Travel Insurance for Airline Mishaps

Learn how travel insurance may help in the case of cancellation, delays, lost luggage and more.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

We’ve slept on the airport floor when flights were canceled, and we’ve been the ones waiting at the baggage carousel for the bag that never came. We get it – airline mishaps happen. Because of this, you may want to consider travel insurance for flight problems that could happen along your journey.

How can travel insurance protect my flights?

In many instances, your airline may help when unexpected situations arise. There’s some things they won’t cover though. Depending on your country of residence, travel insurance could help with a variety of unwelcome experiences you may encounter when flying.

Some of the key benefits on our policies include:

Flight cancellation

If bad weather has you grounded and your airline has stopped service to your destination, trip cancellation protection could help. You could be reimbursed for the non-refundable travel costs that you now can’t use. This could include things like hotel rooms or guided tours, if you paid for these in advance.

Flight delay

When you’re flying, you’re at the mercy of the airlines to depart when they say they will. If you’re delayed for an extended period of time, travel delay insurance may help reimburse you for the unexpected cost of additional meals and accommodations that you had to pay for as a result of the delay. If you prepaid for non-refundable excursions that you miss because of the delay, you may be reimbursed for those as well.

Luggage lost, damaged or delayed

So you’ve made it to your destination, but your bags didn’t. If a common carrier (like an airline) loses your bag, baggage insurance may help reimburse the cost to replace your belongings. If your baggage is delayed for a long time on your way to your destination, you may also be reimbursed for things like toiletries and a change of clothes until you are reunited with your bag.

In-Flight turbulence and other injuries

Nobody enjoys turbulence, but it’s unfortunately one of those things we have to deal with. While it can be a little nerve wracking, it’s usually nothing to worry about unless carry-ons move around and something falls on you, you get hurt while you’re up walking, or those unexpected bumps cause you to spill a hot drink and get burned. If you get injured on your flight, your airline may assist with medical care. If they don’t, emergency medical coverage could reimburse you for medical costs if you need medical care when you get to your destination.

Extended layovers

What happens if you purchased travel insurance for a certain time and then you’re stuck past that date due to an extended, unplanned layover?  If your airline is delayed in reaching its final destination, World Nomads may extend your coverage to the amount of time needed to make it to your destination. Contact us if this happens.

Can travel insurance protect my flights in any other way?

Depending on your country of residence, you could be covered for other flight mishaps, as well. Get a quote and read the policy documents. If you have questions, give us a call.

What are some things travel insurance would not cover when it comes to my flight?

If you check in for your flight and realize you’re stuck with the dreaded middle seat, we won’t cover the cost for your upgrade. Some other things travel insurance won’t cover include:

What else is covered by travel insurance?

Once you step outside the airport, you could still be covered for a variety of unexpected situations you may encounter on your trip.  In addition to air travel insurance benefits, World Nomads could help with several other unexpected circumstances you may encounter during your adventures.

Depending on your country of residence and the plan you have chosen, you could also be covered for things such as:

Activities: World Nomads offers adventure travel insurance for more than 150 activities. You  could be covered for activities like hiking, cycling, and kayaking. If you get hurt during your adventures, travel insurance may help with medical expenses and medical evacuation if you’re injured while participating in a covered activity. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

Trip interruption: Sometimes an incident may happen once you’re already on your trip and you are unable to continue as planned. Maybe you get hurt while rock climbing or a close family member back home gets sick and you have to cut your plans short. Trip interruption coverage could help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if your plans change for a covered reason.

Evacuation: If something happens and you need to get immediate medical care in a destination where there aren't nearby medical facilities, the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.

