Travel Insurance for Nepal

Essential travel advice for Canadians heading to Nepal

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance

  • World Nomads offers four travel insurance plans for your trip to Nepal. Plans range from standard to higher-limit protections.
  • Coverage may apply to popular activities in Nepal like trekking, kayaking and whitewater rafting.
  • Policies for Canadians include protection for medical evacuations, trip cancellations and lost luggage.

Nepal draws an ever-growing number of Canadians to the Himalayas but there’s plenty more to see and do beyond the peaks – it’s a welcoming country that blends adventure with rich cultural experiences. In Kathmandu, temples, market squares and ancient stupas set the tone, while in Pokhara, lakeside views and mountain backdrops offer a slower pace. Head south to Chitwan National Park for jungle safaris and wildlife encounters with rhinos, crocodiles and, if you’re lucky, elephants and Bengal tigers.

Travel insurance for adventure activities in Nepal

Some of the world’s most iconic trekking routes run through the Himalayas, and you don’t have to climb Mt Everest to have an exhilarating time. Multi-day hikes to Everest Base Camp or in the Annapurna region are epic, while shorter treks and viewpoints offer access to the same dramatic landscapes without the altitude. Nepal has some of the best rivers for kayaking and whitewater rafting in the world, while in Pokhara, paragliding or hot air ballooning will have you floating high above Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range as a backdrop. Mountain biking, bungee jumping and zip-flying offer faster-paced ways to explore.

Common insurance considerations for Nepal

Accidents and emergencies

No one likes imagining the worst, but if you do get seriously sick or have an accident that sends you to hospital, you’ll be thankful you purchased travel insurance before you left home. Hit by a motorcycle crossing the street? Tripped over on your trek to Base Camp and need stitches? Ate a dodgy momo and came down with a nasty bout of food poisoningEmergency assistance is a phone call away.

Emergency evacuation

If you get seriously sick or injured but you’re far from appropriate medical facilities, emergency evacuation and repatriation insurance can help get you the care you need. It may cover, up to the policy limits, the cost to get you to the closest appropriate medical facility or to your home province for further treatment. Under your World Nomads plan, emergency evacuation may be covered if it’s recommended by the attending physician and pre-approved by our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. This benefit could include transportation costs and any related medical services or supplies. If you’re in hospital for three days or more, it may also include the transportation of a family member or companion to your bedside or the return of a dependent child back to your home.

Trip Cancellation

The best trips are often the ones you’ve planned months in advance, but you can’t predict the future and unexpected situations can sometimes happen before you even set off. Trip cancellation coverage is included in all single-trip and annual travel insurance plans offered by World Nomads and gives you the opportunity to cancel your trip before you depart – but only for covered reasons. Optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to cancel for any reason that’s not otherwise covered by your plan. Broke up with your partner? You can cancel your trip. Sick dog? You can stay home to care for your fur baby. Change your mind about travelling? There’s no judgment here. Just make sure you purchase Cancel For Any Reason insurance cover within 15 days of making your first trip payment (like booking a hotel or flight).

Natural disasters

When a natural disaster strikes, even the most carefully planned trip can be thrown off course, but travel insurance can offer some much-needed weatherproofing. With protection for trip interruptionmedical emergencies, and even evacuation, you can head into the unknown feeling prepared for whatever comes your way. Do your research before you go though, because if you buy a policy after an event is known and the natural disaster impacts your trip, you won’t be covered for any expenses.

Tips for travelling to Nepal

  • Allow time to acclimatise – altitude sickness is a real risk on treks, so build in rest days and ascend gradually.
  • Stick to bottled or purified water and eat freshly cooked food to avoid illness.
  • Pack for changing conditions – temperatures can vary widely depending on altitude and conditions, so layers are essential.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings – Nepal is generally safe, but petty theft can occur in busy areas like Kathmandu and on trekking routes. Beware of scammers posing as guides.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for Nepal. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Do Canadians need a visa to visit Nepal?
Yes. Canadians need a visa to enter Nepal, which can be obtained on arrival at the airport. You can reduce your time in airport queues by applying for an ETA in advance. Requirements can change, so check official advice before you travel.
  • Is Nepal safe for tourists?

