Canadian travellers heading to Africa for a safari face unique insurance needs—from costly medical evacuations to lost camera gear. World Nomads offers travel insurance tailored for Canadians, with safari coverage included in every plan. Whether you're planning an African safari to see the Big 5 in the Serengeti or watch zebras roam in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, your adventure is sure to be unforgettable. But whenever you're overseas and surrounded by wildlife, you should be prepared for the unexpected.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my African safari?

From animal attacks to an unplanned case of malaria, unexpected issues can derail even the most carefully planned safari. Travel insurance for safaris may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to Canadian needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently – whether you're looking for rhinos in Nepal or photographing elephants in Kenya.

Nomads tip: Each policy includes a '10-Day Right to Examine' period, giving you time after purchase to review the details, making sure the coverage works for you. If you decide that you are not satisfied with the policy, you may cancel it within 10 days and you will be given a full refund of the premium you paid, provided you have not started your trip and you do not want to make a claim or to exercise any other right under the policy.

Choosing the Right Safari Travel Insurance Plan (Standard vs. Explorer)

World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan but includes safari travel insurance as well as up to $5,000,000 CAD in emergency medical expenses and up to $2,500 for trip cancellation for Canadian travellers.
  • Explorer Plan – This plan also covers safaris but has higher limits of coverage.

Even if your main goal is to go on a safari, you may want to do other fun things too, like bushwalking in Botswana or whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River. That’s totally fine, because there are over 250 other sports, activities and experiences that could be covered when you purchase travel insurance for Africa. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list safaris, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.  Costs may vary depending on the additional activities you list.

If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

NOMADS TIP: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

What may not be covered when on a safari?

Some things we may not cover include:

  • Unattended baggage or personal items
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy
  • Ignoring your doctor if they have explicitly advised you not to travel to a particular destination or go on a safari
  • Handling of big game or dangerous animals
  • Not following government ‘Do Not Travel’ advisories issued by the Canadian government

Top safety tips we recommend for your safari

  • Do your research and book with an accredited and eco-friendly tour operator
  • Make sure your guide has a first-aid kit. It doesn’t hurt to have a small one in your backpack too.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions at all times and view wildlife from a safe distance.
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Don’t be afraid to ask if the water is safe to drink when you are in remote locations.
  • Talk to your doctor to see if prescription antimalarial medication or other vaccinations are recommended. Depending on the medication, you may need to start it prior to your trip.
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants to help protect you from bug bites.
  • Don’t wear open toed shoes when walking around in the bush.
  • Check with the Public Health Agency of Canada to see if they have issued any travel health notices for your destination.
  • Register with Canadians Abroad to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Don’t try to handle big game or dangerous animals.
  • Don’t walk around alone at night.
  • Take along a copy of the documents showing proof of your safari travel insurance. You may even want to save a copy in your phone so it is easily accessible.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for safari. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Are safaris covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, safaris are covered under both plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance, but make sure you list this as an activity you’ll be participating in when you purchase your policy. Safaris are considered a Level 1 activity and they are automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list this as an activity when you purchase your safari travel insurance policy. However, you’ll need to pay an additional premium to be covered for any Level 2 and Level 3 activities like zip lining and hang gliding. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, we suggest you contact us to ask.

  • What types of incidents are covered while on a safari?

If your trip is cancelled, delayed, or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses (up to the policy limits), and this could include unused, pre-paid, non-refundable safari tours that you paid for in advance. If your safari jeep gets in a wreck and you require medical assistance, emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You could also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags or Canadian government travel advisories advising travellers not to travel to a destination on your itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can my kids travel on my Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy?
Absolutely! And the best part? When you purchase a World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, any of your children aged under 18 that are named on the policy will be covered at no extra cost. And what’s more, your kids are also covered even if they go on holiday with another adult – a friend or relative for example. Please note exclusions will apply for pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Can I cancel my Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance?

Of course. World Nomads customers have up to 21 calendar days from when we issue your Certificate of Insurance and policy wording to cancel your Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy. This is referred to as your cooling-off period. If you do choose to cancel your policy within the cooling-off period, we will refund your premium, provided that:

    • you haven’t travelled under your policy; and
    • you are not making a claim; and
    • you are not exercising any other right under the policy.
If you cancel outside of the 21-day cooling-off period, no premium will be refunded. However, discretion may be exercised in exceptional circumstances to provide a refund for unused cover; those exceptional circumstances being bereavement or an unexpected change to your policy resulting in us being unable to continue to cover you. The unused premium will be calculated on a sliding scale basis

