From sailing around the Turquoise Coast to visiting the Grand Bazaar and Blue Mosque in Istanbul, learn how insurance for Turkey could help Canadian travellers.
As featured in:
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Turkey? Riding the ferry along the Bosporus while watching Istanbul’s skyline pass by, markets filled with antiques and carpets, the dreamy blue waters along the Turquoise Coast, and hot air balloons floating over the ancient caves of Cappadocia all come to mind for us.
Of course, streetside kebab stands, honey-soaked baklava, a fresh pot of Turkish coffee, relaxing treatments in hammams, landscapes dotted with olive trees and vineyards, busy markets selling spices, nuts, and fruit, and experiencing Muslim traditions during Ramadan are all part of the allure as well. Whether you want to sun and swim in coastal towns or visit during winter to beat the crowds while you’re busy exploring ancient ruins, your Turkish adventure is sure to be unforgettable. This country straddling two continents is steeped in history and brimming with natural scenery, grand architecture, and a flavorful cuisine.
As captivating as Turkey is, you can imagine we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians travelling there. International travel can be life-changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote and purchase travel insurance for Turkey before you set forth on your journey.
World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like theft of your baggage or a missed connection due to inclement weather that grounds your flight, for example.
Travel insurance for Turkey can also protect you against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as kiteboarding in Bodrum.
Our travel insurance plans also include important travel, medical, and security assistance services designed to provide you with guidance before and during your trip.
We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures.
Whether you’re planning to go on a multi-day trek along southwestern Turkey’s Lycian Way or sailing around the islands near Göcek, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Turkey. Taking a hot air balloon ride over the rock formations of Cappadocia, skiing in Uludag, kayaking to the sunken city in Kekova National Park, and cycling along the historic Eurasian Road are all covered under travel insurance for Turkey.
It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. You must list all your activities out when purchasing the plan—and if something happens while you are participating in an activity you didn’t list on your plan, then you won’t be covered. For example, if you go hiking while on your trip and you didn’t list that activity out when making your plan purchase, you won’t be covered if something were to happen on the trail. You may want to overshoot and list out all possible activities you may do, just in case.
Also keep in mind that you will be covered under the base plan to participate in various adventure sports, activities, volunteer, and work experiences, shown as Level 1, under both of our Standard and Explorer Plans. To have coverage for adventures sports, work, and activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3, you will need to upgrade your adventure sports coverage and pay an extra premium when you purchase your policy.
Note: Special conditions and exclusions may apply to while taking part in certain sports and activities. For the full policy terms and conditions please review the policy wording.
Whether you have an accident while rock climbing in Antalya or end of with a serious bout of food poisoning, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Turkey.
While water is technically safe to drink from the tap in Turkey, it is common to drink bottled water instead. The water is heavily chlorinated and not particularly pleasant tasting. Food poisoning is also something that can happen, especially when it comes to street food. Use common sense when you’re choosing where to eat. Those 3am street mussels or wet burgers in Taksim Square after a rowdy night out might seem like a great idea at the time, but you might be end up regretting your decision later.
In a medical emergency, the first thing you must do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible or have someone contact them on your behalf.
The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Turkey, including assisting you with language barriers and finding the best places to seek medical treatment.
Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you land in Istanbul, but your bag packed with your favorite dresses and shoes for your vacation didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.
If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens and your bag is delayed for 12 hours or more, your travel insurance for Turkey could still reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, until you and your bag are reunited.
While Turkey is generally quite safe and pickpocketing isn’t as common as in other major European cities, bag snatching and pickpocketing can still happen. It’s important to be especially vigilant in crowded tourist spots, like the Grand Bazaar, and on busy trams. Be mindful for scammers at the ferry terminals in Istanbul who might tell you that the ticket machine is broken and offer to buy a ticket for you—and then charge you far above the ticket price.
