What to know when planning your British getaway.
As featured in:
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are waiting to be explored. Whether you’re off to hike the Scottish Highlands or kayak in the Lake District, or discover the art, nightlife and culture of London, Glasgow and Bristol, we hope that your trip is drama free.
However, if you want to protect yourself and loved ones you may want to consider travel insurance, especially if you run into trouble or are sick or injured when it can save you a lot of money and headaches.
With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or while you're traveling (waiting periods apply); it’s entirely up to you.
World Nomads has two plans – Standard and Explorer - which cover an array of activities including mountain biking, skiing, hiking, kayaking, surfing, and scuba diving. We also offer cover for other key events including:
When planning a trip to the UK the most common issues international travelers face are lost or delayed luggage, or unexpected medical issues. And now you can add Coronavirus to the list of common issues that travelers are dealing with.
It can throw a massive spanner in the works to arrive at Heathrow and find yourself alone at the baggage carousel, watching it go around waiting for your bags to appear. You could also get your gear stolen on public transport or from your accommodation, which is why baggage insurance is a good idea.
Note: All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.
World Nomads may offer cover (up to the policy limits) for loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items depending on your specific situation, see below:
You may also need to take depreciation into account and some policies, depending on your country of residence and the plan you purchase, may also have an excess applicable to any claim made. Details on how depreciation works can be found in your policy.
Travel insurance tip 1: never leave your bags and valuables out of your sight and reach. Try and carry your portable electronic devices (tablets, laptops, photographic and video equipment, mobile phones and other hand-held devices), jewelry, specified high value items, travel documents, cash and credit cards with you at all times. If you can’t, then leave them in a secure place such as a locked safe. Remember that if you buy anything, before or during your trip, to keep all receipts.
When traveling to the UK, medical insurance is a good idea in case of an accident or sudden illness. You don’t want to be left out of pocket if you have to visit a local doctor, go to hospital, need an urgent trip to the dentist, or even worse, have to be repatriated back to your country of residence.
With Coronavirus causing travel disruptions globally it’s also important that you follow any government guidelines while in the UK. It’s always a good idea to wear a face mask when visiting any of the UK’s popular hotspots, even in open-air places such as Stonehenge, London’s parks and palace grounds, or when strolling through the bustling streets of Edinburgh.
The level of cover you’ll have for any Coronavirus-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. Check out our Travel Insurance cover for Coronavirus article which goes into more detail on all the benefits, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.
Travel insurance tip 2: many countries now require proof of vaccination before you can enter and some have introduced visas and travel insurance minimum requirements. Do your research before you go as travel insurance does not cover expenses you incur because you don’t have the correct visas to enter your intended destination(s). Make sure you have the required proof of any vaccinations so you can easily produce them while traveling overseas.
Dealing with a medical emergency can be frightening and confusing, but you don’t have to go through this experience on your own. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can direct you to nearby appropriate care, talk to doctors, help out with admin and arrange for payment of expenses if necessary. If your situation is life-threatening, seek medical help immediately and let us know when you can so we can help with medical assistance and keeping your friends and family informed.
Travel insurance tip 3: in some parts of the UK (including Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) signage, including road signs, are written in the local Gaelic, Welsh or Irish language. However, English is still widely spoken and it is relatively easy to find medical assistance.
If you’re looking to get your adrenaline levels up and you go hiking in Snowdonia, or camp and mountain bike in the Scottish Highlands, World Nomads offers travel insurance cover for 150+ activities and sports. Please check your Policy Wording when choosing any activities or sports as you may need to upgrade the policy and sporting level to ensure you’re covered for everything you plan to do.

Kiwi nomads planning to visit the UK will be in for unlimited adventure and tradition with four diverse countries to explore its history, culture and plethora of beautiful landscapes. From the iconic White cliffs of Dover to enchanting Edinburgh, and cosmopolitan London, whatever your plans, we hope your trip is drama free.
However, if you need to protect yourself and loved ones while abroad, you can purchase travel insurance, in case you run into trouble or are sick or injured.
With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip to the UK is locked in or while you're travelling (waiting periods apply); it’s entirely up to you.
If you head south for the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival in Cornwall, which celebrates all things nautical, travel insurance may provide coverage if you are struck down with food poisoning or suffer a boating related injury that lands you in hospital.
