World Nomads love camping

We get it. You want to escape from the hustle and unwind under a blanket of stars. From lush forests to the endless horizons of Australia’s Outback, a camping trip offers every manner of revival. As exciting as planning your outdoor adventure is, travelling far from home and urban comforts also comes with risks.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer plans have been designed to offer cover for sudden and unforeseen events on your next camping trip such as being left empty handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your hiking gear in it), if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or unwell or if severe weather washes away your travel plans.

Nothing soothes the soul like the crackle of a campfire. As passionate campers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover all types of camping adventures:

  • Searching for the Northern Lights in Lapland
  • Pitching camp among the old growth forests of British Columbia
  • Trekking through Cradle Mountain – St Clair National Park, Tasmania

What's covered for camping?

Our plans can help you navigate any mishaps and help get you back on track. World Nomads may offer cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • The non-refundable costs of cancelling your trip due to sudden injury or illness to you, a travelling companion or immediate relative.
  • The Explorer Plan includes cover for official ‘Avoid All’ or 'All but Essential' advice issued for your destination after you’ve received your Certificate of Insurance, which causes you to cancel your trip.
  • Overseas emergency medical expenses for sudden injury or illness.
  • Overseas emergency medical evacuation or repatriation back to the UK.
  • Loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items. Remember to keep copies of your original receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • Checked-in baggage delayed for more than 24 hours and the replacement costs for essential clothing and toiletries while waiting for your baggage (keep receipts).

Cover for adventure or sports activities while camping

What’s a camping trip without some action?

Both our plans offer cover for  activities such as stand up paddle boarding/surfing and scuba diving up to 30 metres. You can also choose to upgrade your activity cover by paying an additional premium, here you can be covered for activities like hiking up to 6,000 metres and mountaineering (with ropes, picks and specialist climbing equipment on both Standard and Explorer plans.

The Explorer offers higher benefit limits along with some additional insured events.

Travel insurance tip: Your cover will depend on the activity(ies) you chose at the time of policy purchase and terms and conditions apply for each activity. Level 1 sports and activities are automatically covered on the Standard and Explorer Plans. You can upgrade your cover for a range of other activities, experiences and manual work if you select the activities (listed as Level 2, 3 and 4) but you will need to pay an additional premium.

Check your Policy Wording for details or contact us if you have questions.

Know where you’re going and what to do if the unexpected happens

Before you head off to the wilderness, it pays to arm yourself with these camping tips for a safer trip:

  • Make sure to include all the countries you’ll be visiting or travelling through on your policy as well as the adventure activities you’re planning.
  • Check you have all the paperwork you’ll need for the countries you’ll be visiting for example, visas, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.
  • Don’t leave home without your GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card)
  • Check the local camping regulations for the places you are visiting. Some countries allow you to camp anywhere on public or private land away from habitation, however many countries do not allow this and if you cross a border unknowingly, you could be fined and it could affect your cover.
  • Be responsible when choosing a camping destination or activity. Does it suit your experience level? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination? Are you using an accredited operator? Can our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team reach you if you get into trouble and require medical assistance?

What's not covered?

Some things we do not cover include:

  • Any expenses that relate to pre-existing medical conditions, as outlined in the policy wording.
  • Unattended baggage or personal items.
  • Any items, clearly visible from the outside, left unattended in a motor vehicle.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.
  • Any search or rescue operations to rescue you.
  • Misuse of alcohol or drugs to the extent that it risks your health or impairs your faculties.
  • Damage from any illegal activity.
  • Expenses that are recoverable from elsewhere, e.g. transport carriers or accommodation providers.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your Policy Wording for a full list of limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

Travel Insurance while camping

Simple and flexible travel insurance to take you camping around the world. Buy at home or while traveling, and claim online from anywhere in the world.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

You want to escape from the hustle and unwind under a blanket of stars. We get it, we’re a community of adventure travelers, and sometimes getting off the beaten track is exactly what we need. From lush northern European forests to the endless horizons of Australia’s Outback, a camping trip offers the chance to get in touch with nature and explore a different side of travel. But as exciting as planning your outdoor adventure is, traveling far from home and urban comforts can also come with risks.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for independent travelers like you for sudden and unforeseen events on your next camping trip, such as being left empty-handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your tent in it), if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or unwell, or if severe weather washes away your travel plans.