Nepal is generally safe for travellers, including trekkers, but a high degree of caution is advised. Petty theft can occur in busy areas like Kathmandu, and trekking in remote regions carries risks, particularly if you’re trekking solo, so it’s important to take sensible precautions – and travel with a guide if you can.

  • What do I do if I need emergency assistance?

No matter where you are in the world, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance partners at Travel Guard are ready to help – 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Whether it’s a medical emergencystolen gearmissing bags, or a natural disaster, they’re the first call to make. Need a translator? They can help with that too.

When you call, you’ll be asked if you are experiencing a travel emergency. If you are having a medical emergency, you’ll be connected with Emergency Assistance right away. If your situation is not urgent and you are calling outside of normal business hours, you’ll be able to leave a message and be called back.

The contact information for medical emergency assistance is:

    Phone: +1 866 878 0192 (toll-free from Canada and the Continental U.S.); or

Phone: +1 416 646 3723 (collect from anywhere else in the world)

  • What is the best time to visit Nepal?
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons – October to November and March to April – when conditions are ideal for trekking and sightseeing. The monsoon season (June to September) can bring heavy rain and disruptions.
  • Is altitude sickness a risk in Nepal?
Yes. Altitude sickness is a serious risk on treks exceeding altitudes higher than 2,500 metres. It’s important to acclimatise properly, ascend gradually and recognise the symptoms.
  • Do I need a guide for trekking in Nepal?
For many popular trekking routes, hiring a licensed guide is now required or strongly recommended. Guides improve safety, help with navigation and logistics, and enhance the overall experience, especially in remote or high-altitude areas.

Learn how trip delay insurance may help protect Canadians if their trip is unexpectedly delayed

    As featured in:

  • Coverage when your plans are put on hold: Trip delay insurance benefits may be included in the single trip and annual multi-trip plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance
  • Help with out-of-pocket delay costs: You may be reimbursed for reasonable expenses such as meals, hotel accommodations, taxi fares and essential phone calls if your trip is delayed because of an unforeseen, covered reason
  • Protection for common travel disruptions: World Nomads Travel Insurance may offer coverage for trip delays caused by natural disasters, sickness, strikes, delayed flights and more

Why should you consider travel insurance for delayed trips?

You’re counting down the days to your next epic getaway, and you’re doing all you possibly can to prepare. Even when you’ve done everything right, though, unexpected delays can happen. It’s frustrating to wait even longer to leave for your dream getaway, but it’s worse when you lose money. Unfortunately, there’s a chance you could be stuck with some unexpected costs if your trip is delayed. Most of us don’t factor these additional expenses into our travel budgets, but that’s where travel insurance for trip delays may come in handy.

If you incur additional, unplanned expenses for necessary transportation, accommodations, meals or essential phone calls due to a covered delay while you’re waiting to depart, you may be reimbursed for those expenses (up to the maximum benefits shown in your policy documents).

Types of Delays That May Be Covered

  • Certain airline delays
  • Unexpected medical emergencies
  • Your travel companion, immediate family member or business partner has an emergency medical situation or dies
  • Unannounced airline strikes
  • A travel advisory issued by the Canadian government
  • Natural disasters

Exclusions

  • Delays for reasons not listed in your plan documents
  • Expenses above the per-day and maximum benefit
  • Expenses covered by another party (such as your airline)
  • Epidemics and pandemics
  • Delays not communicated to us by the next business day

What's the difference between trip delay and trip interruption?

World Nomads Travel Insurance plans include coverage for both trip interruption and trip delay, but those apply to different situations. Trip delay coverage may help when your arrival at a destination is delayed. For example, the Canadian Government estimates that Canadians make about 32 million visits to countries that are potentially impacted by hurricane season, which increases the potential for weather situations that could impact your trip. If an unexpected, named storm delays the start of your trip, trip delay insurance may help. This coverage provides a subsistence allowance that may reimburse you for unplanned costs for things like commercial accommodations, meals, essential telephone calls, and taxi fares which you may incur in the event your trip is delayed due to a covered risk (up to the maximum limits shown in your policy documents).Remember, this expenses must be reasonable – you may want to contact us before you buy that fancy steak dinner or book that 5 star hotel.

