Camping in wild and remote places is right of passage for many Aussies. Discover the hike-in only campsites on the Hawaiian Islands or go solo camping in the Canadian Rockies to get under the skin of a country on a camping break.
Travel insurance can help with unexpected costs if a sudden illness or injury lands you in hospital, if you’re left empty handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your camping gear in it!), or if severe weather puts a dent in your camping plans.
World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:
Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for level 1 sport and adventure activities that include camping and hiking up to 2,000 metres, as well as activities such as surfing, kayaking and bungy jumping.
For Aussies looking for more adventurous pursuits, you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re planning on camping or hiking up to 6,000 metres or if you’re abseiling or mountain biking. Specify all the activities you’re planning on your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your PDS for details or contact us.
Camping holidays can serve up some serious surprises. If that hike to catch the sunrise turns into a nasty misstep and you need a doctor urgently, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. They can help direct you to the nearest medical centre or arrange emergency transport to the most appropriate facility.
Traveller Tip: check you have any relevant paperwork as you’ll probably be asked for proof for a number of things such as entry permits for countries you’ll be visiting, special tourist visas, digital COVID-19 certificates, proof of vaccinations and a negative PCR test, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.
For self-drive camping trips, the Explorer Plan has cover for the rental insurance excess if you’re involved in a car accident. If you’re taking your own sports equipment, such as a kayak, the Explorer Plan also offers cover to hire replacement equipment if:
Please note: sporting equipment that is checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight.
Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (such as camping in an area that is against local authority warnings). Some things we don’t cover include:
Travel Insurance Tip: before you head off into the wilderness, follow the camping regulations that apply to that region or country. If you unknowingly cross into another country that is not on your certificate of insurance, it could affect your cover.
This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
You can also buy away from home or buy more cover if you extend your trip. Plus, you can claim online anytime, anywhere in the world.
Whether you need medical assistance or emergency evacuation, our teams are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year before and during your trip.

From the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to the streets of Stone Town, learn why travel insurance is recommended for Americans in Tanzania.

Home to Serengeti National Park where lions and giraffes roam among the plains. Home to the snowy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point on the African continent. And home to the white sand beaches and turquoise waters surrounding the island of Zanzibar.
Tanzania is famed for its thrilling wildlife experiences, its picturesque national parks (21 to be exact), and its diverse culture. It’s no wonder that it is a top destination for Americans. You can also trek with chimpanzees in Gombe National Park (where Jane Goodall set up a chimpanzee research center many years ago), learn age-old traditions with Maasai warriors, and savor Swahili food in busy markets.
While a trip to Tanzania is an incredible experience, there are always some things to be aware of, from lost baggage to natural disasters. We encourage you to consider travel insurance* for Tanzania to help protect your vacation.
International travel can bring all kinds of unexpected surprises - like watching a leopard make a kill while on a safari tour in Ngorongoro Crater.
Some surprises aren’t so great, though. Nobody wants to think about things like canceled trips and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly. You might come down with symptoms for malaria and need to see a doctor. Or perhaps you fell and broke your ankle while climbing Mount Meru and need to be evacuated to a hospital. You may wish then you had travel insurance for Tanzania.
There are four plans to select from, and when you get a quote, you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.
While summitting Mount Kilimanjaro and taking a safari are among Tanzania’s most popular attractions, there are plenty of adventures to be had. World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Americans traveling to Tanzania and includes things like scuba diving off Pemba Island, undertaking a volunteer project in a local school, or embarking on one of Tanzania’s other incredible treks.
Before you get a quote for your travel insurance for Tanzania, it’s smart to have an idea of which activities you’d like to do. Each insurance plan covers different activities so a rough itinerary can help you select the best insurance for your adventure.
For example, if you’re itching to kite surf on Paje Beach in Zanzibar or go hiking in the Usambara Mountains, all World Nomads travel insurance plans, including the Standard Plan, will cover you. However, if you’re dreaming of taking a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti, you’ll want to upgrade to the Explorer or Epic Plan to get full coverage.
Before you take off on your Tanzanian excursion, we recommend that you make an appointment with Runway Health-- an online travel clinic and our non-insurance service partner. The telehealth service offers online consultations 24/7 and can help you obtain necessary vaccinations or medications, such as malaria prevention and medication to help with altitude sickness and traveler’s diarrhea.
