Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs on your Canadian adventure.

Cover for medical emergencies

Whether you’re planning on hiking in Banff National Park or seeing the Northern Lights in the Yukon, there’s so much to see and do in Canada that the last thing you want is to get sick or injured and worry about how you’re going to pay medical bills. Our overseas medical insurance offers cover for emergency medical treatment if you need:

Travel tip 1: know your own medical history and needs. For example, if you have existing medical condition(s) that may invalidate your cover. In some cases, you may need to have a doctor sign off that you’re fit to travel. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, contact us.

24/7 emergency assistance

The Emergency Assistance team is available 24/7 and can help you in a medical emergency. The EA team can also arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to medical facilities, and give support to you and your family.

Coverage for Coronavirus

Both our Standard and Explorer policies offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Covid-19 whilst traveling around Canada.

Our Explorer plan also offers cover for some Coronavirus related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses, and some quarantine costs, as well as additional benefits for healthcare workers, residential care workers, and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave canceled by their employer due to Coronavirus.

Trip cancellation

If your travel plans change unexpectedly and some or all of your trip is canceled, our policies offer coverage (up to benefit limits) for some non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.

All of our policies can offer coverage for you if you can’t travel because:

  • A doctor certifies that you’re medically unfit to travel,
  • You, your traveling companion, or a close relative is hospitalized or dies
  • Your transport is canceled or delayed because of severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, or strike.

Delayed baggage

What do you do if you’re arrived in Vancouver, but your bags haven’t? If your luggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, our policies cover essential purchases so you can rest easy while you wait for your bags to turn up.

Our policies also offer coverage if your bags and personal effects are lost, damaged, or stolen.

Travel tip 2: make copies of your essential travel documents and carry essentials such as toiletries, medications, and irreplaceable items in your carry-on luggage.

Cover for adventure activities and sports

If you’re into the outdoors, Canada is the place to go! Our travel insurance policies offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports, and experiences from skiing in Whistler, to hiking in Jasper National Park, or mountain biking in Montreal. We can also cover some water-based activities, including kayaking and white-water rafting.

Keep in mind that some of these activities may require you to use specific safety gear or to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and other terms and conditions may apply. Be sure to read the exclusions section of your policy closely because some activities such as Mountaineering and professional sports are not covered.

If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing while on holiday is covered, please contact us before you organize your policy.

Travel tip 3: Canada experiences diverse climates. Pack layers, waterproof gear, and check weather forecasts before heading out for your adventures.

What to do if you can’t travel because someone at home is sick or injured

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

If a family member or close relative at home suddenly falls ill, it’s understandable you may not want to continue your travel plans.

Whether you’ve booked but not left yet or are halfway through your trip and need to fly home, here’s what to do when you have no option but to cancel your trip to be by the side of someone you care about.

1. Rearrange or Cancel Your Bookings

As soon as you know a close relative is ill and you are unable to travel or have no choice but to curtail your trip after you’ve left, you must try to rearrange any pre-booked or pre-paid accommodation, transport, or tours, or if necessary, cancel them.

2. Get It in Writing

The best way to support your claim is to provide satisfactory written evidence.

Written evidence needs to come from an independent third party and confirm all relevant information, such as the circumstances relating to cancellation, costs incurred, and that pre-paid expenses were non-refundable.

Required Documents Include:

  • Doctor’s report, written medical diagnosis, or medical certificate from the treating doctor confirming it is medically necessary to cancel or curtail or interrupt your trip.
  • Relevant medical records or reports, including information about pre-existing medical conditions.
  • A report from all relevant travel suppliers or carriers confirming the details around the cancellation, including compensation or offers made to you.
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

3. Keep Your Itineraries and Receipts

Be sure to keep all relevant itineraries, receipts, and booking and cancellation confirmations from your tour provider/s and carriers.

If you make a claim you must be able to show that the event was unforeseen, unexpected, and occurred after you booked or paid for your travel arrangements and purchased your travel insurance policy.