If your stuff is stolen from under your nose, your travel insurance plan could also reimburse you for what was lost (deprecation and plan limits will apply). When picking a plan, you may want to consider the amount of baggage coverage available and make sure you are comfortable with the maximum amount. The Standard and Explorer plans each have different limits.
Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip
cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses.
Trip cancellation and Trip interruption coverage can help protect you in case of emergencies before your leave, or back home in Canada after you’ve departed. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused, pre-paid travel expenses (up to plan limits) that you can no longer use.
Travel insurance for Turkey can also help you in the case of unexpected circumstances while on your trip, such as natural disasters. Turkey is in a very active earthquake zone and if the Canadian government issues a ‘do not travel’ advisory, your travel insurance for Turkey may be able help.
As much as you may have planned each detail of your Turkish adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Turkey before you leave. Up-to-date warnings— including weather advisories and political situations—will be listed on the website.
It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.
English isn’t widely spoken in a lot of the country, Istanbul included, so a few basic Turkish phrases can go a long way. You may also want to read up on some travel tips to familiarize yourself with local customs before you take off. Istanbul and many coastal towns are quite modern but other regions, especially in southeastern Turkey, are much more culturally conservative. Women will benefit from carrying a light-weight scarf, which can come in handy to cover your head and shoulders at religious sites.
Enjoy your adventure and don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path! Find the magic lesser-visited spots, like Mardin and other ancient towns in eastern Turkey, or quieter islands such as a Gökçeada.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.
Whether you need medical assistance or emergency evacuation, our teams are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year before and during your trip.
Are you in need of emergency assistance right now?
Contact the teamIf you’re in the unfortunate position of having your luggage stolen, here’s what you need to do
As featured in:
So, you’ve packed your sunnies, swimsuits, and a stack of holiday reads, departed the UK, and landed in sunny Spain, ready to soak up some rays. But there’s just one problem…your luggage has decided to take its own detour. No need to panic—World Nomads offers travel insurance for stolen or damaged baggage.
If you’re in the unfortunate position of having your luggage stolen, here’s what you need to do:
No matter where your luggage goes missing, reporting it as soon as possible is essential. Here’s what to do based on where you last had your belongings:
On public transport (plane, train, bus, or ferry):
Report the loss immediately to the transport provider. Request written evidence, like a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) if available. Keep hold of any tickets, baggage receipts, or relevant documentation useful for a claim. Also, ask about any compensation they can provide and get this in writing.
At Your Accommodation:
If your luggage is lost or stolen from a hotel or other accommodation, immediately report it to the staff. Request a written confirmation of the incident and any compensation they might offer.
During a Tour or at a Public Venue (museum, airport, sports stadium):
Notify the tour operator, venue management, or security team of the incident. Ask for written confirmation of the loss or theft and any details on possible compensation.
Your situation not on here? Get in contact, and we can help.
Tip for UK travellers: keep all supporting documents, like tickets and receipts, and scan copies or save photos in a secure location. These records will be essential if you need to make a claim, especially for any replacement items you purchase while waiting for your luggage.
Don’t skip this step: filing a police report is critical for making an insurance claim. Head to the nearest station to report your lost luggage and be sure to get a copy of the report or at least a reference number—you’ll need it to back up your claim.
Act quickly to protect your information if your phone, tablet, or credit cards are missing. First, try calling your device—it might just turn up! If not, use tracking features like Find My iPhone or Find My Mobile to locate it on a map. If the device can’t be found, contact your provider to block the service and ask for written confirmation.
Call your bank immediately to cancel any stolen credit or debit cards and prevent unauthorised charges. Keep records of all actions taken, as these can be helpful when filing a claim.
Keep all your paperwork handy—receipts for emergency buys, travel itineraries, booking confirmations, and any cancellations. Missing documents could mean a reduced or rejected claim, so make sure you’ve got a solid record of everything.
Ideally, provide original purchase receipts for lost or damaged items, but if these aren’t available (especially for older items), alternatives like bank statements, credit card statements, invoices, or a notarised statement (if the item was a gift) can work as proof. Having this documentation will help ensure a smoother claims process.