What’s covered

World Nomads can offer cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Baggage protection: Got your stuff stolen while camping? Our gear coverage may help with replacing belongings that were swiped.
  • Emergency medical: Camping and fresh air can be great for the body and soul, but not if it ends up in a bad fall. Emergency medical coverage can come in handy in the case of an accident or injury.
  • Evacuation: Your camping paradise may be far away from medical facilities. With our cover, you can get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from us.
  • Trip cancellation: Has a sick or injured traveling companion, or a severe weather event put a stop to your camping adventure? Depending on your plan and Country of Residence, you may be able to recover your travel expenses.
  • Coverage for some Coronavirus (COVID-19) related events: To find out more, including benefit limits and exclusions, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article.

Your coverage will vary according to your country of residence and whether you chose a Standard or an Explorer plan. Read your policy for details on cover, maximum benefit limits, exclusions, and conditions of your coverage. Contact us if you have any questions about your cover.

Cover for adventure or sport activities while camping

It doesn’t matter if you’re camping in a van or hiking into a remote campsite – chances are you’re going to want to do some more adventuring wherever you’re headed.

Depending on your Country of Residence, and the plan you choose, you can be covered for several activities such as bungee jumping, kayaking, and scuba diving up to 30 meters. While there are many activities available on the Standard plan, those feeling extra adventurous can upgrade to the Explorer Plan. The Explorer plan offers upgrades for activities such as hiking up to 6,000 meters, or canyoning and scuba diving up to 50 meters.

Check your policy carefully for details or contact us if you have questions.

Know where you’re going, and what to do if the unexpected happens

Before you head off into the wilderness, it pays to arm yourself with these tips for a safer camping trip:

  • Make sure to include all the countries you’ll be visiting or traveling through on your policy, as well as the adventure activities you’re planning to do or participate in.
  • Check you have all the paperwork you’ll need for the countries you’ll be visiting, for example, visas, camping or visitor permits for national parks and campgrounds.
  • Check the local camping regulations for the places you are going. Some countries allow you to camp anywhere on public or private land away from habitation; however, many countries do not allow this, and if you cross a border unknowingly, you could be fined, and it could affect your cover.

What’s not covered?

Some things we may not cover include:

  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team advise you to do.
  • Any expenses that relate to a pre-existing medical condition, as explained in the policy wording.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source, e.g., transport carriers or accommodation providers.
  • Unattended baggage or personal items.
  • Any search or rescue operations to remove you from a life-threatening situation (unless covered by natural catastrophe).
  • Misuse of alcohol or drugs to the extent that it risks your health or impairs your faculties.

Travel Insurance for Europe

Learn why it’s smart for Americans to invest in travel insurance as they explore Europe’s cities, coasts, and mountains.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

At a glance:

  • Travel insurance benefits for Europe may include trip cancellation, delay, and interruption
  • Coverage for medical emergencies, medical evacuation, and natural disasters while abroad
  • Protection for lost, stolen, or delayed baggage and personal belongings
  • Coverage for 250+ adventure and sports activities across Europe (high-altitude hiking included)!
  • Optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade for extra flexibility. Additional terms apply

Home to 44 countries, centuries-old cities, sweeping coasts, highland forests, and delectable cuisine, Europe offers an incredibly varied experience over a relatively compact space.

You can go dog-sledding in the Norwegian Arctic, learn how to cook traditional Italian dishes in Cinque Terre, journey into a dormant volcano in the Azores Islands, and explore the wild valleys of Albania’s newest park, Vjosa Wild River National Park. Festival goers can celebrate King’s Day in Amsterdam, toast with pints at Oktoberfest in Germany, and throw tomatoes at La Tomatina in Spain. Foodies can indulge cheese in France, find the best pasteis de nata in Portugal, and drink wine among rolling vineyards. It’s easy to see why Europe is so popular among Americans.

Whether you’re focusing on a single country or are planning to cross borders for a multi-destination excursion—by train or by car— you may want to consider travel insurance* for Europe to help you explore the wonders of this continent with ease.

Do I need travel insurance for Europe?