We also recommend packing a few basic supplies for your trip, as some things aren’t always available, especially in rural areas of Tanzania. Strong mosquito repellant to help prevent malaria, sunscreen, and bandages are a good place to start.
If you have a medical emergency when traveling in Tanzania, you can call the 24/7 emergency assistance team and they can help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. They can also help communicate with your Tanzanian medical team if there is a cultural or language barrier.
Maybe you broke your hip while attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and your attending physician (and the 24/7 emergency assistance team) determines that it’s best for you to go home to the US to get medical care. The repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Tanzania may cover the costs to get you there.
From routine to more complicated procedures, health care in Tanzania can be challenging and different than what you’re used to in the US. Tap water isn’t safe so make sure to drink bottled or filtered water. You’re not always going to have a place to wash your hands before you eat – and a lot of local food is eaten with hands—so carry disinfectant wipes to reduce your chances of getting sick. Malaria is a reality in Tanzania. If you suspect that you may have malaria symptoms, go to a local clinic for a test. That is something that most clinics can test and treat—and is more commonly understood than if you were to seek treatment for it back in the United States.
If you’re planning to climb Kili, you probably packed your hiking boots. You will be pretty bummed to land in Arusha and realize that the airline lost your bag.
If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If your bag is delayed at least 12 hours, your travel insurance for Tanzania may reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries until you and your bag are reunited.
The first step is to contact the airline. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact Blue Ribbon Bags, our non-insurance service partner that will track and expedite the return of your undelivered baggage by the airline. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call Blue Ribbon Bags so you can file a lost luggage claim.
Theft is something to watch out for in Tanzania—especially in crowded markets or on the streets of Dar es Salaam. Dress modestly and leave flashy jewelry at home to blend in as best you can and reduce your chances of being a target of theft.
A few other things you can do to stay safe include carrying your bag in front of you and leaving unnecessary valuables in a locked place in your accommodation, including credit cards (you’ll pretty much just be using cash, anyway!) Crime can increase at night, so it is advised to avoid walking after dark unless you are in well-lit areas.
If you take one of Tanzania’s famed buses across the country, they are typically packed with chickens, goats, luggage, and lots of people-- so be aware of your belongings!
And if you’re planning a road trip through this incredible country, remember that driving in Tanzania is different than in the US. Expect rough roads, look out for potential animal crossings, and avoid driving at night, if possible, as crime can increase, and roads are often unlit in remote areas. Your Explorer, Epic or Annual travel insurance plan for Tanzania could also include rental car damage protection, covering potential mechanical failures or delays caused by car issues along your adventure.
When you’re searching for the best travel insurance for Tanzania, check to make sure it has coverage for trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption. If it does, you could be reimbursed for unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if something unexpected happens.
Nature is unpredictable and natural disasters are always a possibility. If flash floods sweep through Serengeti National Park and wash out your safari lodge, your travel insurance for Tanzania may help you be reimbursed for non-refundable, prepaid tours and hotel accommodations that you paid for in advance.
World Nomads travel insurance may also help if you’re already on your trip and something happens. For example, you may need to go back to the United States early if an immediate family member has an unexpected medical emergency or dies.
Tanzania is a long way from the United States, and a bucket list destination for many Americans. If you want an additional safety net for your trip, consider purchasing CFAR (cancel for any reason) as an add-on to your Explorer or Epic Plan during the time sensitive period. Whether you simply change your mind or need to cancel your vacation for any reason not covered by the insurance plan, CFAR allows you to cancel and get back a portion of your prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses, whether that be a cruise or a cultural excursion.
Home to over 120 ethnic groups and 126 languages, Tanzania is incredibly diverse. Kiswahili is spoken by a large part of the population and knowing a few words and phrases will go a long way. You may want to read out guide for cultural do’s and dont’s in Tanzania, including dressing modestly – especially in Muslim areas like Zanzibar.
Before you leave the United States, we encourage you to check out the US government’s safety warnings for Tanzania. Weather, safety, and political situations can change at any time, and this is where they list any current advisories.
If you purchase travel insurance for Tanzania, it’s a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.
ATMs can be difficult to find in remote areas, and can run out of cash, so travel with sufficient cash. American dollars are widely accepted by major tour operators and in safari lodges but for markets and smaller purchases, you’ll need to use Tanzanian shillings.