Lost, stolen, and damaged luggage incidents account for nearly half of all travel insurance claims, so if you’re dealing with stolen gear, you’re not alone. And if you’re reading this as part of your trip prep, good on you for being proactive.
World Nomads offers two flexible travel insurance plans for UK travellers —Standard and Explorer—both covering stolen belongings. The Standard Plan provides the basics (up to £1,500 cover for baggage), while the Explorer Plan provides higher coverage limits and extra benefits (up to £3,000 cover for baggage).
Remember, each travel insurance policy is unique. Check your policy wording for all terms, conditions, and exclusions for the full rundown.

World Nomads policies generally cover expenses for replacing a lost or stolen passport, as well as transportation to and from the nearest consulate. Just be sure to report the loss to local authorities and keep a copy of the police report.
If you’ve lost the original receipt for an item, other proof may be acceptable, like bank or credit card statements, photos, or packaging. Providing as much documentation as possible helps support your claim.
If your luggage is delayed for more than 24 hrs, World Nomads will reimburse you for essential items (think toiletries and jocks). Keep all receipts for these items, as they’ll be needed for your claim.
Choosing between Standard and Explorer plans depends on your travel plans. The Standard plan provides essential coverage for general trips, while the Explorer plan offers higher limits and coverage for more adventurous activities. Look over the benefits of each to find the best fit for your trip.
Electronics are fragile, and checked-in luggage can easily be damaged.
You can file a claim but still need to show proof of ownership. Read our Help Center article for more info on what to do if you don’t have documentation.
From hiking through the Atlas Mountains to exploring the colorful medinas of Fez and Marrakech, learn how insurance for Morocco could help Canadian travellers.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Morocco? The leather tanneries and ancient city walls of Fez, the energetic souks of Marrakech, tree-climbing goats, Sahara Desert vistas, magnificent riads, and colorful mountain towns like the blue buildings built into the hills of Chefchaouen all come to mind for us. Of course, steaming pots of Moroccan mint tea, fragrant orange and olive groves, delicious tagines and couscous, and buzzing markets selling fresh produce and spices are not to be missed. Whatever your ideal trip looks like, Morocco offers adventure, natural beauty, a storied history blending Berber, French, Spanish, and Arab influences, and rich culinary and artisan traditions.
As great as Morocco is, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians travelling there. Whether you’re planning to go on a day hike or multi-day trek in the Atlas Mountains or learn to surf in Taghazout, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Morocco. Whether you have an accident while biking the precarious roads of Dades Gorge or end up with a serious bout of food poisoning, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Morocco.
Water and food-borne illnesses are a potential risk in Morocco. Make sure to drink bottled, treated, or filtered water and be careful of the places where you eat fresh vegetables. Food poisoning is no fun and can put a damper on any vacation.
In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits for certain covered risks and may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses should you experience an unexpected travel hiccup.
Trip cancellation and Trip interruption coverage can help protect you in case of emergencies before your leave, or back home in Canada after you’ve departed. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused, pre-paid travel expenses, (up to plan limits) like hotel stays or transportation tickets, that you can no longer use.

number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens. A lot of Morocco is French speaking, although the dialect might be quite different from the French Canadian that you’re used to. A few Arabic phrases can also come in handy to communicate in markets and restaurants.
You may also want to read up on some travel and cultural tips to familiarize yourself with local customs. Modest dress and a light-weight scarf is recommended for women to cover your head and shoulders at religious sites and in rural, more conservative regions. Be wary of scams at markets and don’t be afraid to engage in friendly haggling!
As with anywhere you visit, add a few unexpected destinations to your itinerary, such as the historic city of Tangier or join the El-Kelaa M'Gouna Rose Festival. And seek out community-driven experiences that connect you with local culture and give back to the communities you’re visiting.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, of if you have questions, just ask us.