World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:
A Scottish summer is full of surprises, sea kayaking the sheltered sea lochs of the Western Highlands or even snorkelling the Outer Hebrides Island chain (yes - you’ll need a thick wetsuit!). But if your gear is delayed, damaged or stolen on public transport before you even arrive, our baggage cover can help.
No one likes being left out of pocket from unexpected medical costs while travelling. If your hike along the beautiful Seven Sisters coastal walk leaves you hobbling in pain and you need to find a doctor or a hospital, our plans have got your back to recover medically necessary expenses such as hospital stays, prescriptions, outpatient treatment and emergency dental treatment.
If you’re injured or get sick during your trip, World Nomads Travel Insurance may cover your medical treatment, hospitalization and emergency transport including medically necessary repatriation back to New Zealand.
However, you must notify our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible. They will confirm if the treatment is medically necessary and advise you on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities, and monitor your medical treatments if needed to make sure you are given proper care.
Our travel insurance plans include emergency medical and repatriation cover if you get sick with Coronavirus while travelling, but terms, conditions, limits, exclusions apply and vary between plans. It’s always a good idea to wear a face mask when visiting any of the UK’s popular hotspots but if you do get sick, contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team so they can help direct you to local medical facilities if needed and help you understand your options.
For all the details including benefit limits and exclusions under our Coronavirus cover, check out our Coronavirus cover article.
It’s good to know with World Nomads travel insurance, you can call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team if you suddenly find yourself in a crisis overseas. The EA 24/7 team can help get you to the nearest medical facility, provide help navigating language barriers, or assist with evacuation for medical reasons.
For injuries where treatment costs are not expected to exceed NZD$2000, you can submit your receipts for reimbursement. If you are hospitalised or if your treatment expenses as an outpatient are likely to go above NZD$2,000, you must call our Emergency Assistance Team who will work with us to confirm cover and they will liaise with the hospital on your behalf to arrange payments.
Traveller tip 1: don't forget when travelling overseas, some countries may require your New Zealand passport to be valid for at least six months before it's expiry date as a condition of entry.
Whether it’s caving in the limestone dales of Yorkshire or a canoe trip down the Thames, the UK is a haven for adventure lovers. Whatever the activity, both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for level 1 sport and adventure activities that include hiking up to 2,000 metres, and activities such as kayaking, horse riding and cycling.
For more adventurous pursuits, you may need to upgrade your cover if you’re hiking up to 6,000 metres, for example if you’re going mountain biking or skiing in Scotland. Simply specify all the activities you have planned for your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your Policy Document for details or contact us.
If you manage to get some sweet sunshine, the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales has some of the UK’s best beaches as well as being much quieter than the English coast. If you hire a car for a self-driven holiday, the Explorer Plan has cover for the rental vehicle insurance excess if you’re involved in an accident. Check out the article on how travel insurance can help you when on a road trip.
Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything. Some things we don’t cover include:
Traveller tip 2: the number 9, 11 and 24 bus routes in London will take you past some of the best sights the city has to offer for just a few pounds – don’t forget to buy an Oyster card to tap on and off - buses don’t take cash.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Traveling as a family can be an incredibly rewarding experience; creating memories, seeing amazing sights and sharing adventures together is exciting. It can also be very different to traveling solo or traveling when you were younger, and World Nomads Travel Insurance can help if things don’t go to plan.
With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance for you and the whole family as soon as your trip is locked in and you're ready to go, or while you're on the road traveling.
Depending on your Country of Residence and the policy you choose, you and your family may be covered for:
Travel insurance tip: to avoid any surprises when making a claim, it’s a smart idea to become familiar with the various limits, benefits, available upgrades, terms and conditions before you buy a policy.
Keeping track of bags, belongings and children can be a challenge, especially when you’re rushing to catch a connecting flight or out seeing the sights. It may be worth considering the following before traveling:
With World Nomads travel insurance cover, a dependent is:
Note: age limits for dependents as outlined above will vary depending on your country of residence.
When applying for a policy there must be at least one adult insured on the policy, and at least one of the insured adults on the policy must be the legal guardian of the dependent(s). World Nomads can cover up to 8 dependents per policy.