  • Is AMT cheaper than a single-trip policy?
An Annual Multi-Trip policy is not cheaper than a Single-Trip policy as a single item purchase. However, it can be far more cost-effective if you plan on taking two or more trips in a year. You’re free to roam without having to purchase an individual policy every time the wanderlust takes hold with Annual Multi-Trip. Just remember to purchase a policy that will cover you for the areas you intend to travel to.
  • Does AMT cover domestic travel?
Our Annual Multi-Trip policy offers cover if your country of residence is Ireland for both international and domestic travel.
  • Will my Annual Multi-Trip policy renew annually?
World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip policies are not currently set-up to auto-renew. We will contact you four weeks in advance of your policy ending to let you know that it is set to expire and give you ample time to purchase your next policy, to avoid any unintended break in your period of cover. Upon your policy’s expiration you will no longer be covered.
  • Is there a limit on the duration of each trip with AMT?
While there is no limit on the number of trips you can take each year with an Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, there is a cap on the total number of days you can be away throughout the year. Trips are limited to 31 days under our Standard plan and 45 days under our Explorer plan. If your planned trip is longer than an Annual Multi-Trip permits you might want to consider taking out a single trip policy instead.

Our Annual Multi-Trip policy offers cover if your country of residence is the United Kingdom for both international and domestic travel.

When planning a cycling adventure—whether it’s scenic touring, urban exploration on an e-bike, or challenging off-road terrain—investing in travel insurance for cycling may be just as important as tightening your helmet. With plans designed to match your ride, you’ll hit the road confident.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my cycling trip?

Even the best-laid cycling plans can face unexpected detours. A crash, sudden illness, or travel delays might throw off your itinerary, while stolen or damaged gear while traveling could cut your ride short. That’s where travel insurance for cycling could come in—it may help cover medical costs if you’re injured mid-ride, reimburse you for non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel for a covered reason, and assist if your essential biking equipment is stolen or damaged while traveling. Whether you’re pedaling out of state roads or venturing to far-flung trails, World Nomads helps keep your adventure on track with 24/7 non-insurance emergency assistance and coverage for more than 250 sports and activities.

What types of cycling adventures may be covered by World Nomads Travel Insurance?

World Nomads offers benefits for losses relating to:

  • On and off-road biking
  • BMX
  • Snow biking (yes, that’s a thing!)
  • Even unicycling can also be covered!

What travel insurance coverages and non-insurance services are offered by World Nomads for cyclists?

World Nomads Travel Insurance for US residents may cover a range of unexpected problems you could face on and off the road. Plans may include:

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
Broken bones or gashes from epic wipeouts

  2. Non-insurance Emergency Assistance

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
Reimbursement for broken or damaged bicycles

  4. Trip Cancellations
Reimbursement of pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations if you’re unexpectedly too sick to go on your cycling trip

NOMADS TIP: Consider the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ benefit for added flexibility and protection for shifting plans. Optional benefits come at an additional cost; CFAR not available in NY.

At World Nomads Travel Insurance, we know your cycling trip is more than just biking from one destination to the next. What may not covered by the travel protection plan I buy for my international cycling trip?

While we can offer coverage for many losses relating to biking, there are some things that may not be covered. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in any activity or sport as a professional athlete.
  • Bicycles and other sporting equipment that are damaged while in use due to wear and tear.
  • Search-and-rescue missions.
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • Cycling while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Top safety tips we recommend for your cycling trip

As cyclists ourselves, we have learned that it helps to be prepared. Before you hit the road with your bike, helmet and gear, check out a few of our safety tips for having the best cycling trip ever.

  • Check you have all your paperwork. Make sure you have all your appropriate documents before you leave. This can include things like proof of any required vaccinations, visitor permits if you plan to visit any national parks, and special tourist visas for the countries you’ll be visiting.
  • Be responsible when choosing a cycling destination or activity. Does the cycling tour suit your experience level? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination?
  • Wear a helmet and visible clothing. This should be a no-brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning because in many countries around the world, the locals don’t wear helmets when cycling. Another no-brainer is if you’re planning to ride at night, you should use lights and wear high visibility clothing to make sure other riders and vehicles see you.
  • Make sure your bike is set up correctly before you ride. Check the saddle, pedals, handlebars and tire pressure before you set forth on your journey.
  • Save your receipts. Hopefully you will have a perfect trip and won’t need to make a claim. But if you do have a mishap, make sure to save all supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases.
  • Get bike fit: Be sure you are physically capable of the cycling routes you are planning. Have you got a ‘fit for travel’ thumbs up from your doctor to take on the mountains and specific altitudes? Consider using our non-insurance telehealth service for pre-trip medical support to get travel medicines, like altitude sickness pills, delivered to your door before you leave on your trip.