International travel can come with many surprises—such as finding a tiny winery in Tuscany that has been in the family for hundreds of years, or spotting the northern lights dancing through the night skies in Iceland.

Some surprises are not as great, though. Nobody wants to think about things like canceled trips, delayed baggage, and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly. If Mount Etna on Sicily erupts, disrupting your travel plans or if you fall off your bike and get hurt while cycling through Slovenia, you may then wish that you had travel insurance for Europe.

World Nomads has four plans to select from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.

Travel insurance for activities in Europe

Whether you’re planning to go explore Portugal by bike or surf in San Sebastian, World Nomads travel insurance covers Americans for over 250 activities. Rock climbing in the Dolomites, skiing in Andorra, and sailing around the Greek islands are all covered under travel insurance for Europe too.

Different plans cover different activities. Before you get a quote, it might be helpful to have a general idea of your itinerary in Europe. If you know what activities you have planned, you’ll be able to choose the right insurance plan for your trip.

For example, if you want to go sea kayaking in Croatia and mountain biking in Austria, you’ll be covered under all insurance plans, including the Standard Plan. If you’re itching to do some more daring winter adventures in Switzerland, such as backcountry alpine ski touring, or if you hope to run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, you’ll need to invest in the Explorer or the Epic Plan.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Europe

As prepared as you may be for your European vacation, sometimes the unexpected happens. You might be trying to catch a big wave in Nazare, Portugal, and hit your head on a rock and require immediate medical attention. Or you might twist your ankle while hiking through the storied forests of Bavaria.

In either case, emergency medical travel insurance may reimburse you for certain medical expenses. While the health care system in Europe is typically quite good, travel insurance for Europe can help you access and potentially be reimbursed for the care you need.

With over 200 languages spoken in Europe, you might find yourself in an area where English isn’t spoken. The 24/7 Emergency Assistance team will be able to help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. They can also help communicate with your medical team if they don’t speak English.

If your attending physician (and the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team) determines that it’s best for you to go home to the US to get medical care, the repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Europe may cover the costs to get you there.

To streamline your experience seeking medical treatment in Europe, we recommend signing up for our Portable Health Records service before your trip. This non-insurance service allows your documents, prescriptions, test results, and emergency contacts to be accessible in one place, anywhere in the world. Whether you need to refill a prescription or deal with a more serious injury, this service can expedite the process.

Travel insurance for lost or stolen bags in Europe

Lost bags are never something we plan for, but unfortunately, they get lost from time to time. You may have packed your favorite swimsuit and sundress for your Italian summer vacation or all your snow gear for a ski trip to the Bavarian Alps. If you land at the airport and then realize that the airline lost your bag, your travel insurance for Europe may reimburse you for the cost of replacing your belongings.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, you may still be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until you and your bag are reunited.

The first step is to contact the airline. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact the Delayed or Lost Baggage Tracking and Delivery service, which is another of our non-insurance service partners. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call so you can file a lost luggage claim.

Travel insurance for theft in Europe

As a whole, Europe is pretty safe, although some cities like Paris, Barcelona, and Rome experience petty theft and pickpocketing. Be aware of your belongings in crowded areas, including major tourist spots or while riding the metro—and read up on some tips for avoiding pickpockets.

If anything does happen, make sure you make a police report. You’ll need that if you have to make a claim for those stolen goods.

Travel insurance for canceled, delayed, or interrupted travel in Europe

You may have planned the perfect European getaway, but things happen that may cause you to cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip. Travel insurance for Europe may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses. Remember- travel insurance does not cover everything. The insurance plan will outline the covered risks for trip cancelation, trip interruption, and trip delay.

If you get sick before leaving the US and your doctor tells you not to travel at that time, you could be forced to cancel your trip. Or, if an immediate family member back home has an unexpected medical emergency while you’re on your adventure, you may need to go back to the United States early. Travel insurance for Europe may help you cover those costs.

From flooding to forest fires, nature can be unpredictable, and it is possible for natural disasters to affect your trip. Volcanoes on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula have been particularly active recently. If an eruption causes flight problems that prevent you from getting to your destination as planned, your trip may be interrupted or delayed. Travel insurance for Europe can help reimburse you for non-refundable, pre-paid accommodation, and activities.

