Illness and injury are never fun, especially when they interfere with your travel plans.
If you have no option but to cancel your trip because you’ve fallen ill or become injured in some way, we’re here to help. Because the only thing worse than missing out on your trip is footing the bill when the unforeseen happens.
Here’s what to do in the event you need to cancel:
If you’ve had an accident, you must notify our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible so that we can confirm your cover and manage any potential claim for you.
You can contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team on +353 21 237 8009 or +353 21 237 8003.
The team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and can offer the following assistance:
As soon as you know you’re unable to travel you must try to rearrange, or if necessary, cancel your bookings as soon as possible. This means contacting any tour operator or carrier where you’ve pre-booked travel arrangements, such as accommodation, transport, or tour providers.
Written documents are the best way to support your claim. They need to come from an independent third party and provide evidence pertaining to the illness or injury that is preventing you from traveling or continuing your travels, and any relevant confirmation relating to cancellations made with your travel providers, such as the costs incurred, whether the pre-paid expenses were deemed non-refundable, or if refundable, what refunds were provided.
Required documents include:
If you need to cancel your travel plans due to illness or injury, you’ll need to provide relevant receipts, itineraries, and bookings and cancellation information (including any refunds received).
Your receipts are pertinent to your claim, and they can help keep things hassle-free so you can focus on getting better.
If you or a member of your traveling party are diagnosed with coronavirus and you have no option but to cancel your trip, or if your travel plans are impacted after being diagnosed with coronavirus during your trip, we may be able to help.
We offer Standard and Explorer Plans, each with different levels of cover. It’s important to note that cover is only available for Coronavirus travel costs if you’ve purchased an Explorer Plan. And we don’t provide cover for any expenses you incur after you return home to your Country of Residence.
Like other illnesses, for a valid claim you must be able to provide satisfactory written evidence of diagnosis as well as all the other details outlined above.
To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions, and exclusions.
If you’re still unsure what to do if you need to cancel your trip because you or someone in your travel party is ill or injured, we’re here to help answer your questions. Check out our Help Centre that has FAQs on diverse topics that will answer any of your questions. If you are still unsure you can get in touch and we’ll help you navigate the process.
And in case of a medical emergency, our experienced Emergency Assistance Team is available to help 24 hours a day 7 days week.

Whether you are into fantasy, renaissance, steampunk, or horror, the excitement of participating in live action role play (LARP) can be electrifying. You’re able to step away from the mundane reality and responsibilities of life and immerse yourself in the adventurous fun of a fictional setting.
Most game masters take steps to try to keep the environment safe, but some things can’t be avoided. If you are attacked by a crunchy, step back too far when blocking, and trip over a tree root, that fall will bring you back to reality quickly. If you have plans to participate in a LARP event on your next trip, you may want to consider a World Nomads travel insurance* plan with adventure sports coverage.
Trip and falls are some of the most common injuries that happen while LARPing. When you’re engrossed in the moment, you can become so consumed in your actions that you don’t pay attention to the terrain around you. Uneven ground and a twisted ankle can be scarier than the horde of monsters coming towards you. Getting hit in the eye with a spell packet is not any fun either. If you get hurt, your health insurance may not always cover you when you are traveling to destinations outside of your network or plan. However, a travel insurance plan from World Nomads may be able to assist by helping to reimburse expenses for things like x-rays, prescription medications, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs if you get hurt while LARPing.
Are you planning to explore even more sports and adventures during your travels? World Nomads offers adventure travel insurance that covers more than 250 activities for US residents, and you can also have coverage for activities like backpacking, karate, and paint balling.
We offer four plans – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans, which offer coverage up to 180 days per single trip. And if you plan to take numerous trips during the year, the Annual Travel Insurance Plan could be best for you; it has a maximum trip length of 45 days.
World Nomads covers international and domestic trips, when traveling at least 100 miles from home. In addition to emergency medical expense coverage, travel insurance may help with several other unexpected emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip. For US residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:
If you arrive at your event and aren’t vibing with the plot of your LARP, your adventure travel insurance would not cover the cancellation of your trip. Some other things that are not covered include:

We’ve learned that every LARP is different, and we encourage you to make sure an event fits your comfort level before participating. Find out ahead of time what type of story you are joining in, and the combat the event allows. Never make assumptions about safety and always ask questions related to the equipment and actions that are classified as safe.