NOMADS TIP: Using an e-bike for the first time? Give yourself plenty of practice time. These bikes are heavy and can take longer to brake than you are used to. Start off in a low assist mode and then gradually increase as you become more comfortable.

Whether you're rock climbing in Yosemite National Park or taking your adventure outside of the United States to epic spots like Italy’s Dolomite Mountains, it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected. If you’re planning a rock climbing trip, consider a travel protection plan that may help with issues like stolen climbing gear to unexpected medical expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my rock climbing trip?

Unexpected issues can mess up even the most carefully planned rock climbing trips. Falling rocks can cause injuries and bad weather can put a halt to your climbing. Travel insurance benefits designed for adventures paired with our non-insurance services designed for rock climbing trips may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a way to travel confidently. If you have a more adventurous climb planned in the Rocklands and you have travel insurance for Africa, you may be covered as well.

Travel insurance and non-insurance services for rock climbing: What may be covered?

Rock climbing can test your physical and mental abilities – and as adventurers ourselves, that’s part of what we love. Since unexpected situations can happen when climbing though, we’ve designed coverage for losses resulting from rock climbing while traveling. We also offer coverage for losses related to more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
For falls that happen when rock climbing

  2. 24/7 Non-insurance Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
Damaged or stolen climbing gear or luggage that is lost

  4. Trip Delays, Interruptions & Cancellations
A money-saver if inclement weather keeps you from climbing

Terms, conditions, and limitations apply to all mentioned coverages.

All plans include adventure travel insurance coverage for rock climbing, as well as several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your trip. These include delayed or lost baggage tracking and delivery, portable health records and pre-departure telehealth services.

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my rock climbing trip?

World Nomads offers four plans for US residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. Even when you’re going on a rock climbing trip, you may want to do other fun things too when you’re traveling, like hiking or camping. That’s totally fine, because you may be covered for more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences when you purchase a travel protection plan that includes extreme sports travel insurance coverage and non-insurance services.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan, but includes travel insurance coverage for incidents while rock climbing and bouldering indoors, outdoor rock climbing and ice climbing up to 9,842 feet/3,000 meters and scrambling up to 19,685 feet/6,000 meters. It also includes up to $125,000 in emergency medical expenses and up to $2,500 for trip cancellation.
  • Explorer Plan – This is for those who want to take their rock climbing adventures even higher. It covers via ferrata and outdoor rock climbing, mountaineering, scrambling and ice climbing up to 21,325 feet/ 6,500 meters. It also has higher limits of coverage for most benefits.
  • Epic Plan – This plan covers everything the Explorer Plan covers, but includes more activities and allows you to climb even higher. What may not be covered when rock climbing?

The US has some great places to climb, and you may be covered by your extreme sports travel insurance benefits inside the country too – but you may not be covered for rock climbing or traveling within 100 miles of your home. Some other things that may not be covered include:

  • Unattended baggage, climbing gear or personal items
  • Not following ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued by the US government prior to departure
  • Participation in activities not listed in our 250+ sports, activities and experiences.
  • Ignoring your doctor if they have advised in writing that you are not medically fit to travel
  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer Plan during the time-sensitive period and were medically able to travel at the time of purchase

Top safety tips we recommend for your rock climbing trip

  • If you’ve never climbed, take a lesson to learn proper climbing techniques.
  • Always wear a helmet. Accidents can happen on any level of terrain when climbing, and you always need to protect your head.
  • Double check your gear and equipment before climbing. Make sure your rope, harness and carabiners are properly fastened, and ensure your knots are secure.
  • Climb with a partner and develop good communication with them, including established hand signals. Make sure they are experienced and have the necessary skills to keep you safe.
  • Only climb in places that allow climbing. If you’re trespassing in an area where you shouldn’t be climbing, you may not be covered by your adventure travel insurance benefits included in your travel protection plan.
  • Don’t get in over your head. Be responsible when choosing a rock climbing destination and make sure it suits your experience level.
  • Take advantage of the pre-departure medical consultation included in your non-insurance services and see if there are any vaccinations or prescription medications (like altitude sickness pills) recommended for your destination. Depending on the medication, you may need to start it prior to your trip.
  • Check with the US Department of State to see if they have issued any travel advisories for your destination.
  • Enroll in the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Have a copy of the documents for your adventure travel insurance coverage saved in your phone. Save the phone number for the 24/7 Non-insurance Emergency Assistance team and have that easily accessible as well. Make sure you know the name of the climbing route and the nearest landmark so you can relay the appropriate information to the local authorities if you need help.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs on your Canadian adventure.

