I’m concerned about how Coronavirus may affect my travel plans. What do I do?

  • Contact your airline, cruise or tour operator to check if tourist services are affected or if you need to change your travel arrangements. Always contact your airline, cruise company or travel agent for assistance in the first instance.
  • Refer to your policy wording for more detail or contact our Customer Service Centre to discuss your plans before making any changes. All policy terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions apply.
  • Ill with COVID just before traveling? Unsure if you are covered for trip cancellation because of COVID? Contact us as soon as possible. Our Explorer Plan offers cover for some coronavirus related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses and some quarantine costs. Cover depends on your Country of Residence, and which plan you’ve selected.
  • In the event of a claim covered by your policy, you must do everything you can to minimize and reduce the cost of the claim and provide all supporting documentation of the event and expenses incurred. If you intend to submit a claim, please complete the claim form and if you need help doing this, contact us.

Experiencing a medical emergency?

If you're experiencing a medical emergency and need medical help, contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team who can help direct you to medical help, and if necessary, work with local authorities to repatriate you home, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy.

When you call, please have ready:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number and traveling companion details for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

What to do if there are cases of COVID-19 in countries that you’re traveling in

  • Get an international COVID-19 vaccination certificate.
  • Organise any documentation your destination needs, such as COVID-19 entry declarations.
  • If your destination or airline needs evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result, book a COVID-19 test. Make sure to check the test types accepted and timeframes they need the test done within, and plan ahead.
  • All travelers should follow local authorities’ advice, check COVID -19 travel alerts, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) advice and keep updated via local media and reports on what is happening.
  • We recommend that you avoid all high-risk areas where there are large crowds of people and in particular avoid farms, live animal and seafood markets, and areas where animals are slaughtered, including avoiding contact with animal secretions or droppings.
  • Use hand sanitizer and wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Consider purchasing a face mask for your travel as it may help reduce your risk of exposure to COVID-19.
  • Contact your airline or travel company for information about changes to flight services.

If you have any additional questions, you can contact us.

Am I covered if my next trip is affected by COVID-19?

The level of coverage you’ll have for any Coronavirus related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance Team, who can help you access local medical care.
  • Medical costs including hospitalization.
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

Some of our Explorer plans also offer coverage for some additional Coronavirus-related events such as cancellation following a diagnosis to assist our travelers.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

Note: don't forget to read the policy wording when you hit the quote button as all plans are different – don't just assume you are covered in every situation, as terms and conditions, benefit limits, and exclusions may apply.

Things to look out for when purchasing travel insurance:

  • Make sure you correctly choose the right trip dates, age limit, and level of cover.
  • Ensure all your destinations are covered.
  • Make sure you understand what a pre-existing medical condition is under our policy.
  • Some activities and sports may require extra level of cover or may not be covered.

  • Understand that there will be General Exclusions in your cover for which you won’t be covered under any circumstances.
  • Make copies of travel documents and keep receipts in case you need to make a claim.

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

Just you and the open road, the basics on your back, the world at your feet. Backpacking is a rite of passage for many nomads seeking maximum experience for minimum expense.

You might be setting out to find your crew or yourself, to connect with a destination or frolic at every festival.

But even if you can do without your creature comforts, travel insurance* may still be a good idea.

World Nomads covers backpackers as they travel all over the world, with travel insurance designed for backpacking in ThailandVietnamSouth AmericaEurope and beyond.

Why should I consider travel insurance when backpacking?

If your travels take you on the wrong kind of adventure – like a sudden illness or injury, stolen or lost belongings, or an emergency that requires you to head home pronto – travel insurance may be able to help you with expenses. Plus, the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team is here for you in a crisis, providing guidance and pre-approving costs if necessary.

As dedicated backpackers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover all sorts of backpacking trips, from week-long jaunts through Europe, to multi-month adventures across South America. And we don’t just cover you while you’re walking; we also cover over 250 other sports, activities and experiences you might want to engage in during your backpacking trip.

We offer four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. If your backpacking trip will include hiking, consider the different elevations covered with each plan. The Standard and Annual plans cover hiking activities up to 19,685 feet/6,000 meters. The Explorer plan covers hiking activities up to 21,325 feet/6,500 meters. The Epic Plan covers hiking activities up to 26,247 feet/8,000 meters.

What’s covered when backpacking?

World Nomads supports backpacking adventures of all types, with protection for:

  • Trip cancellation for the recovery of missed, prepaid, non-refundable trip costs when you cancel for a covered reason.
  • Emergency medical expenses for accidents, injuries or sicknesses.
  • Personal belongings including tents, sleeping bags, hiking and trekking gear, and more, should they get stolen or lost by a common carrier.
  • Emergency evacuation for hospital transfers or a flight back to your home if your condition warrants it.
  • Baggage delays of at least 12 hours on route to your destination.
  • Trip interruption for emergencies that can cut your trip short.
  • More than 250 activities, from water sports to snow-based adventure sports and more.
  • Pre-trip medical support through our non-insurance service partner Runway Health to get travel medicines, like altitude sickness pills or malaria medication, delivered to your door before you leave on your trip.

