India for British Nomads—Adventure, Spice & A Few Travel Smarts

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

British nomads have been falling under India’s spell for decades, and it’s easy to see (and smell) why. From the aromatic pull of street-side butter chicken to the age-old spice trails of Kerala, India is a sensory overload in the best way possible. Whether you’re chasing thrills in the Himalayas, riding camels through Rajasthan’s deserts, or stretching into sunrise yoga in Rishikesh, this country delivers an adventure experience like no other.

But let’s get one thing straight - India is incredible, but it’s not always easy. Between unpredictable transport, street food roulette, and the occasional monkey trying to steal your sunglasses, it pays to be prepared. Here’s everything you need to know before diving headfirst into India's chaos, beauty, and magic - from visas and vaccines to safety tips and why travel insurance should be on your research list.

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

From haggling in Delhi’s bustling bazaars to watching the sunrise over the Ganges, riding your moped through the bustling streets in Kolkata, or catching a glimpse of the wildlife in India’s famed sanctuaries, there’s no shortage of once-in-a-lifetime moments waiting for British nomads.

But no one wants their memories tainted for the wrong reasons – dealing with a broken leg in a foreign hospital while uninsured (for example) can seriously derail that trip of a lifetime. Rest assured, we’ve got travel insurance designed for the way you roam.

Our Standard and Explorer can offer cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Family coverage: Traveling with your crew? Both our Single Trip Annual Multi-Trip plans can cover two adults and up to six dependents under one policy (provided dependents are under 18 at the time of policy purchase).
  • Trip interruption and cancellation: Flights can be cancelled, trains can run late and monsoons can roll in. Our Trip Interruption Insurance (and SmartDelay) could be helpful in these unpredictable moments!
  • Medical emergencies –Snake bite? A tuk-tuk ride gone wrong? Our travel insurance for overseas emergency medical could cover you for up to £5,000,000 (Standard Plan) or £10,000,000 (Explorer Plan) and could be the most valuable asset in your backpack if things don’t go according to plan.
  • Non-medical emergencies - Caught a mild case of Delhi Belly but don’t need an emergency room? World Nomads offers access to Air Doctor, so you can connect with a doctor virtually or find one nearby - without the stress of navigating India’s healthcare system. Whether you need a prescription refill, quick medical advice, or treatment for minor issues, Air Doctor makes it easy to get the help you need and get back to exploring.
  • Adventure activities: World Nomads offers over 150+ activities, from white-water rafting in Rishikesh to scuba diving in Goa. If adventure is your thing, we’ve got you covered.
  • 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance: Stuck in a medical emergency? Our Emergency Medical Assistance Team is available 24/7, so you’re never alone, no matter where your adventure takes you.
  • Personal Belongings: While India’s warmth and hospitality are legendary, it’s still wise to stay alert - especially in crowded markets, train stations, and tourist hotspots where pickpockets are always on the lookout. World Nomads policies offer cover if the personal belongings you own and take with you on a trip are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having your luggage stolen click HERE to find out the steps you need to take.

Ready to chase the chaos? Grab your travel insurance quote here.

Dive into your policy details for the full scoop, and if anything's unclear, contact us.

Speaking of policies…don’t just skim over the policy wording – give it a good read. Understand exactly what’s covered (and what’s not) for your planned activities. Some activities might require you to flex some qualifications or licenses or team up with a professional guide. And remember, living on the edge might mean a slight uptick in your policy’s price (for obvious reasons).

Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) Policy

For British travellers who are always on the move, our Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) policy offers the freedom to explore India and beyond without the hassle of arranging new travel insurance for every trip.

Sticking around in India for a while? A Single Trip policy might be the better fit. Not sure which suits you best? Compare Annual Multi-Trip vs Single Trip Travel Insurance.

What’s not covered?

As you gear up for your Indian adventure, keep in mind that while World Nomads travel insurance has your back, it doesn’t cover everything. Here’s a breakdown of what’s outside our safety net:

  • Pushing adventure limits: Thinking of free solo climbing in the Himalayas? Not all heroic feats are covered. it is not in our list of covered activities or you skipped the adventure add-on, it’s out of bounds.
  • Ignoring medical advice: If you overlook your doctor’s recommendations or ignore guidance from our Emergency Medical Assistance Team, that one’s on you.
  • Unattended valuables: Left your camera on a café table in Jaipur or your backpack unzipped on a crowded train? If your valuables are stolen, lost, or damaged while unattended, they’re not covered.
  • Risky behaviour: Breaking the law, excessive drinking, or taking part in illegal activities? Your coverage doesn’t extend to reckless choices.
  • Cold feet? Decided India’s isn’t for you after all? A change of heart isn’t a covered event.

