Kiwis are a wild bunch…they just love adventure. Combining physical strength, mental focus, and a deep appreciation for nature's wonders, rock climbing has become a popular pursuit for Kiwis seeking exhilaration and excitement. Combine that with a holiday abroad, and you have a recipe for pure fun.
However, whether you're a seasoned climber or a novice enthusiast, rock climbing can be a dangerous sport.
World Nomads offers coverage across two insurance policies (Standard and Explorer) for four different rock climbing activities:
Note: some of these activities require package upgrades or specific qualifications. For this reason, we recommend you refer to your Policy Document or contact us before purchasing a travel insurance policy. Please note: soloing/free soloing rock climbing is not covered.
If you’re looking for a location to climb between November and April, check out Krabi province in Thailand – the limestone cliffs have many routes for all skill levels. Keep in mind though, Thailand has some of the busiest airports in the world, and with that comes the possibility of lost baggage. Or even worse your rock climbing gear could go missing in transit or be snatched right under your eyes. If this happens our travel insurance may be able to help.
If you arrive at the airport and your baggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for the cost of essential items (think jocks, socks, and a toothbrush). And if the unthinkable has happened and your baggage or climbing gear is lost or stolen, we may cover the original purchase price to replace the items.
Let’s not sugar-coat it, rock climbing’s all about mental and physical strength and stamina – one small slip-up can, unfortunately, end badly. Also, even the best climbers can be affected by natural challenges, for instance, what if you’re climbing the sheer limestone walls of Frankenjura, Germany and find yourself impacted by falling loose rock? Our travel insurance coverage could assist with any overseas medical care needed to get you back on your feet again.
Here are some of the ways travel insurance could come in handy on your next overseas trip:
Cover for over 150 sports, activities and experiences: Yosemite National Park is renowned as a world-class destination for rock climbing. And hiking. And kayaking. And cycling. World Nomads provides travel insurance for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences. While this list might seem exhaustive, it doesn’t cover everything. That’s why you shouldn’t take for granted that your preferred activities will be covered. You can’t upgrade your level of cover mid-way through your holiday, so do consider this wisely.
Cover for stolen gear: Travel insurance may help you continue to ‘rock on’ if someone decides they like your gear more than you do and steals it. Both the Standard and Explorer policies offer coverage for the cost of stolen belongings (up to policy limits).
Some things we may not cover include:
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
The information provided is of a general nature and is provided for information purposes only. It does not constitute financial advice in any form and should not be relied on as a substitute for obtaining professional advice that is specific to your circumstances. You should seek advice from a financial advice provider if you would like further information about whether a particular product is appropriate for you and your circumstances.
Traveller tip: no one plans for a natural disaster, but unfortunately, they happen. If your whole trip or your rock climbing session is interrupted by a natural disaster and you’re forced to extend your stay, our travel insurance may cover the reasonable and necessary costs (up to policy limits).
Travel insurance tip: if you’ve already arrived at your overseas holiday destination and forgot to buy travel insurance before leaving New Zealand, don’t panic. You can visit the World Nomads website at any time of the day or night to purchase a policy.
Traveller tip: if your climbing gear is stolen, it’s imperative you get on the front foot by reporting it to the authorities and obtaining a police report. After that, we ask that you contact us to submit a claim. Always keep copies or originals of any receipts in case you need to make a claim for stolen gear and valuables.
Traveller tip: rock climbing can get gnarly, which is why doing your research into travel insurance could be a wise decision. Make sure you take the time to understand what you're signing up for, including what happens if you need to be plucked off a mountain or need a bit of patching up. Do your research, back the ropes, and conquer the world – one rock face at a time!

Ready to conquer new heights? Literally? Aussie explorers have been attracted to rock climbing for centuries, and it’s easy to see why – rocky climbing ticks all the boxes; physical strength, mental focus, (nearly) untouched landscapes, and breathtaking views. Embarking on a rock climbing adventure can be an exhilarating experience, however, amidst the adrenaline rush and excitement, it's important not to forget to research travel insurance…just in case.

It’s no secret that Aussies love a thrill-seeking adventure, and while Australia offers some of the best rock-climbing locations, there’s always an allure to travel abroad and discover new and challenging rock formations to scale. However, travelling overseas and hanging off cliff faces also presents risk. World Nomads could be your ticket to having fun, the safe way.

