Travel insurance for kayaking

Everything you need to know about travel insurance for kayaking and rafting

    As featured in:

Going Kayaking or Rafting on your Holiday?

Exotic sunsets, the water lapping at your bow, hurtling down river rapids; experiences on the water are often the most unforgettable part of any holiday. From paddling with the family on Lake Superior, to sea kayaking the turquoise waters around Indonesia’s Raja Ampat archipelago, get your next holiday flowing on a kayaking or rafting adventure.

What Kayaking and Rafting do we cover?

When you get a travel insurance quote for your kayaking or rafting trip, you need to specify the adventure activity in your policy. If you don’t, you may not be covered.

When you 'choose your options', select your kayaking/rafting activity according to the following activity category:

  • Kayaking: (inland/coastal waters within 3 nautical miles, grades 1-5)
  • Sea Kayaking: (Beyond 3 nautical miles)
  • Sea Kayaking: (inland/coastal waters within 3 nautical miles, grades 1-5)
  • White Water Kayaking (inland/coastal waters within 2 nautical miles, grades 1-5)

What do those Grades Mean?

Several activity options above mention International River Grades which can be described as:

  • Class 1: Easy
  • Class 2: Novice
  • Class 3: Intermediate
  • Class 4: Advanced
  • Class 5: Expert
  • Class 6: Extreme and Exploratory Rapids (unfortunately we can’t offer cover for this class/grade of kayaking or rafting)

We offer cover for river grades (also known as classes) from Class 1 to Class 5.

Choosing the Right Policy For You

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific activity plans.

Depending on the type of kayaking or rafting activity you’re planning on doing, you may need to pay for an upgrade to be covered.

For example, if you are venturing more than 3 nautical miles from your kayaking/rafting point of departure an additional specified item is required on our policies. This means your travel insurance policy will require an additional premium so that you can be covered. If you are kayaking/rafting more than 3 nautical miles and you haven't specified this on your World Nomads policy, you won’t be covered!

If you’re not sure whether your kayaking or rafting adventure is covered, you can contact us.

What is Covered by World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Our policies may cover you on your kayaking and rafting adventures (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Emergency medical: Emergency medical coverage could come in handy if you suffer an accident or injury that results in you going to hospital. Find more info here.
  • Evacuation cover: your water adventure may be far away from medical facilities. With our cover, you can get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. If your injuries are worse than first thought, you could be repatriated back to your Country of Residence. Click here to learn more.
  • Trip cancellation or disruption: if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your travel expenses.
  • Natural catastrophe: If you find yourself amid a natural disaster, or your destination is affected by extreme weather, we can offer coverage if you can’t use your booked accommodation or need to move to a safer location.
  • And more! Check out what else is covered on our policies.

Keep in mind that benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions apply depending on your Country of Residence, so be sure to read your policy wording carefully. If you have any questions about your cover, contact us.

Rafting and kayaking: What’s not covered

While there are several kayaking and rafting adventures, we can offer coverage for, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any Class 6 kayaking or rafting trips – sorry, but that’s a no-go for us.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to your Country of Residence.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.

Safety Tips and Handy Hints for your Paddling Trip

  • Before you launch, remember to check the International River Grading of the river or water you’re on so you won’t invalidate your cover.
  • Kayaking and rafting are physically demanding – make sure you’re up to it. Plan a trip within your capabilities.
  • Check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your instructor/guides.
  • Wear the right gear – it can get cold on the water and being cold and wet can lead to hypothermia.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Essential travel tips for Brazil

The beat of Brazil is unlike anywhere else. Nature-filled experiences abound, and a life-loving energy fills the air. To travel here is to experience the world at its best. From eating your way through the culinary creations of the country to finding your rhythm at Carnival Brazil is a destination for every traveler.

But before you pack your bags and hop on a plane to South America’s largest country, there are a few things to consider when it comes to staying safe in Latin America. Here’s how World Nomads travel insurance can bolster your time in Brazil.

What’s covered

Heading to Brazil without travel insurance is like riding in a car without a seatbelt - it can be risky business. We offer two levels of cover, Standard and Explorer. Depending on your Country of Residence and the level of cover you need, our travel insurance may cover you for:

  • Baggage and personal effects
  • Extended stays
  • Overseas medical emergencies and hospital expenses
  • Unexpected trip cancellation
  • Travel delays and trip interruption
  • A wide variety of sports, activities and experiences.

Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, even while traveling.

