Nepal is a small country that packs a big punch. Home to the majestic Himalayas and Everest Base Camp trek, there’s no shortage of things to do and see. Before traveling to the Roof of the World, consider packing travel insurance.

What’s covered in Nepal

Depending on your country of residence and the plan you choose, our policies can protect you up to policy limits for benefits including:

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs. It’s important to note that all plans are different depending on your country of residence and the plan that you’ve selected and may require upgrades for cover to apply.

Why should I consider travel insurance for a trip to Nepal

Travel insurance could help if you land in Pokhara but your baggage doesn’t, if your trek is delayed due to extreme weather, or if you suffer altitude sickness and need to be evacuated.

Adventuring in Nepal

Our policies offer cover for injuries and accidents for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences whether you’re on jungle safari in Chitwan National Park or white-water rafting the Bhote Koshi. Be sure to specify the activities you intend to do when you purchase your policy, as you can’t add them afterwards.

Hiking in Nepal

Our policies offer cover for high altitude hiking, trekking and camping up to 6,000 metres including Base Camp and Annapurna. We can also cover medical evacuation if medically necessary. Keep in mind that you may require a policy upgrade to be covered.

Backpacking in Nepal

With plenty of affordable accommodation, delicious food and rich culture, Nepal is a backpacker's dream. Our policies may cover you if your passport is stolen whilst browsing Asan market, for travel disruption or if your trip is cancelled.

What to look out for when traveling around Nepal

Keep your valuables safe

Remember to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight when exploring Kathmandu and beyond. Our policies may cover theft if your valuables are stolen (depending on your country of residence and up to policy limits). We can also cover high-value items with an upgrade.

Staying healthy and safe in Nepal

If you get food poisoning from a dodgy dal or you’re injured while trekking, our policies can cover you for emergency medical treatment. We can even bring you home for treatment if required.

Travel disruptions in Nepal

Nepal's roads, flights, and weather can be unpredictable. If your trekking adventure is cancelled due to a natural catastrophe, or your flights are delayed due to an unforeseen event our policies can cover you.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. There are some things we can’t cover, including, but not limited to:

  • Trekking/camping over 6,000 metres in elevation, mountaineering, and ice climbing
  • Participation in any adventure sports activities where you don’t purchase the appropriate level upgrade, or where it is specifically excluded
  • Existing medical conditions
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to U.S. Department of State ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure
  • Unsupervised baggage or personal items
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs or acting illegally.

Always check the terms and conditions of your policy. If you’re not sure about anything or have any questions, contact us.

Travel Insurance for a trip to Croatia

What you should consider when buying travel insurance for a trip to Croatia.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Croatia? Sunny islands like Vis and Korcula, beaches on the Dalmatian Coast, the historic walled city of Dubrovnik, and a welcoming culture all come to mind for us. Travellers also come for the lush national parks, unique cuisine, burgeoning wine scene, and under-the-radar experiences in Eastern Croatia’s historic Slavonia and Baranja. Whatever your ideal adventure looks like, Croatia offers adventure, natural beauty, and a rich history and culinary traditions.

You can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians in Croatia. International travel can be life changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote for travel insurance for Croatia before you set forth on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Croatia?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like theft of your baggage or a missed connection due to inclement weather, for example.

Travel insurance for Croatia can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures, such as mountain biking in Istria.

Our travel insurance plans also include important travel, medical, and security assistance services designed to provide you with guidance before and during your trip.

We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures.

Travel insurance for activities in Croatia

Whether you’re planning to explore by sailing between islands in the Adriatic Sea or hiking to waterfalls in Krka National Park, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Croatia. Rock climbing the canyons of Paklenica National Park, sea kayaking from Hvar or Dubrovnik, and windsurfing around Kučište-Viganj are all covered under travel insurance for Croatia.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. You must list all your activities out when purchasing the plan—and if something happens while you are participating in an activity you didn’t list on your plan, then you won’t be covered. For example, if you go hiking while on your trip and you didn’t list that activity out when making your plan purchase, you won’t be covered if something were to happen on the trail. You may want to overshoot and list out all possible activities you may do, just in case.

Also keep in mind that you will be covered under the base plan to participate in various adventure sports, activities, volunteer, and work experiences, shown as Level 1, under both our Standard and Explorer Plans. To have coverage for adventures sports, work and activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3, you will need to upgrade your adventure sports coverage and pay an extra premium. Note: Special conditions and exclusions may apply to while taking part in certain sports and activities. For the full policy terms and conditions please review the policy wording.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Croatia

Whether you break your ankle while hiking through Paklenica National Park or sustain an injury while windsurfing, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Croatia.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Croatia, including assisting you with language barriers and finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost luggage in Croatia

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you arrive in Dubrovink but your bag—packed with your new swimsuit and favorite sundress for your beach vacation—didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens and your bag is missing for 12 hours or more, your travel insurance for Croatia could still reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, until you and your bag are reunited.

While Croatia is generally considered safe, pickpocketing or theft can happen anywhere. If your stuff is stolen from under your nose, your travel insurance plan could also reimburse you for what was lost (depreciation and plan limits will apply). When picking a plan, you may want to consider the amount of baggage coverage available and make sure you are comfortable with the maximum amount. The Standard and Explorer plans each have different limits.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Croatia

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses.

Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can help protect you in case of emergencies before your leave, or back home in Canada after you’ve departed. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused, pre-paid travel expenses (up to plan limits) hotel expenses or airfare that you can no longer use.

Tips for travelling to Croatia from Canada

As much as you may have planned each detail of your Croatian adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Croatia before you leave. Up-to-date warnings— including weather advisories and political situations—will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

Finally, we recommend checking out our travel tips for Croatia. You may also want to read up on some destination inspiration for non-touristy spots to check out in Croatia to help you discover the lesser-known side of this Eastern European country rich in history, culture, and nature.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, of if you have questions, just ask us

Travel insurance for Trip Resumption

Learn how your travel insurance could help if your trip is unexpectedly interrupted.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

If something happens on your trip and you need to come back to New Zealand, World Nomads travel insurance can help you pick up where you left off once you’re ready to go again.

What is trip resumption cover?

If you've had to interrupt your trip and return back to New Zealand because you:

  • Were sick or injured overseas, or
  • One of your close relatives has been hospitalised or has died, or
  • A severe weather event has struck your home in New Zealand resulting in severe damage,

World Nomads overseas travel insurance policies offer coverage for reasonable transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, so that you can get back on the road and finish your trip.

What am I covered for if my trip has been cut short?

We may pay for reasonable additional transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, for you to resume your trip if you’ve had to return home during your travels for a compassionate emergency visit, your repatriation back home for medical treatment, or because your home in New Zealand is severely damaged by a natural disaster.

Your policy still needs to be valid for the period of your resumed trip. Your policy also needs to be the one that you were travelling on when you had to return home.

Grandma in palliative care

My grandmother suffered an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage after having a fall and was subsequently placed in palliative care in November. I received a phone call to return home as my grandmother only had a few days to live according to the doctors. I returned home, and she passed away. I then recommenced my travels after her passing and funeral.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about trip resumption and insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask our customer service team

  • What is the difference between trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip resumption cover?

These benefits may help with reasonable costs associated if your trip is affected by a list of specific events.

    • Trip cancellation may cover reasonable costs to cancel all or part of your trip. You can still be overseas and travelling to claim on this benefit.
    • Trip interruption may cover reasonable costs to re-arrange your trip after it's interrupted. You can still be overseas and travelling to claim on this benefit.
    • Trip resumption cover may help you resume your trip after repatriation to New Zealand for medical treatment, a compassionate visit for a close relative who has died or is seriously ill, or if your home is severely damaged by a natural disaster.
  • Am I covered if my trip is interrupted by a pandemic?

Some exclusions may apply for epidemics, pandemics or World Health Organization (WHO) declarations of a public health emergency of international concern. When they apply, these exclusions are outlined in your policy wording.

For further information on coverage for Coronavirus (Covid-19) read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

  • What if I’m resuming my trip from a country other than New Zealand?

If you’re resuming your trip because of a compassionate emergency visit that takes you to a country other than New Zealand, you can resume your trip from this country. But we’ll only pay the lesser of what it would cost to resume your trip from this country or from your country of residence.

If something happens while you’re enjoying your overseas adventure and you need to come back to Australia, World Nomads travel insurance can help you pick up where you left off.

What is trip resumption cover?

If you've had to interrupt your trip and return home because you:

  • Were sick or injured overseas, or
  • One of your close relatives has been hospitalised or has died, or
  • A severe weather event has struck your home in Australia resulting in severe damage.

World Nomads overseas travel insurance policies offer coverage for reasonable transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, so that you can get back on the road and finish your trip.

What am I covered for if my trip has been cut short?

We may pay for reasonable additional transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, for you to resume your trip if you’ve had to return home during your travels for a compassionate emergency visit, your repatriation back home for medical treatment, or because your home in Australia is severely damaged by a natural disaster.

Your policy still needs to be valid for the period of your resumed trip. Your policy also needs to be the one that you were travelling on when you had to return home.

Bali travel insurance and safety tips

While Bali is generally safe, if you’re venturing there for the first time, it’s handy to be well-versed on how to traverse the island safely.

Safety

  • Be mindful of traffic when crossing streets – Bali’s traffic can be chaotic.
  • Avoid leaving valuables unattended at the beach or in crowded areas. Keep valuables in a bum bag and lock your room at night.
  • Wear plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen and don’t drink tap water or drinks with ice.
  • Respect local traditions and customs, including dress codes when visiting cultural attractions like temples and sacred sites.
  • Only consume drinks from a reputable bar and avoid Arak – cases of methanol poisoning have been reported because of this traditional Balinese drink.

Travel insurance

  • Check that your travel insurance policy includes cover for all of the activities you intend to undertake while in Bali. You may need to pay an additional premium if the activity is ‘high risk.’
  • Understand the terms and conditions of your chosen insurance policy, including exclusions or limitations.
  • Ensure your travel insurance covers medical emergencies, including evacuation if required.

Traveler tip: make copies of all key travel documents – passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets – and keep them separate from the originals so you have backups and proof of purchase if required.