When you’re booking tours, research for ethical, responsible excursions. The same goes for booking a trek to Kili. Look for a company that treats the porters fairly, including pay and proper gear for the environment. Speaking of the outdoors, keep those camera batteries charged so you can snap all the incredible wildlife you’re sure to be spotting—and don’t forget to read our guide to safely photographing wildlife. Have fun, and safari njema!

Lions, leopards, and rhinos... they’re only the beginning of the jaw-dropping sights you may encounter on an adventurous trip to Tanzania. The country has 21 national parks, including Gombe Stream National Park (where Dr. Jane Goodall founded a chimpanzee research centre in 1965) and Serengeti National Park, the safari mecca where 4,000 lions and 550 cheetahs roam among the grassy plains.
Like much-needed mosquito netting, World Nomads is here to help protect you and can help take the edge off your worries so you can maximize the sheer beauty of it all instead.
Crime can be a problem in Tanzania. Tourists can be the victims of theft, carjacking and mugging, especially in crowded cities. When you have a World Nomads policy, you may be covered for the loss of your belongings, up to their depreciated value, and to the per-article and total maximum benefit amount.
Always file a police report and hold on to a copy for World Nomads. Carrying colorful Tanzanian shillings? Depending on your Country of Residence, there’s limited or no coverage for cash, so leave what you won’t need for a day out in the safe at your hotel, if possible.
Rain, rain, go away... during Tanzania’s waterlogged monsoon months (March through May and November thru December), flooded roads may be impassable, or you could be stuck in a cyclone. Translation? Ruined plans and you missing out on things you already paid for.
When surprises such as this happen, World Nomads can step in to support you: depending on your Country of Residence, your coverage could include anything from trip cancellation and trip interruption to an evacuation to a safe place. Your choice of a Standard or an Explorer Plan may also decide what benefits you get.
Just note that if a natural disaster has already been forecast or happened after you purchased your policy, it’s not reimbursable. (In other words, you can’t get an insurance policy for something you already know about)
If you’re planning a trip to Tanzania, you may want to consider a World Nomads plan. World Nomads covers more than 150 adventure sports and activities. Read our Help Center article on adventure sports coverage to ensure your activities are included. Additional premiums may apply, and coverage may vary between the Standard and Explorer plans.
Your World Nomads plan can come in handy if tracking elephants on a guided walking safari through the Selous Game Reserve or paddle boarding in a lagoon near Zanzibar After all, a twisted ankle or appendicitis can happen anywhere; and you may want emergency medical coverage for sudden accidents or sicknesses.
Conditions may apply. For example, you may be covered for abseiling – also known as climbing a rock or rappelling – but only up to a certain elevation. Read your policy for more details or contact us with your coverage questions.
World Nomads policy holders have access to 24/7 Emergency Assistance... good news if you’re up a Tanzanian creek without a paddle. Experts on the line can connect you to the nearest qualified hospitals, assist with paperwork, and more. You may also need to touch base with them before undergoing any major medical procedures or evacuation services.

Point breaks, offshore breezes, and rays of sun beating on your face. From Europe’s top surf sites to Mexico’s western coast, surfing the blue ocean can create a big adrenaline rush ─ but so can stingray encounters, jagged coral reefs, and (gulp!) shark attacks.
Along with your sunblock and shades, don’t forget to pack your surf travel insurance. World Nomads can help get you back on your feet if your surf break turns into a wipeout.
Our plans cover inclement weather under certain circumstances (say, a snowstorm cancels your flight or a hurricane wipes out your hotel), and include benefits for trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay coverage due to a variety of reasons. Here’s what you need to know about surf travel insurance.
As a surf enthusiast, you can catch the waves with the coverage we provide, from remote towns with pristine beaches to the most popular surf breaks worldwide.
Got your stuff stolen while surf town-hopping in Costa Rica or get injured while hiking to a waterfall? We get that even if your primary adventure is surfing, you may also want to do a bunch of other fun activities on your trip as well. Well, World Nomads also covers over 250 other sports, activities and experiences you might want to engage in during your surfing vacation. Some of these water-based activities include:
You must list every activity you plan to engage in during your trip on your plan, otherwise you won’t be covered if something happens during an unlisted activity.
The coverage – and the maximum benefit limits – for your specific activity depends on which plan you buy. Our article on covered sports and activities should help you decide on whether to buy our Standard plan or our Explorer plan as they have different levels of coverage. You can’t upgrade your coverage after you purchase a plan, so it’s important to get this right on the first go.