Trip interruption coverage may assist if the named storm happens while you’re travelling and you’re unable to continue your trip as planned. These benefits may provide reimbursement for your unused, prepaid, non-refundable, trip arrangements as well as additional transportation expenses you may incur if your trip is interrupted due to a covered reason.

How to file a claim if your trip is delayed

Yes, it’s annoying, but trip delays are often out of your control and unfortunately are just a part of travelling. Hopefully your trip will be flawless and you’ll never have to deal with this part. If you do need to make a claim though, it’s important to know what to do.

  • First and foremost, make sure you contact us by no later than the next business day when you become aware of a trip delay.
  • You can then log in to your member account online and start a claim. If you didn’t create one previously, you can still create an account.
  • Attempt to recoup expenses from your travel providers. For example, if your delay is caused by your airline, you’ll first want to check with them to see if they can provide hotel and meal vouchers.  Check the Canadian Transportation Agency’s Flight Delays and Transportation Guide to see what is covered by airlines.
  • Make sure you save all documentation that could be needed for your claim. If your flight is delayed, ask the airline for documentation that lists the original and revised departure times, as well as the cause of the delay. Also don’t forget to save all receipts for your unexpected out-of-pocket expenses.

Travel insurance for adventure activities in Chile

Getting active outdoors is an essential part of the Chile experience. In the north, the Atacama Desert is the place to go for sandboarding, stargazing under some of the clearest skies on earth and exploring salt flats and geysers at high altitude. Further south, Patagonia is all about scale – think multi-day treks in Torres del Paine, glacier hikes and kayaking past icebergs. You can also ride horses across wide-open plains or take on challenging climbs in the Andes. Along the coast, world-class waves roll into places like Pichilemu, while offshore waters are ideal for diving. Skiing in Chile is also world-class.

Common insurance considerations for Chile

Accidents and emergencies

No one likes imagining the worst, but if you do get seriously sick or have an accident that sends you to hospital, you’ll be thankful you purchased travel insurance before you left home. Fell off a horse in Patagonia? Wiped out on a mountain bike descent and ended up in hospital? Ate ceviche past its prime and got a bad bout of food poisoningEmergency assistance is a phone call away.

Under your World Nomads plan, emergency evacuation can be covered if it’s recommended by the attending physician and pre-approved by our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. This benefit could include transportation costs and any related medical services or supplies. If you’re in hospital for three days or more, it may also include the transportation of a family member or companion to your bedside or the return of a dependent child back to your home.

Trip interruption

No matter how good of a time you’re having in Chile, things can happen that mean you have to finish your trip early or you’re unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. If you get severely injured or sick while you're travelling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip. World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage that may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if your plans change for a covered reason.

Tips for travelling to Chile

  • Distances can be surprisingly long, so plan driving routes carefully
  • Pack for changing conditions, especially if you’re visiting places like Patagonia or the Atacama where temperatures can vary widely
  • Take care at altitude in northern Chile and allow time to acclimatise if visiting high-elevation areas
  • Watch out for petty crime – pickpocketing, bag snatching and theft from vehicles happens in cities and tourist areas.

In the northwest, red-rock valleys and high-altitude deserts add yet another dimension. Before venturing beyond Buenos Aires, though, catch a football match, settle in for a proper asado (barbecue) and wander barrios like San Telmo, La Boca and Recoleta to get a sense of the city’s history. Canadian travellers will find Argentinians social and welcoming – this alone can make a good destination great. Travel with confidence, knowing you’re prepared for the unexpected.

Common insurance considerations for Argentina

Accidents and emergencies

No one likes imagining the worst, but if you do get seriously sick or have an accident that sends you to hospital, you’ll be thankful you purchased travel insurance before you left home. Fell over hiking in Patagonia? Wiped out on a mountain bike descent and ended up in hospital? Ate ceviche past its prime and got a bad bout of food poisoningEmergency assistance is a phone call away.