Contact the teamLearn how trip interruption cover can help if your plans get unexpectedly sidetracked.
As featured in:
As travellers ourselves, we have experienced some of the cool surprises you can encounter on your adventures. For example, trekking through Iceland, you may get to see nature’s best light show if you are lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights.
Not all unforeseen surprises are as dazzling though. Sickness or injuries to yourself or an immediate family member are just a couple of the unanticipated things that can abruptly put a halt to your fun. Because you can never predict an interruption in your travels, you may want to consider travel insurance.
A trip interruption is something that happens that causes you to end your trip early or makes you unable to participate in your full planned itinerary that occurs after trip start date. If you get severely injured or sick while you are travelling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip.
World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage as a part of our adventure travel insurance policies, and it may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if your plans change for a covered reason.
For example, if you paid in advance for flights and hotels, but you broke your leg and can’t continue your trip, you may get reimbursed for your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs if you can’t recover those costs from the travel supplier.
Sometimes you may deal with an interruption that causes you to miss part of your trip, but you are able to rejoin it before it is over. If that happens, you may be eligible for reimbursement of the extra economy class transportation costs, via the most cost-effective itinerary to your next destination in order to catch-up with your trip.
If you get hurt and have to go home early, you could also be covered for transportation costs to return you to your home province. However, these transportation expenses would not be covered if, prior to your policy effective date, you did not purchase a return air ticket to return to your home province as part of your trip.
Canadian residents may be covered for reasons such as:
Only you can decide what plan is best for you. World Nomads offers two options - the Standard and Explorer plan. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage.
When you get a quote, you can compare each plan side by side to see what each covers. Maximum benefits can be found in the Schedule of Benefits in your policy wording, and are subject to any applicable sub-limits. If you have any questions, please reach out; we are happy to help.
Trip Cancellation coverage is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip. Coverage starts on or after your policy effective date and ends on your departure or start date.
Trip Delay coverage may help when your arrival at a trip destination is delayed. Coverage starts on your departure or start date and ends return date.
Trip Interruption coverage is when something happens in the middle of the trip and you’re unable to continue on as planned. Coverage starts on your departure or start date and ends return date.
In addition to trip interruption, a World Nomads travel insurance policy may help with several other unexpected and unforeseen emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip.
For Canadian residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:
If you set forth on your journey and just aren’t feeling the vibe of the destination or your travel partner, trip interruption won’t cover any costs involved with ending your trip early. Some other things that may not be covered include:

One of the joys of travel is the surprise element. How about hiking through Iceland and being dazzled by the Northern Lights? Unfortunately, not all unforeseen surprises are as welcome. Sickness, injuries, or family emergencies are just a few of the unanticipated things that can abruptly halt your fun. Because you can never predict an interruption in your travels, you may want to consider travel insurance*.
‘Trip interruption’ is something that happens causing you to end your trip early or that makes you unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. If you get severely injured or sick while traveling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip.
World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage as a part of our travel insurance plans, and it may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements if your plans change for a covered reason. It may also help you get home, quickly.
For example, if you paid in advance for flights and hotels, but you broke your leg and can’t continue your trip, you may get reimbursed if you can’t recover those costs elsewhere.
Sometimes you may deal with an interruption that causes you to miss part of your trip, but you are able to rejoin it later. For example, if you need to stay back in a city on your trip to care for a sick traveling companion, but then you are able meet your group later on. Your additional transportation costs could be covered to rejoin your trip. If you need to return home early for a covered reason, you may also be eligible to be reimbursed for additional transportation costs.
The Trip Interruption benefit has many covered reasons including sickness, injury or death of yourself, a travel companion or a covered family member. Please view your state specific Plan Document as coverage varies based on the plan you purchase.
US residents may have coverage for reasons such as:
Only you can decide what plan is best for you. Maximum benefits can be found in the Schedule of Benefits in your policy wording and are subject to any applicable sub-limits. Trip Cancellation coverage is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip.
Trip Delay coverage may help provide reimbursement for reasonable expenses you incur if you’re delayed for more than six hours due to a covered reason, like a documented airline delay, lost or stolen passport and more.
Trip Interruption coverage begins after you depart on your first scheduled travel arrangement, like a flight.
Our Single trip and annual travel plans all include trip interruption coverage. Our Epic and Explorer plans offer optional “cancel for any reason” benefits beyond what’s included in all plans, at an additional cost and only when you purchase within the time sensitive period. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side-by-side and determine which one might be right for you.
If you set out on your journey and just aren’t feeling the vibe of the destination or your travel partner, trip interruption won’t cover any costs involved with ending your trip early. Some other things that may not be covered include:

Contact the teamIf you’re incorporating pickleball into your travel plans, learn how travel insurance can help in case the unexpected strikes.
As featured in:
Millions of people have fallen in love with the unique combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong known as pickleball.
As one of the fastest growing sports in the world, more hotels are building pickleball courts to give experienced and new picklers a chance to get in on the action while they are travelling.
While serious injuries are rare in pickleball, even the best of us have lost our balance and taken a tumble when going for an overhead slam.
If pickleball is on your list of activities for your next trip, you may want to consider a World Nomads travel insurance plan with adventure sports coverage, that offers coverage to protect you both on and off the court, when you are travelling.
Falls are one of the most common pickleball related injuries. You can be proactive and take steps ahead of time to work on your balance, but as you are twisting, turning, and moving across the court, there’s always a possibility of accidents.
A travel insurance plan from World Nomads could assist with things like x-rays, medication, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs you may have if you suffer an emergency medical condition and get hurt playing pickleball.
You will still need to have GHIP coverage in your home province while you are on your trip though. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is limited to CAD $40,000.
Planning to explore even more sports and adventures during your travels? World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents.
When you get a quote, you can check out our Standard and Explorer plans to compare coverage side by side.
You will need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip at the time you purchase your policy. You won’t be able to add activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.
Level 1 activities like bungee jumping, hot air ballooning, and roller skating are automatically covered (and will still need to be listed when you purchase your policy). However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like snowboarding, rappelling, or hang gliding.
If you are participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, you will need to contact us to make sure you are covered.
In addition to emergency medical coverage, travel insurance may help with several other unexpected and unforeseen emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip.
For Canadian residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:

As featured in:
It’s one thing if a rainy day washes out your trekking expedition, but what if a hurricane blows the roof off your home before you leave for your trip? When a natural disaster strikes, it’s hard to classify your trip as anything but… a disaster. But World Nomads can offer some much-needed weatherproofing, with protection for trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and more.
A natural disaster is a natural event caused by weather or climate that causes destruction or loss, such as an earthquake, widespread flooding, wildfire, hurricane, blizzard or volcanic eruption. It could also mean any weather that causes severe and widespread damage, triggering a travel advisory from the Canadian Government or a ‘natural disaster’ declaration at your trip destination.

If you’re traveling to a region that’s known for natural disasters, it's a good idea to do some research to see if there have been any warnings. If you buy a policy after an event is known, and the natural disaster impacts your trip, you won’t be covered for any expenses.
World Nomads travel insurance is designed to help you come unstuck in sticky situations, like when you show up, but your bags don’t. Fill out the quick quote form below and get an instant quote today.
One night, I was on the surf charter boat, in the Mentawai Islands, Sumatra, Indonesia. There was an earthquake and tsunami that hit and completely destroyed the boat. The boat caught fire. The fire spread rapidly and we had to abandon ship. The boat along with all personal belongs were completely destroyed. The fire spread so quickly that there was no time to collect any belongings. The only things I ended up with were the shorts I was wearing, my watch and wedding ring. Almost all my possessions and documentation were on the boat and destroyed.

Millions of people have fallen in love with the unique combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong known as pickleball.
As one of the fastest growing sports in the world, more resorts are building pickleball courts to give experienced and new picklers a chance to get in on the action while they are traveling.
While serious injuries are rare in pickleball, even the best of us have lost our balance and taken a tumble when going for an overhead slam.
If pickleball is on your list of activities for your next trip, you may want to consider a travel insurance* plan with adventure sports coverage, as that could help protect you on and off the court when traveling.
Falls are one of the most common pickleball related injuries. You can be proactive and take steps ahead of time to work on your balance, but as you are twisting, turning, and moving across the court, there’s always a possibility of accidents.
If you get hurt, your health insurance may not always cover you when you are traveling to other destinations. However, a travel insurance plan from World Nomads may be able to assist by helping to reimburse expenses like x-rays, medication, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs.
You may want to explore even more sports and adventures during your travels. World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for U.S. residents, and you can also have coverage for activities like boating, aerobics, and zip lining.
If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each plan includes.
Travel insurance is designed to cover losses arising from sudden, unexpected, and unforeseeable circumstances. For US residents, World Nomads may offer coverage for:

From our own time on the court, we’ve learned that many injuries can often be avoided. Here are a few tips we have learned from our own experiences as picklers.
