hospital and purchase antibiotics on my last trip. They were extremely responsive, filing my claim was quick and simple, and they checked in on me (and asked me how I am feeling) once or twice every day until I healed! Once I returned home, my payment was processed promptly. All in all, it was a good experience and I love that they cover so much more than many others.

First time buying travel insurance

Bought a policy for Daughter travelling in 3 days time so I wanted swift, clear information about the levels of cover available. Giving 5 stars solely based on ease of the process so far and quick receipt of policy with associated documents. Also considered it to be a satisfactory price when checked against other quotes.

Highly Recommend WN

We have used World Nomads for about 14 trips since March 2020. Getting quotes is very easy. We have had to turn in 2 claims and the claims were readily reimbursed as promised. The online claim forms are easily completed as long as you have the required documentation (doctor's notes, receipts). The e-checks for reimbursement were sent in a timely manner. We have been very happy with this choice of insurance and will continue to use them. We also have recommended WN to many friends and travelers we meet.

Hassle-free claim process

I bought a policy for an 9 month trip to Malaysia and Vietnam. WN was a little bit more expensive, but provided a higher level of coverage. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away while I was on this trip and I put in a claim for trip interruption and WN was great. Despite the fact that my country of residence was the UK and my grandmother lived in the US, WN covered my travel to the US for her funeral and back to Vietnam. The claim process was easy and straight forward and I received the payment very quickly (less than a month). The customer service reps I spoke to were very helpful. I would highly recommend WN for hassle-free travel insurance.

Excellent service, wouldn't use anyone else!

For the first time in all our travels we unfortunately both became unwell in Thailand resulting in having to get a doctor to our hotel on 2 occasions and the loss of 2 pre-booked tours. World Nomads were absolutely brilliant when we submitted our 2 separate claims, it was very easy and they paid both of the total amounts (less the $100 excess) into our bank account in less than a week. Very impressed!

Happy Ending!

I never thought I’d actually have to file a claim with World Nomads. My iPhone was stolen off of me in the Milan train station despite my vigilance with all the pickpocket warnings — they are true magicians :( I notified World Nomads right away and from the start they made the claims process very easy. I’m sure having a police report of the theft (all in Italian) and phone receipt helped move the process along. From start to finish, my refund check was issued in less than two months’ time, which was very satisfactory to me. Thank you World Nomads. I’ve recommended you to friends who have recently purchased policies and will definitely be using you again on future travel!

World Nomads travel insurance is worth every penny

It really sucked to have to cancel our trip due to a sudden medical problem (a blown knee joint requiring knee replacement) but we were relieved we had taken out coverage through World Nomads. The online claims process worked well for us. We only had to contact a claims rep at the beginning to get answers to a couple of preliminary questions. The rep was professional & gave us accurate & complete information. World Nomads & Trip Mate resolved our claim in our favor in a reasonable amount of time, and covered about 90% of our losses. We found this result totally acceptable for our particular situation. We would recommend World Nomads to anyone and plan to use their travel insurance again -- once one of us recuperates from knee replacement surgery and is able to travel again!

International trip and Covid!

We purchased insurance for a trip to Italy (from the US) taken in 2022. At the end of our trip, one of us contracted Covid, and due to quarantine requirements as well as a negative test requirement for flying home, I lost my return flight cost and had some additional expenses. My travel mate flew home as scheduled, but I had to stay for another week. While it was a bit cumbersome, I was able to document my losses, and I was reimbursed by the insurance company within a few weeks for my new return ticket cost as well as an expensive ($210) taxi ride from Siena to the Florence airport. The new flight ticket cost was over $1500 one-way, so it was quite a relief to have it covered! The Italian government paid for the quarantine hotel and meals, so the insurance company lucked out on that. I’m really glad we had insurance for this trip. It was our first time ever needing it.

The plans are cost effective and affordable and the customer service has been truly excellent during a recent claim process. The customer service representative was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable, following up and responding to queries, and most importantly assisting to ensure that the reimbursement process was done expeditiously. I highly recommend World Nomads!

Only positive experiences with World Nomads

I have purchased trip insurance twice and it's very easy. One trip was canceled due to illness and the claim was also easy to submit. Took a few weeks but everything was taken care of to our satisfaction. We'll definitely purchase their insurance for future trips.