If a dependent is not traveling with their legal guardian they may need their own policy, depending on your country of residence. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and level of cover for everyone who is traveling with you. Your policy may have conditions and exclusions.
Want to take the family skiing in Japan? Going on a family hiking trip in the Canadian Rockies? Taking surfing lessons with the kids in Hawaii?
Depending on your country of residence, the plan you choose and the activity cover selected, you and your family can be covered for more than 150 activities, sports and adventures. To have cover for a broader range of adventure activities and sports you may need to upgrade your plan or select a plan with more benefits/coverage when you buy and pay the extra premium. Remember, you can’t upgrade your coverage after you buy, so it’s important to get this right on the first go.
Travel insurance tip 2: many policies cover white water rafting and kayaking, for example, but Class 6, Extreme and Exploratory Rapids, aren’t covered. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. Your policy may have conditions and exclusions.
If a member of your family becomes sick or injured, with anything from food poisoning to a serious injury, our policies can cover the costs of medical treatment including hospitalisation, prescribed medicines and evacuation.
If a member of your family is diagnosed with Covid-19 you may be covered for medical expenses and hospital assistance, as well as repatriation. Depending on your country of residence and the plan selected, you may also be able to get extra cover for Coronavirus-related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses and some personal quarantine costs.
We also offer cover if you or a family member is traveling while pregnant. Whilst we don’t cover the normal costs associated with pregnancy, we may provide cover for pregnancy complications that may arise during your trip. Depending on your country of residence, cover may also apply for pre-trip cancellation due to complications of pregnancy.
Our multi-lingual team helps take the stress out of already stressful situations and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We can offer assistance such as arranging medical transport, provide help when navigating language barriers, provide assistance following a robbery or assault, and giving support to you and your family.
Our policies provide benefits if you need to cancel or rearrange your trip in the event that a member of your family becomes sick or injured, and they can’t travel or need to return home early. Depending on your country of residence and the plan selected we may also cover you if a natural disaster affects your trip.
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

For a country that straddles Europe and the Middle East, Turkey brims with tourist appeal. Whether you’re drawn to the mosques and historic sites in Istanbul, wish to pay your respects at Gallipoli, take a hot-air balloon ride over Cappadocia, or hiking through the Valley of Love is more your speed, World Nomads can assist with travel insurance plans while you are abroad.
Along with all your valuables, you should consider packing World Nomads Travel Insurance as soon as your trip is confirmed, if it’s an afterthought, that’s OK too, you can buy your policy while on the road.
Our team recognises that the coverage each traveller needs depends on their individual circumstances. That’s why we offer two different policies – Standard and Explorer – each with different coverage depending on what you’ll be doing on your travels through Turkey.
For example, if you’re planning on renting a vehicle and driving around Turkey, the Explorer option may suit you, as it includes a rental car excess and may cover the cost of a replacement key should one be required. This cover also includes benefits associated with hijacking, higher baggage reimbursement limits, and some coronavirus-related coverage.
If you’re heading to Bodrum for a relaxed seaside holiday, Standard cover may be sufficient. World Nomads offers coverage (up to the policy limits) for:
And many more cover options and extras…
Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs as our travel insurance plans are different and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, the plan you choose, and any optional extras or upgrades you buy. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, even while traveling.

Turkey is peppered with incredible experiences, but any time within this nation comes with a few risks. Pickpockets are a concern (muggings too), especially in Istanbul; terrorists have targeted the country before and may do again; and if you’re looking to hire a car, be aware that Turkish drivers are renowned for often ignoring the road rules.
None of us has a crystal ball that can tell us whether our bags will go missing enroute, or if an injury or illness is on the horizon, or that due to weather conditions your pre-booked hot-air balloon ride or your ferry ride from Turkey to Greece will be cancelled. Depending on the policy you choose, our policies may cover you (up to the policy limits) for the following:

Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

If you’re visiting Turkey be ready to take in the best of both worlds where East meets West. Straddling the border between Asia and Europe, Turkey offers everything from museums and archaeological sites to pristine beaches along the Turquoise coast and the always busy Grand Bazaar in Istanbul’s Old City with over 4000 shops.
With World Nomads, you can consider buying travel insurance when you book your trip from home or while you're already traveling around Turkey.