Tips for flying safely

  • Bring any medications onboard with you. Instead of packing any necessary medications in your checked bag, throw those in your carry on and take them with you. If the airline loses your bag or it is delayed, you won’t want to be without them.
  • Move and stretch your legs. Being confined in one position for too long without moving your legs can cause ankle swelling and blood clots. Prevent this by moving your feet and massaging your legs at your seat.
  • Stay hydrated. Yes, those bathrooms on a plane are cramped, but don’t try to avoid them by limiting your water consumption. Staying hydrated helps prevent things like headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. You’ll want to drink at least 8 ounces of water for each hour of your flight. Humidity in the cabin is usually low, and you may also want to consider a hydrating nasal spray, skin moisturizer, and eye drops.
  • Save your travel insurance information in your phone. Our hope is that you have a perfect trip, and you won’t need to make a claim. If you do though, you won’t want to be digging for information on how to make a claim. Save your policy information in your phone so it is easily accessible if you need it.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Travel insurance for participating in team sport

Headed overseas to play in a team sport? You should consider a World Nomads travel insurance policy. Our policies are designed to safeguard your trip, so all you have to worry about is focusing on your game.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Why consider travel insurance for team sports?

Whether you’re headed to the UK to play cricket, the USA for ultimate frisbee, or somewhere in between for an entirely different team sport, travel insurance can be just as valuable when you’re traveling to play sports as it can be for your annual overseas vacations.

No matter where you’re headed or which team sports you’re planning to participate in, you should consider travel insurance — because plans go awry and mishaps can happen.

World Nomads Travel Insurance offers coverage for a number of team sports and adventure activities. Let's break down what this means for you:

  1. Cover for bags and valuables: when you arrive to your destination ready to play but your gear doesn’t. Our baggage travel insurance may be able to help replace necessary items, clothing, and other personal belongings.

  2. Cover for medical evacuation: cover for when you become injured or unwell and can’t participate in the team sport and need to be evacuated to a medical facility, or in the worst case scenario, back to your home country. Emergency evacuation coverage isn’t just for adventure-seekers who need adventure travel insurance; it’s also helpful for those contact sports and other team activities you might want to participate in while overseas.

  3. Repatriation back home: If you're declared medically unfit to continue your travels or in the unfortunate event of your passing, cover is available for your repatriation back home. This is subject to the reasonable recommendation of a medical practitioner appointed by us, ensuring that transportation is medically necessary and appropriate.

  4. Cover for the whole family: when you plan to bring the whole family overseas with you. When you have to be overseas for an extended period to play sport, it helps to know that if your family comes with you, our travel insurance may help with cover for your loved ones.

Does World Nomads travel insurance offer cover for other team activities I might want to do on my trip?

Absolutely. World Nomads offers cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences under our Standard and Explorer plans, from solo pursuits to team activities, such as:

  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Fencing
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Tennis
  • Ultimate frisbee
  • Volleyball
  • Ice Hockey
  • Pickleball
  • And a heap more team sports.

Note: Not all team activities, sports, and experiences are covered under every travel insurance plan. Cover will depend on your Country of Residence and on the plan you have chosen. For example, some snow activities require a specific plan or upgrade to be selected when you purchase with World Nomads.

It’s always a good idea to read your policy wording carefully so you understand exactly what you’re covered for. And if you’re unsure, get in touch and we can help answer any questions you might have about travel insurance for team sports and other activities.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

Playing sport comes with its share of risk, but not all accidents or calamities happen on the field — or court, or ice-rink for that matter. Other times travel insurance may come in handy include:

  • A canceled trip: If you have no choice but to cancel your trip due to illness, injury, or any other unforeseen event covered under your policy, we may be able to help recoup the cost of things like your unused, non-refundable, pre paid accommodation, tours and flights.
  • A natural disaster: From tsunamis to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes to floods— natural disasters can take many forms. And there’s no shortage of ways they can spoil travel plans, closing airports, delaying flights, wiping out accommodation, and closing off entire towns. Check out our natural disaster coverage article to find out how travel insurance can help when nature goes rogue.
  • Cover for stolen baggage and gear: Whether you arrive to your destination, but your bags and sports gear don’t, your gear is damaged en-route, or you’re the victim of theft, we may be able to help. If your sports gear gets lost or stolen report it to your carrier or police ASAP, then get in touch with the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team who can help.
  • Overseas medical emergencies: Sports injuries are common. If you become injured while participating in team sports activities, we may be able to help with things like locating a doctor or hospital, medical bills, and medical evacuation. Depending on your Country of Residence, World Nomads also offers coronavirus cover for a range of coronavirus-related events.