India travel insurance and safety tips

A riot of colours, flavours, and full-throttle experiences, India is as chaotic as it is captivating - and that’s precisely why British nomads have been drawn here for decades. But…for all the good, there’s a lengthy list of aspects you should be aware of before you touchdown:

  • India’s food is legendary, but let’s be honest - your stomach might not be ready for it. If you want to eat like a king without spending a week on the throne (aka toilet), make your food choices wisely. Go for busy stalls where locals eat (a high turnover means fresh food). Avoid anything that looks like it’s been sitting out for hours.
  • Tap water? Hard no. Only drink bottled, filtered, or boiled water - and watch out for ice cubes. Rule of thumb: if it’s not cooked or peeled, don’t risk it.
  • Pack Western medications for the inevitable. Even if you’re careful, a dodgy stomach can strike. Also, bring rehydration salts, Imodium, and a basic first-aid kit.
  • Get your jabs. Ensure you’re current on hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus. Malaria tablets might be needed in some regions - check with your GP before you go.
  • Public transport in India is an experience in itself. If you value your safety and sanity, avoid budget “non-AC” buses and opt for private or Volvo services instead. When taking taxis or rickshaws, always negotiate your fare before getting in. And if your driver suddenly claims that your destination is “closed” or “fully booked”, be firm - it’s often just a tactic to redirect you to a place where they’ll earn a commission.
  • You’ll need a visa before arrival - India doesn’t issue visas for UK citizens upon arrival. But don’t stress - the Indian e-Visa makes things easy.
  • India is generally safe, but tourists can be easy targets for scams. Stick to official currency exchanges and count your cash before leaving. Book guides through trusted sources—those "friendly locals" might just be leading you to overpriced shops. Pickpocketing is common in crowded markets and train stations, so keep valuables in a money belt or anti-theft bag. Here are some additional Tips for Traveling Around Safely in India.

Travel Insurance for Germany

From skiing in the Bavarian Alps to experiencing Berlin’s nightlife, learn how insurance for Germany could help Canadian travellers.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Germany? Storied forests, towering mountains in the Alps, fairytale castles like Neuschwanstein, charming towns such as Baden-Baden—famous for its spas— and wandering through festive Christmas markets with glühwein in hand, among other magical winter experiences, all come to mind for us. Of course, sloshing pints of beer at boisterous Oktoberfest celebrations, dancing your heart out at Berlin’s infamous clubs, summer techno festivals, and sampling local culinary specialties like sauerkraut, pretzels, and currywurst are not to be forgotten. Whatever your ideal trip looks like, Germany offers an eclectic art and music scene, natural beauty, and a diverse history.

Despite all the fun to be had in Germany, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians travelling there. International travel can be life changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote and purchase travel insurance for Germany before you set forth on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Germany?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like theft of your baggage or a missed connection due to inclement weather that grounds your flight, for example.

Travel insurance for Germany can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as rock climbing in Bavaria.

Our travel insurance plans also include important travel, medical, and security assistance services designed to provide you with guidance before and during your trip.

We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures.

Travel insurance for activities in Germany

Whether you’re planning to ski or snowboard in the Alps or take a long-distance hike through the Saxon Switzerland forest, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Germany. Rock climbing the crags of Frankenjura, kayaking on Bavaria’s mountain rivers and lakes, and cycling through the region of Rhoen are all covered under travel insurance for Germany.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. You must list all your activities out when purchasing the plan—and if something happens while you are participating in an activity you didn’t list on your plan, then you won’t be covered. For example, if you go hiking while on your trip and you didn’t list that activity out when making your plan purchase, you won’t be covered if something were to happen on the trail. You may want to overshoot and list out all possible activities you may do, just in case.

Also keep in mind that you will be covered under the base plan to participate in various adventure sports, activities, volunteer, and work experiences, shown as Level 1, under both of our Standard and Explorer Plans. To have coverage for adventurous sports, work, and activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3, you will need to upgrade your adventure sports coverage and pay an extra premium at the time you purchase your policy.

Note: Special conditions and exclusions may apply to while taking part in certain sports and activities. For the full policy terms and conditions please review the policy wording.

Remember, travel insurance does not cover everything – for example, travel insurance will note cover you for any losses or expenses if you are intoxicated.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Germany

Whether you have an accident while tackling the Alpspitz Ferrata or sustain an injury while surfing the Eisbach River in Munich, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Germany.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Germany, including assisting you with language barriers and finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost luggage in Germany

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you arrive in Munich but your bag packed with your winter gear for your ski vacation didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.  If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens and your bag is missing for 12 hours or more, your travel insurance for Germany could still reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, until you and your bag are reunited.

While Germany is generally considered safe, pickpocketing or theft can happen anywhere. It’s important to be mindful of your belongings on crowded metros and busy markets. If your stuff is stolen from under your nose, your travel insurance plan could also reimburse you for what was lost (deprecation and plan limits will apply). When picking a plan, you may want to consider the amount of baggage coverage available and make sure you are comfortable with the maximum amount. The Standard and Explorer plans each have different limits.

In a crisis, our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 for referrals or locations of nearby hospitals, medical providers or pharmacies. The team can also help with translation services during an emergency.

Road safety on the Autobahn and in general

You may be interested in taking Germany’s legendary Fairy Tale Route ("Märchenstraße"), which stretches for 600 kms from the town of Hanau in Central Germany all the way up to Bremen on the North Sea, or simply cruising between different German cities. If you’re planning a long road trip on the Autobahn, there are some rules of the road to be aware of. Drivers can go as fast as they want in de-restricted sections of the highway, although this doesn’t necessarily mean you should drive as fast as you want. The German government recommends a speed of about 130kph. World Nomads travel insurance includes emergency medical coverage that could assist you if you are injured in an accident. You will want to make sure to purchase car rental insurance separately, as this is not covered

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Germany

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses.

