If something happens on your trip and you need to come back to New Zealand, World Nomads travel insurance can help you pick up where you left off once you’re ready to go again.

What is trip resumption cover?

If you've had to interrupt your trip and return back to New Zealand because you:

  • Were sick or injured overseas, or
  • One of your close relatives has been hospitalised or has died, or
  • A severe weather event has struck your home in New Zealand resulting in severe damage,

World Nomads overseas travel insurance policies offer coverage for reasonable transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, so that you can get back on the road and finish your trip.

What am I covered for if my trip has been cut short?

We may pay for reasonable additional transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, for you to resume your trip if you’ve had to return home during your travels for a compassionate emergency visit, your repatriation back home for medical treatment, or because your home in New Zealand is severely damaged by a natural disaster.

Your policy still needs to be valid for the period of your resumed trip. Your policy also needs to be the one that you were travelling on when you had to return home.

Trip resumption: what's not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Some things we don’t cover for trip resumption include:

  • Any expenses incurred while you're at home.

  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Any trip resumption expenses unless pre-approved by us or our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.
  • If you don’t wish to resume your trip, your cover will cease at the time you arrive home. There is no refund for any unused portion of your policy.
  • Anything else listed in the exclusions on your policy.

Grandma in palliative care

My grandmother suffered an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage after having a fall and was subsequently placed in palliative care in November. I received a phone call to return home as my grandmother only had a few days to live according to the doctors. I returned home, and she passed away. I then recommenced my travels after her passing and funeral.

Bali travel insurance and safety tips

While Bali is generally safe, if you’re venturing there for the first time, it’s handy to be well-versed on how to traverse the island safely.

Safety

  • Be mindful of traffic when crossing streets – Bali’s traffic can be chaotic.
  • Avoid leaving valuables unattended at the beach or in crowded areas. Keep valuables in a bum bag and lock your room at night.
  • Wear plenty of insect repellent and sunscreen and don’t drink tap water or drinks with ice.
  • Respect local traditions and customs, including dress codes when visiting cultural attractions like temples and sacred sites.
  • Only consume drinks from a reputable bar and avoid Arak – cases of methanol poisoning have been reported because of this traditional Balinese drink.

Travel insurance

  • Check that your travel insurance policy includes cover for all of the activities you intend to undertake while in Bali. You may need to pay an additional premium if the activity is ‘high risk.’
  • Understand the terms and conditions of your chosen insurance policy, including exclusions or limitations.
  • Ensure your travel insurance covers medical emergencies, including evacuation if required.

Traveler tip: make copies of all key travel documents – passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets – and keep them separate from the originals so you have backups and proof of purchase if required.

Activities coverage

We cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences including trekking, rafting or surfing, which are just some of the activities tourists seek out in Bali. But we don’t cover everything. Many activities also have specific terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions you should read up on. An upgrade for certain sports may be required. Check your policy for details.

Natural disasters and other unforeseen events

If your island time is thrown into chaos by a volcanic eruption, or you’re involved in a scooter accident, you can make a claim. If a volcano wreaks havoc with flight schedules, we understand that you may want to cancel your trip rather than vacation in an ash-affected area. If you're already in Bali, we may cover your exit. The use of scooters/mopeds comes with a caveat – you must have the appropriate licenses and add it as an activity when you buy your policy. Terms and conditions apply.

If required, you can get transported to a medical facility suited for your care, subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. Limits apply.

Travel Insurance for Nepal

From high elevation trekking in the Himalayas to wildlife safaris in Chitwan, learn how travel insurance for Nepal could help American travelers.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Nepal? Snow-capped mountains, Buddhist temples, and a welcoming, friendly culture all come to mind for us. Travelers also come to search for tigers and rhinos on safari in one of Nepal’s national parks, join a meditation retreat, relax in Pokhara, stay with a local family in farming villages, experience a religious ceremony or cultural festival, and sample Nepalese dishes like momos and dal bhat. Whatever your dream vacation looks like, Nepal is a place of endless adventure and rich culture

With this much diversity, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Americans in Nepal. We’ve had the best time in Nepal, but international travel can sometimes involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote for travel insurance* for Nepal before you set forth on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Nepal?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like scams or bad weather.