Sick dog? You can stay home. Change your mind about travelling? There’s no judgment here. Just make sure you purchase Cancel For Any Reason insurance cover within 15 days of making your first trip payment (like booking a hotel or flight).

Trip interruption

No matter how good of a time you’re having in Argentina, things can happen that mean you have to finish your trip early or you’re unable to participate in your full planned itinerary.

Tips for travelling to Argentina

  • Distances are vast, so plan ahead and consider domestic flights to cover long routes efficiently
  • Dinner is eaten late, often from 9pm onwards, so adjust your schedule accordingly
  • Book ahead for popular experiences like Iguazú Falls and Patagonia during peak season
  • If drinking mate with locals – don’t stir the straw and pass the gourd back to the server when finished

Travel Insurance for Indonesia

Everything you need to know about Indonesia, a world where ancient temples coexist with bustling cities.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Indonesia’s the world's largest archipelago to form a single state – where emerald jungles meet sprawling rice terraces and volcanic landscapes. From Yogyakarta's vibrant streets to the Gili islands' serene shores, Indonesia’s a tapestry of diverse experiences waiting to be discovered. But, with such adventures comes the unexpected, which is why you may consider packing some travel insurance before setting off to wander Jakarta’s markets, surf Bali's waves, or trek Sumatra's lush trails.

What’s covered

At World Nomads, we try to keep insurance simple so you can focus on enjoying your time abroad. We offer two insurance plans: Standard and Explorer – our Standard Plan offers a base level of coverage, and our Explorer Plan offers coverage with more benefits and higher limits.

Depending on your Country of Residence, your travel insurance plan can offer cover for:

  • Delayed, lost, or stolen baggage and personal effects: Heading to Indonesia with checked bags? There's a slim chance they might go on an unplanned tour. No sweat – our delay benefits can cover essential items (think basic clothing and toiletries) until your baggage finds its way back to you. And if your gear’s lost or pinched? We’re here to help (after you’ve gone through other necessary channels first). Want to know more about World Nomads travel insurance cover for baggage and personal effects? We have an entire article here.
  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption: World Nomads travel insurance for trip interruption might have you covered for unexpected trip cancellations to Indonesia – think family emergencies or a doctor-advised travel halt. On the road and need to head back home early? Our policy could cover your return and any non-refundable costs. Just remember, keep those receipts and docs for any claims!
  • Overseas medical emergencies and hospital expenses: No one plans to go to Bali and get Bali Belly, yet…we all know it happens. Problem is, your usual health insurance may not cover you abroad, and medical expenses can be costly. Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer overseas medical travel insurance coverage.
  • Cover for 150+ adventure sports and activities: If you’re a fan of getting the adrenaline pumping while holidaying abroad, then Indonesia’s got the goods for you. Diving in Komodo Park, or jungle trekking in Borneo? You may be covered. With World Nomads, you're covered for over 150 adventure sports and activities. But, before you dive into Indonesia's natural wonders, make sure to check your policy to ensure your action-seeking pursuits are included.

Whether you're temple-hopping in Bali or diving in Raja Ampat, choosing the right level of coverage is key. Read the policy wording, browse the World Nomads’ Help Center, or contact our customer service team to see if what you’re planning to do is covered under your plan.

Need a quote? You can get one online, before you leave your country of residence or when you’re already in Indonesia.

What’s not covered

Remember, travel insurance isn't a catch-all safety net. Our goal at World Nomads is to be there for you when you need us most, but there are a few things that fall outside of our policies:

  • Off the list activities and sports: If it's not in our policy wording or you haven't opted for that extra cover, those adventurous pursuits aren't covered.
  • Doctor's orders: Ignoring advice from your doctor or our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team? That's a no-go for coverage.
  • Valuables on the loose: Items that get lost, stolen, or damaged because they were left unwatched? We can't cover those.
  • Risky business: Taking unnecessary risks, breaking local laws, or misbehaving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol? It’s not only dumb, it’s also not covered.
  • Unclaimed expenses: If you haven't tried to get back costs from other sources like carriers or booking agents, we can't step in.
  • Change of heart: Decided not to travel? That's a personal choice we can't cover.