Trip cancellation and Trip interruption coverage can help protect you in case of emergencies before your leave, or back home in Canada after you’ve departed. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused, pre-paid travel expenses (up to plan limits) that you can no longer use.

Tips for travelling to Germany from Canada

As much as you may have planned each detail of your German adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Germany before you leave. Up-to-date warnings— including weather advisories and political situations—will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens. Learning a few German words and phrases will also go a long way!

Finally, you may also want to read up on some local tips and destination inspiration for non-touristy spots to check out in Germany. This way you can experience the lesser-known side of this European country rich in history, cultural festivities, and mountains.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, of if you have questions, just ask us.

Travel insurance when visiting the United Kingdom

Everything European Travellers Should Know for a Smooth British Getaway

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

The United Kingdom, a land where ancient history meets modern charm. You could be tracing the footsteps of literary greats in the Lake District or plunging 160 feet toward the River Tees on a bungee jump, before the cord pulls you back to reality. The United Kingdom truly offers something for every European nomad. Whether your flavour is the buzzing urban streets of London or skydiving over Salisbury Plain, mishaps can happen - having travel insurance as your trusty travel sidekick could be a brilliant idea.

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

With World Nomads, you can select either the Standard Plan for basic travel protection or the Explorer Plan for broader coverage.

Both plans offer coverage for:

Overseas emergency medical: Whether it’s a tumble on a Welsh mountain or a sudden fever in London, World Nomads has your back (literally). Our coverage includes up to €5,000,000 on the Standard Plan and €10,000,000 on the Explorer Plan for emergency medical treatment such as surgery, hospital charges, outpatient care, prescribed medicines, and even physiotherapy when required in a hospital setting (as specified in the policy wordings).

Baggage Protection: Lost your bag in the hustle of Heathrow or had your gear swiped in a packed London Tube station? It happens. World Nomads travel insurance covers European travellers for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage up to policy limits. The Standard Plan provides up to €1,500 in total coverage, while the Explorer Plan offers a more generous limit of €3,000. Baggage delay coverage starts at 24+ hours.

24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance: Emergencies don’t wait, and neither do we. World Nomads’ 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team is on standby to help connect European travellers to medical care, overcome language barriers, or coordinate an urgent evacuation.

Looking for a traveller insurance quote? You can grab one online here.

What should I look out for when travelling to the United Kingdom?

It’s no surprise that Europeans are drawn to the United Kingdom - its constant buzz of excitement pulls thrill-seeking travellers in from all over. But Mother Nature has a way of showing her mood swings, with sudden rainstorms and gusty winds always ready to make an entrance. Travel disruptions can be a real pain, especially when navigating busy transport hubs like Heathrow or London Euston. Thankfully, World Nomads offers cover for unexpected delays and cancellations. So, whether it’s unpredictable weather, strikes, or missed connections throwing off your plans, you can recover non-refundable costs and keep your adventure on track.

SmartDelay™ – the bright side of a flight delay

Look, we know from experience that flight delays are frustrating. But we also know that food makes frustrations a little less stressful. Right? If your flight is held up, we’ll take the edge off by giving you access to the airport lounge, with complimentary drinks and snacks. Please remember to register your flight details at least 24 hours before departure to avail of the service.

Travellers tip: The United Kingdom’s major cities, like London, can have busy rush hours, so consider travelling outside peak times or using apps to navigate public transport efficiently.

What are the benefits of World Nomads travel insurance when travelling in the United Kingdom?

Cover for Activities and Sports in The United The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom ’s landscapes are made for adventure, and we cover 150+ sports and activities to match. Planning to hike the dramatic trails of the Lake District, or cycle through the rugged Scottish Highlands? We’ve got you covered (up to policy limits, of course). Air Doctor powered by World Nomads

Left home without your prescription? No worries. With Air Doctor, you can connect with a doctor anywhere in the world for basic healthcare needs. Instead of waiting hours in an Emergency Room, you can have your prescription sent directly to a local chemist for pickup or get treated for non-urgent issues quickly and conveniently. That way, you can get on with exploring the United Kingdom.

Travellers tip: most places in the United Kingdom, from public transport to cafés, accept contactless card payments or mobile wallets – it's an easy way to pay and often quicker than cash. Just make sure you notify your bank before you leave the EU.

What's not covered

While we’ve got you covered for many adventures, travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions: sorry, those aren’t covered.
  • Unattended belongings: if you leave your gear in a public or unsecured spot, we’re not liable.
  • High-risk activities: planning something wild not listed in your policy? You’re on your own.
  • Alcohol and drugs: any mishaps while under the influence won’t be covered.
  • Unlawful acts: if your claim comes from something illegal or reckless, you’re out of luck.

This is not a complete list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy for terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads

Protecting Europeans’ tech gear on the go

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Picture this: you’re a European digital nomad soaking up the sun in Lisbon while wrapping up a project. But then, the unexpected strikes—your phone’s stolen, or you come down with a fever. Suddenly, your carefree work-travel balance is thrown off. This may just be the moment you’re grateful for packing the travel insurance in with all your travel essentials.