Trusted by:

The excitement of traveling overseas for a long-awaited holiday can quickly turn into frustration and anxiety when you arrive at your destination, but your luggage doesn’t. It can be stressful standing at the conveyer belt waiting for your luggage to appear, when the last bag finally comes out and it’s not yours, but our guide can help you work out what to do next.
Once you realise your baggage has been delayed, speak with a representative from your carrier (usually your airline) to report the delay. Ask them for a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) or another official document. The report should state the reason for the delay as well as the date and time that your luggage is estimated to arrive. You will need this report to support any claims. Ask the carrier for some financial assistance to help you buy some everyday items such as toothpaste, deodorant or new underwear while you wait for your bags. If they refuse your request, then ask them to put the reason for their denial in writing to you. You must include this letter or report with your other documentation when submitting any claims for essential items.
If you need to buy a few essentials to make life more comfortable until your bags arrive, then you’ll need to keep copies of your receipts should you wish to claim for these expenses. Cover for essential items is only offered to travelers whose luggage is delayed for at least 24 hours after their scheduled arrival. If your luggage is returned to you within 24 hours of arriving, you can't claim for essential items. Only receipts showing a date and time which is at least 24 hours after your scheduled arrival, and before the delivery time of your luggage, will be covered.
Before you rush out to buy this season’s must-haves, keep in mind that only reasonably necessary items may be covered under our policies. These are items to help you stay clean, fresh, and comfortable until your baggage is returned to you. Some examples of reasonably necessary items could include:
Note: There is no cover for essential items if your luggage is delayed on your return home to Country of Residence.
Both our Standard and Explorer plans have different daily limits of cover for delayed baggage. Please read through your Policy Wording to make sure you’re aware of the limits, benefits and terms and conditions, and exclusions that relate to your policy. If you have questions about what's covered and not covered, just ask us.
Once your bags are returned to you, ask your carrier for another report stating the reason for the delay, the length of the delay, as well as the date and time the luggage was returned to you.
Always read the Policy Wording and General Exclusions for other scenarios and expenses we don’t cover so there’ll be no surprises if you need to use your cover. This information could help you if things go wrong and you want to make a claim. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please get in touch.

Check out our Travel Insurance plans which may help safeguard you on your trip to Ecuador.
Trusted by:
For such a relatively small country, Ecuador is packed with amazing experiences for the adventurous traveler. From hiking up volcanoes to biking down the Andes, from floating through the jungle to fishing for piranha, thrills are everywhere. And that’s to say nothing of the amazing wildlife waiting to be discovered in the Galapagos Islands!
But along with adventure comes risk, and what if a natural disaster strikes or you suffer an accident far away from the nearest town? When planning your dream vacation, a travel insurance policy may be a good idea to help get you back on course in case an unexpected event means things go awry.
A once in a lifetime trip to go snorkeling with the sharks, sea turtles and manta rays in the Galapagos means a lot of financial outlay. Travel insurance covering lost baggage and medical emergencies can help protect this investment if the unexpected happens.
A World Nomads travel insurance policy may provide cover for:
If it’s relaxed beaches or snow-capped mountains you’re after, Ecuador has everything to make a visit the best vacation ever! But things might not go according to plan and knowing that you may be able to resolve financial, medical or logistical problems through your travel insurance policy is a great comfort. Some of the unexpected events that we may be able to help you with include:
Even though Brazil and Ecuador are close neighbors, airline companies can still manage to mislay or lose your baggage. If this happens, make sure that you follow all the correct reporting procedures at the airport and World Nomads may be able to provide you with reimbursement for a change of clothing and personal items until things get sorted.
With so much to do in Ecuador, you’ve probably spent a long time making travel arrangements. But if something unexpected, such as an illness or an accident, happens just prior to departure, or even during your trip, your travel insurance policy may be able to help recover some of your losses.
The bigger cities such as Quito and Cuenca provide a fascinating mix of indigenous and Spanish history and culture, including one of Latin America’s largest outdoor markets. But if you’re pickpocketed while browsing the local handicrafts, our round-the-clock hotline may be able to point you to the local police station and help you obtain temporary documents. We can also assist in getting funds wired over from your family back in Brazil.
If you injure yourself on a hike to the famous crater lakes or on a whitewater rafting expedition from the mountains into the jungle, our 24/7 emergency assistance team can help you find the nearest medical center. If the injury is serious, World Nomads may also be able to help arrange for emergency evacuation and repatriation back to Brazil.
Unfortunately, the effects of the pandemic are still a part of our lives, so if you fall ill with a Coronavirus-related medical problem, your insurance may be able to help with hospital stays and medication.
World Nomads has developed travel insurance for the adventurous traveler with cover for more than 150 exciting sports and activities. With amazing new experiences being developed in Ecuador, such as high altitude ziplining and swings flying out over canyons, it is important that you read through the different policies – Standard, Explorer and Explorer Plus – and decide which one is right for the kind of vacation you plan on taking.
Of course, no insurance policy can cover absolutely everything, and there are a number of things that World Nomads will not provide assistance or reimbursement for. These may include:
Of course, this is only a brief guide to insurance while traveling in Ecuador. So before heading off to the “center of the world,” please feel free to contact us for more detailed information on the different policies and cover available.