This is just a quick rundown. To really get into the nitty-gritty of what's covered (and what's not), give your policy wording a thorough read. It's the best way to know exactly where you stand with your travel insurance. Still not sure? Contact us. We’re happy to help.

What to do if your flight is delayed or cancelled

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

So, you’re stuck at the airport, and your travel plans are suddenly up in the air (pun intended). Whether your flight’s been delayed, cancelled, or you’ve missed your connection, it’s a frustrating experience.

As an EU traveller, you have certain rights, and your airline should be your first stop for assistance. But don’t forget, your travel insurance might offer additional perks - like access to airport lounges through SmartDelay™ - making the wait a bit more bearable (perhaps even enjoyable). Grab a beverage and read on to discover how to make the best of a bad situation and keep your journey on track.

Step 1: Stay calm and gather information

Take a deep breath and try not to panic. Flight disruptions happen, and you'll get through this.

  • Check the airport screens (if you’re already there) or your airline's mobile app for real-time updates on your flight status.
  • If you can't find any information, head to the airline's customer service desk or call their helpline. Get up to speed and stay informed.

Travelers tip: it’s a great idea to download your airline’s app before you leave home, because let’s face it, no one likes having to stand in chaotic situations, trying to download and register for apps in moments of stress. If the app is already on your phone, you can access the information you need, as soon as you know you have flight issues.

Step 2: Know your rights

  • European airlines are bound by various regulations, including the European Union's Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, commonly known as EU261.
  • This regulation outlines the rights of air passengers in the event of flight disruptions, empowering us with clear entitlements and potential compensation.
  • According to this regulation, you may be entitled to compensation, care, and assistance depending on the circumstances of your delay or cancellation.
  • Compensation amounts can vary based on the length of the delay, distance of the flight, and whether the disruption was within the airline's control.

Traveler tip: When your flight is canceled or you miss a connection, it’s natural to want to immediately book a new flight. But take a breath and hold off. Your airline might automatically rebook you on the next available flight—often at no extra cost. Before making any decisions, check your airline’s app or speak to their customer service. Buying a new ticket in haste might mean you’re left paying out of pocket, as airlines typically won’t reimburse you for flights purchased independently, and travel insurance may only cover specific situations. Patience can save you both money and stress.

Step 3: Seek compensation and assistance

  • If your flight is cancelled or delayed for more than three hours, and the airline is responsible for the disruption, you may be entitled to compensation.
  • Approach the airline's customer service desk and request the necessary forms to file a claim for compensation. Alternatively, you can request a refund form online through the airline’s website.
  • Be sure to collect any relevant documentation, such as boarding passes and receipts for additional expenses incurred due to the delay or cancellation.

Travelers tip: if your airline offers you a reasonable alternative, take it. Should you need to make a travel insurance claim later, you’ll need to show that you first tried to get reimbursed by the airline or your travel provider. Keep all the proof handy—it’ll make your claim process smoother.

Step 4: Make alternate arrangements

  • Your airline is legally bound to provide you with alternative travel arrangements in the event of a cancellation.
  • Depending on the length of the delay or cancellation, you might need to make new travel arrangements.
  • If your flight is delayed overnight or cancelled, the airline should provide you with accommodation, meals, and transportation if needed.
  • If the airline doesn't provide these services, keep all receipts and consider claiming these expenses as part of your compensation (from the airline). If the airline’s unable to provide meal or hotel vouchers, you may be able to claim for reimbursement of out-of-pocket meal and lodging expenses under your trip delay benefit. You’ll need written confirmation from your airline that includes:
  • the reason for the delay
  • scheduled departure and return times
  • actual departure and return times

Traveler tip: getting to the airport early is key. Aim for at least two hours for domestic flights and three for international ones—but double-check with your airline for the latest advice. This way, you’ll breeze through security with time to spare, keeping your travel day stress-free.

Step 5: Document everything

  • Keep a record of all communication with the airline, including names, dates, and times of conversations or emails.
  • Take photos or screenshots of any relevant information, such as flight status screens or announcements.
  • These records will be valuable if you need to escalate your claim or seek legal advice.