Why should I consider travel insurance when travelling as a digital nomad?

With an unpredictable lifestyle comes, well…unpredictability. As a digital nomad, your tech gear and health are everything, and an unexpected hiccup ruins more than your day—it affects your work. No one wants that. Or perhaps your job involves travelling between Schengen countries? Even a short trip from Paris to Madrid can come with unexpected issues. With the right digital nomad insurance cover, Europeans can work and wander the world without worrying about what could go wrong.

Does travel insurance for digital nomads cover my tech?

As a digital nomad from the EU, your tech gear is more than just equipment; it's your livelihood. Having your lappy stolen at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport while waiting for your connection, or your phone damaged in an unexpected storm at the Algarve in Portugal can throw your entire routine into chaos. Our Standard and Explorer policies may cover the reimbursement of your devices if they’re stolen, lost, or damaged while under your supervision.

Our coverage extends to a wide range of gadgets and valuables, including:

  • Mobile phones
  • Photographic equipment
  • Binoculars, telescopes
  • Computers and accessories (like laptops and gaming gear)
  • Tablets and e-readers
  • Audio equipment (like headphones and speakers)
  • Drones and GPS devices

Travellers tip: Always keep your receipts—hard copies or digital—for any gadgets you buy, whether before or during your travels. These can be essential if you need to make a claim. And remember to back up important travel documents, ID, and other details for extra security.

What are the benefits of World Nomads travel insurance when working abroad?

Medical Coverage and Emergency Medical Assistance

From hiking mishaps in the Austrian Alps to a bad case of food poisoning in Istanbul, medical emergencies can strike European digital nomads at the worst times. World Nomads travel insurance can cover overseas medical expenses, hospital stays, and emergency repatriation if required. With 24/7 emergency medical assistance, you’ll get the support you need, no matter where your adventures take you.

Cover for more than 150 sports and activities

Work hard, play harder—that’s the motto for any European adventure-loving digital nomad. With mountains to climb, rivers to kayak, and waves to surf, World Nomads understands you don’t want to limit your travels to just working, which is why we offer coverage for more than 150 sports and activities. Just make sure you’re aware of any specific coverage needs for high-adrenaline sports in your chosen destination.

Smart Delay

No one likes to hear the words ‘flight delay,’ especially when you’re already juggling work commitments and travel plans. Thankfully, Smart Delay by World Nomads turns that frustration into a little luxury. If your flight is delayed by 90 minutes or more, we’ll send you a LoungeKey™ pass, giving you access to over 1,500 airport lounges. It’s the perfect way to stay productive or simply relax while waiting. Ensure that before you travel (at least 24 hours), you register your flight with SmartDelay to avail of the service.

Travellers tip: Cyberattacks and identity theft are real threats when you’re on the move. Keep your data safe: use strong passwords, encrypt your laptop, and install antivirus software, skip public Wi-Fi where you can.

For more digital nomad tips, check out our article, 6 Travel Tips for Digital Nomads. Or if you’re ready to pack the gear and go, get a quote today and make that digital nomad dream a reality.

What's not covered by travel insurance for digital nomads?

Sorry, but even the best travel insurance has its limits. Here’s some examples of what’s not on the list:

  • Considering leaving your laptop unattended while swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Croatian coast? If it goes missing, that one’s on you.
  • Device malfunction or wear and tear? That’s a conversation for your manufacturer, not your travel insurer.
  • Placing your gadgets in checked luggage? If they’re damaged or stolen, they won’t be covered.
  • No receipt or record of ownership for your items? We can’t reimburse you without it.
  • Fail to report stolen or lost items to local authorities or venue management? We won’t be able to process your claim.

This is not a complete list of what's covered and not covered. Other terms, conditions and exclusions apply. Please read your Policy Wording carefully. If you’re unsure if something is covered or how to claim, contact us, and we’ll let you know.

Bag snatched in Latvia.

It was my final day in Riga, Latvia. In my small bag I keep all my valuables, because hostels can't always be reliable with safekeeping. It contained my new GoPro, Iphone, digital camera, laptop and hard drive, plus my emergency money (200 euros). I planned on using my cameras and computer for editing later that afternoon. The coast was amazing and, as it got late, I decided to take the train back to Riga city. As I was getting off the train, down the vertical steep steps, I had my bag snatched off my shoulder. In seconds, the doors closed and the train pulled off. Telling authorities on the platforms immediately, they could not assist and referred me straight to the police. Feeling helpless, I went to the police where I was kept for hours, because of English barriers and translations of documents. I walked out just after midnight with my report. A day trip I won't forget soon.

Why consider travel insurance for Vietnam?

Travel insurance provides coverage for unexpected events that can disrupt your trip. From trip cancellations due to unexpected events, to assistance if your passport is stolen in Hoi An, World Nomads travel insurance can help if things don’t go quite right on your Vietnam trip.

Imagine hiking the Fansipan mountain and you trip and injure yourself, requiring a local hospital transfer or even medical evacuation. Or picture landing in Hanoi, only to discover your luggage didn’t make the journey. We may help cover the cost of replacing your essentials so you don’t miss out on exploring the bustling Old Quarter.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. There are some things that we simply do not cover. These include:

  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording, or one that's offered by World Nomads, but you haven't paid the required additional premium.
  • Not following your treating doctor’s directions and/or those of our Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Existing medical conditions.
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unguarded.
  • Incidents resulting from reckless behaviour.
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs or acting illegally.
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

Always check the terms and conditions of your policy. If you’re not sure about something or have any questions, contact us.