Travel insurance for Nepal can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as an injury sustained while hiking on the multi-day Manaslu Circuit or one of Nepal’s other great treks.

We have four plans to choose from for different types of travelers and adventures. You might notice that our travel insurance plans for Nepal ring in at a higher cost than our insurance plans for other destinations. This is due to the inherent risk of high altitude climbing, which is one of the main reasons our nomads head to Nepal.

Travel insurance for activities in Nepal

Whether you’re planning to hike to Everest Base Camp or go white water rafting on Trishuli River, World Nomads travel insurance covers Americans for over 250 activities in Nepal. Day hikes and multi-day treks in the Himalayassafari excursions in Chitwan, and paragliding in Pokhara are all covered under travel insurance for Nepal too.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. Once you have your vacation in place, read up on different plans to find the one best suited for the activities and adventures you have planned on your trip to Nepal. Not all activities will be covered by your plan. For example, if you’re eager to explore the Himalayas, hiking up to 19,685 feet, which even covers Everest Base Camp at about 17,600 feet-- is covered under all plans.

However, if you’re feeling daring and want to try spelunking, consider upgrading to the Explorer or Epic Plan for increased coverage.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Nepal

In Nepal, the healthcare system may not be what you are familiar with back home. It can be particularly difficult to access reliable health care in rural areas, especially remote regions of the Himalayas. You can protect yourself from emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for Nepal.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.

Travel insurance for Nepal also may cover medical evacuation and repatriation insurance, if it’s required for your medical treatment. In the event that you need an evacuation flight from the mountains due to altitude sickness, you must receive approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Teams first. Without prior approval, you will not be reimbursed for the cost of the flight. The emergency assistance team can also help you determine whether your injury or illness qualifies for a trip down the mountain. Some local companies might scam you into believing your injury is worse than it is to drive up costs.

Travel insurance for scams in Nepal

Nepal is a stunning destination for adventure and cultural experiences, but there are some things to be aware of when visiting. Travelers sometimes can encounter scams that can derail your plans and impact your trip.

One common scam travelers to Nepal have encountered is an evacuation and helicopter scam. Trekking companies may offer a cheap trekking excursion but manipulate you into signing a form agreeing to helicopter evacuation. It’s helpful to do some advance research on potential trekking companies and read reviews to ensure the company you’re trekking with is trustworthy and legitimate. Some evacuation companies unrelated to a trekking company may also try to scam you with unsafe rides down the mountain. It is for this reason that we require you (or your travel buddy) call the 24/7 emergency assistance team if you need to be evacuated.

Another potential scam is with taxis. If you grab a taxi off the street, either insist they use the meter or agree on a price beforehand, to prevent them from driving long routes or pretending that the meter is broken to drive up the costs. You also might encounter people on the street offering to show you around and then demanding money for their tour guides services. Nepal is generally a safe and welcoming country and using common sense can go a long way to help you avoid scams.

Travel insurance for lost bags in Nepal

Whether the airline lost your luggage, or your purse was stolen, lost bags can happen during travel. Did you land in Kathmandu but your bag—packed with your hiking boots and trekking gear—didn’t?

If your bag doesn’t show up at baggage claim at the same time you do, contact the airline first. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact the Delayed or Lost Baggage Tracking and Delivery service, which is our non-insurance service partners. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call so you can file a lost luggage claim.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Nepal

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable expenses up to plan limits.

We never anticipate natural disasters interrupting our trip to Nepal, but they can happen. Earthquakes are a potential risk, which can also trigger avalanches in the mountains. Monsoon season typically hits from July through September in Nepal, and heavy rains have been known to cause extreme floods and landslides. Storms and natural disasters are impossible to predict so the best thing you can do is protect yourself with travel insurance for Nepal.

If you bought your travel insurance plan prior to a natural disaster developing into a major event, your travel insurance for Nepal may provide cancellation protection if you are unable to occupy your destination residence because of a natural disaster.

Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can also help protect you in case of emergencies back home in America. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused (subject to plan limits) hotel expenses or airfare that you can no longer use.

Tips for travelling to Nepal from the US

As much as you may have planned each detail of your Nepalese adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the American government’s safety warnings for Nepal before you leave. Up-to-date warnings-- including weather advisories and political situations-- will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens. Learning a few Nepalese phrases will go a long way too.

Finally, we recommend checking out our travel tips for Nepal, to help prepare you with some basic etiquette to respect local culture. You may also want to read up on some extraordinary experiences for some inspiration and read our packing list tips, to make sure you’re prepared for your trek.

Travel Insurance for Croatia

From swimming in the Adriatic Sea to hiking in Plitvice National Park, learn how travel insurance for Croatia could help American travelers.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Croatia? Sunny islands like Vis and Korcula, beaches on the Dalmatian Coast, the historic walled city of Dubrovnik, and a welcoming culture all come to mind for us. Travelers also come for the lush national parks, unique cuisine, burgeoning wine scene, and under-the-radar experiences in Eastern Croatia’s historic Slavonia and Baranja. Whatever your ideal adventure looks like, Croatia offers adventure, natural beauty, and a rich history and culinary traditions.

You can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Americans in Croatia. International travel can be life changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote for travel insurance* for Croatia before you set out on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Croatia?

International travel can come with many surprises—such as finding a tiny winery outside Dubrovnik that has been in the family for hundreds of years, or taking that perfect photo in Rovinj that will now be framed on your living room wall for years to come.

Some surprises are not as great, though. Nobody wants to think about things like canceled tripsdelayed baggage, and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly. Croatia is in an earthquake-prone area and even the smallest shaking could disrupt flight schedules. Or, what if you trip while walking on the cobblestone streets in Split? In these cases, you may wish that you had travel insurance for Europe.

World Nomads has four plans to select from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.

Travel insurance for activities in Croatia

Whether you’re planning to explore sail between islands in the Adriatic Sea or hike to waterfalls in Krka National Park, World Nomads travel insurance covers Americans for over 250 activities in Croatia. Rock climbing the canyons of Paklenica National Park, sea kayaking from Hvar or Dubrovnik, and windsurfing around Kučište-Viganj are all covered under travel insurance for Croatia.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. Different plans cover different activities. The more adventurous activities could require a higher tier plan, like the Explorer or Epic Plan. For example, all plans cover sea kayaking. However, if you want to cliff diving, you’ll need to invest in the Epic Plan.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Croatia

Whether you break your ankle while hiking through Paklenica National Park or sustain an injury while windsurfing, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Croatia.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Croatia, including assisting you with language barriers and finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost luggage in Croatia

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you arrive in Dubrovink but your bag—packed with your new swimsuit and favorite sundress for your beach vacation—didn’t?

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, the first step is to contact the airline. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact Blue Ribbon Bags, a non-insurance service that will track and expedite the return of your undelivered baggage by the airline. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call Blue Ribbon Bags so you can file a lost luggage claim.

While Croatia is generally considered safe, pickpocketing or theft can happen anywhere. If your stuff is stolen from under your nose, your travel insurance plan could also reimburse you for what was lost (deprecation, exclusions and plan limits will apply). When picking a plan, you may want to consider the amount of baggage coverage available and make sure you are comfortable with the maximum amount. Each plan has different limits.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Croatia

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable expenses.

Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can help protect you in case of emergencies back home in the US. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused travel expenses (like hotels or plane tickets) that you can no longer use. Each plan has a different limit for this, though. You’ll want to be sure you pick a plan that could cover your entire trip expense, should this unexpected and disappointing event happen to you.

If you purchase the Explorer and Epic Plan during the time sensitive period, the plans also may cover various travel inconveniences you may encounter on your Croatian getaway. For example, if you sat on the tarmac for two hours or more on the way to Croatia, you may be eligible for a $250 payment for that inconvenience. Or if your rental car broke down on a road trip through Istria and you arrived more than 12 hours late at your destination, you may also be eligible for coverage.