Note: all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance is not blanket cover-all and there are some things we do not cover. It’s important to read your policy wording carefully to ensure you fully understand what is and isn’t covered, but some of the common claims we see which we do not cover include:

  • Cancellation costs if you simply change your mind
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by your Country of Residence.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Incidents resulting from reckless behavior

If you’ve got any questions, or are unsure if something is covered, please contact us for more information.

Health and safety while in Brazil

While Brazil is considered a relatively safe country to travel in, like anywhere, there are health and safety concerns that have a penchant for ruining your jaunt. Exercise a certain level of caution when traveling here and keep your guard up for the following common complaints:

Crime in cities

Muggings and other opportunistic crimes can be an issue in major cities. Be aware of your surroundings in places like markets, tourist hotspots, ATMs, and on public transport, particularly at night. Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo can be hotspots for crime. Pay particular attention in places like Ipanema beach, Christ the Redeemer statue, and Sao Paulo Cathedral.

Keep an eye on your gear 24/7

It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. There’s always the chance that you might end up being pickpocketed or being victim of a scam in many top tourist hotspots. When in crowded areas always maintain a sense of awareness of your surroundings. You should also make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets — and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.

Swimming safety

Brazil’s beaches are brilliant, but many have turbulent seas. Strong rips are a common issue on popular beaches like Ipanema and in Fortaleza. Sharks can be found in the water here too and shark attacks have happened. Practice caution and always heed warning signs posted on beaches.

Mosquito-borne diseases

The Amazon Rainforest is an insect’s paradise and insect-borne diseases are a real threat particularly in the wet season. Zika virus, malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever are all insect-borne diseases that may be contracted in Brazil, not just the Amazon. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of viruses such as Zika before you go. Cover up and use insect repellent to reduce your risk of being bitten.

Traveling in the Amazon

Covering more than 1 billion acres and spanning 9 countries, the Amazon is the Earth’s most grand rainforest. With approximately 60 percent of the rainforest located in Brazil, there’s much to see and do here. Home to lengthy winding rivers (some of the longest in the world) and an impressive array of species, it’s rich in biodiversity and there are countless ways to experience it all. From jungle tours to cruising the river tributaries, bird spotting to scaling the towering canopy in the name of adrenaline there’s no shortage of ways to spend your time - nor ways things can possibly go sideways. Stay safe and healthy while exploring the jungle with our guide on how to prepare for your first time in the Brazilian Amazon.

Access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team around the clock

World Nomads travelers have access to 24/7 Emergency Assistance. If something goes wrong and you need help, contact our team. They can help get you find local medical facilities if needed, provide local consular details and information and in the worst-case scenario, help get you home if you’re seriously injured or ill and need to be repatriated. When you call (free from anywhere in the world), make sure you have your policy number and a contact number for where you are so we can help.

FAQ’s

Is Zika virus an issue in Brazil?

Yes, you can contract Zika virus while in Brazil. The virus is transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes, a type of mosquito found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including Brazil.

What are the recommended vaccinations for Brazil?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for people entering the country; however, we recommend you consult a healthcare professional well in advance of traveling to Brazil. To help maintain your health while in South America, consider certain vaccinations irrespective of Brazil’s entry requirements.

What to do if you have to cancel your trip due to illness or injury

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

1. Rearrange or cancel your bookings

As soon as you know that you won’t be able to use any pre-booked or pre-paid accommodation, transport or tours, you must try to rearrange them, or if necessary, cancel.

Just remember, if you decide to rearrange, we’ll only pay up to the amount it would have cost you to cancel those arrangements. If you don’t rearrange or cancel straight away, we won’t cover any additional rearrangement or cancellation costs that arise as a result. But you should only cancel arrangements when it’s absolutely necessary. For example, if your doctor says you can’t fly for two days, but you cancel a three week trip, rather than putting it back by two days, we’ll only cover cancellation of two days’ worth of accommodation, not the entire booking.

2. Get it in writing

To support your claim, you’ll need to get the following:

  • Doctor (or other medical practitioner)’s report, confirming what happened and the nature of the illness or injury.
  • Hospital Admission report (if the person was admitted to hospital)
  • Ambulance report (if they were involved)
  • Police report (if they were involved)
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

3. Keep your itineraries and receipts

You’ll need to keep your receipts, itineraries and booking and cancellation confirmations including details of any refunds received for any affected transport and accommodation.

Our suggestions should help you avoid unnecessary costs, gather the right evidence and help keep your claim hassle free.