Traveller tip: delays and cancellations happen more often than we’d like, so it’s best to be prepared. Wear comfy clothes, pack some snacks, and have your favourite book, show, or playlist ready to keep you entertained while you wait.

Step 6: Check your travel insurance

Travel insurance may be able to step in where your airline falls short. Here are some situations where travel insurance may be able to provide some relief.

World Nomads offers a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan, which have different per-day and maximum benefit limits. For EU travellers, who’ve purchased an Explorer Plan, World Nomads may offer the following coverage:

  • If an airline refused to provide meal or lodging vouchers, you may be able to claim for reimbursement of those expenses after a delay of 12 or more hours. The Explorer Plan allows for up to €200 (€50 each 12 hours, per person) for additional accommodation and meals, and up to €1,000 for additional transport.
  • If your delayed or cancelled flight caused you to miss pre-paid accommodation or tours, you may be able to claim reimbursement for those unused, pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs.
  • If you’re stuck overnight and your airline can’t deliver your checked baggage for more than 24 hours, you can claim for reimbursement of essential toiletries and a change of clothes under your baggage insurance benefits.

Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits. Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits.

Make delays work for you with SmartDelay

What is SmartDelay?

Turn delays into downtime with SmartDelay. Offered exclusively to World Nomad travel insurance policyholders, SmartDelay transforms an otherwise frustrating flight delay into an opportunity for a moment of comfort and relaxation – at no extra cost. Now, that’s one way to turn a negative into a positive, right?

How does it work?

Before you travel (at least 24 hours), simply register your flight details with SmartDelay. If your flight gets delayed by more than 90 minutes, you and up to four additional passengers (named on their policy and on the same flight) automatically receive a LoungeKey™ pass, aka your personal ticket to a comfortable, relaxing airport lounge (and complimentary snacks—plenty of snacks!).

What can you expect in the lounge?

With SmartDelay, you can enjoy a range of benefits in the airport lounge, including:

  • Complimentary snacks and drinks: ditch the overpriced airport snacks – light refreshments and nibbles are on us!
  • Wi-Fi and charging stations: whether you’re keeping up on socials, emails, or the footy score, we’ll keep you charged and in the loop.
  • Comfortable seating: escape the chaos of the terminal, chill and recharge before getting up in the air.

Entertainment options: pass the time with a selection of TVs, magazines, and more – keeping boredom at bay while you wait for your flight.

What's excluded under your travel insurance policy?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Exclusions include, but are not limited to:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions. You can read more about pre-existing medical conditions here.
  • You running late, getting stuck in traffic or a long security line and missing your flight.
  • Purchase of a new flight because you didn’t want to wait to be rebooked by your airline.
  • Luxury hotel suites and the most expensive thing on the menu. Travel insurance is meant to cover reasonable out-of-pocket expenses if you’re delayed.
  • Flight delays of less than 12hours.
  • Baggage delays of less than 24 hours.
  • Expenses that have been reimbursed by your airline.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel coverage, please contact us for help.

What to do if your flight is delayed or cancelled

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Planning a getaway and looking forward to some well-deserved travel outside of Ireland? Whether you're heading to the sun-soaked beaches of Spain or exploring the bustling streets of New York, flight delays can throw a wrench in your plans.

But don’t let a delayed flight ruin your trip. With World Nomads' travel insurance, you can relax knowing you're covered. Plus, with features like SmartDelay™, you can turn those unexpected hold-ups into a chance to unwind in style.

Step 1: Stay calm and gather information

Flight delays happen—don’t panic. Start by checking the airport screens or your airline’s app for real-time updates. If there’s no information available, head to the airline’s customer service desk or call their helpline to get the latest status.

As a traveller from Ireland, you’re protected under European Union regulations like EU261, which outline passenger rights when flights are delayed or cancelled. Depending on the circumstances, you could be entitled to compensation, meals, accommodation, or even refunds.

  • If your flight is delayed for more than three hours, and the airline is responsible, you may be eligible for compensation. Approach the airline’s customer service desk to request forms for a compensation claim or check their website. Be sure to collect any relevant documentation, such as boarding passes and receipts for additional expenses incurred due to the delay or cancellation.