This is where keeping your itineraries and receipts comes in handy — and can help keep your claim hassle-free. They’ll be able to confirm your intended destinations, dates of purchase, booking and cancellation costs, etc.

4. What If Someone Gets COVID-19 and I Can’t Travel?

If a close relative in your Country of Residence is sick with, and hospitalized due to, COVID-19 and you have to cancel your trip, we may be able to help.

We offer Standard and Explorer Plans, each with different levels of cover. If you’ve purchased an Explorer plan we may be able to help with the costs of pre-paid travel arrangements if you have to return home to your Country of Residence if a close relative is hospitalized with COVID-19.

Like other illnesses, for a valid claim you must be able to provide satisfactory written evidence of diagnosis.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

It’s important to note coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

5. Need to Know More?

If you’re still unsure what to do if you need to cancel your trip because someone at home is sick, we’re here to help answer your questions. Check out our Help Centre that has FAQs on diverse topics that will answer any of your questions. If you are still unsure you can get in touch and we’ll help you work through things.

And in case of an emergency, our experienced Emergency Assistance Team is available to help you navigate any medical issue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Here’s what to do in the event you need to cancel:

1. Contact us as soon as possible

If you’ve had an accident, you must notify our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible so that we can confirm your cover and manage any potential claim for you.

You can contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team on +353 21 237 8009 or +353 21 237 8003.

  • Arranging medical transport.
  • Setting up direct payments to medical facilities.
  • Giving support to you and your family.

2. Rearrange or cancel your bookings straight away

As soon as you know you’re unable to travel you must try to rearrange, or if necessary, cancel your bookings as soon as possible. This means contacting any tour operator or carrier where you’ve pre-booked travel arrangements, such as accommodation, transport, or tour providers.

3. Provide all written documents

Written documents are the best way to support your claim. They need to come from an independent third party and provide evidence pertaining to the illness or injury that is preventing you from traveling or continuing your travels, and any relevant confirmation relating to cancellations made with your travel providers, such as the costs incurred, whether the pre-paid expenses were deemed non-refundable, or if refundable, what refunds were provided.

Required documents include:

  • Doctor’s report, written medical diagnosis, or medical certificate from the treating doctor confirming it is medically necessary to cancel, curtail or interrupt your trip.
  • Relevant medical records or reports regarding your illness or injury, including information about pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Ambulance report if one was required.
  • Police report if they were involved.
  • Hospital admission report if the person was admitted to the hospital.
  • A report from all relevant travel supplier or carrier confirming the details around the cancellation, including refund or offers made to you.
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

4. Don’t forget your receipts

If you need to cancel your travel plans due to illness or injury, you’ll need to provide relevant receipts, itineraries, and bookings and cancellation information (including any refunds received).

Your receipts are pertinent to your claim, and they can help keep things hassle-free so you can focus on getting better.

5. Am I covered if I cancel my trip due to COVID-19?

If you or a member of your traveling party are diagnosed with coronavirus and you have no option but to cancel your trip, or if your travel plans are impacted after being diagnosed with coronavirus during your trip, we may be able to help.

We offer Standard and Explorer Plans, each with different levels of cover. It’s important to note that cover is only available for Coronavirus travel costs if you’ve purchased an Explorer Plan. And we don’t provide cover for any expenses you incur after you return home to your Country of Residence.

Like other illnesses, for a valid claim you must be able to provide satisfactory written evidence of diagnosis as well as all the other details outlined above.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions, and exclusions.

6. Need to know more?

If you’re still unsure what to do if you need to cancel your trip because you or someone in your travel party is ill or injured, we’re here to help answer your questions. Check out our Help Centre that has FAQs on diverse topics that will answer any of your questions. If you are still unsure you can get in touch and we’ll help you navigate the process.