Traveler Tip 1: make copies of all key documents you’ll be travelling with – passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets – and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.
Traveler tip 2: if you’re a victim of theft, to file a claim, be sure you get a police report or other written documentation such as a property irregularity report from your common carrier.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Nepal? Snow-capped mountains, Buddhist temples, and a welcoming, friendly culture all come to mind for us. Travellers also come to search for tigers and rhinos on safari in one of Nepal’s national parks, join a meditation retreat, relax in Pokhara, stay with a local family in farming villages, experience a religious ceremony or cultural festival, and sample Nepalese dishes like momos and dal bhat. Whatever your dream vacation looks like, Nepal is a place of endless adventure and rich culture.
With this much diversity, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians in Nepal. Travel insurance for Nepal can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as an injury sustained while hiking on the multi-day Manaslu Circuit or one of Nepal’s other great treks.
We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures. You might notice that our travel insurance plans for Nepal ring in at a higher cost than our insurance plans for other destinations. This is due to the inherent risk of high altitude climbing, which is one of the main reasons our nomads go to Nepal.
World Nomads travel insurance can provide coverage for hiking up to 6,000 metres.
Whether you’re planning to hike to Everest Base Camp or go white water rafting on Trishuli River, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Nepal. Day hikes and multi-day treks in the Himalayas, safari excursions in Chitwan, and paragliding in Pokhara are all covered under travel insurance for Nepal too.

High elevation trekking to popular spots like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, and the Manaslu Circuit all require Level 3 coverage, as they involve hiking in altitudes over 3,000 meters. In Nepal, the healthcare system may not be what you are familiar with back home. It can be particularly difficult to access reliable health care in rural areas, especially remote regions of the Himalayas. You can protect yourself from emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for Nepal.
In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.
Travel insurance for Nepal also may cover medical evacuation and repatriation insurance, if our Emergency Assistance Team or your treating Physician recommends you return Canada because of your medical condition after you’ve received medical treatment. In the event that you need an air ambulance from the mountains to transport you to the nearest qualified medical service provider, you must receive approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Teams first. The team knows which evacuation companies are reliable and safe; we know of several scams operating in this space. Without prior approval, you will not be reimbursed for the cost of the flight. The emergency assistance team can also help you determine whether your injury or illness qualifies for a trip down the mountain. Be aware that some local companies might scam you into believing your injury is worse than it is to drive up costs. Remember, you must contact our Emergency Assistance Team before seeking medical attention, emergency evacuation or repatriation, unless your medical condition prevents you from calling, in which case you must call as soon as medically possible or have someone call on your behalf.
Nepal is a stunning destination for adventure and cultural experiences, but there are some things to be aware of when visiting. Travellers sometimes can encounter scams that can derail your plans and impact your trip. Unfortunately, these scams are not covered by travel insurance.
One common scam travellers to Nepal have encountered is an evacuation and helicopter scam. Trekking companies may offer a cheap trekking excursion but manipulate you into signing a form agreeing to helicopter evacuation. It’s helpful to do some advance research on potential trekking companies and read reviews to ensure the company you’re trekking with is trustworthy and legitimate.
Another potential scam is with taxis. If you grab a taxi off the street, either insist they use the meter or agree on a price beforehand, to prevent them from driving long routes or pretending that the meter is broken to drive up the costs. You also might encounter people on the street offering to show you around and then demanding money for their tour guides services. Nepal is generally a safe and welcoming country and using common sense can go a long way to help you avoid scams.
Whether the airline lost your luggage, or your purse was stolen, lost bags can happen during travel. Did you land in Kathmandu but your bag—packed with your hiking boots and trekking gear—didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.
If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, your travel insurance for Nepal could still reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, and maybe even new trekking gear, until you and your bag are reunited.
Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable expenses.
We never anticipate natural disasters interrupting our trip to Nepal, but they can happen. Earthquakes are a potential risk, which can also trigger avalanches in the mountains. Monsoon season typically hits from July through September in Nepal, and heavy rains have been known to cause extreme floods and landslides. Storms and natural disasters are impossible to predict so the best thing you can do is protect yourself with travel insurance for Nepal.