Handy tips when travelling in Vietnam

  1. Stay safe on scooters

Our policies offer cover for cover riding on scooters and motorbikes as long as you always wear a helmet, you have a valid license for the same type of vehicle in Australia and as required in Vietnam, and you follow local laws. If you’re a passenger, make sure the driver has a valid license and you’re both wearing helmets. Check out our detailed guide on motorbiking in Vietnam.

  1. Best time to visit Vietnam

Vietnam is a wonderful destination to visit year-round. July and August are the best time for beach trips, December to March brings cooler temperatures perfect for bustling city visits, and the low season allows a more timid look at this vibrant country.

  1. How to avoid gastro

It’s advisable to avoid drinking tap water while in Vietnam. Water can be contaminated and can result in gastrointestinal upset and other more serious disease such as hepatitis A and typhoid. It’s best to avoid raw fruits and vegetables with the skin on, as well as ice cubes in your drinks.

  1. Be aware of petty crime

While Vietnam is generally a safe place to travel, low level crime does exist.

As with many other destinations petty crime remains an issue in Vietnam. Stay alert and keep your belongings close.

  1. We’re here to help 24/7

If you experience an emergency and need help while travelling in Vietnam, our multi-lingual team is here to help 24/7. We can direct you to the nearest hospital, organise medical transport and even consult with your family back home.

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of cover in the PDS for the full details on what’s not covered as well as the terms, conditions, limitation and exclusions. If you are unsure of anything, please contact us for help.

Travel Insurance when sailing

Don’t let an accident take the wind out of your sails.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For UK adventurers drawn to the sea's call, the promise of slicing through the waves along the storied coasts of the French Riviera or exploring distant archipelagos is an alluring one. Before you embark, consider anchoring your trip with travel insurance. Packing World Nomads travel insurance could ensure you're prepared; whether you’re dealing with a sprained wrist from handling the sails or facing unexpected stormy weather.

Should I consider travel insurance when undertaking sailing?

Let's set sail with realism: while we're not predicting rough waters, the unpredictable nature of sailing brings inherent risks. Imagine dealing with a sudden storm or a navigational mishap in unfamiliar waters – the challenges are magnified far from home. Coupling these potential scenarios with the complexities of international maritime response, costs can skyrocket quickly. Whether it’s a minor accident or a major emergency, having travel insurance helps you prepare for whatever the sea might throw your way.

Traveller tip #1: Verify that your UK boating and, if applicable, driving licences are valid in the destinations you plan to visit. Some countries may require international permits or specific local licenses.

What’s covered for sailing?

From medical emergencies to lost gear overboard, ensure your sailing journey is memorable for all the right reasons. Let's make your nautical dreams a safe reality—hoist the sails, but anchor your risks first!

Under our Standard and Explorer plans, Level 1 coverage automatically includes sailing in inland or coastal waters and non-manual work related to your sailing adventures. Just make sure you’re guided by a certified professional or possess the necessary UK qualifications to manage the sailboat yourself.

If your nautical aspirations push you beyond coastal waters, consider upgrading to Level 2 coverage. There’s still rules though – you need to stay within 60 miles of a safe haven, and personal liability under Section 11 of the policy wording is not covered.

Here are a few more eventualities typically covered in World Nomads plans for inland sailing and coastal waters:

Emergency medical assistance

Even without wet decks and choppy seas, you could find yourself with a medical emergency, be it an ankle sprain or a collarbone fracture. Our coverage may help cover everything from the services of a physician to ambulance services and x-rays in the case of an accident or injury at sea or on shore. World Nomads policy holders also have access to 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team. The Standard Plan offers cover of up to £5,000,000 for emergency medical expenses and medical repatriation, and £10,000,000 on the Explorer Plan. Additional accommodation and travelling expenses are also included under both the Standard and Explorer plan.

Evacuation

Most of our earth is covered in water... which means you have plenty of places to sail but could easily hit a snag in a far-flung destination. Subject to approval of or 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team, your World Nomads policy may transport you by air ambulance to get treatment at an appropriate medical facility if deemed medically necessary.

Baggage & Gear protection

Maybe your backpack slipped off the sopping wet stern, or your windbreaker got stolen right off the port. Our gear coverage can help replace your stuff, up to its actual cash value at the time of the loss. World Nomads provides baggage protection for lost or stolen items of up to £3,000 with the Explorer Plan and £1,500 with the Standard Plan. For high-value gear, consider upgrading for coverage up to £750 per item on the Explorer Plan and £400 per item on the Standard Plan, with maximum upgrade limits of £2,250 and £1,200 respectively.

Trip Disruption

Say a physician advises you not to travel until your health improves, or a hurricane at your destination renders your chartered course and your pre-sail accommodation totally unusable, you may be able to recoup some of your pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses... handy when you’re ready to re-book the adventure. The Standard Plan provides up to £3,000 for trip cancelation and £5,000 under the Explorer Plan. These limits also apply if you have to cut your trip short.