Live Action Role Playing (LARP) Travel Insurance Coverage

Learn how your LARP adventure can be covered by travel insurance plans

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance:

  • All World Nomads plans cover live action role playing trips, with some plans that offer higher limits of coverage.
  • Emergency Medical Coverage may assist with medical costs and transport if you're seriously hurt while LARPing.
  • Our travel protection plans include transportation if your condition is severe, acute, or life-threatening and adequate treatment is not available in your immediate area. Additional terms apply.
  • Gear and baggage protection helps cover lost, stolen, or damaged LARPing gear and luggage.
  • An optional Cancel for Any Reason upgrade is available on some plans (additional cost and state restrictions may apply.)

Whether you’re into fantasy, renaissance, steampunk, or horror, live-action role-playing lets you step out of reality and immerse yourself in a fictional world. These adventures can even take you to exciting destinations beyond the U.S.—but wherever you go, it’s wise to be prepared for the unexpected. If you’re planning a trip, you may want to protect yourself with a travel protection plan that includes a range of travel insurance benefits and non-insurance services for live action role playing trips that may help with everything from stolen LARP gear to unexpected medical expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my LARP trip?

Most game masters take steps to try to keep the environment safe, but unexpected issues can mess up even the most carefully planned LARP trips. If you lose your footing and trip, that fall to the ground will bring you back to reality quickly. Adventure travel insurance and non-insurance services designed for LARP adventures may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a way to travel confidently when you’re LARPing away from home.

Travel insurance and non-insurance services for LARP: What may be covered?

When you’re live action role playing and engrossed in the moment as a character, you can become so consumed in your actions that you don’t pay attention to the terrain around you. Uneven ground and a twisted ankle can be scarier than a horde of monsters coming your way. Since unexpected situations can happen when LARPing, we’ve designed coverage for losses resulting from live action role playing while traveling. We also offer coverage for losses related to more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
For falls that happen when LARPing

  2. 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation

  3. Baggage & Gear Coverage
Damaged or stolen LARP gear or luggage that is lost

  4. Trip Delays, Interruptions & Cancellations
A money-saver if inclement weather keeps you from participating in a LARP

Get a quote and compare the plans to see which level of coverage is right for you.

Terms, conditions, and limitations apply to all mentioned coverages.

All plans include adventure travel insurance coverage for LARP trips, as well as several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your trip. These include delayed or lost baggage tracking and delivery, portable health records and pre-departure telehealth services.

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my live action role playing trip?

World Nomads offers four plans for U.S. residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. Even when you’re going on a LARP trip, you may want to do other fun things too, like hiking or camping. That’s totally fine, because you may be covered for more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences when you purchase a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage and non-insurance services for your LARP adventure.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan, but includes travel insurance coverage for incidents while LARPing. It includes up to $125,000 in emergency medical expenses and up to $2,500 for trip cancellation.
  • Explorer Plan – This also covers live action role playing, but also covers other activities such as skydiving and triathlons. It also has higher limits of coverage for most benefits.
  • Epic Plan – This covers everything the Explorer plan covers, plus even more activities – including cliff diving and free soloing. It also has the highest benefit limits of coverage.
  • Annual Plan – If you’re planning multiple trips throughout the year, this plan may be for you. Just buy once and stay protected all year. It includes travel insurance coverage for LARP trips, as well as all of the other activities covered in the Standard Plan.

NOMADS TIP: For even more trip cancellation flexibility, check out the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ benefit. It can be added to Explorer and Epic plans. Available at an additional cost for U.S. residents, except in New York.

What may not be covered when on a LARPing trip?

If you arrive at your event, and aren’t vibing with your plot, your live action role playing travel insurance coverage won’t cover you if you want to cut your trip short and go home. Some other things that aren’t covered include:

  • Unattended baggage, LARP gear or personal items
  • Traveling or LARPing within 100 miles of your home
  • Not following ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued by the US government prior to departure
  • Damage that happens to your LARP equipment while you are using it.
  • Injuries that happen if you are LARPing under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Top safety tips we recommend for LARPing safely

Every LARP is different, and we encourage you to make sure an event fits your comfort level before participating. Find out ahead of time what type of story you are joining in, and the combat the event allows. Never make assumptions about safety and always ask questions related to the equipment and actions that are classified as safe. You may also want to save a copy of your plan documents in your phone and have the phone number for the 24/7 Non-insurance Emergency Assistance team easily accessible as well – just in case.