What plans and options do you offer?

World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans: a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan, each one has their own benefits, limits, and sub-limits of coverage. Our Explorer Plan offers higher benefit limits and/or sub-limits.

You can compare our Standard and Explorer plans and prices through getting an instant online quote.

Note: both our travel insurance plans are different, and cover varies, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.

What are some things trip insurance does not cover?

Because travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything, there are certain things we may not cover, such as:

  • If you simply change your mind and decide not to go .
  • If you don’t adhere to the recommendations of the Emergency Assistance team. Failure to do so or refusing repatriation home may result in limitations to your cover.
  • Participation in a sport or activity that is not covered under your policy (check your policy wording carefully).
  • Loss or theft of your bags or gear when they’re left unattended.
  • If you’re participating in a sport or activity professionally.

This is not an exhaustive list. For the full details of what is and isn’t covered, read over your policy wording carefully.

What to do in case of an emergency

If you're involved in an accident, suffer a sudden illness, serious injury, or unfortunately, in the event of your passing overseas, contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible.

They're available 24/7 to provide guidance and support. The team will assist in arranging emergency medical transport, directing you to the nearest appropriate medical facility, or organizing your repatriation back home for medical reasons if and when required.

Please note that not reaching out to the Emergency Assistance team may result in limitations or reductions in your cover, and please be aware that waiting periods may apply, so don't hesitate to get in touch.

Tips for doing team sports safely

Regardless which team sport you’re partial to, safety should be your primary concern. You might find these tips helpful when planning your team sports holiday:

  • Know your health and fitness limits: You may have played soccer since you were in school, or been physically active in other ways since, but it’s important to always exercise within your own capabilities. Consider your fitness levels and plan your sports and other activities accordingly.
  • Safety gear: Always wear appropriate safety gear when participating in any sport or activity — because heading out on a cricket field without your cup, for example, is not going to end well.
  • Keep your sports gear and other bags and items with you: Leaving your things unattended makes them a prime target for light fingers and swift snatching. Don’t make things easier for thieves.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

Travel Insurance for Trip Interruption

The world is your oyster… until an unexpected event interrupts your trip.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

They say even the best laid plans have a way of veering off course. And, as all seasoned travelers know, trip interruptions are often what steers you in the wrong direction.

Sickness, injury, a family emergency, an active volcano, pesky pandemics… our Nomads have seen just about every type of trip interruption.

Don’t be caught off guard if your travel plans take an unexpected turn. Trip interruption insurance cover with World Nomads is designed to help get your holiday back on track.

What is trip interruption coverage?

Trip interruption coverage is there to help safeguard your travel plans if the unexpected puts a halt on your trip, leaving you unable to partake in your travel itinerary — or causes you to end your trip entirely.

What does trip interruption insurance cover?

Trip interruption insurance cover varies depending on your Country of Residence and the travel insurance policy you choose. With this in mind, you may have cover for:

  • Sickness and injury: if you or a member of your traveling party suffers sickness or injury while you’re traveling
  • Weather and natural disasters: check your Policy Wording in the Glossary section for a list of natural disasters that we cover
  • Work: if work suddenly becomes a priority while you’re away

What travel insurance plan should I consider?

World Nomads offer two types of travel insurance, Standard and Explorer. Which plan you choose is entirely up to you.

Our Standard Plan includes the fundamentals, like overseas emergency medical, lost, stolen or damaged bags and optional cover for high value items, pre-trip cancellation, and more.

Our Explorer Plan includes all these things plus a few more, which makes this option cost more.

What's the difference between trip cancellation, trip delay and trip interruption insurance?

The differences come down to what stage of your trip you’re at and how they impact your travel plans.

Cancellation cover is designed for when you have to unexpectedly cancel your trip.

Trip delay cover offers help if your travels don’t go according to schedule after your trip has begun, delaying your arrival to your destination.

Trip interruption cover is designed for when an event or circumstance prevents you from partaking in your full, planned itinerary, or means you have to end your trip early.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

A myriad of things! Travel insurance is designed to help in times when the unexpected or unforeseen happens. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you choose, World Nomads plans offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences
  • Emergency Overseas Medical Cover
  • Emergency Evacuation and repatriation when necessary
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage insurance
  • And more.