If you bought your travel insurance plan prior to a natural disaster developing into a major event, your travel insurance for Nepal may provide cancellation protection if you are unable to occupy your destination residence because of a natural disaster. Also, if after you’ve purchased your travel insurance policy, the Canadian Government issues travel advisory advising Canadians to avoid travel to a destination, country or region listed on your itinerary, you may be eligible for trip cancellation or trip interruption benefits.
Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can also help protect you in case of emergencies back home in Canada. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement (subject to plan limits) of your prepaid, unused hotel expenses or airfare that you can no longer use.
As much as you may have planned each detail of your Nepalese adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Nepal before you leave. Up-to-date warnings-- including weather advisories and political situations-- will be listed on the website.
It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens. Learning a few Nepalese phrases will go a long way too.
Finally, we recommend checking out our travel tips for Nepal, to help prepare you with some basic etiquette to respect local culture. You may also want to read up on some extraordinary experiences for some inspiration and read our packing list tips, to make sure you’re prepared for your trek.

While you’ll have an out of this world time hiking through the desert, Chile offers so many more thrilling adventures. World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadians travelling to Chile and includes things like rafting the Rio Futaleufu and rock climbing in Patagonia.
When you get a quote for your travel insurance for Chile, you’ll need to list your planned activities. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you’re participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, you can contact us to determine if you will be covered.
One of the coolest (or should we say hottest) things to see in Chile are the geysers. It’s fascinating to see the dramatic eruption of the steaming water shooting high into the air. As you can imagine though, it also comes with its own set of dangers. Although it doesn’t happen a lot, we’ve heard reports of travellers falling into geysers and being severely burned.
Always watch your step when you’re near geysers. The thick fog from the fumaroles and glare from the sun can sometimes make it difficult to see where you’re stepping. Accidents can happen and if you do get injured your Government Health Insurance Plan may only pay a small portion, if any, of your medical expenses in Chile.
If you have a medical emergency when travelling to Chile, you can call the 24/7 emergency assistance team and they can help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. They can also help communicate with your Chilean medical team if there are language barriers.
If your doctor determines that it’s best for you to go home to Canada to get medical care, the repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Chile may cover the costs to get you there.
Nobody ever plans to lose their bags, but it happens. If you’re planning to trek through the Andes Mountains, you may be bringing along your new pair of hiking boots. If you get to Santiago and then realize that the airline lost your bag, the baggage coverage included in your travel insurance for Chile may reimburse you for the cost to replace your hiking boots and other belongings. When you get a quote, you can check the wording in your international travel insurance policy to get the specific details on depreciation and policy limits.
If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, you could still be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until you and your bag are reunited.
Theft is something to watch out for when you travel to Chile - especially in crowded touristy areas like Santiago and Valparaiso. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid putting anything valuable in your back pockets. You may also want to carry handbags across your body, and wear backpacks on your front.
You’ll also want to keep an eye on your bags at bus terminals, train stations, and airports. We’ve heard about organized scams where a visitor gets sprayed with something and then a “good Samaritan” points it out and offers to help. It’s really a ploy to divert your attention while someone else comes up and steals your belongings.
If anything does happen, make sure you make a police report. You’ll need that if you have to make a claim.
Sometimes you have the perfect getaway planned, but things happen that can cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip.
Chile is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and earthquakes and volcanoes can happen anytime. The government has been known to restrict access to Conguillo National Park because of concerns about flare-ups of the Llaima volcano. If your trip is cancelled because a volcano erupts and the Canadian Government issues a travel advisory against travel to that region, your travel insurance for Chile could help you be reimbursed for non-refundable tours and hotel accommodations that you paid for in advance. You’ll need to have purchased your plan before any travel advisory has been issued though (once it erupts, it’s no longer unexpected and travel insurance doesn’t cover “known” events”).