Cover for medical emergencies

Whether you’re planning on hiking in Banff National Park or seeing the Northern Lights in the Yukon, there’s so much to see and do in Canada that the last thing you want is to get sick or injured and worry about how you’re going to pay medical bills. Our overseas medical insurance offers cover for emergency medical treatment if you need:

Travel tip 1: know your own medical history and needs. For example, if you have existing medical condition(s) that may invalidate your cover. In some cases, you may need to have a doctor sign off that you’re fit to travel. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, contact us.

Coverage for Coronavirus

Both our Standard and Explorer policies offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Covid-19 whilst traveling around Canada.

Our Explorer plan also offers cover for some Coronavirus related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses, and some quarantine costs, as well as additional benefits for healthcare workers, residential care workers, and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave canceled by their employer due to Coronavirus.

Trip cancellation

All of our policies can offer coverage for you if you can’t travel because:

  • A doctor certifies that you’re medically unfit to travel,
  • You, your traveling companion, or a close relative is hospitalized or dies
  • Your transport is canceled or delayed because of severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, or strike.

Delayed baggage

What do you do if you’re arrived in Vancouver, but your bags haven’t? If your luggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, our policies cover essential purchases so you can rest easy while you wait for your bags to turn up.

Our policies also offer coverage if your bags and personal effects are lost, damaged, or stolen.

Travel tip 2: make copies of your essential travel documents and carry essentials such as toiletries, medications, and irreplaceable items in your carry-on luggage.

Our travel insurance policies offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports, and experiences from skiing in Whistler, to hiking in Jasper National Park, or mountain biking in Montreal. We can also cover some water-based activities, including kayaking and white-water rafting.

Keep in mind that some of these activities may require you to use specific safety gear or to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and other terms and conditions may apply. Be sure to read the exclusions section of your policy closely because some activities such as Mountaineering and professional sports are not covered.

If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing while on holiday is covered, please contact us before you organize your policy.

What to do if you can’t travel because someone at home is sick or injured

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

If a family member or close relative at home suddenly falls ill, it’s understandable you may not want to continue your travel plans.

Whether you’ve booked but not left yet or are halfway through your trip and need to fly home, here’s what to do when you have no option but to cancel your trip to be by the side of someone you care about.

1. Rearrange or Cancel Your Bookings

As soon as you know a close relative is ill and you are unable to travel or have no choice but to curtail your trip after you’ve left, you must try to rearrange any pre-booked or pre-paid accommodation, transport, or tours, or if necessary, cancel them.

2. Get It in Writing

The best way to support your claim is to provide satisfactory written evidence.

Written evidence needs to come from an independent third party and confirm all relevant information, such as the circumstances relating to cancellation, costs incurred, and that pre-paid expenses were non-refundable.

Required Documents Include:

  • Doctor’s report, written medical diagnosis, or medical certificate from the treating doctor confirming it is medically necessary to cancel or curtail or interrupt your trip.
  • Relevant medical records or reports, including information about pre-existing medical conditions.
  • A report from all relevant travel suppliers or carriers confirming the details around the cancellation, including compensation or offers made to you.
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

3. Keep Your Itineraries and Receipts

Be sure to keep all relevant itineraries, receipts, and booking and cancellation confirmations from your tour provider/s and carriers.

If you make a claim you must be able to show that the event was unforeseen, unexpected, and occurred after you booked or paid for your travel arrangements and purchased your travel insurance policy.

This is where keeping your itineraries and receipts comes in handy — and can help keep your claim hassle-free. They’ll be able to confirm your intended destinations, dates of purchase, booking and cancellation costs, etc.

4. What If Someone Gets COVID-19 and I Can’t Travel?

If a close relative in your Country of Residence is sick with, and hospitalized due to, COVID-19 and you have to cancel your trip, we may be able to help.

We offer Standard and Explorer Plans, each with different levels of cover. If you’ve purchased an Explorer plan we may be able to help with the costs of pre-paid travel arrangements if you have to return home to your Country of Residence if a close relative is hospitalized with COVID-19.

Like other illnesses, for a valid claim you must be able to provide satisfactory written evidence of diagnosis.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

It’s important to note coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

5. Need to Know More?

If you’re still unsure what to do if you need to cancel your trip because someone at home is sick, we’re here to help answer your questions. Check out our Help Centre that has FAQs on diverse topics that will answer any of your questions. If you are still unsure you can get in touch and we’ll help you work through things.

And in case of an emergency, our experienced Emergency Assistance Team is available to help you navigate any medical issue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How Do I Make A Claim on My Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything. All of the information we provide is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described. Coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states, or provinces. Please carefully read your Policy Wording for a full description of coverage.