Travel Insurance for mountain biking

Whether you’re a hobby mountain biker or serious fiend, travel insurance for mountain biking can stand you in good stead when the mountain wins.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Nothing beats heading down a mountain or cross country with your lunch in your backpack and your feet peddling you onwards. World Nomads love mountain biking, which is why it’s on our list of covered adventures. Before you head off into the great outdoors, read our tips to make the most of your travel insurance.

What types of mountain biking adventures are covered?

As long as you’re not doing anything stupid, like riding without a helmet or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, World Nomads offers cover for mountain biking (on and off road, cross country, or downhill) for different elevations up to 6000 meters. Please be aware that the availability to cover different mountain biking altitudes will vary by Country of Residence and will vary depending on the plan you have chosen.

Note: There are specific terms and conditions, limits and exclusions that apply to mountain biking, so be sure to check the exclusions section of this article, and also check your policy wording carefully. If you’re not sure whether something is covered, contact us.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific mountain biking plans.

When buying a policy you may want to consider upgrading your cover if you want to be covered to go mountain biking up to 6,000m in altitude. You can’t upgrade your policy after the cooling-off period so choose carefully. Check out your policy wording and contact customer service if you’re unsure what your cover includes.

What’s actually covered when you go mountain biking?

  1. If you’re injured or have an accident whilst biking

It’s not nice to think about, but if you suffer an injury or accident on your ride, our emergency medical coverage may cover you for emergencies that require:

  • Hospitalization
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Ambulances

If you need medical treatment, it’s essential that you get in touch with our Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible so they can support you.

  1. If you need to be evacuated or repatriated

You might be riding in a remote area, far from medical assistance, so our policies include coverage if you need to be evacuated to a medical facility.

  1. Emergency Assistance Team available 24/7

Having an emergency in a foreign country can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy means you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Our Emergency Assistance team can help with a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re traveling, can speak multiple languages, and they’re available 365 days a year.

  1. Cancellation of your ride

If your ride is cancelled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your unused/additional travel expenses. This includes if your ride is affected by a natural disaster, or your travel destination is affected by an extreme weather event.

  1. Rental Car Excess

If you’ve hired a car to take you to go on your rides and you suffer a car breakdown, traffic accident or your vehicle is broken into, some World Nomads plans may offer damage collision waiver (also called insurance excess) coverage, depending on your Country of Residence and your choice of a Standard or Explorer plan.

Note: keep in mind that all plans are different depending on the plan chosen and your Country of Residence. Terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions apply. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. If you’re not sure about anything, contact us.

What’s not covered when mountain biking?

While we can offer coverage for mountain biking, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • No matter how safe you are, we won’t cover any mountain biking on the infamous Death Road – otherwise known as Yungas Road in Bolivia.
  • We only cover mountain biking that is incidental to your holiday – that means you only plan to cycle or go mountain biking for a day or two here and there and you’re not using a bike as your main mode of transport while on your travels.
  • Riding at altitudes over 6,000 metres
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads, or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.

World Nomad’s handy tips for your mountain bike adventures

  • Make sure your bike is set up correctly before you ride – check the saddle, pedals , handlebars and tyre pressure.
  • Put your safety first: only go riding with professional, qualified, licensed and reputable operators. If you don’t, your cover may be void. If something doesn’t feel right, then don’t go.
  • Keep your body loose and springy and be prepared to stand up on the bike – doing this moves you with the bike and can help you avoid injury and accidents.

Need some inspo for your next mountain biking adventure?

Check out our handy guides and insider travel tips on the best places to go mountain biking:

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Skiing and Snowboarding Travel Insurance Coverage

Canadian Residents Can Protect Against Skiing Injuries, Ski Resort Closures, Damaged Gear & More

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance:

  • World Nomads offers travel insurance for skiing and snowboarding to help cover medical emergencies, stolen gear and trip cancellations.
  • Our plans include emergency medical evacuation coverage if you get injured while skiing or snowboarding in remote areas.
  • We provide gear protection if your ski equipment is stolen or accidentally damaged by your common carrier during your trip.
  • If your trip is disrupted by illness or injuries (amongst other covered reasons), adventure travel insurance for skiing may help cover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.

Are you dreaming of skiing down slopes in Italy, Austria, Switzerland or France? How about within Canada? No matter where you’re headed for wintry fun, it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected when skiing and snowboarding. Ski travel insurance for Europe, the US and within Canada all include a range of benefits that could help with everything from stolen ski gear to unexpected medical emergency expenses.