Here are a few other tips we have found to help keep you safe while LARPing:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Know the safe words beforehand.
  • Read all of the rules.
  • Listen to the game master and marshal.
  • Don’t drink and LARP.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Get rest the day before.
  • Take breaks when you need to.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for LARPing. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • What should I do if I get hurt while LARPing?

If you get hurt while live action role playing, contact local authorities as soon as you’re able to do so for immediate attention. World Nomads Travel Insurance may help cover the cost of medical treatment, hospital stays, or even emergency medical evacuation if needed (subject to approval.) Access to a 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance team is also included for support anytime, anywhere when you purchase a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage for LARP trips.

  • Do I get my money back if I cancel a trip?

Trip cancellation coverage is offered by all plans offered by World Nomads, and you may be reimbursed for pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason. U.S. residents (except those that live in New York) also have the ability to add additional cancel for any reason coverage when certain World Nomads plans are purchased.

  • What happens if my bags are delayed?

When you purchase travel insurance coverage for LARP trips, baggage coverage is also included. If your checked-in bags are delayed more than 12 consecutive hours on the way to your destination, your plan may reimburse you for reasonable essential items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited. Your coverage also includes non-insurance service that can help track down your bag and get it delivered to you.

  • Our plans include emergency medical evacuation coverage if you get injured while LARPing in remote areas.
  • We provide gear protection if your LARP equipment is stolen or accidentally damaged by the common carrier during your trip.

Whether you're into renaissance, steampunk, or another type of live action role playing, LARPing can allow you to step away from real life and temporarily live life in a fictional setting. LARPing can take you to some exciting places outside of Canada, but it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected. If you’re planning a trip, you may want to protect your adventure with World Nomads Travel Insurance for live action role playing. Our travel insurance plans include a range of benefits that could help with everything from stolen LARP gear to unexpected emergency medical expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance for my LARP trip?

Most game masters take steps to try to keep the environment safe, but unexpected issues can mess up even the most carefully planned LARP trips. If you lose your footing and trip, that fall to the ground will bring you back to reality quickly. Travel insurance for your LARPing adventure may help you bounce back quickly with support for medical and travel emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a smart way to travel confidently when you’re live action role playing outside of your home province.

Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Plan is limited once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels outside of your home province too.

Travel insurance for LARPing: What may be covered?

When you’re live action role playing and engrossed in the moment as a character, you can become so consumed in your actions that you don’t pay attention to the terrain around you. Uneven ground and a twisted ankle can be scarier than a horde of monsters coming your way. Since unexpected situations can happen when live action role playing, we’ve designed our plans to include travel insurance for LARPing. We also offer coverage for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences.

  1. Emergency Medical Expenses
If you get injured when LARPing and require emergency medical treatment

  2. 24/7 Emergency Assistance
Available 24/7 to assist in an emergency situation

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my LARP trip?

World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan and includes up to $5,000,000 CAD in emergency medical expenses and $2,500 CAD for trip cancellation.
  • Explorer Plan – This adventure travel insurance plan also covers live action role playing but has higher limits of coverage.

Even if your main goal is to LARP, you may also be participating in other activities like archery or camping. That’s totally fine, because there are over 250+ sports, activities and experiences that could be covered when you purchase travel insurance for LARP. When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list live action role playing, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.  Costs may vary depending on the additional activities you list.

If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

Nomads tip: Get a quote and choose your plan first, then the system will prompt you to add the activities you plan to do. Make sure you list them all; you won’t be able to make changes once on your trip.

What may not be covered when on a live action role play trip?