In the event of a cancellation, your airline must provide alternative travel arrangements. For lengthy delays, this could include accommodation, meals, and transportation.

If the airline doesn't provide these services, keep all receipts and consider claiming these expenses as part of your compensation (from the airline).

Keep records of all your interactions with the airline—note names, dates, and times of conversations. Take photos or screenshot of flight status screens, announcements, or other relevant information.

Traveller tip: delays and cancellations happen more often than we’d like, so it’s best to be prepared. Wear comfy clothes, pack some snacks, and have your favourite book, show, or playlist ready to keep you entertained while you wait.

Step 6: Check your travel insurance

If you’re airline falls short, travel insurance may help cover additional costs. With World Nomads’ Standard and Explorer Plans, you may be eligible for coverage in a range of situations, from delayed flights to lost baggage.

For example, the Explorer Plan may cover:

  • If an airline refused to provide meal or lodging vouchers, you may be able to claim for reimbursement of those expenses after a delay of 12 or more hours. The Explorer Plan allows for up to €200 (€50 each 12 hours, per person) for additional accommodation and meals, and up to €1,000 for additional transport.

Make delays work for you with SmartDelay

What is SmartDelay?

Turn a frustrating flight delay into an opportunity to relax with SmartDelay, exclusively for World Nomads policyholders. If your flight is delayed by more than 90 minutes, you’ll receive a LoungeKey™ pass, giving you access to a comfortable airport lounge.

What's excluded?

Travel Insurance for Nepal

What you need to know when visiting the roof of the world.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Nepal is a small country that packs a big punch. Home to the majestic Himalayas and Everest Base Camp trek, there’s no shortage of things to do and see. Before traveling to the Roof of the World, consider packing travel insurance.

What’s covered in Nepal

Depending on your country of residence and the plan you choose, our policies can protect you up to policy limits for benefits including:

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs. It’s important to note that all plans are different depending on your country of residence and the plan that you’ve selected and may require upgrades for cover to apply.

Why should I consider travel insurance for a trip to Nepal

Travel insurance could help if you land in Pokhara but your baggage doesn’t, if your trek is delayed due to extreme weather, or if you suffer altitude sickness and need to be evacuated.

Adventuring in Nepal

Our policies offer cover for injuries and accidents for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences whether you’re on jungle safari in Chitwan National Park or white-water rafting the Bhote Koshi. Be sure to specify the activities you intend to do when you purchase your policy, as you can’t add them afterwards.

Hiking in Nepal

Our policies offer cover for high altitude hiking, trekking and camping up to 6,000 metres including Base Camp and Annapurna. We can also cover medical evacuation if medically necessary. Keep in mind that you may require a policy upgrade to be covered.

Backpacking in Nepal

With plenty of affordable accommodation, delicious food and rich culture, Nepal is a backpacker's dream. Our policies may cover you if your passport is stolen whilst browsing Asan market, for travel disruption or if your trip is cancelled.

What to look out for when traveling around Nepal

Keep your valuables safe

Remember to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight when exploring Kathmandu and beyond. Our policies may cover theft if your valuables are stolen (depending on your country of residence and up to policy limits). We can also cover high-value items with an upgrade.

Staying healthy and safe in Nepal

If you get food poisoning from a dodgy dal or you’re injured while trekking, our policies can cover you for emergency medical treatment. We can even bring you home for treatment if required.

Travel disruptions in Nepal

Nepal's roads, flights, and weather can be unpredictable. If your trekking adventure is cancelled due to a natural catastrophe, or your flights are delayed due to an unforeseen event our policies can cover you.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. There are some things we can’t cover, including, but not limited to:

  • Trekking/camping over 6,000 metres in elevation, mountaineering, and ice climbing
  • Participation in any adventure sports activities where you don’t purchase the appropriate level upgrade, or where it is specifically excluded
  • Existing medical conditions
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to U.S. Department of State ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure
  • Unsupervised baggage or personal items
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs or acting illegally.

Always check the terms and conditions of your policy. If you’re not sure about anything or have any questions, contact us.