Why should I consider international ski insurance for my trip?

Unexpected issues can mess up even the most carefully planned ski trips. For example, those seeking fresh powder flock to Japan each winter to hit the slopes, but what happens if an injury puts a halt to your fun? Ski insurance for Japan may help you bounce back quickly with support for medical and travel emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently when you’re skiing outside of your home province.

Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Plan is limited once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels outside of your home province too.

Ski and Snowboard Travel Insurance: What may be covered?

Whether you’re in fresh powder or on the bunny hill, navigating steep (and even not so steep) terrain can be tricky. It only takes one bad fall or collision to end up with a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder or a wrist fracture. If you’re heading south to the United States to hit the slopes in Breckenridge, Vail or Palisades, you may want to consider getting a quote for travel insurance for skiing in the US. We also offer coverage for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
For injuries when skiing that require emergency medical treatment

  2. 24/7 Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation, on or off the slopes

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my ski trip?

World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan but includes up to $5,000,000 CAD in emergency medical expenses and $2,500 CAD for trip cancellation.
  • Explorer Plan – This adventure travel insurance plan also covers skiing but has higher limits of coverage.

Even if your main goal is to go skiing, you’ll probably also be doing other things like snowmobiling or snow biking. That’s totally fine, because there are over 250+ sports, activities and experiences that could be covered when you purchase adventure travel insurance. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list skiing, snowboarding and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.  Costs may vary depending on the activities you list. Most forms of Skiing are a Level 3 activity and require an additional premium to cover, so be sure to buy the proper coverage for your ski trip!

If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

Nomads tip: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

What may not be covered when on a ski trip?

Save the cocktails for apres-ski. If you start taking shots off of the shot ski, and then get hurt, you may not be covered. Travel insurance for skiing won’t cover you if you are injured when you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some other things that aren’t covered include:

  • Unattended baggage, ski gear or personal items
  • Damage to ski equipment while you’re using it
  • Not following government ‘Do Not Travel’ advisories issued by the Canadian government
  • Travelling or skiing in your home province
  • Search and rescue missions
  • Not following the International Ski Federation code or the ski resort’s regulations
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy
  • Competitions, racing or national squad training, acrobatics, tricks, stunting, freestyle, aerials or jumps.
  • Ignoring your doctor if they have explicitly advised you not to go skiing or snowboarding

Top safety tips we recommend for skiing

From our own time on the slopes, we’ve discovered that you never know what might happen next. We’ve learned that it helps tremendously to be prepared in those situations – whether you’re skiing in Europe, Japan, the US, or even here in Canada. Here are a few of our personal tips that you may find helpful when planning your next ski vacation.

  • Always wear a helmet that fits you properly.
  • Dress in multiple layers and look for insulated clothing made of moisture-wicking material. You’ll also want to make sure your outerwear is waterproof.
  • Take a lesson from a reputable instructor.
  • Ski within your skill level. (If you’ve just taken your first lesson, you should probably avoid the black diamonds for a while.)
  • Control your speed and stay in control.
  • Stay on marked trails.
  • Check with the Public Health Agency of Canada to see if they have issued any travel health notices for the destination where you’ll be skiing.
  • Register with Canadians Abroad to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Save a copy of your travel insurance for skiing documents in your phone. Have the phone number for the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team easily accessible as well.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for skiiing. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Are skiing and snowboarding covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, skiing and snowboarding may be covered under both plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance, but you’ll still need to list these activities when you purchase your travel insurance for skiing policy. Most skiing activities are considered Level 3; if you aren’t sure if something is covered, we suggest you contact us to ask.

  • What types of incidents are covered while on a ski trip?

If your trip is cancelled, delayed, or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your unused, non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses (up to the policy limits), and this could include unused, prepaid, non-refundable tours that you paid for in advance. If you get hurt while skiing and require medical assistance, emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You could also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags or if the Canadian government issues a travel advisory telling travellers not to go to a destination on your itinerary.

US Residents Can Protect Against Skiing Injuries, Ski Resort Closures, Damaged Gear & More

At a glance:

  • All World Nomads plans cover losses resulting from skiing and snowboarding trips. Higher-tier plans offer coverage for more extreme skiing and snowboarding activities.
  • Emergency Medical Coverage may assist with medical costs and transport if you're seriously hurt while skiing or snowboarding.
  • Our travel protection plans include transportation if your condition is severe, acute, or life-threatening and adequate treatment is not available in your immediate area. Additional terms apply.
  • Gear and baggage protection helps cover lost, stolen, or damaged ski gear and luggage.
  • An optional Cancel for Any Reason upgrade is available on some plans (additional cost and state restrictions may apply).