Want to extend your stay?

Travel is addictive, we get it. If you decide to extend your stay, you should consider extending your travel insurance too.

Conditions apply, so as soon as you decide to extend your stay get in touch and we’ll help answer any questions you have about how to extend your insurance policy so you remain covered for the duration of your trip.

What is not covered by trip interruption insurance?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Some of the things that may not be covered include:

  • If you decide to cancel your trip because it wasn’t what you thought it would be
  • Pre-existing medical conditions – see the Policy Wording for details.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the U.S. Department of State (see state.gov).
  • Unattended baggage or personal items, including any items left in a locked car overnight.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
  • Injury that’s as a result of, or happens while, under the influence of drugs or alcohol

It’s always a good idea to check the terms and conditions of your policy, so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

FAQs

What am I covered for if my trip is interrupted?

If you have no option but to interrupt or curtail your trip, you are covered for the value of your unused, non-refundable expenses (for which you paid for and have to forfeit). Cancelation expenses covered include: transportation; accommodation, tours and experiences; visas; tuition or course fees; travel agent fees. Check your Policy Wording for details and the limits for which you are covered.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. Travel Insurance for Safari Tours

Heading out to search for the Big 5? In addition to the perfect binoculars, you may also want to consider travel insurance for your next safari adventure.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Some people like to go wild when they are traveling, and some people like to go into the wild. If your version of wild involves searching for the Big 5 in the Serengeti or Maasai Mara, you’re our kind of person.

Just imagine-you’re bouncing around in your rugged 4x4 jeep as you trek through Kruger National Park in South Africa. Will today be the day you see a herd of elephants crossing the Sabie River or a lioness out on a hunt with her cub?

You’re then quickly shaken from your daydream by a loud thud on the hood of your jeep. You make eye contact with a leopard before he leaps off and runs into the bush. It’s a memory that you’ll be bragging about for years to come. However, in that moment, all the “what-ifs” also come to mind... should you have considered a travel insurance plan with adventure sports cover?

Should I consider adventure travel insurance for a safari?

There is such an allure of seeing wild animals in their natural habitat, but you have to remember - these majestic creatures can sometimes have erratic behavior. If you’re on a safari with an experienced guide, the chances of something happening are minimal. When you’re dealing with wildlife though, anything can happen.

You’ve surely heard about the rare incidents of people being ambushed by a hippo or trampled by an elephant. If you get injured, you’re going to need immediate medical care. Travel insurance could help reimburse you for expenses like x-rays, prescription medications, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs you may have if you get hurt on your safari.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

You may be going to Zambia on a mission to see zebras roaming freely at Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, but you may also decide to hike the Boiling Pot trail near Victoria Falls or go whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River while you are there.

World Nomads offers adventure travel insurance that covers more than 150 activities. When you get a quote, you can select your country of residence, and easily compare our Standard and Explorer plans side by side. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and for some countries of residence, it includes additional covered activities. Depending on your country of residence, you may need to add activities to your policy when you purchase it. Check out both plan options, because only you can decide the best travel insurance for your needs.

If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to emergency medical cover, international travel insurance could help with several other unexpected situations you may encounter on your safari. Depending on your country of residence, World Nomads may also offer cover for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline lost the bag that held your binoculars, baggage insurance may help reimburse the cost to replace them if your bag was lost by a common carrier.
  • Trip Interruption and Cancellation Insurance: If your travel buddy gets severe food poisoning from something he ate, it may put a screeching halt to your plans. If something unexpected happens and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.
  • Evacuation: If you’re going on a safari, there’s a good chance you may be in a remote destination where there aren't nearby medical facilities. If something happens and you need to get immediate medical care, the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.

What are some things trip insurance would not cover?