Chegaram as férias, é hora de surfar! Pegue uma onda no paraíso dos surfistas – mas não se esqueça do seu seguro.
Trusted by:

So you’re stuck at the airport … we’ve all been there. If your flight has been delayed or cancelled, or you’ve missed your connection, your airline should always be your first port of call. But travel insurance may be able to help in certain circumstances. Read on for more info.
In many cases, if your flight has been cancelled or you miss a connection, your airline will automatically rebook you. Before travel, download your airline’s app, and refresh the app as soon as you realize you’ve got flight issues.
If your airline has not automatically rebooked you, head to the service desk or call their customer care line. But don’t rush to buy a new flight, as neither the airline nor travel insurance are likely to reimburse you for a new flight.
Your airline is obligated to rebook you if your flight has been cancelled or you’ve been bumped from an oversold flight. Travel insurance won’t reimburse you if you’ve been bumped, so seek compensation directly from your airline. If they can’t get you on a new flight until tomorrow, ask to be rebooked on another carrier, or request meal and hotel vouchers. You must accept any reasonable alternative options offered by the airline. If you do end up making a travel insurance claim, you’ll need proof that you first sought reimbursement from your airline.
If the airline is unable to provide meal or hotel vouchers, you may be able to claim for reimbursement of out-of-pocket meal and lodging expenses under your trip delay benefit. You’ll need written confirmation from your airline that includes:
Head straight to the airline desk to get this critical information or ask a telephone agent to email you these details on the spot.
Remember to keep receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses you incur during your delay – you’ll need these to make a claim. Your trip delay benefit may cover taxi fares, lodging and meals while you’re delayed. And if your bags are delayed too, by more than 12 hours, keep receipts for the essential toiletries and a change of clothes that you’ll need until your trip resumes and you’re reunited with your bag.
If you do need to make a claim, check out our how to make a claim article for step-by-step guidance.
Travel insurance may be able to step in where your airline falls short. Here are some situations where travel insurance may be able to provide some relief.
World Nomads offers a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan, which have different benefit limits. Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits.
Traveler tip 1: You may have coverage if your flight was canceled due to an airline’s unannounced strike action. If you would like to know what you may be covered for in case a strike leaves you stuck at the airport, read our Help Centre article – Does travel insurance cover strikes?
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Exclusions include, but are not limited to:
Traveler tip 2: if you are going to miss your flight because you’re just running late, that’s not a Covered Risk. Under World Nomads policies, if an event is not specifically listed as a Covered Risk, there is no coverage for that event. Always make sure you read your Policy Wording or Certificate of Insurance for a full description of the coverage, terms, conditions and exclusions that apply.
We know delays and cancellations are frustrating, but here are a few tips to help smooth the journey.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

From Old Town Quito to the magnificent Galapagos, Ecuador has plenty to explore. Make sure you're covered.