Traveller tip #2: Always check weather and maritime forecasts before sailing, and plan your route with safe havens. Inform someone onshore of your itinerary. No matter your experience, review local navigation rules, tides, and hazards. Consider a refresher course if needed.

World Nomads water sports coverage

Besides sailing, World Nomads can offer cover for other water-based activities on island and coastal waters, such as:

  • Yachting
  • Parasailing
  • Sailboarding
  • Cruising
  • Catamaran sailing
  • Hydro foiling
  • Hydrospeeding
  • Water skiing
  • Barefoot water skiing
  • Kiteboarding (on land or water)
  • Kayaking
  • Sea Kayaking
  • Wakeboarding
  • Wake skating
  • Scuba diving

For UK travellers, World Nomads extends its safety net far beyond the deck, offering coverage for over 150+ sports and activities. Whether you’re rockclimbing or rollerblading, check our comprehensive list of activities to ensure your adventure is covered.

What’s not covered?

Not every day is smooth sailing, but if you check the weather forecast, you can avoid some choppy waters. The same is true for travel insurance: if you know what’s excluded beforehand, you’ll be better equipped to navigate any unexpected losses. And sorry, we may not be able to cover you for:

  • Sailing beyond the allowed distance from a safe haven or shore (60 miles for Brits)
  • Racing and/or professional sailing
  • Boat rental damage or loss
  • Search-and-rescue missions
  • Extreme sport sailing
  • Losses that come from knowingly exposing yourself to needless risk
  • Fraudulent and criminal acts
  • Any claims resulting in the violation of local laws
  • Any losses related to non-compliance with a license, contract or permit
  • Sports equipment such as scuba, snorkel and scuba gear if it’s damaged while in-use

In addition to life jackets, floatation devices and other safety gear, be sure to BYO sunscreen. For more travel info, read our ExploreTravel Safety, and Responsible Travel articles.

Traveller tip #3: Familiarize yourself with the details of your travel insurance policy to understand what activities are covered and any applicable conditions or exclusions.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for sailing. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • Should I consider insurance to sail while overseas?
Without the right cover, you could be setting sail for disaster. Consider choosing travel insurance that covers you for all the water-based adventures you plan to enjoy overseas, even sailing. Travel Insurance when horse riding

Make your horse riding adventure a memorable one for all the right reasons

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Ready to rein in some adventure? Whether you're planning to trot through the rolling vineyards of France or gallop along the sunlit shores of Spain, World Nomads has your back. Our travel insurance caters to UK globetrotters eager to immerse themselves in leisurely rides.

Why should I consider travel insurance for horse riding?

Dreaming of galloping across the sandy beaches of Portugal or exploring the rugged trails of South America on horseback? Remember, while horse riding can put the epic into your travel experience, it also brings risks—risks that our travel insurance is designed to address.

From unexpected falls to equipment loss, we’re here to ensure your ride remains memorable for the right reasons. World Nomads provides tailored coverage for leisurely horse-riding activities.

Note:  Before you saddle up, review our plans to select the right coverage level for your itinerary and ensure your chosen activities are included. Stay protected and focused on the joy of riding, not the potential pitfalls.

Horse riding can be a rewarding and exciting experience. If it’s your first time horse riding, you might want to keep the following handy tips in mind:

  • Have the right gear: Before saddling up, thoroughly inspect your horse-riding gear. Ensure your helmet fits snugly and your footwear is appropriate for riding to avoid any mishaps.
  • It pays to be prepared: check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your riding instructor (if it’s a group ride) – if they’re not good then reconsider if it’s a smart move to go.
  • Keep an eye on your gear: don’t leave your expensive horse-riding gear or any other baggage unattended – those 'I spaced out” moments might not qualify for coverage.
  • Proof of purchase: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases.
  • Saddle up properly: make sure you and your children’s saddles are fitted properly. If the saddle is the wrong size, you or your child could be more likely to slip out of it and fall and it could end up being a costly mistake.
  • Ask for the right horse: If it’s your first time, ask for a horse that matches your skill level—typically a calm, experienced horse.

Check your policy wording carefully as terms and conditions and special exclusions may apply for horse riding activities.

What's covered

At World Nomads, we've got two travel insurance plans to suit your style. Go for the Standard Plan for the essentials, or level up with the Explorer Plan if you’re after broader coverage and higher limits.

  • Trip cancellation or disruption: Things happen – and sometimes out best laid plans mice (and men) go awry. The Explorer Plan covers cancellations up to £5,000, while the Standard Plan covers up to £3,000. These figures also apply if you are forced to cut your trip short. Please note events must be unexpected and unforeseen.
  • Baggage delays and personal belongings: if you arrive at your destination but your baggage doesn’t, our policies cover baggage delays that of 24 hours or more.
  • Emergency medical: horse-riding and fresh air can be great for the body and soul, but not if it you’re on the wrong end of a feisty hoof and require medical assistance. Emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an accident or injury that results in you going to hospital.
  • Evacuation cover: your horse-riding adventure may be far away from medical facilities. With our cover, you can get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from us. If your injuries are worse than first thought, you could be repatriated back to the UK if it's medically necessary.
  • Natural catastrophe: If you find yourself amid a natural disaster or your destination is affected by extreme weather, we can offer coverage if you can’t use your booked accommodation or need to move to a safer location.