If you have too many glasses of South African wine at lunch and then try to sneak up to a sleeping lion to grab a selfie, you won’t be covered if that goes terribly wrong. Travel insurance won’t cover you if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol while you are on your safari. It’s also important that you follow the guidance of your safari guide at all times and view wild animals from a safe distance. Some other things that are not covered include:

  • Any pre-existing medical condition(s) as explained in the policy wording
  • Wandering from camp on your own, leaving your guide and common sense behind
  • Not following government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy

Tips for preparing for your safari adventure

One thing our team at World Nomads definitely recommends is making sure your camera stays fully charged at all times. You never know what you may see at any given moment. It’s also a really good idea to bring an extra camera battery along. Trust us on this one-you don’t want to miss the money shot!

It’s also important to stay safe on your safari adventure because you don’t want it to get cut short. Here are a few of our tips:

  • Do your research and book with an accredited tour operator.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions at all times and view wildlife from a safe distance.
  • Wear boots and socks when walking around in the bush.
  • Talk to your doctor to see if prescription antimalarial medication is recommended. Depending on the medication, you may need to start this prior to your trip.
  • Check with your country’s government health department to see if they have issued any health advisories for your destination.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask if the water is safe to drink when you are in remote locations.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. • Coverage may include injuries and medical evacuation if you're seriously hurt while on a safari, as well as protection for your luggage and gear.
  • Choose from two travel insurance plans: Standard or Explorer—tailored to your trip style and level of adventure.
  • World Nomads plans also cover 250+ other adventure activities, from scuba diving and snorkeling to zip-lining and jungle trekking.

Canadian travellers heading to Africa for a safari face unique insurance needs—from costly medical evacuations to lost camera gear. World Nomads offers travel insurance tailored for Canadians, with safari coverage included in every plan. Whether you're planning an African safari to see the Big 5 in the Serengeti or watch zebras roam in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, your adventure is sure to be unforgettable. But whenever you're overseas and surrounded by wildlife, you should be prepared for the unexpected.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my African safari?

From animal attacks to an unplanned case of malaria, unexpected issues can derail even the most carefully planned safari. Travel insurance for safaris may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to Canadian needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently – whether you're looking for rhinos in Nepal or photographing elephants in Kenya.

Nomads tip: Each policy includes a '10-Day Right to Examine' period, giving you time after purchase to review the details, making sure the coverage works for you. If you decide that you are not satisfied with the policy, you may cancel it within 10 days and you will be given a full refund of the premium you paid, provided you have not started your trip and you do not want to make a claim or to exercise any other right under the policy.

Choosing the Right Safari Travel Insurance Plan (Standard vs. Explorer)

World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan but includes safari travel insurance as well as up to $5,000,000 CAD in emergency medical expenses and up to $2,500 for trip cancellation for Canadian travellers.
  • Explorer Plan – This plan also covers safaris but has higher limits of coverage.

Even if your main goal is to go on a safari, you may want to do other fun things too, like bushwalking in Botswana or whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River. That’s totally fine, because there are over 250 other sports, activities and experiences that could be covered when you purchase travel insurance for Africa. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list safaris, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.  Costs may vary depending on the additional activities you list.

If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

NOMADS TIP: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

What may not be covered when on a safari?

Some things we may not cover include:

  • Unattended baggage or personal items
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy
  • Ignoring your doctor if they have explicitly advised you not to travel to a particular destination or go on a safari
  • Handling of big game or dangerous animals
  • Not following government ‘Do Not Travel’ advisories issued by the Canadian government

Top safety tips we recommend for your safari

  • Do your research and book with an accredited and eco-friendly tour operator
  • Make sure your guide has a first-aid kit. It doesn’t hurt to have a small one in your backpack too.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions at all times and view wildlife from a safe distance.
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Don’t be afraid to ask if the water is safe to drink when you are in remote locations.
  • Talk to your doctor to see if prescription antimalarial medication or other vaccinations are recommended. Depending on the medication, you may need to start it prior to your trip.
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants to help protect you from bug bites.
  • Don’t wear open toed shoes when walking around in the bush.
  • Check with the Public Health Agency of Canada to see if they have issued any travel health notices for your destination.
  • Register with Canadians Abroad to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Don’t try to handle big game or dangerous animals.
  • Don’t walk around alone at night.
  • Take along a copy of the documents showing proof of your safari travel insurance. You may even want to save a copy in your phone so it is easily accessible.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for safari. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Are safaris covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, safaris are covered under both plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance, but make sure you list this as an activity you’ll be participating in when you purchase your policy. Safaris are considered a Level 1 activity and they are automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list this as an activity when you purchase your safari travel insurance policy. However, you’ll need to pay an additional premium to be covered for any Level 2 and Level 3 activities like zip lining and hang gliding. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, we suggest you contact us to ask.