Unfortunately, we won’t cover you if you do something careless or out of control (like tackle big-wave off-shore surfing when you’re only a beginner). Some things we may not cover include:
When it comes to any sport, safety should always come first. Your health ─ and your travel insurance coverage ─ depends on your responsible behavior. Follow these tips to stay alert and aware (and to ensure that you won’t invalidate your travel insurance).
Are you travelling long-term? Lucky you! You can buy always more travel insurance when abroad (waiting periods may apply) even if you don’t have a return ticket. World Nomads plans offer coverage for up to 365 days at a time with the Standard and Explorer plans.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

The Coronavirus pandemic is the single biggest challenge travelers have faced in the last 50 years. While visa and travel rules frequently change, they rarely do so on the scale we’re seeing around the world.
Before you even think about packing your bags it’s more important than ever to start planning as you’ll need to add some extra check boxes to your normal To Do list before you go.
Depending on your Country of Residence and your selected plan, travel insurance may help if:
For more information related to Coronavirus and travel insurance cover check out our COVID FAQs
Many countries now require travelers to have coronavirus-specific travel insurance. Whether you want to purchase travel insurance or not, the choice may be taken out of your hands if you want to travel to specific countries. Travel insurance requirements range from requiring basic medical cover for emergencies, to a full travel insurance policy that includes cover for specific Coronavirus-related events such as quarantine.
Once you’re fully vaccinated (which may mean more than one dose depending on the vaccine and if you need a booster shot), and you’ve been given the all-clear from your medical practitioner to travel, you may need proof of vaccination with your airline, hotel, tour operator or at passport control. Research entry requirements for the countries you’re visiting as they may need a specific format of vaccine passport. Always travel with original or digital copies of your vaccination. You may also be asked to show evidence of being vaccinated by your airline, hotel, and when arriving at your intended destination.
We’ve seen many countries open and then close their borders as Coronavirus cases fall and then increase. Once you’ve booked a trip, you’ll need to keep an eye on border restrictions and entry requirements at the country you’re traveling to, as well as for your own country of residence. Some governments are advising their citizens to not travel to certain countries. It may affect any claims you make under your travel insurance cover if you travel to a destination against your government’s advice.
Look out for any last-minute government travel updates, as well as notifications from airlines and other travel companies you’ve made bookings with.
Unless you’re staying with family or friends while traveling, you’ll be booking hotels, hostels, or campgrounds, as well as tours and activities in advance. Check with your accommodation provider and tour operator to find out if there are any last-minute cancellations or changes to Coronavirus requirements. Some hotels or hostels may require visitors to be vaccinated or to show a negative PCR test in some cases 48 or 72 hours before arrival.
It’s great that your vaccinated and have proof of it (like a vaccine passport) but you may still need a specific vaccine with some countries specifying which vaccines are eligible for entry, and yours may not be on the list. Check the entry requirements of any country you are planning to visit well ahead of your travel date to allow enough time to take any tests and confirm the vaccine you’ve taken is approved for entry. If it’s not on the list – it won’t matter if you've been vaccinated, you won’t be let in.
This really depends on your Country of Residence and the plan you purchase. Some of our policies offer cover for some Coronavirus-related events but these may vary between plans. While one policy might offer cover for the cost of your quarantine, another may not. Make sure you select your chosen plan carefully and that you know what you're covered for before making a purchase.
For more details, or if you have a specific question about World Nomads insurance, please visit our online Help Center or contact us.
Note: Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Read your policy carefully and make sure you know what’s covered and what’s not before you buy. Benefit limits, terms and conditions and specific exclusions apply.
If you're experiencing a medical emergency and need medical help, contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team who can help direct you to medical help, and if necessary, work with local authorities to repatriate you home, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy.

One of the best things about road trips is the freedom to explore at your own pace, on your own terms. We’ve written extensively about some of our favorite road trips over the years and how to stay safe on the open road. If your plans have you driving through the US, we’ve got your covered. How about more exotic locations like Uganda, Malta or the Australian Outback? Your road trip travel insurance can protect you there, too. We’ve seen our share of car breakdowns and have taken notes on how to fix some common problems. Sometimes though, you are forced to take a detour for sickness or inclement weather. Our road trip travel insurance is designed by travellers for travellers, and this is when World Nomads can help.