Travel insurance could also help if you’re already on your trip and something happens. For example, you may need to go back to Canada early if an immediate family member has an unexpected medical emergency or dies.
When you’re searching for the best travel insurance for Chile, check to make sure it has coverage for trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption. If it does, you could be reimbursed for unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if something unexpected happens.
Before you leave Canada, we encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Chile to review their up-to-date warnings on any advisories. Weather, safety, and political situations can change at any time, and this is where they list their up-to-date warnings on any advisories that may exist at that time.
If you purchase travel insurance for Chile, it’s a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your policy number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.
Take extra camera batteries. The worst feeling is to get set up for the perfect shot of an Andean Condor, only to find out you have a dead battery. Trust us on this one - we’ve been the ones who’ve been left with nothing but memories, and no pictures to show to our friends back home. Prepare ahead of time, and if you are making the journey to see the penguins, make sure to read up on some of our tips on how to photograph wildlife in an ethical way.
There are so many great tours that Canadian visitors can book in Chile. When you’re researching options, try to find an eco-friendly tour operator. With the vast amount of untouched natural land and waterways in Chile, it’s up to us nomads to do our part to protect it for years to come.

It’s no wonder Argentina is a popular destination for Canadians. Whether you’re taking a road trip to see glaciers, experiencing the nightlife in Buenos Aires, rafting the Mendoza River or visiting the hot springs in Concordia, there are countless adventures for our World Nomads travellers.
While a trip to Argentina is an amazing experience, there are some things to be aware of when you’re visiting from Canada. Our nomads have experienced it all - from lost baggage to natural disasters. We’ve learned quite a bit in our travels and we encourage you to check out our team’s tips on what to know before you go to Argentina.
International travel can bring all kinds of unexpected surprises. Some are great, like the new friendships made while sipping mate or discovering the flower shop in Retiro is actually a secret speakeasy.
Some surprises are not so great. Nobody wants to think about things like cancelled trips, delayed baggage and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly. If you fall and get hurt while enjoying some of the great hiking spots in Argentina you may wish that you had travel insurance for Argentina.
There are different plans to select from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.
From surfing at Mar del Plata to riding horses with the gauchos in Bariloche, World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadians travelling to Argentina. You could even be covered for rock climbing in Piedra Parada and camping in Los Glaciares National Park.
When you get a quote for your travel insurance for Argentina, you’ll need to list your planned activities. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you’re participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, you can contact us to determine if you will be covered.
With all of the fun to be had in Argentina, there are plenty of adventure activities that you’ll want to try. Our nomads all agree that one of our favorite activities is visiting Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia.
While the coolness of glacier walking can’t be denied, anytime you’re walking on slippery ice, accidents can happen. If you lose your footing, slide, and fall into a crevasse, you could end up with injuries. Sure, you’ll have a jaw dropping story to tell at parties back home in Canada once you’re feeling better, but you’re also going to need to get emergency medical care as soon as that happens.
If you have a medical emergency when travelling in Argentina, you can call the 24/7 emergency assistance team and they can help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. You’ll need to call and report your emergency as soon as it happens, or as soon as you are able. They can also help communicate with your Argentinian medical team if language is a barrier.
If your doctor determines that it’s best for you to go home to Canada to get medical care, the repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Argentina may cover the costs to get you there.
Nobody ever plans for lost bags, but it happens. If you’re planning to hike the Cerro de Siete Colores (the stratified Hill of Seven Colors), you may be bringing along your new pair of hiking boots. If you get to Jujuy and realize that the airline lost your bag, the baggage coverage included in your travel insurance may reimburse you for the cost to replace your hiking boots and other belongings. When you get a quote, you can check the policy wording in your international travel insurance policy to get the specific details on depreciation and policy limits.
If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, you could still be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until you and your bag are reunited.