Keep in mind that benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions apply, so be sure to read your policy wording carefully. If you have any questions about your cover, contact us.

Traveller tip: always carry water, especially on longer rides. Staying hydrated is crucial to maintain your concentration and overall health during the journey.

Coverage for more than 150+ activities, sports, and experiences

At World Nomads, we know that adventurous activities go hand-in-hand with travelling abroad. That’s why World Nomads offers cover for 150+ adventure activities, sports, and experiences, everything from hot-air ballooning, rafting, hiking, and of course – horse riding.

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific activity plans.

If your favourite sport is not on the list get in touch with our Customer Assistance Team and they will let you know if we cover it. Be aware that an upgrade for certain activities and sports may be required.

Traveller tip: if things go wrong during your horse-riding trip and you intend to make a claim, please be aware that, in most cases, a claim will require that you prove you acted responsibly, used the recommended safety clothing and equipment, and were guided by a professional, qualified, and licensed guide, instructor, or operator.

What's not covered

While there are several things, we can offer coverage for, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to the United Kingdom.
  • Losses arising from unattended baggage or personal items.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Travel insurance when cycling

Take life by the handlebars and check out World Nomads travel insurance plans when cycling on your next overseas adventure.

  • As featured in:

Ready to swap the UK drizzle for sunnier cycles abroad? Whether you dream of dodging sheep in New Zealand's trails or weaving through Tuscany's vineyards, consider packing World Nomads travel insurance with your helmet. It could be your backup plan for when those quaint cobbled streets throw a spoke in your wheel, covering everything from scrapped knees to swiped gear. Gear up, get insured, and go!

How you may benefit from World Nomads travel insurance cover

Hitting the road on two wheels is exhilarating, but every turn brings the unknown – especially abroad. While cycling lets you connect with landscapes and cultures intimately, it also exposes you to risks not present back home. From navigating unfamiliar traffic rules and road conditions to potential mishaps like a fall or a collision with a vehicle, the physical risks are real. And then there's theft – bicycles are a popular target.

When choosing World Nomads products, you’ll have access to two simple and flexible plans – Standard and Explorer. We offer cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Baggage & Gear protection: With our travel insurance, whether it’s the Standard or Explorer plan, you're protected. If your baggage is delayed for more than 24 hours, we cover the cost of essential items. And if your prized cycling gear is lost or stolen, we’re here to help cover replacement costs. For high-value gear, consider upgrading for coverage up to £750 per item on the Explorer Plan and £400 per item on the Standard Plan, with maximum upgrade limits of £2,250 and £1,200 respectively.
  • Emergency overseas medical: cycling through the Alps and taking in the fresh air can be great for the body and the mind, but not if it ends up in a bad injury. Emergency medical coverage will come in handy in the case of an accident, illness or injury.
  • Evacuation: your cycling route may be far away from medical facilities. With our cover, you can get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from World Nomads. Note, there is no cover for search and rescue expenses.
  • Trip disruption: has a sick or injured travelling companion put a stop to your cycling abroad? You may be able to recover your unused, prepaid travel expenses.
  • 24-hour emergency medical assistance: if you find yourself in need of urgent medical help, it’s not always easy to find help. World Nomads provides 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance.

Traveller tip: always carry enough water, especially in hot climates, and use sunscreen and sunglasses to protect against sunburn and glare.

What’s covered for cycling?

Under both of World Nomads plans – Standard and Explorer – you may be automatically covered. However you may need to upgrade and pay an additional premium depending on the type of cycling activity you'll be doing. United Kingdom travellers could be covered for the following cycling activities:

  1. Cycling (incidental to the trip): level 1 activity
  2. Cycling (on an organised tour): Level 2 activity – upgrade required
  3. Cycling (independent cycle touring): level 3 activity - upgrade required

Note: all our plans are different and may require an upgrade to include cycling at certain altitude. In some instances, you must be with a professional, qualified and licensed cycling guide, instructor or operator. Terms and conditions, limits and exclusions, apply. Read your policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and cycling option for your trip.

For more information on cycling and mountain biking coverage check out our Help Centre article, ‘Am I covered if I'm cycling or mountain biking?’ in the Help Centre which explains what you need to know to be adequately covered. Choose your “for European residents” and you’ll access the most up to date information.

Traveller tip: keep your essential documents (passport, travel insurance details, and emergency contacts) secure in a waterproof pouch.

Know where you’re going and what to do if the unexpected happens

Before you hit the road with your bike, helmet and gear, it pays to arm yourself with these cycling tips for a safer trip:

  • Include all countries you’re visiting or traveling through on your policy: as well as all the adventure activities you’re planning to do or participate in. With World Nomads you’ll have a choice of more than 150+ activities, sports and experiences to choose from.
  • Check you have all your paperwork: you’ll need to have all the appropriate paperwork, these may include any required vaccinations, visitor permits if you plan to visit any national parks, and special tourist visas for the countries you’ll be visiting,
  • Be responsible when choosing a cycling destination or activity: does the cycling tour your planning suit your experience level? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination? Have you got a ‘fit for travel’ thumbs up from your doctor to take on the mountains and specific altitudes? Do you need to use an accredited tour provider or operator? Can our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team reach you if you get into trouble?
  • Wear a helmet and visible clothing: this should be a no brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning, as in many countries around the world, the locals don’t wear helmets when cycling. Another no brainer is if you’re planning to ride at night, you should have high vis clothing on yourself, your bike, or both to make sure other riders and vehicles see you.
  • Proof of purchase: remember that any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you intend to make a claim.