Travel Insurance for Europe

Learn why Canadians may want to buy travel insurance as they explore Europe

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Home to 44 countries, centuries-old cities, sweeping coasts, highland forests, and delectable cuisine, Europe offers an incredibly varied experience over a relatively compact space.

History buffs come to explore medieval towns, sleep in historic castles, and marvel at renowned works of art. Nature lovers can wander through fields of wildflowers, scale alpine mountains, and soak up the sun along rugged coasts. Festival goers can celebrate King’s Day in Amsterdam, toast with pints at Oktoberfest in Germany, and throw tomatoes at La Tomatina in Spain. Foodies can indulge in cheese in France, find the best pasteis de nata in Portugal, and drink wine among rolling vineyards. It’s easy to see why Europe is so popular among Canadians.

Whether you’re focusing on a single country or are planning to cross borders for a multi-destination excursion—— you may want to consider travel insurance for Europe to help you explore the wonders of this continent with ease.

Do I need travel insurance for Europe?

International travel can come with many surprises—such as finding a tiny winery in Tuscany that has been in the family for hundreds of years, or spotting the northern lights dancing through the night skies in Iceland.

Some surprises are not as great, though. Nobody wants to think about things like cancelled trips, delayed baggage, and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly. If your trek to Mount Etna is blown due to a travel advisory issued by the Canadian Government or your travel plans are disrupted because you fall off your bike and get hurt while cycling through Slovenia, you may then wish that you had travel insurance for Europe.

World Nomads has two plans to select from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.

Travel insurance for activities in Europe

Whether you’re planning to explore Portugal by bike or surf in San Sebastian, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities. Rock climbing in the Dolomites, skiing in Andorra, and sailing around the Greek islands are all covered under travel insurance for Europe too.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. You must list all your activities out when purchasing the plan—and if something happens while you are participating in an activity you didn’t list on your plan, then you won’t be covered. For example, if you go hiking while on your trip and you didn’t list that activity out when making your plan purchase, you won’t be covered if something were to happen on the trail. You may want to overshoot and list out all possible activities you may do, just in case.

Also keep in mind that you will be covered under the base plan to participate in various adventure sports, activities, volunteer, and work experiences, shown as Level 1, under both our Standard and Explorer Plans. For coverage for adventures sports, work and activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3, you will need upgrade your adventure sports coverage to pay an extra premium. Note: Special conditions and exclusions may apply to while taking part in certain sports and activities. For the full policy terms and conditions please review the policy wording.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Europe

As prepared as you may be for your European vacation, sometimes the unexpected happens. You might be trying to catch a big wave in Nazare, Portugal, get swept under the water by a wave, and hit your head on a rock. Or you might twist your ankle while hiking through the storied forests of Bavaria. You might require immediate medical attention as a result.

In either case, emergency medical travel insurance could reimburse you for certain medical expenses. While the health care system in Europe is typically quite good, travel insurance for Europe can help you access and be reimbursed for the care you need. However, there is an important thing to note: you must have GHIP coverage in your home province for your entire trip in order to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical expenses benefits. Without GHIP coverage, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses is limited to CAD$40,000.

With over 200 languages spoken in Europe, you might find yourself in an area where English or French isn’t spoken. The 24/7 emergency assistance team will be able to help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. They can also help communicate with your medical team if there is a language barrier.

If your doctor determines that it’s best for you to go home to Canada to get medical care, if approved by us in advance, the emergency evacuation and repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Europe may cover the costs to get you there.

Travel insurance for lost or stolen bags in Europe

Lost bags are never something we plan for, but unfortunately it happens from time-to-time. You may have packed your favorite swimsuit and sundress for your Italian summer vacation or all your snow gear for a ski trip to the Bavarian Alps. If you land at the airport and then realize that the airline lost your bag, your travel insurance for Europe may reimburse you for the cost to replace your belongings.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, you could still be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until you and your bag are reunited.