World Nomads offers cover for many activities ranging from hiking Turkey’s Lycian Way, hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, or surfing, whitewater rafting, and scuba diving in Antalya. Our plans can offer cover for:
Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. World Nomads has two levels of cover - the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan - that offer different benefits, limits and sub-limits so it’s best to compare them to see which one suits your travel needs. You can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, even while traveling.
When visiting Turkey there are many spots to visit, whether you’re visiting in the summer or winter months. If you want to avoid big crowds, your best bet is to avoid the major tourist hotspots especially in the Summer months as they can get very crowded with locals and foreigners. The capital Istanbul is incredible but can be also quite daunting as it has 15 million people alone. If Istanbul is a must-see on your travel itinerary, then it’s advisable that you plan ahead, leave enough time and have a handy map when exploring the big city.
There are several attractions that will suit the more adventurous traveller looking for a unique outdoor experience. For example, you may want to visit the ruins of Mount Nemrut at dawn to witness a breathtaking sunrise. For those wanting to go skiing there are a number of ski resorts in Istanbul and Ankara (Turkey’s winter season is November through March).
With World Nomads Travel Insurance there are many outdoor activities, sports, and experiences that are automatically covered and available under both plans. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can upgrade the level of activity cover, which offers cover for a broader range of activities and sports. Whether hiking through ancient ruins, kayaking the Aegean coastline, or rock climbing at Ala Daglar National Park, always make sure you check the plan details before you buy to make sure you’ve got the right level of activity cover.
You should plan ahead for any sports and adventure activities you'll be doing and compare our two insurance plans before purchasing. Remember, you can’t upgrade your activities coverage to the Explorer plan after you buy, so it’s important to get this right on the first go.
World Nomads travelers have access to 24/7 Emergency Assistance. If something goes wrong and you need help, contact our team. They can help get you find local medical facilities if needed, provide local consular details and information and in the worst-case scenario, help get you home if you’re seriously injured or ill and need to be repatriated. When you call (free from anywhere in the world), make sure you have your policy number and a contact number for where you are so we can help.
When traveling to Turkey, travel insurance may help if you become unwell or have an accident, especially in these uncertain times of traveling and dealing with Coronavirus (COVID-19). You don’t want to be left out of pocket if you have to visit a local doctor, go to hospital, need an urgent trip to the dentist, or even worse, have to be repatriated back to your country of residence.
With Coronavirus causing travel disruptions globally, it’s also important that you follow any government and World Health Organisation guidelines while in Turkey. It’s always a good idea to wear a face mask when visiting any of Turkey’s popular hotspots.
The level of cover you’ll have for any Coronavirus-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your country of residence and the plan you’ve chosen. Check out our Travel Insurance cover for Coronavirus article which goes into more detail on all the benefits, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.

The world of travel has changed, there is no doubt about that. Travelers are still interested in discovering new places. The appeal of busy hotels and big crowds has made way for vacations that involve immersion and intimacy.
Never before have we yearned for space and privacy on our own terms as we do now, which is why vacation rentals are coming into their own. But it’s unknown territory for many, that’s why you should consider World Nomads Travel Insurance, it can help you when the unexpected happens and let you focus on the good stuff.
World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each providing different levels of coverage depending on your Country of Residence and what level of cover you need. You can purchase your policy as soon as you know where you’re going and what the plans are, or if it’s all too hectic before you leave home, you can do it in transit. Our policies, include coverage for:
While we don’t like to think about it, things can and do go wrong when we’re far from home, even for the most seasoned of travelers.
As with most vacation rentals, the primary renter will be expected to put down a deposit to secure the lease, travel insurance can help you keep that payment secure, and possibly recoup a refund should you be forced to cancel at the last-minute as a result of illness, or due to a natural disaster in the area.
Same goes if you are booked into a beachside rental that costs you a fortune and a day or two into a week-long stay you get a call from home to say your mother has taken ill and you need to return to your country of residence immediately.
Travel insurance tip: vacation rentals have various house rules about occupancy, minimum age requirements for the primary renter and so on. Do ensure you understand what you're agreeing to before booking to avoid potentially incurring any extra fees or losing your deposit.
Of the two plans we offer, while there are plenty of similarities, the Explorer option provides additional cover for things like Rental Vehicle Excess, Covid-related events, personal accident and missed connection.