  • What types of incidents are covered while on a safari?

If your trip is cancelled, delayed, or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses (up to the policy limits), and this could include unused, pre-paid, non-refundable safari tours that you paid for in advance. If your safari jeep gets in a wreck and you require medical assistance, emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You could also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags or Canadian government travel advisories advising travellers not to travel to a destination on your itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can my kids travel on my Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy?
Absolutely! And the best part? When you purchase a World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, any of your children aged under 18 that are named on the policy will be covered at no extra cost. And what’s more, your kids are also covered even if they go on holiday with another adult – a friend or relative for example. Please note exclusions will apply for pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Can I cancel my Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance?

Of course. World Nomads customers have up to 21 calendar days from when we issue your Certificate of Insurance and policy wording to cancel your Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy. This is referred to as your cooling-off period. If you do choose to cancel your policy within the cooling-off period, we will refund your premium, provided that:

    • you haven’t travelled under your policy; and
    • you are not making a claim; and
    • you are not exercising any other right under the policy.
If you cancel outside of the 21-day cooling-off period, no premium will be refunded. However, discretion may be exercised in exceptional circumstances to provide a refund for unused cover; those exceptional circumstances being bereavement or an unexpected change to your policy resulting in us being unable to continue to cover you. The unused premium will be calculated on a sliding scale basis

  • Is AMT cheaper than a single-trip policy?
An Annual Multi-Trip policy is not cheaper than a Single-Trip policy as a single item purchase. However, it can be far more cost-effective if you plan on taking two or more trips in a year. You’re free to roam without having to purchase an individual policy every time the wanderlust takes hold with Annual Multi-Trip. Just remember to purchase a policy that will cover you for the areas you intend to travel to.
  • Does AMT cover domestic travel?
Our Annual Multi-Trip policy offers cover if your country of residence is Ireland for both international and domestic travel.
  • Will my Annual Multi-Trip policy renew annually?
World Nomads Annual Multi-Trip policies are not currently set-up to auto-renew. We will contact you four weeks in advance of your policy ending to let you know that it is set to expire and give you ample time to purchase your next policy, to avoid any unintended break in your period of cover. Upon your policy’s expiration you will no longer be covered.
  • Is there a limit on the duration of each trip with AMT?
While there is no limit on the number of trips you can take each year with an Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policy, there is a cap on the total number of days you can be away throughout the year. Trips are limited to 31 days under our Standard plan and 45 days under our Explorer plan. If your planned trip is longer than an Annual Multi-Trip permits you might want to consider taking out a single trip policy instead.
*The 15% discount applies to total premium and is available from 18 March 2026, 12:00AM GMT to 15 April 2026, 11:59PM IST. Discounts do not apply to the rate of VAT or other sales taxes as applicable in your country of residence, or charitable donations or any changes you make to the policy. A true claim story

    L. De Jesus,
    U.S. resident in Spain
Thanks guys for getting me home safely
    A.Brennan,
    Australian in Thailand
  • Just wanted to say thank you to this wonderful insurance company. When my husband notified the company that I had suffered a life threatening pulmonary embolism, World Nomads took care of everything. They contacted the hospital immediately and checked on my situation, A wonderful nurse called me everyday, speaking to doctors and making sure I understood what had happened and the course of my treatment. I would recommend World Nomads to every traveler. We are still travelling and until we return home will continue to insure with them.
    K.McMahon,
    Australian in Thailand
  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.
    T.Ryan,
    Canadian in Malaysia

Our Annual Multi-Trip policy offers cover if your country of residence is the United Kingdom for both international and domestic travel.