If you purchase the Explorer and Epic Plan during the time sensitive period, the plans also may cover various travel inconveniences you may encounter on your European getaway. For example, if you planned a ski vacation to Norway, but the resort lacks snow and closes when you are already there, you may be eligible for coverage. Or if your rental car broke down on a road trip through the mountains and villages of Transylvania, Romania and you arrived more than 12 hours late at your destination, you may also be eligible for coverage.

Tips for traveling to Europe from the United States

Before you leave the US, we encourage you to check out the US government’s travel advisories for all the countries you’re planning on visiting. Weather, safety, and political situations can change at any time, and this is where they list any current advisories.

If you purchase travel insurance for Europe, it’s a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

You’ll potentially be traveling across several countries using different languages, driving laws, and customs. Learn a few phrases and do some research on each destination to know what to expect from place-to-place.

Much of Europe is well-connected by trains, which is both a convenient and wonderful way to travel slowly through Europe and watch the scenery pass by. As you’re preparing for your adventure, brush up on our safety tips for Europe and our favorite destinations to explore on this continent.

*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described. Please carefully read your state specific plan documents for a full description of coverage. Travel insurance is included as part of your travel protection plan which contains both insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services. Material included on this page does not represent, nor is it specific to, United States Fire Insurance Company or travel insurance benefits provided on United States Fire Insurance Company’s travel protection plans.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 14 July 2021 12:00am UTC, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 14 July 2021 please see below.

We know that many of our international travelers can’t wait to travel again even though they’re having to take added precautions as coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to disrupt global travel plans. World Nomads wants to help you travel with confidence, so we’ve added some COVID-19 cover to our insurance plans.

All our travel insurance plans purchased from 14 July 2021 include emergency medical and repatriation cover if you get sick with COVID-19 while abroad. Our Explorer plans also offer cover for some COVID-19-related events. Benefit limits, conditions and exclusions apply, and cover varies depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you chose.

What do I do if I get COVID-19 before or during my trip?

If you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to yourself or a member of your traveling party being diagnosed with COVID-19 by a medical practitioner, or if your close relative back home is hospitalized or dies due to COVID-19, we have provided some tips below, especially if you intend to make a claim. Please follow these simple tips:

  • Isolate! And seek the relevant medical attention.
  • Contact your doctor as soon as reasonably possible. They will need to certify that due to the COVID-19 diagnosis, you are medically unfit to continue with your original travel plans. Due to exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions (as defined in the policy wording), the symptoms experienced and the diagnosis of COVID-19 must first occur after the policy purchase.
  • Don’t delay in the cancellation of your plans to maximize the opportunity of refunds from your providers.
  • Always keep receipts for any trip payments you make and, wherever possible, request written reports from providers or local authorities.
  • Follow the local advice, including warnings issued by the US Department of State as required by your policy wording - different countries have different rules. What’s okay in your country of residence may not be okay in the countries you plan to visit. While some countries may be more relaxed in their COVID-19 protocols, some others may be very strict in who they allow to enter.

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything, so make sure you’re careful with your planning and you read the policy wording to make sure you understand what’s included and what’s not, as well as the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions. If you have any questions, get in touch.

Bag snatched in Latvia.

It was my final day in Riga, Latvia. In my small bag I keep all my valuables, because hostels can't always be reliable with safekeeping. It contained my new GoPro, iPhone, digital camera, laptop and hard drive, plus my emergency money (200 euros). I planned on using my cameras and computer for editing later that afternoon. The coast was amazing and as it got late, I decided to take the train back to Riga city. As I was getting off the train, down the vertical steep steps, I had my bag snatched off my shoulder. In seconds, the doors closed and the train pulled off. Telling authorities on the platforms immediately, they could not assist and referred me straight to the police. Feeling helpless, I went to the police where I was kept for hours because of English barriers and translations of documents. I walked out just after midnight with my report. A day trip I won't forget soon.

Travel Insurance for Europe

Travelling to Europe offers a myriad of exciting choices such as arts, culture, food, and sporting events. The possibilities are endless!

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Brits looking to travel overseas will be setting their sights on Europe and a variety of cultures and tourist attractions.