Are you dreaming of peaks in Italy, Austria, Switzerland or France? Or are you planning to stay in the United States to hit the slopes in Breckenridge, Vail, or Palisades? No matter where you’re headed for wintry fun, it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected when skiing and snowboarding. A travel protection plan that includes ski trip insurance coverage for Europe, the US, or any other snowy destination can help protect your adventure. Travel insurance benefits for skiing may help with everything from stolen ski gear to unexpected medical expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my ski trip?

Unexpected issues can mess up even the most carefully planned ski trips. For example, those seeking fresh powder flock to Japan each winter to hit the slopes, but what happens if a blizzard hits and puts a halt to your fun? A travel protection plan that includes ski insurance coverage for Japan may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. Getting evacuated off a snowy mountain in a foreign country is not cheap and with a sport as risky as skiing, travel insurance can be even more important.

Travel insurance and non-insurance services for skiing and snowboarding trips: What may be covered?

Whether you’re on a black diamond at Chamonix Mont Blanc or on the bunny hill in the Dolomites, navigating steep (and even not so steep) terrain can be tricky. It only takes one bad fall or collision to end up with a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder, or a wrist fracture. Since unexpected situations can happen on the slopes, we’ve designed our travel protection plans to include travel insurance coverage for skiing and snowboarding trips. We also offer coverage for losses related to more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
For injuries that happen when skiing

  2. Non-insurance Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation on or off the slopes

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
Damaged or stolen ski gear or luggage that is lost

  4. Trip DelaysInterruptionsCancellations
A money-saver if inclement weather keeps you from going on your ski trip

Terms, conditions, and limitations apply to all mentioned coverages. Get a quote and compare the plans to see which level of coverage is right for you.

All plans include adventure travel insurance coverage for skiing, as well as several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your trip. These include delayed or lost baggage tracking and delivery, portable health records and pre-departure telehealth services.

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my ski trip?

World Nomads offers four plans for U.S. residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. Even when your main goal is to go skiing, you may want to enjoy other fun winter activities like snowmobiling or snowshoeing. That’s totally fine, because you may be covered for losses resulting from more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences when you purchase a travel protection plan.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan, but includes travel insurance coverage for incidents while skiing (cross country/nordic skiing on marked trails, dry slope, heli, on piste or off piste within resort boundaries, power assisted, and snowblading.) Snowboarding (dry slope, heli, and on piste or off piste within resort boundaries) is also included. It includes up to $125,000 in emergency medical expenses and up to $2,500 for trip cancellation.
  • Explorer Plan – This plan includes everything in the Standard plan, plus even more activities – including more extreme skiing and snowboarding activities such as acrobatics, free-style, jumping, flying, stunting, backcountry/outside of resort boundary/alpine ski touring, by helicopter/snow cat, racing, and skiing and snowboarding in a terrain park within a resort. Skiing with a miniwing (speed riding) is also covered, as is serving as a ski or snowboard instructor or guide (paid or volunteer.) It also has higher limits of coverage for most benefits.
  • Epic Plan – This covers everything the Explorer plan covers, plus even more activities – including glacier walking (up to 26,247 feet/8,000 meters) and ice climbing (up to 26,247 feet/8,000 meters). It also has the highest benefit limits of coverage.
  • Annual Plan – If you’re planning multiple trips throughout the year, this plan may be for you. Just buy once and stay protected all year. It includes adventure travel insurance coverage for skiing, as well as all of the other activities covered in the Standard Plan.

NOMADS TIP: For even more trip cancellation flexibility, check out the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ benefit. It can be added to Explorer and Epic plans. Available at an additional cost for U.S. residents, except in New York.

What may not be covered when on your skiing trip?

Save the cocktails for apres-ski. Travel insurance for skiing trips won’t cover you if you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some other things that aren’t covered include:

  • Unattended baggage, ski gear or personal items
  • Damage to ski equipment while you’re using it
  • Not following ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued by the US government prior to departure
  • Participation in activities not listed in our 250+ sports, activities and experiences
  • Ignoring your doctor if they have advised in writing that you are not medically fit to travel
  • Traveling or skiing within 100 miles of your home
  • Wear and tear from everyday use of sporting equipment. Gear that is in use is not covered.
  • Skiing or snowboarding in a competition or for salary/competition
  • Pre-existing Conditions. However, you could be eligible for the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver if you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period and were medically able and not disabled from travel, based on the assessment of a physician, to travel at the time of purchase when you buy the plan. A definition of a pre-existing condition can be found in your plan document.