Road trips are a great way to experience local culture, see sights off the beaten track and immerse yourself in your travel destination. But there can be a lot of unknowns when driving outside of Canada. It pays to research, plan for the unexpected and know who to call if you get lost.
World Nomads plans are designed to help protect you, your personal belongings, and your vacation investment. It’s important to know that our policies for Canadian residents do not include collision damage waiver coverage and will not provide protection for rental cars. Our policies have many other benefits though for incidents that could occur while on the road. Our policies can offer coverage (up to policy limits) for:
Anything from an unexpected illness or injury, a travel advisory or even the death of an immediate family member can prevent you from going on your road trip. Trip Cancellation may offer coverage for some of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs if an emergency happens.
Your health and safety are a priority when you’re getting behind the wheel and travelling to new destinations. That's why our plans cover emergency medical expenses in the times when you're most vulnerable – when you're sick, get into an accident or get hurt.
Your cross-country adventure may take you far from medical help, and if you need emergency medical evacuation or repatriation to your home province our road trip travel insurance policy may help you.
Be sure to check the maximum benefit amount specified in your policy and note that you must be covered under GHIP for the entire duration of your trip. Otherwise, you may have a reduced the benefit limit for your emergency medical and evacuation coverages.
When you’re on the road away from home, it’s hard to know where to go for help. When you buy a World Nomads plan, you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team to support you in a crisis. If you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere, need urgent medical attention or a referral for roadside assistance, our Emergency Assistance team can facilitate a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re travelling.
Don’t let an incident throw a wrench in your driving plans – our trip interruption coverage can help salvage your pre-paid, non-refundable trip expenses that you’ve had to forfeit because of a covered event that has disrupted your travels.
You may have camping gear in your trunk, sunglasses in your glove compartment or your travel documents hidden in the back of the seat pocket. Unfortunately, thieves can be crafty enough to dodge security measures and get into locked spaces.
With our travel insurance, you may be able make a claim for a replacement or a reimbursement of your stolen items, up to a per item and total maximum limit. That said, travel insurance may not cover items left unattended in your vehicle, so be sure not to leave important items and document unattended. Additional terms and conditions apply so be sure to check the policy wording and remember, you’ll need to file a police report in case of theft.
Road trips give you the flexibility to expand your adventures. Our policies cover more than 250 activities, sports, work and volunteer experiences including hiking, camping and surfing.
Add all adventure, sports, work or volunteer activities that you think you’ll be doing while on your trip, at the time you purchase your policy. You won’t be able to add it after you’ve purchased. More adventurous pursuits will require an upgrade, which you can do when you purchase your policy. Contact us if you have any questions around coverage for any activities you plan to do.
Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, and exclusions include, but are not limited to:
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions, and pre-existing condition exclusions. My boyfriend and I were talking a road trip down the west coast of Italy. We drove to Torvaianca beach to swim during sunrise with some friends who were staying in the area. When we came back about 30 minutes later, we saw that the car had been broken into in open daylight and all of our precious belongings that we had placed in the locked trunk were taken. We noticed a man bringing horses onto the beach and we asked him to help call the police and thankfully he knew English well enough to communicate to the officers where we were.

Delayed luggage is reportedly one of the top issues for our travellers in Singapore, which may not be surprising given it hosts such busy air and sea ports. Lost and stolen luggage and medical emergencies are also among the unexpected events that our travelers report.
World Nomads travel insurance is designed to help with many of the unexpected events that can occur while traveling.
One minute, you’re enjoying a cycling trip around the pristine island of Pulau Ubin, the next you’re in an ambulance wondering what happened. Accidents and illnesses can happen unexpectedly which is why our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team is always available to take your call. Our team members can:
Make sure you let us know how you’re doing and stay in touch with our EA team for the duration of your medical event. And don’t worry – if you’ve already left on your trip and wished you’d bought travel insurance, with World Nomads you can buy while you’re already overseas although waiting periods for cover may apply.
If you’re seriously injured or ill, our cover includes (if deemed medically necessary):
This is particularly helpful when you’re injured and require special assistance or arrangements (such as lying flat) while flying, which can require the purchase of multiple seats, business class travel or an air ambulance.
And, if you’re traveling alone and are unable to navigate your repatriation by yourself, depending on your Country of Residence, we may also send one of our World Nomads team members to accompany you home. You can read how we helped one of our travelers in this scenario.