Each benefit is subject to terms, conditions and exclusions. Be sure to read your plan documents to learn exactly what scenarios are covered.

What doesn't backpacker insurance cover?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Here are a few things we don’t cover:

  • Wear and tear from everyday use of sporting equipment. Gear that is in use is not covered.
  • Hiking or climbing while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Mountaineering, high altitude climbing, hikes, treks, or expeditions above 26,247 feet/8,000 meters  (Epic Plan), 21,325 feet/6,500 meters (Explorer Plan) or above 9,842 feet/3,000 meters (Standard and Annual Plans).
  • Any activities that aren’t on our adventure sports coverage list.
  • Search-and-rescue missions.
  • If you travel against medical advice.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition, unless you purchased your plan within the time-sensitive period and have a waiver.
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • If traveling domestically, travel within 100 miles from your home.

Travel insurance tips for backpackers

Here are some pointers to help keep you covered while backpacking.

  • For you, does backpacking = hiking or mountain climbing? Make sure you select the right plan for your adventure sport or activities. Our article on covered sports and activities should help you decide on whether to buy a  Standard, Explorer, Epic or Annual plan, as they have different levels of coverage. You can’t upgrade your coverage after you purchase a plan, so it’s important to get this right on the first go.
  • While having fun is a must-do, risky behavior isn’t covered. Yes, you can enjoy a drink and take the road less traveled, but incidents that occur while under the influence of drugs or alcohol may not be covered under your plan.
  • If you want to work while you’re away, coverage for work such as teaching, bar work, or conservation work may be included in the Standard or Annual plan. However, volunteer activities such as NGO support, disaster relief, or construction and renovation work may only be covered under the Explorer or Epic plans. However, keep in mind that some types of work like professional mountain guiding are not covered at all.
  • Going wherever the breeze blows? If you want to cross the border, check with our customer service team first as your plan may not apply in all countries.

Are you traveling long-term, you lucky thing? You can buy more travel insurance while abroad (waiting periods may apply) even if you don’t have a return ticket.   And if you plan to take numerous trips during the year, then the Annual Multi-Trip plan could be best for you.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about backpacking travel insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • Does my insurance pay for my accident upfront or do I have to pay and claim?
World Nomads plans provide secondary insurance and are in excess to any other insurance you may have. You should pay upfront and then claim reimbursement with your primary insurance first. Once your primary insurance makes a decision on your claim, you can make a claim with us for the difference (the amount they did not cover) up to your policy limits. Be sure to include your primary insurer’s Explanation of Benefits along with your claim. If you don’t have primary insurance, you’ll submit a claim to us for the full amount, up to the policy limits. If you have ay questions in an emergency, please contact our emergency assistance team for guidance.
  • Is there a time period that I have to claim within?
We recommend you make a claim as soon as you are able. The sooner you start your claim, the sooner our team can get working on it. If you're waiting on documentation, just let our customer service team know, so they can make a note. Plus, submitting your claim as soon as possible means less of a chance you’ll misplace your receipts or other required documentation.

Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads

Learn how your tech could be covered while you're working or traveling overseas.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Protecting your gadgets is an important part of travel, taking your gadgets on the road is just as common and essential as packing an extra pair of socks. That's why our travel insurance plans have been designed for digital nomads.

Double check the specific terms and conditions of your policy as there may be limits to what you can claim depending on the premium you have paid and what happens to your equipment while on the road.

Why travel insurance is important for digital nomads?

Travel insurance may not always be required, but when that illness, injury, baggage delay or trip interruption occurs, and you’re left out in the cold in a foreign country it could come in very handy. World Nomads may offer travel insurance for several events, some of these include:

How are my electronics covered?

World Nomads may be able to replace, repair or recover the costs of your tech devices when stolen, lost or damaged under your supervision, in certain circumstances. Benefits are available only after exhausting other sources of compensation, such as from your common carrier (this can be a public airline, bus or train company licensed to carry passengers for a fee, excluding taxis and rental vehicle companies, and operating to regular public schedules/timetables).

Remember, depreciation and wear and tear on your gear are taken into account when we review your claim, and claims are subject to per item limit and total maximum benefit amount, which can be found in your policy wording.

In the event that your equipment is delayed, lost and/or accidentally damaged by a common carrier, you must report the incident as soon as reasonably possible to a responsible officer for the carrier.

You must also get a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) or a similar official report and make a claim directly with the carrier as a first step.

Bag snatched in Latvia.

It was my final day in Riga, Latvia. In my small bag I keep all my valuables, because hostels can't always be reliable with safekeeping. It contained my new GoPro, Iphone, digital camera, laptop and hard drive, plus my emergency money (200 euros). I planned on using my cameras and computer for editing later that afternoon. The coast was amazing and, as it got late, I decided to take the train back to Riga city. As I was getting off the train, down the vertical steep steps, I had my bag snatched off my shoulder. In seconds, the doors closed and the train pulled off. Telling authorities on the platforms immediately, they could not assist and referred me straight to the police. Feeling helpless, I went to the police where I was kept for hours, because of English barriers and translations of documents. I walked out just after midnight with my report. A day trip I won't forget soon.

Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads

Learn how your tech could be covered while you're working or traveling overseas.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Working remotely as a digital nomad means the world is your office. That means after spending an hour on your laptop, you can go on an African safari or a trek in the Alps.

World Nomads offers flexible travel insurance plans designed to protect Australians working overseas. With coverage for unexpected situations like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and stolen devices, you can focus on your work and keep exploring after hours.

Both our Standard Plan and Explorer Plan are designed to protect your tech gear when you’re on the road.

Double check the specific terms and conditions of your policy as there may be limits to what you can claim, depending on the premium that you have paid and what happens to your equipment while on the road.

Why travel insurance is important for digital nomads?

Working overseas under a digital nomad visa offers incredible freedom, but it also comes with risks. From lost luggage to unexpected health issues, travel insurance may offer cover when things don’t go to plan. Whether you’re a freelancer, remote worker, or running your own business from a beachside café, World Nomads travel insurance may offer key benefits like:

  • Medical emergencies: Access to medical evacuation and hospital coverage if you fall ill or get injured overseas.
  • Bags and valuables: We offer cover for your valuables and bags in case they are stolen, damaged or go missing while in transit.
  • Trip cancellation: If your plans change unexpectedly due to a family emergency or illness, cancellation cover can help recover some of your costs.
  • 24/7 emergency assistance: Access to worldwide support whenever and wherever you need it.

Remember, depreciation and wear and tear on your gear are considered when we review your claim, and claims are subject to per item limit and a total maximum benefit amount, which can be found in your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Does my travel insurance cover my tech?

Watch the video to learn how our travel policy can provide cover for all of your tech gear during your travels.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

  • When you mindlessly leave your gear behind (like that time when you forgot your very expensive camera and lenses in a taxi on your way to the airport).
  • Whenever you leave items (including tablets, laptops, photographic or video equipment, mobile phones and other hand-held devices) unattended, including in a car, boat, tent or camper trailer or checked in with your common carrier.
  • Gear or equipment that you use for professional purposes.
  • Electronic malfunctions (you'll have to hit up the manufacturer).
  • When you fail to file a loss or theft report with the local authorities or the representative of the venue where it took place, such as a common carrier, tour operator or other travel provider.

Just you, your pack, and the open road. Backpacking is a rite of passage for nomads chasing big experiences on a small budget.

Whether you're out to find your crew or yourself, travel insurance can help if things go off track.

World Nomads Travel Insurance covers backpackers exploring Thailand, South America, Europe and beyond.

Why you may want to consider travel insurance to protect your backpacking trip

Backpacking is all about freedom and spontaneity—but that flexibility also comes with risk. From sprained ankles on rocky trails to food poisoning in rural villages or stolen gear on overnight buses, the unexpected can derail your trip fast. That’s where travel insurance for backpackers can help—covering emergency medical expenses, trip interruptions, evacuations from high-altitude regions, and lost or stolen passports. If you have to cancel your trip before departure due to a covered reason—like sudden illness or injury—trip cancellation coverage may help reimburse your prepaid non-refundable expenses. Whether you're trekking through South America or hopping between hidden towns in Southeast Asia, having the right coverage gives you the confidence to go wherever the trail takes you.

How can I protect my backpacking trip with travel insurance?

Backpacking looks different for every traveller—maybe you're hostel-hopping across Europe and want protection in case your gear gets stolen, or you’re trekking through the Andes where emergency medical expense coverage could be very helpful. That’s why World Nomads offers flexible travel insurance plans for backpackers, with coverage designed to match your style of adventure. From safeguarding your belongings to covering accidents at high altitudes, we’ve got your back.

  1. Standard & Explorer Plans

What travel insurance benefits could cover you and your backpacking trip?

World Nomads offers coverage (up to the plan maximum benefit amount) for:

  • Emergency medical expenses:if you get hurt while backpacking and need medical attention, our emergency medical coverage for injury or sickness may provide reimbursement for the treatment you need.
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation: If your injuries are severe, acute, or life-threatening our plans may cover evacuation and transportation to a medical facility best suited for your care, subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Baggage and personal effects protection: Our gear coverage may help with reimbursement of the cost to repair or replace damaged, lost or stolen items, including airline checked bags.
  • Trip cancellation: if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason such as an unexpected illness, we may be able to reimburse your pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations.

What doesn't backpacker insurance cover?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Here are a few things we don’t cover:

  • Any alcohol related sickness, death or injury or the abuse of medication, drugs, alcohol or any other toxic substance.
  • Travel within your home province
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • Wear and tear from everyday use of sporting equipment. Gear that is in use is not covered.
  • Backpacking over 6,000 metres.

  • Travelling long-term: You can buy more travel insurance while abroad (waiting periods may apply) even if you don’t have a return ticket.
  • Stay healthy: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. It’s best to be sure you are physically capable of it. Consider going to the doctor before your trip to make sure you had all the necessary medications.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork:any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases and a loss or theft report. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you need to make a claim.