Theft is something to watch out for when you travel to Argentina - especially in crowded touristy areas like Buenos Aires. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid putting anything valuable in your back pockets.
Smartphones and iPads are expensive in Argentina, so things like that are highly valued by thieves. Try not to use these in public, and definitely don’t leave them sitting around. Expensive jewelry can also be appealing to thieves, so you may want to leave the bling locked up in your hotel room safe.
Another thing to be aware of in Argentina is motochorros (motorcycle robberies). This is where two people on a motorcycle grab your belongings from your hand as they are passing by you, and then speed off.
Many Canadian visitors don’t have any problems at all when visiting Argentina, but it’s always important to be vigilant. If anything does happen, make sure you make a police report. You’ll need that if you have to make a claim.
You’ll need to do your part to keep your belongings safe too. Argentina is famous for its wine and there’s opportunities to sample some of the delicious varieties that can be found there. However, if you’re in Cafayate, overindulge at your wine tasting, and forget your purse at the vineyard, you won’t be covered by your travel insurance for Argentina if it’s not there waiting on you the next day.
Sometimes you have the perfect getaway planned, but things happen that can cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip.
Argentina is located in an active seismic zone, and there’s the possibility of natural disasters that can affect your travels. If you need to cancel your trip to Salta because an earthquake makes it impossible for you to get there and the Canadian Government has issued a travel advisory against travel to Argentina, your travel insurance for Argentina could help you be reimbursed for non-refundable tours and hotel accommodations that you paid for in advance.
Travel insurance could also help if you’re already on your trip and something happens. For example, you may need to go back to Canada early if an immediate family member has an unexpected medical emergency or dies.

Take extra camera batteries. The worst feeling is to get set up for the perfect shot of the Magellanic penguins on Punta Tombo, only to find out you have a dead battery. Trust us on this one - we’ve been the ones who’ve been left with nothing but memories, and no pictures to show to our friends back home. Prepare ahead of time, and if you do decide to make the journey to see the penguins, make sure to read up on some of our tips on how to photograph wildlife in an ethical way.
Before you leave Canada, read up on the laws in Argentina. Enjoy the adventures, but make time for a little rest and relaxation too. In many areas, siestas are a part of the culture in Argentina. So do as the locals do, and don’t feel bad about squeezing in a little nap time between all of your awesome adventures and activities.

So, you’re stuck at the airport, and your travel plans are suddenly up in the air (pun intended). Whether your flight’s been delayed, cancelled, or you’ve missed your connection, it’s a frustrating experience.
As an EU traveller, you have certain rights, and your airline should be your first stop for assistance. But don’t forget, your travel insurance might offer additional perks - like access to airport lounges through SmartDelay™ - making the wait a bit more bearable (perhaps even enjoyable). Grab a beverage and read on to discover how to make the best of a bad situation and keep your journey on track.
Take a deep breath and try not to panic. Flight disruptions happen, and you'll get through this.
Travelers tip: it’s a great idea to download your airline’s app before you leave home, because let’s face it, no one likes having to stand in chaotic situations, trying to download and register for apps in moments of stress. If the app is already on your phone, you can access the information you need, as soon as you know you have flight issues.
Traveler tip: When your flight is canceled or you miss a connection, it’s natural to want to immediately book a new flight. But take a breath and hold off. Your airline might automatically rebook you on the next available flight—often at no extra cost. Before making any decisions, check your airline’s app or speak to their customer service. Buying a new ticket in haste might mean you’re left paying out of pocket, as airlines typically won’t reimburse you for flights purchased independently, and travel insurance may only cover specific situations. Patience can save you both money and stress.
Travelers tip: if your airline offers you a reasonable alternative, take it. Should you need to make a travel insurance claim later, you’ll need to show that you first tried to get reimbursed by the airline or your travel provider. Keep all the proof handy—it’ll make your claim process smoother.
Traveler tip: getting to the airport early is key. Aim for at least two hours for domestic flights and three for international ones—but double-check with your airline for the latest advice. This way, you’ll breeze through security with time to spare, keeping your travel day stress-free.