You could be off to San Sebastian for Tapas, on your honeymoon to check out the Santorini Calderas, or just wanting to relax and sip craft beers and fancy cocktails in Berlin... the possibilities are endless. But there’s always the chance that the unexpected could derail your holiday, which is why having travel insurance is crucial.

With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in and you're ready to go, or while you're on the road travelling around Europe.

No matter how short or long your trip is and what your budget is, you should consider purchasing travel insurance as it may assist you if something goes wrong. World Nomads has two plans which cover an array of activities ranging from mountain biking to skiing, hiking, kayaking, surfing, scuba diving and more.  We also offer cover for other key events such as:

  • Medical evacuation and repatriation back to the UK
  • Cancellation and curtailment
  • Delays or missed flights
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage

Why should I get insurance cover for Europe?

Planning a trip around Europe is always a big undertaking as it involves many countries and many possibilities - this means making a lot of bookings for hotels, flights, trains, and tours.

World Nomads has two travel insurance plans to choose from, which may be able to help if you suddenly need to cancel your trip, or if you have to cut your trip short and return to the UK. A worst-case scenario is if you fall ill or are badly injured and need to be repatriated back home as this can be very costly.

What to look out for when travelling around Europe

Beware petty theft and pickpockets in key hotspots: While most countries in Europe are amongst the safest to travel to there is always the chance that you might end up being pickpocketed or being the victim of a scam in many top tourist hotspots. When in crowded areas in any European country always maintain a sense of awareness of your surroundings.

Keep an eye on your gear 24/7: It’s very important that you always be careful NEVER to leave your valuables out of sight. You can find out more about travel cover for valuables and gadgets and other high value items here. Make copies of all key documents you’ll be travelling with—passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets—and keep them separate from the originals so you’ll have proof of purchase if anything happens. Exercise caution in hostels and on trains; padlocking your bags to the luggage rack if you’re on an overnight train or bus is always a good idea.

Hold your cards (ID and cash) close to your chest: When in Europe you’ll need to have your passport, ID, credit cards and cash on you for all that great shopping! Always ensure you carry copies of your passport and any other form of ID with you. Also, a good idea is to have a money belt or neck wallet to protect your credit cards and cash when you’re out and about.

Have fun but don’t overdo it: We always advocate for enjoying yourself as much as you can while travelling but it’s also important to be aware of your surroundings and who you trust when travelling, especially if you are travelling solo around Europe and don’t know the local lingo. With a large number of festivals and enticing nightlife around Europe all year round we suggest not to overdo it when it comes to drinking and partying.

Traveller tip 1: Always make sure you’ve done your research on each of the European countries you’re planning to visit as there may be UK government imposed travel bans or restrictions in place. If you decide to travel to a country on a ‘Do Not Travel’ list be aware there is no cover as this is a section exclusion.

Will I need a Schengen Visa to go to Europe?

Since January 1, 2021, British citizens (still) do not need to apply for a visa in advance for short-term visits to the EU. According to the Schengen Borders Code, they can stay within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. To learn more about entry requirements for countries in the Schengen are check the UK Government website.

Travel insurance may be able to bridge the gap for some of these benefits for UK travellers – check out our Brexit article that may help clear any queries you have.

Traveller tip 2: UK residents should have their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) when travelling in the EU. This will give you free, or reduced cost, medical treatment. However, it's always a good idea to have travel insurance as a GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. With World Nomads travel insurance at your side, you may be covered for private medical healthcare costs, costs associated with mountain rescue in ski resorts or being repatriated back to the UK, or with lost or stolen property.

What other tips for safe travel do you offer?

We have compiled this general information and handy tips on tourist visas and passports, and we have you covered if you’re looking for more Europe travel inspiration. We also have information on which countries are accepting travellers in our safety travel alerts section.

True Claims Stories

Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

With a selection of insurance plans to choose from you’ll have coverage, whether you’re enjoying the great outdoors on a family camping adventure in Trentino in Italy, going solo on a surfing trip to sunny Nazare in Portugal, or hiking with your travel buddy along El Camino in Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance before you land in your favorite Europe destination — or if you're already there.