Travel insurance for theft in Europe

Europe is pretty safe, although some cities like Paris, Barcelona, and Rome experience petty theft and pickpocketing. Be aware of your belongings in crowded areas, including major tourist spots or while riding the metro—and read up on some tips for avoiding pickpockets.

If anything does happen, make sure you make a police report. You’ll need that if you have to make a claim and get reimbursed for stolen goods with your travel insurance for Europe.

You’ll also need to do your part to keep your belongings safe. If you had one too many drinks during a night out in Prague, you leave your bag at the bar, and your wallet is stolen, World Nomads won’t cover you for your lose.

Travel insurance for cancelled, delayed, or interrupted travel in Europe

You may have planned the perfect European getaway but things can happen that may cause you to cancel or interrupt your trip. Travel insurance for Europe may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses. Remember- travel insurance does not cover everything. The insurance plan will outline the covered risks for trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay for your trip to Europe.

If you get sick before leaving the Canada and your doctor tells you not to travel at that time, you could be forced to cancel your trip. Or, if an immediate family member back home has an unexpected medical emergency while you’re on your adventure, you may need to go back to Canada early. Travel insurance for Europe may provide reimbursement for your prepaid, nonrefundable insured trip costs and may provide additional benefits to help you cover expenses you incur to get back home.

From flooding to forest fires, nature can be unpredictable and it is possible for natural disasters to affect your trip. If, after you have purchased your insurance, a natural disaster causes you to be unable to occupy your Canadian principal residence, you may need to cancel your trip. Volcanoes on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula have been particularly active recently. If, during your trip, an eruption causes flight delays causing you to miss a connection, your trip may be interrupted. Travel insurance does not cover everything, but you may be eligible for reimbursement if you suffer a loss due to one of the covered risks under the insurance policy. Travel insurance for Europe may reimburse you for non-refundable, pre-paid accommodation, and activities.

Tips for travelling to Europe from Canada

Before you leave Canda, we encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s travel advisories for all the countries you’re planning on visiting. Weather, safety, and political situations can change at any time, and this is where they list any current advisories.

If you purchase travel insurance for Europe, it’s a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

You’ll potentially be travelling across several countries using different languages, driving laws, and customs. Brush up on a few phrases and do some research on each destination to know what to expect from place-to-place.

The trains are a wonderful way to slow travel through Europe and watch the scenery pass by. As you’re preparing for your adventure, brush up on our safety tips for Europe and our favorite destinations to explore on this continent.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the plan. It is important you read and understand your plan as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

True Claims Stories

Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

Travel Insurance for Africa

From the savannah to the sea, learn how travel insurance can help Canadians travelling to Africa.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Home to mesmerizing wildlife, extraordinary natural grandeur, tribes rich with tradition, and contemporary urban centres, a trip to Africa is often considered to be a once-in-a-lifetime vacation by many Canadian travellers.

Whether you adventure to ancient ruins in Egypt, search for the Big 5 on safari, trek through leafy jungle abundant with primates, get soaked by the spray at Victoria Falls, or learn to roast coffee in a mountain village in Ethiopia, every traveller will find their own kind of fun on this abundantly diverse continent.

As you prepare for your adventure, we encourage you to consider travel insurance for Africa, as you may experience the unexpected.

Do I need travel insurance for Africa?

International travel can bring all kinds of unexpected surprises - like watching a lion sunbathe while on safari in South Africa’s Kruger National Park or spotting mountain gorillas while climbing a volcano in Rwanda.

Some surprises aren’t so great, though. Nobody wants to think about things like cancelled trips and medical emergencies, but these things can happen. You might come down with malaria symptoms and need to see a doctor. Or perhaps you fell and broke your ankle while climbing through the forest terrain of Odzala National Park in Congo Brazzaville and need to be transported to a hospital. You may wish then you had travel insurance for Africa.

World Nomads has two plans to choose from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.