Motorcycle touring

The whole process was easy and as I wanted my adventure activities Insured ie Motorcycle touring, World Nomads came out the clear winner. Their description of what was and what wasn’t insured was a lot clearer and less convoluted than other companies I had looked at and the price was very competitive.

I have been using World Nomads for years. It is easy to choose the right insurance needed. Insurance is provided as soon as it is purchased. The cool-off period is also a very interesting and useful feature to increase the customers' piece of mind in case of changes in the planned trip.

After our flight was delayed to Cancun due to mechanical issues, we ended up not only having to pay for an extra night at a hotel, but also lost money due to not being able to make it to our original hotel in time. World Nomads reimbursed us for both rooms! Always use them when I travel.

Last Minute Flight Cancellations!

My wife and I had a last minute flight cancelation causing alot of headaches for us and another nights stay at an unplanned hotel. World Nomads insurance covered our expenses and troubles with no issue. I haven’t had to use the insurance policies that we always purchase before but World Nomads was easy to file a claim with. We will continue to use them for all of our adventure insurance needs!

Reactivity of help center (I couldn't use my visa credit card to pay my insurance on the website). Great kindness of the person who answer to my call; and she accepted to make great efforts to speak slow in English.

Will never be without trip insurance again! Thanks WN!

Never put much thought into trip insurance before but decided going overseas with my bike and all the gear was worth the extra expense. And boy was I glad we did it! Long story short, after the trip, we filed a claim with World Nomads for the expenses incurred due to airline baggage lost/delayed. The claim submittal was easy and hassle free. And wouldn't you know, within 1-2 months we received our refund checks for the additional expenses. I am so stoked and satisfied with the customer service and ease of use with World Nomads. From now on, I will ONLY use them. I hope to never have these issues again, but for the price for the piece of mind, it is so worth it. If you are on the fence about getting coverage, just do it!

I had the most pleasant (and prompt) response. My issue was resolved quickly and to my satisfaction. I have been and will continue to recommend them on social platforms.

I gladly recommend WorldNomads

I bought travel insurance in September, at that time I didn't know how valuable trip insurance can be if an unforeseen event occurs, because I never had any reason to make a claim. But unfortunately, unforeseen events can occur when you least expect them. So, I had to cancel my trip and I made a claim for the reimbursement of travel expenses. My claim was processed successfully, and I received reimbursement for travel expenses up to the maximum stipulated in the insurance certificate. For those who wrote that they have not yet received their medical or travel expenses reimbursement, I advise you to be patient with them, do not forget that AXA is a world-renowned insurance company and their decision are fair and impartial. Thank you WorldNomads for providing high-quality travel insurance and thank you AXA for handling my claim professionally. I gladly recommend insuring your trip with WorldNomads.

Travel delay claim- Easy processing

I had extend my stay in Lima by a night due to airline delays. My travel insurance covered travel delays and my extra night at my hotel was reimbursed within a couple months following my claim submission. Also, this was one of the few policies offering coverage for high altitude hiking. Would recommend World Nomads travel insurance.

I used Nomads several times

I used World Nomads several times. Then my trip on 2020 was cancelled due to the Pandemic. Although not covered, my communication with World Nomads to reconsider was promising, not outright rejection, in case my trip is re-scheduled by the agency. True enough, it is re-scheduled this year, 2022. World Nomad gave me a refund of my 2020 premium after I got a new insurance for the 2022 trip. Very considerate and responsive to customer-the way to go! Keep it up World Nomad. I will recommend you to my trip companions for their future travel plans.

We are getting ready to travel in 2023, so I don’t have any experience using the insurance and I hope we won’t need it when we are traveling. However, it was easy to purchase and we believe a great deal especially for times as they are today! You never know what is going to happen. It is nice to have some protection.

How World Nomads helped

  • Hospital treatment

Anton required surgery after breaking his leg and wrist in a fall while traveling in Thailand. We called Anton daily to check on his progress and once cover was confirmed, we took care of his medical bills and his hospital admin.

  • Escorted flight home

After his surgery, Anton couldn’t travel back to Iceland without help, so we sent Luke from our Emergency Assistance Team to Thailand to meet him while in hospital. Luke was also there to help Anton carry his bags and escort him home on the plane to Iceland.

  • Reimbursement for unused flights

Anton had paid for multiple flights to continue his journey across Asia, so we reimbursed him for the cost of the unused flights when his adventure was unexpectedly cut short.