World Nomads offers cover for several activities, from mountain biking to skiing, surfing, kayaking and scuba diving.

What’s covered for your trip to Europe

All World Nomads travel insurance plans cover you for the following:

Whatever your choice of overseas vacation, it’s important to choose the right level of coverage. Read the policy wording, browse the World Nomads’ Help Center, or contact our customer service team to see if what you’re planning to do is covered under your plan. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

Like most destinations, traveling through Europe requires a certain level of common sense.

What should I look out for when traveling around Europe?

Beware petty theft and pickpockets in key hotspots: While most countries in Europe are amongst the safest to travel to there is always the chance that you might end up being pickpocketed or being victim of a scam in many top tourist hotspots. When in crowded areas in any European country always maintain a sense of awareness of your surroundings.

Keep an eye on your gear 24/7: It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. If you're after travel insurance cover for tech gear and other high value items read more here. You should make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets — and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.

Have fun but don’t overdo it: We always advocate for enjoying yourself as much as you can while traveling but it’s also important to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you're traveling solo around Europe and don’t know the local lingo. We suggest not to overdo it when it comes to drinking and partying. Always be careful of accepting drinks from strangers especially at big events as there are a lot of music festivals and sporting events throughout the year in Europe.

Whether you’re traveling to Europe from Australia, North America, India or Japan or any other part of the globe, travel insurance can be a life saver if you or your loved ones end up in a hospital in Italy with a huge medical bill, or if you need to return home unexpectedly and your Euro trip is cut short.

Frequently asked questions when going to Europe

Will I need a Schengen Visa to go to Europe?

When traveling to Europe, it’s very important to have a valid passport and a Schengen visa if you’re not a European citizen as this will help you move freely around the 27 EU member states. Depending on the Schengen country where you are applying for the visa, authorities may ask you for a Schengen visa letter.

Important: The Schengen Agreement allows residents of certain European countries to travel freely around the Schengen Area as though it's a single country. For travelers from other countries, you may need to get a valid Schengen visa to do the same. Before you can get your visa, you may need valid travel insurance. We have also more handy tips on tourist visas and passports.

Am I covered if I want to go to a European country for the day or a weekend?

We get it, you want to make the most out of your travels around Europe and want to fit in as many countries as possible. The best way to be covered for all European destinations is to select ‘Europe’ or ‘Worldwide’ when you get a quote and choose your destinations. That way you will be covered for any country you visit within Europe. For more information check out our FAQ article - What countries or regions do I choose to get a quote?.

Also, depending on your Country of Residence and policy you have chosen, our policies may cover you during a stopover or if you’re in transit. For more information read our help Center article - Do I need extra country cover if I am only making a stop-over, but not leaving the airport?

Note: To access the correct information just set your Country of Residence from the country picker and it will redirect you to the most up to date information.

Do I need separate travel insurance insurance for each country in Europe?

No, our policies may cover multiple Schengen and EU countries under a single plan. All you need to do is select your intended destinations in Europe or simply choose 'Europe' when you get a quote. Cover will depend on your country of residence and the type of travel insurance plan you've purchased. If in doubt you can contact us.

Do I need a COVID vaccination to visit Europe?

While many countries have eased COVID restrictions, some conditions remain in place. Entry requirements vary depending on the country you plan to visit, and your Country of Residence and conditions of entry change regularly. We encourage you to seek advice prior to traveling.

Which European countries do your travel insurance policies cover?

Just like no two travelers are the same, no two countries are the same. Most European destinations are covered, but you should always check the PDS for your Country of Residence and policy details for the cover you choose.

Travel insurance for surfing

World-class breaks and classic beach towns. Surf’s up! Where’s your travel insurance?

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Whether you’re looking for stunning sunsets with a water perspective, or just wanting to escape the crowd and surf at a secluded surf spot half way across the world, it’s always a good idea to be prepared if your gear gets lost or stolen. Our travel cover can help get you back on your feet and back on the surfboard in no time.

Along with packing your surfboard, sunblock and shades, you should look at adding travel insurance. World Nomads can help get you back on your feet if your surf break turns into a total wipe-out.

Travel insurance for surfing

As surf enthusiasts, many of our international travellers can catch the waves with the coverage we provide, from uncharted towns with pristine beaches to the most popular surf breaks.