Travel insurance tip: World Nomads provides travel insurance for more than 150+ activities, sports and experiences. While this list might seem exhaustive, it doesn’t cover everything. That’s why you shouldn’t take for granted that your preferred activities will be covered. You can’t upgrade your level of cover mid-way through your holiday, so do consider this wisely.

What's not covered?

Some things we may not cover include:

  • Costs incurred if you refuse to be repatriated after being declared medically unfit to continue your trip.
  • Costs incurred if you ignore the advice of your doctor or our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team.
  • Damage to any sporting equipment while in use; loss, damage or theft of any sporting equipment left unattended.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source, e.g., transport carriers or accommodation providers
  • Unattended baggage or personal items
  • Participating or training in activity or sport at a professional level
  • Any search or rescue operations as explained in the policy wording
  • Misuse or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Fraudulent or criminal acts.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Traveller tip: keep a list of local emergency contacts, including medical facilities and the local police, on your person when cycling – just in case.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for cycling. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • Can I upgrade my cycling coverage mid-trip?
Good news is, if you already have World Nomads travel insurance, all our plans cover incidental cycling adventures (T&Cs apply). However, if you’re planning some independent cycling touring, you will need to plan and purchase an appropriate activity cover and pay an additional premium from the beginning, as you cannot upgrade mid-trip.

Travel Insurance for Singapore

From exploring Gardens by the Bay to eating your way through Chinatown, learn how travel insurance for Singapore could help Canadian travellers.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Singapore? The futuristic gardens at Gardens by the Bay, the sweeping views from the Marina Bay Sands Skypark, and the tropical gardens of spots like Bukit Timah Nature Reserve come to mind for us.

The tiny city-state of Singapore has been a major trading hub for more than 700 years, and the relics from the millions who have passed through make it a fascinating place for foodies and history buffs. Dig into the multicultural cuisine and tasty street food in Chinatown, explore the colorful streets and Hindu temples of Little India, and learn about the Malay influences in Kampong Glam. Whether you’re using it as a stopover before travelling further into Southeast Asia or are dedicating your entire vacation to Singapore, the country offers an exciting mix of lush nature, modern city-life, and diverse culture in a compact space.

As beautiful and fun as Singapore is, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians travelling there. International travel can be life changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote and purchase travel insurance for Singapore before you set forth on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Singapore?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like theft of your baggage or a missed connection due to inclement weather that grounds your flight, for example.

Travel insurance for Singapore can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as paddle boarding at Sentosa Island.

Our travel insurance plans also include important travel, medical, and security assistance services designed to provide you with guidance before and during your trip.

We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures.

Travel insurance for activities in Singapore

Whether you’re planning to sail around Marina Bay Sands or hike the coast-to-coast trail on the island, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Singapore.

Kayaking through mangroves in Pulau Ubin, spending a day enjoying the waterslides at Adventure Cove Water Park, and cycling around the island’s urban and coastal routes are all covered under travel insurance for Singapore.

Also keep in mind that you will be covered under the base plan to participate in various adventure sports, activities, volunteer, and work experiences, shown as Level 1, under both our Standard and Explorer Plans. To have coverage for adventures sports, work and activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3, you will need to upgrade your adventure sports coverage and pay an extra premium at the time you purchase your policy.

Note: Special conditions and exclusions may apply to while taking part in certain sports and activities. For the full policy terms and conditions please review the policy wording.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Singapore

If you have an accident and injure yourself while windsurfing or jet skiing in East Coast Park, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Singapore.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you must do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible or have someone call on your behalf.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Singapore, including assisting you with finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost luggage in Singapore

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you land in Changi but your bag—packed with your new swimsuit and favorite sundress for your tropical holiday—never showed up on the carrousel? The first step is to contact the airline.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens and your bag is delayed for more than 12 hours or more, your travel insurance for Singapore may reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, until you and your bag are reunited.

Singapore is generally considered very safe and has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. However, pickpocketing or theft can happen anywhere, and it is important to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded tourist areas or public transportation.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Singapore

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses should an unforeseen (and covered) event happen.

Tips for travelling to Singapore from Canada

As much as you may have planned each detail of your Singaporean adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Singapore before you leave. Up-to-date warnings— including weather advisories and political situations—will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

While English is widely spoken, know that as a multicultural country, several languages are spoken including Chinese, Malay, and Tamil.

Singapore is known for having strict rules, from a ban on chewing gum and on smoking in public places, to strict laws against littering and a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. Breaking the law can result in a minor fine or a more severe punishment. Read up on these laws beforehand so you can respect the local culture, avoid any unnecessary obstacles, and relax during your vacation! Travel insurance won’t cover you if you are involved in a criminal act.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, of if you have questions, just ask us