Depending on your Country of Residence, World Nomads travel insurance offers cover for some COVID-19-related events.
You should also do your research about the COVID-19-related travel restrictions and entry requirements – including PCR tests and proof of vaccination – for the countries you’re traveling to. Make sure you’ve done your homework and know what you will need to enter or transit through Singapore.
Travel Insurance Tip: it’s your responsibility to check visa and entry requirements, and make sure you comply with them, to any destination you’re travelling to. Travel insurance doesn’t offer cover for the costs associated with being denied entry to a country because you didn’t have the right visas or entry requirements.
If your bags don’t arrive with you in Singapore, then luggage travel insurance may be able to help while the airline tries to find it. If your bags are delayed 12 hours (or 24 hours on some policies) after the scheduled landing time, you may be covered for basic expenses you incur as a result. This may include a change of clothes, a toothbrush and other basic necessities.
What to do if your bag doesn’t turn up: if your airline carrier has lost your luggage, you must exhaust all avenues with them first to try and locate it. You’ll need to file a lost luggage report with your carrier or the local authorities, and keep copies of all paperwork, including all receipts of expenses, for when you submit your claim.
If you’re not sure what to do, contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team who can help. All of the information we provide about travel insurance is a brief summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the travel insurance plans described. Coverage may not be available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage. If you’ve more questions, just get in touch.
World Nomads offers two plans for travelers going to Singapore – the Standard and Explorer plans. Each offers cover with different benefit limits for:

Costa Rica is teeming with incredible wildlife and beautiful landscapes, and like most visitors, the Irish are drawn to its misty volcanic peaks, rushing rapids, epic waves, and exotic rainforests. Many who seek out Costa Rica do so for the adventure and, of course, are in search of La Pura Vida.
To enter Costa Rica, you must fill in a Health Pass 72 hours prior to arrival and show proof of travel insurance. That’s where World Nomads comes in, as our policies provide cover, so you can focus on your holiday.
World Nomads has two levels of cover – Standard and Explorer – that offer different benefits, limits, and sub-limits, so it’s best to compare them. For Irish travellers with their sights set on Costa Rica, our policies include cover for:
Travel insurance tip 1: Irish residents will need to contact your private medical insurance (PMI) provider (if applicable) and follow its emergency medical procedures and claims procedures. Cover available under this travel insurance policy is in excess of any cover provided by your PMI. Also, provide us with details of your PMI provider to help us co-ordinate your care. Where your PMI provider does not cover you, contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team before incurring medical costs.
Irish travellers have long considered Costa Rica a great place to holiday. Most flights from Dublin require a stop on the way and transit time can take up to 16 hours. Those who are well travelled know that long haul doesn’t always mean smooth travelling, flights get delayed or cancelled, baggage goes missing, and documents/personal belongings are mislaid. Insurance can reduce this travel-related stress.
Apart from its spectacular natural beauty, road conditions in this part of Central America can be poor; crime does occur; it experiences hurricanes, and as the country is on the so-called Ring of Fire, it can be earthquake-prone.
When you’re at the beach, always follow lifeguard advice, and be aware of dangerous currents particularly at beaches that aren’t supervised by lifeguards.
If you’re a digital nomad, keep your tech devices secure as thieves are active everywhere.
If you’re hiring a car, our Explorer Plan covers rental car excess if you have an accident. Cover is also available for the cost of replacing rental car keys if they get lost, stolen or damaged during the rental period. You must have a valid licence from your country of residence for the class of vehicle you’re driving overseas, regardless of local laws. You must also comply with local laws of the country you’re driving in.
Please note: travel insurance doesn’t replace the need to have a signed rental vehicle agreement or damage waiver in place.
Explorer Plan policy holders can take advantage of provisions for hijacking and costs associated with natural disasters, so long as the event was unexpected and there wasn’t prior warning.
When it comes to the loss or theft of personal belongings, both plans offer travel insurance cover, but as always cover will depend on your country of residence and the circumstances.
Make sure you list all the activities you’re planning in the policy detail. Higher-risk activities may require an upgrade to the level of cover or an additional premium. Remember our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 and can assist with any language barriers you may face.
Travel insurance tip 2: Costa Rica grants visas to digital nomads. It allows foreign nationals and their families to live and work there for at least 12 months, with the possibility of a year-long renewal. The visa allows exemption from income tax, and a local bank account; this is a significant increase on the 90-day limit on tourist stays.