Travel insurance for activities in Africa

From white water rafting down the Nile River in Uganda to going for a bush walk with San Bushmen in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans, the African continent is filled to the brim with thrilling adventures. World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadians travelling to Africa and includes things like scuba diving in the Quirimbas Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique, undertaking a volunteer project in a local school or wildlife rescue center, and hiking Mount Kenya.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. You must list all your activities out when purchasing the plan— if something happens during an activity you didn’t list on your plan, then you won’t be covered. For example, if you go surfing while on your trip and you didn’t list that activity out when making your plan purchase, you won’t be covered if something were to happen while catching a wave. You may want to consider overshooting and listing out all possible activities you may do, just in case.

Keep in mind that you will be covered under the base plan to participate in various adventure sports, activities, volunteer, and work experiences, shown as Level 1, under both our Standard and Explorer Plans.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Africa

Before you take off on your African adventure, we recommend that you visit a travel medical clinic or your local doctor’s office to make sure you are up to date on all vaccines you may need. You may also want to ask your doctor about malaria medication.

We also recommend packing a few basic supplies for your trip, as some basic things aren’t always available, especially in rural areas on the continent. Strong mosquito repellant to help prevent malaria, sunscreen (it can be hard to find outside of South Africa), and bandages, are a good place to start.

Water and food sanitation vary widely across the continent. Water is safe to drink in Cape Town and the Western Cape, but it generally isn’t safe to drink throughout the rest of the continent. Make sure to drink bottled or filtered water outside of those regions. Malaria is prevalent in many areas, so if you suspect that you have malaria symptoms, contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance for assistance in finding  a local clinic. Malaria is something that most clinics in Africa can test and treat, whereas Canadian clinics may not have that same level of expertise.

Health care varies widely across the African continent and typically will be quite different than what you’re used to in Canada. Emergency medical care and medical facilities with the right equipment are often hard to find. If you have a medical emergency when travelling in Africa, you can call the 24/7 emergency assistance team and they can refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need. They can also help communicate with your local medical team if there is a language barrier.

Maybe you fall and hurt yourself while hiking in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains and your doctor determines that it’s best for you to go home to Canada to get medical care. The emergency evacuation and repatriation coverage that is included in your travel insurance for Africa may cover the costs to get you there.

However, there is an important thing to note: you must have GHIP coverage in your home province for your entire trip to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical expenses benefits. Without GHIP coverage, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses is limited to CAD$40,000.

Travel insurance for lost and stolen luggage in Africa

Nobody plans for lost bags, but it happens. If you’re heading to South Africa for a surfing vacation, you may have packed your favorite surfboard. When you land in Durban and realize that the airline lost your bag, your travel insurance for Africa may reimburse you for the cost to replace your belongings.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, you could still be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until you and your bag are reunited. If you incur expenses because you need rent a surfboard until your favorite one arrives, you may be eligible for reimbursement under the sporting equipment delay coverage included in your insurance plan.

Travel insurance for crime and political unrest in Africa

Safety varies widely across Africa. The best thing you can do is have a sense of awareness around yourself, your surroundings, and your belongings. Leave the flashy jewelry at home to avoid unwanted attention and store your credit cards and valuables in a safe in your accommodations.

Take particular care in crowded areas like markets and bus stations. Keep your bags in front of you and avoid flashing valuables like smart phones if possible. In most major cities, like Nairobi and Kampala, it is also best to avoid walking at night— we encourage you to take motorized transportation instead.

If anything does happen, make sure you make a police report. You’ll need that if you have to make a claim and get reimbursed for stolen goods with your travel insurance for Africa.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips in Africa

When you’re searching for the best travel insurance for Africa, make sure it has coverage for trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption. If it does, you could be reimbursed for unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if something unexpected happens.

If you get sick before leaving Canada and your doctor tells you not to travel at that time, you could be forced to cancel your trip. Or, if an immediate family member back home has an unexpected medical emergency while you’re on your adventure, you may need to go back to Canada early. Travel insurance for Africa may provide reimbursement for your prepaid, nonrefundable insured trip costs and may provide additional benefits to help you cover expenses you incur to get back home.

Sometimes situations happen that disrupt your plans once you’re already in Africa. Certain countries in Africa experience frequent political unrest. If possible, avoid travelling during elections, when tensions may be high, and protests and unrest can break out.