Top safety tips we recommend for your skiing trips

We’ve had many perfect runs in ski parks around the world. Every once in a while though, things happen. We’ve learned that it helps tremendously to be prepared in those situations – whether you’re skiing in Europe, Japan, Canada or even here in the US. Here’s a few of our personal tips that you may find helpful when planning your next ski trip.

  • Stay on marked trails.
  • Don’t drink and ski. Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs increases your chance of being injured – and if you get hurt, you may not be covered by your travel insurance coverage for skiing.
  • Take advantage of the pre-departure medical consultation included in your non-insurance services and see if there are any vaccinations or prescription medications, like altitude sickness pills, recommended for your destination (additional costs may apply).
  • Check with the Department of State to see if they have issued any travel advisories for your destination.
  • Enroll in the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Have a copy of your plan documents saved in your phone. Save the phone number for the 24/7 Non-insurance Emergency Assistance team and have that easily accessible as well.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for skiing and snowboarding. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Can skiing and snowboarding be covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, the Standard and Annual plans include travel insurance coverage for losses related to incidents that occur while skiing (cross country/nordic skiing on marked trails, dry slope, heli, on piste or off piste within resort boundaries, power assisted, and snowblading.) Losses related to snowboarding (dry slope, heli, and on piste or off piste within resort boundaries) are also included. The Explorer Plan includes everything in the Standard plan, plus even more activities – including more extreme skiing and snowboarding, including acrobatics, free-style, jumping, flying, stunting, backcountry/outside of resort boundary/alpine ski touring, by helicopter/snow cat, racing, and skiing and snowboarding in a terrain park within a resort. Skiing with a miniwing (speed riding) is also covered, as is serving as a ski or snowboard instructor or guide (paid or volunteer.) If you want higher limits of coverage, you’ll want to consider the Explorer or Epic plan.

  • What happens if there’s no snow and I can’t ski on my trip?

We can’t control the weather, but a travel protection plan may help. For example, if you have a travel protection plan that includes ski insurance coverage for your trip to Europe, and your ski resort in the Dolomites closes all or part of its facilities for at least one day due to lack of snow or inclement weather that causes a cessation of services, you may get $250 per incident as a ‘travel inconvenience’ (up to plan limits). You must have purchased the Explorer or Epic plan within the time sensitive period in order to be eligible. Additional terms and conditions apply.

  • What happens if the ski slopes close during my trip?

Your travel protection plan from World Nomads may help ease the disappointment. For instance, if you have a travel protection plan that includes ski insurance coverage for your trip to Japan, and at least 50% of the trails or slopes at your ski resort in Niseko are closed for at least eight consecutive hours for various reasons, subject to terms and conditions, you may receive reimbursement for your ski lift ticket. Read your plan for details of this “Trip Interruption” benefit available on the Explorer and Epic Plans.

  • Can I purchase a plan after my trip starts?

Yes. If your trip has already started, World Nomads can still offer you coverage. You can buy a plan that includes adventure travel insurance coverage for skiing online anytime, from anywhere in the world. World Nomads Travel Insurance for U.S. residents takes effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan. If you’re already traveling and want to get coverage for skiing, you’ll need to purchase your plan at least the day before you need coverage.

  • What should I do if I get hurt while skiing?

If you get hurt while skiing, contact local authorities as soon as you’re able to do so for immediate attention. World Nomads Travel Insurance may help cover the cost of medical treatment, hospital stays, or even emergency medical evacuation if needed (subject to approval.) Access to a 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance team is also included for support anytime, anywhere when you purchase a travel protection plan.

  • Do I get my money back if I cancel a trip?

Trip cancellation coverage is offered by all plans offered by World Nomads, and you may be reimbursed for pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason. U.S. residents (except those that live in New York) also have the ability to add additional cancel for any reason coverage when certain World Nomads plans are purchased.

  • What happens if my bags are delayed?
When you purchase travel insurance coverage for skiing trips, baggage coverage is also included. If your checked-in bags are delayed more than 12 consecutive hours on the way to your destination, your plan may reimburse you for reasonable essential items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited. Your coverage also includes non-insurance service that can help track down your bag and get it delivered to you.