If you arrive at your event, and aren’t vibing with your plot, your travel insurance for your LARPing adventure won’t cover you if you want to cut your trip short and go home. Some other things that aren’t covered include:

  • Unattended baggage, LARP gear, or personal items
  • Damage that happens to your LARP equipment while you’re using it
  • Not following government ‘Do Not Travel’ advisories issued by the Canadian government
  • Travelling or LARPing in your home province
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy

Top safety tips we recommend for your LARP trip

Every LARP is different, and we encourage you to make sure an event fits your comfort level before participating. Find out ahead of time what type of story you are joining in, and the combat the event allows. Never make assumptions about safety and always ask questions related to the equipment and actions that are classified as safe. You may also want to save a copy of your travel insurance documents for your LARPing trip in your phone and have the phone number for the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team easily accessible as well – just in case.

Here are a few other tips we have found to help keep you safe while LARPing:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Know the safe words beforehand.
  • Listen to the game master and marshal.
  • Don’t drink and LARP.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Perform a weapons check.
  • Get rest the day before.
  • Take breaks when you need to.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for Live Action Role Playing. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Is live action role playing covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, LARPing is covered under both plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance. Live action role playing is considered a Level 1 activity and is automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list this as an activity when you purchase your travel insurance for LARP to be covered under your policy. However, you’ll need to pay an additional premium to be covered for any Level 2 and Level 3 activities like zip lining and hang gliding. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, we suggest you contact us to ask.

  • What types of incidents are covered while on a LARP trip?

If your trip is cancelled, delayed, or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your unused, non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses (up to the policy limits), and this could include unused, prepaid, non-refundable tours that you paid for in advance. If you fall and get hurt while LARPing and require emergency medical assistance, emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You could also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags or if the Canadian government issues a travel advisory for your trip destination.

Travel Insurance for Live Action Role Playing (LARP)

Learn about the benefits of travel insurance for live action role playing, and why you may want to consider coverage before your next trip.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Whether you are into fantasy, renaissance, steampunk, or horror, the excitement of participating in live action role play (LARP) can be electrifying. You’re able to step away from the mundane reality and responsibilities of life, and temporarily enjoy some adventurous fun in a fictional setting.

Most game masters take steps to try to keep the environment safe, but some things can’t be avoided. If you are attacked by a crunchy, step back too far when blocking, and trip over a tree root, that fall to the ground will bring you back to reality quickly. If you have plans to participate in a LARP event on your next trip, you may want to consider a World Nomads travel insurance plan with adventure sports cover.

Should I consider travel insurance for LARP?

Trip and falls are some of the most common injuries that happen while LARPing. When you’re engrossed in the moment as a player or non-player character, you can become so consumed in your actions that you don’t pay attention to the terrain around you. Uneven ground and a twisted ankle can be scarier than the horde of monsters coming towards you. Getting hit in the eye with a spell packet is not any fun either. If you get hurt, your health insurance may not always cover you when you are traveling to destinations outside of your network or plan. However, a travel insurance plan from World Nomads could assist by helping to reimburse expenses for costs like x-rays, prescription medications, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs if you get hurt while LARPing.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

If you are looking to explore even more sports and adventures during your travels, you can compare the adventure travel insurance cover in both the Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans that are offered by World Nomads, as we offer cover for more than 150 activities

When you get a quote, you can select your country of residence, and compare both plans side by side to see what each covers. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and for some countries of residence, it includes additional covered activities. Depending on your country of residence, you may need to add activities to your policy when you purchase it. Check out both plan options, because only you can decide the best travel insurance for your needs.

If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to emergency medical cover, travel insurance may help with several other unexpected situations you may encounter while you are on your trip. Depending on your country of residence, World Nomads may also offer cover for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline lost the bag that held your favorite boffer sword, baggage cover may help replace it if it’s lost by a common carrier.
  • Trip Interruption and Cancellation Insurance: If something unexpected happens like an illness or injury, and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.
  • Evacuation: If you get injured while LARPing in a place where there aren't nearby medical facilities, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.

What are some things travel insurance would not cover?

If you arrive at your event, and aren’t vibing with the plot of your LARP, your adventure travel insurance would not cover the cancellation of your trip. Some other things that are not covered include:

  • Damage that happens to your LARP equipment while you are using it
  • Injuries that happen if you are LARPing under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy

Never make assumptions about safety and always ask questions related to the equipment and actions that are classified as safe.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.