Ecuador is rich in culture, with historic cities, spectacular scenery and countless opportunities to get active. Exploring Ecuador's UNESCO historic centers in Quito and Cuenca, kayaking through the Amazon and hiking the Andes are all great ways to experience this country. American travelers often consider the biodiverse Galapagos Islands to be the trip of a lifetime.
Emergencies can affect even the best-planned trip: natural disasters, strikes, unexpected illness and theft are just a few things that can derail your travels. You should consider travel insurance in case you need to recover losses resulting from unforeseeable events.
World Nomads may provide coverage (up to the policy benefit limits) for:
A travel insurance plan that includes trip cancellation and interruption coverage can help protect your trip investment; baggage coverage can help you recoup some costs in case of bag delay or loss; and emergency medical can help if you get sick or injured while on the road.
World Nomads offers two plans to choose from: a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan. The Standard Plan includes a range of benefits such as overseas emergency medical, baggage delay, trip cancellation and coverage for more than 150 activities. Our Explorer plan includes everything in the Standard and offers some additional benefits along with higher benefit limits. Travel insurance does not cover everything so be sure to read your policy wording to make sure it meets your needs.
World Nomads Travel Insurance may cover trip cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances. If there’s a death in your immediate family, or if you or a close family member becomes sick or injured and a doctor says you can’t travel to Ecuador, travel insurance may reimburse any non-refundable, prepaid trip arrangements.
While you’re on the road, a World Nomads policy can provide important benefits. If you need to cut your trip short due to an emergency back home, your trip interruption benefits may reimburse the costs for your return trip home plus any forfeited prepaid, unused, non-refundable trip expenses up to the limits shown in your policy documents.
For example, if you paid in advance and hired a naturalist for a private tour in the Galapagos, and you have to depart for a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for this non-refundable and unused trip expense.
When filing a claim for either cancellation or interruption, you will need to submit documentation for all non-refundable, prepaid trip costs and associated expenses.
Your American health insurance is unlikely to be accepted in Ecuador. If you become sick or suffer an accidental injury while traveling in Ecuador without overseas travel coverage, any emergency medical or dental costs (or even worse, emergency evacuation back to the U.S.) will be at your expense.
Accidents and illness can happen on vacation, from food poisoning to twisting your ankle on the cobblestones in Quito or getting in the way of an angry sea lion on San Cristobal. A travel insurance plan which offers cover for emergency overseas medical expenses may help in unexpected situations.
As an American policyholder, you may have coverage for some COVID-19-related events. For details on coverage available to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article.
Having a medical emergency while traveling can be scary, but with a World Nomads travel insurance policy, you are not alone. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help you find appropriate medical care and offer translation services, liaise with doctors and even arrange upfront payment if required.
Some of the best sites in Ecuador are remote. This is where our Emergency Assistance Team can help arrange emergency evacuation to the closest medical facility or repatriation back to the U.S. when medically necessary.
If you’re checking a bag, there’s always a chance it could take a detour en route to Ecuador. For example, if your itinerary is Chicago to Miami to Quito, and your bag is lost or delayed, your baggage delay benefits may apply.
Reimbursement may be available for personal effects if your checked baggage is delayed or misdirected by an airline carrier for more than 12 hours. Refer to your policy for complete details.
Lost or stolen baggage and belongings may also be covered, for example, a phone swiped from your bag in a crowded Quito market, or a bag permanently lost by an airline (with travel insurance cover being secondary to airline reimbursement).
To keep your belongings safe, use a concealed money belt or cross-body bag to hold your travel documents, valuables and money. It’s also a good idea to be mindful of your surroundings, especially in busy tourist areas.
If your bags or belongings are damaged or stolen, file an incident report with local authorities or your airline immediately. Where theft has occurred, this must be reported to the police. You’ll need this documentation and any relevant receipts when you make a claim.
Ecuador boasts no shortage of opportunities to get active, from mountain biking the legendary Mama Rumi trail to rafting on the Quijos River. Surfing, snorkeling and hiking are just a few of the activities on offer in the Galapagos. World Nomads offers travel insurance coverage for more than 150 adventure activities and sports. Read your policy documents carefully to ensure your chosen activities are covered.
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything – so make sure you know what you’re covered for. Some things we don’t cover include but are not limited to:

So you’re stuck at the airport … we’ve all been there. If your flight has been delayed or cancelled, or you’ve missed your connection, your airline should always be your first port of call. But travel insurance may be able to help in certain circumstances. Read on for more info.
In many cases, if your flight has been cancelled or you miss a connection, your airline will automatically rebook you. Before travel, download your airline’s app, and refresh the app as soon as you realize you’ve got flight issues.
If your airline has not automatically rebooked you, head to the service desk or call their customer care line. But don’t rush to buy a new flight, as the airline is not likely to reimburse you for a flight purchased on your own and travel insurance can only reimburse you if your flight is canceled for a reason specified by your plan.
If you do end up making a travel insurance claim, you’ll need proof that you first sought reimbursement from your airline or other travel provider.
Your trip delay benefit may cover local transportation, lodging and meals while you’re delayed. And if your bags are delayed too, by more than 12 hours, keep receipts for the essential toiletries and a change of clothes that you had to buy until your trip resumes and you’re reunited with your bag.
If you do need to make a claim, check out our how to make a claim article for step-by-step guidance.
Travel insurance may be able to step in where your airline falls short. Here are some situations where travel insurance may be able to provide some relief.
World Nomads offers a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan, which have different per day and maximum benefit limits. Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits.
Traveler tip 1: You may have coverage if your flight was canceled due to an unannounced airline strike. Read our Help Centre article – Does travel insurance cover strikes to learn more.
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Exclusions include, but are not limited to:
Traveler tip 2: if you are going to miss your flight because you’re just running late, contact your airline. Travel insurance won’t be able to reimburse you for your missed flight if you overslept, got stuck in