It’s up to you to choose the policy that best suits your needs, but it is worth noting once you have booked a Standard policy you can’t upgrade it.
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything – so make sure you know what you’re covered for. Some, but not all, of the events we don’t cover include:
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. Often knackered after a long day of sightseeing and can’t think of anything better than ditching the jandals and settling in for a sunset drink on your private terrace? If this sounds like you, a private holiday crib is likely more your speed than a crowded hotel.
Whether renting out a cabin in the woods or a beach house there’s always the chance that the unexpected could happen and that’s where World Nomads Travel Insurance comes in.
Hopefully, the worst thing that happens when you’re staying at your cosy chalet in France is eating the free cheese and enjoying the wine too fast. But, if you find yourself in a pinch, travel coverage can save your sanity. When an emergency happens, it is as much a headache preventer as any dose of medicine. Think of good travel protection as having back-up on standby.
Booking hotels often seems so easy, but that’s just because it’s what we’re familiar with. As world travellers ourselves the team at World Nomads understands that steering toward a private rental may be a little nerve-wracking.
Following are just some of the things covered by World Nomads travel insurance. World Nomads offers coverage (up to the policy limits) for:
Travel insurance tip: holiday homes have various house rules about occupancy, minimum age requirements for the primary renter and so on. Do ensure you understand what you're agreeing to before booking to avoid potentially incurring any extra fees or losing your deposit.
Private holiday rentals differ greatly, not just when it comes to facilities and location, but also who you’re dealing with, what’s included and of course, what it will set you back financially.
World Nomads offers two plans – a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan – each with different benefits, limits, and sub-limits of coverage.
Which policy you choose is up to you, but aside from any issues with your accommodation, the explorer plan can help if you’re planning on renting a vehicle or hiring sporting equipment; want to be covered for issues related to Coronavirus; and want reassurance that if you wind up in hospital you won’t be facing exorbitant out-of-pocket expenses.
Travel insurance tip: make sure you do your research on the countries you’re looking to visit to ensure that there are no government warnings or restrictions. Your policy will be jeopardised if something goes wrong and you fail to adhere to the warnings. Find out more at Safe Travel NZ and keep updated on the World Health Organisation information regarding COVID-19.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Most Aussies enjoy the creature comforts they’re afforded Down Under, so when it comes to travelling overseas many of us choose to bunk down in a holiday home rather than a run-of-the-mill hotel or resort. But sometimes booking from a private homeowner could add a layer of “What if?”. That’s where World Nomads Travel Insurance comes in.
Whether you’re renting a cabin in the woods in Alaska or have secured that fancy unit in London for a week, we can offer you travel insurance that can assist you and your loved ones when you need it the most.
When travelling overseas, it is understandable that you may feel a little uncertain about what to expect when booking a private rental over a hotel or a resort, especially as it is sight unseen.
At World Nomads we know how you feel, that’s why we aim to support you in your travels. Below are just some of the reasons why you should consider travel insurance when you’re planning a trip that will include a private vacation rental, no matter the destination.
It is important to consider travel insurance regardless of the sort of trip and the length of trip you're taking. World Nomads offers two plans – a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan – each with different benefits, limits and sub-limits of coverage.
Which one you choose is up to you and your specific needs, but if you are planning on renting a vehicle or hiring sporting equipment; want cover for issues related to Coronavirus; and want reassurance that if you wind up in hospital you won’t be facing exorbitant out-of-pocket expenses, the Explorer plan is worth checking out.
Travel insurance tip: Make sure you do your research on the countries you’re looking to visit to ensure that there are no government warnings or restrictions. Your policy will be jeopardised if something goes wrong and you fail to adhere to the warnings. Find out more at Smartraveller and keep updated on the World Health Organization information regarding COVID-19.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

“A motorcycle came from behind me and stopped next to me, so I stopped walking. Two people wearing helmets were on the motorcycle. The driver was gesturing although I didn't know why, I didn't hear him/her say anything. I felt a slight pull on my bag and on my backpack strap, and then the motorcycle rode away out of sight. The motorcycle passenger had taken my bag. The strap of the bag must have been cut. I couldn't see a license plate. I continued to my hotel and reported the theft to the police the next day.”