When planning a cycling adventure—whether it’s scenic touring, urban exploration on an e-bike, or challenging off-road terrain—investing in travel insurance for cycling may be just as important as tightening your helmet. With plans designed to match your ride, you’ll hit the road confident.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my cycling trip?

Even the best-laid cycling plans can face unexpected detours. A crash, sudden illness, or travel delays might throw off your itinerary, while stolen or damaged gear while traveling could cut your ride short. That’s where travel insurance for cycling could come in—it may help cover medical costs if you’re injured mid-ride, reimburse you for non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel for a covered reason, and assist if your essential biking equipment is stolen or damaged while traveling. Whether you’re pedaling out of state roads or venturing to far-flung trails, World Nomads helps keep your adventure on track with 24/7 non-insurance emergency assistance and coverage for more than 250 sports and activities.

What types of cycling adventures may be covered by World Nomads Travel Insurance?

World Nomads offers benefits for losses relating to:

  • On and off-road biking
  • BMX
  • Snow biking (yes, that’s a thing!)
  • Even unicycling can also be covered!

What travel insurance coverages and non-insurance services are offered by World Nomads for cyclists?

World Nomads Travel Insurance for US residents may cover a range of unexpected problems you could face on and off the road. Plans may include:

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
Broken bones or gashes from epic wipeouts

  2. Non-insurance Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
Reimbursement for broken or damaged bicycles

  4. Trip Cancellations
Reimbursement of pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations if you’re unexpectedly too sick to go on your cycling trip

NOMADS TIP: Consider the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ benefit for added flexibility and protection for shifting plans. Optional benefits come at an additional cost; CFAR not available in NY.

At World Nomads Travel Insurance, we know your cycling trip is more than just biking from one destination to the next. That’s why our plans include travel insurance and non-insurance services for cyclists and protection for over 250+ other adventure sports and experiences – from camping and rock climbing to zip-lining and snorkeling. Whether you’re flying downhill or taking a trail straight up a mountain, we offer four travel protection plans with different levels of insurance coverage to suit your trip style, budget, and adventure level. Check out our (lengthy) activity list and ensure you pick the plan that covers everything you plan to do.

*All coverage is subject to plan terms and conditions. Be sure you read and understand your plan documents. Any questions, just ask!

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my cycling trip?

What may not covered by the travel protection plan I buy for my international cycling trip?

While we can offer coverage for many losses relating to biking, there are some things that may not be covered. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in any activity or sport as a professional athlete.
  • Bicycles and other sporting equipment that are damaged while in use due to wear and tear.
  • Search-and-rescue missions.
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • Cycling while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Top safety tips we recommend for your cycling trip

As cyclists ourselves, we have learned that it helps to be prepared. Before you hit the road with your bike, helmet and gear, check out a few of our safety tips for having the best cycling trip ever.

  • Check you have all your paperwork. Make sure you have all your appropriate documents before you leave. This can include things like proof of any required vaccinations, visitor permits if you plan to visit any national parks, and special tourist visas for the countries you’ll be visiting.
  • Be responsible when choosing a cycling destination or activity. Does the cycling tour suit your experience level? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination?
  • Wear a helmet and visible clothing. This should be a no-brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning because in many countries around the world, the locals don’t wear helmets when cycling. Another no-brainer is if you’re planning to ride at night, you should use lights and wear high visibility clothing to make sure other riders and vehicles see you.
  • Make sure your bike is set up correctly before you ride. Check the saddle, pedals, handlebars and tire pressure before you set forth on your journey.
  • Save your receipts. Hopefully you will have a perfect trip and won’t need to make a claim. But if you do have a mishap, make sure to save all supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases.
  • Get bike fit: Be sure you are physically capable of the cycling routes you are planning. Have you got a ‘fit for travel’ thumbs up from your doctor to take on the mountains and specific altitudes? Consider using our non-insurance telehealth service for pre-trip medical support to get travel medicines, like altitude sickness pills, delivered to your door before you leave on your trip.

NOMADS TIP: Using an e-bike for the first time? Give yourself plenty of practice time. These bikes are heavy and can take longer to brake than you are used to. Start off in a low assist mode and then gradually increase as you become more comfortable.