Traveller tip: delays and cancellations happen more often than we’d like, so it’s best to be prepared. Wear comfy clothes, pack some snacks, and have your favourite book, show, or playlist ready to keep you entertained while you wait.
Travel insurance may be able to step in where your airline falls short. Here are some situations where travel insurance may be able to provide some relief.
World Nomads offers a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan, which have different per-day and maximum benefit limits. For EU travellers, who’ve purchased an Explorer Plan, World Nomads may offer the following coverage:
Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits. Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits.
Turn delays into downtime with SmartDelay. Offered exclusively to World Nomad travel insurance policyholders, SmartDelay transforms an otherwise frustrating flight delay into an opportunity for a moment of comfort and relaxation – at no extra cost. Now, that’s one way to turn a negative into a positive, right?
Before you travel (at least 24 hours), simply register your flight details with SmartDelay. If your flight gets delayed by more than 90 minutes, you and up to four additional passengers (named on their policy and on the same flight) automatically receive a LoungeKey™ pass, aka your personal ticket to a comfortable, relaxing airport lounge (and complimentary snacks—plenty of snacks!).
With SmartDelay, you can enjoy a range of benefits in the airport lounge, including:
Entertainment options: pass the time with a selection of TVs, magazines, and more – keeping boredom at bay while you wait for your flight.

Planning a getaway and looking forward to some well-deserved travel outside of Ireland? Whether you're heading to the sun-soaked beaches of Spain or exploring the bustling streets of New York, flight delays can throw a wrench in your plans.
But don’t let a delayed flight ruin your trip. With World Nomads' travel insurance, you can relax knowing you're covered. Plus, with features like SmartDelay™, you can turn those unexpected hold-ups into a chance to unwind in style.
Flight delays happen—don’t panic. Start by checking the airport screens or your airline’s app for real-time updates. If there’s no information available, head to the airline’s customer service desk or call their helpline to get the latest status.
Travelers tip: it’s a great idea to download your airline’s app before you leave home, because let’s face it, no one likes having to stand in chaotic situations, trying to download and register for apps in moments of stress. If the app is already on your phone, you can access the information you need, as soon as you know you have flight issues.
As a traveller from Ireland, you’re protected under European Union regulations like EU261, which outline passenger rights when flights are delayed or cancelled. Depending on the circumstances, you could be entitled to compensation, meals, accommodation, or even refunds.
In the event of a cancellation, your airline must provide alternative travel arrangements. For lengthy delays, this could include accommodation, meals, and transportation.
If the airline doesn't provide these services, keep all receipts and consider claiming these expenses as part of your compensation (from the airline). If the airline’s unable to provide meal or hotel vouchers, you may be able to claim for reimbursement of out-of-pocket meal and lodging expenses under your trip delay benefit. You’ll need written confirmation from your airline that includes:
Traveler tip: getting to the airport early is key. Aim for at least two hours for domestic flights and three for international ones—but double-check with your airline for the latest advice. This way, you’ll breeze through security with time to spare, keeping your travel day stress-free.
Keep records of all your interactions with the airline—note names, dates, and times of conversations. Take photos or screenshot of flight status screens, announcements, or other relevant information.
Traveller tip: delays and cancellations happen more often than we’d like, so it’s best to be prepared. Wear comfy clothes, pack some snacks, and have your favourite book, show, or playlist ready to keep you entertained while you wait.
If you’re airline falls short, travel insurance may help cover additional costs. With World Nomads’ Standard and Explorer Plans, you may be eligible for coverage in a range of situations, from delayed flights to lost baggage.
For example, the Explorer Plan may cover:
Turn a frustrating flight delay into an opportunity to relax with SmartDelay, exclusively for World Nomads policyholders. If your flight is delayed by more than 90 minutes, you’ll receive a LoungeKey™ pass, giving you access to a comfortable airport lounge.

It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs.