Tips for travelling to Africa from Canada

Before you leave Canada, we encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s travel advisories for each country you plan to visit. Weather, safety, and political situations can change at any time, and this is where they list any current advisories.

If you purchase travel insurance for Africa, it’s a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

With 54 nations and over 2,000 languages, cultural customs, transport, and everything in between in Africa are pretty different country-to-country. We recommend that you read up on each place you intend to visit ahead of time Also, keep in mind that most African countries are more culturally conservative than Canada. Modest dress is recommended in rural areas—a great rule of thumb is to cover your knees and shoulders out of respect for local culture.
Whether you’re heading to Ethiopia, Morocco, South Africa, or Tanzania, do some pre-trip reading for destination inspiration—you’ll be wowed by how much there is to do beyond a safari vacation. And speaking of safaris, we encourage you to look for ethical wildlife and cultural experiences so your experience doesn’t harm the environment or people involved.

Check out our tips for photographing wildlife and keep those camera batteries charged to make sure you’re ready for those gorilla, lion, and other wildlife shots!

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the plan. It is important you read and understand your plan as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

Tapas, wine, sunshine and fiestas. Olé!

What's covered

Our policies can offer cover (up to policy limits) for benefits including:

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs.

Why should I consider travel insurance for Spain?

Travel insurance could help if you land in Barcelona but your baggage doesn’t, you suffer a travel delay, or you need to be medically evacuated.

Backpacking in Spain

With plenty of affordable accommodation, delicious food and a never-ending list of famous sights, Spain is a backpacker's dream! Our policies may cover you if your wallet is stolen whilst browsing the El Rastro markets, for travel delays or if your trip is cancelled.

Adventuring in Spain

Our policies can cover injuries and accidents for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences - whether you’re cycling the Basque country, kayaking in Costa Brava or hiking in the Pyrenees. Just be sure to specify the activities you intend to do when you purchase your policy, as you can’t add them afterwards.

Medical Mishaps

Our policies can cover you if you get sick from a dodgy prawn in your paella, or are in a serious accident that requires emergency treatment, evacuation. We can even bring you home for treatment. We can cover hospitalisation, evacuation, treatments and more.

What should I look out for when travelling around Spain

As fun and fascinating as Spain can be, there are some things you should be aware of:

Crime in Spain’s hotspots

Wandering the streets of Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville can be a wonderful experience, but remember to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight. Watch out for bag snatching, pickpockets, and theft from cars. If you’re taking tech gear and other high value items our policies can cover you with an upgrade.

Natural disasters in Spain

Spain experiences earthquakes, severe storms, and wildfires. Our policies offer cover for natural disasters. To be covered you’ll need to purchase your policy before the natural disaster event is known.

Have fun at festivals but don’t overdo it

Spain has some of the best party spots in the world – Ibiza anyone? When going to party hotspots and festivals be aware of your surroundings, especially if you’re travelling solo and don’t know the language. Don’t overdo it when it comes to drinking and be careful of accepting drinks from strangers.

Remember that benefits limits apply, and benefits may differ depending on the plan you purchase. If you’re unsure of anything, contact us.

What's not covered

While there are several things we offer coverage for, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the New Zealand Government (see www.safetravel.govt.nz)
  • Any activities or sports that aren’t covered by our policies or where you don’t purchase the appropriate level upgrade
  • The Running of the Bulls
  • Unsupervised baggage or personal items
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs or acting illegally.

Travel insurance and safety tips when visiting Spain

  • Running with the bulls in Pamplona? It’s a no from us - our policies do not cover this activity.
  • Keep your personal items close: petty crime is a problem in big cities like Barcelona. Take care at busy tourist spots, beaches and on public transport.
  • Be mindful of tourist scams: common scams include the flower scam and pigeon poo scam.
  • Keep copies of all receipts, tickets, paperwork: you’ll need to provide these in the event of a claim.
  • Prepare for the outdoors: make sure you have adequate gear including sunscreen and water. Spain has a warm climate – you don’t want to ruin your holiday with severe sunburn or heatstroke!