  • Gear protection: Got your surfboard or stolen while surf town-hopping in Costa Rica? Our gear coverage can help with replacing belongings that were swiped from under your nose.
  • Emergency medical: Long lefthanders can be epic to ride but not if it ends up in a crash. Emergency medical coverage may come in handy in the case of an accident or injury.
  • Evacuation: Your bohemian surfer paradise may be far away from the medical facilities that can give you the treatment you need. You can get transported to the medical facility which may be best for your care, subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance.
  • Trip cancellation: Has a sick or injured traveling companion put a stop to your surf break? Your plan may be able to recover the travel expenses.
  • Checked-in baggage: We offer cover if your gear is stolen, lost or accidentally damaged by a common carrier (e.g. airline or bus company). Sporting equipment checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight.

Your coverage will vary according to whether you choose a Standard or an Explorer plan. Read your policy for details on maximum benefit limits and exclusion and conditions of your coverage.

Besides wave surfing, World Nomads may also cover:

  • Land surfing
  • Stand-up paddle surfing
  • Windsurfing
  • Sandboarding
  • Kite surfing
  • Wakeboarding

An upgrade for certain sports may be required and terms and conditions apply for each sport. Check your policy for details or contact us if you have questions.

What's not covered for surfing travel insurance?

Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (like tackle big-wave off-shore surfing when you’re only a beginner).  Some things we may not cover include:

  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team advise you to do
  • Any expenses that relate to a pre-existing medical condition, as explained in the policy wording
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source
  • The policy excess, deductible or co-pay amount as shown in the policy wording
  • If you surf while under the influence of alcohol or drugs… water and alcohol never mix!
  • Search and rescue costs
  • Professional competitive surfing

How to get the most out of your travel insurance

When it comes to any sport, safety should always come first. Your health ─ and your travel insurance cover─ depends on your responsible behaviour. Follow these tips to stay alert and aware (and to ensure that you won’t invalidate your travel insurance).

  • Know where to go. Don’t frequent beaches with dangerous shore breaks, riptides or shark sightings or surf near areas with piers, cliffs, rocks and boats. Where there are warnings, be careful – and heed them.
  • Don’t go in over your head. Not a good idea to hop on a board if you don’t know how to swim. Or attempt big-wave surfing or aerial manoeuvres when you’ve only taken one lesson.
  • Follow the rules. Check for suitable weather conditions before heading to the beach; use a surf leash / leg rope.
  • No pro sports. So cool that your 9-to-5 is spending time on the waves but unfortunately, professional sporting activities aren’t covered by travel insurance.
  • Keep an eye on your equipment. Don’t leave your limited-edition surfboard unattended out on the beach when you go for a water break or declare your wallet stolen when you forgot it on the airplane. Those 'I spaced out' moments don’t qualify for cover.

This is a summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the plans described. Please refer to the actual plans for complete details of cover and exclusions.

Travel insurance for surfing

World-class breaks and classic beach towns. Surf’s up! Where’s your travel insurance?

If surfing at Pipeline in Hawaii or heading to Kuta beach in Bali is on your next surf break abroad then it’s a good idea to know how you could be covered if you happen to have your gear lost or stolen. If your surf trip is cut short our coverage can help get you back on your feet and back on the surfboard in no time.

Along with your surfboard, wetsuit, sunblock and shades, you should also look at packing travel insurance. World Nomads can help get you back on your feet if your surf break turns into a bruising wipe-out.

Travel insurance for surfing

As surf enthusiasts, Irish can get ready to hit the surf with the coverage we provide, from uncharted towns with pristine beaches to the most popular surf breaks.

You can get transported to the medical facility which may be best for your care, subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance.

  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team advise you to do
  • Any expenses that relate to a pre-existing medical condition, as explained in the policy wording

Or attempt big-wave surfing manoeuvres when you’ve only taken one lesson.
  • Follow the rules. Check for suitable weather conditions before heading to the beach; use a surf leash / leg rope.
  • No pro sports or athletic competitions.
Those “I spaced out” moments don’t qualify for cover.

This is a summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the plans described. Please refer to the actual plans for complete details of cover and exclusions.
